PEARL JAM TREATS Deeper Water
Fire… flood! If you were of a religious persuasion you could be forgiven for postulating that the great reckoning had arrived Down Under. But alas, we have seen such devastating examples of nature’s fury in the past – albeit not always in tandem and with such disastrous consequences. So this week we propagate a simple message – come together to help our brothers and sisters. To donate to the Queensland Premier’s flood relief head to qld.gov.au/floods/donate. They are going to need every penny. _JULIAN TOMPKIN

DEATH TO DULLSVILLE
BREAK DOWN
Dear X-Press,
Dear X-Press,
Dear X-Press,
Julian Tompkin
After attending Summadayze over the weekend, I have to complain about the lack of toilet facilities around the place. While the place wasn’t overly crowded and it seemed quite easy to get a drink without waiting too long, I couldn’t find myself a port-a-potty within an earshot of the music. I found this particularly tough when trance god Armin van Buuren was doing his two hour set at sundown. Without wanting to miss a minute at what was arguably one of the finest DJ sets I’ve ever seen, I looked around the crowd and all I could see was scantily clad ravers, but no plastic fortresses of solitude where I could relieve my bladder from the pressure the alcohol I’d consumed was causing. I was left with no choice but to derobe (slightly), squat, drop my dacks and piddle while people danced around me. Despite urine being known for being filtered through one’s kidneys (especially when compared to semen, excrement, spit and blood), people (approximately 25,000 of them) on the internet seem to have caught wind of my move and labelled me a ‘dirty bitch’. For shame Perth – how do you think underground raves used to run in the ‘90s? We were so preoccupied with the music that a little bit of piss on one’s shoe was par for the course.
Finally the dullsville tag has been shaken from Perth this year! If punters are still not happy about what they can go to and are waiting for the Kazakhstan Kazakh State Kurmangazy Orchestra to tour than I guess some tastes just can’t be satisfied! While we have had many excellent bands, we have also had some that, just like boxers, don’t understand the word retirement. Well other than those geriatric performers we also have been treated to some seriously red hot bands. My vote for gig of 2010 here in dullsville would have to be Muse! This band is just plowing their way through the world and their live performance matches the dramatic sound. We have been privileged to see the uprising of Muse in 2010 just may have filled the supermassive black hole.
Just want to reiterate what Julie (Reactions #1247) said in last week’s X-Press about Breakfest. I hadn’t been for five years and only listen to breaks occasionally but I do like the music and the scene and was at least expecting to hear breaks at BREAKfest. The music and therefore the atmosphere really lagged behind how it was five years ago when I used to look forward to it more than Christmas!

BACK TO HIS ROOTS
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu fans listen up! The ARIA Award winning indigenous artist has just confirmed that he will release a brand new album on April 8, promising tracks that delve deep into his Aboriginal identity. Entitled Rrakala, the album is named after a sub-group of folk within the Gumatj clan, and gets its first public airing in P-town when Gurrumul takes to the stage of the West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots Festival on Sunday, April 17, at Fremantle Park. Tickets are on sale now from Moshtix.
Nikola Sarcevic
A TASTE OF MILLEN
Scandinavian folk rocker Nikola Sarcevic, best known for his work as the frontman of Swedish punk/alternative rock band Millencolin, is coming to town. That’s right folks; Sarcevic launched his own solo career back in 2003 whilst still performing as the extroverted lead singer for Millencolin. His solo work reveals a different side of the frontman, a more sensitive, introverted persona. His albums Lock-Sport-Krock and Roll Roll and Flee are both stark, devotional folk ballads. Joining Sarcevic will be Jimmy and Steve from Perth’s favourite pioneering punk band, Kerb. The boys will be coming out of the woodwork to perform a special acoustic set, performing songs from their albums Nobody Here But Us Walruses and Chords And The Truth. It’s all happening on Sunday, March 6, at the Rosemount Hotel. Doors open 5.30pm. Tickets from oztix.com.au, Mills, Planet and 78’s.

JOHN WATERS Everything Flows The ever-popular John Waters returns with his celebration of the life and music of John Lennon, Looking Through A Glass Onion, at the Regal Theatre this Friday-Saturday, January 1415. Bookings available through Ticketek. Not many people have more first-hand experience of the enduring legacy of John Lennon than John Waters. In 1992 he and musician Stewart D’Arrietta created Looking Through A Glass Onion, a two-man show paying homage to Lennon for a five-week run in a cabaret room at the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo. By 1994 it had toured theatre venues nationally and went on to a three-week run in London’s West End. It has since toured Australia again in 2000-01 and 2004. It’s been six years between drinks, but Waters is now enjoying a return to the show, which began its current run six weeks ago at the Sydney Opera House. He clearly has deep respect for Lennon and for the show itself, given that it now has a near-20 year history but its theatrical runs are sporadic. This is also due in part to the constant demand for Waters’ acting talents. From the time he arrived in Australia from England in the early-‘70s, he has been a constant presence on our screens from Play School to Rush (the ABC-TV’s bushranger show, not 10’s current overwrought cop drama), Homicide to Breaker Morant, All The Rivers Run to All Saints, and a full CV of heater work betwixt and between. He currently features in Network 10’s lovelorn series, Offspring, which films its second series next month. Waters also has an autobiography due out this year, as well as a new album of original material, Cloudland. As ever, music is never far away and certainly not that of John Lennon’s.
(laughs). Those boxed sets; I guess the mono ones are for purists. And the timing of the releases on iTunes, that’s all music publishers’ decision-making, but it’s prompted by the constant knowledge-seeking about The Beatles and Lennon; they’re responding to the feelings and trends out there. They have this idea that every few years there’s a new generation of teenagers or 18 year-olds that are intrigued by the music and want to know more. And I find that when I do the show. So yeah, I think these things are motivated by other things, but it works both ways. It’s a strange phenomenon that The Beatles are always going to be an important part of what makes up contemporary music and people want to know more about it. Going back to when you first collaborated on the show with Stewart D’Arrietta, I’m not imagining that you were thinking that it would still have legs approaching two decades later? Oh, no way (laughs).
Has there been a shift in how you approach it or are the core values still the same? I think the intensity of the show and the integrity of everything that surrounds it remains intact. That’s one of the beautiful things about it. It’s six years since we last performed it and in spite of all the anniversaries and everything, I had a feeling – in my waters, as it were (laughs) – I just knew that I was going to be doing the show again sometime. The guys in the band have all played the show By BOB GORDON before; luckily we can always reassemble the same musicians. It’s the same crew, same Going into a run of Looking Through A Glass lighting and sound; it’s like a family. We got to Onion must be quite poignant at the best the Opera House a couple of weeks ago and all of times, but given that recent months embraced each other and said, ‘it’s great to be have marked John Lennon’s 70th birthday back again’. And it is, you know? It genuinely is. and the 30th anniversary of his passing, is it I’m very glad to be on the road with the show especially so doing it now? again. I think there is a bit of a special I’m glad to be going back to the feeling in the air. There’s an awareness out there Regal in Subi, too. I mean the Regal is one of in the world of what we lost when we lost John the homes that the show has found. It’s one Lennon; it seems to have peaked. So it feels like of the venues that broke the show, on the a good time to be doing a show, to be reliving national front. I think when we first did the certain memories. Regal we had a four-week season of packed We’ve had a great reception so far. I’m out houses. You know people hear about finding a lot of new people are coming to the these things, they get to know about it. We’re show. I get a lot of feedback when we bring the on more of a whistle-stop tour now, these show back - there’s quite a few return people; isolated gigs. We won’t be doing a long stay there’s always new people, of course, but I do this time, but it’s good to go back. think there’s a newer, younger demographic that is really keen on the idea of knowing more Do you think people appreciate the show about John Lennon, people who are really because it’s not something that you’ve been intrigued by the music and the man behind it. out flogging every six months… although I guess it would be possible if you had been There are so many things regarding Lennon prepared to compromise? and The Beatles that allow that discovery, Yeah, it could probably get a residency aside from the quality and the timelessness in a casino and run non-stop, but that’s not of the music itself. be shooting that in February-March while I’m doing more gigs with Glass Onion. I’ll be in Melbourne three-quarters of the week and off on weekends doing Glass Onion. I’ll be coming off work and I’ll be fairly knackered, but I’ll be celebrating something that I find very hard to leave forever.
pretty versatile; I’m involved in all forms of being an entertainer. I do live stage work; I do music and recording; I do guest appearances; I do straight acting in guest roles on film and television. I knew that I had to be versatile, had to be busy in order to survive in this industry and nothing seems to have changed.
I recall seeing a documentary about Cirque de Soleil’s Love performances where Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison stopped by to see the work-in-progress and were very protective and vocal about what they thought wasn’t appropriate. I believe you gained Yoko’s approval for your show; what was that process like? Yeah we had dealings with Yoko. The copyright issues were different in those days; it was different in one territory to another. We spoke in London to Yoko through our promoter, Michael White, and found she was very accepting of what we were doing. I think we probably passed muster in terms of being playful and dignified. Her job is to protect John Lennon’s memory and I think she does a very good job of that. Luckily we passed muster on that occasion.
Do you enjoy your Offspring role because the character, D’Arcy, is also musical? Yeah, I like that aspect to it, including the fact that D’Arcy is a musician. We worked out that he probably was in a band years ago that had one record that was #28 on the charts and he was on Countdown once and was interviewed by Molly Meldrum. He never had a full career but music still remains his love even though he’s found out his charm works in real estate.
You were in the TV series, All Saints, which was cancelled in 2009 after more than a decade on-air. By 2010 you were working on Offspring, starring in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of The Singing Club as well as working on your soon-to-be released album, Cloudland. You must be well-used to that scenario of one door closing and another opening… That’s all part of being a jobbing actor. I mean, I’d just been with All Saints for three-anda-half years of the show, which even that is a long time for me to be doing one show. It’s the longest-running job I’ve ever had, actually. When it finished I just resumed my normal jobbing around activities, which I’ve always done. I’m
It’s a good series isn’t it? Kind of like an older Secret Life Of Us… Yeah, it is. Well John Edwards is the producer of both and he does do a great job with these stories that are about groups of people – in this case the family and the people who surround that family. It’s a great cast and the writing is really responsible and with the concept of seeing what Nina (Asher Keddie) fantasises about; it’s a lot of fun to be involved with. With the character of D’Arcy he’s a very eager, willing, charming, happy man who looks at the positive side of life and I’ve always played rather dark and depressing characters on television before. So I really like the fact that D’Arcy is a departure from that, he’s someone who always puts a positive spin on everything because it makes life easier that way. That said, the New Year looks busy for you, what’s your philosophy going into it? (Laughs) To use the words of Bob Dylan, ‘may you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung; and may you stay forever young’. www.xpressmag.com.au
TOO SOLID Desert Songs
The Too Solid Music Festival hits Supreme Court Gardens for the definitive Australia Day celebrations to complement the Skyworks on Wednesday, January 26 – a free event starring such indigenous luminaries as Christine Anu, The Last Kinection and the Gya Ngoop Kobori Dance Group, as well as fresh Too Solid discovery John Bennett. JULIAN TOMPKIN joins in the celebrations. Like all good ideas, Too Solid began in a backyard conversation. The brainchild of WA indigenous arts workers Jade Masters and Phil Bartlett, the concept germinated from Bartlett’s position as the Indigenous Music Officer for WAM, and a joint desire to develop indigenous music in WA. The inaugural Too Solid Music Awards would finally be launched, in conjunction with WAM, in 2009 – commending the top Aboriginal artists from around the state for their talent. While a significant leap forward for WA, Too Solid were already planning the next major stages of the organisation – a music festival and an indigenous record label. The inaugural Too Solid Music Festival – in conjunction with Abmusic and Noongar Radio – took place on Australia Day 2010 in front of a 10,000 strong crowd, and featured many of WA’s established and up-and-coming indigenous artists, as well as a number of non-indigenous artists. 2011’s festival takes another great leap forward, having secured the reigning queen of contemporary indigenous music, Christine Anu, as well as a full program of indigenous and nonindigenous talent. A successor to the national Survival Festival Concerts, which have taken place around Australia since 1988, Masters says Too Solid – slang for awesome or great – is all about celebrating talent and promoting the positive message of reconciliation. “My belief is the bid to reconciliation is through music,” he explains. “At the end of the day we’re all Australian and it’s Australia Day, so it belongs to everyone in my opinion. We are now a multicultural country. I guess in a black fella sense it is ‘invasion day’, which is why I have included the white fellas [on the line-up]. In order to be powerful I believe that indigenous organisations need to come out and do events like this and include the white fella because that’s where we’re going to move forward as one.” While both the festival and the Too Solid Awards – with the next scheduled for 2011 – may have finally filled a void in celebrating indigenous music in Western Australia, Too Solid’s work was far from complete. With the assistance of significant funding from the Australia Council, Too Solid Records was founded in 2010. Its mission was clear: to uncover local indigenous talent, record their music professionally and have it distributed nationally – and potentially internationally – as a commercial product. Assembling a panel of five local experts – headed by long time music industry operative Pete Carroll and also featuring X-Press’ Bob Gordon, as well as acclaimed indigenous playwright David Milroy – Too Solid set about sifting through hundreds of applications; unanimously settling on John Bennett, from the Bidyadanga Community near Broome, as its debut artist. With his album now recorded and set for release in April this year, with distribution and promotion through Skinnyfish Music – the label responsible for global indigenous sensation Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu – panel chairman Pete Carroll (former Sony state manager, Offworld Sounds record label founder and manager of The Panics and Tim & Jean) admits that uncovering John Bennett has been
one of the most fulfilling things of his long, international career. “What Too Solid is trying to do is deliver all of the tools that any other artist would expect to have, which would give those aboriginal artists the opportunity to go national,” Carroll explains. “John Bennett’s music really stood out. The fact that he comes from a very small community near Broome makes it even sweeter in that it’s a label that really does reach throughout the entire state, and this is clearly a guy who may not have had the opportunity to be heard in a broader sense if it wasn’t for the label – and not to just to deliver his music, but help him make a great record. And I think it is a great record – it’s really something quite special. Certainly for me, it’s one of the most fulfilling projects that I have ever been involved with. “[Indigenous ar tists] have got something unique to say,” Carroll concludes. “They have a story that’s uniquely Australian and unique to this country. They have a story
to tell and that’s very different what from white Australian bands have got to say – which essentially is not that much different from what and English or American band has to say. It is truly one of the most exciting projects I have been involved in.”

THE JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION Still Number One It’s been six years since the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion last toured Australia. But after a year spent reissuing their ‘90s catalogue the legendary dirty shirt rock’n’rollers are back… on the stage at least. MATTHEW HOGAN chats to the manic frontman himself ahead of their show tonight, Thursday, January 13, at The Rosemount. “In 2010 we reissued the back catalogue, which were all out of print, so we began to play a series of concerts to mark the reissues. We started playing in the spring of 2010 and continued through the summer and the fall. Now here we in 2011 and we’ve just started this tour of New Zealand and Australia.”
With the scene perfectly set, Jon Spencer informs us just what he’s been up to recently. While the Blues Explosion has not been as prolific as they were in the ‘90s, when they brought out no less than six albums and swag of remixes EPs and compilations, they’ve just unleashed seven collections of tunes featuring a whopping 239 tracks in total. “We did one compilation, the Dirty Shirt Rock’n’Roll compilation, to kick off this reissue series,” Spencer says. “There were six reissues and those were all reissues of proper albums we’d done back in the ‘90s, but all of them were greatly expanded to include a lot of extra material – most of which had never been released before. A couple of years ago, prior to all this, we did have another compilation on In The Red Records of singles that we’d done on that label, that was the Jukebox [Explosion Rockin’ Mid-90s Punkers] compilation.” Out now through Shout Records, Spencer says the band had their work cut out for them sourcing their old unused material.“The band owns everything, but trying to find it was not the easiest thing,” he says. “It was a big job and we’d spent a long time working on everything – on this reissue project, and locating all of the materials was part of that and then figuring out what was what – because some things weren’t properly labelled. A lot of the stuff I don’t remember because I have trouble recalling specific sessions and dates and information and things like that. It was a big project.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
“A good example is for the album Orange; there was a song that we’d totally forgotten about that we recorded in the studio and then just scrapped – we’d never finished it,” he continues.“So we’d discovered a song called Haircut. It was listed on the track sheets for the multi-track reels but I had no memory of what this thing was, nor did anyone else. Not Judah [Bauer] or Russell [Simins] or the engineer that we did the session with. So I took the tape to the studio and first I had to bake it. Some of these analogue tapes, you have to bake in order to be able to play them again. The magnetic tape; these old analogue tapes don’t age very well – they get a bit sticky at the back end of the magnetic tape – it’s gotten sticky over the years so

if you just put it in a low oven for a little bit, it dries it out and it can play again fine. So we took this reel tape and baked it and did a mix with this lost song.” Don’t expect too many of these recently uncovered gems at tonight’s show, as Spencer admits the band’s not playing them. “Well no, we’re not,” he concedes. “Currently we’re playing songs from all the albums, you know. Not just the reissues but also the albums that came after these six albums from the ’90s. So we’ll play songs from the whole band’s history. We’re doing some with new arrangements. We’re also playing some new songs. I think after some new songs, I think with me – I really wanted to play some new stuff so we’ve started to write some new songs.” While guitarist Bauer has been busy in recent years with Cat Power & The Dirty Delta Blues and drummer Simins has been busy working with Dan The Automator in Men Without Pants, the frontman has been busy with Matt Verta-Ray in Heavy Trash, who played their first Australian show at Devilles Pad just over a year ago (“That’s a crazy venue. Who could forget that place?”). While he’s not promising any new material from JSBX of Heavy Trash, he hints at some new material from his band he’s had for 20 years with his wife, Cristina Martinez, Boss Hog.
“SOME OF THESE ANALOGUE TAPES, YOU HAVE TO BAKE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THEM AGAIN. THE MAGNETIC TAPE; THESE OLD ANALOGUE TAPES DON’T AGE VERY WELL – THEY GET A BIT STICKY AT THE BACK END OF THE MAGNETIC TAPE – IT’S GOTTEN STICKY OVER THE YEARS SO IF YOU JUST PUT IT IN A LOW OVEN FOR A LITTLE BIT, IT DRIES IT OUT AND IT CAN PLAY AGAIN FINE.” “ We played last August at the Amphetamine Reptile 25th anniversary,” he says. “This was out in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States. It was the last time we’ve played. We’ve played a show here and there over the past couple of years. It’s been nice. It’s funny, I’ve just been emailing today with all the members of Boss Hog – somebody found a YouTube clip of a band covering a Boss Hog song, so we’re all writing to each other about and we’ve started writing to each other, ‘oh we should make another album…’.”

OWEN PALLETT Yes He Can Speaking over the phone from Toronto, Owen Pallett laments the chores of the day: “It’s so boring,” he sighs, exasperated. “I’m just doing some scoring for some short films that are being put together by the New York Times. They’re just short films… today I did Natalie Portman and when I get off the phone I’ll do Matt Damon.” He plays The Fly By Night on Saturday, January 22. AMELIA SCHMIDT reports. That does sound terrible. I’d surely hate to live my life in Toronto, one of the most liveable cities in the world, writing film scores for the world’s top publication and celebrity actors and directors, or scoring music for the likes of Grizzly Bear and The National, in between touring and writing complex, beautiful music that is largely applauded by critics around the globe. Not for me. No thank you! “I try to be very selective when I’m doing the film scoring stuff,” Pallett continues.“I try to do stuff with either directors I really like or with very well paid gigs, and this is kind of a combination of both. I mean, it’s not the best money but considering it’s just someone taking me a week to score movies and then I’m going to go to Prague to conduct it; it’s a pretty fun gig really.” He’s talking about Fourteen Actors Acting, directed by Solve Sundsbo and featuring some of the top Hollywood talent (Tilda Swinton, Jesse Eisenberg, James Franco and more are also included on the bill along with Portman and Damon) performing one-minute long narratives, with Pallett’s score to be performed by the Czech Symphony Strings. For Pallett, this is one of a myriad of projects he’s turned his talented hand to over the last few months, including orchestral scores for some little musical groups that some of you may have heard of. “I did that for a couple of years just because the offers kept coming in and I’d just take on different things,” he says. “I just did a little something for Grizzly Bear about a month ago, and I also did something for The National a little while ago – I used to just sort of keep my door wide open and I’d take any gig that came along. I still tried to maintain a do-what-you-can policy with my clients, because I’m more interested in making good records than a pile of cash.” And good records he sure is making – both for others and for himself, with his latest album, Heartland, flooring audiences with its complexity and stunning orchestral beauty. But having your fingers in as many pies as Pallett means having to prioritise. “I found getting to work on Heartland was delayed by a year just because of all the gigs I had as a scorer,” he laments,“and I kind of vowed that I wouldn’t get so involved with it until I put out a few more records.” So as a result, Heartland has taken a while to properly formulate and produce – although the result has been worth it. “I sort of conceived the idea in mid 2006, but I didn’t really start to knuckle down and write anything for it until March 2008, which was quite annoying, as I did make a mention of it on my message board at one point, being like ‘what do you think of this as a title for a record?’. But a weekly paper in Toronto picked up on that post and decided that that it would be out very soon, like 2007! And of course I didn’t even start writing it until the year after then, and not even recording it until late 2008, so yeah… it was kind of a long process. But the reason it took so long was because the record itself was pretty ambitious, and most of the time when people get involved with [a project so large] they sort of have a team assembled – they have a personal assistant, a producer, an engineer and all that kind of stuff. But I didn’t really have anybody.” The project was complicated because of the scope of the concept, which, to summarise,

is an album-length narrative of a protagonist in a Dungeons And Dragons-type universe ruled by a god-figure called, naturally, Owen.“I embraced the theory behind Dungeons And Dragons as my own fate,” he explains, “just to approach a songwriter’s voice, because I was interested in writing from the position of a theist, and singing songs that I felt were perspective of someone who did believe in afterlife and higher power.” The majority of media attention, however, has been focused on the D&D side of things, which Pallett seems to resent a little.“I kind of used the imagery of Dungeons And Dragons as a metaphor because I thought that it would be entertaining,” he admits.“But that was a very small factor of the making of that record and tended to be kind of written off as the Dungeons And Dragons record. People can talk about it however they want – I mean the concept. I think I spent much more time working on it [than they give me credit for], but I don’t feel like I have to have a slideshow demonstrating all the different working parts.” Much like a fantasy book without a map, Heartland is missing some explanation, for sure. But that hasn’t stopped the praise – although Pallett is also quite wary and cynical about music reviewing and criticism, too. “I really respect Pitchfork and I think they have some very good writers,” he says, “but I don’t have any interest in the rating system as I don’t think it reflects the way I personally listen to music. I kind of listen to an album or don’t listen to an album, and I typically feel that most music is quite equal because it’s not like Kayne [West] worked any harder than I did on my record or then M.I.A. worked on hers.”

DURAN DURAN All You Need Is Now
ABBIE CARDWELL The Bare Bones Sessions
Tapemodern
Rootsytunes Records / Vitamin
After the commercial disaster of their last effor t Red Carpet Massacre, Duran Duran have taken a look in the mirror and decided that rejuvenating their classic ‘80s sound is the answer to their prayers. They’re partially correct – producer Mark Ronson has a sympathetic ear and the band coat these songs with many of the features that marked their golden-era music: Nick Rhodes’ distinctive synths, John Taylor’s slinky bass lines and the classic dance-rock hybrid that DD may not have created, but certainly perfected. Their skill at swelling, atmospheric ballads continues with Leave A Light On and they partially revive the spooky synth minimalism of key Rio track The Chauffeur in two outstanding tunes, closing track Before The Rain and the Kelis-featuring The Man Who Stole A Leopard. But it’s the up-tempo sing-alongs that keep the fans coming back, and these are delivered with panache in the form of lead single and title track All You Need Is Now, the nervy Being Followed and the propulsive Blame The Machines. The rapturous reception the record is receiving is partially a warm reaction to the return of the classic Duran Duran sound – despite many strong moments, the album isn’t quite the triumph many are trumpeting.
When former Unearthed performer Abbie Cardwell entered the studio with her band (brother Jed and drummer Ashley Davies) to record The Bare Bones Session, she stipulated that it would capture the band totally live with no overdubs and no edits. The authenticity of this approach shines through on The Bare Bones Sessions with Cardwell’s earthy voice serving the blues infused tunes like 52 Pickup and Candystore admirably. Cardwell is an artist who loves life on the road and has learnt much of her craft in between long drives in the tour van. As such the songs here give a feeling of being well and truly road hardened. The shining moment of The Bare Bones Sessions comes at the hand of a cover of Ryan Adam’s Come Pick Me Up. While it is one of those songs you would be hard pressed to ruin, Cardwell gives a breathy and fragile performance here. Cardwell undoes any of her good work though with a cover of Timbuk 3’s appalling Future’s So Bright You’ve Got To Wear Shades. What would possess anyone to try and impart any life into that rotten corpse? Cardwell refers to her music as rootsyrockabilly-twang and that would be fitting, it is just the quality that is variable. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

After an outstanding debut, followed by a couple of fairly average full-length releases, Brooklyn-based shoegazers Asobi Seksu have finally hit the ground running with fourth LP Fluorescence, on which their colour-saturated soundscapes burn even brighter and their many shades shift with each passing song. Dizzyingly energetic one moment, loopy and surreal the next, Asobi Seksu’s bouncy, fill-heavy drumming, soft-focus guitars and brute syncopated grooves envelop extremely floaty reverb-drenched vocals, shrouding melodies too shimmering for bare sight. With a demeanour built upon antagonistic relationships, electric and alternating, the band, like the instruments they so masterfully employ, are apt to prove noise and un-noise are of one cut. Dream-like and ephemeral, the album as a whole fights the twelfth, as dull throbbing grows from resolute aching to buzzing, twitching cacophony. While it’s easy to admire the transitive conviction that propels the album forward, it is Asobi Seksu’s ability to remain surprisingly grounded and catchy which really showcases their strong song-writing skills and connectedness with time and place. Full of mirth and majesty – the kind which swells in chests and puts warmth into tired, frozen minds – for indie-rock lovers, disconnecting will be all but impossible. _JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD
Year Zero / Future Noise
It’s a bit strange that British music critic Kris Needs has his name plastered on the front of this compilation. After all, a bit of internet searching makes it look like he was just in the right place at the right time when punk broke in 1976… while further research shows he was directly responsible for some of the worst techno imaginable in the early ‘90s. Despite this though, he has managed to piece together a very impressive compilation of pre-punk nuggets. ‘Nuggets’ being a key word here as the title track, Dirty Water by The Standells, was featured on the greatest rock’n’roll compilation of all time in Nuggets long before this compilation. So what makes this two-disc set so great? In just 33 songs they feature true protopunks in The Stooges, New York Dolls and MC5 beside the civil rights pushers of proto-hip hop outfit The Last Poets, electronic pioneers Suicide, Krautrockers Can, glam rock of T. Rex, Jamaican ska pioneers Culture and Aussie heroes The Saints. These are just some of the discoveries you’ll make on this highly impressive gathering of artists. If you’re in a punk band that never wants to be mentioned in the same sentence as current Aussie ‘punks’ Short Stack, Dirty Water is essential listening. _MATTHEW HOGAN
SLEEPWALKER Living Dead
LOCRIAN The Crystal World
Firestarter Distribution
Utech Records / Land Of Decay
Fresh from impressing many at their Linkin’ Park support, guitar-driven outfit Sleepwalker have a debut EP that bolts out from the blocks. Blistering title track Living Dead is an impressive, flashy, punk opener laden with duelling guitars and heavy and catchy hooks. It’s not unnecessary to say that Sleepwalker are classy as hell, they are a professional outfit. George Green’s vocals sound straight off a stage at a Soundwave tour, while the guitars effortlessly weave in and out of an unshakable and heavy back section. The recording is carefully produced but I’ve no doubt they reproduce it live. Living Dead is some very impressive stuff. As all half-decent bands should, Sleepwalker have put a lot of time and talent into their debut release. It’s dense, listenable, tight and thoughtful. Within the broad ‘heavy music’ category, these guys’ influences are evident; Paper Faith and Sleepers Beware are built on distinct At The Drive-In foundations. But, by track four, Televisionaries, Sleepwalker have defined their own sound; a loud and brash mesh of mainstream heavy rock but with all the good things that come with being technically spot-on heavy music aficionados. _DANIEL PARKINSON
D e s p a i r. T h e r e i s no emotion better encapsulated in Locrian’s third full-length, The Crystal World. And it is all-consuming. Taking on a clear literary concept, straight from the novel of the same name by J.G Ballard (1966), the Chicago-based duo Andre Foisy and Terence Hannum have once again broken self-imposed barriers in their journey to blur the lines between drone and doom, black metal and the ‘post’. Building on their ensemble with the addition of Steven Hess (On, Ural Umbo) in the percussion/electronic department, the emphasis of this two-disc set is not on crushing devastation – a trait from their previous releases – but on subtle and growing desolation. Taking a page right from Ballard’s novel itself, The Crystal World hangs as a musical replica of the dystopian tale – whereby a doctor and researcher of leprosy travels deep into the African jungle to investigate a bizarre phenomenon, a virus which is slowly crystallising the entire area and causing life to wane. This feeling of foreboding is pressed into each track, from the looping drums of the title piece to the violin, accordion and acoustic guitar lines of Elevations And Depths and the 53-minute career-defining epic Extinction – the sole offering from disc two. Beautiful and mesmerizing, an essential pick for those looking for intrigue in a sea of post-metal releases. _JESSICA WILLOUGHBY

DEAR TIME’S WASTE Spells
ODD FUTURE www.oddfuture.tumblr.com
Speak N Spell
Adding to the rich tapestry of NZ music, Auckland-based chanteuse Claire Duncan – aka Dear Time’s Waste – has more than proved she is one of her country’s most adventurous and accomplished songwriters with debut LP Spells. Highly literate and darkly romantic, Duncan’s models come from the sophisticated end of popular music, matching her sublime chirp with grounded glories, which make melodic bounds and skin-prickling changes evocative of the best of Kate Bush. Duncan’s talent for soul-baring would be frightening were it not so ingenuous; she writes from a well of fantasy and feeling with a patina of experience, her concerns universal and womanly, embracing love, sex, creativity and freedom as experience, with all the emotional complications they entail. The romantic cuts, such as they are, remain bleak and doubting, but utterly moving, with show-stopping single And So I Was Returning, proving the type of honest, uncertain, but strong love song pop music could certainly use more of. Whilst, with a voice so eerie, it may have been once difficult to imagine Dear Time’s Waste as a popular taste, on a pop scene dominated by Florences and Marinas, it’s not difficult to imagine great things in store for this promising new talent. _JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD
BRAD PAISLEY Hits Alive Arista / Sony Music
There are no shortage of ‘Country Music S u p e r s t a r s’ f l o a t i n g around the sizeable stadiums of the United States but that is not to say that they are any good. Luckily for all the Tim McGraws, Kid Rocks and the rest, there is at least the odd Brad Paisley. While your average Joe may not buy a Brad Paisley album, when presented with a greatest hits collection like Hits Alive, you can’t help but reassess that stance. The West Virginian who looks more natural out of his ten gallon hat than most of his peers, has no shortage of chart bothering moments and the wholesome Little Moments is probably the best of them. Paisley doesn’t mind planting his tongue firmly in cheek and throwing in a pop culture reference or two, which he does with ease during Celebrity and Online. Paisley has a well honed voice, considerable skill on the guitar and is well adept at the country tradition of duets. He is joined here by Dolly Parton and Alison Krauss on When I Get Where I’m Going and Whiskey Lullaby respectively. Hits Alive is evidence that in country music circles Paisley never went out of fashion.
One of the most hotly tipped outfits for 2011 is Los Angeles based babyfaced hip hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. Featuring 10 artists and headed up by Tyler (The Creator) and Earl Sweatshirt, Odd Future already has at least half a dozen releases under their belt, all of which are available for free from their website. And they’ve already made it inside such mags as The Fader, Thrasher and Dazed & Confused and ranked on year end lists on XXL. An instant head-turner is Sweatshirt’s (who has recently gone ‘missing’ or been ‘incarcerated’ a la Ol’ Dirty Bastard when he was alive) title track Earl. With the same delivery as Eminem’s breakthrough, My Name Is, Earl is dirty, highly offensive and features a video where the entire collective appear to die horrible deaths following some skating accidents and drug cocktails. A seemingly bottomless pit of beats and rhymes, you better start thinking about your Odd Future today. Key track: Earl Sweatshirt – Earl _MATTHEW HOGAN

One of the best releases of the 2000s was from Portland, Oregon’s finest three-piece SleaterK inney. Their 2005 swansong and debut on influential indie label Sub Pop, The Woods is an aural assault on the eardrums. Simply one of the heaviest rock albums of the decade, the album kicks off with The Fox – a retelling of one of Aesop’s Fables except with the added bonus of duelling Les Pauls, pounding drums and the one-two punch of Corin Tucker’s wailing vibrato and Carrie Brownstein’s powerful howl. Drawing on Zeppelin and Hendrix for inspiration, there are few albums from this century with as much raw power. Since the break-up of the riot grrrl supergroup, Tucker released her debut solo album last year, drummer Janet Weiss has been busy in Quasi, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks and Wild Flag, while Brownstein’s turned to comedy and is writing and starring in a new sitcom with Saturday Night Live star Fred Armisen called Portlandia debuting later this month. KID ROCK Born Free Top Dog / Atlantic
Occasionally you see someone’s tattoo and think, “That’s going to be hard to explain when you’re old.” Spare a thought for Kid Rock, whose entire career is a tattoo he didn’t think through, something stuck on his skin even though he’s not that guy any more. Born Free is his middle-aged attempt at grabbing a handful of authenticity, rejecting his rap-rock days in favour of hiring Rick Rubin as producer and doing his best Bon Jovi impersonation. Yes, Kid Rock is honestly trying to grow old gracefully. The guitars are electric, but they’re playing Nashville twang and they’re underscored by some sensitive piano and Kid Rock singing about how he’s, “Deep like the grandest canyon / Wild like an untamed stallion.” This is a soundtrack for the fist-pumping, guncollecting American fratboys to settle down and put on some serious weight too. Sometimes it veers away from Bon Jovi and into George Thorogood’s boot-wearing, whiskey-drinking territory, but even then he’s singing, “Today’s the day I’m gonna take things slow.” Laser surgery has removed almost every trace of the old posterboy for Parental Warning stickers Kid Rock used to be, although he does get T.I. in for an out-of-place guest verse, and he’s succeeded in becoming every bit as blandly middle-of-the-road and middle-America as he’d like to be. _JODY MACGREGOR Australia’s highest circulating Street Press
Regular readers will know the small, clever, risky movies versus the big, lumbering, homogenised tent poles is an enduring theme in this column, and this week brings a classic example. I n o n e c o r n e r we h ave L i s a Chodolenko’s talky, urbane comic drama The Kids Are All Right, where Julianne Moore and Annette Bening play a middle aged gay couple quite happy with their lot. But when their kids want to contact and befriend their biological father (Mark Ruffalo), it’s going to throw their ironically conservative lives into a little bit of turmoil, and questions about acceptance and morality collide as a result. In the other we have The Last Airbender, another $150m behemoth aided by the marketing muscle of a big studio and a big name. Unfortunately, neither helped the critical pillorying of M Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the popular cartoon. It tells the story of a quasi-Eastern world of countries cast in the images of the four elements of antiquity, some people born with the gift of controlling their element to battle enemies. Don’t listen to the bagging too much - you’ve seen most of this sort of stuff before, but it’s less an awful move than a predictable one.

American: The Bill Hicks Story
Directed by Matt Harlock and Paul Thomas Starring Bill Hicks, Steve Hicks, Kevin Booth, Dwight Slade The legend of Bill Hicks has been threatening to burst out of the underground and into the mainstream for a few years now. Knowledge of Hicks’ work used to be like a secret handshake amongst comedy fans; if someone knew his name, you could tell they took their laughs seriously. All that’s changing now, and this documentary, which has already won acclaim on the festival circuit, could, and quite frankly should, be the final push needed to put Hick’s legacy in the cultural spotlight. Even if you haven’t been exposed to Hicks’ work, you’ve felt his influence; the man casts a long shadow. Comedians such as Patton Oswalt and Lewis Black owe him a great debt, and bands as diverse as Radiohead and Tool have dedicated
albums to the man’s memory. Hicks’ purview was the comedy of anger, and he mined comic gold from whatever target drew his ire, be it religion, big government, pro-lifers, the war on drugs, censorship or plain old-fashioned hypocrisy. Hicks was never satisfied with making his audience laugh; he had a desperate need to make them think as well. A controversial but exhilarating figure, he was on the very brink of widespread fame when he was cut down by pancreatic cancer at the age of 32. British filmmakers Paul Thomas and Matt Harlock have spent a good four years putting together a film that is both a biography and a tribute, spending countless hours interviewing Hicks’ family, friends and colleagues, and countless more assembling a vast array of archival material, including bootleg video footage that will make Hicks obsessives drool. American is rich in detail, charting Hick’s rise from his suburban roots to his place as comedy’s premier agent provocateur, but we also get to see the downside; although Hicks was an ardent anti-prohibitionist, he himself felt the negative effects of substance abuse, and his problems with drugs and alcohol hampered his career and ultimately contributed to his early death. Eschewing the usual talking head and archival footage route that most documentaries follow, Harlock and Thomas have presented Hicks’ story in a cunningly animated form, using cut and paste techniques to create a kind of moving photo montage. It’s fitting that the filmmakers have stretched themselves in presenting the story of a man that always tried to push the envelope in his own art, and in doing so they’ve given the film an unexpected and pleasing visual palette that’s well above the usual stylings of the genre. American is by no means exhaustive, steering clear of some of the darker and more controversial areas of Hicks’ life. It’s an obvious failing, albeit a minor one. All up, the film is a remarkable and ambitious piece of work. Whether you’re already a fully paid up member of the Church of Bill or a newcomer to the congregation, this is a worthy primer on the life of a groundbreaking comedian who remains a hero and an inspiration to many. American: The Bill Hicks Story screens at Luna Outdoor on Monday, January 17, and Tuesday, January 18. Bookings can be made through lunapalace.com.au. _TRAVIS JOHNSON

PERTH FESTIVAL VISUAL ARTS In The Eye Of The Beholder The Perth Festival’s Visual Arts program includes a variety of exhibitions on show at various locations from Saturday, January 29, to Friday, April 8. Find out more about what’s on, when and where at perthfestival.com.au/ events/visual-arts. Contrary to its classifying name, Visual Arts should not only entertain the eyes but also serve as a feast for all senses while framing an interactive and stimulating environment that incites thought and reflection. Margaret Moore, the curator of the visual arts program for Perth International Arts Festival, has developed an incredibly diverse yet cohesive array of works that incorporates all manner of Visual Arts subsidiaries, be they photographic, installation, film or otherwise. “All the works are very different and all the artists are very different but I wanted to bring some form of continuous energy throughout the program, Moore reflects. “If people get to more than one or two exhibitions they should start to see that there are some connections. There’s a theme around environment and public art and working in and with the landscape and then the second layer of the program is much more to do with human condition and emotion and gender. An exciting component in the program is the innovative structural work of esteemed artist Tomas Saraceno. His creation of Cloud City for PIAF will mark his artistic debut in Australia though his inspiring, forwardthinking works have long been met with much international acclaim and commendation. The final product will be enriching not only for Moore who has worked extensively on this pursuit but also for the audience who will be treated to something truly revolutionary. “It’s been a long journey of working very closely with Tomas, from when I pursued him from my experience of his work in Venice nearly two years ago to seeing him in France early last year. Since then he’s been here for site visits so it’s been a real journey together to create something quite new. Seeing that come to fruition will be incredibly rewarding and it’s exciting to be able to share it, Moore reveals. Cloud City proposes an empowering and poetic use of space that explores possible visions of a superior world and society by
Cloud City by Tomas Saraceno runs from Saturday, February 19, ’til Sunday, February 27, at Langley Park West End
generating utopian habitual ideas, all while defying traditional notions of space, time, gravity and perception. “It takes you into that realm of fantasy, but at the base of it has a serious hint at the way we move around and inhabit our world and the way we touch the earth, along with environmental futures like solar energy, so it has a fantastical nature at one level but who knows it may become real in the years to come.â€? At the opposite aesthetic end, yet no less interactive, are the photographic exhibitions. Jesse Burke’s Low presents touching portraits of homeless men punctuated with studies of plants, each displayed against dominant black backgrounds. These images not only poignantly encapsulate the vulnerability of masculinity but also function to shed a light of nobility on the unique, ostracised subjects. “You don’t often expect to see images of homeless men down on their luck in a more heroic pose, situated in a gallery, and you can’t help but be drawn into the faces and the emotions and the emancipation‌ it’s quite powerful and very beautiful.â€? Moore remarks.
The striking contrast between the brightly illuminated physical form and the dark, sleek backdrop is dramatic and prepossessing. Showcasing a different interpretation of beauty are the beguiling, delicately handcoloured photographs presented by Nathalie Daoust in her exhibit Frozen In Time, which are testament to her days spent in Switzerland and her response to the magnificence of the surrounding landscape. An entirely different perceptible experience is in John Gerrard’s self-dubbed ‘virtual sculptures’, through which he employs video game technology, Real Time 3D to present slow moving images of vast American landscapes. “ The way he’s using gaming technology is extraordinarily interesting and intriguing - how it’s made and what it does to your nature of time. I’m sure there are a lot of people that have used xboxes or PlayStations that will think ‘wow, this artist is using that kind of technology in a really unusual way!’. Gerrard photographs each site from a full 360-degree radius before employing Real Time
3D technology, digital scanning and animation to transform the photographic stills into mesmerizingly seamless, cinematic panning shots. Another highlight is Genevieve Thauvette’s exhibition Beheld, on display at the Perth Centre For Photography, which features self portraits of the artist in the guises of important women from history. With many more exhibitions in store the Visual Arts program is entirely comprehensive and artfully conceived with events to suit any age, penchant and inclination. “The program isn’t alienating for anyone‌ It will be really stimulating but also enjoyable for people that aren’t necessarily art followers. “I don’t really mind what that response is, even if it’s a negative response as it means they’ve engaged with the work, so I’m hoping that it will enter peoples’ lives and make them think.â€? _JESSICA DONOVAN

In the United States alone, 20 million surgeries are conducted each year on anesthetised patients. Shockingly, up to 40,000 of those patients experience anesthesia awareness, a phenomenon where patients wake up during surgery but are unable to communicate the fact that they’re no longer unconscious. It’s this horrifying notion of having no control over one’s own body that forms the basis for a collaborative exhibition by local painter Matt Doust and musician Will Stoker. “Imagine going in to hospital for hip surgery or something and they prep you and they gas you and you feel dozy, then you wake up while they’re doing surgery, Doust contemplates.
“We were fascinated by the idea of being trapped in this vessel and the agony and the pain people go through is unlike anything I’ve ever heard of. We’re working on the layering process and Reins I suppose comes from the idea of when you take hold of the reins you’re in control and when you’re put under on general anesthetic you lose control, you’re in somebody else’s hands. After occupying the same share house for a few months in 2010, Doust and Stoker developed a connection as both friends and as artists, and decided to work together on a project unlike anything either had tried their hand at. “We bonded and became friendly with each other before I knew anything about his art and he knew anything about my music, Stoker shares of the collaboration. “We started hanging out then developed an admiration for each other’s work. “I had been writing new music for a solo record in his studio and we just decided we should do something together, exploit each other of sorts. We wanted to do something fresh that we weren’t used to. “I feel like we’re on a similar level but we create different kinds of artwork, Doust elaborates. “So the challenge here was to fuse and submerge the two art forms and come up with a show. “It just started off with us being detached – we were in the same space but were detached from each other. Slowly what happened is that I felt my brush kind of flowing to the tune of his music and then one day we came up with the idea to make a few paintings based on his music. Featuring five oil paintings inspired by Stoker ’s music and two video works by Doust that Stoker has created a score for, Reins also boasts an opening night performance that will see both artists step into the spotlight. “ We’ve come up with this performance piece where Will plays music and I paint, Doust reveals. “I was originally going to paint on a canvas but we’ve decided that I’m not going to make anything decent in 20 minutes so there’s no point in really painting on canvas so I’ve decided to paint on a human. I’ll be painting a human live – she’s very excited to be tortured by my brush! For the music Will has worked at creating a [score that resembles a] dreamlike state, it’s very toned down and sparse sounding. _EMMA BERGMEIER www.xpressmag.com.au

Liz Palmer, Cyril Jackson
Media Degrees
With a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) of 96, Liz Palmer had the highest mature-age score for the University of Western Australia last year. Now studying for a Bachelor’s degree with the support of a cash award from UWA, Palmer believes her success was due to her second chance at education provided by Cyril Jackson Senior Campus. At the age of 16, she was unhappy with school. After dropping out and working for a while, she heard about Cyril Jackson, a senior campus which catered for people returning to education. So began the first of many steps in what turned out to be a momentous decision – she enrolled and started year 11 again. Things didn’t go entirely smoothly at first but with the support of Cyril Jackson staff, Palmer jumped on the success train. By the age of 19, Palmer was enjoying the challenge of studying and had moved into student housing next to the school campus. “Cyril Jackson is good for students who don’t fit in,” Palmer says. “People would be surprised how many young people don’t fit into the system. At Cyril Jackson, you are treated as an adult even when

you’re not acting like one. You become how you are treated. “ Palmer says that several factors at Cyril Jackson that contributed towards her success as a student. “The teachers at Cyril Jackson are fantastic,” she says.“They’re patient and supportive even when you’re not doing your best. They’re very friendly and interested in all the students and the smaller classes make it easier to get involved. The free tutoring in the library is also fantastic.” Cyril Jackson continues to support Palmer’s university studies by allowing her to remain in student housing. “It was great to meet such a variety of people,” she says. “It broke down a lot of the stereotypes, it is so diverse, I love it.” Her decision to continue her education at Cyril Jackson has certainly paid off. Her excellent results at the end of year 12, her enrolment at UWA and a financial award towards her studies. Not bad for a student who dropped out at the age of 16. Of course, it all comes down to her motivation and persistence. To find out more about courses at Cyril Jackson, head to cyriljackson.wa.edu.au.

UNDERSTANDING MUSIC SEMINAR Learn To Play That Instrument The Understanding Music Seminar is coming to Perth for the first time. Every year, thousands of Perth residents make determined New Year’s resolutions to finally learn to play that instrument they’ve always wanted to or make some sort of musical goal. Some will succeed but many will find their enthusiasm waning as they struggle from white notes to the more difficult black notes (the sharps and flats), as endless hours of major and minor scales drag on, not to say mention those squashed black ant marks on lines of paper called ‘written music’. For some in Perth, a visiting Bostonian will be a godsend. Duncan Lorien, is coming to our town this February to show aspiring musicians how to tell their middle C from their middle finger, how to play sharps, flats, scales and chords with aplomb and even how to decipher that secret code called the musical score. Lorien’s revolutionary approach to teaching music, which he developed free from the constraints of traditional teaching methods, is one which he forged himself with surprising results. He teaches every note on the keyboard in a matter of minutes, as opposed to the weeks the traditionalists say it will take. What he does with teaching scales and chords in a few hours has been known to make those who spent months learning them the traditional way, break down in tears. Sounds amazingly insane doesn’t it? Written music is tackled with similar gusto and by the end of his three day weekend seminar, even someone who has never even touched a keyboard will be sitting at one. In front of them will be a piece of sheet music from no lesser luminary than Johann Sebastian Bach. And they will, Lorian guarantees, not only be able to read it and understand it but play it with both hands together. They won’t be lightening fast but they will understand what they are doing. Lorien’s credentials are up there with the best. He became the Deputy Head Chorister at the Royal College of Church Music in London before embarking on a ‘new age’ musical career which culminated in #1 albums in the UK charts

THE BLOODY BEETROOTS
Smashing The System As they prepare the Death Crew for another assault on Australia, Bob Rifo of the Beetroots takes some time out to chat to ALFRED GORMAN ahead of their Boiler Room appearance at the Big Day Out. As the main man behind Italian electro-punks, The Bloody Beetroots, Bob Rifo, or Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo as he is also known, has a dual love of comics and anarchistic punk mayhem. And in the last few years, he has taken the world by storm with his new take on the scorching, synthy, glitchy, Justice style electro. They established a solid reputation on the DJ circuit and gained a lot of attention with their 2009 debut album, Romborama. Pursuing his vision of a full live show, to deliver an immersive, extreme sensory experience to the audience, he realised this goal, creating a stadium spectacular: the mighty Death Crew 77 – a chaotic, audio-visual explosion, which includes drums and guitars. Rifo and co have been destroying festival stages the world over and the man himself has enjoyed the opportunity to play these big rock shows, alongside some of his (non-super) heroes. “I love it. We started playing crossover festivals this summer in Europe,” he says. “I once played with Iggy Pop & The Stooges in Belgium and it was great.” Although the movie Spiderman 3 was a bit lame, the character of Venom, a fan favourite was introduced and proved to be popular, not in a small part thanks to the awareness created by The Bloody Beetroots donning their trademark Venom masks during their performances. “Maybe the sales of the mask have increased because of us,” Rifo laughs. Now it has been announced they are restarting the Spiderman movie series and doing a Venom movie too. The prospect of a more faithful adaptation and the possibility of an epic clash between Venom and Carnage excites Rifo. “Yes, I am looking forward to the movie. I am a big fan of the comics,” he says. “I like all the layers of meaning that lie behind a mask.” Rifo has also been busy working as Bobermann, his alter-ego that has seen him release a swag of cool remixes. This pseudonym is something of a creative outlet for him and he is only too happy to reveal a little secret about the side-project. “Bobermann is a pseudonym I use to produce remixes I like for free. So now you know. I have never been paid as Bobermann,” he laughs. “I would like to develop Bobermann, but I’m currently very focused on The Bloody Beetroots. I’ve met a lot of interesting people and it’s time to find some words for what has never been said.”

Aston Harvey
Did you witness the marvellous spectacle that was Breakfest? Yes? No? Well if you didn’t, you are in for a treat. One half of British electro duo Freestylers, Aston Harvey, is making a special appearance at Japan 4, Ambar’s night of insane dancing mayhem. FYI the Freestylers are responsible for quite a few of the dancing tracks you would have been shuffling to over the last few years. Their track Push Up really got the party started and the boys have been busy recording, getting a new studio sorted and of course, touring our lovely land. They also collaborated with our very own Pendulum and Harvey recently gave us a bit of a lowdown on how Pendulum was back then: “It was like Rob in his bedroom at home, loads of Coke cans everywhere and quite student-y.” Interesting? Check out this hot shot along with fDel, Tee El, Philly Blunt and Wish on Friday, January 28, at Ambar. Doors open 10pm. Tickets $15 on door or $10 for loyalty. Sick.

STANTON WARRIORS BREAKBEAT KINGS VANDALISM
STRIKING WHILE THE IRON IS HOT
Bristol breakbeat icons Stanton Warriors are bringing their punter pleasing DJ set to Villa on Australia Day Eve to promote their new album Warriors. JOSHUA HAYES speaks with one half of the duo, Melbourne’s electronic duo Vandalism are taking on the world, quickly Dominic Butler. but definitely not quietly. YASMIN SHERIFF chats to one half of the duo, Andy Van, about the explosion of electro into the mainstream and the Ever the hard workers, Dominic Butler and Mark Yardley, better known as the Stanton Warriors, fusion based journey electro is about to embark on.
somehow manage to meet the competing demands of running their own record label, a relentless touring schedule, numerous A-list artist remix requests and long hours in the studio working on their new album. Having both grown up in West Country attending warehouse parties and illegal raves, the boys crossed paths in London where Butler was working as a record label A&R and Yardley as a sound engineer. They combined their talents and, after a number of popular underground releases, secured their reputation as one of breakbeat’s biggest acts in 2000 with their acclaimed single Da Virus. Since then, the Stanton Warriors have received praise for developing a unique sound that blends genres such as UK Garage, breakbeat, electro and hip hop. Butler attributes this to the duo’s background of warehouse parties and raves where DJs used to mix all genres together. “We’re maintaining that ethos, if you like,” he says. “We make music with all the ingredients we like.” The duo’s new album Warriors will be released later this month and Butler says it will be something special. “We’ve pushed ourselves and challenged ourselves and on a lot of tracks we tried different kinds of sounds,” he explains. “We wanted to make it a bit more ‘album-y’, if you like, tracks you can listen to and bump at home and bump in the car and also work well when we perform live. We’ve definitely got some more challenging tracks on there as opposed to just club bangers.” Their new single Get Up has been energising dance floors over the last few months and features British singer Ruby Goe and Chicago hip hop artist Hollywood Holt – two upcoming acts the Stanton Warriors collaborate with extensively on the new album. “We’ve always been good at finding artists to work with who are super-talented but maybe not super big yet,” Butler says. “We used The Streets, for example, back in 2000 on The Stanton Session before he was heard of and signed up and everything.

Stanton Warriors “It’s nice to get some raw new talent, as opposed to a lot of albums where there’s a load of big artists on there, big names that don’t always try as hard as they can because they’re big names anyway. I like the fresh raw new talent.” Having wrapped up the album, the group’s studio time is currently committed to working on remixes for the likes of M.I.A., Black Eyed Peas and Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke. Butler says their upcoming DJ set at Villa will be very “off the cuff, on the fly” with Yardley and himself remixing tracks live. “We’ve got a lot of album tracks and music we’ve been working on, club tracks that didn’t make the album, tracks by people who we consider are doing good and fresh things,” he says. “We’re coming with something slightly different, our sound’s evolved a bit and it’s a bit more exciting.” STANTON WARRIORS TUESDAY, JANUARY 25 @ VILLA
Husband and wife smash duo Cassie and Andy Van are making waves internationally, having teamed up with some of the hottest acts around. Already accustomed to the rigors of touring (Andy as one part of Madison Avenue and Cassie as a back up dancer), the duo are in hot pursuit of the overseas market, including collaborations with pop princesses and a hectic schedule ahead of them. But before the mayhem starts, they’ve been taking some well deserved time off over the Christmas, spending time on the Victorian coast before jumping into yet another international tour. And that’s the norm for the pair, averaging four international tours a year. This rigorous schedule looks only to get more intense as their singles jump up the charts and demands for their remixes increase. “All the dominoes have fallen at the same time,” Andy Van says.“Everything has happened with some really great timing and then we put the media pressure on and everything has been falling into place really beautifully.” Their dedicated effort to break into the finicky US market is paying off. “We’ve done a lot of tours and the perception of the band is a lot stronger,” he says. “It’s a great opportunity for an Australian artist to have people in Miami wanting to book you. These are aspirations that you could have, but if no-one wants to see you, you can want but not have.” In addition to touring, Vandalism have been hot on the remix trail. They recently remixed Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, which sky rocketed on the charts and landed the #1 spot on the Billboard Club Play Chart. “Katy is great because she is embracing the dance music scene,” Van says. “She personally approves the remixes of her tracks and asked us to do her next single.” As excited as they are about this, finding time to take the project on board will be a struggle with their tight schedule. Katy Perry isn’t the only pop star breaking down the barriers between pop and dance music, Jay Z and Kanye West are rumoured to have recently been recording with Connie Mitchell of Sneaky Sound System and Van is only
Vandalism too happy to share his thoughts on the movement. “We’ve had two hip hop artists approach us [for remixes], I can’t mention who,” he says. “Electro is really exploding in America. It’s kinda like they are looking and going; ‘We can’t look in America for dance artists, we have to go to Australia and Europe’. It’s good news for Australian artists who have been breaking the scene for years.” Not surprisingly, Vandalism recently teamed up with American producer and DJ Static Revenger to give us the heavy pop tune Vegas which is slowly creeping up the charts. Not only this, they’ve also just finished a remix for Flo Rida. But Andy Van says Vandalism isn’t all about working with just the US heavy hitters. “We are really open to working with anyone who truly embraces dance music,” he says. Van then goes on to reveal the duo’s crush on Lady Gaga. “We’d love to work with her,” Van says. “She is definitely someone who is embracing the club scene on a big level.” VANDALISM SATURDAY, JANUARY 29 @ METRO CITY

THE BLOODY BEETROOTSS With their music and live show, The Bloody Beetroots have taken things to the next level. DJ and Ed Banger label head honcho, Busy P, was in fact quoted as saying that the sort of stuff they’re doing ‘isn’t dance music anymore’ and Rifo agrees. “I thank him for reiterating the concept,” he says. “I don’t think it’s ever been ‘dance’. I believe that this new electro wave has attracted many labels, there was a lot of confusion about how to describe it. “Ninety per cent of the people who produce this kind of unlabeled music used to be punks, rockers and blah blah blah. For me it was a way to merge what I thought/felt with what could be done with modern machines.” Growing up, Rifo had varied tastes in music, with diverse influences and you can see how the Beetroots flavour evolved. “My three biggest influences are classical music, punk and old school electro,” Rifo explains. But he also admires the more adventurous music makers pushing boundaries today. “I think Diplo is one of the best producers on this scene,” he adds. While a few years ago there seemed to be a lot of attention on French electro music, there now seems to be a spotlight on Italy with a lot of fresh, new sounds coming out and The Bloody Beetroots appear to be at the forefront of that new wave. The scene is thriving at the moment, with acts like Crookers blowing up big time and new and exciting artists emerging
WILLIE MORALES ON A MISSION
The Bloody Beetroots every month. This prolific wave of enthusiasm and energy can be attributed to what Rifo views as a general unrest in society and lust for change. “Many things are happening in Italy, I think every level of society is having a revolution,” he says. “Every time I come home I see the chaos. People are tired and are looking for new ways to rebel. There are some great acts coming out of Italy. Congo-rock is rockin’ the world.” While on the surface it may seem like hedonistic, extreme party music, Rifo’s motivations are quite subversive: he started as a guitarist in a punk band and that punk ethos is still intrinsic in his music, which has at times got him into trouble. With this anti-establishment, anarchistic mentality, it is interesting to hear
what he thinks about the whole WikiLeaks scandal. Is it dangerous and playing with fire or is it just exposing the lies inherent in the system? “I am not alone,” he says in reply. “Many people need change. ‘Fuck off’ is always a good word to say when things are not as they should be. Assange is the example of modern rebellion. People are tired of lies, we need content and truth. Know, learn and destroy.”
Willie Morales is a busy man. Alongside DJing and producing all over the globe, Morales is heavily involved with Juicy Music On Tour alongside good friend and well renowned DJ, Robbie Rivera. He also manages one of the biggest independent dance music labels in the US, Juicy Music. ANNABEL MACLEAN chats to Morales about bringing Juicy Music to Australia for the first time and why he’s at the point where he’d be happy to give his music out for free.

Responsible for some of the world’s biggest parties in Miami and Ibiza, party starters Juicy Music are bringing their dance music flavour to our shores. Performing alongside Morales for the national club tour is Columbian born DJ and producer David Solano, Florida’s Tony Puccio and Melbourne’s Sebastian Morxx. Morales is enthusiastic on the other end of the phoneline in Melbourne, with only positive things to say about the clubbing scene and reception Juicy Music On Tour has received so far. “It’s been great,” he says. “People always tell us when we travel, ‘oh I don’t know if people are going to like the music as much, they’re used to hearing you guys play underground and really hard’ and it seems like when we play there’s no problem. Everyone loves it. But Morales has noticed a few differences between the US and Australia with regards to the clubbing scene. “It’s not as much about bringing the bigger DJs here,” he says.“Every night in the US, the clubs bring an international DJ. I notice here there is more local DJs playing.” Rivera and Morales met in a record store in Miami over 15 years ago, a time which Morales describes as “right when it started changing over from guys being DJs to the only way you could get work was if you were in production.” He says he was lucky enough to get involved with production while there was still money to be made in music. “Nowadays, all you need is a laptop and one piece of software and that’s it, you can make a song.” Although the advancement of technology might sound positive, it does have negative effects on the industry and artists themselves. “A lot of people don’t realise, you put in a lot of work into putting out music,” he says. “Nowadays, a track has a shelf life of two or three weeks and then everybody has forgotten it. There’s so much music floating in the market, good and bad. It’s almost like a race to see who can put out the most music to get the gigs because that’s what it’s all about now; you produce to get your gig. “I feel it is almost at a point where producers are just going to make their music and just keep it for themselves. If there’s not money in music then why bother putting it out? I’m at the point where I would just want to put it out for free because it happens anyway so I might as well give it away free and be the pioneer.” And a pioneer he is, declaring his New Year’s resolution at the end of the interview: “My goal is do more collaborations with people. Since we’ve been in Australia, we’ve already done three tracks together. When I get back to Miami, I’m going to pull out all my contacts and see who wants to work together. It’s fun working with other artists because one: you learn new things and two: they bring something to the song that maybe you didn’t.” WILLIE MORALES JUICY ON TOUR FRIDAY, JANUARY 14 @ METRO CITY

SUMMADAYZE: TRASH AND TREASURE DAVID GUETTA / ARMIN VAN BUUREN / N.E.R.D / CHROMEO / many more The Esplanade Saturday, January 8, 2011 Summadayze 2011 made the switch from the usual Sunday to the Saturday, which meant it fell a week later than it normally would, but why the low attendance? As one approached the Esplanade, it became obvious that the police were out in force, cracking down on heathen gangs of youths walking down the street. Despite an unusually moderate temperature of 31 degrees, the crowd was very slow to arrive and as 4pm passed there was still an abundance of standing room everywhere you went. Where in the past artists like Armin van Buuren and Ian Carey have graced the 3pm time slot, there was seemingly nothing to entice the punters in early this year. Unfortunately somebody forgot to tell Boys Noize on the main stage. His unbridled enthusiasm behind the deck was infectious as he dropped a jaw-smashing array of funky ass beats to a steadily growing audience. Some of the crowd were unfortunately indifferent to his efforts but this didn’t stop him laying it down in an impressive hour of power. By 5pm, the imposing Future Music tent was sparsely populated as Breakbot attempted to bust out some phat beats to yet another disinterested crowd. Although the tracks were insanely heavy and worth a boogie, Breakbot had his head stuck in his laptop the whole time and by not engaging the crowd, people rightfully lost interest and moved on. Back on the main stage, the predictably irritating hip hop crew N.E.R.D brilliantly demonstrated why hip hop acts do not belong at a dance music festival. As 2 Live Crew bombed at Breakfest, today was N.E.R.D’s time with the biggest applause being when they finished. One of the most disruptive influences that affected the main stage was the seemingly haphazard way the artists were arranged. There was no flow of artists or their differing styles and there was a 10 to 15 minute break changing over each artist from early in the day. This lack of fluency in timing or styles was a definite dampener on proceedings. As 6pm approached it became clear who the drawcards were for the day and from the outset one could feel that Armin van Buuren was about to unleash something special on the hopeful and unsuspecting alike. His mixing was seamless, his track selection nothing short of perfection from the timeless such as Communication to the brilliant Alex M.O.R.P.H remix of Broken Tonight which sent the dance floor into low earth orbit when the build up finally dropped. Buuren delivered a breathtaking performance which was by far his most impressive festival set played in Perth. Canadian electrofunk duo Chromeo delivered an entertaining set, featuring all the crowd pleasers from recent album Business Casual. The biggest build up and subsequent disappointment of the day has to go to David Guetta. The vast majority of those in attendance had swarmed to the main stage in eager anticipation yet if starting 15 minutes late wasn’t bad enough, the crowd was then subjected to what can only be described as wholesale desecration of his once powerful tracks. His most identifiable songs were rendered almost unrecognisable by his cringe worthy “mixing” and it wasn’t long before a good proportion of the crowd showed their disdain and headed over to the other stages leaving Guetta to perhaps wonder where he went wrong. There is no doubt the man is a talented and forward thinking producer but this doesn’t automatically transcend into shit hot live performer. Sometimes less is more, this not only applies in the studio but also on stage. Art vs Science managed to fill the Future Tent for the first time all day and despite being another questionable addition to the lineup, the crowd appeared to relish in their unique sound as they closed out the evening. Beginning with a rather modest crowd, Riva Starr shone brightly enticing many disenchanted punters to stay a while longer and get on down to the dance floor which by the end was considerably impressive. Covering an extensive array of varying house hybrids, the beats kept rolling in what was an entertaining not to mention funky way to end the night. In a testament to the promoters, Summadayze 2011 could’ve been a complete disaster but due to the professionalism and resourcefulness, the day was still an absolute spanker and thoroughly enjoyed by the majority of those who attended. Toilet, drink and food queues were minimal, there was little to no sound clashes despite all being crammed into the Esplanade and the staff were all very helpful and friendly. 2011 appears to be the year when the envelope was perhaps pushed a bit too far in relation to the diversity of acts on the lineup and the proof was undeniably obvious. Perhaps what is needed is a return to the core roots of what made Summadayze such an amazing event in the past; dance music. Hip hop, pop and rock have their place but it sure ain’t at Summadayze. The legend has also worked with the famous Kanye West on the track Two Words from the album The College Dropout as well as two tracks from West’s third album Graduation. The man is huge, there simply isn’t enough room to delightfully regurgitate his CV on this miniscule piece of paper. Know this: he cancelled a couple of years ago and fans were mega disappointed about the whole affair. That was intended to be his first trip to Perth so now this weekend marks his debut visit to our town. Time to go and join in the celebrations! HOMETOWN GLORY
DARKEST HOUR / Carnifex / Gallows For Grace / Make Them Suffer
GRIM FANDANGO / Emperors / Goodnight Tiger
Amplifier Bar Sunday, January 9, 2011 Well, to tell you the truth, it was a pretty average gig. That’s not the fault of the musical talent involved, though; the bands are blameless. No, if we’re going point the finger at anyone, it has to be the crowd. Perth’s metal scene has always had a reputation for attracting the most enthusiastic and committed of punters, a veritable army of the black clad, long haired and disenfranchised. Judging by the turnout on Sunday night, that’s no longer the case. By the time the headliners mounted the Amp’s tiny stage, there were only a hundred or so in attendance, maybe less. Coupled with lengthy delays between sets, it robbed the night of much of its power and energy. Local talent Make Them Suffer and Gallows For Grace managed to wring some appreciation out of the early crowd, but that’s hardly surprising considering it seemed to be mostly comprised of their friends and supporters. It’s a damn shame; a prestigious support slot like this should mean exposure to a wider audience, and they both deserve it. Gallows For Grace, in particular, have the musical muscle to take it to the next level. They’ve got the rare mix of precision and passion that is essential to the true metal sound, and with a bit of work on their stage presence they could make some real waves in the scene. At the moment, though, it’s jarring to hear vocalist Blake Simpson’s polite, boyish voice bantering with the crowd before switching back to the standard issue death-growl for another aural assault. A bit more attention to showmanship should work wonders. Carnifex mounted the stage ready to bring the noise in no uncertain terms, with frontman Scott Lewis doing his damnedest to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Powering through a set that drew heavily from recent album Hell Chose Me, the band refused to let the small stage limit the ferocity of their performance, delivering a dose of speed, aggression and noise that finally got the punters going. Special props go to the guy busting capoiera moves in the mosh pit; definitely something you don’t see everyday.
Darkest Hour (photo: Matthew Hogan)
The Den Saturday January 8, 2011 Forty-five minutes walk from Wellington Street Station, through the wall-crumblingly run-down Northbridge area, continuing past the glossy, glitzy city bars of the Mt Lawley cultural nexus, lies The Den. Home to an increasing number of club nights and gigs since its opening last April, it retains the essence of a great Australian music venue – the beer is throat-icingly cold, the sunken dance floor endearingly small, and, most pertinent of all, the music is top notch. Here tonight, on the first weekend proper of the New Year, in front of a crowd boasting more flat caps and sleeve tatts than a Tommy Lee convention, WA’s (arguably) mostloved punk-rockabilly quartet Grim Fandango welcomed a new year of music with their first headlining show of 2011. Af ter a whirlwind year, which culminated in an invitation to take to the stage at last week’s Southbound festival, Goodnight Tiger’s short support performance tonight proved the lovely indie-pop duo remain committed to form in 2011, delivering a knockout performance which expertly worked the territory between folk and pop. Cool and clever without being contrived, their sharp, commercially astute pop music ebbed and flowed to the rhythm of a very human pulse, which is sure to keep pounding for a good time to come. Channelling the weirder darkness of acts like Smashing Pumpkins, Autolux and Silversun Pickups, local rock faves Emperors’ 45-minute set came off as something of an aural spiderweb: glinty, silvery, and vaguely treacherous,
entrapping punters with their polish-to-shine modern rock mix of clever lyrics, endearingly cracked vocals and treble-gutted riffs. Although it has been nearly five years since local intellipunks Grim Fandango first set to work spreading their secret hardcorerockabilly brew, tonight’s glow-burstingly fun-filled performance stood testament to the enigmatic ensemble’s omnipresent ability to get the crowd toasting the contents of their frosty glasses into the air like booze-spurting geysers. Duly dispensing with older fan favourites before the show got to pint-refill point, for the most part the enigmatic ensemble concentrated on rolling out tunes from latest LP Birthmark Blues with shots of adrenalin that burnt like whiskey on an empty stomach. Removing hands from pockets and feet from floor, their seared vocals, choppy guitars, and pounding rhythm section proved prime moshpit material, particularly when hauling out the sociopathic blasting of Life, In The Absence Of and happy goon stampede of countrified punkjam Horseland, which saw the talented quartet confidently soar above the trappings of their hardcore roots. Only time will tell whether the brilliant band continues down the more daring path and completely leave hardcore in their dirty rear view mirror, or play it safe by returning to the midtempo punk-rock tracks that have built audience loyalty locally. Either way, Grim Fandango is a band capable of displaying all that a dedicated underground local band can do – for that, we should all raise a glass.
Finally, Darkest Hour finished off the night with a concentrated burst of explosive savagery, barely pausing between songs as they struggled to jam as much as they could into what felt like a truncated slot. Singer John Henry alternately prowled and leapt about the stage, accusatory finger pointed skyward, as he exhorted us to “Get fuckin’ rowdy, Perth!” The band has always brought a sense of the epic to their sound, intricate melody paralleled with _JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD hardcore grind, and their ferocious presence filled the sparsely populated room. But there was sense that they were racing the clock, desperate to cram in all they could before the midnight deadline. Sadly, that meant no encore. In the end it was a good night, but not a great one. It’s always great when international acts of this calibre deign to grace THEE OH SEES / Sabre Tooth Tigers / Astral Travel us with our presence, but in this instance the Dwyer, who pulled his signature fuzzed out riffs question remains: metalheads of Perth, where Amplifier Bar Saturday, January 8, 2011 with his instrument wrapped around his ears. the hell were you? THE SHAPE OF PERTH TO COME Short, fast, proud
This week sees the launch of a compilation featuring a staggering 33 bands entitled The Shape Of Punk To Come. Known around town for being a promoter, band manager, co-owner of the Rest In Punk label and frontman of The Creeps, Adam Hall compiled the compilation to raise awareness of Perth’s thriving punk and hardcore scene. “We get a fair few crew coming to local shows but nowhere near as many as when big acts come to town,” Hall explains. “My aim is to get this CD into those people’s hands and hopefully they will hear something they like and we’ll start seeing some new faces at shows.” The cover art, and title for that matter, is very reminiscent of Swedish hardcore heroes Refused’s classic album The Shape Of Punk To Come except with one minor exception – all of the pictures appear to have been taken at the Hyde Park Hotel, which closed its doors just over a year ago. “There are always places to play but they are never the same as the Hydey,” Hall reflects. “I think everyone remembers the first time they played there, and it just had such a good vibe. It’s hard to explain but it was like Perth’s CBGBs you know – it was a bit of a dump but we loved it; everyone has heaps of memories and saw so many bands growing up.” While the compilation features bands still on the up and up like Blazin’ Entrails, Chainsaw Hookers and The Decline, it also has a few tracks of bands from Perth’s past like PC Thug, Homicides and Standard Deviants. “A big part of punk for me has always been the history behind it so I thought it would be good to have some iconic Perth bands on there to show the younger crew where a lot of the bands around today started out.” The Shape Of Punk To Come will be launched at Oh Snap at Black Bettys tonight, Thursday, January 13, with The Creeps, The Reptilians and The Proletariate; and at the Civic Hotel tomorrow, Friday, January 14, with The Lungs, Chainsaw Hookers, Battletruk, Bible Bashers and Blazin’ Entrails. Hall has also started work on The Shape Of Perth To Come Volume 2 and interested bands can email him at 2fast4lovemusic@mail.com. _MATTHEW HOGAN

Health
A travelling troubadour like no other, Canadianborn American singer/songwriter Steve Poltz is best known for his work fronting The Rugburns and also for penning the Jewel song You Were Meant For Me. Currently playing shows over east with Broken Social Scene members Jason Collette, he heads to Perth next week for three shows: Manhattan’s on Tuesday, January 18; the opening of Yo Yo Studio in Osborne Park on Wednesday, January 19; and Mojo’s Bar on Thursday, January 20.

BEX’S OPEN MIC NIGHT
HEALTH
It was less than a year ago when Health made their debut appearance in Perth and their performance at the Beck’s Music Box left us all wanting more! A highly visual set of non stop effects, complicated drumming and more, the LA noise band is a band that has to be seen to be believed. Since their last stop, the four-piece has released their second remix album, Disco2, featuring the infectious single USA Boys. You will love each other – come see Health this Friday, January 14, at The Bakery with support from Injured Ninja and The Wednesday Society! Woo!

Takamine G Series – New Yorker Guitars
GUITAR GOLDMINE One of the finest acoustic guitar brands on the market today, Takamine have built a name on quality and with endorsements from artists as diverse as Jon Bon Jovi, Glenn Frey from The Eagles, Richard Bernstein of Rammstein, Troy Casser-Daley, Glenn Hansard and Benji & Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. And it’s easy to see why. The Japanese guitar manufacturer has just revealed their brand new G Series models and, by gum, they look and sound sweet. The Takamine G Series Dreadnought Cutaways feature a solid spruce top, three-piece rosewood and quilted maple back, abalone rosette, rosewood fretboard with deluxe inlays, maple body binding, CP102C pick-up, TP-4T preamp, gold machines with black buttons and are available in VS-Vintage Sunburst or Natural Gloss in both right and left handed varieties. For those with no need for access to the shredding parts the fretboard, the Takamine G Series New Yorker Guitars should provide what you’re looking for with a similar list of features to the Dreadnought ones. Best of all, these guitars start at a mere $799 and the most expensive ones are only $849. That means you get a high quality acoustic/ electric guitar for a fraction of the price of many other manufacturers. Since 1978, Takamine have been
Australia’s highest circulating Street Press
at the forefront of the acoustic/electric and acoustic guitar market. A leading force in the flat back guitar market, their exclusive Takamine innovation is the SoundChoice preamp system, which are interchangeable and can be swapped in less than two minutes. The TP-4T preamp is proof of this and it features a gain knob, a builtin tuner, an active shelving system EQ with bass, middle and treble frequency slider controls and a low battery light so you don’t hit the stage low on power. The tuner is fully chromatic and the note shown in the digital display will tell you whether to tune up or down – this means no more bum notes on stage thanks to an out of tune guitar. For all these reasons and more, Takamine is the go-to choice for all your acoustic/electric guitar needs. Takamine Guitars are distributed through Pro Music Australia. Head to promusicaustralia. com for more information or head into Advanced Music in Clarkson, Malaga and Ellenbrook; Access Music in Southern River, Joondalup and Mindarie Music, Sound Centre Music Morley, Ultra Zone Music in Geraldton, Theo’s Music Leederville or left handed shop PK’s Music in Mirrabooka to take one for a test run.
