PEOPLE/STYLE/TRENDS/PLACES X-PRESS FASHION SPRING 13

E D I TO R’S LETTER We understand that you want to be inspired as well as informed so we have filled this issue with cool features, such as a sneak peak into the lives of the Stylish, with our first Style Files section.

I have never been afraid of change. On the contrary, change is a stimulating necessity. From moving to the other side of the word, to rockin’ a new hairdo or even just trying out a different morning coffee place, change is vital to keep stimulated and inspired. In no other industry is this more relevant than in the world of Fashuun! We all know the phrase; what’s “in” one day is “out” the next! And as cutthroat as that sounds, it is a truth that can make us grow.

A designer’s collection may have just come off the runway and already all the fashionistas are clamouring to know what he’ll come up with next! The Fashion Industry is in perpetual motion and the ones who move and evolve with it are the ones who savour the crazy, glitter filled ride. So in order to embrace the evolving nature of fashion (and the revitalising flavour of spring), I introduce you to our new-look X-Press Fashion Magazine – XF!

2

Our Trends page is packed with visual punch making it easier for you to see how spring’s trends might fit into your wardrobe. We also have an awesome Behind The Scenes page from the craziness that was this year’s Style Aid runway show.

For all you stylin’ Perth lads and lasses you are well aware that the Perth Fashion Festival blossoms in Spring so check out our favourite emerging designers showing, with little snippets of their collections and what has inspired them.

Topping off our fresh new look is a dreamy editorial shoot at the majestic art deco Blue Water mansion, which get our minds off this dreary weather and straight into the prints and pastels you’ll be rocking this season.

All our features, editorials, trend reports, will be delivered in new and exciting ways, giving you, the reader, a more interactive and visual experience on all things fashion. So, to put it simply, less yappin’ and more snappin’!

So without any further ado, kick back, relax and enjoy a flick through the new-look, X-Press Fashion Magazine.

RE-STYLE It’s ALL about personal style these days! With some style bloggers getting just as many web hits as huge fashion sites like Vogue.com, it’s no wonder PFF have teamed up with seven of Perth’s most influential voices in the fashion blogosphere to present to you Re-Style 2013. Through the month of August, these seven vintage enthusiasts have been showing us that with a little innovation and inspiration you can be right on trend with pieces from your local thrift store! Hashtag #restyle2013 to see all the styling fun everyone’s been having and make sure to catch the re-style runway show on Friday, September 13, at Fashion Central in Forrest Chase. I’m gonna pop some tags…

BEAUTY SEEKERS With some of the world’s most well known models like Gemma Ward and Nicole Trunfio hailing from Perth, it’s no wonder that the annual Chic Model Search is such a big event in the WA fashion calendar. Watch these fresh faced beauties strut their stuff in front of Australia’s top model scouts and industry professionals or take the plunge and enter in yourself! Heat 1 begins on September 7. Check out the Perth Fashion Festival website for more details. X-PRESS FASHION SPRING 13

Not only one of the best designers to come out of the state but also, unquestionably, the country, Aurelio Costarella teams up with The Western Australian Museum to celebrate the 30 year career of influential WA fashion design in a new exhibition, Aurelio Costarella - A 30 Year Retrospective. The exhibitions will feature pieces from very early in his career right through to his more recent collections. And whilst it’s celebrating Costarella’s work it’s also a celebration of all the collaborations with models, hair and make-up artists, photographers and creatives whom Costarella has worked with thoughout the years. A key exhibition to see, so lock it into your diaries for November 2.

SEE WHAT’S TRENDING FOR

MONO - KEY

Focussing on clean and simple lines in a monochromatic palette, this trend took a no nonsense approach to style. From 60’s mod to abstract shapes, soft and silky textures and a few classic silhouettes shown in new and fresh ways, this sleek and minimalist trend will dominate Spring/ Summer. Block combinations of black and white will be popular and are easy to wear but it is the bold geometric patterns that will make the most impact. KEY TREND PLAYERS - Manning Cartell, Ginger & Smart, Suboo

10

90’S THROW BACK

SUIT YOURSELF

Take a step back to the ‘90s with key silhouettes like crop tops, overalls, cropped pants and co-ordinates all being very popular. Fabrications like plaid, jersey and satin are key but this ‘90s trend is all about how you style it! So try tartan shirts tied around waists, crop tops teamed up with low stung pants or mini skirts, chokers and backpacks accessories all finished off with super high strappy stilettos. KEY TREND PLAYERS - Aje, Emma Mulholland, Watson x Watson

Power dressing takes a new and quirky direction this season with many designers and retailers giving us variations of the traditional woman’s suit. From shorts and blazer coordinates to relaxed and slouchy combos or mixed back with the popular ¾ pant, there will be styles to suit everybody’s needs. KEY TREND PLAYERS – Camilla and Marc, Christopher Esber, Ginger & Smart X-PRESS FASHION SPRING 13

YOUR WARDROBE THIS SPRING.

LUCK BE A LADY

Ladylike looks have swept the runways but this season they are offered with modern and unconventional twists. Dainty nipped at the waist silhouettes are changed up with origami like draping, knee length skirts are offered in complete sheers or with thigh high slits and fabrications go from neoprene and thick cotton jersey to mesh netting, silks and sheer organza’s. KEY TREND PLAYERS - By Johnny, Camilla and Marc, Toni Maticevski

11

FLOWER BOMB

WHITE ON WHITE

Sunny days and blossoming flowers are the perfect inspiration for this high-octane dose of flower power, which will be seen everywhere this spring/summer! Try anything from the more tropical and exotic flowers to romantic and whimsical prints to reflect spring’s fresh, sexy and vital ambiance. Add a touch of floral to your outfit for a hint of femininity or go to the extreme level and wear it from head to toe. KEY TREND PLAYERS – Romance was Born, Shakuhachi, Talulah

All white will keep you looking super fresh this season. Minimal styles are favoured for this head to toe look, using casual cottons and meshes, alongside sheer silks and soft leathers in uncomplicated silhouettes. Style it back with black and neutrals for added impact. KEY TREND PLAYERS – Kahlo, Bec & Bridge, Shakuhachi X-PRESS FASHION SPRING 13

HARBOUR MASTER’S

SPRING BEAUTY ESSENTIALS After a dreary winter concerned with achieving the fine balance between staying dry and not drying out, Spring is an opportunity to embrace a fresh new beauty routine. So this season we’ve sought out the cleverest, no fuss products that can take you from day to night all the while staying Spring fresh!

I’m partial to graphic eyeliner but liquid is perilous and gels require brushes – for the sharpest line in the shortest time you can’t go past EYEKO LONDON SKINNY LIQUID EYELINER $19, from Kit Cosmetics, which stays in place all day and can be built up to a more dramatic shape with a quick flick of the pen.

Lip/cheek double formulas are a handbag-friendly failsafe for those of us who tend to hastily smudge colour on with fingertips and KIT COSMETICS DUO LIP/CHEEK CREME in PRETTY CHEEKY $35, is a smashing colour combo! Extra points for matching with a handful of KIT COSMETICS HAIR PINS $8, because a bobby pin never goes astray.

Amp it up in a hurry by building on your daytime look – a good pressed powder, like the TOO FACED AMAZING FACE POWDER FOUNDARTION $48, will refresh your base and few strokes of the SMASHBOX PHOTO OP EYE BRIGHTENING MASCARA $29, (both from Kit Cosmetics) make for instant event ready.

26

There’s no denying it – makeup looks better with nice skin underneath. So washing and moisturising, morning and night, is a must! I’m enjoying the soft cleanse of JURLIQUE REPLENISHING FOAMING CLEANSER $45, and the UV protectant OLAY COMPLETE DEFENSE SPF30+ DAILY MOISTURISING LOTION, which at $14 is a budget-friendly all rounder.

Nail art is too fun not to dip a finger (or 10) into – I’m sharpening my sketching skills with the CIATE CHALKBOARD MANICURE SET $49 clashed with GLITTER NAIL POLISH $16, both from Kit Cosmetics.

If you really want to make an impact then bling it up with these KIT COSMETICS EYE DIAMANTES $10, which will put a contemporary twist on your catseye.
