Tunnel Screens Purpose: • Stress the defense horizontally and make them defend the width of the field. • Create matchups with our BIG people on their SMALL people. Make DB’s fit similar to LB’s in the run game. • Force the defense to have great eye discipline and tackle in space. • Force fatigue on the defense by making them RUN & CHASE. • Gives our offense opportunity for BIG PLAYS!
Personnel Requirements 1. OL MUST be able to bend and run! 2. WR’s MUST be willing to block for each other and courageous enough to catch the ball in traffic. 3. QB MUST be willing to get hit in order to make perfect fakes and throws.
WR Coaching Points • WR Rules - WR #1 footwork can be adjusted to fit timing. (Know your personnel) 3 hard quick steps, retrace and receive the ball. “IN then OUT” - WR #2 Responsible for blocking DB/OLB overtop the WR getting ball.
OL Coaching Points • OL Rules – “Thousand One, Thousand Two” then release to landmark. – PST = Responsible for MDM #1 @ Point of Attack. – PSG = Responsible for MDM #2 @ Point of Attack. – C = Responsible for MDLB to the call side.
QB Coaching Points • QB Rules – QB accuracy and velocity are crucial. Stress PERFECT FEET & execute in Rhythm. (REPS is the Secret) – Every screen has a backfield action. After that is completed QB must reset feet, deliver football leading the WR to his landmark.
High-Low Reads Purpose: • Creates horizontal stretch on the defense opening up throwing lanes for the QB. • Puts Flat Defender in a bind trying to defend Curl/Hook Zone and the Flat Zone. • Easy read for the QB. “If this, then that” mentality.
WR Coaching Points • #1 WR Rules - Must threaten the CB DEEP! Eyes downfield, arms pumping creating the illusion your running by him. - Do not turn head or stop pumping arms until break is made. (Hint CB “I’m stopping”) - Must work back to the QB two steps after the break is made. Protecting the throw, keeping yourself between the ball and the defender. - Must create inside leverage on the CB by attacking his inside #.
WR Coaching Points • #2 WR Rules - Must get to his landmark with excellent speed, choking the route at the top of the numbers allowing room for run after catch. - 4 step speed roll toward the sideline. (Inside foot up in stance)
QB Coaching Points • Footwork – 3 Step & Hitch (Gun) 5 Step & Hitch (Under Center)
• Read body language and movement of FD • If FD grabs WIDTH, throw Curl route off the FD inside ear. • If FD grabs DEPTH, throw Flat route giving opportunity for run after catch. • QB must throw on time to the field or have a HUGE ARM!
