Reactions/Comp’ Thing Flesh X-Press Interview: In With The New Music: Got It Covered Music: Mary J Blige Music: Darkest Hour New Noise
Welcome to the final edition of X-Press for 2010. In these pages we celebrate a rather epic year in music, film, art and culture – the good and the downright awful! So dip your toes in the swimming pool, pour another Singapore Sling and let our critics stroll you through the year in CDs, DVDs, film, fashion and plenty more. 2011 is already looking to be the biggest year in entertainment yet for Perth, so we look forward to seeing you out there amongst it. And lastly, thank you to all of our loyal readers who have kept the X-Press flame alive for its first quarter century, which we celebrated in August. It’s been a hoot. Happy New Year folks, and see you in 2011.

TIME FOR A CHANGE Dear X-Press, I don’t know about you, but I signed up to Facebook in 2006 and in 2007, I really started using it quite a bit. In the last few years, I’ve decided to spend less time wincing at the sight of ex-girlfriends canoodling on the beach with studs and have made my log-ins few and far between. This brings me to my point – why the fuck did Mark Zuckerberg get named Time magazine’s Person Of The Year for something that was unique and innovative a few years ago? Is it because a bunch of dudes made a movie about him this year? Firstly, Zuckerberg got pipped at the post by a little ol’ site called MySpace that all the kids were doing the top down pouty sunglass poses on first and, secondly, social networks have already picked up the award when Time named “You” or “the millions of anonymous contributors” who used Facebook and YouTube and all the social networking sites as the 2006 Person Of The Year. It goes without saying that Julian Assange is the most important man in the world right now. Wikileaks has had governments all over the world whipped into a frenzy because he’s used freedom of information for the benefit of ordinary people. We have a right to know about what the government covers up and the fact that he’s getting treated like a terrorist on

charges which professional athletes get away with every day is testament to this. On Facebook, everyone’s information is on display for all to see. There’s significantly more information on the internet about you than you would like thanks to Facebook. People’s accounts get hacked all the time and then all the friends get targeted. The advertising is catered towards your likes, marital status and anything else you write on the site. While we pay nothing to use the site, there’s plenty of valuable information on there that’s sold to marketing companies everyday. Is this really something we should be rewarding? It’s a case of rewarding big brother for distributing all of our personal details, while the man trying to even the playing field is held down. For shame Time magazine, you used to be relevant. Now you’re rewarding a website that tells us which Disney princess we are.
There seems to be this unwritten rule where people think that you’re allowed to drive as fast as you want when you’re in the right lane because you’re more important than other road users and you deserve to get where you’re going in slightly less time than everybody else. Well let me tell you all something, right lane speeders, they are no unwritten road rules. On Boxing Day while making the pilgrimage to Bunbury, I was in the right lane, cruising along at about 114 in the 110 zone. But this just wasn’t good enough for the jerk-off driving a van that was tailgating me. As soon as an opening of two metres was there between my car and the car of the dude next to me in the left lane, van driver changed lanes, had his head hanging out the window yelling at me like I had super sensitive ears that could understand what someone in another car was saying while my windows were wound up and we’re both speeding into wind. He almost lost control as he immediately got back in the right lane and now Winston Smith I can only hope that when he did crash that day, Via email that he only killed himself and not any innocent bystanders. ROAD RAGE When driving to Southbound this weekend, I certainly hope I don’t have to deal with Dear X-Press, ‘roided-up road ragers who think they’re entitled to endanger the lives of careful drivers. All it takes Driving down south over the Christmas break is a slip up while you’re abusing someone in the was certainly a pain in the rear this year. But it car next to you and you’re toast. wouldn’t have been such a headache if people who drive in Western Australia were aware of the Curtis E Via Email road rules.

IN WITH THE NEW…
At this time of reflecting on the year that was and what’s to come, BOB GORDON lends an ear to the thoughts of 10 Perth notables.
John Hyde
JOHN HYDE, MLA Shadow Minister For The Arts State Member For Perth
Lisa Scaffidi
LISA SCAFFIDI The Right Hon. Lord Mayor City Of Perth I think 2011 will be like 2010 – fastpaced and dynamic. Our City is achieving much right now not only because of the preparations for CHOGM but as a global city on the move and recognised for its astute attitude to business and its fabulous livability. The City of Perth is going through a renaissance with new developments on virtually every corner from the new BHP building and re-activation of formerly vacant buildings to the start of work on the former Treasury building; redevelopment of Forrest Place; the Link project our new Arena and State Theatre; great city retail stores and small bars opening up all over. If you don’t feel the new sense of place in Perth – you are asleep or just not visiting our city! Perth is the centre of our universe and we should be proud to live in such an amazing, safe and friendly part of the world. Best wishes for the second decade of the 21st century to all readers.
2010 was another great year for small independent bands in Perth and for the alternative art galleries and street artists. The Barnett Government cut arts funding by around 20 per cent, with other agencies like Western Power closing down the Museum of Energy and the East Perth Power Station remains empty and un-artsed. 2011? Buoyed by the success of Artrage’s Spiegeltent, the Barnett Government will close down the new State Theatre Centre in Northbridge a month after its opening because none of the local companies can afford to hire it. The Spiegeltent will be erected on the site of the demolished Entertainment Centre and vaudeville will replace Shakespeare and David Williamson in local companies’ repertoires. Like other under-developed mining nations in Africa, WA will swap a shipload of iron ore for CRAP – the Chinese Regional Artistic Program. The Chinese will step in and show us how to redevelop the East Perth Power Station into the most amazing artists’ incubator and galleries district, just as they’ve done with their own 798 Industrial zone artists’ district in Beijing. The One Movement Festival will finally fulfil its $3m Barnett Government grant, with QANTAS and Singapore Airlines putting on an extra 79 fully-laden A380 superjumbos of festival-goers flying into Perth, primarily to hear One Movement’s opening concert performed by bellringers at the Belltower.
Danni Colgan Marcus Canning
MARCUS CANNING Artrage Director/CEO As we reach the end of 2010 and look to 2011, it’s a time of reflection, and perhaps for grand aspiration. Things are changing fast, and in the words of Ferris Bueller,“If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” It’s exciting times and a good time to be living it up in Perth. In February we’ll have a chance to experience the romance and wonder of a Spiegeltent in Perth for the very first time during Fringe World. This makes me very happy, and I know it will make heaps of X-Press readers happy come February. We’ve got the CHOGM meeting in October with an expected attendance from the Queen. Not as powerful as Oprah, sure, but expect some crazy, city-wide security to roll out regardless. Oh, and not to forget - the first European Space Elevator Competition is being held in Munich in June. Given that the preferred site for the space elevator’s anchor is a floating rig off Rottnest, this could make us one small step closer to having the world’s first permanent space tourism infrastructure on our doorstep. Welcome to Earth, it’s Perth...

2010 was fun but thank fuck it’s over. Rex Monsoon and I are getting married in 2011. I’m looking forward to that. Can’t wait to say, ‘I’m with the DJ’ and actually have the legal documents to prove it. Does that suit? I can never be serious. It clashes with my complexion. Graham Wood

2010: busy busy busy. Resettling in Perth, extravaganza of Beck’s Music Box, new house and renovation-land, the crazy hail storm, keeping 100+ artists in check on a Spanish beach for Africa Express, change in Prime Minister, a quick-stop scouting visit to Brazil. Favourite gigs of 2010: Antony with Orchestra, Dirty Three, Jonsi, Caribou at Field Day, Gorillaz. Anticipating for 2011: Beck’s Music Box - bring it on! Summer in my new garden. Escaping winter, hopefully Hawaii! Favourite gigs: looks like there will be plenty to choose from! Os Mutantes, Joanna Newsom, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, The Books… and the rest!
2010 will be remembered in my mind as the year when (to quote the Financial Review) “The High Court of Australia finally had its Day in the Sun”. Most people perceive the courts (particularly in WA), as a dumping ground for characters from a Dickens novel: those who have fallen foul of the law, or their victims, each hollering up the halls in opposite directions, calling out for justice. But the courts play another role. One carved out through adversity with the most brutal and self-serving of all offenders – governments. They have stood against them as far back as the Magna Carte, through the English Civil war and the beheading of King Charles 1, defending the Separation of Powers on which the Westminster system of Democracy stands, boldly declaring: “who is to say that those who make a law make a just law”? In 2011 we will feel this dictum reverberating increasingly louder.

2010 has been a long and tough year in politics. We’ve seen the closest Federal election in decades and the first minority Government since the Second World War. While it presents a new set of challenges, Parliament is working well. I was honoured to become Australia’s Defence Minister in September this year. Seeing Australians serve overseas, often in dangerous conditions, is a heavy responsibility for us. This has been a particularly difficult year in Afghanistan and our thoughts are with the 10 families who have lost loved ones. 2011 will no doubt be full of new challenges, but I am looking forward to tackling whatever arises after a traditional WA family break in the South West of Western Australia.

Songwriter/Mother 2010 was a bit like riding a wild horse and holding on for dear life, with moments in there of cruising across the plains and then dropping off precipices Man From Snowy River Style. When I look back now it feels like a manic slide show of juggling touring with children, album releases with prekindy and dance concerts. Many moments of asking myself, ‘what the hell am I doing?’ and then other moments of playing really rewarding shows and feeling connected to my family and my songs and my audience and thinking it is all worthwhile. I spent two months in Brooklyn, doing some writing and hanging with my littl’uns. It was pretty amazing and utterly hectic at times. So 2011 is gonna be a little different, I am going to magically strike a graceful balance across all the aspects of my life that I feel passionate about, this will occur at 12:01 am 1/1/2011, and I think I might even be adorned with a flowing velvet cape and a leotard and maybe a headband. I am going to be brutal about what matters and what just doesn’t. I am going to take great care of myself and have incredible times with my man and my kids and wonderful adventures through my music. I’m going to keep on writing and am looking forward to a bit of recording as well. My mantra for 2010 was Low Expectations and High Optimism. I managed to apply it most of the time. I am carrying that little sucker forward. I like it. It makes me feel as if me and that wild horse understand each other and we both like being a little bit wild and out of control and holding on for dear life sometimes... but we both also love those magical cruises across the plains. www.xpressmag.com.au

MARY J. BLIGE Ragga To Riches
Mary J. Blige is a truly unique character in the world of music. HUGH ROBERTSON phones in with the notoriously prickly interviewee ahead of her debut Australian appearance at Raggamuffin on Wednesday, January 26, at Fremantle Oval, alongside Jimmy Cliff, Maxi Priest, Sean Paul and many more. When conducting phone interviews, my standard opening is to ask the interviewee what they have planned for the day. Even if there’s nothing noteworthy to talk about, at the very least it allows the artist to settle into our chat and not feel as though I’m trying to ambush them from the very start. So when Mary J. Blige replies, “Um, I’m in Los Angeles, California. Doing an interview with you. That’s what I’m up to”, I start having a bad feeling about this. Indeed, as we progress Blige seems to have very little interest in answering any of my questions with any detail whatsoever. It’s not as though we don’t have anything to discuss; the talking points, in fact, are endless. After 20 years, nine Grammys, eight multi-platinum albums and 50 million albums sold, Blige is making her way to Australia for the very first time to headline the huge Raggamuffin Festival – alongside acts like Jimmy Cliff and The Original Wailers.
“SO IF YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT YOU LOVE, LIKE MARY J. BLIGE, OR MICHAEL JACKSON, OR JANET JACKSON – WHEN MARY J. BLIGE SPEAKS TO YOU, AND SHE’S THIS HUGE SUPERSTAR, [AND SHE] SAYS TO YOU ‘I’M GOING THROUGH THIS TOO’ OR ‘I WENT THROUGH THIS TOO’, IT MAKES PEOPLE FEEL BETTER.”
Mary J. Blige
But don’t read anything into an R&B star performing at what’s traditionally been a reggae-based festival; she tells me she’s not planning any reggae-fied versions of her enormous back-catalogue, nor is she making a statement about her love for her herbal namesake. finally enticed Blige out here, she says, is simply because “they asked”. And when I inquire as to what she’s looking forward to most about her first trip down under, she tells me she wants to “see some things”. Another talking point? The new album Mary J. Blige is currently working on, with a rollcall of the top producers in the hip hop world that includes Jay-Z, Swizz Beatz, Ne-Yo and Q-Tip – along with many others. But it turns out we already know what it’s going to sound like. “I mean, basically it’s the formula that I do all the rest of my albums with,” Blige reveals. “Where I’m at right now, what’s around me, what I’m coming through, what I am victorious in… People expect from me what they want from me. So I just make what people want.” “What people want” has, for much of Blige’s career, been to hear her sing about overcoming the hardships of her life – abusive relationships, childhood torment, substance abuse. The basic template is catharsis-bynumbers, with Blige battling her demons over swelling string arrangements and R&B production. It’s the content of the songs as much as the style itself that has endeared her to so many for so long. “I think people in general just want to know that they’re not the only one suffering,” she says. “So if you have someone that you love, like Mary J. Blige, or Michael Jackson, or Janet Jackson – when Mary J. Blige speaks to you, and she’s this huge superstar, [and she] says to you ‘I’m going through this too’ or ‘I went through this too’, it makes people feel better. It makes people look at you as not so untouchable. And now you become loveable. You become touchable, and when they see you they’re not thinking about killing you, they’re thinking about hugging you. They’re thinking about giving you something that you gave to them.” Here, then, is the centre of the Mary J. Blige world view: it all comes down to respect and reciprocity. Do unto others, stay neutral, and get along. It’s a philosophy that encompasses everything, from her frequent collaborations with hip hop and very non-hip hop stars (including Sting, Elton John and Andrea Boccelli), her detachment to any of the famous rivalries and ‘beefs’ through the history of her genre, and her tendency to work with lots of producers at once (there are 17 producers listed on her last album Stronger With Each Tear, and only 12 tracks). The longer the interview goes on, the more answers Blige gives that are seemingly devoid of any real interest in the subject matter. She tells me that she features on other people’s songs “because they request [her] presence”; and she works with countless producers because “they all have something different to offer”, rather than because they reinforce her own artistic vision. This last one is especially significant because her artistic vision seems to consist of creating the music that people want to hear. And then Blige makes it easy for me, explaining that she enjoys doing guest vocals on other people’s songs because she likes “to work with people that have great personalities” – and I realise that, despite talking to her for 10 minutes, I have absolutely no sense of what she is like as a person at all. Maybe it doesn’t matter. She writes huge hits and puts on a huge show; 50 million Mary J. Blige fans can’t be wrong. And in an industry as ego-dominated as the music world (and particularly the hip hop world), Blige may well have hit on the perfect method for winning friends and influencing people: do your work, do it well, keep your head down and don’t say anything that might upset anyone. It certainly seems to be working for her.

DARKEST HOUR Rock’n’Robe Since their inception in 1995, Darkest Hour has produced some of the most important music of its genre including 2000’s Mark Of Judas and 2005’s Undoing Ruin. The band returns to Perth to play Amplifier on Sunday, January 9. MIKE WAFER reports. On an unexpected day off on their recent American tour, Darkest Hour are enjoying some rest. Well, at least one of them is. Enter the band’s vocalist, John Henry. “I’m sitting on a tour bus, grabbing a beer from the cooler, sitting in a robe,” he explains. “I have this really hot bathrobe that I take everywhere, and I’ve been wearing it all day because we have a day off. We were supposed to play Salt Lake City tonight, but there is some big hoo-ha in the city, so we had to cancel. So we’re parked in a Flying J truck stop and I’ve got my robe on. It’s a ‘Robe Day’,” he says, sounding content. And why wouldn’t he... Robe Day sounds very promising. “It’s just the best way to relax,” he explains. “We only have one [scheduled] day off this tour, because it works better that way... you’re more in the zone that way. You get more into the routine. Sometimes after a day off you’re a bit too (lets out a big yawn). A bit too relaxed, you know?” What, no days off to rest the voice, per the usual singer’s request? Apparently not, John Henry’s laugh would imply. “No... I don’t know... to be honest I
20
“I THINK THAT’S ABSOLUTELY HUMAN INSTINCT ISN’T IT. WE’RE ALL GENETICALLY PROGRAMMED TO WANT TO MAKE BABIES OR SOMETHING (LAUGHS). LA IS NOT THAT.” don’t really know what I’m doing. I just get up there and scream and run around. I don’t know about resting my voice. I thought playing every night would actually strengthen it, like my throat muscles or whatever,” he says, ending with another big laugh. “But I guess we’ll see tomorrow if having a day off works.” And if it does, that means more Robe Days?
Darkest Hour
“ The next Robe Day isn’t until Thanksgiving where the tour lands in LA, which is where I live, so it works out pretty good for me (laughs). That’ll be a pretty big Robe Day too. My mum lives in LA, but she’s going to be up in San Francisco, so this is going to be a band Thanksgiving.” Inaugural, or have Darkest Hour had a band Thanksgiving Robe Day before? “Actually we have,” he excites. “Also in
LA, which is weird and coincidental, but I swear I’m not making this happen...” he trails off as he steps off the tour bus and into world. “Oh wow. I can see the whole city lights of Albuquerque right now. It looks really pretty. A buena vista, if you will,” he says with a chuckle before pausing to enjoy the view a bit more. A view that he probably won’t see again for a whole year... Which makes you wonder what life on the road does to one’s sense of ‘home’? “Well the band has a few of those around the world,” Henry explains. “Budapest, Hungary... Trier, Germany... there are places we go to where a lot of old friends come out and it becomes a very big family affair. Even places you don’t expect. We recorded recently in a town in what I think was the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it was a really nice, pretty looking place. So there can be places like that. And I personally have a few places that feel like home as well. DC, which is where I grew up... New York, where I lived for a while... so it’s nice to have a sense of home on the road. “It usually doesn’t happen though,” he adds. “Usually it’s a Flying J (laughs).” To be sure there is a price to pay. But, on some nights, you get the lights of Albuquerque too. But it’s clear how much John Henry loves the road, loves his band, and loves his life. As a band, Darkest Hour have been heavily shaped by their DC roots, but not by its now legendary hardcore scene, as most DC band stories tend to go. “We were the outsiders to that,” Henry says. “That whole Dischord (Records) scene was very intense and very political. I guess in DC you’re exposed to a bit more politics because people are talking about it when they’re out and stuff. A lot of people who work in politics work in DC. But we had a little scene outside of all that stuff. “Then I lived in New York for a while, then moved out to California. People told me LA was really cool so I was like ‘I’ll check that out for a while’. I’m not sure if it’s the final destination, though,” he says, with the topic once again returning to that sense of home. The impression is that John Henry is roaming the globe searching for a place to nest. Taking a lung-full of the air in every place he visits to see how it tastes. He is a nomad, but one in search of a base. “I think that’s absolutely human instinct isn’t it. We’re all genetically programmed to want to make babies or something (laughs). LA is not that. I don’t really like most of it. I really like Northern California, though. San Francisco – that kind of area. I could live there for sure.” Though of course the next stop on the itinerary is Australia, and, excited about coming back, John Henry is reminded of his last visit down under. “ We went to this Koala Park in Brisbane,” he starts with a laugh (pronouncing Brisbane correctly, it should be noted). “And the woman who is handling them – her arms are all cut up to shit, and this thing is biting her knuckles for 10 minutes – she looks like she’s in a significant amount of pain, but she just keeps on going. She was a very tough looking lady. Lots of scars. “You’d hear ‘Koala handler’ and think ‘aw, what a cute job’, but no dice.”

FOALS Total Life Forever
KANYE WEST My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
On the surface music is largely a subjective medium. But deep below, amidst the folklore and tangled veins of rock’n’roll history, very few artists can take legitimate credit for redefining the parameters of popular song. A little over two years since the release of their dumbfounding debut Antidotes, Foals went and did just that! Antidotes was a breathtaking album in every possible way – a staggering display of musical aptitude, but also a goldmine of catchy anthems for Generation Y. Total Life Forever, however, would prove a more human record than its predecessor. While Antidotes sounded like an epitaph of the apocalypse, Total Life Forever was clearly more organic and dreamlike, fusing an almost tribal mantra with Foals’ trademark futuristic clatter. It proved the masterstroke that would herald a new giant in contemporary music. 2. MIDLAKE – The Courage Of Others 3. THE NATIONAL – High Violet 4. THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM – American Slang 5. It might be a tad obvious to select Kanye West for album of the year, since he brought out the best album of the year and all, but no one else came close to matching the opus that is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye’s had everyone trying to keep him down for years. Even President Dubya said he provided one of the most “disgusting” moments of his presidency, while Obama simply called him a “jackass.” People kinda forget that while stcisk and stones may break some bones (leading to getting your jaw wired shut), words can hurt, darn it! From tracks like Power sampling the great King Crimson to the ode to the hangers on and detractors in the marvellously orchestrated Runaway – My Dark Twisted Fantasy pushes the envelope in all the right areas and will finally give people the chance to interrupt his award acceptance speeches. 2. JOANNA NEWSOM Have One On Me
THE NATIONAL High Violet
Joanna really gave few others a chance to compete for album of the year in 2010. Not content with one great album Have One On Me is three albums worth of material. The lyrics are less obtuse, her voice more refined and the work still dense. You can immerse yourself inside this one for months and it still gives something new on each listen. Have One On Me is a stunning release on every measure.
After nearly a decade of being ‘on the cusp’ of greatness, there was little to suggest that 2010 would be the year that The National finally crossed a line to become the band they’ve been destined to be since the first chords of Secret Meeting rang out way back in 2004. Having already written an entire album, Eros, that was put on hold after bassist Chi Cheng’s car crash in 2008 which still sees him in a coma, Deftones went back into the studio and wrote and recorded Diamond Eyes. For a band to write a record this good at any point in their career is an achievement in itself, but to do so under such traumatic circumstances only solidifies Deftones as one of the true powerhouses of modern heavy rock. 2. JESSICA WILLOUGHBY SWANS My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky Michael Gira, the multifaceted man behind no wave/industrial/ apocalyptic folk outfit Swans, has become somewhat of a mythical figure for me. After almost 30 years, he still talks about his music in terms of physical suffering – that he has to bleed himself dry, metaphorically speaking, to create. It is that divine obsession, and continual need to move forward, that drove him back to his namesake project – even if past core member, Jarboe La Salle Devereaux, is no longer by his side. Often referred to as “the last of the zero men” – with his self-destructive attitude being key – Gira has mastered the art of capturing disenchantment. That exact moment, when an individual feels their psyche beginning to slip. My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky, the 11th offering from Swans, reflects every part of this description. This album never compromises on exploring the flaws of human nature; no matter how deep the filth goes. And it is this ugliness, fleshed out through Gira’s words, that makes Swans beautiful – at least in my eyes. 2. UFOMAMMUT – Eve 3. ZOLA JESUS – Stridulum II 4. RORCAL – Heliogabalus 5. WORST ALBUM: DEEZ NUTS – This Ones For You
While Kanye delivered, and Gorillaz produced a brilliant concept album (not to mention the live show of the year, yes, including U2 and Muse), the album I couldn’t seem to get out of my CD player was Bonobo’s Black Sands. The pseudonym of the UK’s Simon Green, his studio wizardry delved deep into a wide and exotic array of samples to create an effortlessly organic vibe on this electronic album. An ultra-fine, timeless work of soundscapey beats, down tempo variations, mixed with gorgeous vocals, exotic strings, yet with a deep, throbbing, dubstep heart. It’s lush, sublime, dark, edgy and engaging throughout the entire 12 tracks. An instant classic. 2. KANYE WEST – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 3. GORILLAZ – Plastic Beach 4. MASSIVE ATTACK - Heligoland 5. ARCADE FIRE – The Suburbs 6. FOUR TET - There Is Love In You 7. THE ROOTS – How I Got Over 8. TRENTEMOLLER - Into The Great Wide Yonder 9. DELPHIC - Acolyte 10. He’ll probably have a midlife crisis before he hits puberty and be a derelict, has-been, junkie on the streets of LA before his 21st.

The Year In DVDs There’s no doubt Avatar made an impact, becoming the highest grossing film of all time (in record time) into early 2010. The original midyear DVD release – which contained a simple cut of the theatrical release – might have been the biggest letdown on DVD all year if 20th Century Fox didn’t have the extended cut up their sleeve. After a quick cinematic bow in August, the eight extra minutes appeared on the two-disc release but you might still want to hold on to your money and hold out for the inevitable platinum / collectors / bells and whistles edition. So far, there are still no extras. Kick Ass polarised critics and audiences, but for our money it sucked harder than a diesel powered vacuum after the edginess of the comic book, and makes a similarly patchy, never-sure-what-it-is movie on DVD. The cultural juggernaut of Sex In The City 2 was no less embarrassing the second time – vacuous American women indulging in ostentatious excess while the western world collapses into nearbankruptcy. Setting it in a region already as beset with poverty and disenfranchisement as the Muslim Middle East was even more cringe-worthy. Disappointment followed some of the biggest films of the year onto DVD with Alice In Wonderland and Clash Of The Titans – both bone-headedly empty in cinemas. For all Sam Worthington’s carping that the latter made half a billion dollars, the simple reason is that we were all still in Avatar’s afterglow and excited by 3D – feelings one studio after another tore out of our hearts and stomped all over the floor. On the upside, this year bought us some great films that stand up much better at home. Revisiting Scorsese’s Hitchcock homage Shutter Island gives you the benefit of hindsight about the stunning reveal, and a million details you didn’t notice first time around jump out at you, making the experience feel brand new. And if the thrilling, brilliant Inception left you scratching your head (in a good way), every time you revisit it a little more of Chris Nolan’s smart, economic story unravels a little bit more – one to watch again and again. The Hughes Brothers’ biblical action film parable The Book Of Eli also had a twist, and even though some found it clunky, further viewings on DVD will further cement the outstanding way the film enmeshed the cerebral with the visceral. And from the decade made for home video came Hot Tub Time Machine, an ‘80s-style comedy with the aesthetic, humour and flavour of the era stamped lovingly all over it. That it starred ‘80s comedy poster boy John Cusack was just the first step in a brilliantly executed movie. Guilty pleasure viewing at its finest.

In its 55th year of continuous operation in Australia, the good ol’ TV, or idiot box as many know it, entertained, bored and baffled viewers. With the introduction of many new channels, including the likes of ABC News 24, Gem and 7mate, we Aussies were spoilt for choice when it came to at-home entertainment in 2010. So what were some of this year’s highlights? Let’s start with the most memorable, shall we? When it comes to live TV bungles there’s no going past the massive cock up that was the grand finale of Australia’s Next Top Model. As Amanda Ware and Kelsey Martinovich stood on stage in front of a huge live audience, Sarah Murdoch announced that Kelsey had taken out the competition, only to realise a minute or so later that it was actually Amanda who had won the crown! Those who watched the live finale will probably never forget Sarah Murdoch’s facial expression when she realised she’d announced the wrong name – she looked as if she was going to explode and throw up all at once. Hilarious! All in all it was a pretty big year for

reality TV, with shows such as Junior MasterChef attracting huge viewer numbers. After watching Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston rip shreds off the adult MasterChef contestants, Australian viewers were shown a different side of the MasterChef team as they pandered to youngsters with big food dreams. After way too many sickly sweet episodes in which precocious children cooked up dishes most adults would struggle to assemble, 12 year old Isabella took out the first ever Junior MasterChef title. What is an orchestra indeed! This year those with a penchant for drama sat glued to the TV for the final season of Lost. A rather confusing shemozzle, the Lost finale left most punters scratching their heads, this reviewer included. Perhaps it will make more sense second time round…? Probably not. THE YEAR IN REVIEW Cinema in 2010 What is it that makes us try to codify something so subjective and personal as art? It’s a weird notion, the idea that one piece of art can be measured against another, and some kind of objective ranking can be meted out, and it’s even weirder at the high end of the from, where the gradient is so fine that the qualitative differences can only me measured in nanometres. I mean, it’s easy enough to say that Iron Man 2 is a better film than Robin Hood, but they’re both pretty middling pieces of cinema, so who really gives a crap. It’s much harder to say whether, for example, Inception is a better film than Animal Kingdom, and by how much, and why. Which is a roundabout way of saying that these are the 10 best films that I saw this year, in no particular order. They’re all fantastic pieces of cinema, and well worth investigating, but I’m not going to wrack my brain comparing Four Lions to Winter’s Bone; that way lies madness. It’s enough to say that they’re both great films, and should be seen by as many people as possible. Four Lions, sadly, did not get seen by as many people as possible, which is a damn shame. In point of fact, it was barely screened here, and almost didn’t get distribution in the United States. Of course, seeing as it’s a comedy about radical Islamic suicide bombers by British comedy provocateur Chris Morris, it becomes easier to see why it had trouble attracting an audience. It’s a pity, because it’s easily one of funniest, most thought-provoking, and most warmly human films of the year. Equally rich in humanity is the
New Zealand film Boy, Taika Waititi’s ’80s-set paean to childhood, fatherhood, dreams and disappointment. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, it is simultaneously intensely personal in its concerns and universal in appeal, and marks writer/director/star Waititi, who cut his teeth directing episodes of Flight Of The Conchords, as a talent to watch out for. Much as Boy put rural New Zealand under the microscope, Winter’s Bone gives us a close examination of familial ties in the povertystricken Ozarks. Director Debra Granik paints her scenes with a chilly subdued palette that perfectly suits the downbeat noir mystery, and if newcomer Jennifer Lawrence, who plays the resourceful farmgirl tasked with tracking down her deadbeat father, doesn’t score on Oscar nomination for her performance, the fix is in. Jeremy Renner did score an Oscar nomination for his turn in The Hurt Locker, and director Kathryn Bigelow, who gave us the cult classics Point Break and Near Dark, won Best Director, becoming the first woman to ever do so. Their tense thriller about an American bomb disposal team in war torn Iraq is a masterpiece of suspense and characterisation. Suspense and character is also at the heart of Christopher Nolan’s puzzle-box action blockbuster Inception. A rare, provocative, and just downright strange film – it’s an action movie without villains, which is almost unheard of – it proved that big budget Hollywood fare need not be devoid of intellect. As did David Fincher’s excellent The
Inception
Social Network, which boasted a fantastic cast, one of the best scripts of the year by Aaron ‘The West Wing’ Sorkin, and a gripping storyline that was all about intellect, or at the very least intellectual property. I’m not placing The Social Network above the others here in terms of quality but, gun to my head, this is the film I’d betting on when the Oscars roll around next year – the Academy has owed Fincher a statue for a while now. What will be interesting is whether the exemplary Australian thriller Animal Kingdom picks up any nominations – Jacki Weaver has just been nominated for a Golden Globe for her blistering turn as the Machiavellian matriarch of a family of career criminals. First time director David Michod has given us the most exciting Australian film in years, and if you missed out on seeing it in the cinema, you should be running to the local
The Social Network
video emporium to rectify the situation. It’s rare to see a remake make anyone’s Best Of list, but Matt Reeves’ Let Me In, an American reworking of the Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In, is just so assured and moody a piece that it deserves mention. Plus, it gave us more of Chloe Moretz, who is proving to be one of the most capable young actors around today. even diehard fans of the original are advised to give this one a chance. And everyone needs to see Black Swan, from the simply masterful Darren Aronofsky. There’s just no way to do the film justice in a short paragraph, but suffice it to say that this surreal psychological horror set in the world of ballet demands to be seen. _TRAVIS JOHNSON

This may be Alba’s most two-dimensional role yet, and whilst the writers make full use of Alba and incorporate a scene where, high on Sustengo she rips off her clothes and dives into a pit, her role as the happy-go-lucky home wrecker is trite. The long running series joke about loveable family friend and new age billionaire Kevin Rawley (Owen Wilson) still being obsessed with Pam is stretched to breaking point, and the sex talk pivoted around Greg’s hippy parents, Bernie (Dustin Hoffman) and Rozalin (Barbara Streisand) was basically copied and pasted from Meet The Fockers. Instead of introducing fresh concepts and moving forward with witticisms, the writers have so desperately clung to the comic formula of sex quips, bodily function gags and risqué innuendo that made its predecessors successful, but, in this incarnation, falls short. There’s a boner scene where the phrase ‘dick attack’ is thrown around, projectile vomiting, enemas and the obligatory dinner table antics – this time with the appearance of a pet lizard, which inevitably

Luckily one man has the chops to provide a solution. PERTH WRITER’S FESTIVAL The Write Stuff The Perth Writer’s Festival is on at UWA from Friday, March 4, to Monday, March 7. Find out what’s on and when at perthfestival.com.au/ pwf. Bookings can be made through BOCS. The Perth Writer’s Festival has run, in its current incarnation as a part of PIAF, for five years now. Traditionally seen as the mustier, less-glamorous offshoot of the more flamboyant festival, the Perth Writer’s festival is in fact an important cornerstone in the Perth artistic community. Its chief function is as a celebration of new ideas, as well as their dissemination into wider society. Danielle Brenda is the brand new curator of this year’s festival, and she was quite emphatic on this point. “People should come because the Writer’s Festival is a real focus for thought and debate within the festival as a whole. People use words to discuss ideas and thoughts and it’s not just about literature but about all thought. We want to encompass people who blog or write for screen or song. People say the book is dying, but I would say that people use words to communicate and they are the best way of communicating. That’s what the Writer’s Festival is about. It’s about those ideas and it’s about what it is to be human and what it is to lead a good life.” As a consequence of this focus, Writer’s Festival events are not merely scheduled talks with various writers. Although definitely present as standard fare in festivals of this nature, the festival will also feature events catering to more combative tastes. Brenda has assured that “debates have also been scheduled. There will also be panel discussions. We want to involve the broader community. Again, the festival is about ideas and thought and what it means to live in a democracy and what the limits of that should be.” One of the prominent figures present in such a role at the festival is Tariq Ali, a well known and widely published public intellectual from the UK. His latest work, The Obama Syndrome, is described by Brenda as being “a critique on the foreign policy of the Obama Administration and their actions in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and in particular how not much at all has changed (since the Bush administration).” More traditional authors appearing as part of the festival include such luminaries as Annie Prue, author of Brokeback Mountain, and Jeff Lindsay, better known to the general population as the brains behind the hit series Australia’s highest circulating Street Press
Tariq Ali author of The Obama Syndrome features on the Perth Writer’s Festival lineup
Dexter, which has garnered a popular television series to boot. “The festival will also feature Kate Holden, who wrote In My Skin, a first person account of her life as a heroin addict and prostitute; Melina Marchetta, who wrote Looking For Alibrandi, which was a real ground breaking novel when it was released; Simon Armitage, who does little bonsai short stories full of pop culture, wit and humour; and Amistead Mopan, who is the author of a series of books chronicling the gay culture of San Fransisco.” All in all, this year’s Writer’s Festival promises to present a pleasant spread of writers and ideas cut from many disparate and varied cloths. There will be something for everybody, and the chance to be part of such an esteemed and plural society is certainly not one to be missed. _JOE LUI 29

LIVIN’ IT UP AT ORIGIN Nick Douwma aka Sub Focus has always been dubbed a rising star of the drum‘n’bass scene. 2010 has, however, undoubtedly seen him rise to the highest echelons of producers within the genre. With his debut eponymous album more than a year behind him and a newly conceived live show tearing up the UK, Sub Focus talks to TILMAN ROBINSON about changing musical direction, a new album, his live show and his return to Perth for this year’s Origin NYE. Nick Douwma is not an easy man to pin down. Our interview takes place at 1:45am GMT as he races from a club in Essex to DJ at London’s drum‘n’bass superclub, Fabric. Long time friend and colleague MC ID is at the wheel. These DJ dates come hot off the heels of an epic 22 date UK tour that introduced his live show to the world. One assumes touring as a DJ is easier than touring a full live show, so why bother? Is the live show better than DJing? “They’re different things,” Douwma explains. “When I do the live show it’s all my own material so it’s great to be able to play stuff by other people when I’m DJing. At the moment, I like the live show because I have so much control over it: the lights, the way it’s presented. It’s been a breath of fresh air for me. I started doing it only earlier this year.” Foregoing the example led by Pendulum, Douwma’s live show does not follow a formulaic ‘band’ format but rather a one man performance. Douwma explains this is a conscious decision based on the sound and styles of his music. “My tunes are quite synthetic and I’m quite into synthesized sounds,” he says. “So I wanted to do it in a way that is true to the way the music was made rather than getting a live drummer to try to play my crazy drum tracks.” Continued Page 32

SUBFOCUS If it isn’t a band then it begs the question: how is it live? The answer, as with so many things, lies in creative use of computer software and intelligent programming. “I basically dissected all of my tracks, all of the individual parts, and they’re all running through (computer software) Ableton Live so I’m able to take parts of one track and put it over the drop of another or I’m able to change bass lines,” he reveals. As for live manipulation, it’s a very technical process. “I’ve been running a lot of lines through a controller that is basically a motion sensor and I can control a lot of the synth sounds, sort of like a theremin. I try to do something that’s different from the way a band would play because obviously I can only play a few of things at a time. I might be playing a synth line at one time then changing the beat of another track, so I’m doing it in an electronic way as opposed to the way a band would.” It is this live show that will be performed at this year’s Origin NYE and Douwma is excited and apprehensive about the prospect.“This is the first time I’ve taken the show out of Europe so I’m pretty excited about that,” he muses.“I haven’t been to Australia with the album yet. It’ll be interesting to me to see the reaction. Such a lot has actually changed since the last time I came over.” Sub Focus’s last performance in Perth was at Origin NYE two years ago and Douwma
Sub Focus reveals that it is not only his performance style that’s changed but also his musical interests. “I remember the last time I played in Australia I was still playing actual acetate dubplates rather than CDs and vinyl and I was pretty much playing only drum‘n’bass at that point and that’s changed since then. I’ve opened up to a lot of different types of music and have been writing a lot of different types as well. I’m excited to see how that’s received in Australia, some of the more progressive stuff
I’ve been doing. “At the moment what seems to be working in the UK is playing a real mixture of styles in the same set going from drum‘n’bass to house music to dubstep. I’ll be interested to see how that goes down [in Australia].” With his debut album Sub Focus now over a year old, Douwma has forged ahead on the production of his new album. “When I was writing the first album, I felt a certain amount of pressure to speak to people that had been into my stuff for a while,” he says. “I was keen to make an album where a lot of the tracks would work well in clubs but with enough there to make it good home listening. With the new one, I want to push forward to be more about home listening. More ‘albumy’ than a club album.” After a string of high profile remixes and collaborations, Douwma’s interests have turned towards co-writing and producing songs. “I’ve had a lot of experience recently like writing for Example and some other pop artists which is stuff I’ve been doing alongside writing this album,” he explains. “It’s exciting times, I feel like a lot of doors are opening at the moment.” The new album is a long way off however and for now Douwma is content to take his live show as far as it can go. With Origin NYE being the only live show performance on his Australian tour, make sure you’re there to witness the spectacle. Miguel Migs
Miguel Migs has remixed the likes of BritneySpears,MacyGrayandLionel Richie.Thedeephouseproducerand DJ from the creative depths of San Francisco used to play guitar and grew up playing tunes in reggae bands. But you wouldn’t think it. TYSON WRAY talks to Migs, aka MiguelStewardabouthisinfluences, almost two decades in electronic musicandthebeautyofroadtesting.
In what has become a Boxing Day tradition, thousands descended upon the lush green surrounds of the Belvoir Amphitheatre for the 10th anniversary celebrations of Breakfest. There’s always something special about the Breakfest crowd; no meatheads, no pretenders, no agro, just a warm, friendly crowd having fun with their crew and this year was no exception. Yet something was definitely different- the music! Last year, electro house seemed to be the flavour of the day but this year it was all about dubstep. Everywhere you went there was no escaping it’s drawn out, down tempo bass which started to ruffle a few feathers amongst the crowd wanting to bust out to a banging break beat that rarely arrived. Local favourites Micah and Philly Blunt played a more down tempo set than usual and looked to be thoroughly enjoying the late afternoon time slot with the biggest crowd the tent pulled for the whole day. By 7pm, there was little space to be found on the terraces as beat boxing extraordinaire Beardyman took to the stage to a huge roar from the crowd. Exceptionally
talented and an extremely gifted entertainer, Beardyman enthralled the crowd with his unique performance; his inclusion on the line up a definite highlight for many. With an epic three minute intro, the Freestylers were building the suspense maybe a fraction too long but when the beats dropped it all appeared worth it but despite the promising beginning, the rest of their set was quite uninspiring. They were both quite wooden behind the decks and although throwing down tracks like Pendulum’s Fasten Your Seatbelt and Tarantula, the set was a very commercial collection that just fell flat on its face before petering out into a less than memorable conclusion. Unfortunately one of the clashes of the day was with Freq Nasty playing in the tent at the same time as the Plumps. Breakfest’s prodigal son still commanded an impressive crowd that loved every minute of the Freq’s ‘bass music’ as he laid down some seriously impressive bass lines that could’ve done structural damage to nearby buildings. Closing out the main stage was the ever inspiring Plump DJs who launched into an explosive set that captivated an arena full of enthusiastic party people. They played an electric mix of break beat, electro house and downright dirty bass which sent limbs flailing wildly wherever one could find some room to let loose. Showcasing some cranking tracks from their Grand Hotel label including their latest
Plump DJ’s release Light Fantastic, the Plumps were the definite highlight of the night and an absolutely brilliant way to end the day. As with previous events, this year’s Breakfest was superbly organised and thoroughly enjoyed by the masses, the only concern being the proliferation of dubstep; Perth it would appear just isn’t ready to let go of the breaks. _GLEN CANNING
Miguel Steward is a globetrotter. In the early ‘90s, the world renowned master of the decks was DJing for fun at parties. The sounds booming from the speakers at these parties were more along the lines of hip hop, dub, reggae and house music, all sounds that Steward grew up around. He hasn’t abandoned these sounds though, after all, his productions draw worldwide acclaim for the creative juxtaposition he uses to create such a distinctive sound. “Growing up, I was surrounded by everything from classic rock to blues to reggae, my parents were really into music, hippies who creeped around and went to every festival and they’d always take me along,” Steward laughs. ”Because of this, I’ve always taken a lot of inspiration from all kinds of music and I try to incorporate this into the creativity of my productions. Sometimes you’ll hear a lot of funk, soul and disco, other times you’ll hear rock, dub and reggae. I try and combine, mash and meld all of these influences in subtle ways in the music that I create. I don’t really listen to electronic or dance music exclusively. I just like writing and creating songs and the whole process, whether it be on acoustic guitar or making beats in the studio, it’s the entire process which I get so passionate and inspired about.” Coming from writing and producing music from the perspective of a band, Steward started experimenting with dance and house music by messing around with electronic music on keyboards. “Everything sort of progressed when I started to produce and create music in the mid ‘90s and I began to DJ a lot more professionally,” he recounts. “I started creating a lot of music for various record labels. From that point onward, I did more work and toured around the world and now 15 years later in 2010, I’m still involved in all aspects of music; writing, producing, DJing and always constantly working on new and exciting projects.” For the most part, Steward says his sets aren’t determined by the environment he plays in but rather crowd inspiration. “I basically like to play stuff that I like and choose my tracks very spontaneously depending on the mood and vibe that I’m getting from the crowd,” he says. “I like taking risks and playing new music that no one has heard, I always love road testing stuff that I’m working on and gauging the crowd’s reaction. It’s partially to keep myself inspired and entertained whilst entertaining the crowd. That’s always what I do if I’m playing at a festival in front of 20,000 people or a club with 100 people.” And he’ll be doing just that when he hits up Summadayze shortly. “I’ve been coming to Australia for the past 11 years. I come down every single year during your summer and it’s always a blast. People are nice, the weather is gorgeous and everyone has an open mind and just wants to have a good time. I’m really looking forward to coming back.” MIGUEL MIGS SUMMADAYZE SATURDAY, JANUARY 8 @ THE ESPLANADE Australia’s highest circulating Street Press

FLYING LOTUS
SALT’S BEST ALBUMS FOR 2010
Undeniably one of the most innovative and pioneering electronic artists of the past decade, TYSON WRAY talks to Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, one of contemporary music’s most illustrious beat makers ahead of his appearance in Perth this weekend.
NOT ALL ABOUT KANYE 2010sawthemusicindustrycontinue to evolve, and the concept of ‘the album’ become less important, particularly in the electronic realm, where music is dominated by those making club tracks, focussed on selling singles and EPs. There’s still something magic about a great album – it’s a snapshot in time of an artistandthereweremanystandouts. ALFRED GORMAN reminisces. It was a big year for dubstep, with the bass heavy sounds of Skream’s Outside The Box thinking just that, and exploring the boundaries, with some interesting collaborations. Shackleton was given free reign on his own FabricLive mix, Commix brought back old school, ‘intelligent’ drum’n’bass sounds on Call To Mind, and our own Pendulum took things to the next level, turning their back on the scene almost all together, to become the stadium rock beasts they are with Immersion. Techno and minimal house got exciting again, going back to its underground and experimental roots, with some welcome ambient sounds, and some truly exquisite albums. Bonobo’s Black Sands was a masterwork of soundscapey beats, down tempo variations, gorgeous vocals and exotic strings. Flying Lotus continued to as tonish with Cosmogramma, a mind bending concoction of sounds that is his most palatable yet. Holy Fuck’s Latin was another s t a n d o u t , w i t h i t s l o w k e y, s y n t h y experimentation, swirling psychedelia and chunky grooves. Trentemoller returned from the wilderness to give us Into The Great Wide Yonder; a very different, more organic album, still impressing fans with his considerable talent.
Some legends returned with fresh albums that stood up against their older material. Massive Attack’s big comeback, Heligoland was a cracking return to form that also saw the elder statesmen of trip-hop blow away at Kings Park. Damon Albarn again displayed his musical genius and vision with Gorillaz back to monkey around on Plastic Beach with a distinct theme, an abundance of interesting music and collaborators and one of the best live tours ever. The Chemical Brothers released Further, a great album that harks back to their earlier experimental, instrumental sound. In the indie crossover realm, LCD Soundsystem were again a hit with their emotional breakup album, This Is Happening. And a young band from Manchester, Delphic impressed with their energetic, New Order type sounds on debut Acolyte. On the hip hop front it was a good year with Big Boi of Outkast releasing his long awaited debut, proving to be as integral as Andre to the band’s success. The Roots outdid themselves again, producing possibly their best album to date with How I Got Over. And of course, Kanye West caused a stir with his big comeback My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, putting his music where his mouth is. Helped out by an A-grade list of collaborators, including Kid Cudi and Jay-Z, Kanye reworked Aphex Twin and overlaid a rant from Chris Rock along with a feature length, arthouse film soundtrack. It’s a complete package, transcending hip hop and his most ambitious to date. Imma let you finish yeah.
Following the release of his third album Cosmogramma, 2010 has seen Ellison’s dramatic rise to prominence skyrocket. Already synonymous with ground breaking electronic music following his first two releases; 1983 and Los Angeles, Cosmogramma has proven itself as Ellison’s most defining move yet. A meticulous and intricate production, the density and multilayering is seamlessly weaved demonstrating Ellison’s growth and development as an artist. And Ellison is more than happy with the album’s reception. “It’s been a great year with Cosmogramma,” he says. “This dream that I had, this idea that I had; it’s really touched some people. It’s really moved and inspired some people. It inspired my peers and people that I look up to and that’s a great feeling. Knowing that I created something that I was completely proud of and honest with, it’s really satisfying to know that I was ‘me’ to the fullest and that people really embraced it.” Dubbed as ‘the Jimi Hendrix of this generation’ by the illustrious Mary Anne Hobbs, Ellison is widely regarded as one of the most inspired and imaginative artists of modern day but the man himself is determined to keep his ego in check. “I just want to be Flying Lotus and do that the best that I can,” he says. “If you start thinking about all these other things, what people say and what people think about you, it really slows the work down. At the end of the day, I just want to be proud of the work that I’ve created and that’s all I’m really concerned about. “I try not to think at all and just enjoy being on my machines and making my music. It’s hard to explain. I feel that thinking about my music and getting heavily obsessive is what slows me down, it allows me to create a lot more stuff.” Although Ellison finds it difficult to articulate his creative processes, he is able to share the fundamentals of his current day performances, saying that those who have only heard his records may be surprised when they witness his live set.“I think the records are a little bit more cerebral than the show is,” he says. “The show is a party and it’s got a
Flying Lotus lot of high energy. Sometimes the records may seem like that, but I believe that they’re really headphone music.” Returning to Australia over the new year period for his third visit, Ellison’s performances have dynamically developed since his last appearance on our shores. An aurally stimulating experience, he promises this tour will carry the same essentials as his previous performances whilst showcasing his development as a performer. “It’s definitely always changing; it’s never the same show,” he says. “This time, I’m actually bringing along some musicians to play with me. It’s going to be way different from the last time I was in Australia. I’m also touring with The Gaslamp Killer and Hudson Mohawke which will be a lot of fun. It’s just going to be a really, really good party.” FLYING LOTUS BAKED NYE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31 @ THE BAKERY
BEARDYMAN NOW MORE THAN THE BEARD Darren Foreman, better known as Beardyman, is fiercely talented. The London funnyman is more than just the beat boxer he started out as. He’s an entertainer. And a bloody good one at that. Ask him about his beat boxing roots though and he doesn’t even flinch.“I don’t think I’d even say urban or beat boxing is where I’m at right now.”This guy is more original than Eminem during a stage battle and wittier than Steve Martin was in 1988. RK gets the lowdown.
Foreman is known for his beat boxing skills and use of live looping technology and despite saying this isn’t where he is right now, he does admit the beat boxing all started as a habit when he was about three years old. He didn’t really start seriously beat boxing, however, until he was 20 when he saw American beat boxer Rahzel M Brown perform.“He’s obviously on that urban vibe so it was hard for me to work out where I wanted to be,” Foreman says. “I haven’t come from an urban background so I thought dance for me was more where I was at. I focused on things like that at first; doing covers of well known songs and stuff. And sometimes when I went to a gig and did a show, I thought I might do some hip hop and some new stuff but I’ve always been one to make sure what I was doing was what I wanted as well as what the crowd wanted to hear.” Although Foreman states his current focus is dance music in its varied forms, he’s gone on to perform at both the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Montreal Comedy Festival. And not only this, his YouTube videos (some with a million or more hits) all of a sudden made him a marketable commodity, one that is uniquely creative and fiercely dignified. “I’m all about sonic manipulation technology and looping technology and improvisation,” Foreman says of his sound. “It keeps it fun for me and fun for the audience. I’m not one of these artists who does the same thing over and over. I’ve never had the time to be patient with doing the same thing twice. I’ve got too much ADD for that!” And if he isn’t a bona-fide star just yet, he probably should be. And an album should go some way to prove just that. “I’ve got my debut album coming out, there are songs without vocals; 34
Beardyman some are dubstep, some are drum’n’bass, some are IDM. But the ones that are songs - they’re the ones I’m never going to be performing exactly the same as before. I might do a harder version of one or a softer version of another but I’m always changing it up to try to keep it original not only for me but also for the crowd as well. “I think the music industry is comprised of several job markets. The performers are one part of that, whether you control your own destiny or some boy band or whatever. The fact remains that basically, if you want a career, you have to be different to other people. Sure you can get by emulating other people but you’ll never be a legend and the only people who history cares about are the innovators. “But whatever you do, whether it’s music or art you need to do it in a way that makes the best use of your abilities. I tried in the early days to pass myself off as a beat boxer that was hip hop focused. Being cool and being street is like a preoccupation. I could try to pass myself off as a hip hop artist but instead I prefer to emulate playfully rather than try to have an act. My adaptability is what makes me unique.” BEARDYMAN SOUTHBOUND SUNDAY, JANUARY 2 @ SIR STEWART BOVELL PARK, BUSSELTON www.xpressmag.com.au

Birds Of Tokyo are another of the year’s success stories with their self-titled album reaching #2 on the ARIA charts. RATATAT
A New York duo consisting of Mike Stroud and Evan Mast, Ratatat is an electronic rock band that begs to be seen live. The first band to ever perform at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, they released their fourth album, the creatively titled LP4, this past June. The album featured the single Drugs, which has a video clip that will make you think you’ve taken some sort of illicit substance. In addition to appearing at the Big Day Out on the Converse Essential Stage alongside the likes of Pnau, Sia, Edwarde Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and more on Sunday, February 6, they also play a headline show at Capitol on Monday, February 7. Fender - Blacktop guitars
BLACKTOP OF THE PILE After what seemed like centuries of waiting and pining, Fender’s all new Blacktop series is finally here in all of your favourite shapes: Jazzmaster, Jaguar, Telecaster and Stratocaster. Designed specifically for the modern player looking for that extra growl, the Blacktop series is perfect for rock, alternative, metal, punk and indie players thanks to its raw humbucking power. The Blacktop Telecaster HH is a nononsense dual-bucker Tele that’ll blow your mind without breaking the bank. Available in three colours (black, candy apple red and silver) with a black pick guard, the Tele also has some other tasty features like the 22 medium jumbo frets, alder body, maple neck with 9.5’’ radius all topped off with shiny polyester gloss and sleek chrome hardware. The Blacktop Jaguar comes in black or silver and features skirted black amp knobs, Adjusto-Matic bridge with anchored tailpiece, slinky 24’’ scale, and one lean and mean threeway toggle switch rather the usual barrage of Jaguar controls. The guitar is finished with gloss
urethame and nickel/chrome hardware. The close brother of the Blacktop Jag is the Blacktop Jazzmaster, which boasts a three-way toggle switch rather than the barrage of Jazzmaster controls. Available in both three colour sunburst and black, the guitar also features a whammy bar for all your vibrato and tremolo needs. Also featuring a whammy bar to go with its vintage style synchronised tremolo bridge is the Blacktop Stratocaster. Available in candy apple red, black and sonic blue, the guitar also features 22 medium jumbo frets, gloss urethane finish and nickel/chrome hardware. With a price of under $900 each, how can you go wrong with Fender’s Blacktop series range of electric guitars? The only tough decision is which of the four shapes will you choose? You can road test the Fender Blacktop series at Mega Music in Myaree, who are also having their post-Christmas sale this week. Contact them on (08) 9330 2777 or via their website at www.megamusiconline.com.au.
