SUMMER FESTIVAL & EVENTS

What would living in Western Australia be like if there was no music festivals? The beach would be even more populated, that’s for sure. Heading to the Galleria or Carousel would be a momentous occasion for more than just a few of us, and we’d probably spend more quality time with family. That would be horrid! That’s why we’re in luck that we get to frolic around big open fields several times a year here in our great sunny state. We’ve already had a great festival season so far this summer. It kicked off with Parklife highlighted by the return of Death From Above 1979. Then there was Snoop Dogg bringing the gin and juice to South Perth for Summadayze; not to mention the slice of South West paradise encapsulated within Southbound. And there’s still heaps of incredible things to come... The Big Day Out was there before everything else and they boast a strong line-up in an excellent new location. Soundgarden headlined the event in 1997, and they return as part of their comeback tour that has picked up rave reviews at every stop. You add two forms of The Bronx, some Best Coast, Battles and Odd Future, and you’ve got a great bill. The Future Music / Soundwave weekender has become something of a yearly highlight for those with ‘varied’ musical tastes, and this year should be no different. You’ve got New Order, Aphex Twin and The Rapture one day, then Mastodon, Lamb Of God and Slipknot the next. Huzzah! West Coast Blues ‘N’ Roots boasts yet another amazing line-up with Steve Earle, The Pogues and My Morning Jacket among those making rare west coast appearances. Then there’s still greats like indie paradise Laneway Festival, the yet to be announced Groovin The Moo and the RTRfm local love fest that is In The Pines. With so much to do festival-wise in the first half of this year, you better plan your time carefully! Read all about it in X-Press’ Festival Guide! Published by: Columbia Press Pty.Ltd. TWO DECADES OF DAYS OUT Long before we were blessed with several major festivals monthly in summer, the Big Day Out reigned supreme. The must have ticket for any cool kid before they head back to school for another year, the BDO has long been synonymous with bringing the biggest bands of the day to Australia for audiences of all ages to enjoy. MATTHEW HOGAN recalls his 10 favourite BDO bands.
1. THE FLAMING LIPS, 2004
3. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, 2002 & 2004
This was a bigger than usual BDO. As Metallica headlined the main stage to 90 per cent of the attendees, Wayne Coyne led his Lips through their only ever Perth show on some small stage off on the side. The band set up their own equipment as a hardcore band played on the stage next to them and when they finally went on it was an explosion of balloons, confetti and about eight songs all up. The mad hatter even convinced us that if we yelled loud enough, Lars would take notice and they’d stop their set for several minutes... Dunno if it worked.
Seeing QOTSA develop before my eyes at the BDO was a pleasure. A hundred or so Kyuss fans booed at Coldplay before Josh and Nick took the stage at Bassendean in 2001, and when they returned two years later they were one of the biggest bands in the world, fresh from topping the Hottest 100 with No One Knows. The question in the air was ‘Will Dave Grohl drum for them?’ The answer was no.
2. RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, 2008 One of the hottest bands the BDO ever brought to Australia, the 1996 headliners returned on their all-too-brief reunion tour. 30,000 fans yelling ‘Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me’ over and over probably has a lot to do with why the residents of Claremont are forever angry.
4. RAMMSTEIN, 2001 & 2011 A live spectacle in every sense of the word, no band has ever put on a more explosive show than Germany’s Rammstein. The firesuit in 2001 was nothing compared to the all out war scene that unfolded on stage last year.
5. IGGY & THE STOOGES, 2006 & 2011 The fact that this man is alive and still going strong has made him worth the price of admission on two non-consecutive occasions.
6. SLEATER-KINNEY, 2006 Off the back of their classic album The Woods, Carrie Brownstein led the riotous rockers through a highly memorable Australia Day set at BDO Sydney, complete with a live reading of the history of Australia.
7. THE AVALANCHES, 2001 Days before their still most recent album came out, The Avalanches played an amazing show in Bassendean. A tambourine flew past my face into a lucky fans hands, but security soon wanted the instrument back.
8. AT THE DRIVE-IN, 2001 They didn’t play Perth, but the YouTube footage of them playing Sydney is pretty much the greatest thing ever. Baaaaa!
9. NEIL HAMBURGER, 2003 “Why are the bathrooms at McDonalds so clean? Because that’s where they prepare the food.” Never has an act been booed so much at a BDO as the ‘comedian’ who introduced Frenzal Rhomb.
10. MARILYN MANSON, 1999 Manson’s stage dive at a bottle throwing fan = something a teenager at his first BDO will never forget.

BIG STAGE DEBUTANTS Every year a dozen or so local bandS win competitions enabling them to play a major festival alongside their heroes. JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD chats to some recent winners in Sam Perry, Antonio Paul and Arts Martial.
In an era when the music business is in bewilderment and disarray, a little attention may be all a local musician can hope for. Enter the festival band competition. Competitions to appear on the line-up of some of the biggest festivals across the nation are giving local artists the chance to play alongside some of the biggest names in the music world. Such competitions also present up-and-comers with the chance to be seen by record company executives, network with promoters and strut their stuff in front of music fans, as well as offer the opportunity to attract media attention and lucrative distribution opportunities. Three WA-based acts are living proof of the boost such competitions can give to the career of rising musicians. Electronic effects purveyor Sam Perry took out top honors in the 2011 Path To Laneway competition, which afforded him the opportunity to perform at the WA leg of the St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival last year. Last March, Bunbury indie pop aficionados Antonio Paul shared a stage with Cut Copy, The Drums and The Go! Team at Groovin’ The Moo, as the winners of the Groovin’ The Prince competition.
Earlier this month, punchy pop-rockers Arts Martial won a coveted Triple J Unearthed spot which led to their appearance at Southbound. As all three acts attest, the lure of such competitions is simply the chance to be seen and heard. “I’d never played on a festival stage before and was having feedback problems with my mic and effects at the time, so an outdoor stage with sub woofers the size of me was lovely. At the time I thought I did well and the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves, though I’m embarrassed to look back at the footage now. It’s a fantastic learning curve, put it that way,” Perry says. “[It was a] great weekend,” Arts Martial vocalist/guitarist Jarrod Ross attests. “We met some cool people and watched some awesome sets.” “It was a little bit better then playing to empty pubs, so expectations were very low,” says Antonio Paul’s Marc Antonio. “True Story: I went home after we played, vomited and had a two hour power nap. After that little pit stop, I came back and partied harder then ever.” Despite the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity offered to winners of such competitions, all three acts agree that the prospect of taking to the stage earlier in the day and being dealt the hard task of kicking off festival proceedings can be daunting to say the least. “We all thought we’d be playing to the sound guy so it was nice to see people bouncing so early,” Ross says, while Perry adds: “ I was used to playing in empty bars and open mic nights so being on early wasn’t really an issue for me – or maybe I was just shitting myself too much to notice the crowd.” Getting performing duties over and done with early does have its benefits, however, with the rest of the festival affording younger acts the opportunity to hang out backstage with their better known contemporaries. “Our bass player wet himself seeing [Arctic Monkey’s] Alex Turner,” Ross says. “This guy walked past me with a massive cheesy [grin] on his face, I remember thinking ‘who is that guy?’ It was Gotye,” Antonio says, with Paul adding: “There was a massage centre backstage and I went to go and get one and Bob’s your uncle, Darwin Deez was there already. So I pretty much got a massage with Darwin Deez. He made a few jokes, he’s actually really shy.”

FESTIVAL FASHION Emma Bergmeier gets on her high horse, dissecting festival fashion and its many shortcomings.
A drawcard for the sartorially good, bad and downright ugly, music festivals are a great place to people watch (and listen to some music if that’s your thing), especially if surplus fashion fails bring a smile to your dial. Not that long ago ravers set the dress code at festivals with their furry fluoro fashion failures, but these days it seems as if everyone wants to look ‘indie’ and ‘cool’ (read: generic) while wearing the least amount of clothing possible. My biggest gripe at recent festivals has been the crazy amount of nips and sideboob on show. There’s nothing more distracting than being eyeballed by some random’s areola while trying to watch your favourite band, and with guys and girls alike rocking singlets with deep cut arm holes at the moment, there have been nip slips here, there and everywhere. Thanks to certain festivals such as Stereosonic imposing a ‘don’t take your fucking t-shirt off, you douchebag’ policy, shirtless guys stalking festivals in packs have become a rarity, replaced by groups of fellas strolling around in skimpy singlets hoping the breeze will expose their teats. Guys aren’t the only ones guilty of this crime – what is with all the sideboob ladies? Sure the guys with their nips out love it, but didn’t your mother ever teach you to leave something to the imagination? Maybe I’m just getting old… You know what else baffles me (and my aging sensibilities)? Peeps getting around without shoes at festivals, that’s what. Since when did comfortable, practical footwear become a thing of the past? I would never leave the house without shoes, let alone go to a festival, dance in a moshpit then step into a portaloo without some form of footwear. How hard is it to put on a pair of sandals or sneakers to protect your tootsies before heading out?
It’s so easy to not be a shoe-less teat exposer at festivals – there are retailers far and wide which stock fashionable threads that are festival-friendly –Globalize, Billie & Rose, Planet Clothing… just to name a few. Vintage shops are also fantastic for festival friendly clothes – Oh Henry in Northbridge has a huge range of second hand items that are cheap and chic. Want to have a bit of fun with your outfit without exposing your chest genitals? Take inspiration from Kimbra or The Kooks, both acts love rocking crazy vintage ensembles and look awesome doing it. Hit up one of you local op shops for something wild and wacky – just avoid polyester or your pits will sweat as if they’re getting paid to. Whatever ensemble you end up choosing, don’t forget to slip, slop, slap, cover your bits, wear shoes and have fun! Your future self will thank you.
