DAVID BRASK A/W 2014

This month we fell in love with swedish designer David Brask’s A/W 2014 collection. Fresh out of Beckman’s College of Design in Stockholm, this new collection goes all in and reminds us of the early work of designers Rick Owens and Rei Kawakubo and the golden sculptures of Richard Serra. This season the collection weaves the ma jestic stories of ‘Colossus’ – an interesting sculptural concept that simulates the human experience itself in a deeper poetic level. This can be seen through the use of weaving fabrics as heavy ropes and the dark, and dramatic colour palette! Check out more of the collection at https://www.notjustalabel.com/ designer/david-brask

INTRODUCING

sXylk WORDS | LE’KEISHA SIMS

Meet XO Magazine's new resident DJ and producer SXYLK! As the newest member of our team he will be producing exclusive mixes over on XO Digital! We sit down with him to find out how he got started, his style and who are his ones to watch! HOW DID YOU GET INTO DJ'ING / PRODUCING? I started dj'ing as a break from production. I really love producing but I was having a bit of trouble moving into a new sound after working on Dandy Warhol's "EI8HT" tape and I thought I'd have a better chance of communicating what I wanted to say, musically, with other people's work + my curation skill. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? I would describe my style as cinematic, melancholic, and sexually explicit. WHO IS TWINKMOB AND HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? TWINKMOB is our music group comprised of Kill Will, SXYLK, Dandy, our friend Ta j, and our other friend Sam. Like... it's my response to Dandy's 'LOLITOGANG' (which is comprised of the same people) but I'm a petty bitch so I had to make my own group *insert nail emoji here*. TWINKMOB and LOLITOGANG is more of a conceptual art piece that we group all our music under, together, than something we'd tour under- we'll probably come out with a new name for when that time comes, who knows! TOP FIVE SONGS FOR AUTUMN 2014 THAT YOU HAVE ON REPEAT? OKAY HERE WE GO 1. Dandy Warhol- Akihai: I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE listening to this on my walk to physics class (yasss your gyal Sxylk is an academic as well) It makes me feel like I'm walking towards like... my destiny. 2. FKA Twigs- Ultraviolet: This song makes me feel like I have a man. 3. Toni Braxton- Take This Ring Off: This song makes me feel like I don't need a man AND it's from the very rare Toni

Braxton 'Libra' album that really should get more play than it does. #Justice4Libra 4. S?K- RAIN/MILEENA- Special K made this entire mortal kombat inspired mixtape and it's so fucking lovely and violent and kind of erotic so I'm very here for it. The breakdown where all you hear is Mileena screaming combined with the drums is literally Grammy worthy. 5. [bsd.u]- cigarettes&rain [lo-fi mix]- This is a really emotional mixtape of new jazz type beats; a very Nujabes x Onra x Nomak sound. My favorite thing about this tape is that it's the artist's own music being woven together with cowboy Beebop scenes woven in that you really have to listen to carefully. He's also added an extra layer of static and rain noise over his instrumentals, giving a really nice rainy day atmospheric vibe; very toonami-after-soccer-practicegets-rained-out. Beautiful. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR ONES TO WATCH AS FAR AS NEW MUSIC, OR PEOPLE ON THE COME UP GO? I think that GRRL is definitely someone to be on the lookout for. Idk if she's a real girl or like, not, but she makes amazing remixes and her chiptune/bitnoise/kawaii sensibilities really please me. She's also the only person that can keep up with me in JPEG wars on twitter so I have mad respect for her. BBY MUTHA (formerly Trap Mermaid) is also on the rise and I'm so grateful for that because she has such a lovely delivery and a devil-maycare approach to her rhyme-scheme that really makes her work a treat to listen to. I also like this group called Kill J, they're norwegian (I believe) and have really otherworldly sound that's SO pleasant but also a bit dark and creepy and like "what's really going on here???!!?!?!?!?!". Otherwise I'm totally here for the soundcloud girlseveryone is coming up! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS YOU HAVE COMING UP? I'm working on PRIVATE PARTY III right now, I'm hoping to have it out in time for art basel- There are also a lot of unreleased TWINKHORE mixes that I'll be uploading to mixcloud.com/SXYLK in the future! Keep up with SXYLK over on Twitter at @ SXYLK_ and be on the lookout for his first official XO Mix dropping this November!

Queens D Light WORDS | LE'KEISHA SIMS PHOTOGRAPHY | AMY HARRITY STYLING | LISBETH CERVANTES

Meet Queens D. Light, a california wildflower rapper, activist and director from Oakland who is making her splash on the scene with her own take on hip hop featuring trippy, cosmic and total jamming tunes. I chat with her on her inspiration for her new album, goddess vibes and what’s next.

THIS SUMMER YOU RELEASED CALIFORNIA WILDFLOWER. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS RELEASE AND HOW DID THE NAME COME ABOUT? Well, I was traveling for a bit and finally settled back in my home state, California. For an entire year I was battling with relationship struggles, confidence in myself as a creative, and just really finding my voice. There'd be times when I sat back and watched my Sistren and Brethren going through similar struggles as young people. I also realized how difficult at times it was such a task to recognize our beauty and strength. I mean in our 20's we are the most beautiful and possibly the strongest we will ever be, but also the most insecure. Such a paradox. Sometimes we will over look ourselves allowing others to do the same. Just like the wild lavender that grows in West Oakland; its so widespread, that folks just walk pass ignoring the numerous healing properties of the wild flower. I started to draw a lot of comparisons between young folks overlooking their essential greatness and how we Californians overlook the abundance of natural beauty surrounding us. Thats really what inspired the name as well as the project. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS! HOW DID THIS ALBUM TAKE SHAPE? Basically, it started as a journaling process of a love that never manifested. In depths of my sadness I began to hype myself up with affirmations reclaiming my rightful place on this earth. I thought it was important to exercise my voice about my experimentation with lovers, 'shrooms, and my overall journey to new understandings. I kinda just say what I feel on tracks, and it always falls into one of those categories. The theme really took form itself. I just try to remain true to my instincts.

THIS ALBUM RELIES HEAVILY ON STORY-TELLING. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT CREATING THIS MYSTICAL WORLD THAT THE RECORD FORMS AND TIE IT IN WITH URBAN CULTURE? Telling stories has always been a family tradition. My mom and aunts would recap the funniest things from their day or lives. I remember watching and imitating them when I would tell stories to my younger sister or cousins. It felt really natural to string through the cinematic element, especially since I'm studying film right now. I'm from and live in an urban culture, so I was really just keeping things as organic as possible in terms of structure. The world created itself, my voice was just the medium that spoke it aloud. THE FLOWERS AND TREES TALKING TO EACH OTHER IN THE INTRO IS GENIUS! YOU’RE REALLY INTO SPIRITUALITY. CAN YOU TELL ME HOW YOU CAME TO SORT OF DISCOVER YOUR PATH? Hahaha. Thanks. Well, I was living really hard when I was 19 and 20. In the streets kinda wild'n' out. My Granny suggested I go to Community College, and it was there that I met my God Mother Gerri Scott. She is a priestess that practices the Yoruba spiritual path as well as a professor. I took her college success course after nearly flunking my first semester and remember gravitating towards her very compassionate vibe. She took me under her wing after I did a poem for a project in her class. I think she seen some potential in me. Later in my time at city college she welcomed me into her home and introduced me to African Spirituality. The cosmology teaches that all humans possess a particular destiny, or path and are expected to eventually become one in spirit with the source of all energy on this earth. That made a lot of sense to me. Also the Orisas who guide your path are personified as natural elements.

So when we seek evolved spiritual consciousness, we are also bringing ourselves closer to the spirit of the earth. That makes a lot of sense to me you know? IT’S FUNNY BECAUSE BEFORE I SAW AND HEARD “LOVE PISTOL” I GOT A OSHUN VIBE FROM YOU STRAIGHT AWAY! CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT OSHUN AND HOW SHE RELATES TO YOU OR HOW YOU CAME TO FIND HER AS A INSPIRATION. Well she guides my path. I can remember finding out about her in a reading I had. It was amazing how my personality traits were very aligned with the description of her "children". Oshun is a river goddess that is associated with love, maternity, marriage, peacock feathers, mirrors, honey and anything beautiful. As a Piscean woman I find myself in very passionate relationships and constantly gravitating towards beautiful things... And water. " no one is an enemy to water" you dig? Oshun has to be respect and revere by all as mama wata. I feel her though cause I love passionately with a goal of deep mutual respect. We all yearn for this I think, but some don't feel like they have space to do so. To me, this idea of finding harmony in loving gives me hella inspiration. OUTSIDE OF MUSIC YOU ALSO DIRECT AND STUDIED FILM IN SCHOOL, DO YOU PLAN ON WORKING ON ANYMORE DIRECTING PROJECTS IN THE FUTURE? Yup. I have some plans for a film that's music driven. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU FOR THE REST OF 2014? I'm really just in the studio and building with my family at Malidoma Co. and Them Hellas. I mostly wanna chill and enjoy family.

WORDS & CREATIVE DIRECTION | MOEIMA DUKULY PHOTOGRAPHY | KISHA BARI STYLING| HEATHER BREEN MAKEUP | TRACY RAFFLESON HAIR | GINA KLEINSCHMIDT NAILS | HONEY

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DJING? Jasmine Solano: I started DJing when I was 17, so just over a decade. Roxy Cottontail: 10 years a DJ, in the entertainment industry since birth, the nightlife industry since 2000! Haruka Salt: I have been DJing sinceI was 16. I have been in the DJ game on and off in Tokyo(Japan) and NYC. I started to take seriously on DJing around 2000. 2000-'05 in Japan. I came to US in the summer of ‘05, was on break for couple of years from djing, and started again and have been in the game since '09. So about 5 years in NYC. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS THE FIRST RECORD THAT CHANGED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON MUSIC FROM LIKE TO LOVE? JS: Wow, this definitely happened to me at a young age. I would say Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour" changed my life at 5 years old – It was over as soon as I learned the words to that. Go figure; I would later create an R&B, soul and slow jams show on the radio in Boston ;) RC: “Thriller” when I was 4. Me and Michael have something really special :) (RIP) Haruka Salt: There are so many... to be honest I really don't remember which record.. I always have loved music. I started to play music -- playing the piano and the violin -- when I was two, immediately in love with music. DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A FEMALE DJ IN SUCH A MALE DOMINATED FIELD. JS: It's interesting because I get asked this a lot. I haven't had many difficulties; I tend to

DJ right along with the boys on ma jor bills. I attribute this to the fact that I take my craft seriously, professionally and have a true love for turntable-ism. RC: So many experiences!!! Most heartwarming and empowering: being a positive influence on

if you are male or female, it’s more important,if you are good or not. I know and have seen so many talented female DJs, and male DJs. If you are skilled and talented, even as a female, you will be treated with respect by the industry. I think that we tend to call it "male dominated", because

"I think I have been DJing long enough to not care about being female or male in the industry, and I don't think anyone else should let it get in their way. " -Haruka Salt young women through music is such a gift and a unique, once-ina-lifetime experience. I really love it and also honor the relentless amounts of travel I have been so lucky to enjoy while making amazing memories for people! It really is surreal & incredible. Most men I do deals with are gay which is what I prefer these days. I was in the straight world so long and while it's fun, some straight men come off misogynistic and rude to me. I'd rather just enjoy myself, be adored and not deal with nonsense. I've had a few good eggs ride out for Team Cottontail but I'm also going through a bad breakup so probably not the best woman to ask about male-dominated anything. Lol. Thank god Papa Cottontail set the bar so high ;) HS: I try not to be too sensitive about gender. It doesn't matter

of the field's history. We've been seeing more and more female DJs in the past 5 years - but male DJs started the culture to begin with. I am not insecure about being a female in this industry at all. I am not one of those DJs who started few years ago just because "DJing was cool and fashionable". I have been DJing for more than 10 years and started on vinyls before Serato [a DJ software] existed. I think I have been DJing long enough not care about being female or male in the industry and I don't think anyone else should let it get in their way. WHAT IS THE MOST EXHILARATING AND FRUSTRATING PART OF SPINNING? JS: The most exhilarating part of DJing is that moment the crowd loses themselves with the touch of

amount of promo and emailing that just seems excessive at times. That can be frustrating when you just want to be creative.

RC: Most exhilarating is the natural high from DJing, [There’s] a massive amount of people and seeing your song selection and technique build a vibe from the ground up that has the power to make people glow. I get goosebumps thinking about that feeling. It also gives me anxiety like I've never had before but it goes away after a few songs or a shot. There is also a massive

HS: The most exhilarating thing about spinning is sharing the joy and happiness. I love to make the crowd go nuts and have a great time over music that we love. The most frustrating thing about spinning is playing on broken equipment and with equipment brands I don't like. IF YOU COULD PLAY MUSIC FOR ANYONE (LIVING OR DEAD)

WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHAT 3 SONGS WOULD YOU PLAY? JS: I would play for Betty Davis (dead) and Gwen Stefani (living) and the 3 songs would be: - Dara Puspita "A Go Go" - Platinum Pied Pipers "Now or Never ft. Tiombe Lockhart" - Bunji Garlin "Carnival Tabanca" RC: This is too hard to answer! It would probably just be for my three good witches who are alive and well: Justine D., TC Conroy and Megan Doolittle. I'd play Little Dragon "Ritual Union," Blondie "Tide is High" and "Girls

HOW DO YOU BALANCE LOOKING GOOD, WORKING A CROWD AND BEING COMFORTABLE? WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PIECES AND/OR ACCESSORIES THAT BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE AND EXPRESS WHO YOU ARE? JS: The more I'm dressed like a tropical island ninja, the better! I like wearing clothes I can move

in but that are also fitting for my body. My favorite pieces are the custom Balinese floral head crowns that Rose Red & Lavender makes for me. They keep me in touch with my roots and make me feel regal at the same time. RC: The balancing act is no easy feat. Especially wearing heels which I love/ hate. I really love to look fun and stylish even if I feel I'm not, like when the monthly painters come to town. It's really mind over matter in every situation. So as long as you feel balanced and centered you will be comfortable. I like yoga and

working out,; it keeps me happy with my overall outlook. I have a tendency to get in my head too much, the more I'm out of it the better it is for everyone. Meditation is my best accessory!

DO YOU END AND THE PARTY BEGINS? TO BE CLEAR, HOW DO YOU BEST CHOOSE MUSIC FOR A PARTY, WITHOUT PLAYING TRACKS YOU REALLY AREN'T ABOUT? IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?

HS: I like to wear simple clothes; simple but something interesting and fun. That makes me feel "happy and excited.” I choose to wear unique textiles or designs. I'm not a girly type, so I never wear dresses that makes me look it [girly].

JS: I like a wide range of music from extremely underground to very mainstream. If there's a song I despise I won't play it. But typically I can find that fine balance where the crowd is happy and so am I.

IN TERMS OF A PARTY WHERE

RC: These days I don't think it’s possible to not play tracks you

aren't about; there is just too much music unless you are a producer playing your music only and people are paying a hard ticket for that show. I always prefer to make a playlist and stay up on as much current music as possible. I remember when Shmoney dance came out and my girl Munny looks at me wide eyed and is like, "You need to get this!" So I did. There’s a lot of crap though... much of it are things I'd never listen to on my own but I appreciate the quirkiness. When Billboard started taking YouTube plays into

consideration last year for its top 100 it changed my view on the industry. What sounds popular may not actually be good but because it can look interesting now, it's sellable. I'm constantly entertained by the mythical beast that is the music industry. HS: I go with the flow. I never know till I stand in DJ booth and see the crowds. I usually don't make sets nor practice sets for parties in advance. DJjing is like having conversations with crowd. I start off with a "what's up?" song, then drop songs and see

how crowd react, and I decide where we are going. I also like to make stories in my set. DJing is not just dropping hits for me. Its totally more than that. NAME YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE WHILE YOU'RE SPINNING.

XO Magazine met with Nika Danilova, better known as Zola Jesus, in New York and discussed her music, style and creative process. Taking our Dressing Room feature to new heights, Danilova chose seven forms of inspiration that reflect the spirit of her newly released album Taiga, available now on iTunes and in stores. DESIGNER COLLECTIONS One of my favorite designers is InAisce. Their clothing feels both very ancient and modern. Many of their pieces feel like a futuristic version of feudal Japan. I’m inspired by the narrative in their designs and the aesthetic purity in their vision.

VISUAL ARTISTS I love how Richard Serra creates minimalist sculptures that mirror and interact with the environment. His large scale installations in nature very much remind me of my own goals for Taiga; attempting to synthesize the position of man in nature.

ARCHITECTURE Architects like Tadao Ando and Louis Khan were a huge inspiration when making Taiga. I love how they create structures for man that make room for the natural world. The best architects are those who design around the environment instead of designing on top of it. When writing Taiga, I was very influenced by architecture, and how it creates an artificial platform for humanity.

BEAUTY

STORES

There is an incense and perfume company called Blackbird that I’ve become obsessed with. They are Seattle-based and create scents that feel very native. I like to burn their incense when I’m traveling because it reminds me of home and of the mountains in Washington. [Nika recorded Taiga on an island off the coast of Washington]

My favorite store is Totokaelo in Seattle. I love the strong curation. You can definitely feel them channeling a Pacific Northwest influence through everything they carry - from local artisans to international designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Ann Demeulemeester.

FILM Letter Never Sent (1959) is a Russian movie by Mikhail Kalatozov. It’s about a group of geologists who travel to the taiga in Siberia searching for diamonds. They find the diamonds, but they also find themselves in a fatal confrontation with the wilderness; a truly harrowing exposition of man versus nature.

WORLD LOCALES I recently travelled to Iceland and took some time to explore the far reaches of the country. It’s truly a magnificent place. Since it’s new as a landmass, it gives you a glimpse into what the world looked like before we ever existed.

This issue’s one to watch is none other than Madi Diaz. Her new album, Phantom - the soundtrack to a tale of love, loss and being chased by the feelings that remain after, is one of autumn 2014’s standout albums. Ditching her folk pop sound for something a bit more brighter on the pop spectrum, Madi beautifully captures all the autumn feels, but will have you dancing through them instead of wallowing.
