The man who put the sex back into sax, Gerry Rafferty has sadly left the building. Born in Paisley, the Scottish songwriter kicked off his musical career as a busker on London’s Underground before pairing with fellow Scot, and now omnipresent comedian, Billy Connolly to form folk upstar ts The Humblebums. In 1972 Rafferty went on to form Stealers Wheel; a band that would crumble in 1975, but not before offering Rafferty’s first mega hit Stuck In The Middle (a song which would enter pop-culture immor tality in Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 cult flick Reservoir Dogs). But Stuck In The Middle proved only a mere taste of the über success that would befall Rafferty on the release of his 1978 solo album City To City; boasting a little number called Baker Street. While the origins of the infamous saxophone riff are still in contention, with Baker Street Rafferty completely reshaped popular music and paved the way for a sparkling new decade of sax-a-licious soft rock chart-toppers, which would (not always as graciously) eventually define the 1980s… and tragically give credence to a viral pandemic known as Kenny G. Some may say Rafferty has a lot to answer for, but we’re sure he’s resting easy in the tower of song. A string of albums through the ’80s and ’90s would maintain Rafferty a cultural force, albeit diminishing, but Baker Street would prove his defining legacy, reportedly netting him a cool £80,000 annually. In 2008 the Scotland On Sunday newspaper reported Rafferty had been unwillingly checked into St Thomas’ Hospital suffering a chronic liver condition – a symptom of his rambunctious reverence of the bottle – but would go on to release one defiant last album, Life Goes On in 2009. But by November 2010 that bold statement would prove a forlorn hope indeed, as Rafferty was again admitted to hospital suffering liver failure. He would hang on to see in 2011 but would take his final bow on January 4. He was 63 years of age. Thank you for the music Gerry.

FIRE IN THE SKY

The good folks at the City Of Perth have a bit of a party every year with a couple of hundred thousand of their closest friends and you’re on the guest list. That’s right, the annual tradition that is Skyworks takes place on Australia Day, Wednesday, January 26, on the Swan River foreshore and two free concerts are planned. Headlining the Too Solid Concert in the Supreme Court Gardens is one of Australia’s most successful indigenous performers, Christina Anu, and she’ll be joined by the Last Kinection, MC Optamus, John Bennett, celebrity chef Mark Olive presenting traditional Aboriginal cook ing demonstrations and more. Langley Park will host the Youth Zone with Philadelphia Grand Jury, Village Kid and Harlequin League. For information on this free event head to perth.wa.gov.au/ skyworks.

An Australian tour by The Waifs was once a regular treat for the band’s many fans, but with all members now living in the US and tending to family commitments, it is now a rarer pleasure. Good news, then, that with their new album, Temptation, due in early March, The Waifs will return to Australia for a full tour. Of course they’re hitting home turf, too. Catch them on Saturday, March 5, at the Old Broadwater Farm in Busselton; Sunday, March 6, at Castelli Estate in Denmark; Tuesday, March 8, at the Performing Arts Centre in Mandurah; Wednesday, March 9, at Fremantle Arts Centre and Thursday, March 10, at the Astor Theatre. I don’t think I’m anymore important than the other people on the road but it shits me to tears when people insist on plodding along in the right hand lane when people are trying to get past. Now before you make your assumptions reader 1) I’m not a bogan or a hoon, 2) I don’t drive a hoon’s car, 3) I’m not an aggressive driver and 4) I’ve never had an accident. I just want to get to my destination a little quicker than you Curtis. Here’s the thing; idiots like you are congesting our highways. As for road rules, the common sense rule says: stay in the left lane unless you want to overtake. Accidents are caused by idiots that can’t drive properly, not people that are in a hurry. There are plenty of festivals that give us a variety of music genres, true breaks fans go to Breakfest because we are passionate about our breaks. We don’t want to hear all electro and we certainly don’t want to hear dubstep. Perth’s breaks scene is dying because the DJs think they have to move with the times and all the young kids are being exposed to is an electro mix. We understand music has to evolve, but why can’t you keep it in the breaks realm? All you have to do is throw on an old skool breaks tune and watch the crowd go crazy! So many Perth crew that have been <c> Saw VII 3D fans of Breakfest since the beginning are so disappointed, they are talking about never going to Breakfest again, never going to see Plumps again. DAVID GUETTA All In A Dayze Work The Guetta (pronounced Ge-tta) story reads like a fairy tale: a young boy dreams of being a musician and takes himself on a journey to heights previously thought unimaginable. The man chats to RK ahead of his headlining slot at Summadayze on Saturday, January 8, at Perth Esplanade and Supreme Court Gardens. “It is something like that,” chimes the affable Frenchman, laughing. “I started in the music game when I was 13 – it was when I was practicing basically every day. Of course, soon it became a little bit more professional and by the time I was 15 or 16 I started organising parties in the basement and I would ask for $1 to get in.” Yet despite that success, Guetta remains as humble and down-to-earth as ever. He still sees himself as nothing more than a party DJ who is blessed to enjoy what he does – and make a living doing it. “What is funny,” he explains, “is that I have always loved doing my little edits and creating my own music – nothing has changed there. People talk about the success we had with Black Eyed Peas, Akon and Kelly Rowland – I mean these just came about by accident almost. I wasn’t really expecting these things to happen and I’m honoured and excited to work with artists like that. I mean Kelly came up to me at a club where I was playing at; Akon I met back stage

at a festival and from there we just decided to work together. We recorded Sexy Bitch in one night and from that Will.I.Am called me and that gave me even more new ideas.” This week – let ’s talk in weeks because that’s about how frequently he breaks another record – he released a new single with Rihanna to which he adds this: “It’s a blessing and a big honour for me. The song is doing really well I’m really excited about this. I’m also super excited about coming back to Australia again – the people are super friendly and to be playing there is a great feeling! “Obviously I’ll be playing the big records I’ve played this year but also a lot of new tracks I’ve produced and I’m still testing. I have a lot of tracks to test out and a lot of new music to give people that they have never heard. And if I have to mention someone I really love for me it’s Afrojack, so I’m really excited. Of course that’s what I’m saying right now – I’ll be mixing the records that people expect and know me for but I’ll

also be playing a lot of new stuff; versions that people might not know!” And for Guetta, the path to success and greatness is never complete. It’s an eternal journey, not a destination. “It’s never done, that’s the thing. There is always a new artist that is exciting and there is always someone

For me, I definitely don’t feel like I’ve done it all. I really feel like this is only the beginning of what we can do with music. There is a massive move into the dance music culture right now and getting huge artists backing you is an amazing experience so I’m very proud to be a part of all that.” Studio wise, the young lad is actually working on his next album – something he claims really needs to strike a balance between what he has been making and where he wants to go. “I’ve been making a lot of really big pop records and I’ve been producing a lot of DJ club tracks and that is important for me; probably next year I’ll put out some records that aren’t for the radio, just club records. Basically, I love music and I love crazy hypnotic grooves and beautiful harmonies. That’s what I’m always setting out to achieve.” Indeed, Guetta is also impressed with the move away from single-genre DJs who seemingly spend the whole night playing one style of music; a track that sounds like it’s on loop. “Absolutely! I’m seeing that happen right now in the music. I love so many different styles and it was always so ridiculous to see people almost being forced to pick one style. That was the way the business way there for a while and all the kids were eating what was being fed to them. Now with the access people have to music on the internet the artists and producers are really forced to think outside a little bit, because they have realised it’s not just about the music, it’s about having a good time as well!” And finally, the man is well chuffed about his imminent return to Australia is what is his second visit in less than a year. “Well firstly, I’m really excited to get back there because I love Australia. The people are so friendly there; sometimes you don’t realise this but it’s a really unique place where people are so nice to each other. Those festivals are so amazing and really some of my favourites, so it’s going to be a very special moment for me. It’s like freezing right now in Paris so to celebrate New Year where it’s summer is going to be amazing – it’s going to be like a whole week of partying! I look forward to seeing all my fans soon!”

THEE OH SEES Love The OC KRIS NEEDS

John Dwyer is one prolific mother humper, but says he’s Attitude Adjustment more of a titular genius. Thee Oh Sees frontman tries to convince MATTHEW HOGAN that he took drugs with Weird Famous British music writer, Al Yankovic ahead of the band’s appearance at Amplifier occasional punk player and questionable trance DJ this Saturday, January 8. Kris Needs has just issued the first in what he hopes will be a series of pre-punk compilations in Dirty Water The Birth Of Punk Attitude. He convinces MATTHEW HOGAN to put a safety pin through his nose. Thee Oh Sees

According to high brow culture magazine The New Yorker, John Dwyer is the “most reliable live performer of the year”. The bold claim comes just weeks ahead of Thee Oh Sees’ Australian tour and the frontman still doesn’t know how quite to take the compliment. “It’s me and Kanye West is my understanding,” he begins. “The parallels between me and KW are I’m sure limitless. “Oh man, I don’t know. I don’t even read The New Yorker, so I don’t even know really how to take that, but I guess it’s complimentary. The shows are good; we give it all the energy we have. Sometimes when you’re tired you get that little burst on stage and when it happens it feels good to us too, so we need a reliable crowd too I suppose.” The band is even more reliable in the studio as they released over 10 studio albums and a plethora of EPs and 7’’ singles in their 13 year history. 2011 is set to see not one but two albums follow up last year’s opus Warm Slime.“Yep, on April 1st, we release Castlemania,” Dwyer reveals. “I am a titular master – I don’t know about the quality of my songs, but title wise, they’re always great I think.” He says the album will feature three obscure cover songs and be released on double vinyl. “I’ve done it all myself, but there are guests appearances from people like Ty Segall’s on it and

Brigid [Dawson] from my band is on it,” he offers. “But I’ve also been doing a lot of home recording this year as well and releasing a few of those under the Oh Sees moniker as well, just because it’s more convenient I suppose. This one is a pretty fried, summery pop record. It’s a little poppier than Warm Slime probably. It’s got strings and stuff on it. It’s got tonnes of instrumentation. It’s a pretty busy record, yet incredibly homemade sounding. And we’re going to be doing another full band one in February.” A highlight of the band’s busy 2010 was being invited to play the Godspeed! You Black Emperor-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead, England. “It was fantastic,” Dwyer gushes. “I got to see the Country Teasers perform, who are one of my favourite acts in the world and Chris Corsano playing with Flowers, which is like drums and crazy old Japanese traditional instrument which sounds kinda like an electrified banjo and Daniel Higgs and Deerhoof and even a moment of Weird Al Yankovic – it was alright!” Surely Weird Al is the type of guy who should be playing more festivals.“Oh yeah,” Dwyer agrees, “we did e together, it was pretty fun…” Really? “No, not really, but you can print that if you like,” he laughs, “but I don’t know if I want Weird Al on my case for lying about him though!”

Known for his writings on punk music from the ‘70s onwards and biographies of Primal Scream, Joe Strummer and Keith Richards, but hopefully not so much for his 1992 club hit Sugar Daddy with Secret Knowledge, Kris Needs has just released his ode to pre-punk attitude in the two disc set Dirty Water. Named after LA band The Standells’ 1966 hit, Needs tells the story of the snotty garage punks. “The Standells made a couple of records that were kinda pop and then something happened and they just got really snarly,” he informs. “But the song is actually about where they live. It’s got something to do with the river that goes through Boston. When I had a punk band in 1976, we used to do that song. Every track is on there for a reason – even if it’s so stupid as my own punk band later covering a track.” With the likes of Gene Vincent (“his band was probably wilder than any of the punk bands”), The MC5 (“the top five influential punk bands”) and the band that introduced him to punk (Mott The Hoople) on the set, Needs says he set out to find the tracks that pre-date punk and influenced the major musical movement of the mid-‘70s. “I think the most recent track was the Culture one [Two Sevens Clash] right at the end, which was late ’76,” he says. “I don’t think any of the others are beyond that year. I didn’t want to have any of the others from the actual punk time because I trying to show the roots and

birth and start of the attitude and the people that have been doing it for years before. I was trying to show that that energy wasn’t a new thing when The Clash appeared or the Pistols appeared. That was kinda my reason for doing it, which is why I thought that that attitude extended beyond the people you expect to find on compilation like that, like Sun Ra, who pressed up his own records and sold them at gigs so he could play the next gig.” It wouldn’t be much of a punk compilation without an Australian appearance and Needs selected The Saints’ iconic single I’m Stranded – a song which predates any releases by those British punk bands. “I remember when that record came out – a few import copies of the single came into the country and at that point, none of our bands had released any singles,” he says. “So the Sex Pistols and The Damned had not yet released theirs, but we’d had the Ramones album, and I’m Stranded had turned up and that was it. I’m Stranded came in from Australia and we thought, ‘What the hell’s going on over there!’ Even now that track sounds amazing. The Saints came over shortly thereafter because this single got quite a few reactions – it got single of the week in one of the music papers and did really well on import and they got signed to EMI. I think EMI just lost the Sex Pistols and they wanted to get another band. It was great that that happened.”

MILLENCOLIN See A Penny Swedish punks Millencolin hit Perth as part of Soundwave, playing WA on Monday, March 7. MIKE WAFER phones in with guitarist Erik Ohlsson ahead of the massive tour. With 2010 marking the 10 year anniversary of their Pennybridge Pioneers record, Millencolin have been touring the world and elsewhere of late. While that is nothing new for the band, some of the destinations have been, with Central America now ticked off the band’s bucket list. But with so much new stuff going on has there been any time to reflect on the anniversary or, indeed, on a colourful career in general? Guitarist Erik Ohlsson explains: “When you do something all the time you get used to reflecting on it too. I always appreciate what we’ve got. I’m super stoked because we’ve got to do it for so long that it feels natural, in a way. In the future when we’ve quit the band, looking back on it will seem unrealistic because when you’re living it the whole time it’s kind of hard to reflect on it. ”When you meet people from school or whatever, all they want to talk about is this kind of stuff, but I am bored out of my mind talking about Millencolin (laughs). I want to just talk about an old teacher or something, but it always ends up in the Millencolin conversation and I’m like ‘here we go again’.” But Ohlsson understands that people

are only interested because it is interesting, and, not surprisingly, the topic of touring is always a favourite. Look ing back over the band ’s evolution, Ohlsson remarks that touring – or more appropriately coming back from touring – got easier to deal with. “Back in the day when we first started touring it was very hard to handle the contrast of being on tour and then being back home again. You know, going to the store, cooking your own meals... just being a regular guy was really, really hard because after being out on tour it was just completely unrealistic. Over time you’re able to switch yourself between ‘touring mode’ and ‘home mode’, but back in the early days you would wake up in the middle of the night – on tour or at home – and not know who you were or where you were (laughs). But you learn how to get used to it. Now I have a home and a regular life, but also can tour and be that person as well, so I’m really lucky and grateful for everything. It doesn’t get boring.” Nor does he allow himself any time to get bored. As much as guitarist Erik Ohlsson has helped shape the music of Millencolin, perhaps

For as much as it was Millencolin’s music that saw them evolve into one of the most influential bands of the skate punk genre, it was also how they looked. Par tly explaining their massive success in Australia, Millencolin looked like the scene they came from, and right down the band’s logo, Millencolin’s connection to skate culture translated perfectly over to surf culture, and that was about all it took to seal the deal. For Ohlsson, the role as band graphic designer was one he unknowingly spent most of his early life getting ready for. “I was always painting growing up, and took special art classes in school,” he says of his beginning as an artist. “I’ve kept that alive as graphic design, or photography, or something creative on that side of things. I started my own company on the side from Millencolin, so that’s what I am doing and will definitely be doing after Millencolin in the future or whatever. Bands don’t last forever as a career, so you can’t take it for granted.” Especially considering that, as Millencolin’s graphic artist, Erik Ohlsson has complete artistic freedom to help along his vision. “I can do whatever I want with Millencolin because I am in charge, but over the years I developed a bit of a formula for Millencolin because I don’t want it to look completely different each time. I want it to look Millencolin, which is the standard I have set over these years. It’s fun to get new jobs to try out completely different stuff and new techniques, but with Millencolin it is locked into something, which I think is important so people can relate to both the music and the graphics.” Which is exactly what happened. As a band, Millencolin provided the soundtrack to a certain culture at a certain time, and even though it is no longer that time, those same people still exist and are still Millencolin fans. This more than anything resonates with Ohlsson and fuels him as an artist. “I always feel best when I have several projects running around in my head. When I go to sleep at night I am always thinking ‘how am I going to make this graphic?’ or ‘how am I going to do this thing in a song?’ and even when I walk my dog it’s what is going through my head. It’s just always a part of me.” 18

Seminal is a word that gets thrown around too often but when it comes to these English punk rockers the moniker couldn’t be more apt. Wire may not have always sold a truckload of records but their influence cannot be denied. They were central to the post punk movement, influencing Fugazi and are Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard’s favourite band. Their first Australian tour and a new album makes 2011 a big year for a band that have been kicking around on and off since 1976. It has been difficult to pigeonhole the band as they have changed dramatically from one album to the next, but with Red Barked Tree they appear to be consolidating by offering a little something for everyone who has been along for the journey so far. Red Barked Tree opens up sedately enough with the hummable Please Take showing off pop sensibilities before the UK veterans delve into the meandering and atmospheric Adapt and then shake things up with the type of fuzzy punk that used to be the band’s bread and butter in Two Minutes. While Red Barked Tree may not be as challenging as some of Wire’s other releases, there is enough sonic experimentation to keep fans interested and some cracking songs to boot.

Pop-punk-indie hipsters Matt & Kim are so gosh darned cute they make me want to puke. Cute lovers in real life, Kim plays drums to Matt’s keys and vocals. Their cute music videos for their cute songs have involved them getting nekkid and arrested in New York’s Times Square and squeezing their cute little bodies into cute little spaces. Cute cute cute, barf barf barf. Sidewalks, the Brooklyn couple’s third album, is, unsurprisingly, heavy on the cute. Whether it’s the Pet Shop Boys-esque pizzicato synthetic strings and marching beat of Where You’re Coming From, the robo-bounce glee of Hammond B and electronic clap accompaniment on Block After Block or the syncopated calypso chorus of Ice Melts, listening to this album without smiling and sighing contentedly is impossible. The inherent energy of the record makes it easy to see how Matt & Kim have built an increasingly strong live reputation since their inception six years ago. From the strong offbeat accentuation that dominates most tracks, to the sing-a-long “Oh-ay” anthemic chanting in the chorus of AM/FM Sound, this music begs to be paired with good times spent in good company. Despite some setbacks, Sidewalks is frivolous, feel-good fun that is particularly... um... cute. _ANDREW GEEVES

Named in honour of Californian garage god Sean Bonniwell of the Music Machine, whose face is emblazed on the CD and tray, Unprofitable Servant makes good on the reductive premise of Melbourne trio The Bonniwell’s name. Demonstrating a deep understanding and irony-free love of dysfunction, their scrappy psych-rock revivalist ethos encompasses the expected genre worship, none the more present than on three covers – a smouldering iteration of Bad Seeds (originally rendered by Teenage Fanclub), a scraggly, pared-down cover of the Cannibals’ We’re Pretty Sick, and the boozified churning Louie Lou-aah - a discursive take on The Kingsmen’s seminal garage anthem Louie Louie. Yet each of these renditions lacks the sonic violence and sense of unbridled brutality of their originals. The trio fare a little better when attention is turned to the crafting of their own tunes, uncorking a handful of fine singles, with I Don’t Need You Know More and Soda Pressing being the best of the bunch. But even during their most inspired moments, simply put, there’s no danger in The Bonniwell’s game; they’ve made a safe, if frayed, psych-rock album that bristles and pops with flashes of brilliance, yet never ignites into the fullblown firestorm these talented musicians are quite obviously capable of creating.

If you’re not familiar with The Damned Things, they are somewhat of a punk rock supergroup, comprising members of Every Time I Die, Fall Out Boy and Anthrax. I know what you’re thinking; “Awesome, right?” Well, kind of. In their own right, the three bands that these guys all come from are pretty awesome. It’s just when you throw them all together, something is lost. It’s like, Superman is cool. Spiderman is cool. Batman is cool, but I’m not too sure that Super Spider-Bat Man would be all that great. Okay, well maybe that would be kinda cool. The problem is that with Keith Buckley at the helm, you cannot help but think that The Damned Things are just a watered-down, commercialised version of Every Time I Die. Essentially, that’s what this sounds like, because the catchy parts aren’t as catchy as Fall Out Boy, and the heavier bits don’t compare to Anthrax or Every Time I Die. Had this record been released by an unknown band, the perception of it would likely be different, but you cannot help but think that the sum of its members should see The Damned Things make a much greater impact in an upward direction, rather than simply moving sideways. _GEORGE GREEN

Pop quiz, hot shot: think of the greatest musical anomaly you can. If you answered “Swedish musician singing folky, nature-reference-riddled, wistful Americana tunes whose simple sounds belie their true complexity”, you’ve done pretty well – or, after two full-length albums and one five-track EP, you’ve already become a fan of The Tallest Man On Earth. Lilting melodies and tales of heartbreak over twangy guitar may not readily be associated with Kristian Matsson’s Swedish background, sure, but he isn’t going to let that inhibit his particular style of self-expression. Poignant and epigrammatic, Matsson’s lyrics also offer something of a synopsis of his latest offering. Over the course of five confessional tracks, Matsson exposes the listener to the weird beauty to which he is subjected – hoping, it seems, that they are the omniscient confidante for whom he yearns; or in effect forcing them to occupy this position. Luckily, it’s a nice position to occupy. The near-breaks of the morning voice in which he sings convey a raw clarity of emotion, regret and solemnity that’s embraced rather than shied away from. The strength of his melodies and lyrics calls for nothing more than muted electric or quietly-picked acoustic guitar accompaniment, and he knows it.

The previous album by The Decemberists was a weighty beast! It was a rock opera that saw Margaret fall in love with a shape shifting forest dweller and the unfolding story that accompanies it. After such an epic release, Decemberists head honcho Colin Meloy has taken an about face for the band’s sixth album. The usually cerebral writing of Meloy is toned down as The King Is Dead mines from the songwriter’s early influences. Surely the album title is a tip of the hat to The Smiths, and the more direct and simplistic approach to the tunes is a direct result of Meloy’s passion for the earlier work of R.E.M. The direct pop of Down By The Water is given an authentic nod by the addition of Peter Buck on guitar and also contains one of the many appearances from the silky voiced Gillian Welch. Despite the calibre of guests there is no doubt who is the star here as Meloy offers some of his finest efforts in the spritely Calamity Song, menacing This Is Why We Fight and the restrained January Hymn. The King Is Dead shows that even for bands as grandiose and ambitious as The Decemberists, there comes a time when less can indeed be more – even if only briefly. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

Producing some of the most entertaining music in Australia, the incredibly energetic and talented Oh Mercy has been setting stages alight in Melbourne for quite a while now, with a healthy range of support slots (Temper Trap, Sally Seltmann, Crowded House), festival appearances and headlining shows in 2010, seeing this sweet-natured band fast become the indie-pop band to watch on the east coast. Originally released as a two track 7” vinyl single, selling out in just under two weeks, Keith Street has recently been repackaged as an EP, featuring the titular single along with three previously unreleased stellar b-sides, a premeditated move no doubt paying welldeserved dividends for the supremely talented quartet. Warm and elegant, careful but not calculated, songwriter and frontman Alexander Gow clearly has an ear for classical pop sounds, but despite its scaled-back simplicity, this endearing little record is not slight or a throwaway in any sense. Cruising through pockets of melancholy and mayhem, tenderness and tragedy, sonic landscapes shift around behind Gow across the length of the album, with elements of pure indie pop, old timey slideguitar country, rattling tin-alley piano, and light rock adding to this evocative, sporadically inspired and resoundingly enjoyable record. _JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD

Bursting onto the scene after taking the gold in 2009’s Triple J Unearthed High Competition Ballaratborn boys Howl quickly established themselves as a name to know in the national punk scene with their brutal smash-hit single Blackout. Continuing to be a serious force in Australian street punk, this fiery four-piece is back (they never actually left to be honest) with a brand-spanking-new EP Brothers In Violence, an abrasive and hooky four-track release which is certain to place them firmly in the annals of Australian punk history. Throwing down old-school punk, fast, hard and full of attitude, Howl is completely unapologetic and unabashed, keeping the pop rock melodies at bay and delivering a traditional punk stance which is readily accessible to the young punks of today, but still holds onto the spirit of their old-school rock forefathers.

The fact that Kid Cudi got picked up by Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music franchise, skyrocketed to fame on the back of an Italian dance duo’s rehashing of one of his debut’s lesser tracks, and cemented his place in hip hop royalty through countless appearances on Kanye’s G.O.O.D Friday cuts really peeves some people. But what does keep people coming back to Cudi – even as he takes on ‘60s psychedelic road trips (the video for Weezeresque Erase Me is a must), audibly snorts lines on tracks and generally couldn’t give a fuck about what is popular or commercial – is that the man knows how to write good music. Admittedly, MOTM II is slightly more indulgent than the first part (and suffers for this), but amidst all the loathing, self-interest, intense reflection and drug references, the album still produces gems of songwriting and melody like Revofev, Mr Rager and Mojo So Dope. At best, Cudi’s sophomore is a haunting sonic portrait of what hip hop fame and fortune means in the 21st Century. At worst, it’s an egotistical experiment in recording and distributing secret teenage diary entries. Thankfully, there’s just enough more good than bad to hint at Cudi’s future potential.

King Crimson had only been together for nine months when they drew on such influences as The Moody Blues and latter day Beatles to create the five-song epic In The Court Of The Crimson King – thus practically inventing the genre of prog. While prog has a dirty name, and deservedly so in many cases, Crimson’s debut has stood the test of time and it’s dramatic opener 20th Century Schizoid Man has made it’s way to MTV and commercial stations recently thanks to it being heavily sampled on Kanye West’s recent single Power. But Kanye didn’t even sample the best bit, which belongs to a jazz breakdown consisting only of a snare drum and a saxophone. The impeccable timing shown here proves that these dudes were forward thinkers, and the sheer heaviness and distorted vocals was years ahead of their time and before even Black Sabbath released their first album.

In 2008, I named Underoath’s Lost In The Sound O f Separation my most disappointing record of the year. It was full of Jesus-loving, Auto-tune toting, mechanically structured garbage, with drummer / melodic vocalist Aaron Gillespie being the main culprit. With Gillespie’s departure from the band last year, finally Underoath could get back on the path of exploration that they were previously on. The result is Disambiguation, an album that picks up where the brilliant Define The Great Line left off, albeit without Gillespie’s annoying whiny vocals. Disambiguation is the record that typical Underoath fans will hate, primarily because it’s good, and it focuses on one distinct goal; challenging, thought-provoking heavy music, without clichéd compromise. Vocalist Spencer Chamberlain has really stepped up to the plate on this record, with his heavier vocals showing much improvement, while he is also able to provide melodic, non-gay sounding vocals that Gillespie was never able to bring to the table. And, thank fuck, they’ve completely toned down the god-bothering lyrics. All of these reasons, along with their new focused direction is why Underoath have gone from being my most disappointing band in 2008, to producing Disambiguation, a record which came in at number nine on my top 10 of 2010 list. _GEORGE GREEN Australia’s highest circulating Street Press

The chattering classes howled in despair at Hey Hey It’s Saturday’s return to TV screens last year, but somebody sent the ratings through the roof. If you were among them, you might remember a time before anything about Australia was considered chic, when the most exotic night out was the RSL Chinese and boutique beer meant you bought a case on the way to pick your missus up from the hairdresser. You might have come home that night and watched any number of TV shows that are now so dated and kitsch they can’t be anything but cool. Variety was the king of the airwaves, and a few big names ruled Aussie TV. Graham Kennedy kicked the whole movement off back before TV was even colour, and he returns in the second series of Coast To Coast. Just as Australian as a meat pie was the (American, ironically) Don Lane, who hosted one of the country’s most loved talk and entertainment shows. Or maybe fluff isn’t your taste and you get more out of educational viewing. If so, the bearded, khakis and boots-wearing Harry Butler was prepared to climb any tree, wrestle any creature into submission and make sure he put it back where he found it for your biological appreciation. He’s the slightly unhinged Uncle who lived in the country we all wish we had.

By running Anton’s story thread parallel to that of the two boys, director Bier adds a needed layer of complexity that makes the audience rethink their own moral certainties. The film presents no easy answers, only difficult questions: do the same ethical assumptions apply in both rural Denmark and war-ravaged Africa? Can violence ever be used for the greater good? What do we do when our philosophical convictions fail to encompass practical realities? It can be pretty heavy going, but the nuanced characters and excellent performances carry the audience through any stretches where the film threatens to become bogged down under the weight of its own thematic ambitions. In A Better World is a mature and thought provoking work from a world-class filmmaking talent. After making her American debut with the uneven and somewhat melodramatic Things We Lost In The Fire, it’s heartening to see Bier return to form on more familiar ground, and there’s every chance that we’ll see her at the podium come Oscar time.

Black Swan

Directed by Darren Aronofsky Starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey It makes perfect sense that Darren Aronofsky, (The Wrestler, Requiem For A Dream), one of the finest of the current crop of American directors, would make a film about the price of perfection. As an artist, there’s no doubt that it’s something that he must struggle with; the personal sacrifices necessary to attain greatness. In the character of Nina (Portman), a driven ballerina desperate to land the lead role in a production of Swan Lake, he has the perfect vehicle with which to explore how the sublimation of the personality in the service of art can have terrible, even damning consequences. It’s heady stuff, and Portman excels in a role that is not only central to the film, in many ways it is the film. As the story progresses and Nina’s rivalry with new dancer Lily (Kunis) progresses, it becomes apparent that much of the film is subjective, taking place within Nina’s fragile and increasingly damaged mind. Exactly how much is never quite made clear, but as hallucination mounts on hallucination, and the film becomes more and more surreal we come to understand that what are seeing is the self-destruction of a mind from the inside. It’s the relationship between Nina and Lily that drives the film, and though we might expect great acting from Portman by this stage of the game, it’s Kunis who really surprises with

You’ve produced working class films like Candy and $9.99, what now draws you to making films concerning grand historical figures? Well as a producer you’re looking for the most interesting story you can find, these things aren’t planned, you come across an idea for a project, whichever area they come from, real life, novels etc. With The King’s Speech it was just a great story. The historical context certainly adds to the gravitas, but the film’s so much more than the setting.

I see The King’s Speech as a great love story between two men, was this love the greater theme for you or was it the battle within each person to overcome themselves? That’s an interesting question, the friendship enabled the King to overcome his personal battles, the relationship allowed him to triumph, so the two themes really run parallel. The King hinted that he only has power because the people believe it; do you have an opinion regarding the validity of royalty in the modern world? From the power-coupling of ’90s heartthrobs Leo and Claire in Baz Luhrman’s smash-hit movie Romeo + Juliet, to Such Twe e t S o r r ow , t h e R o y a l S h a k e s p e a r e Company’s retelling of the Romeo & Juliet story on Twitter, Shakespeare’s infamous tale of star-crossed young lovers is undoubtedly the most continuously reinvented of all his works - but as Paige Newmark, the artistic director of Shakespeare WA attests: a balance must be struck between these newer iterations and theatrical productions evoking yesteryear. “Although audiences from the Elizabethan Age to the present cherish Romeo & Juliet as one of the most beloved plays of all time, there are always some people who will argue that Shakespeare’s original texts aren’t relevant today, and there are others who argue that modernising his stories is not ‘real Shakespeare’. Deciding how to stage one of Shakespeare’s plays is a tenuous venture – either way, it’s a losing battle.” A f t e r l a s t y e a r ’s p s y c h e d e l i c ‘60s-soaked radical retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew, this summer’s annual Shakespeare In The Park p ro d u c t i o n h a s fo u n d t h e international Shakespearean tackling the eternally popular romance of the young Romeo and his Juliet in a more traditional manner. Staged in its original Renaissance setting of Italy in 1600, the hot blood is set to stir in Newmark’s dark revival of The Bard’s tricky tragedy of flirty, street-fighting teenagers disastrously caught up in the double trauma of real love and their parents’ murderous small-town rivalries. “Although there is a perception that audiences are more apt to modern retellings, I think there is a place for all different adaptations. I see the newer interpretations as important in changing people’s attitudes towards Shakespeare; because of the widespread popularity of some of these modern adaptations, for a lot of people [watching Shakespearean theatre] is no longer an i n t i m i d a t i n g o r s c a r y e x p e r i e n ce, b u t

More Than Club Music 2010 was a banner year for Berlin electronic duo Booka Shade, with their fourth album More earning unanimous critical acclaim – not to mention a tour schedule packed with headlining slots at major festivals and sold out shows worldwide. JOSHUA HAYES speaks with Arno Kammermeier about the year that’s been. After spending most of 2010 touring, beginning with a headlining slot at Future Music Festival, Booka Shade travelled through Europe, the States and Asia. Now, they’re coming back to wrap up a year on the road at Big Day Out. “It was a very rewarding year, a very successful year, I’m very happy now,” says Kammermeier, who plays drums in the duo and is joined by keyboardist Walter Merziger. “It’s the end of the year, so you look back a little bit and you reflect on what happened, and it couldn’t be better.” A high point was the May release of More, an album 16 months in the making. “It wasn’t like we were in the studio for 16 months of course,” Kammermeier says.“We always write songs, we constantly work on music, we have a portable studio with us based on a laptop. A lot of the songs were written somewhere on this planet in a hotel room or backstage.”

Using this technique, Booka Shade have started working on their next album, although Kammermeier says it won’t be released before 2012 but there will be a few EPs and singles to whet fans’ appetites. “Some of the stuff you may hear at Big Day Out may be ideas of what’s coming out as a single later on, this is what we use the DJing for, to check out which tracks work and then release them as a single,” Kammermeier reveals. While their live show has received considerable praise (rated fifth best live act in a reader’s poll conducted by Resident Advisor magazine), Kammermeier is sure punters will enjoy their DJ set.“We have a lot of special remixes for the DJ show, remixes we can’t play,” he says. “We just finished preparing a lot of our own remixes and special mixes of Mandarine Girl, Body Language and In White Rooms for Big Day Out. This is interesting for us because it gives us the opportunity to again try out something new with our songs and push them forward and always come up with a new angle or bring out new colours of the songs.” And, while Kammermeier describes their upcoming performance as a DJ show, the term is a tad misleading. In addition to the requisite turntables and laptop, Merziger will be manning a range of synthesisers and effects pads along with a visual show set to the music. “It wouldn’t be enough for us to just mix two tracks, there’s got to be more for us, and more to explore,” Kammermeier says of the show. When they were last in town it was for a live performance, which consisted of Kammermeier on drums and Merziger on keyboards. It’s a lineup that has been in place since the pair first started collaborating 25 years ago. “We met a school band 25 years ago or so when we were kids, and we realised that we wanted to do something together as musicians,” Kammermeier says. BOOKA SHADE “The funny thing is if you would see pictures of us at the age of 16/17, when we started to play in groups, basically it’s the same set up that we have today; I play the drums, Walter plays the keyboard, and of course it looks a bit different nowadays but it is basically the same idea, the idea from the very beginning seemed to work, it just took a long time over the years to get to the festival stages and to make it a really big show.” The years the group spent working together enabled them to develop a unique sound that disregards fickle club trends. ”We simply can’t do it any different,” Kammermeier says.“Walter and I, we both said it seems like we managed to create our own sound universe, and we live in this own universe and it’s sometimes even a little bit detached from what happens in the clubs but we don’t mind as long as people hear the music and they realise in which context they can hear it, be it at home or in the car. “It gives them the feeling of club music but many times it’s much more than club music, you know? It has the feeling of the club but it adds a lot of levels many times, emotional levels, and this is what we want to continue, and I think this is a trademark of Booka Shade.” Kammermeier adds that the duo debated releasing songs like Body Language and Mandarine Girl, which proved to be two of their biggest hits, concerned that they would

Booka Shade be too difficult for DJs to play. “We’re not the greatest A&Rs when it comes to our own music but you can only do what you think is right and what you love and then hopefully some people will join in and like the same thing,” he say. 2011 will see the group taking a well deserved breather from touring, although, speaking from Berlin as the pre-Christmas blizzards froze Europe, Kammermeier still sounds very keen to hit the road. “I’m so much

ARMIN VAN BUUREN NO MIRAGE

Despite having amicably parted with partner-in-crime Stephen Fasano, Vito Deluca is still a pilot-in-command. His essential disco sound is as lush and fluid as it is blissful and it’s nice to know that the good sound is around to be enjoyed despite the split. RK talks to Deluca about plans past and present and his imminent return to Australia for Summadayze.

Armin van Buuren is now a bona fide, global trance music phenomenon. There is no disputing it. He has won more awards, sold more records, played to more people and broken more hearts than probably any DJ on earth, save the odd outlier (Tiesto). But make no mistake, this man is a machine; an institution. RK talks to him on the eve of his return to Australia.

The story goes that Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca, the Italian/Belgium duo that created Aeroplane met when Deluca had a record store in Belgium years ago. Deluca was producing music at the time and didn’t have any contacts. When the boys met, they both knew they could help each other out. And indeed, coming from Belgium has its benefits. It is the perfect place for immersing oneself in electronic music. Deluca is in total agreement. “Belgium is a great place for this music,” the Italian chimes. “The music that inspires me the most is probably nu-beat. It has a slightly slower BPM and those catchy bass lines. It’s funny too, there are lot of people like Soulwax and other people from Belgium that I didn’t know were from Belgium.” Deluca is also inspired and influenced by music which he categorises as “pretty old” but then elaborates to say it’s mainly ‘70s and ‘80s stuff. “Since I was six, I’ve had keyboards and things,” he adds. “I’ve been at music all my life.” But recently, there have been some shifts in the musical direction of Aeroplane. A difficult period six months ago saw the boys go their separate ways. Despite this, Deluca wanted to continue with the outfit. “As long as we’re [Deluca and Fasano] doing the dance music thing, we bring the whole structure and that sort of thing but when we started working on the album, Stefan couldn’t find his place anymore as I was playing a lot of instruments and I didn’t want to do that on my own,” Deluca says.“So we basically realised we wanted different things. I kept Aeroplane because mainly I wrote the record and he went on to start something new.” Deluca is now on the back foot and is taking some time to promote the record, We Can’t Fly, until March next year.“I’m working on a new EP but also I’m not going to work on as many remixes as I have in the past,” he reveals. “I really keep only the vocals and build around them so for me a remix is like a whole new track. I figured out in the end I would rather do something for myself. So around mid 2011, I’ll do more Aeroplane stuff.” And Deluca has already got a bit of an

Aeroplane idea about what this new record will entail. “The new album is going to be what I’ve done already,” he says. “I don’t wake in the morning and think ‘I’m going to do this or that’. Something or nothing can come out; something hip hop or pop comes and sometimes disco or whatever. I’m actually more comfortable with stuff that isn’t dance music, it’s a specific skill. I’m more of a composer than a producer so I’m trying to make the music secondary. If it’s a good song, it’s still a good song. I write a good song.” But for now, it will be about dance music when he hits Perth this weekend for Summadayze. “I’ve got my record collection ready and I’m doing some tracks and edits, some old disco stuff and anything really that is really danceable,” he says. “I know I’ll be playing to some pretty big crowds so ultimately my DJ set has to appeal to a lot of people. I hope the fans enjoy it.” AEROPLANE SUMMADAYZE SATURDAY, JANUARY 8 @ THE ESPLANADE

Armin van Buuren has been voted #1 in DJ Magazine’s annual Top 100 list of the most popular DJs in the world for the last four years in a row. But the man himself hasn’t let stardom get to him.“It’s very simple really,” Buuren says of his art.“It might not be the romantic answer that you are looking for but for me, music is just like hearing that one record. It makes you go wow and then it becomes about sharing that wow feeling. In every sense, we are all DJs. I don’t know, though if you hear a song on the radio that you haven’t heard before and ask about the track in the record store, then buy the album, you possess those DJ elements. And then a friend comes around and you relay that enthusiasm.” And that’s what it’s always been about for Buuren, being happy and making sure others are having a good time. “That is the essence of what I do, maintaining that enthusiasm,” he says. “The most important thing for me is to continue having fun in what I do; I don’t care too much about being successful although I know how lucky I have been. I actually have a law degree so I knew I could always stop this and do something else. I’m not here to be the world’s number one DJ, that isn’t my main goal. Of course you strive to do well and I think I can prove that by saying when I did Blue Fear in 1996, I didn’t jump on any bandwagons. I just did what I enjoyed.” Currently, Buuren is getting ready to bring his equipment back to Australia for some selected dates around the country (including a nine hour set in Melbourne on New Year’s Eve) which means you can expect to hear everything that’s worth listening to in the EDM space right now. Likewise, you can bet the Dutch master is amped. “Playing for Australian crowds pumps the adrenaline right up,” he says. “I know it’s not particularly healthy and I wouldn’t recommend anyone trying it – especially some of the longer sets! Even my doctor recommended against it for me but before you know it, the day or the night is gone.” And with various dates around the country, including festival and special performance

Armin van Buuren dates, the true master of the decks says he has plenty of music up his sleeve. “I have to say, there is no such thing as a typical performance,” he says. “It really depends on the crowd I have to say. “I can easily play uplifting trance if that’s what people want me to do or I can play progressive or techno. It depends on the crowd and where they want me to go. A lot of people want to know what’s going to happen but I can’t really say right now.” Indeed, YouTube clips from any number of Buuren gigs are wonderfully impressive. Expect an uplifting and satisfying show that will possess incredible amounts of energy. “If I see an uplifting record doesn’t work, I’ll try something else,” he says. “Everyone at the event who bought a ticket needs to go home satisfied. YUKSEK FAR AWAY Pierre-Alexandre Busson is a softly spoken Frenchman with undisputed talent. A practicing musician from an early age, the man is living his dream. “Actually I was writing music when I was young. I was part of a music school from the ages of six to 17 and was involved in various bands and other rock and electronic projects. Now I’ve arrived at Yuksek which is somewhere in between all of that – it is more of a pop influence and a vocal influence - things like that.” RK talks to the man himself. The producer, remixer and DJ has been incredibly busy since the release of his debut album So Far Away From The Sea, and although not entirely filtering down into the mainstream Australian electronic house scene, most fans of pop culture would known the famous single Tonight from the album. Playing mainly live shows and a few DJ sets throughout the year, Busson has finished up a tour and is now straight into the summer DJ set scene while working on a new album. Phew. And just when you think that’s all, he goes on to mention the collaborations currently on the go. Indeed, Busson is known for his collaborations that you could safely term ‘outsidethe-square.’ He has worked with The Killers, Invaders, Lady Gaga and even U-God from the Wu-Tang Clan.“Actually, the U-God remix was quite fun,” Busson says. “It was actually a track that didn’t exist from U-God. He never got the sample cleared and they kept the vocal and they asked a few producers to work on the release so it ended up basically being an original so it was quite fun. I like sometimes to make a non-existent track into something. What we’ve done before is choose for

example, 10 producers and choose some sounds and all make different tracks from that.” Busson goes on to say that his new album won’t feature as many hard-hitting tracks as So Far Away From The Sea showcased. “The next album is going to be something different because I don’t like to make the same thing twice,” Busson explains. “There are no club tracks on it at the moment. There are tracks like on the first album So Far Away From The Sea but the big banger tracks almost have disappeared. I am also singing on all of the tracks myself, some of the tracks were previously sung by other guys so this time I decided to sing by myself. It was a really cool experience; I write songs before I think about the productions so it is a natural flow for me. “When I play, I start to build my set as a growing sound. I don’t know if that means something but not quite slow or groovy, I go up and up. I try not to do those things; I feel like I’m more of a musician than a DJ. It is also a lot of fun to DJ and while I try to be professional, I try to keep it fun and give the crowd what I really like rather than just following the sound of the moment. I respect the bigger sounds but I don’t have time

to follow, I want to lead.” Finally, he adds that he hasn’t been to Australia for a DJ set before: “I’ve always played live,” he says. “There are a lot of cool guys on tour with me this time too. Some of them are friends so I think we’re going to have a lot of fun and I’ll do my best to play a lot of the new tracks I finished and see what’s going on.”

SPOR / CHASE AND STATUS / SUBFOCUS / NERO / BREAKAGE and more Belvoir Amphitheatre Friday, December 31, 2010 At quarter to seven the line to get into the Belvoir grounds was long but moving quickly. Everyone had the right idea; get there as the sun was going down and the shadows were lengthening. It was a sold out festival with no sales on the door, but there was still ample room inside to move. Everyone was looking pretty chilled as Muller played a crisp clean set on the top stage, but it appeared that the sound was only good if you stood close. If you were too far away it was taken by the wind and tunes appeared muffled, less punchy. The sound in the bowl, however, was phenomenal all night, and only got better as the sound was steadily turned up. Flight delays had led to a last minute re-shuffle of set times, but it definitely wasn’t something that was going to ruin anyone’s night. As Evol Intent hit the top stage to a gathering crowd, a slightly lacklustre start meant that it took a while for him to whip anyone into frenzy. Playing In The Middle Of the Night and Dead On Arrival back to back got the punters cheering though. A sure-fire winner. The sound in the amphitheatre was insane. After the flaccid sound at Breakfest Knowledge had bought their system in for the event and the difference was immediately apparent. 16 Bit’s opus Chainsaw Calligraphy never sounded as brutal as it did in the beautiful surrounds on the amphitheatre as the last rays of sun disappeared over the horizon. Nothing could prepare you for the amazing vibe that High Contrast created in the bowl though. People ran down those steps like they were on a mission as he launched into Danny Byrd’s Ill Behaviour. Kito was playing a fabulous set up top but High Contrast was playing epic tune after epic tune, setting the scene for some fabulous sets to come (and some very sore and sorry punters the next day). As Nero sauntered onto the main stage it was clear that they had a lot to live up to. Launching immediately into a straight-beat electro banger followed by their own brand of commercial dub step, it was clear that they were throwing everything they could at the hungry crowd. Seamless mixing, great energy flow, variation and some mind-blowing double-drops made this the set of the day for many.

Chase And Status (photo: Glen Canning) Unfortunately Chase And Status (or just Saul as it were) couldn’t keep the energy going, despite high expectations. Clearly, with a backcatalogue like these guys have, people are going to be vibin’ whatever you do, but Saul’s over-use of the rewind just served to destroy any flow that he’d built up. Meanwhile, Breakage was killing it on the top stage. Dressed in shirt and tie with a cigarette hanging from the side of his mouth, he dropped the seminal Benga and Coki classic Night to a smaller but appreciative crowd. The bass was definitely heavier than it had been earlier, but artists were still imploring the sound guys to ‘turn them up’. Many people aren’t sold on the live drum and bass set in general, but Subfocus, complete with home-made light show and an impressive back catalogue of hits, changed the opinions of many naysayers with a polished and entertaining performance. From Rock It, to a Deadmau5 remix, to This Could Be Real... the crowd started to flag, not because it was bad, but because people had been dancing furiously for almost five hours. Closing off the main stage was Spor. The Lifted prodigy rarely puts a foot wrong, and tonight was no exception, although dropping Innocence was a little unnecessary (as it had already been played a dozen times). Heavy and bandsaw brutal, it was a set that capped off the night perfectly. The move back to its origins was a great move for Knowledge. After utilising a diverse range of acts over the last couple of years, a return to Belvoir as well as keeping it drum and bass and dubstep specific was exactly what was needed to bring in the New Year. Here’s hoping the formula remains the same for next time. _REUBEN ADAMS 32

KID KENOBI AND MC SHURESHOCK THE ODD COUPLE

Having just torn the house down at Breakfest, Kid Kenobi and MC Shureshock are currently celebrating 10 years together as the nation’s favourite DJ/MC duo. Are they really great mates or, after all these years touring and performing, are they sick of the sight of each other? ANDREW NELSON dishes the dirt. It seems like Jesse Desenberg (Kid Kenobi) and Cameron Brown (MC Shureshock) have been around on the scene for ages. With countless tours and mix CDs including the seminal Ministry Of Sound Breaks and Kid Kenobi Sessions, the pair have an obvious chemistry. They first hooked up together in 2000 and from the start it was clear they were going to get along. “We were introduced through a mutual friend of ours who was our manager for many years,” Desenberg says. “We all went on tour one time down the snow and also had a huge party. That night we ended up talking in the snow with our shirts off ‘til six or seven in the morning bonding, as it does go sometimes when you’re partying in the snow. We just became friends and really hit it off I guess.” From this first initial friendship, a working relationship then evolved. Desenberg says Brown would come down from Brisbane to Sydney and do some gigs at a night the two were running at the time and then he would go up to Brisbane. He was then offered the Ministry Of Sound compilation which ended up being a big break for the duo. “They wanted me to put all the big tracks at the time on there,” Desenberg says.“It was going to be quite an obvious CD so I thought one way to make this a bit more interesting was to have an MC on it. I thought of Cameron and off the back of that we toured and we have been ever since”. It’s clearly a partnership that works well, which Brown reaffirms. “I think that firstly a good friendship and a common musical bond is one thing and a very common vision as to what we we’re trying to present and what we believe in as far as music goes [is another],” he says of the relationship. And Desenberg is, of course, in agreement with Brown and even goes on to describe the changes he has witnessed in Brown’s performance over their years working together. “He’s become really good at knowing how to step

around the places not to perform,” Desenberg says.“There are some MCs who just flat-line it and go ‘drrr’ [makes drilling noise] without listening to the track but Cam has become very good at stepping around the track and working it at a particular moment. He knows the tracks inside out so he knows what’s going to happen. It’s more like he’s being part of the song rather than MCing over the track. It just works.” This mutual love all sounds a bit like an American rom-com, surely they must piss each other off sometimes? “He has this really annoying habit where he scratches his balls and sniffs it, that’s disgusting but generally he leaves that to the hotel room,” Brown jokingly reveals (I think). Desenberg is a bit more tactful with his response. “There was a period where we used to fight a lot and get into each other’s faces,” he says. “I think as time goes by, we realised what kind of buttons to avoid pressing that annoyed the other person. You learn that particularly fast when your touring with someone and you’re not sleeping and probably drinking a lot the night before, then you’re hungover the next day and on a plane or in a car somewhere else and you could easily get annoyed with each other. I think we’ve become pretty good at it lately.” Plenty of partnerships encounter deceit these days and Desenberg reveals that the duo have cheated on each other. “There have been a few moments where I’ll be doing a solo gig and an MC turns up and it’s interesting,” he says. “You have to learn how to work with someone else. Cam’s not usually too upset about it because he thinks he’s better than anyone else [laughs]. We do a lot of own solo work as well so it works really well. We both realise that’s a much stronger position to be in because we’re both bringing our individual projects of work to the table rather than being in each other pockets all the time.” That’s exactly what has happened with the recently released EP entitled Ten, which

Kid Kenobi and MC Shureshock amazingly is the first time the pair have produced a track together. “It’s an EP that’s encapsulated everything we’ve been doing over the last ten years, there’s a dub-step/jungle track called Safe Sounds, then we did a retro acid break beats tune [Acid Breaks] and then a dub track,” Desenberg reveals. The vocals on Safe Sounds are a tribute to Brown’s three month old daughter, India. Desenberg’s partner is expecting too so both the boys’ lives will be changing dramatically over the next 18 months or so which begs the question: does this fatherhood signal the end of an era? “The next 12 months is about sustaining income and supporting family and trying to put down a couple of records and not putting

ourselves under too much pressure,” Brown replies. “I was hoping to release my debut solo album next year but I’ve recently had to relegate my studio to a baby room but we intend to continue a strong body of releases.” Anniversaries, affairs and now babiesthe pair sound like a proper nuclear family and from the sounds of what’s to come; it may just get rowdy at Big Day Out, especially if Desenberg brings his hotel room habit out onto the stage. SOME LIKE IT HOT SOUTHBOUND Sir Stewart Bovell Park Saturday, January 1 – Monday, January 3, 2011 A full three days of music in the scorching heat of a mostly shadeless field was never going to be a comfortable task, but since 2005 Southbound has been the only way to start the year for thousands of festival lovers across WA. 2011’s edition was the most ambitious yet, and apart from a few camping problems, the festival succeeded. Sally Seltmann’s rendition of Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain kicked off the weekend with style in the big top before local rockers Young Revelry put on a heavy and aggressive set to match the weather on the smaller Scissors Stage. Kitty Daisy & Lewis was the freshest international act of the day playing old timey rockabilly and bringing plenty of style to the big top. Their version of Going Up The Country was a fitting track for the festival at hand with many punters no doubt choosing to “Stay drunk all the time”. As the Wasamba percussion crew marched through the camping area, they were a worthy and colourful distraction for those seeking refuge from the Stone siblings whispering back at the camp site. The opening night twilight set of Hot Hot Heat seemed out of place despite the band’s name. Opening with their only hit Bandages, this reviewer was left pessimistic as to whether that indie dancefloor classic of 2003 is even that good nearly a decade later. A band that would struggle to get even a pm slot at most any other festival, Hot Hot Heat’s key timeslot should have been used on someone more relevant. Ladyhawke managed to lift spirits with the one-two succession of her modern pop classics Paris Is Burning and My Delirium before Interpol headlined opening night with a new look line-up and frontman Paul Banks sporting a new do and a stage energy not seen in the band before. Their first ever festival appearance in WA saw them revisit their monotone hits including Evil, Barricade and PDA. The second day began at the crack of dawn for us campers with the temperature making tents uncomfortable as early as 7am. This is when the obvious cuts in camping at the event this year became apparent. A line stretching hundreds of metres was formed for punters wishing to escape the shadeless

camping area for the beach; the ridiculous rule preventing people from accessing their cars meant thousands had to stand waiting in the blistering sun for hours longer than necessary, while the base camp was practically null and void this year losing is exclusivity for campers and failing to cater to the campers’ needs. But thankfully the music helped us forget the discomfort with The Cold War Kids proving to be a dark horse of the festival. With so many radio hits in their repertoire, the fourpiece had the main stage pumping and it was rare to see such a band of notoriety playing cheap guitars in Squires and Epiphones. A refreshing new addition to the festival this year was the comedy on the Scissors Stage, which The Bedroom Philosopher headed up on the Saturday. With Josh Earl MCing and paying out on every one from U2 to that pesky photographer in the sailor’s cap, the main act couldn’t help but have another swipe at the Prince Of Wales Hote. As the weather went from bad to worse thanks to some nearby fires, Birds Of Tokyo’s set had that rare feeling in the air as the sky lit red for their sundowner set on the main stage with Plans proving a crowd favourite. The most anticipated and most loved band at the festival was The National who had one of the biggest albums of last year in High Violet. They had the big top jam-packed and from the moment frontman Matt Berninger smashed his full red wine glass on his microphone as an introduction, we were in for a hell of a show. The crowd was hanging on every word of Anyone’s Ghost and Bloodbuzz Ohio through to Terrible Love in a highly memorable set. After about 40 minutes of hype which was becoming increasingly harder to believe, hip hop legends Public Enemy finally took the stage to perform Fear Of A Black Planet. With such classics as Fight The Power and 911 Is A Joke on offer, Chuck D and Flavor Flav looked like they were having fun playing their 20-year old material to a bunch of 20-year-old white kids. Also reeling in the years was Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, who looked and sounded much younger than they are with an energetic set opening with Bad Reputation and Cherry Bomb before I Love Rock’N’Roll and Crimson & Clover brought an end to a long, 42.5 degree day. A calming sea breeze occupied Sir Stewart Bovell Park making the final day a refreshingly pleasant experience. After The Chemist kicked off what should be a strong year for them on the Scissors Stage highlighted with a cover of John Lennon’s How Do You Sleep, it was time for some chilled hip hop in the big top with The Cool Kids, who last played a blue tent in WA at Parklife in 2009 with similar sound problems as that made it real difficult to hear the rapping. Marina & The Diamonds also brought their quirky Kate Bush-styled pop to the main stage and it proved as much a hit as Santigold on the same stage a few years back, but it was little warning for what was to come. Sleigh Bells’ main stage set will go down as a memorable highlight of the 2011 Southbound. Hitting the stage to an explosion of samples, the two piece launched immediately into Tell ‘Em and with Derek E. Miller riffing on his Jackson guitar, usually reserved for metal and hardcore bands, in front of a wall of Marshall stacks and Alexis Krauss proving to be a vivacious frontwoman, the crowd, and this reviewer, were left flabbergasted with high energy heavy dance rock show. Paul Kelly followed and was also a top pick as kids of all ages sung along to just about every word of his set consisting of classic Australian chestnuts. Peaches DJ Show was also a hoot,

as the always entertaining performer grabbed the microphone for a rendition of Tina Turner’s Private Dancer. It was almost time for the show to end when The Rapture took to the big top stage. Not seen in WA since they played a similar set in a similar tent at Parklife 2009, the four-piece promised the crowd a Slayer show, and while it wasn’t quite that heavy, a new track was dropped in as was a slightly different version of No Sex For Ben – which still produced one of the biggest sing-alongs of the weekend, and strengthening the band’s reputation for being a killer party band. Whereas people over the age of 18 can appreciate The Rapture, it’s the kids who dig the cheesy rave of the Klaxons, who’s ADDinfluenced helium-voiced space pop proved a headache for those preparing for camp. It certainly wasn’t an easy three days of sun, dirt and music, but there were plenty of worthy distractions on the stages to make you forget about the real world, if only for a weekend. _MATTHEW HOGAN

JOHANNES LUEBBERS DECTET The Corpse Lives With his new album The Exquisite Corpse Of Beethoven launching next week, it marks the next step in a lifelong musical journey for 25-year-old composer Johannes Luebbers. Since he began playing piano in primary school and moving on to writing music in high school, it was in his final year of school that things really started to take off. “In year 12 I had the opportunity to participate in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Young Composers Program’, which was fantastic, allowing me to write and record a piece for the orchestra,” Luebbers recalls. Soon after that he studied jazz at WAAPA, formed his ten-piece band (or ‘Dectet’ if you will) and they recorded their first album Make Some Noise, which won ‘Best Australian Jazz Song of the Year’ at the 2009 Jazz ‘Bell’ Awards. While the title of their latest album might sound a bit morbid, Luebbers says that’s not the case. “The title track of the album is named after the compositional process behind the piece, rather than Beethoven’s actual corpse,” he clarifies. “Dada and surrealist artists used to play a game

called the ‘Exquisite Corpse’ game, where they would each contribute parts of a picture or story without seeing the other’s contribution, creating some pretty crazy results. I applied that same process to a number of Beethoven sonatas resulting in his exquisite corpse!” A cover of Leonard Cohen’s Halleujah also appears on the album, but the composer says his version, with Aaron Malone of local rockers Village Kid on vocals, is far different to the versions you might see on certain television talent shows. “Hallelujah has been recorded by heaps of artists, but most of the versions I’ve heard are very similar,” he says. “I think the version we’ve created on this album is quite unique and reinvents the song in a way that hasn’t been done before. I arranged it for a gig we did a while ago with Aaron Malone and I thought Aaron would sound amazing singing such a poetic, beautiful song. The recorded version also features Simon Jeans on guitar, which adds a whole new dimension to it.” Luebbers has previously arranged for Sinead O’Connor, Dan Sultan, The Panics and he always welcomes the experience. “It’s

always a huge thrill to hear something I’ve arranged being performed by them,” he says. “Each project presents different challenges but often the biggest challenge is finding a balance between fulfilling the brief of the arrangement (which can be very specific) and being creative within that. I’m often working from an existing recording, so I love any job where I can be more creative and put my own stamp on it. Dan Sultan was probably the most fun to write, as I had the freedom to put my own spin on things. Part of the fun of arranging is finding ways of being creative within the constraints of the song.” After a massive 2010, Luebbers is hoping for a more relaxed 2011, but he does have some exciting things in the pipeline. “Current projects include writing music for a new musical and writing the ‘run on’ theme for the Waratahs rugby team,” he reveals. “I also co-run the Listen/Hear Collective, which has a number of new albums coming out, and I hope to do a few smaller original recording projects of my own. On top of that the Dectet has been nominated as one of the Australian entries to the European Jazz Competition which, if

LAUNCH PAD Australia’s first online booking agency, Gig Launch connects global artists to promoters. Based in Perth, the company recently paid for Amanda Baker (above centre photo) to fly to American music mecca Nashville to record her song The Fool; after she won the Show Me The Music International Songwriting Contest. Gig Launch organised to have an Australian category with a prize of airfare and accommodation in Nashville as well as a day’s recording in a prestigious studio on Music Row. Gig Launch is also sponsoring April’s Apollo Bay Music Festival in Victoria by donating $1000 to a winner. Submissions to Apollo are exclusive to Gig Launch, so if you’re a solo artist or in a band that are looking to get a few extra gigs, or even just a little bit more exposure, Gig Launch is the way to go. Only a year and a half in the making, their website went live in April 2010 and aims to connect Aussie artists and bands with a myriad of local and international advertisers, and other musical acts, and to push tunes into all corners of the world. The process is simple to access this musical promotion tool. It’s cheap, cheap, cheap to join; the first month is free, then it’s either $5.95 or $7.95 a month, depending on how many megabytes you require. Then you create your very own Electronic Press Kit (EPK) and upload content to your heart’s desire; pictures, audio,

video… whatever. This page essentially becomes a webpage which you can dish out to all your mates and prospective promoters, and a hub through which to spread your music. If you already have a profile, you have your rockin’ tunes; you have your sexy photos and videos, now what? Well, Gig Launch advertises different events and gigs that you can play at on their website. To apply for a particular gig or promotion, you simply submit your EPK. Some events have a small submission price chosen entirely by the promoter. Now here’s the genius. Advertisers get paid a portion of the fee you’ve submitted when, and only when, they check out your EPK. If they don’t look, they don’t get the cash; it’s an incentive-based process. You’re guaranteed that your profile will get viewed, and your music will get listened to, otherwise the promoters won’t get paid. Since its launch the response has been overwhelming and Gig Launch now has a huge and diverse range of acts using their agency. Their database includes over 50,000 bands and artists, and they already have more than 14,000 fans on MySpace. The website also has Band Chat, where you can get in touch with other musicians, as well as free online guitar tuners and metronomes.
