It’s time to pull on your thickest pair of wooly socks, get that heater out of storage and dust off your coats and scarves because hallelujah, winter’s icy grasp has finally reached Perth. After what felt like an endless summer, the weather in the west is starting to cool off a little, just in time for the release of our warm winter edition – The Secret Garden. Taking some cues from the ravishing royal wedding (although obviously not from the sartorially challenged Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie), The Secret Garden is an ode to English garden parties where scones, tea, roses and games of croquet reign supreme. Shot on location at the picturesque Melville Nurseries in Carmel, The Secret Garden celebrates fashions for the cooler months, with lashings of long sleeve shirts, beautiful boots and denim galore. Way more than just a flower farm, Melville Nurseries is a stunning property that sprawls over seven huge acres, boasting a Rose Heritage Café, a French style garden and every kind of rose imaginable, making it the perfect place for X-Press Fashion to bring The Secret Garden to life. Also on offer in this hot winter edition is the Class Of 2010 feature, which showcases the work of our state’s most promising emerging designers. Recipients of last year’s X-Press Fashion Graduate Award, a prize which recognises excellence in design and construction, the designers on show undoubtedly have incredibly promising futures in fashion ahead of them, which is why we’ve taken the time to find out what makes them tick. From all of us here at X-Press we hope you have a wonderful winter, and enjoy the fantastic fashions that come along with the season.

AS THE MENACING WINTER CHILL CREEPS INTO OUR HOUSES, BEDS AND TOES, IT CAN FEEL LIKE THERE’S NO ESCAPE FROM PALE FROSTY FACES, WIND RUFFLED HAIR AND ICY PINK NOSES. TAKE SOLACE IN AN UNLIKELY ALLY, AND THAW OUT WITH THESE GORGEOUS HEAT-BASED SPA TREATMENTS THAT WILL WARM YOU UP, WHILE PUTTING THE ROSINESS BACK INTO YOUR CHEEKS QUICKER THAN A DATE WITH A JAR OF VEGEMITE.

Hot Stone Massage A massage is a wonderful way to return your mind and body to a state of bliss at any time, but in winter it can seem unappealing to strip down to your underwear while praying your masseuse doesn’t have cold hands! Enter your new best friends: hot stones. The massage therapist will glide heated rocks over your body, infusing your muscles with delicious warmth and dissolving every milligram of tension and stress! This will usually take an hour to 90 minutes, so you’ll be well and truly defrosted. Besides being relaxing, massage stimulates circulation and helps to shoo away any unwanted toxins, which means a healthier body for you! Our top pick is the brand new Djurra Aveda Spa in Fremantle, where you’ll experience an eco-friendly, swoon worthy hot stone massage, along with a ritual foot soak and exfoliation; for bonus warming points, check them out at djurra.com.au.

Sodashi Thermal Infusing Facial Feeling glacial? Then how about a heated facial?! If the idea of slipping into the snuggliest, most relaxing treatment bed of all time while a spa therapist worships your face with all-natural, chemical-free skincare products appeals to you, then you’re in luck with this ultra dreamy experience. Also known as ‘Nature’s Face Lift’, the Sodashi Thermal facial is unique. After your face has been cleansed, massaged, exfoliated and a serum and mask applied (all tailored to your skin type, of course), gauze is lightly placed over your whole face (yep, that includes eyes and mouth, but nostrils are left free to breathe!) and covered with thermal mud. Over the course of 20 minutes or so, while having your arms and feet massaged, the mud slowly heats up which allows the ingredients underneath to infuse into the skin. Neat! Towards the end it does get quite warm and it is a strange feeling to have your face wrapped up like a mummy, but the results are definitely worth it, your skin will glow for days.

Hydrotherapy Spa With so many fancy beauty newcomers around, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about some of the more basic pampering options suitable for the chillier months. Take the humble spa bath for example! This is the ultimate indulgence for those who want to be enveloped in total, forget-all-your-cares luxury. Recommended to be experienced au naturale (!!), most private hydrotherapy spas will have goodies such as dead-sea mud or bath salts added to make you feel extra special. The benefits of a spa are numerous and include: increased circulation, gentle water massage, relief of muscle pain and it has also been proven that endorphins (chemicals which reduce stress and promote a feeling of wellbeing) are released during use. Oh! And I forgot to mention the fresh fruit, choccy and champers that accompany this treatment – sure to make you warm n fuzzy! If you’re keen to try either of the two above delights, contact Bodhi J Health & Beauty Spa in Wembley at bodhij.com.au.

8

Cheapies If the wallet is feeling a little light, the following recommendations should assist you towards a thrifty glow: Get down to your nearest yoga class for a warming stretch that will tone you up and leave you with gorgeous flushed cheeks, if you’re feeling REALLY brave, then give Bikram Yoga a go – a 90 minute yoga workout in a 40 degree room, you won’t be complaining about the cold after this one! Brew up a fresh, hot mug of rosehip or green tea, both are antioxidant-rich, which means is fantastic for the skin, and will warm you up from the inside out! Have your own spa at home. Run a bath, throw in some epsom salts, light a scented soy-candle, pop on a face mask and bathe your cares and goosebumps away! By Annette Gohl

WA blogs on the rise…

Over the past couple of years, the internet has exploded with fashion bloggers, and the fashion industry is definitely taking notice. Rumi Neely from Fashion Toast can be seen sitting front row at many a fashion show, Marc Jacobs named a handbag after popular US based blogger BryanBoy, and 13-year-old Tavi from Style Rookie has already interviewed the likes of the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte and Commes des Garcons head designer Rei Kawakubo. Most fashion bloggers aren’t quite as high profile, preferring to use their blog to show off their personal style and share their fashionable finds with the world. WA certainly isn’t slacking off in the blog department - as these four bloggers undoubtedly prove.

The Vintage Valley

Autilia’s Blog

(www.thevintagevalley. blogspot.com)

Effortlessly stylish, Autilia and her blog ooze creativity. With an innate ability to pull off anything from a fringed kimono to pinktipped hair, Autilia somehow manages to look incredibly chic no matter what she wears. Every outfit has an unexpected twist that makes it uniquely Autilia – you definitely won’t find her in jeans and a t-shirt anytime soon. Expect some extreme wardrobe envy after you visit her blog.

The gorgeous Ally puts together some amazing outfits with beautiful vintage pieces, and luckily there’s a chance you can snap them up for yourself from her online store, also called The Vintage Valley. You can also find snaps from her everyday life and discover some splendid new tunes in her weekly ‘Music Mondays’ feature. If Marilyn Monroe was alive today, this is pretty much how she would dress.

The Velvet Bow

Stolen From Grandma

(www.stolenfromgrandma. blogspot.com)

Jessie combines an enviable vintage wardrobe with classic, feminine silhouettes to create divine retro-inspired looks. Her op-shop finds will inspire you to trawl through your own St Vinnies, or you can steal a bit of her style through her Etsy store. As well as her beautiful outfit photos, you can find sublimely girlie DIYs on her lovely blog. Try the tutorial on how to turn ‘90s palazzo pants into a cute pair of shorts, or find out how to make a sweet sleeveless blouse.

Despite what her blog’s name suggests, Clare’s outfits look anything but stolen from grandma; instead they’re young, whimsical and quirky. With an eye for ultra feminine style, Clare mixes op-shop finds with chain store pieces to create charming, vintage-inspired looks. Whether it’s a cute collared floral dress or a vintage pair of floral Doc Martens, you’ll find them captured in her whimsical and dreamy photos.

SLIM AND SEXY SONY S SERIES BY TOM VARIAN For those of us who won’t compromise on style but also don’t want to take a bite of the supremely designed, but almost cult-like iFruit, there aren’t too many laptop options. After all, Windows isn’t exactly synonymous with style. But Sony have been making great strides recently to really raise their VAIO laptop range to new heights, with their latest minimalist offering being the VAIO S Series - a slim, sharp, light model that doesn’t settle on power. Available in a few different internal configurations, the whole line boasts a lightweight, magnesium alloy chassis, aluminium palm rest and keyboard, back-lit keys, DVD read/write, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, Bluetooth, Wifi-n, HDMI and a dedicated graphics card as standard. The 13.3 inch screen isn’t massive, but it’s a bright, LED lit, respectable 1366x768. One of the most immediate things you notice is the weight, coming in at just 1.7 kilos and feeling even lighter in your hand. The magnesium alloy body feels incredibly sturdy despite its weight, with sharp edges that feel a world apart from its plastic brothers; and it has a cool matte finish that doesn’t show up too many fingerprints. The metal keyboard is slim but very solid with no sign of bending at its centre or unwanted movement. The whole layout is also back-lit, something not usually seen in a laptop of this slender build, but personally I think back-lit keys are pretty much a must have. An ambient light sensor dictates when they come on and they also turn off when you haven’t touched the keyboard in a set time, something that helps push the battery life to around six hours. One of the few hardware keys on the top of the keyboard is a graphics chip selector, which helps you manage your power options further. The switch toggles between Stamina or Speed, basically switching between the

SONY S SERIES IES dedicated graphics card and weaker, but less power hungry, integrated Intel HD chipset. This is actually super handy for saving power and having a physical and software switch makes it that much easier for you to choose your power consumption. The line starts with the SB16FG, which is available in four different colours that cover it from tip to toe - even the DVD drive panel is finished in the same chosen tone and it’s this attention to detail that makes the S Series stand out from the crowded laptop space. The four colour choices are pink, blue, white and a dark silver that all really pop. Although it boasts a slim build, the Core i5 CPU and 4GB of RAM definitely keep this out of a netbook class, as does the ability to read and write to DVD or CD. Also very welcome is the standard USB 3.0 port - the latest for USB connections that will help keep this laptop future-proof. A HDMI and VGA port will get your screen easily on to a projector or second monitor and you can fit it out with up to 8GIG of RAM and take the 320GB HDD up further, but that is plenty of space for what you’d be using this system for. Another feature found on the latest VAIO laptops is a separate web only boot up. If your laptop is off, instead of hitting the power button you can hit the dedicated Web button which will boot the computer up in to a web browser environment in seconds. It’s a really cool feature, and would definitely come in handy when you just want to quickly check Facebook or Google something without having to boot up Windows. If you are currently in Windows, the Web button will open up your default browser. Flanking the Web button are the Assist and VAIO keys. The Assist button opens up a VAIO specific suite of programs designed to scan your hardware for faults, assist in

defragging or other nerd related activities. The VAIO key is more interesting and launches a type of media explorer that collates all of your media and lets you interact with it in a full screen environment. It does the usual media centre type things, but also has a few intelligent features, such as suggesting web-based video or information on the current artist you are listening to. Going up in the models you lose a choice in colour, with the SB17, 18 and 19GG only available in black. But it’s a bad ass black and definitely suits the more powerful innards, making this a more business orientated machine. At the most extreme end of the spectrum you can get a murdered-out SB19 that packs a powerful Core i7, 1GB dedicated graphics card and a solid-state drive - which is smaller in capacity but is definitely speedier than a traditional hard drive. With Sony’s quick boot system, the SSD model boots up from a hard reset in under 15 seconds, and about twice as long for the standard HDD. It still feels quicker than most laptops and something more expected with a full desktop booting up. All models feature a port for connecting to the optional dock, which is not always standard but always welcome. Also available are a couple of different custom fit carry pouches, the most expensive being an all leather affair that looks all the $179 it costs. The S Series is definitely my premium Windows laptop of choice - with looks that will punch you out and the power to finish you off. The whole range of S Series can be found at the three local Sony Centres and start at $1399.

Meet the emerging designers who are set to take the WA fashion industry by storm… Kimberley Pace|Edith Cowan University With immaculate construction skills and a refined, minimalist aesthetic that she calls “sterile, precise and repetitious”, Edith Cowan University’s Kimberley Pace has a very bright future ahead of her in the realms of fashion and visual arts. Though she couldn’t sew to save her life when she began her course, Pace has since mastered the art, creating garments that are tailored to perfection. “Fashion was never something I set out to do,” she says candidly. “I kind of fell into it at the beginning of my visual arts course after hearing a friend tell me how much she loved the fashion course at ECU.

32

“The course at ECU is more art based. It as great to be able to realise conceptual ideas into garments. There was a lot of room to be able to work independently and a lot of support to help you realise your ideas.” Finding inspiration from society and the built world, Pace’s graduating collection investigates “military, human anatomy and the uniform.” When asked what sets her designs apart from the work of other designers, Pace reveals that there’s more to her creations than meets the eye. “I guess the intricate layered nature of my designs [sets them apart],” she muses. “The internal aspects of the garments are just as important as the external. This means there are elements of the garments that are only experienced by the wearer.”

Angela Bollam|Curtin University

A couple of days after graduating from Curtin University, Angela Bollam put her sewing machine aside, packed her bags and headed north for a Canadian adventure. Five months later and Bollam is still back-packing across the land of the Maple Leaf, but she plans to return home soon to begin work on a swimwear label. “I am very eager to get a swimwear label up and running after I’m done travelling. I plan on experiencing as much of the world as possible to help inspire me when designing. If I get too addicted to travelling though there’s always the option of becoming a gypsy and designing psychedelic skirts for a living. Either way I’ll be happy!” Pushing the boundaries of traditional swimwear with her graduate collection, Bollam set out to create a body of work that reminded fashion aficionados that swimwear needn’t be as simple as a

34

skimpy triangle bikini. “In the broadest sense I have a real interest in swimwear and the whole beach culture. In saying that I notice things about this culture that I would like to change – swimwear is so minimalist, sexualized, even degrading at times. The central aim of my collection is to challenge what people perceive to be the stereotypical norms of modern swimwear. This includes shape shifting and warping the silhouette with both futuristic and vintage influences to create a completely new swimwear aesthetic. “My theory is that if you have confidence in your ability to create unique designs people will naturally be drawn to them. I’m just doing what I love and hope that people will worship my designs as the Michelangelo masterpieces of the swimwear world.”

Lisa Marjanovich|Central Institute

35

Armed with a knack for creating beautiful textiles that act as the basis for elegant yet contemporary garments, Central Institute graduate Lisa Marjanovich is chomping at the bit to share her creations with the world. “I am hoping to launch my label this year,” the emerging designer tells X-Press Fashion. “I think I am ready to showcase my designs to commercial standards.” Attention to detail is at the forefront of Marjanovich’s practice, which utilises various fabric manipulation techniques to create unique garments.

“I love the aspect of layering different weights of fabric or shades of colour into a body of work, so when in motion it reveals the body’s contours, giving that sensual appeal and the transparent tonal layers that are discretely hidden,” Marjanovich says of her designs. “[For my graduate collection] I worked with a technique called ‘smocking’ which required large amounts of hand stitching and detailing on each garment. This effect gave a beautiful representation of soft, rippling sand dunes once applied. It fit perfectly with my overall concept. I used pure blends of silks throughout my whole collection and hand dyed each colour to create my own earthy rustic tones.”

Celene Bridge|Curtin University

Renowned for her macabre creations that blur the lines between costume and fashion, Curtin University graduate Celene Bridge has been flat-tack since wrapping up her studies last year. In addition to showcasing her wares at the 2010 Perth Fashion Festival’s Student Runway event, Bridge was invited to present her collection at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival’s National Graduate Showcase, and she’s currently knee deep in fabric working on a new collection that will be on show at this year’s PFF. Though she obviously has the creative vision and initiative needed to start a label of her own, Bridge isn’t quite ready to launch a business just yet.

36

“I haven’t thought that far ahead! I’ll set up a label one day when I get my act together. The business side of things scare me. For now I’ll just keep on making collections ’til I run out of money. “I love fine details, texture, interesting fabrics, and leading the viewer’s eye over every aspect in the design,” Bridge says of her design aesthetic, which is evident in her outstanding graduate collection. “I was inspired by the idea of a menagerie of second skins, and adapting animals’ mechanisms of natural protection onto the human form. It was also inspired by femme fatales and chorus girls.”

Rebecca de Sousa|Challenger Institute

Utilising a bold, eye-catching colour palette, Rebecca de Sousa’s graduate collection was inspired by opposites, contrasting elegant draping with rigid, structural design. “I took inspiration from the internal framework of a building and brought that to the forefront of my collection,” de Sousa says of the core idea behind her collection. “I took a risk with colour; I tried to choose a colour theme that was bold and distinctive. I really pushed myself to create to the best of my ability.” Though she admits that her studies weren’t easy, de Sousa thoroughly enjoyed her course at Challenger Institute, where she learnt techniques that will help her eventually establish a label, which she plans to name Do Mar, the Portugese word for ocean. “Growing up in Portugal, both my parents had the ocean practically in their backyards, and growing up I’ve always been close to the water, so I think it’s fitting.

38

“The course was a lot of hard work, but so rewarding in the end. Having great creative people around you and amazing lecturers who are always willing to help out made such a difference to the overall experience.” Not content to launch Do Mar just yet, de Sousa plans to travel the world in the coming years, including a stop off in one of the world’s most iconic cities for fashion – Paris. “I still feel like I have so much more to learn before I can have a successful fashion label or business. I plan to travel to Paris next year and study at the Paris American Fashion Institute for the summer short course program. I then plan to make my way to New York to intern, hopefully for a fashion house or magazine. Ideally I also would like to study a small business course; I think it’s really important to have a clear understanding of how to run a business before I can consider having a fashion label.”

Jonté Pike|WA Institute Of Fashion & Textiles

Inspired by a trip to Turkey, and in particular the bustling Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Jonté Pike’s graduate collection has a distinctly international feel. “The vibrant colours and aroma from the spice bazaars captured my attention as well as the thousands of strands of semiprecious stones,” Pike says of her eye-opening experience abroad. “My eyes were drawn to one particular strand of stones which resembled the marbled vibrancy of the various spices. I immediately knew this was the inspiration for my graduating collection. “My designs usually embody a cultural feel yet are still commercial with a stylistic edge. Originally South African born, much of my work has this influence, giving a close eye to hand qualities such as beading and textiles. I am known to work with leather, silk and beading.”

Since finishing her studies, Pike has continued to travel the globe; visiting Japan in March to present her designs at the Nishiwaki Textile Festival, an initiative of the Western Australian Hyogo Banshu Textile program. “I worked closely with the Banshu textile designers and currently have my personally designed fabric being produced in Nishiwaki, which will be showcased with a collection at this year’s Perth Fashion Festival.” Once Pike has finished working on her collection for PFF, she plans to begin laying the foundations for a self titled label. “I am intending to launch my label this year. Hopefully there will be a good response to my designs through online stores as well as stock within some Perth boutiques. The label will focus on a good fit with a design flare in quality fabrics, whilst maintaining an affordable price.”
