PARTYING WITH

PURPLE SNEAKER DJS

Who’s your all time favourite artist to perform alongside at a festival with? Look, it’s no secret that we are really good friends with the Bluejuice lads. Aside from being lovely, hilarious, handsome and talented they are also one of the hardest working live bands out so it’s hard not to respect and enjoy that.

What festival would you like to play that you haven’t yet?

Those crazy lads Martin Novosel (PhDJ) and Randall Stagg started the legendary Purple Sneakers club a good five years ago and have now pretty much taken over the world. They’ve supported the likes of Miike Snow, Bloc Party, Odd Future, The Rapture and more and have played Big Day Out, Parklife, Field Day, Splendour In The Grass and Groovin’ The Moo to name a few. We get the lowdown from Randall on their festivities.

Well we have almost played them all so I think I’m going to have to go outside of the country and think global domination worldwide and go with Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.

Tell us what happens backstage at festivals - any big secrets or rumours you could confirm? All the gnarly shit you can imagine is true. Yes, Flava Flav ate some food backstage from the catering area. There was also a golf cart incident involving Martin and Jo from Big Scary. Matt Corby is a hugger and Hermitude are the nicest people alive. In the end of it all, you get that much excitement backstage and combine it with an abundance of alcohol and baby, it’s on.

What’s it like being on a festival tour, are you guys on red bull all the time or what?

Easily the Groovin’ The Moo tour earlier this year. Everyone was just ready to do it and because it was a touring festival it meant you got to make friends with so many people from the merch dudes to the other acts on the festival.

Sometimes there are moments where you think “I really need to crash here, I’m exhausted” and then someone you know comes running past your tent and suddenly you’re up on your feet again because you do not want to miss out on a thing. Everyone being together keeps the energy going.

What is the most awkward experience you’ve had at a festival?

Any other crazy shit to add about festivals?

We broke a couple of laws recently that are best left unexplained.

Everyone needs to experience a festival at least once. There is so much variety happening in this country in terms of lineups and the frequency of festivals, there really is something for everyone.

You guys have played some pretty huge festivals - what are the standouts?

Martin - took HIS dad to GTM this year - what was that experience like? Randall are you gonna be all over that in the near future for festivals you guys play? Mr Novosel was proud as punch. Aside from the fact the guy is an absolute legend, I think it was really cool he got to see his son in action. As for my parents attending a festival, absolutely. They are both very musical people and I know they’ve been excited to see a show, I’m just mindful of picking the right one.

What festival tips would you give to punters for the summer best outfit ideas, drinks, getting on stage, crazy shit... Seriously, it sounds ridiculous but the most important one is to give a shit. You should give a shit about the acts you watch, you should give a shit about your friends and everyone else in that festival. Get a vibe of community. Marty and I have always been about doing whatever we want in a considerate fashion so that’s how everyone else should play it out. Also, if you are anywhere near as pale as I am, buy some fucking sun-screen.
