ANDREA WOLF Polytechnic West
Since graduating from Polytechnic West late last year, Andrea Wolf has achieved big things. She’s showcased her designs at the Perth Fashion Festival’s Student Runway event, received the X-Press Fashion Graduate Award, and has been invited to share her designs with the fashion elite in July for StyleAID. Inspired by traditional tailoring, Wolf’s designs reference menswear from days of old, rendering her creations clean, crisp and monochromatic. “This year is quite intense so I just want to enjoy it and make the most of any opportunities” she says when asked about her short term goals. “I would like to travel, in particular to Japan, London and Scandinavia, not only for the experience but also because all of these countries remain at the forefront of design, especially in regard to the sustainable movement. I just want to keep creating designs with timeless relevance and uncompromising quality, using sustainable materials and techniques wherever possible, as I believe that artistic creation should not be at the
detriment of someone else’s health or welfare.” Now a graduate, Wolf admits to missing her days of study at Polytechnic West, and has nothing but praise for her course and lecturers. “I wanted to study fashion and textiles but knew I wanted a course that would not only give me freedom in design but also give me the technical skills to create the designs and this course was the perfect combination. I miss pattern making and the tailoring units as well as the couture technique units.” So does this skilled graduate have any words of wisdom to offer fashion students currently completing their studies? “Listen to your lecturers. You will realise afterwards maybe they did know a thing or two so pick their brains while you have the resource! Learn to live without sleep; embrace coffee or green tea for the health conscious. ‘Just passing’ should not be an option. If you don’t care for your work, chances are no one else will either.” 28

GRACE MACRI Edith Cowan University
When Grace Macri first started her studies at Edith Cowan University in Mount Lawley, she was determined to learn the skills needed to become a filmmaker, but soon found herself traversing the ground between film and fashion. Unlike many other fashion courses offered in WA, ECU encourages students to cross the boundaries between art and fashion, something which Macri loved from the get-go. “I always wanted to study film and when I went to the open day at ECU I met a really lovely lady by the name of Justine who showed me some of the contemporary fashion work so I decided to study both. [My favourite aspect of the course was] exploring my work contextually, taking heaps of photos and experimenting with video etc to compliment and explore the ideas that were present within the garments themselves.” Macri’s graduate collection is a sweet and beautiful ode to the ’50s and ’60s, with lashings of lace and vintage fabric for a sweet, feminine look. It’s this aesthetic,
combined with Macri’s exceptional construction skills that saw her awarded the X-Press Fashion Graduate Award. “The inspiration for my graduating collection was my numerous collections of objects that I have been hoarding over the years. Everything from typewriters to tea cups, all quite old and maintaining a certain aesthetic that I tried to emulate through the design and construction of my garments.” As for the future, Macri reveals that she would quite like to teach others about fashion and she’s off to a good start, already working with first and second year students of ECU’s Contemporary Fashion course. “Ultimately I would love to open my own store, but failing that I would like to keep studying and learning and hopefully start stocking my garments in a few stores.” 30

ANNA EXCELL Challenger Institute
Back in 2007, Anna Excell headed along to Challenger Institute’s graduate fashion parade and was incredibly impressed by the quality of garments sent down the runway, so much so that she decided to enrol in the very same course. Three years on and Excell is now a seasoned graduate of Challenger who has fond memories of her time as a student. “I chose this course because I had heard only positive feedback about it. I wanted to come away from the course with a better understanding of garment construction. I wanted to be able to look at any garment and know how it was made. This course was great in that sense because it was really focused on good construction techniques and skills (pattern making, sewing etc).” Upon graduating, Excell hit the ground running, diving head first into the industry she has grown to love. “Since graduating last year I have been doing some freelance designing as
well as having a stall at the Unwrapped Markets. I have also been collaborating with the Skatt Hair company. Earlier this year my range was used for their annual Skattwalk (a hair/fashion show), and at the moment I am making an 18 piece collection for Skatt’s debut at the Hair Expo in Sydney. “In the next five years I hope to have an established and respected label. I would also love to work on the design team of some of my favourite labels. That kind of experience is invaluable and cannot be taught.” When asked whether she has any tips for fashion students yet to complete their course, Excell has plenty of sage advice to offer. “You can’t be perfect at everything, but you should strive to be! Always pay attention and write lots of notes. Trust me, you’ll need them later on down the track, when you’re at home and there’s no lecturer around to help!” 32
Do you see this year´s fad or next season´s fashion? If you’re a creative thinker who loves expressing your art through fashion, then ECU can help turn your passion into a profession. The ECU Fashion degree course is tailor-made to nurture your creative side and challenge you to develop and grow as an artist. All within a very friendly environment with supportive lecturers who are experts in the fields of fashion and design. At ECU, the road to a career in the fashion industry is truly open – as are our mid-year enrolments. CHLOE JONES
Central Institute Of Technology
When it comes to beautiful, whimsical designs, there’s no going past Central Institute Of Technology graduate Chloe Jones. With a strong love of vintage, pastels, feminine silhouettes and eclectic objects, Jones’ design aesthetic is simply divine. “I am a huge fan of Tim Walker,” she says when asked about her inspirations. “I love the whimsicality and fantasy of his photographs. When I design I like to create a story and character in my head and design a garment around that. I also like to play around with shape and silhouette, and get inspired during the toiling process.” Upon the completion of her studies last year, Jones set off on an overseas adventure, and has since returned, ready to launch a label with fellow Central graduate Natalie Fardella. “I hope that within the next five years I will have a label that is established enough to be my full time career and I am passionate about it being a Perth based label. The goal is to be able to have a shop/studio where the label would be based.”
A lover of textile manipulation, Jones thanks her course for teaching her how to get the most out of the fabrics she works with. “I liked that Central gave me the opportunity to really explore the creative side of design and let me develop my own style. I wanted to learn the process of making a garment from start to finish and be able to incorporate textiles into my designs. “My favourite part is the designing and toiling stage, where you get to explore different shapes and silhouettes. I also really enjoyed using the textile facilities, and really got into using textile manipulations in my garments.” When it comes to offering advice to students currently studying fashion, Jones says that hard work and dedication are key. “Stick with it, if it’s something you’re passionate about then all the hard work and sleepless nights will be worth it in the end!” 34
KATHRYN BELL Curtin University
At Curtin University’s graduate fashion parade last year, Kathryn Bell stole the show; sending models down the runway in stunning garments quirkily accessorised with bird cages and incredible millinery creations. Fitting then that she’s flirting with the idea of calling her label Blake and Bird… “But this name may change again,” she shares. “I’m very indecisive when it comes to finding a label name that explains my work and myself as an individual. I would say to people for now, remember my name and not my label.” Though she may be struggling to choose the right name, her designs are utterly perfect, playing with textures and silhouettes in a sophisticated way. You might expect an accomplished designer such as Bell to have a deep rooted fascination of the fashion world but she reveals to X-Press that her first love was painting. “I was initially a painter, and wanted to broaden my ideas through textiles. When I began my degree in fashion I was hoping to get a sense of awareness for the fashion world. I loved seeing the amazing creations that were happening all around
Photographs by Romain Duquesne, Styling by Emma Bergmeier, Model: Brittany at Chadwick’s, Hair Styling by Head Studio, Make Up by Constance Bowles, Stylists Assistants: Hannah McGrath and Madalin Frodsham.
the world and it inspired me to one day create a collection of my own. In the end, the degree has led me to the fascination of extending garments beyond the body; I mainly work with hats and head pieces. “My prior collection was more macabre and I enjoy the theatrical darkness in Tim Burton films. I have always been a bit creeped out by dolls and their life-like qualities and so I decided to incorporate them into my headpieces. The biggest inspiration I have at the moment is when I’m out and all my friends are wearing these crazy hats that I have made, this makes me want to take my ideas further.” Bell’s goals as a designer are simple, she wants to continue doing what she loves, and hopes that one day, she can make a living from designing. In the meantime, she encourages aspiring designers to “bounce ideas off friends and family,” and “always be ready to express your opinions and thoughts, even if someone else 35 doesn’t agree.”

you desire a spot of serious When the temperature plummets and e really is only one thing ther shopping with the sun on your back, Meccas Singapore and g ppin Sho . for it, a fashtastic break to Asia sker away from Perth, and Kuala Lumpur are located a mere whi and market precincts that both are home to fantastic boutiques will have you shopping ’til you drop. By Kate MacDonald
Singapore
Firstly, if shopping is your thing then you are in the right company; young Singaporeans are mad, crazy devotees of fashion and Singapore certainly has something for everyone. As this destination is just over four hours away via flight, and is in the same time zone, a quick freshen up is all you will need to be shopping ready post-flight. Taxis are ridiculously cheap in Singapore and the MRT public transport system is super efficient, so no matter where you stay, you’ll be close to the action. If however, you find yourself lost, there’s no shortage of friendly locals happy to help you find your way. For label junkies who want to pay homage to the gods of all things designer then Orchard Road is the place to batter your weary wallet. The Ion Orchard shopping centre is a magnificent glass extravaganza, which is home to labels such as Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and Louis Vuitton. Singapore also has the pick of the high street stores with Witchery and Mimco, plus European stores such as Topshop and H & M on offer. If rummaging through markets for vintage steals is more your thing then Singapore has various Flea markets to whet your appetite. One of the absolute stand outs is the Zouk Flea market, situated in one of Singapore’s hippest nightclubs, so you can listen to tunes while exploring racks of second hand goodies. Market lovers should also try the Bugis Market, which is the epicentre of local culture and offers a vibrant and unique shopping experience with bargains to boot, sure to keep you busy for hours. At the end of the day when you’ve shopped and conquered, it becomes time to hit the bar circuit. Bar connoisseurs will love The Clinic in Clarke Quay, a left-of-centre watering hole decked out in hospital chic. Try a syringe cocktail and kick back in wheelchairs for an odd night out.
Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur is home to the tallest twin buildings in the world, but this thriving city has a lot more going on than that just architecture, with a plethora of shopping opportunities for any ardent barganista. For somewhere to rest your weary feet, try The Piccolo Hotel in KL which has a luxe feel without the luxe price tag, and is located near the buzzing Golden Triangle. If shopping centres are your thing then Bukit Bintang will be your one-stop-shop for a retail fix. Be sure to check out Bintang walk, which is littered with open-air cafes and eateries, which will help you to keep up your strength while soldiering on with all that shopping! For those who want everything in one place, and I mean everything, then Central Markets in KL has it all. The building itself was constructed forever ago and though it’s a Malaysian heritage site, you will find plenty of modern fashion on offer. The Batik Emporium also dishes up plenty of designer threads, plus a market full of arts and crafts to appease your inner tourist. A short distance away from KL, you will find the islands of Langkawi and Laubuan; both are duty free and you can not only stock up on oodles of gizmos and gadgets but also every perfume under the sun. If your wallet isn’t suffering from all that shopping, a trip to the Genting Highlands aka the Las Vegas of Malaysia, is a must. Getting to the Highlands can feel like an adventure, but with the world’s fastest and longest cable car to get to the mountain peak, it’s a comfortable adventure indeed. Once you arrive, there are plenty of casinos to whittle away whatever cash (if any) you have left. To book you shopping holiday, contact STA Travel (www.statravel.com.au) or Harvey World Travel (www.harveyworld.com.au). X- PRESS FASHION WINTER 2010

People tend to hibernate in winter, not least of all because the perception is that it’s harder to look good when the weather is cold. Sure, you don’t have beach hair and a tan to fall back on, and yes, you’re battling the wind and rain, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look amazing. Don’t get cold feet this winter when it comes to makeup and hair; try these skin savers and makeup tips to make sure you still look hot despite the cold. In winter it’s all about moisturising. If you’re not careful you’ll end up with itchy, scratchy, blotchy, dry skin. Not fun and not a good base for your makeup. The key is to use a good, hydrating moisturizer and there are several fantastic products on the market at the moment. One of the best is Trilogy Age Proof CoQ10 Booster Serum 30mL $43.00, which is an intensive treatment specially formulated to help rejuvenate skin that is tired or dull. Smokey eyes are still a favourite, but the look is more metallic this season. Try M.A.C Eye Shadow $32.00 in Print (muted grey flecked with shimmer) or Knight Divine (carbon black with silver/blue reflects). M.A.C eyeshadows rock because the highly concentrated pigment results in fantastic coverage. Once you go M.A.C, you’ll never go back! Moving south, it’s important not to forget your nails in winter – especially if you’re going to sport gloves. There’s nothing worse than pulling your hand out of a fabulous leather glove to reveal cracked or worse, chewed, nails. Grey and taupe tones are huge this winter. “Paint these hues onto your nails for terrific trendy talons,” says Eleanor Pendleton, editor of grittypretty.com, who recommends ORLY Nail Lacquer in Mirror Mirror $18.95. Thankfully, Orly’s latest collection, Matte Couture, has this look nailed. Choose from three striking matte nail lacquers (all are $18.95 each) that work with any style to instantly update your look. Now that you’ve hit the nail on the head, let’s talk heads or more Replicate Marie Antoinette’s curly locks with specifically hair. Head Studio owner and Artistic Director, Marie Cain, Redken products. By Caitlin Irving comments, “by simply looking at the streets of Perth at the moment, you’ll see that Balayage is set to stay. Wherever you’re at with your colour, it’s all about lightness and brightness on the ends.” “The exciting thing about trends and street fashion today is that simply by having a great colour and complimenting it with the perfect cut, you can get away with wearing that ‘bed head’ disheveled texture in your hair,” says Marie. Eleanor adds, “It’s all about texture, texture, texture. You no longer have to worry about looking disheveled. Textured bangs are back! Embrace a natural wave and enhance it with a texturising spray for a chic and undone look.” Try Redken Body Full Instant Bodifier $28.00 and the Redken Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray $28.95. Marie takes us through the steps to imitate her namesake, Marie Antoinette’s hair from this issue. “For a toned down version, start by loosely tonging your hair, let it cool, then spray Kevin Murphy Fresh Hair Dry Shampoo $26.95 through the roots to the ends. Brush through with a soft bristle brush. Top knot your hair, but leave the fringe section out, then back comb and brush the fringe section into the top knot. Grip with pins and spray L’Oréal Elnett for hold.” Or if you’re heading out somewhere special, pop into Christian James Hairdressing in Mt Lawley to get the star treatment and a top knot to rival Carrie Bradshaw. And if you find, after all that, you still have cold feet – then buy a pair of doona boots - they’ll keep your tootsies warm and toasty! By Caitlin Irving

Modern Gadgets Keeping It Retro By Tom Varian The sleek, curved lines of today's gadgets come after a legacy of chunky and sharp grandparents. As in fashion, trends rise through popular choice and dominate the landscape. And like in fashion, designs get repeated, often because a great design can transcend the function of the device and be utilised on something completely different. So what happens when the cutting edge meets the blunted past? We picked out some modern tech with retro flair to help you stay modern, but keep it in the era of your choice.
Hulger Handsets
First up are some products to help take your mobile or VOIP usage down a couple of generations. Pigeonhole exclusively stock a few phone handsets made by UK design company Hulger. These retro handsets plug into your PC for Skype or mobile phone for just some straight up ‘handsfree’. With a few different models to choose from, each from a different age in design, these are fancy but they aren’t cheap.
Bluetooth Retro Handset
Want to feel a handset in your hand, but can’t see the point of the good old fashioned cord? Well pair up an aptly named Bluetooth Retro Handset and marvel as you remember how phones never used to get hot against your face. Handily charges over USB and is only available on thinkgeek.com for US$29.99.
USB NES Controller
Okay so your PC or laptop can play the latest games on Steam, but fire up a MAME or NES emulator and you will be in for an unco experience on the keyboard. But bang in a USB NES pad and play like you used to, and instead feel the burn of a pre-ergonomics era of square edges. It’s not just limited to NES controllers either, most classic game pads can be wrangled into a USB port with an adapter. On thinkgeek.com for US$29.99 or consult your nearest google.
Leather Folio Case
Got a Kindle, Kobo or iPad? Well, take them up a level in class and function with an aesthetically pleasing case. They range from the ridiculously expensive Orbino case (pictured) to the indie designs found on etsy. There’s no limit of choice, and a leather folio doesn’t hurt anyone’s look. Check out www.orbino.com or search etsy.com.

FASHIONABLE FITNESS Ah, winter. The season of woolly scarves, hot chocolate and lamb roasts... And the time of year least congruent with getting out of the house and getting active. As easy as it may be to dissolve into the couch in a baked-goods induced stupor during the colder months, it’s definitely something you’ll be regretting when the sun starts shining once more and you realise you’ve got the muscle definition of a Blob-fish (seriously, Google that shit). So, how to get yourself motivated to ditch the snuggie and head to the great outdoors/the gym? Well, you can start by forgetting about your thread-bare track pants and old Supre singlet. Just the thought of that alone is enough to make anyone want to hit the snooze button and dive back under the doona, and rightly so. What you need are work-out clothes that make you feel comfortable, stylish and good about yourself. Just because you’re going to get your clothes all sweaty, doesn’t mean they have to look like crap, right? Looking and feeling good about what you’re dressed in will make exercise more fun, whether you’re riding your bicycle, doing yoga or pumping iron in the gym. Luckily, designers cottoned onto this a while back, and now there are some really awesome sport-inspired trends to get into. Check out just how cool getting fit can be... By Hannah McGrath Back to the Future For the girl who loves to hit up the gym, has a personal trainer, and is serious about getting super fit; sleek, fluid lines, acid yellow, black, grey and orange. Think wetsuits made modern, Skins (no, not the painfully indie TV series. I mean those amazing muscle-compression garments that make it easier to work out and also look slick and toocool; Head to Jim Kidd Sports to find them), pop-coloured bustier tops accessorised with a no-nonsense man style plastic watch and a super high, shiny pony tail. Take your inspiration from designers like Lisa Marie Fernandez (available on net-a-porter.com), local designer Jaime Lee Major (the bustier top from her debut collection ticks all the right boxes), and scour your local op shop for 1980s two-piece neon wetsuits Balletic For the girl who prefers yoga, pilates, or a dance class over working up a sweat in a gym; comfortable, delicate, over-sized, grey marle, dusty pink and cream. Think off-duty ballerina, soft jersey bodysuits, long-sleeved wrap tops and deliciously thick leggings. Seek out garments made from quality material, like American Apparel’s Triblend range for something way softer and warmer than cotton, that drapes beautifully on the body. Take your inspiration from designers like Stella McCartney and her silk-jersey confections (as well as her Adidas collaboration, of course) and pilates/yoga wear label, Abi and Joseph (head online to abiandjoseph.com to check out their elegant, fashion-meets-fitness designs). Ring My bell For the girl who would prefer not to do any sort of prescribed exercise; refined, sweet, 1970s-inspired, floral prints, ribbed stockings and, of course, a brightly coloured helmet. Whoever said that working out had to be a chore? The best type of exercise is incidental (so you don’t even feel like you’re doing it!), so leave your car at home, get yourself a pretty bicycle, and embrace a type of fitness regime that doesn’t require the traditional uniform. Think full, ‘70s skirts, flat boots, a chunky knitted cardigan and a vintage satchel in your front basket. Find yourself the perfect vintage dress or skirt at your local Vinnies, or to make it even easier, try fail-safe vintage spot, Winifred and Bance. For the perfect bike to compliment your perfect outfit, check out Pigeonhole, they stock incredibly beautiful 1940s-style Kronan bicycles from Sweden that will make the prospect of getting healthy a whole lot more stylish. So, instead of thinking of exercise as a dull chore, treat it like a style celebration! At least then, if it all seems too hard and all you feel like doing is getting a burger (amen to that), you’ll be more inclined to show off your lovely duds at somewhere cool and vaguely healthy (like Jus Burgers, Grill’d or Flipside), rather than scuttling away to the Maccas drive-through.
