If you’re hankering for a fix of Indonesian metal, and let’s face it, who isn’t, then you’ll be happy to know that West Javanese metal titans Burgerkill are heading to WA for a string of dates. Since their inception in 1995 Burgerkill have become veterans of the underground and hardcore metal community in Indonesia, composed movie soundtracks and even produced their own autobiographic novel. The band wowed Australian audiences at their appearances at last year’s Soundwave festival.

The Invasion Of Noise tour will see the band playing tracks from their latest album Beyond Coma And Despair at The Charles Hotel on Friday, January 29, with support from Claim The Throne, Arkarion, and Mhorgl; HQ Skatepark in Leederville as part of the Children Of Horns allages mini festival on Saturday, January 30; and as part of the Big Day Out on Saturday, January 31.

A NIGHT AT THE BALLET

The lads from Spandau Ballet are reforming for fans, with plans to tour the globe sharing their hits with audiences in Australia and overseas. With 25 million record sales under their belts, Spandau Ballet are the kings of ’80s new romantic pop, which they will prove to audiences when they take to the stage at Sandalford Winery in Caversham on Saturday, April 17. With news that the Sydney leg of the Future Music Festival is already sold out, the second announcement of acts for the Perth Future Music Festival should see the Perth event also well on its way to being a sell out.

Joining the already stellar lineup, which features the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Booka Shade, Empire of The Sun, The Prodigy and more, will be UK Progressive duo Way Out West, as well as Spank Rock, Sydney’s Bag Raiders, indie quintet Operator Please, hip hop/ soul outfit Space Invadas, and LA’s latest audio riot Jump Jump Dance Dance (featuring Groove Terminator and Christ Carter).

In the spirit of the great folk revival tours, Californian troubadour Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Frank Turner, Tim Barry (Avail) and Ben Nichols (Lucero) are embarking on a far-reaching Australia tour which will see them collaborating in each others sets at each show.

Ideas man Chuck Ragan decided that he’d like to try the old fashion revue style show after getting home from tours and finding he’d know his tour-mates songs. Reversing this scenario, Ragan and his touring mates decided they’d get together and rehearse before going on tour so that they could share their nifty new collaborations with the audience.

EIGHTEEN POLYPHONIC TONES

Bringing 18 of his all-singing disciples to Perth on Friday, February 26, Tim DeLaughter and his Polyphonic Spree are set to delight as part of the SoCo Carnivale Tour.

FLAGGING AN ISSUE Dear X-Press, The Keep Australia Beautiful Council must look forward to Australia Day each and every year, based on the amount of flags found littered all over the freeways, roads and everywhere else shortly after the event. Indeed, even well before the event.

The patriotic Aussies who display their items (normally at least two per car) should at least have the courtesy, if the flags come loose from their vehicles, to recover them and ‘clean up’ their own mess so to speak (they are patriotic, it seems, only until they lose them).

Last year I personally would have picked up about 100 flags in total and fed them to the Salvation Army bins. At least they are happy.

with Tuesday night not dropping below 30C for most of the night, making it the hottest Januar y night in two decades.

As these untiring high mercury levels continue, there seems little else to do but close the blinds and position oneself bang in front of the airconditioner and television, only moving to pull up a pillow to sleep the night with the aircon on full ball.

But while those vents from airconditioner heaven provide sweet relief for us, the state’s power supply teeters threateningly high, so much so that on Tuesday the 19 th , hundreds of homes a c ro s s Pe r t h we re b l a c k e d o u t a s t h e network struggled to cope with demand.

Being comfortable doesn’t have to mean being a power guzzler. Here’s some ideas that might help lessen the strain on our power stations. Firstly, your home doesn’t need to feel arctic: it simply needs to be a comfortable living space: set the temperature on your air conditioning between 24-26°C – every degree you reduce this by will increase consumption by 10%.

While you’re at home, close the doors and vents in unused rooms: you only need to cool the living space you’re actually using. And take advantage of the aircon’s programmable timing: there’s no need to have it roaring while you’re out of the house, but you could set it to start twenty minutes before you come home - likewise for it to turn off an hour after you drift off into sleep.

I was disappointed to read about the Cat Power gig in last week’s X-Press (#1196), minus a support act review. As a new band starting out, Selk & The Bonesingers would have relished the exposure that the review could have brought.

There may have been extenuating circumstances that rendered the music reviewer unable to make it down to the Astor by 8.30pm to review the support act - I cannot comment. However, a West Australian music ‘journalist’, writing for a West Australian music press, that supposedly supports West Australian music, should not be assigned the task if they aren’t available for the whole show.

Reallocate the gig if there’s a problem – I’m sure there’s no shortage of media students desperate for the work.

As many of the contributors at X-Press are members of local bands themselves (either past or present), I would have thought my views were mirrored by your staff and that there was a strong ethic within the team to continue to champion local music. I stand corrected.

Country fans should brand February 18-21 into their calendars for the annual Boyup Brooke Country Music Festival And Awards. Celebrating its 25th year, the festival will include a bush poet’s breakfast, ute and truck muster and a gala awards evening.

Since its inception in 1986 the festival has grown from a one day event attended by 600 people into a four day country feast attended by 17,000 happy cowboys and cowgirls.

Irish folk sensation Brian Kennedy will bring his dulcet tones to the Fly By Night Musicians Club on Tuesday, March 23.

The critically-lauded singer songwriter sails into WA as part of his national tour which will see him performing songs from his latest, and tenth, album Interpretations. On the album Kennedy reinterprets and folk-ifies a number of chart classics such as Brown Eyed Girl and You Are So Beautiful.

Kennedy was first discovered by fellow Irishman Van Morisson who invited the singer to join his Blues And Soul world tour for a six year period. Since his big break, Kennedy has gone on to release ten albums, write two novels, publish short stories and even present radio and TV shows. This year’s Perth International Beer Festival will take place across the weekend of February 20-21, at the Supreme Court Gardens. As well as a huge array of beers to sample there will be family entertainment, a free play area for the kids, a bucking bull, market stalls and displays.

The main music stage will feature Labjacd, Seth Sentry, GTA, Howie Morgan Project, and Sambalicious (Saturday); and Sugar Army, Nathan Gaunt And The Sunset Riders, Vdelli, Rusty Pinto Combo, and Sabroson (Sunday), ensuring beer connoisseurs are kept entertained on the unlikely chance that they get sick of the beer. DEAD SET

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is inviting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to get on stage and give stand-up a burl in Deadly Funny. During January, February and March, comedians will head out to ATSI communities to hold free workshops to show would-be comedians the ropes, with heats then held to determine who will go through to the Grand Final in Melbourne on Saturday, April 10.

Members of Perth’s rock fraternity are banding together for a special gig at The Civic Hotel, Inglewood, on Saturday, February 6, to raise money for victims of the Toodyay bushfires.

Gasoline Inc, Baby Jane, Blackwater Station and The Bronze will appear at the benefit night which has been put together by Bella Stivey of Rock House Sound, Trashpictures and AV photography.

Audience members will be in the running to receive a stack of prizes and giveaways including an autographed Stratocaster donated by The Rock Inn, Mt Lawley. All funds raised on the night go towards the Toodyay community, With great local music and prizes on offer, and the opportunity to help rebuilt this hard-hit town, everyone’s a winner. The Too Solid Music Festival will bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists together in cultural and musical celebration this Australia Day at the Supreme Court Gardens from midday to 7.30pm. Entry to the event is free.

While the fireworks may make the loudest bang on Australia Day, a brand new Indigenous music festival set to take place in the Supreme Court Gardens which will remind all Australians of our country’s rich Indigenous culture and history.

Jointly organised by Aboriginal music college Abmusic and local Indigenous broadcaster 100.9fm Noongar Radio, the event will include traditional ceremonies as well as performances

by Indigenous and non-Indigenous acts such as Downsyde, The Yabu Band, Moana Dreaming, and Blue Shaddy.

Festival coordinator Jade Masters has a particularly strong connection with the event given that he is also the drummer for WAMi Awardwinning Indigenous act The Yabu Band. When not providing driving pop, reggae and traditional rhythms for his Yabu Band co-members Boyd and Delson (Jnr) Stokes, Masters is also the project officer for Abmusic.

The Too Solid Music Festival will follow on from last year’s inaugural Too Solid Music Awards, an award ceremony run by WAM and the Aboriginal Alcohol And Drug Service which aims to recognise outstanding achievement by Indigenous artists.With an Australian Arts Council grant recently approved for the development of a proposed Too Solid Indigenous record label, it seems the future for Indigenous music in WA has never been brighter.

BY DAVID CRADDOCK For many aboriginal people I imagine, Australia Day would be a sombre day - was it a deliberate decision to choose this day for the Too Solid Music Festival as a way to promote reconciliation?

In all honesty there’s no choice in the day. Each year the City Of Perth puts out the tender for a concert and the event is always held at Supreme Court Gardens. In years gone by it’s been called the Survival Concert. In the last couple of years I think it’s had a different name, but Indigenous people call Australia Day‘Survival Day’.

It’s not a celebration of their thing, the country I guess was invaded to them, and so they’ve always thought of it as a day when they’ve survived.What I’m trying to do is say that black fellas are too solid, they’re wicked, they’re amazing in what they do so let’s celebrate the day in a positive light. We’ve tried to make it non-Indigenous as well. We’ve got Downsyde and Blue Shaddy playing so that’s a first in the history of all the Indigenous concerts was an amazing turn out, nothing went down that have happened on that day. and it was great. So whose idea was the festival?

strong statement about the different kinds of Australian identity. How did your version come about?

That song certainly wins over the nonIndigenous audience. Delson [Stokes], the lead singer, his grandmother translated it. He can do all sorts of language stuff, he does Waltzing Matilda in-language and he can probably do the national anthem, I’m not too sure. He sung it to me one day and we were all like, ‘gee that has to go on the album’. We won’t know until the day but it’s also in the running to be played on the 94.5 Skyworks soundtrack – so fingers crossed. I know they’ve been looking at it pretty closely.

in 2002, it was at the last Stompem Ground Festival and he was playing drums left-handed, playing a right-handed drum kit, blind and playing reggae!

Being a drummer myself I was just like, ‘woah, that’s incredible’.

I think anything with an invention that hasn’t been done before is going to be quite big.

I think you’ll find, and my understanding of the Indigenous music industry, is that there hasn’t been too many Indigenous acoustic albums done – especially the way he’s done it.You’ve got Archie Roach and things like that, but with Gurrumul, I think Australia and the world has been waiting for something like that.

The band sing some songs in the Stokes brother’s Indigenous language, Wongatha.

Are songs like Gundulla, where you swap between Wongatha and English, a good way of spreading a traditional language to younger Indigenous people?

Wongatha is a Goldfields language.

There’re several languages out there and Wongatha is one of them. Yabu actually means ‘rock’ and ‘gold’ – it has two meanings. I think the great thing about songs like that is that whoever is listening to it, be they Indigenous or nonIndigenous, you get an immediate understanding of what they’re saying… it teaches Indigenous youth as well as the white man if they want to learn the language. It’s a pretty simple song to sing along to. It’s based around four or five Indigenous words and that’s it.

There’s also a big reggae influence in your music on songs like on ‘E Right, ‘E Not Wrong isn’t there?

We’re all huge reggae fans. Bob Marley is of course a big influence, and UB40. I’m also a big Police fan myself, though that’s a very different kind of reggae. Delson and Boyd, they have a country background. There’s not really much country on the album but there is a hint of it every now and again. They love Freddy Fender and all that kind of stuff. They’re big country fans.

Did you have musical role models growing up as a kid or were they more sporting?

I’m a massive football fan so I used to look up to people like Peter Matera, Michael Long and Cathy Freeman – obviously she doesn’t play football – but sporting role models were a big thing for me. Obviously Yothu Yindi, Coloured Stone and a band called Footprints, I think they were called, back in the day. I’m a huge fan of Gurrumul – even though he’s a recent success, I think he’s amazing.

He’s taken the world by storm hasn’t he?

That must be inspiring for the band to see how huge an artist like Gurrumul can be on a global scale.

Definitely. My philosophy is that you can’t turn your back on something that is good. It doesn’t matter what it is in the world, if something’s good eventually it will come through and shine. It might take a while to break through, but when it does, it can go the distance. Gurrumul is a perfect example of that. I remember seeing Gurrumul with Saltwater Band, his original band

How did you come to meet Delson and Boyd and eventually join the band?

I met them at Abmusic in 2001.We were all studying here and about a week later I started playing in the band. I played drums in the band for six years or whatever and then the last couple of years I’ve decided to get into the management side of things.

The brothers are from Kalgoorlie but you’re from Northam aren’t you?

Yeah I’m from Northam but my ancestor people come from a place in Queensland called Kooma. Over here we have Noongar and Wongatha and all that, but over there my ancestor people are called Murri.

2009 was a huge year for The Yabu Band with you winning Indigenous Act Of The Year at the WAMi Awards and the Deadly Award for Most Promising New Talent. Where to from here?

From here we’ve got the Nannup Music Festival later this year, we’ve got a gig in Canberra on St Patrick’s Day – I think they fly about 500 multicultural people from around the world into Canberra and we play at the National Museum there. Then we do a Country Arts tour; we do a run from Esperance to Kununurra.

I’m not too sure what’s after that, but it’s all a little busy at this stage.

AFI Love Is All You Need Crash Love, the follow-up to AFI’s 2006 platinum release Decemberunderground, sees the Californian rockers taking a walk down a more involved path, according to guitarist Jade Puget. JESSICA WILLOUGHBY reports ahead of the band’s performance at Soundwave on March 1.

It is a fact that people source inspiration from all aspects of life. Some rejoice in the elegant charm of the world around them, whereas others think natural beauty is for, well, wankers.

These types of individuals savour the ideas that sprout from more sinister origins,an inspiration that forms from negativity, if you will.

Examples? When the weather is shitty, that is fodder for verse. Or if mankind is not living up to your expectations, that is the muse for song. But if you have to watch a bunch of Z-grade celebrities bathing in their own swill of chlorine and fake tanning balms every single day, for weeks on end, from your Sunset Boulevard hotel room in Los Angeles, now that is enough juice for a whole goddamn album. That is if you are Californian greats AFI. Enter Crash Love. Released on September 25 last year, the eighth studio album from these somewhat genre-defying visionaries embraces this paradox and makes it shine the only way this quartet know how – through musical chemistry and abstract lyrical introspection. But let us rewind a little bit here. Why on earth were the duo of vocalist Davey Havok and Jade Puget spending their time writing the much-awaited follow-up to Decemberunderground (2006) in

some swanky establishment on the famous ‘city of angels’ strip in the first place?

“Well unfortunately Davey and I don’t live in the same place anymore,” guitarist Jade Puget croons down the line from his hotel room in Amsterdam. “It kinda sucks, but I really wanted to move to LA, so I did it. Davey still lives in the Bay Area.The writing process took a bit longer because of this, about a year in total. So every few weeks he’d fly out to me and we’d get this hotel room overlooking Sunset Boulevard and a pool full of celebrity douchebags. It really offered us a sense of negative inspiration (laughs).”

Negative inspiration indeed. The impact of their writing atmosphere shamelessly influenced the content for the album, in other words. From the title, to the artwork and more importantly, the lyrical persona developed on the album, all identify with the band’s outlook of the nature of celebrity culture. A deeply cynical take, as expected.

“The title Crash Love says it all,” Puget states matter-of-factly.“It is a two-word pop culture commentary, a reference to the emptiness and hollowness of celebrity culture. But we wanted to prove people wrong about the stereotype they have created for AFI a little bit.People would expect an AFI album title to be something like ‘…Black Dark Something Something…’, so we damn well put love in the title. Not just in the metaphorical sense, but the actual word love. It’s all about the heart in AFI (laughs).”

To mirror Puget’s comments, it is all about the love for AFI. Group love, though let us not get dirty here. Puget and Havok have always been known to be the main songwriters in the band, but the eighth instalment signals a shift from the norm for this crew.

“On Decemberunderground, I would demo all the instrumentals bits, then Davey would do the vocals and Hunter [Burgan, bass] and Adam [Carson, guitar] would kinda get a finished song to learn. We didn’t want to do that this time around.

Davey and I still wrote the songs, but then we jammed them out as a band. It produced a more organic feel to the album and Hunter and Adam also know how to play the songs a lot better than normal because they had input.”

And the band were not the only ones to benefit from this ‘sharing the love’ ethos. During the recording of this release, the members of AFI were joined at Conway Studios in LA by the winners of the band’s Begin Transmission contest.

To give you a bit of a rundown, the contest asked fans from all over the world to enter video submissions containing a demonstration of their singing abilities and little bit about themselves in general. Six entrants were then chosen to contribute backing vocals to the tracks I Am Trying Very Hard To Be Hard and Medicate.

“Originally we wanted to do a film about us recording an album,” Puget explains.“But then we realised that everyone else does that. So we decided to focus on the fans. Everyone knows enough about us now, we wanted to get to know the fans more. We got about 1,000 submissions to the contest and we went through and personally watched every one of them. There were a lot of funny, creative and heartfelt submissions. I have to say it was pretty touching to get these people pouring their hearts out to us. Eventually we bit the bullet and cut it down to six people. They were pretty nervous when they first came into the studio, especially because some of them had never sung in public before, but they got comfortable pretty quickly.”

Admittedly, now celebrities in their own right, with their last album entering at #1 on the US charts, will AFI ever become a testament to their own anti-doctrine? “(Laughs) If that ever happens, I am giving you permission to slap me,” Puget says.

CAMERA OBSCURA Maudlin Musicians

Glaswegian accents are hard to understand even at the best of times; so when you add to that a bad international telephone line and a singer with a sore throat, you have a heavily obscured interview with Camera Obscura’s Tracyanne Campbell. EMMA BERGMEIER does her best to hear through the static, ahead of the band’s gig at Amplifier Bar on Monday, January 25.

Through the anarchic buzz of the bad telephone line comes Trac yanne Campbell’s sweet but strained voice, “I have a bit of a cold, we’ve all got colds a c t u a l l y, i t ’s ve r y s t ra n g e, ” s h e s ays between coughs. “ We c a m e b a c k f r o m t o u r i n g then we had to go down to Denmark for a radio session and when we woke up in the morning we all had colds. My voice isn’t doing very well.”

When we speak in the days before Christmas, Campbell is on a rare break from touring, which she says has been the main focus of her life this past year.

“The past few years we haven’t had much of a chance to be at home so I did most of the writing for My Maudlin Career while we were on tour.

“For the most part we enjoy the touring process; I think it’s a strange way to live your life. You have to get a balance of touring and being at home because when you’re just touring, it’s very hard. This year we’ve been really busy, we’ve practically been touring since March. When we stopped last week we were ready to stop, we couldn’t take much more. It is difficult but there are aspects of it that are amazing and we’re very fortunate to travel and see things most people will never see in their lives, even if it is from the window of a bus!”

Being on the road so much has meant that Campbell and her band mates have had to master their writing-while-ontour skills, and the quality of My Maudlin Career is testament to their dexterity in this field.

Camera Obscura

“The past few years, we haven’t had much of a chance to be at home so I did most of the writing while we were on tour.

I’ll write the basic idea for the song then when we come home I’ll bring them to the rehearsal space.

“You can’t really separate your life between being in a band and being at home because it’s all the same, it’s all merged.

Eventually, your life becomes the band and the band is your life because everything’s built around it. If we were a band selling a million records then we might have more control over how we spend our time but these days, it’s pretty normal for a band to be touring all the time.”

With a back catalogue including songs such as I Don’t Do Crowds, Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken and I Need All The Friends I Can Get, it ’s fairly obvious that Campbell is a shy creature well versed in the art of self deprecating, but all the same, the title My Maudlin Career seems to be selling her skills a bit short.

“I was questioning what I do for a living to a certain extent,” explains a hoarse Campbell. “Writing songs that sometimes come from a dark place, trying to make a living making music, which is very difficult to do these days. It’s also a play on words because ‘maudlin’ sounds like ‘modeling’, and modeling is something a lot of people would think of as a glamorous job, like being in a band, so it’s me questioning that.”

In addition to exploring concerns about life as a touring musician, My Maudlin Career addresses matters of the heart, was due to a par ticularly difficult break-up Campbell was going through while writing this album.

“My Maudlin Career is mainly about one relationship that I had and it was a big thing for me. There were lots of emotions that I’d never experienced before and it ticked over in my brain for a while. The record is about me dealing and coping with the end of a relationship.

“Different people write different songs in different ways for different reasons, I don’t know if I’ve abused my songwriting, but it’s certainly been useful to get through stuff. It’s quite an emotional thing making a record, and the songs become fairly personal and you feel by getting them out there, it’s such a release.”

TIM ROGERS On Yer Bike

Tim Rogers return to Perth this week on his Luxury Of Hysteria tour (see Tour Trails for dates). BOB GORDON catches up.

Tim Rogers is something of the eternal troubadour, the next show is never that far away, and he is often en route to getting there.

It makes for some exhaustive times but also means that there’s plenty of time to consider it all as well…

“Well last night at 4am my thoughts were all, ‘I’ll never let a child of mine follow in these footsteps’, he says on his way to a gig in Geelong. “But then on the drive today, meeting all these people along the way, and I think I’m pretty lucky, really.

“It fluctuates for sure, sometimes you feel like stabbing yourself in the eyeballs rather than jumping in the car and going to another show!”

Co m e s h o w t i m e, h o w e ve r, t h e knives have gone and the commitment to the gig always shines through, certainly in Rogers’ case. At this moment he has a theatre project ahead for 2010, a new You Am I album and another album with some of his collaborators from The Temperance Union Days. With so much ahead (and behind) his current shows are a melange of what’s on his

mind and what might soon be.

“The shows I’m doing now are quite unfocused,” he says. “At times I find charm in doing that, other times not and I wish I could be more focused. Maybe it’s the way I started playing where if you take yourself too seriously it’s a cardinal sin. I mean, I take the music seriously, but myself not always that seriously.”

S t i l l , i n te r m s o f p e r fo r m a n ce, Rogers is never someone who’s merely rested on his laurels…

“Well I just don’t feel like there’s been enough of a blanket crocheted,” he laughs. “Or that’s there’s one that I could be spread out on, at all. It comes from years of playing to Australian audiences, and certainly in terms of anything I do, there’s always this kind of legacy of ‘let’s get fucked up’. The only people you hear are those who are loudest and probably not interested in what you’re actually doing. There’s not enough time, when you’re growing up playing in pubs, you’re just trying to not get hit by the next bottle really. It’s not often that the songs get treated with any reverence, they may

go somewhere but it’s not as though I’m ever treated with some Godly presence, it’s something else.”

T h e n e x t Yo u A m I a l b u m h a s been talked of among fans for much of the last year and from the sound of it, the talk continues amongst the band itself. “ The You Am I album’s already been through about three or four different genres, dictates and floorplans. It’s gone from a psychedelic masterpiece to a hardcore blitzkrieg. And we’ve got some shows coming up so we’re right in the middle of that process as well, which will fuck it up further (laughs). It’s interesting. We talk about it a lot, you know? We’ve just got to play the fucker.”

At various stages a guest-vocalist album has been mooted for the band, and Rogers says that idea is still hovering around.

However it’s also a matter of the band being in the same place, let alone outside folks.

“It’s a case of chaotically trying to make some sense of it, we can talk for three days straight and not resolve anything. Then Davey (Lane, guitar) has to go over to LA to play a show. We’d planned on going there together to get a head start on it but we got busy. Someone needs a manager (laughs).”

It seems true that the members of You Am I have all been troubadours together, but they do it now apart as well.

“Yeah there have been occasions where we’ve met at airports like lovers or something,” Rogers says. “I used to often meet up with my dad in airports as well… I should get a room, really (laughs). What we should do is just move in, we’d be perfect housemates… one of us would be out all the time.

“I’m hoping that on the flight over to Perth I’ll get a plan together. I’m meeting up with my musical partner Mel (Robinson, cellist) over there, there’s a lot of work to do. It’s kind of chaos at the moment but I’m hoping to get things in place. I think possibly that working and driving around the place to shows is good for that. Being in a moving vehicle, having somewhere to go, driving is good for that. Even on the rare occasions when I’m at home, it’s not long before I’m out on my bike and out riding suburbs away.

I find it very hard to sit still.”

Oh, pushbike or motorcycle? “ O h p u s h b i k e , i t ’s t h e m o s t admirable form of transpor t, even more than aeroplane or Icarus. You know I always make sure that here’s a bottle of Beaujolais, a bouquet of flowers and a baguette in my basket. The lycra mob give me crap about my basket but I get to keep Beaujolais in it so I don’t give a fuck. And it’s not just to me, but to anyone. I like people who dress optimistically.

“This morning I was a little worse for wear and tear and I saw a girl in a record shop in a very pretty floral dress. I wanted to tell her that she’d made me feel optimistic about the day, but it would have seemed creepy of me. It made me want to leap at the day and that’s what I do – I play shows or I ride my bike. Anything could happen. And it’s why people play shows, because tonight could be the greatest night, you never know.

And you give yourself every opportunity of that by singing songs about pain and misery (laughs).”

A world of exciting possibilities awaits.

It’s all about the little things: designating a ‘side one’ and ‘side two’ for your CD on the artwork is totally and utterly pointless, but the mentality is easily understood – ‘that’s how they did it back when people did things properly, so that’s how we’re gonna do it now’.

And there’s a fair bit of that postBeatles attitude at work here. Pleasant melodies combined with sound-scaping,a touch of collage, and instrumental experimentations that never run too far away from the basic three-guitarsand-drums paradigm. All lush production and pleasantries; but don’t forget to designate who did what.

At the end of the day though, what separates bands like these guys from the true pantheon of guitar pop musicians is the ability to write memorable songs. While the title track of this EP is quite an enjoyable stoned saunter with hint of The Dandy Warhols or early Blur, the ability for the vocal melody to truly stick in one’s skull is questionable; and the other four tracks continue in much the same way.

Knox most notably fronted the Tall Dwarfs and had numerous solo records, but he played a part in many other outfits. Stroke: Songs For Chris Knox gathers well over 30 artists who pay tribute to Knox by reinterpreting his songs.

This double-CD collects a bucket load of heavy hitters to show the sphere of Knox’s influence. Fellow lo-fi luminaries The Mountain Goats, Lou Barlow and Bill Callahan put in typically understated efforts while AC Newman holds nothing back to bring out the melody in I Don’t Know Much About Life But I Know How To Breathe.

Boh Runga is given the task of tackling what is possibly Knox’s biggest hit – Not Given Lightly. The sultry female vocal equips the tune with more bedroom moves than it’s original.

Stephen Merritt embraces the DIY spirit with Beauty, and Portastatic pull out some tidy riffery for Nostalgias No Excuse. Even Jay Reatard found time to lay down a rousing rendition of Pull Down The Shades, and with his untimely death last week, it may be one of his last recorded efforts.

There are too many artists to mention, but not only does Stroke do the legacy of Chris Knox plenty of justice, hopefully proceeds will put some sizeable dollars in the coffers towards his rehabilitation. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

For many, Lyle Lovett will always be known as the former Mr Julia Roberts, but the narrow-faced singer is a veritable superstar in his own right. He may have dabbled in blues, swing, jazz and folk, but the four-time Gammy Award-winner has his Stetson boot firmly in the country camp.

Natural Forces was recorded with Lovett’s ‘Large Band’, yet many of the arrangements are delicate and place the singersongwriter firmly in the spotlight. Half of the album is Lovett originals and share his sense of playfulness and wit. Pantry makes the less-thansubtle connection between food and sex when he asks his lover to ‘keep it in the pantry’ whilst he is away. It’s a little hokey but the melody just won’t leave your head.

Natural Forces is at its most compelling is when the Texan turns his hand to the songs of others. His take on Eric Taylor’s Whooping Crane is exquisite, as is the lithe wander through Townes van Zandt’s Loretta.

With a plethora of country artists doing the rounds these days, Lovett is not as unique a voice as he once was, but on Natural Forces he still does it as well as most. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

VAMPIRE WEEKEND Contra XL Recordings Inertia Indie darlings Vampire Weekend burst onto the scene in 2008 with their stellar, self-titled debut, and in 2010, the lads return with Contra, a fittingly fantastic second album. Much like their debut, Contra tells a tale of privileged American upbringings, yet manages to avoid pretension thanks to contagious melodies and Ezra Koenig’s effortless, laid-back vocals.

Kicking off with the delightfully sweet Horchata, Contra immediately feels like a soundtrack to summer (despite lyrical references to winter), with exotic instrumentation including marimbas, zabumba, harpsicord and shekere.

Sweet summer sounds continue through White Sky and Holiday, then California English picks up the pace, hitting a few sour notes due to overly zealous used AutoTune and racing percussion. High speed percussion also features on Cousins, detracting from the song’s pretty melody, demonstrating that the band’s strengths seem to lay in their slower, poppier numbers.

Highlights of the album include serenade to the sword, Giving Up The Gun, Diplomat’s Son, which discretely samples M.I.A’s Hussel, and title track I Think UR A Contra, which combines Koenig’s soaring vocal skills with lowfi instrumentation.

All in all, Contra is a great album, proving that not all bands succumb to second album syndrome. _EMMA BERGMEIER

One of the best and most popular punk/hardcore bands Perth has ever produced, Extortion – in spite of a revolving lineup – are one of the most reliable acts you can find. They stick to what they know, and they deliver the goods every time.

Loose Screws has a few interesting titbits on the periphery (it was recorded in several different countries / Barney Greenway guests on one of the songs etc) but the music does all the talking. Short, fast and attacking; Loose Screws is a sheer pummelling, as any Extortion fan would no doubt be hoping for.

Gen Y might not understand, but this is how hardcore sounds when it has a brain and a set of balls, rather than a template and a stylist… ie better.

THESE NEW PURITANS Hidden Dominoe/Angular EMI Given These New Puritans’ collaboration with Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane early in their career (they wrote backing for a runway show) it’d be easy to frivolously dismiss them as a ‘haircut’ band.

However, the two minutes of haunting, sparse and immaculately scored woodwind arrangement which opens this album puts any fears of fashion-world vacancy or plasticity rather swiftly put to bed.

These New Puritans are clearly not a band that likes to fumble around in the studio jamming out ideas. Never has the word ‘considered’ been more appropriate when describing this band’s manifesto-like approach to carefully melding disparate styles (think dancehall, post-punk, grime, hip hop, commercial pop, noise-rock) and then shaping the pastiche to be their own.

Seven-minute epic We Want War is a Greek tragedy in its twists, turns, mythical proclamations and grotesque asides, forming a fitting introduction to the band’s amorphous style. The kitchen sink is thrown in with tribal drums, synths, electronic samples, woodwind flourishes, rap-like delivery, industrial thumps and a children’s choir to boot, but like a Francis Bacon painting, take a few steps back and the harsh, tortured ugliness is all the more appealing. _DAVID CRADDOCK

ends on a high note with Grizelda, one of the few sincere tracks on what is otherwise a sneeringly ironic album.

Odd Blood is a disjointed beast of an album with some great highlights; it won’t be enough to parlay Yeasayer’s current fame into long-term success, but it promises enough to make their next album an exciting prospect, too. _CHAD PARKHILL

MIDLAKE The Courage Of Others Speak ‘N Spell Inertia

Midlake did themselves a solid in advance when they released second album The Trials Of Van Occupanther in 2006, with opening track Roscoe causing a fuss in indie-rock circles and ensuring that by the time they released another record, we’d still remember who they were.

It seems that most contemporary DELPHIC folk music passing through the indie sieve Acolyte comes from American bands tending towards Modular traditional Americana, all dust and tumbleweeds Universal and lap steel. THE SOFT PACK Extinction Pod Inertia San Diego based four-piece The Soft Pack were formerly known as The Muslims, but changed names (for whatever reason), and Extinction is a convenient gathering of all the material they’ve YEASAYER put to tape so far.

Odd Blood The music on offer takes the form of Mute/Spunk what is unfortunately fairly toothless garage EMI rock. All the ingredients are there; jangly guitars, You probably didn’t hear it here first, owing to loping bass lines, carelessly drawled vocals. Over summer the City Of Subiaco will present 12 weeks of free entertainment, including musical performances that encompass a range of genres.

On Sunday, January 24, grab a picnic, bundle the family into the car (or train/bus if you’re environmentally minded) and head along to see a performance by Zero to Hero, a percussion group with over 100 drums, who play carnival rhythms straight from Brazil. Catch Zero to Rio playing from 5.30pm ’til 7.30pm at Mueller Park in Subiaco.

The terrifying notion that was day-to-day life in Northern Ireland between the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90s referred to there as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Troublesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x201C; played out on our television screens and continue to do so in occasional documentary form. Though the pain and desperation is on screen, it is often anonymous or simply seems a long time ago. Five Minutes Of Heaven goes for the raw emotion of those affected directly.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1975, in Lugan, and we see a 17 year-old protestant, Alistair Little, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;manningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; up with a Smith & Wesson, about to meet his mates on a mission that will forever changes his life and certainly many others. They are about to murder a young catholic, Jim Griffin, and become respected men amongst their peers. Well, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the plan.

As they bungle along we see that they are indeed not war-hardened men, but spotty awkward teenagers pretending they are. Western Australia’s Octagon Theatre, it will be a showcase of 25 years of work and involvement in an art form that in recent history was completely unheard of in this part of Australia. Deanna Blacher, founder of the Danza Viva, the Spanish Dance academy, When Fuego Fuego 2010 – A Retrospective almost single handedly dragged the art form J o u r n e y ( h e n c e F u e g o F u e g o ) p l a y s from obscurity in Perth, and is rightfully out its two shows at the Universit y of proud of her achievements.

“Well I started, a bit more than 25 years ago when I came to Perth in 1983, and there was nothing here at all in the field. It was quite difficult. We really had to go to the eastern states to find Spanish Dance but we wanted to stay in Perth. I started from scratch at WAAPA about three weeks after we arrived. Kira Bousloff, the founder of the WA ballet, was teaching in a studio in West

Perth and she asked me to come along and give classes. That was the beginning of my school.”

Lest one mistakes this recital for the sort of dancing one finds in salsa classes in community halls all over the state, Blacher emphasises the intense physical discipline that is necessary for Spanish Classical Dance, a discipline not to be mistaken for Latin dance.

“Spanish dance is different in that it requires a lengthy technical training.

The classical Spanish dance is like classical ballet with castanets. There’s a huge Spanish orchestral repertoire using flamenco techniques, and of course there is flamenco itself.”

Their website, www.danzaviva. com, emphasises their commitment to correcting this misconception in clear terms.

“The company’s mission is to eliminate the ‘rose-in-the-teeth’ image that people have of Flamenco and to present to the public instead, a memorable theatrical experience of Flamenco and Spanish dance as an elevated and complete art form.”

This commitment to the art form is what drives many of the dancers, who, while performing as part of a professional company, rehearse in the evenings, after lengthy days working other jobs. “I encourage all my dancers to go to uni to do something else (other than dancing). Because you can’t make a living like this. I’ve got a company that’s full of doctors, lawyers, archaeologists, geologists, you name it we’ve got it.”

The situation is symptomatic of the government’s dwindling support for the art form. “When we started the first 10 years ago we had state and federal funding, but since then we’ve changed political parties and they’ve changed the guidelines, and all that fell away, but we’ve been able to keep going as a professional company.”

Perhaps a greater understanding and statement of the art form could go a long way toward creating an environment in which this performance discipline can thrive, and, to that end, Danza Viva hopes to dazzle and entertain when Fuego Fuego plays at the end of the month. _JOE LUI

I didn’t intend to “I grew up with old clothes so I’ve always be conspicuous but I just felt like me when loved them. When I was 15 I went into the I was wearing vintage.

I moved to Melbourne in 1998 and Good Samaritans on Murray Street and up on the wall they had this polka-dot, 1950s party I’ve been there since then; I opened Circa dress and I just fell in love with it. I felt very in 2005. When I finished my qualification in intimidated by it but I managed to buy it and costume in 1987 I moved to Sydney, and I it made me feel fabulous wearing it. From did a bit of work in theatre and then I got a then on there was no looking back – I started job at a vintage clothing shop in Sydney and hanging out at all the op-shops to look for all loved it. About six years ago I went to Sydney and the shop was closed down and at that the fabulous things I could find.

In the early ’80s when I was about point I was working as a software designer 16 or so, because I was very small, a size 6, for IBM and my job was getting outsourced modern clothes at that time were just far to India. When I saw that my vintage shop too big for me and when you’re small, you had closed down in Sydney, I rang up the don’t want to wear clothes that are too big, owner and said ‘do you want to sell it to me?’, it makes you feel like you have no shape. I and she did, so I shipped everything down soon discovered that you could buy vintage to Melbourne and opened Circa. to fashions from eras past, with plenty of tips about sourcing, restoring and prolonging the life of vintage garments. There’s a lot of misinformation out there in the vintage world and because vintage has become popular, there are a lot of people who’ve jumped on the band wagon and are selling things on Ebay or Etsy, and they misrepresent the garments.

They’ll say that something is a 1940s dress when it’s a 1980s dress because the eras go around and around. It frustrated me to see these things because I think it’s perfectly fine to have an ’80s doing the ’40s style dress but don’t pay a 1940s price tag for it!

The publisher for Carters contacted me, he came into my shop shortly after I opened and he looked around and he said ‘you’re not like the others, you’re serious’, and it was one of the best things anyone had ever said to me. He said ‘do you want to write a book?’ because he wanted to publish a book on vintage and he was looking for someone to write it. At first I just didn’t have the time but he kept coming back to me and after about two or three years I agreed to take it on.”

From a humble birth in Barbados to the street parties of the Bronx, Grandmaster Flash emerged as a pioneer of modern music.

He took a stack of vinyl and a pair of decks and created a whole new art form, cutting and mixing other people’s music to make a revolutionary new sound, and in just 30 years his message has conquered the world.This month the granddaddy of hip hop, now 51 years old, is returning to Australian shores to play a special two hour set at the Capitol. THE KNOWLEDGE chats with Flash about his first studio album in the last 20 years, The Bridge.

are the ancestor to what is manifested, so in my thinking stage I was thinking, ‘I’d like to do the track this way and I’d like it to sound this way’. And as I got closer to manifesting the proper deal that’s when I said, ‘okay, now it’s time’. First thing first was to build the proper recording studio and get all the toys I would need. I had been taught by some of the best engineers on the planet, you know, so I know my way around a recording console. I had to get these things in a room and bring in the right people. Then I had to tell my promoters I couldn’t tour anymore, not for a minute. I find it very hard to be able to multi-task a tour and a record, it’s too difficult.

Your son, J-Flo, features on The Bridge. How did he get involved?

Yeah, for a long time he was like, ‘Dad, Can I do this? I’m really good at this’.

But I made it clear to him that he was not going to be a rapper who is the son of The Bridge features a host of A-list rappers including Snoop Dogg, KRS-One, Grandmaster Flash. You are going to be a rapper who happens to be the son of Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip. It’s a classic record with international soul. Why did Grandmaster Flash. There’s a difference. He had to go out there and get his respect you decide to go back into the studio after so many years? first, I wasn’t going to support him, I wasn’t going to use my influence to get him I was probably looking for the right situation, the right company and to any level. And he did it. He came back from a tour and I said, ‘okay, give me one the right team of people who could help me pull off my thoughts. Your thoughts verse’. And it was good. It’s a start, we gonna see...I’m kind of hard, though.

Grandmaster Flash You’ve talked about hip hop as a universal language – how did that idea influence The Bridge?

Hip hop has always been a universal language, and I’m one of the architects. I had a mental template for this record, I always knew how I was going to do this – I wanted to build it like a DJ set. It’s all about different genres and grooves that connect. I have an advantage because I tour. The American culture differs from the Australian culture; the Australian culture differs from the Japanese culture; the Japanese culture differs from German culture, you know?

I’ve been able to get a first-hand look at what works and what doesn’t work, and how to bring to all together.

Has it been strange to see hip hop pass from being a black culture to being a multi-racial music form?

I’m not surprised at all. My biggest surprise was that it traveled around the world.

But when I first went shopping for records, I didn’t just look in the black music section, you know? I looked in the pop bins, the rock bins, the R&B bins, the funk bins, the punk bins, the disco bins…just looking to find a break. And once I came up with science of touching a record and moving it backwards and forwards in a circular motion and taking a break and making that the main theme of my DJing, you know, it was obviously gonna be for everyone. If I played 15 songs and I got multi-racial beats on the records, of course I’m gonna get a multi-racial crowd.

Eventually I’ll get you.

How do you feel about the money that’s been flowing through the rap industry in the last decade?

I think it’s quite wonderful. Now that hip hop has become big business, it’s given me a chance to travel the world and do what I do in almost every country in the world. So I’m quite happy with the way it’s turned out.

Is the art form corrupted by that success?

There’s corruption in everything.

There’s corruption in jazz, there’s corruption in rock, there’s corruption in R&B. It’s unavoidable.

But for the most part, I’m pretty happy.

How have you coped with the move to digital scratching?

I’m still learning it. Being a scientist first and a producer second, I’m fascinated.

The science of being able to DJ a waveform is nothing I had really fathomed, but I am a scientist first, so I’m cool with it. I use digital but I use the old analogue vinyl as well, I carry both. The way I see it, the digital aspect of it is cool. If you know how to drive vinyl well, then you gonna be able to drive digital well, but if you were an awful driver with analogue, you’re gonna be awful with digital too. The process is exactly the same as the one I invented; you gotta move the disc back and forth in a clockwise motion.

You were inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 – tell us about that moment …

There were two awards that meant so much to me, you know? One of them was the BET Icon Award and the other was the Hall of Fame. With the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, for a long time I personally felt that they weren’t even going to acknowledge hip hop, because it has been so long. All the other genres of music had said yes, the media had said yes – I thought the Hall of Fame just wouldn’t cross over. Little do people know that hip hop is rock’n’roll, you know, because I play rock’n’roll breaks. But they got it; finally, they figured it out. And I look at is as not just Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five, but the whole culture of hip hop going in.

It’s great. It’s cool.

German house producer Sebo K laments to CB the negative influence of digital production on club producers today, as well as giving an insider view on life under Mobilee Records.

Sebo K is in a sonic ennui, having reached an impasse of sorts. While he continues to churn out noteworthy underground club cuts – take for example acclaimed dancefloor staples such Diva and Far Out – at regular intervals, he is apparently somewhat jaded, aggrieved at the current club scene’s general lack of enterprise.

Having lamented to Resident Advisor recently that, “I’m not really happy... I don’t find so much satisfying stuff these days,” I push Sebo on whether he has emerged from this decidedly gloomy headspace. His response is curt.

“No, I think that’s a development that will take some time.” Never one to let an interviewee down lightly, and still basking in Deep Impressions’ sweep at the recent International Dance Music Journalism Awards (IDMJA) I seize the initiative and ask Sebo whether he thinks that not enough producers take risks these days, and suggest that many of the sounds that are prevalent in the present club milieu are very homogenized. I pause and raise an eyebrow for dramatic effect, before questioning whether he thinks this is “more so now than, say, five years ago?” Clearly impressed by my acumen, Sebo ruminates on my inquiry.

“I definitely think so,” he nods finally, taking a sip from his glass of Evian. “Due to the technical possibilities these days it’s pretty easy for everybody to produce tracks. With digital distribution companies it’s also quite easy to release tracks. At least compared to five years ago or longer. Look at the massive amount of releases each week today and compare it to some years ago. I’m pretty sure that this has a lot of influence on this homogenized sound today because you don’t have to stand out with your music anymore to find a label that spends money in pressing it on vinyl.”

Despite his rather dour views (though you could argue Sebo is simply a straight shooter, a rarity in the club world!) things are going very well for Sebo K at the moment.

Having garnered consistent acclaim for his output on Anja Schneider’s Mobilee label, he has recently completed a business and commerce degree at university. When I ask on how he

Sebo K balanced the ostensibly conflicting variables of study and the DJ/club lifestyle, he chuckles and chides me mockingly with his index finger.

“Oh yes I know about bleary eyes on Mondays. I can recommend eye drops…”

When the laughter – mostly his – subsides, he continues to explain how he successfully juggled the different lifestyles. “It was a question of a good time management. On the weekends I was DJing, during the week I was studying and over my vacation I took some time for producing music.” Sebo K also helmed the latest Watergate compilation, following on from the likes of Onur Ozer and my close associate Konrad Black.

“I wanted to create a mix that you could listen to at home,” he explains.“I wanted to put some music in it that would be nice to listen to in a few years time without people thinking: ‘Oh no, I can’t listen to this and that hit record anymore’. There are also some exclusive tracks and edits on it. I think it is pretty important to give the consumer something special in order to stand out from the mass of DJ mixes and podcasts.”

CHARLIE MAY STEPPING OUT OF THE SHADOWS You may not have heard of Charlie May – but you’ve probably heard his work. He’s one half of legendary UK house act Spooky and is most widely known for his studio partnership with Sasha. For many years May has been working behind the scenes, but now he’s stepping out of the shadows to emerge as a true talent in his own right. ALFRED GORMAN caught up with the enigma before his first ever solo tour. like Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and Yazoo were playing all these amazing synths. I developed a love of instrumental music. I would always enjoy the 12inch remixes of pop hits more than the originals - if the vocal was absent even better!

Bands such as Talk Talk, Japan and Roxy Music made a big impact on me, as well as ambient music like Eno, Harold Budd…”.

You’ve been Sasha’s production partner on most of his records since Xpander. What’s it like working with him in the studio?

“Every time we work together the circumstances are different really. He always has strong ideas about what he wants to end up with. We just have to figure out how to get there! Sometimes there is much stabbing about in the dark until we find what we like, but that’s a luxury that I only have with the Sasha records really. It’s a team effort, without time or budget constraints.”

I believe you’ve been working on an artist album? Any other new projects in the pipeline?

“We have just completed a new Spooky album! I’m really excited about the way it sounds.

Very pure techno. It’s strange that we haven’t made an up-tempo club album of original material since Gargantuan. I have some new club music in the pipeline, as well as the launch of my ambient label Music For Insomniacs this year. Eventually when I can afford the time I will put out an artist album – it’s something I am very keen to make happen. But Spooky and Sasha and my own stuff is keeping me busy enough already…”

Sasha’s story and rise to the top is quite well known, but what’s the Charlie May story?

Duncan (other half of Spooky) and I grew up together in the West Country. I used to go round to his house to listen to pop music since it was pretty much banned at home, and at school I would get into trouble for playing in bands and not doing any school work. We were lucky to be in the right place at the right time when the whole acid house scene kicked off.

Duncan was working for Brainiac Records and the Brain club, and also distributing tunes to shops around London, so we just fell into the scene, and started to meet a lot of like-minded folk from all over the world - I still enjoy that sense of community that electronic music brings.

What can we expect from your live show?

“The reason I classify what I am doing as live, is that it is all my own material or remixes.

Ultimately we are in the entertainment industry and when we play in clubs, it’s for people to have a good time at. It’s not some chin-stroking geek-out. I like to be busy while I am playing, so I have all sorts of variables built into my set. I use a combination of Ableton running 4 tracks of audio and midi controllers, so I can play with EQ and FX and then balance it all on the in-house mixer. I’ve only been to Australia once before, so am looking forward to the whole trip, especially the sun! It’s razor blade weather in the UK right now. The lack of daylight really affects me, especially being in the studio a lot - maybe I need to just get up earlier?!”

Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out received a loud response that only intensified when The County launched into a reggae tinged remix. Love Is Alright, the bonus track pressed onto a 4-inch vinyl record included with A Strange Arrangement, also kept punters moving.

After introducing the members of The County and briefly leaving the stage, Hawthorne started his encore with a new song titled Ruthless, which he said had been written by the group’s guitarist. The hard hitting track was a departure from the soulful tone of the set but kept the dance floor busy until Hawthorne finished with his Curtis Mayfield-channelling The Ills, which he dedicated to those affected by the Haiti earthquakes.

It was a top night of soul, with Hawthorne proving that he can not only do justice to his Motown heroes on record – he can also do it onstage.

Moving from the captivating vocals of Sophie Ellis Bextor in the Freemasons’ catchy Heartbreak to the intense synth of Wippenberg’s mesmerising track Pong and onto the aptly named track Shakin’ That Ass

by Pacific & Vandyck, Disc One is wall to wall listening pleasure.

With a hugely impressive precedent set already, Disc Two lacks the necessary firepower to rival its predecessor but with tracks like the demented electro popping Wack

by Evotion and Richard Durand’s enthralling tech trance No Way Home; it’s definitely worth a listen.

Sensation exceeded expectations with this offering making it the perfect summer party companion. Turn up the volume and enjoy the sensation.

The irrepressible Dave Seaman is back with another Masters Series mix for esteemed UK label Renaissance. The able Seaman slides through these two silky mixes like a true veteran.

Disc one starts with the ambient sounds of Fourtet’s Swimmer, and gradually builds through the first few tracks, layering the deep grooves and gentle percussion. The pace becomes more urgent as the acapella of UNKLE’s Heaven is sublimely combined with Andre Winter’s Trauma until finally a solid beat smashes through in the form of Ian Pooley’s Compact. A superb mix of tracks including Quivver, Moby, and Spooky roll by, building up to the exotic, tribal sounds of Fiol Lasse’s Svedala, and the epic finale of Ewan Pearson’s take on John Hopkins’ Light Through The Veins.

The second disc starts with another mashup of UNKLE’s Hold My Hand and Moderat’s Les Grandes Marches, quickly revealing itself to be a much darker, more standard club mix, moving though Seaman’s own Gobbledygook, Infusion’s newie, So Soon, Nic Fanciulli & Steve Mac’s 10%, before the climatic Gui Boratto remix of Freeland’s Mancry.

A solid comp, but disc one is the real standout; Seaman has done a load of additional production to make this a seamless piece, and another classic instalment in the Masters Series.

MOTHER OF GOD HAILMARY CD LAUNCH Amplifier Bar Saturday, January 16, 2010 For many of us who were there the first time around, the whole re-embrace of ’80s metal seems a bit weird and kinda dirty. Not only that, it’s bloody risky. Like the genres of funk rock, polka and reggae, if you don’t get it right, you’re going to find yourself in a world of wrong.

Baby Jane have enough raw ability to warrant their foray into these unforgiving waters, and the lion’s share of that ability lies with frontman Andy Smith.

The towering singer moves freely through the vocals realms of Bach, Neil and Jones and by doing so he’s managed to separate Baby Jane from so many bands that look like dicks attempting this stuff.

From here, though the lads might want to step the show up, if you’re going to pedal the glory metal then add a dash of Steel Panther and supercharge the visuals - from wardrobe to stage presence. You don’t have to hang from the ceiling looking like peacocks, but a little razzle-dazzle was always welcome back in the day.

PERFECT PIPES NEKO CASE/Jen Cloher Rosemount Hotel Sunday, January 17, 2010 Both times that Neko Case and her band have made their way to Perth they have been greeted by sweltering weather of over 40 degrees. The stifling conditions did little to dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

Such was the pull of the headliner that when Jen Cloher took to the stage shortly

of classic rock, and while they’re competent enough at doing so, there’s room for improvement in both the material and its execution. The guys have done all the hard yards; their sound is tight and they can play - a fact that is most obvious when focusing on Jonathan Romeo’s lead work. From here they just need to take more risks in their song writing and try to separate themselves from the pack.

Numbers were still looking pretty grim when the State Of Order lads turned up, but luckily for the punters inside, the four-piece held nothing back.

These guys are hard to pin down sound-wise, drawing from all corners of the metal map. You’ve got your nu-metal, your classic rock, metal metal, and the grunge thing all lumped in together, but it all seems to fall into line behind the bulldozing voice of Rob Viney. If the big guy can expand a bit more on his melody lines, State Of Order should be on their way.

After making the ballsy decision to head to the States for the production of their new EP, Hailmary seemed intent on making a statement tonight. The band have improved no end over the last 12 months, and the distance between them and their peers was immediately obvious.

If you did the ‘90s heavy rock thing you’re going to be at home listening to these guys. Bands like Alice In Chains, Stone

Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam all seem to have band’s greatest strength. They laid down a a place in the Hailmary sound, and from the rock solid set and gave their new record the crowd’s reaction it’s a good mix. welcome it deserves.

While each of the lads fired tonight it was the cohesion that proved to be the _GRANT MCCULLOCH

after doors opened she was already greeted by a sizeable crowd. Flanked by a guitarist, the duo led their way through a set of pleasant enough, if not somewhat earnest folk/pop tunes. It is easy to see why they would have placed the strong voiced Cloher in such company, and she filled the void nicely before the headliner even if the set was lacking in gusto.

The Rosemount air conditioner was working overtime by the time the announcement requesting people refrain from taking photos or videoing the show signalled the arrival of Neko Case and her band. It took a little while for the mixer to find the perfect sound, but the quality of the songs was never an issue as Maybe Sparrow and People Got A Lot Of Nerve got an early showing.

Soon after the lights dimmed there appeared to be no power to the stage, but the mood remained high as punters and band waited out the short break. After the resumption the

sound improved markedly, and by the time of I Am An Animal things were sounding crisp. Hold On, Hold On may be one of those tunes that has been flogged on the radio but it was delivered with such conviction that it was offered new life.

A trait of a Neko Case gig has often been how impeccably dressed they are. The weather wasn’t made for suits and the auburn-haired singer was well relaxed in a faded t-shirt, often pulling her impressive long locks into a bun for relief.

Case was intent on showcasing the newest album and played Middle Cyclone, The Pharaohs, Polar Nettles in quick succession. This downbeat section of the evening may not have been made for dancing,but each tune smouldered.

Digging for older material Deep Red Bells was a surprise yet welcome addition.

A highly regarded musician in her own right, Kelly Hogan provided the most impeccable of backing vocals, and much of the between song

banter as well. Her introductions to the tunes were light, quirky and amused the crowd and herself greatly.

As she had all evening, Case let loose her impressive pipes on Margaret VS Pauline before reining things back in for a chilling That Teenage Feeling. Ending on a high, Case pulled out one of her poppier moments in This Tornado Loves You only to return for an encore including Train From Kansas City.

It is a simple formula that Case works on. She writes clever songs, surrounds herself with a talented band that perform faultlessly and tops it all off with one of the finest contemporary females voices of recent times. After this nights performance there is little doubt as to why she has superstar status in Canada. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

Perth power pop machines The Chevelles are taking their tightly tuned lived show for a drive down south.Popping in at Settlers Tavern,Margaret River, on Saturday, February 13, and The Prince of Wales, Bunbury, on Friday, February 19, the band will be playing tracks from their latest full-length Accelerator.

Accelerator is set to be released on February 15 through New York taste-maker Little Steven’s (Bruce Springsteen E Street Band, The Sopranos) prestigious record label Wicked Cool Records. This, the bands fifth album, was recorded in Perth over a 12 months period at Forensic, Lounge and Atomic Studios and was mixed by the late John Villani at Northbridge Sound Studios.

Catch The Chevelles before they disappear on their whirlwind 20th Anniversary World Tour which includes dates throughout the USA (including a SXSW appearance in Austin, TX) and Europe. Perth fans can also see The Chevelles at The Big Day Out on Sunday, January 31, and at Amplifier on Saturday, February 27.

Eternally-touring troubadour Ash Grunwald makes a fleeting, one-date only appearance down south this January at The Dunsborough Tavern. Popping in on Sunday, January 24, local blues and roots fans can lap up the maestro’s driving, beat driven brand of roots music. With his latest live album, recorded at Freo’s Fly By Night Musicians Club, hot off the press, this will be a great opportunity to snap up the recording before it hits the shops.

Joining Grunwald down south will be the appropriately named Current Swell from Canada. Perth fans can also catch Grunwald at The Fly By Night on Friday,January 22 (live album launch show) and at the Indi Bar on Saturday, January 23.

CROOKED REIGN THEM CROOKED VULTURES Challenge Stadium Tuesday, January 19, 2010 It’s not very often you get to see a first-album band play a venue as big as Challenge Stadium, but the experience is quite surreal. Considering the lineup of Them Crooked Vultures, playing to huge crowds is like a walk in the park, but a new band is a new band, and the audience was treated to a far-less refined (and far more ballsy) version of ‘stadium rock’.

Playing their recently-released album in its entirety, with some of the most impressive ‘jam for a bit, then come back in together’ extensions you could ever hope for; Them Crooked Vultures played so intuitively together, whilst still maintaining total control of the flow of the set. They sped up, slowed down, made mistakes and improvised here and there (deliciously human traits usually gone by the time a band is filling stadiums) which gave the ‘supergroup’ a fierce musical edge. Additionally, the band looked like they were having the time of their lives – another characteristic that is usually absent in stadium-level bands.

But that’s kind of what makes this band special… they can fill a stadium based on who is in their band, and can do so before their album is even released. That is practically unheard of. Fortunately, it turned out to be one of the best albums of the past decade, but the fact remains that most people in the audience hadn’t signed on to specifically see Them Crooked Vultures… they bought their tickets in faith that the collaboration of Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones was going to be amazing no matter what.

And was it ever.

Simply watching Dave Grohl play drums was an experience in itself. The man truly is one of the finest rock drummers to have walked the planet, and the understandably massive Bonham influence on his style shone through – particularly if you were looking for it on account of the next band member in line for praise: John Paul Jones.

For those of us too young to have

Them Crooked Vultures (photo by Lisa Businovski) seen Led Zeppelin back in the day (or too poor to have flown to London for the band’s 2002 reunion) it was remarkably cool and weird seeing John Paul Jones on stage, looking and playing like a man half his age. Dignified, classy, and whipping out his trademark runs; Jones was quite simply the perfect man for the job.

Which owes a lot to frontman Josh Homme, whose songwriting skills in Them Crooked Vultures have made best use of both the power of Grohl and the slickness of Jones.

Showing just how fluidly and skilfully he can play guitar, Homme was absolutely bang-on – right down to the numerous and specific guitar sounds he so perfectly transplanted from the record to the stage. For the most part his vocal delivery was equally amazing – his ability to switch back and forth between a full-powered voice and falsetto (without losing power or volume) rivalled only by crooner Chris Isaak. Casual and cool-as-fuck on stage, Homme’s understated stage presence contrasted perfectly against his busy fingers, constantly working the fretboard.

Which leads us to the night’s unsung hero, Spinerette guitarist Alain Johannes, who

was overshadowed by his bandmates right up until he took a solo guitar spot – at which point he blew everyone the fuck off the stage. It’s not surprising that Johannes smoked it so hard, considering he was picked to join the world’s most exclusive lineup (and has of course previously traded licks with Homme in Queens Of The Stone Age), but his fingerpicked ragtimemeets-rockabilly solo was breathtaking in its complexity and subtlety.

Fittingly, complexity and subtlety are what Them Crooked Vultures are all about.

While their songs have the basic pop elements of verses, catchy choruses and solos, there is an absolute labyrinth of information held within all of them. The guitar playing alone is incredibly clever and rich (so much so that the band needed a second guitarist of Johannes calibre for their live show), and works through the journey-esque songs that also display the best lyrics of Homme’s career, the most diverse drumming of Grohl’s career, and John Paul Jones’s elegantly sophisticated touch.

And while Them Crooked Vultures have received some fairly ho-hum reviews for their live shows thus far, it is purely because

some people haven’t factored in what we looked at at the start of this review: that this is a new band. Don’t let the experience of the members, nor the size of the venue, fool ya… playing a whole new set is a big deal for any band, let alone one playing songs as intricate as Them Crooked Vultures’. Besides which, how fucking boring would it be to see such crafty rock’n’roll played without any touch of soul.

Pretty fucking boring.

But the crowd knew what was going on, and even though most people haven’t had time to learn the lyrics to songs, nor have intros become familiar enough to evoke that explosive applause after half a bar; they watched on in studious wonder, soaking up everything happening on stage. That the audience was a tad quiet meant only that they were paying attention.

And whether your eyes were glued to the stage, or you were having a bit of a groove with your arms in the air, the vibe was the same… absolutely amazing.

THE BROWN STUDY BAND

On Saturday, January 23, Control-Control will be joined by Bravo Inferno and The Milkmen when they launch their new EP, Satellites At The Sea, at the Norfolk Basement. As vocalist Grant Christiensen explains, this EP has come about as rapidly as the band itself.

“The band really became complete and together about eight months ago when Hayley joined to play bass,” Christiensen begins. “Before that Scotty and I had been doing some jamming and playing the odd gig here and there as a duo for about six months. As soon as Hayley came on board we all knew that we had a great combination of musical ideas. It was almost instant. After playing a few shows together and receiving some great feedback, we decided that with a bit of fine-tuning our style was gonna work quite well. We all enjoy the rock / folk / blues aspects of the music so we decided to run with that,” he says.

INTO THE NEVER’

On Saturday, January 23, Neverborn will launch their new CD, Decimator, in a big night of “We wanted to produce a quality metal at Villa. Weird, wonderful and full of technical savvy; The Brown Study Band launch their debut EP, What Came First?, at the Rosemount on Saturday, January 23. Joining them will be Hailmary and Gombo, as well as Dazastah, Layla and Dan Hart.

“The sound of the band is an amalgamation of everyone’s personal influences: The Siren Tower from Zappa, to Tool, to Deepak Chopra,” explains guitarist Anthony Santella of an otherwiseSIREN OF THE TIMES unexplainable sound.

And this sense of humour is not just lyrical. Given they have the musicianship to do so, The Brown Study Band also have a fair amount of fun fucking around with musical conventions and turning them inside-out.

“Generally we will jam and hope to hit on a million dollar riff that ends up being twisted, pushed, pulled and extrapolated upon from each individual. Lots of laughter goes on through this stage in trying to outdo one another with absurdity.

Dez takes care of all the lyrics but it can be a turn of phrase from one of us that is the genesis for the Ruby Boots lyrical idea for the song. Otherwise it’s simply his crackpot humour and twisted sense of reality.

RAGGAMUFFIN FESTIVAL On Monday, January 25, the ME Bank Stadium will echo with the relaxed exotic beats of one of the most impressive lineups in the Raggamuffin festival’s history – with Shaggy, Lauryn Hill, Sly & Robbie, Julian Marley, Steel Pulse, Blue King Brown, Sean Kingston, and House Of Shern performing throughout the day.

Wyclef Jean has had to cancel his performance in order to join the relief team currently working around the clock in his native Haiti, which is suffering an incredible hardship in the wake of last week’s earthquake.

If you ask any established R&B, hip hop or reggae artist from the last decade who their musical influences are, majority of those artists will have Lauryn Hill included in their list. And it’s not because of her character in Sister Act II : Back In The Habit.

Already working in entertainment in both TV and film, Hill was intermittently a part of The Fugees from the age of 13, however her on-again, off-again stints were largely due to other acting roles and studies.

Working with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, the trio released their debut album Blunted On Reality to harsh reviews from critics and fans alike, which almost split the group. It wasn’t until the multi-platinum success of The Score in 1996 that the trio truly became household names worldwide.

The Score, which showed The Fugees fusion of hip hop, soul and Caribbean sounds, spawned a number of chart hits including Fu-Gee-La, Ready Or Not, Wyclef Jean’s version of the Bob Marley classic No Woman, No Cry, and the popular cover of Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly.

After the birth of her first child in 1996, Hill released The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill in 1998. The album highlighted her love for Motown with the smash hit Doo Wop (That Thing), as well as delving into Hill’s personal life lyrically in songs like To Zion which emphasises her decision to keep her first born, and I Used To Love Him which defined the breakdown of the relationship between Hill and Jean. The release showed Hill had successfully fused rap, soul, reggae and R&B into her own unique sound.

The album, which featured contributions from R&B/soul act D’Angelo,

Carlos Santana, Mary J Blige and John Legend, went on to sell over 423, 000 copies in the US in its first week alone, and helped Hill to become the first woman ever to be nominated 10 times in one year at the 1999 Grammy Awards. Of those 10 nominations, Hill won five Grammys including Album Of The Year, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song (for Doo Wop (That Thing)), Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best New Artist.

After a self-imposed exile from the music world in the early naughties, Hill returned with MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2001, showcasing her new work with a simple acoustic arrangement. However, although the simple release divided the critics, that wasn’t to say the album didn’t have any achievements. The song Mystery Of Iniquity was nominated for a Grammy, even though it had no promotion or radio airplay. Hip hop fanatics might recognise the song as an interpolation in Kanye West’s All Falls Down.

The Fugees reunited to perform at Dave Chapelle’s Block Party in 2004, and followed it up with another performance at the 2005 BET Music Awards. After a tour of Europe and a ‘reunion concert’, old tensions between Hill and other members of the group resurfaced and any chance of another Fugees album soon diminished.

Although, today Columbia Records claims the singer / rapper is on hiatus, according to her partner, Rohan Marley, she still continues to write music and perform today.

The Grammy Award-winner will take to the stage for an hour-long, solo set at Raggamuffin 2010 backed by her full band, reaffirming to many why she is still one of the biggest urban influences of this generation.
