Since the last time Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement were in Australia they: did a radio series for BBC, went to SXSW, did a sitcom for HBO, and released a couple of albums through Sub Pop among other things. Oh, and McKenzie won an Oscar this year for his work on The Muppets. No biggie. They bring their 1987 Casio DG-20 and their swag of classic comedy tracks to Challenge Stadium on Wednesday, July 18. Tickets go on sale from Ticketmaster on Tuesday, April 17, or if you’re a Frontier Member, you can score your tickets from tomorrow!

BRILLIANT BEATS

Mixing cultures, technologies and sounds from over thousands of years, Brisbane-based Didjeridu performer Adrian Fabila Tjupurrula (aka Tjupurrula) mixes Didjeribone, electronic guitar effects and a seismic sensor (which he calls a “face bass”) to serve up and dish out what he describes as “21st century Didjetronica”. The talented performer will create live samples and loop them to create songs and soundscapes that defy genre boundaries when he plays a set at the Didgeridoo Breath in Fremantle on Thursday, April 12, from 6.30pm. You can also catch Tjupurrula’s unique sounds at this year’s the Fairbridge Festival, which runs from Friday, April 13, ‘til Sunday, April 15.

STRING THEORY Having toured with the likes of Ash Grunwald, Jeff Lang, Weddings Parties Anything, Eric Bibb and Joe Henry, Melbourne-based folk/blues chanteuse Liz Stringer is set to gather her long time bandmates, and new acquisition in crack guitarist Van Walker, to create another chapter in genuine Australian music as she takes to the road to celebrate the release of her latest LP Warm In The Darkness. City folk can catch the stunning singer-songwriter on Thursday, May 31, at the Fly Trap; and Friday, June 1, at Indi Bar; while regional music lovers should click on over to lizstringer.com for full dates. Walker supports with his own set.

Steal some green dye for your mohawk and put a safety pin in your eye, because seminal UK punk band Subhumans are heading over for their first ever Australian tour. Featuring the 1981 line-up that recorded their debut EP Demolition War, the band has been busy in recent years with releases through Fat Wreck Chords and their own label Bluurg. They drop into Amplifier for a show on Wednesday, September 12. Tickets go on sale through Oztix on June 15, so you might want to set a reminder...

Dear X-Press,

So it seems Beatles’ sons James McCartney, Sean Lennon, Dhani Harrison and Zak Starkey are considering forming their own band… Here’s what our Facebook fans had to say about their supposed new project.

Emma I think it sounds like a fun idea and anyone who disagrees should lighten up don’t go pretending you wouldn’t be interested to hear what they came up with.

Kate It’s a little bit totally ERK. Leanda Only if their vocals are identical to the father’s. Thumbs up from me.

Rick They’ll need George Martin’s son if they want to do it right...The Beatles would have been stuck doing bad imitations of Motown tunes for a living without him.

How dare ya publish the letter of a knownothing whinging pom last week (Reactions #1312)? Hugh was getting his knickers in a twist over the beautiful amount of Irish at The Pogues show and he claimed that the English are to thank for the existence of the band. Well that’s just a rotten joke innut? Sure they may have formed in an English town but it was probably as some sort of gang to escape the mundane existence that is life in England and those rock throwing durty poms. Those English are good for nothing bullies with a superiority complex that stems from have a bunch of queens running their life. Royalty is good for nothing, except when it comes to Shane MacGowan, who is the only royalty I’d get on me knees for. Fuck ya Hugh, I’ll drink ya under the table any day of the week.

Sandon Let it be.

Phillip Would be awesome!

RTRFM’S IN THE PINES Where The Sun Never Shines

On Sunday, April 22, the biggest single day local music love-in returns to UWA’s Somerville Auditorium with In The Pines. Ahead of the RTRFM fundraiser, MATTHEW HOGAN chats to our front cover zombies: Todd Pickett from The Kill Devil Hills, Paul Wood from The Ghost Hotel, Rachael Khun from SMRTS, and Ben McDonald from Sonpsilo Circus. Cover image by LUKE THOMPSON. With it’s name taken from the traditional American folk song of the late 1800s, which has been interpreted by everyone from The Triffids to Nirvana, from Kid Cudi to Smog, RTRFM’s day-long fundraiser In The Pines returns to its fitting home of the Somerville Auditorium once again this year, where the sun truly never shines. One band that makes a good go of matching the dark subject matter of said song is The Kill Devil Hills. True veterans of the festival, this year will be the first time they’ve played it with their newest member, drummer Todd Pickett. Pickett has played the festival twice previously with Abbe May & The Rockin’ Pneumonia and can be seen on stages around town most every night with Blackmilk, Davey Craddock & The Spectacles, Soulfister, Dux Brothers, Ginger Nelson, solo, and whenever Kim Salmon comes to town and is looking for some hired guns to join him on stage. He says being the new guy in Perth’s most hardened band wasn’t as difficult as it might have seemed. “I’ve known most of these deadbeats for a while now, so it wasn’t as full on as you might think for someone who, before meeting them, was a huge fanboy,” says Pickett, who can be seen on the cover wearing the band’s trademark attire, a bloodied flannelette shirt.“They look tough, but that’s just a front. They’re soft as cream.” Pickett also dropped some information about The Kill Devil Hill’s long-awaited follow-up to Man,You Should Explode.“In a few weeks we’re fleeing to the hills for band camp, for some writing/fishing/pillow fighting fun that the Kills are known for,” he reveals. “Maybe a triple platinum album will come of it and I can finally afford that gold helicopter I’ve promised my girlfriend. Who’s to know?” One band that’s recently become one step closer to that gold helicopter is The Ghost Hotel, who have just released their debut album Maiden Hill to rave reviews. Seen wearing an orange sweater on the X-Press

10

cover, Paul Wood brought his own weeping wounds to the shoot.“Recording that tripe took two painful years of my life I’ll never get back,”Wood says.“Being stuck in the studio with those douchebags, Parko included, was too horrible to put into words. I’m still in therapy twice a week because of it and I still can’t see out of my left eye. But despite all that, Gibbo, Jake, Stevie and Matty G went in together and bought me a Mars Bar last month, so all was forgiven and we went ahead and planned the tour.” This year’s In The Pines will be The Ghost Hotel’s second appearance at the fest, but Wood has been seen on the Somerville stage many-a-time fronting Red Jezebel. Wood says he’s been hounded by reporters in regards to that band’s much anticipated third album in recent weeks.“We’ve got a big ol’ rocket we’re gonna shove up our butts and finish it this year for an early release in the next,” he says. “That’s what I tell people, only because I don’t have the heart to break it to them that we’ve broken up. Parko’s running a daily ‘ladies night’ out of Blackbird, Cruigy’s refusing to play music altogether since what we refer to as ‘the incident’ and Alex has since taken a gig drumming for the reformation of Green Jellÿ. “But don’t put any of this in the article, hey,” he whispers.“Just say we’ve been really productive and I already showed you the demos, you thought it was the greatest thing you’d ever heard then we made out a little.” SMRTS are in the midst of one of the busiest periods in their short career, as they’ve just returned from an east coast tour and they’re launching their second album, Have Friends And Visit Them At Night, in Perth a couple of days before In The Pines. One of the band’s many guitarists, Rachael Khan tells us about their time in Sydney and Melbourne. “We met some of the nicest people in bands, whose generosity was gratefully accepted when you need three amps and two drum kits,” says Khan, who can be seen fresh from

In The Pines (Photo: Luke Thompson, Makeup by Nola Pearce and Ali Price @ Trauma Sim, Costumes by Claire Muella) the dentist’s chair on our cover. “Generally after a few songs people would drop their pretensions about an unknown band and start dancing and getting into it, which I guess is one of the advantages of being instrumental. And then after the gig they’d come and chat to us, wishing they’d brought earplugs and bemoaning their hearing.” SMRTS are making their second appearance at the festival this year, and for those who recall their debut in 2010, you’d know they have their work cut out for them this time around.“There’s footage on YouTube of some guy doing spinning kicks at all the right cues during our set, and generally dancing and ground excavating on the people behind him sitting on picnic mats,” recalls Khan. “I hope we can encourage such debauched movement this year when we play, or else Pex will ask you to come up to the stage anyway.”

Making their debut this year is none other than psych merchants Sonpsilo Circus. They released an excellent debut EP last year, and this year they’ve got another release in store.“We’ve just begun work on an album which should come out sometime this year if all goes to plan,” says fiery-haired bassist Ben McDonald. “I think it might surprise those that think they have us figured out - we’re pretty excited about it.” The band has prepared for their Pines debut by playing to the toughest audiences of all; high school students.“Yeah we have! It’s through WAM and they’re so much fun, the kids are the best and, at the same time, the most daunting audience, but they’re always cool and we’ve had great responses,” says McDonald. “Our last school gig was at Cecil Andrews Senior High School, there was a workshop afterwards and the kids were simply awesome, we all had a big laugh!”

THE HERD Ebbs and Flows

Sydney hip hop behemoths The Herd are back in town this weekend for the WA leg of their national A Thousand Lives tour. See them at Settlers Tavern on Friday, April 13; and the Rosemount Hotel on Saturday, April 14. JOSHUA HAYES speaks with Shannon Kennedy, aka Ozi Batla. With so many members – eight to be precise – The Herd’s level of activity inevitably ebbs and flows between group releases and solo projects. During the most recent break, following 2008’s Summerland, Shannon Kennedy released his solo debut Wild Colonial. However, The Herd are back and busy as ever, with their fifth album Future Shade released last year. “It’s like your favourite old pair of shoes; just slip them on and away you go. It’s like you’ve

12

The Herd never been apart,” the man known as Ozi Batla says of reuniting as The Herd. “It’s the same with any good friendships or good relationships; you can take time away from each other and pretty much pick up where you left off. That’s usually how it is with us.” The tour will be worthwhile for long time followers of the group. “We’re reworking the set to include a lot of older tracks that we like that we haven’t had the space to put in the set [recently],” he says. “There’ll be a few remixes and a few surprises for fans.” The group recently released the Better Alive

EP to coincide with the tour. It consists of a new single – the title track, featuring their fellow touring acts, Thundamentals and Sky’High – as well as two remixes and four unreleased tracks from the Future Shade sessions. Last year, as they celebrated a decade together, members of The Herd began pulling together old photos, posters and video footage, which will form the basis of a visual component to their upcoming shows. “There’s a lot of archival stuff that we’ve been digging out lately,” Kennedy says. “I think the 10 year anniversary was cause for reflection for us. When you’re performing all the time or putting out a record, doing one or the other, it just kind of blur into one, so it’s nice to have those documents to remember… what we’ve done and where we’ve been.” The tour is a major achievement for Kennedy, after a bike accident on Christmas Eve left him hospitalised with a punctured bladder and a dislocated jaw. He says he has recovered “more or less; enough to perform, anyway. It will be a bit of an ongoing process, but definitely feeling a lot better than I did a month ago.” The accident led to a reality web series in which Thundamentals are blamed for sabotaging Kennedy’s bike. “I think it’s just highlighting how multifaceted and talented we all are. We’re really pretty fine actors as well, I think you’ll have to agree,” Kennedy deadpans. Fine actors may be a dubious claim, but there’s no doubting how multifaceted and talented The Herd are. Local hip hop heads would be well advised to catch the group’s latest show, before they ebb away again.

Miike Snow

MIIKESNOW Happy To Meet You

Following on from their eponymously titled first album, Swedish dream team Miike Snow’s recently released sophomore LP Happy To You is, in the words of band member Andrew Wyatt, a“gift to their pretty loyal fans”.JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD reports. Talk about a scorching show. As vocalist Andrew Wyatt recounts the Swedes’ comeback gig (after 12 months away from the stage) at a photo museum was halted for an hour after two songs, when their smoke machine set off the fire alarm. “We had just about every imaginable problem occur during that show – our stage hand fell off the stage during sound check. Then, only two songs in we had to stop playing because the fire alarm was set off by the smoke machines. We had kindly ask the 700 or so people standing around to wait for it to stop before we started playing again. 40 minutes later no one had left, which was a nice boost for the ego,”Wyatt laughs. “Other than that... it seemed to end up a pretty good show, which was received fairly positively. Afterwards, one of our friends said to us ‘it’s better that this happened during your first show – it’s better to get the disasters out of the way’ and I think that’s a good way to think about it.” While there are countless recorded incidents of other musicians kicking up a stink when finding themselves in similar situations – retreating to the comforts of their backstage dressing rooms during the delay or, in some rare instances, even refusing to finish their sets – Wyatt and his bandmates Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg used the 40 minutes to mingle with the crowd, as well as posing for photos and signing albums and t-shirts for eager fans. While the trio’s level of dedication may be surprising, long-time fans of Miike Snow would likely find themselves unsurprised by this anecdote. Thanks to their use of social networking sites, the barrier between the trio and their audience is almost nonexistent. Throughout 2011, the trio used their official Facebook page to keep fans up-to-date and in late December, the band announced that their second full-length album, Happy To You, would be released in March 2012. They also said that there would be no upcoming information on anything involving “Devil’s Work”, foreshadowing the release of their first single from the album (aptly entitled Devil’s Work). “If you didn’t follow us on Facebook you might have thought ‘hey, I haven’t heard about that Miike Snow band in ages, I wonder what they’ve been up to in the interim?’,” Wyatt says. “Well, all we’ve been doing is Miike Snow in the interim. We spent the first two years touring and the third making a record. We haven’t just been sitting around; we’ve barely had a break.” Despite only having been “officially” released for a week now, Happy To You has already garnered unadulterated praise from critics across the globe.“It’s easy to get used to that attention, but it has a dangerous side in that the attention can always be pulled back,” Wyatt concludes.“I think it’s safer to think about what we can give to listeners, not what they can give to us.”

CALLING ALL CARS It’s A Knockout

Aussie rockers Calling All Cars are back in WA for their final headline tour of the year, playing the Indi Bar on Thursday, April 19; Prince Of Wales on Friday, April 20; and the Rosemount Hotel on Saturday, April 21. BEN WATSON spoke to frontman Haydn Ing, who recently regained consciousness. Haydn Ing is pretty much a music journalist’s dream. A true raconteur, all it takes is the smallest amount of prodding, and he will happily regale with stories of his own adventures. When he spoke to X-Press last week, he’d been talking all day, and was happy to keep going.

If there’s one thing Calling All Cars are known for, it’s their constant touring schedule. Naturally, Ing has picked up a million stories along the way. The latest? He got knocked clean out two songs into the second set of their east coast Big Day Out run. “I asked a friend to get up and play guitar for us for that song,” he begins. “So it just freed me up so I’m just singing and jump around and climb shit and all that. The crowd was going off – a really good mosh pit and all that kind of stuff – so I was getting very excited and jumped into the crowd and was crowd surfing and singing and all was going well. “And I kinda fell through the crowd, so I stood up, and there was one of those circle pits forming and I thought it’d be cool to sing a song in the middle of the circle pit, so I was like running at it; and as I was running into the circle pit there was a guy running around it with his elbow out. He clocked my jaw and I just went down!” he laughs.“I was out cold for 10 to 15 minutes or so, and I woke up in a stretcher going into an ambulance with people going, ‘Do you know what city you’re in?’ and I actually had no idea. I think I guessed Melbourne, and they’re like ‘No, you’re actually in Sydney’, and I was like ‘oh wow! What happened?’. And they were like ‘Oh, you were playing a show at Big Day Out and you’ve been knocked out’ and I was like ‘Oh! Wow! Were we any good?’. “I came to on our way to the hospital. It all kinda came back to me all at once and I was like ‘Oh shit! Turn around! Turn around! I’ll go back and finish the set!’ .They were like ‘Nah, your set actually finished about 40 minutes ago, so we’re taking you to go get some scans and stuff now’.” Ing takes it all in his stride. But next week’s tour will be the last lot of shenanigans for a while.

Calling All Cars Ing reveals that ever since the Big Day Out the band has been holed up in their rehearsal studio writing for album number three. They’re 15 songs in… but they’re planning to write 50. “Yeah, like we did with the last album,” he explains. “We’re just tryin’ to write as many songs as possible, and I think we got to about 40-something songs for the last album. “Then we can trim it back and cut the fat and hopefully end up with something good. We’ve still got songs from the last album that have never really seen the light of day, but… I dunno. I always like to write something new and fresh and hopefully get something better. ‘Cause at the end of the day we’ve always got those songs to go back to.”

Justin Townes Earle

JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE Duke Of Earle

Enigmatic troubadour Justin Townes Earle has just released his fifth album Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now. CHRIS HAVERCROFT spoke to Earle about his latest slice or country music that embraces Memphis Soul. See him on Saturday, April 14, at the Fly By Night; and Sunday, April 15, at the Rosemount Hotel. It may be a career that spans a relatively short amount of years, but this will be the fifth time that Earle makes the trip to his ‘favourite tropical island’. Earle has a reputation as being someone who is constantly on the road, and his live performances ooze the kind of appeal that is only evident in hardened performers. While Earle still loves the opportunity to play his songs in front of people, he has come to a stage where he is questioning what the future holds in terms of a ‘normal home life’. “I think that the lifestyle of being on the road is very taxing. I try to make it a little more easy these days because I want to be able to put on a good show,” he says. “It is constant motion and you don’t really belong anywhere and you drift along a bit in life. I want to have somewhere stable when I am older. I need somewhere to put my Americana Music Award… and maybe kids.” Earle’s Americana Music Award that was presented to him at the Ryman Auditorium last October. While he says it is nice to be acknowledged, Earle remembers the night as a time when he got to spend time with his friends (many who are in similar bands and were at the awards) that he doesn’t get to see too often these days due to conflicting schedules. “I think that awards are great because they help a career, but they don’t help you to be an ‘artist’. I think that moving constantly and trying new things and challenges is very important. I am going to try and make sure that my records constantly change and switch back because it is exciting for me and hopefully my fans. I have a very short attention span these days.” Earle hinted at in interest in Memphis Soul music on his last album Harlem River Blues but with Nothing Is Going To Change The Way You Feel About Me Now his passion for the genre is evident. After having given his audience glimpses before, now seemed as good a time as any to embrace the soul music he grew up with as a child, noting that the chord progressions were similar to those of many country songs. “One good thing with country music at least is that in all parts of the world except for the United States it is a very broad term. In the United States when you say country music, people think of Music Row and Top 40. It is not a moniker that bothers me anywhere in the world other than the United States.” Earle takes the role as head producer on his records, but it is long term friend and piano player in Earle’s band Skylar Wilson who is responsible for running the desk and getting the sounds that Earle is trying capture. It is a partnership that has worked for some time and is likely to long continue. “He brings maths to the table,” suggests Earle of Wilson’s role on the records.“I do a certain thing solo that does not require math, it is very much second nature thing that I do and I don’t understand why the chords work the way they do. Skylar understands why they work. I think it is more that I challenge him more as I am the head producer on my records, so it is me pushing him to do more and more things. There are times when we have all these things on the tracks and I expect him to be able to find some room for the fucking horns.” 14

KATE MILLER-HEIDKE Flight Of The Chanteuse Audego

AUDEGO Like Lego

Melbourne based duo Audego are producer Paso Bionic and female vocalist Big Fella. Having just released their debut record Abominable Galaxy through MGM, ANNABEL MACLEAN chats with Big Fella, aka Carolyn Tariq, about polishing a turd, having a smoker’s cough and why she’s such a “shit” teacher.

After nearly three years away from Australia, award-winning songstress Kate Miller-Heidke returned to home soil late last month for a series of eclectic live acoustic shows. Following her show at the Astor Theatre, JENNIFER PETERSONWARD was lucky enough to spend a morning with Miller-Heidke discussing her new album Nightflight, which hits the shelves this Friday, April 13. Kate Miller-Heidke One of Australian music’s most original talents is riding high again with the hauntingly beautiful and surreal Nightflight. Kate Miller-Heidke’s unique musical repertoire has been winning her fans since 2007 when, at age 25, she received gold certification with her debut studio album Little Eve. Following double-platinum sales from her last album (2008’s Curiouser), Miller-Heidke is back with her third solo album (not including her record released under the Fatty Gets A Stylist moniker last year) Nightflight. Written between the frenetic jolt of London and the sleepy backwaters of Toowoomba, Nightflight is comprised of 11 songs about real people’s lives and cleverly weaves together hauntingly beautiful melodies with a characteristically surrealist narrative. During her recent national tour showcasing the new tunes, Miller-Heidke revealed

that the title song is a rumination on long-haul travel; while In The Dark was written about her husband/guitarist/collaborator Keir Nuttall’s grief following his grandfather’s passing. Another poignant tune, Sarah, recounts an even more haunting tale. The tune tells the tale of two young teenage girls at the Livid Festival in ’97. The two girls – the eponymous Sarah and an unnamed narrator – are dancing to Ben Folds Five when Sarah disappears into thin air. The narrator describes a frantic search for Sarah with her father overnight – but finding no trace of her friend, save for an item of Sarah’s clothing in a nearby creek. Two weeks go by and nothing is found, until suddenly Sarah turns up again out of the blue with no recollection of the past fortnight. The storyline leaves listeners lingering for more details, and the song itself is intensely haunting. “It’s based on a true story – but not my

own story. The whole situation comes from a story a friend of mine from high school – it’s her story – but she had described everything to me in such vivid detail, I felt like I was there. She actually sent me a long email last night, basically just saying ‘sorry, I can’t listen to it, it’s too hard’,” Miller-Heidke reveals. Another tune on the album, Ride This Feeling, was penned in Toowoomba at the same time the town was being ravaged by flooding, however Miller-Heidke is keen to point out the connection between her tune and the tragic events which swept through the Garden City in January last year are practically non-existent. “It’s not about the floods at all – it was just a side note that was mentioned in the press release,” she clarifies.“That’s like one tiny thing someone latched on to. I just hope that will be forgotten. It’s not about that.”

“Paso and I were in the same friend circles for a while and I’d known him for years but [he then] did a remix for one of my tracks Wonder which he did a really good job [on] and we ended up getting married after that,” Carolyn Tariq says casually down the line from Melbourne. Tariq and her husband Paso Bionic, aka Shehab Tariq, have had a pretty hectic last year, although Carolyn is modest and softly spoken when she recalls the last year which her and Paso spent creating their debut record Abominable Galaxy. “We had a kid born in December last year so most of it was recorded while I was pregnant,” she says.“It was really good because I used to smoke a lot - like a pack a day - so all my previous musical work has been recorded with me having horrible smoker’s voice and then this one I had to clean up a lot. I think it helped the music and I think I did a better job.” Although Tariq says collaborating with her husband on Abominable Galaxy was “really easy”,much of the work on the record was created individually.“We didn’t work together in the studio a lot, it was kind of like I’d do it and then he’d come home from work and then do the rest so it was just like piecing it together which was why we named ourselves Audego - like Lego - it just felt like we were building and adding little bits as we went,” she says. Mixed by hip hop heavy hitter and producer Danielsan of hip hop duo Koolism, Abominable Galaxy is a taste of silky vocals, edgy percussion and blurred synths, the result of an unusual musical collaboration which could have post-dubstep, indie, instrumental hip hop and folk fans ears’ pricked. Although classy in its delivery, the record’s song titles are questionable. Should listeners take Polish A Turd literally? “It’s obviously not literally about polishing a turd; there’s actually a deeper meaning behind it,” she explains. “Paso is such a peaceful person and I felt a bit guilty for being a mole. So it’s really about being a piece of white trash and feeling out of it in a classy situation. I had a moment of being agro and I wrote that song.” Tariq used to organise and teach songwriting to disadvantaged youth in Victoria and Queensland but it’s something she’s since moved on from. “I’m such a shit teacher,” she says, laughing half-heartedly. “You’ve got to have that commanding presence; it’s a tricky thing to be a good teacher.” For now, it’s all about being a mum for Tariq and bringing her little girl into the world of music. “She dances and I think she’s singing all the time but she’s probably just clearing her throat,” she says.“She’s always in the [home] studio… when Paso is doing turntable stuff, she’s mesmerised, it’s like her favourite thing ever.”

NICKI MINAJ Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded

THE USED Vulnerable Anger Music Group / Hopeless Records

Cashmoney Records / Universal

The runaway commercial success of debut album Pink Friday, combined with her star-making verse on Kanye West’s Monster, in addition to the New York Times recently labelling her “the most influential female rapper of all time”, means Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj’s second studio set Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded has some serious scrutiny to face. Lucky for listeners, Nicki continues to do what she does best: cross-fertilising genres and continuing to transform her musical identity without sacrificing any authenticity. Over 19 tracks, Nicki’s adventurous and massive persona is allowed to wander wherever it wants, be it avant or common. While the resulting record may be scatterbrained and bumpy, Nicki exudes an assuredness throughout, no matter what she does. She’s no longer the weird chick who has to dress herself up in weirder beats to make a mark – she can take on the Top 40 and completely own it, and she does just that on current hit single Starships. Yes, in the name of “forward thinking”, she inevitably makes some bad choices (the rude-girl posturing on Come On A Cone is, well, just bad, and her turn as the cockney mother of her alter-ego Roman Zolanski on Roman Holiday is supremely irritating), but this is only because she’s so unbridled. While everyone else inhales deeply and squeezes to fit into the pop landscape, Nicki lets it all hang out.

The Used are one of those bands with an eternally devoted massive fan-base, despite going downhill somewhere after 2004’s In Love And Death. Whether you were in touch with your emo-punk side or not, that album and 2002’s self-titled were undeniably awesome. Skip over the primarily average Lies For The Liars And Artwork, and nearly a decade on McCracken and his band have released their fifth studio album, Vulnerable, and it sure is a mixed bag. First track is the first single pulled from the album, I Come Alive, which didn’t exactly dominate the charts or the hearts of fans. The third track Hands And Faces is unequivocally the weakest and weirdest; with weird synths, auto-tune and an almost-reggae breakdown which is completely out of place. Shine goes along the same path, but with cringe-worthy lyrics: “It’s my time to shine/Do it my way.” Hardcore fans will identify with tunes like Put Me Out and Now That You’re Dead, both of which subscribe to the traditional screamy, up-tempo Used that we all know and love. In short, there’s nothing new or redeeming about this offering, but it is worth a listen to extract the good tracks. The Used are likely to be a cult band for a considerable while longer, and might not lose sleep over this album – but hopefully they take the hint and stay away from experimentation.

BEARHUG Bill, Dance, Shiner

SELAH SUE Selah Sue

Spunk

Because Music

There is nothing wildly original to be heard on Bill, Dance, Shiner, the debut LP from Sydney band Bearhug – a little Springsteen-esque romanticism, some idyllic indie ala Real Estate, some My Morning Jacket inspired lethargy and a touch of The National’s cathartic guitars for good measure. Despite this, however, there is an endearing quality to Bill, Dance, Shiner. Bathed in lo-fi production, Bearhug manage to knit together an album that sounds nostalgic, personal and slightly whimsical. The aural equivalent of grainy, super-8 home movies (and if that’s an indie-sounding image to you then you’re right on track). One of the elements that make this album work is its guitar playing. There is a fantastic interplay between the two guitar parts and – simple and sketchy when they need to be, wild and squalling when they need to be. On the single Angeline, a lolling guitar riff instantly conjures the lazy-days escapism of the tune. On Cinema West the shimmering chords get washed out with noisy reverb soaked guitar. It’s a particular strain of indie rock that Bearhug play, and one that doesn’t necessarily need to sound especially new to be effective. Without venturing too far out from its influences Bill, Dance, Shiner is an album marked by intimacy and authenticity.

Belgian beauty Selah Sue’s self-titled debut album has garnered success on the European pop charts since its release more than a year ago, and is sure to do the same here following its recent Australian release. When you put this record on, you’re firstly enticed by the sensual and slow melodies that kick off the first track This World. Then comes Selah Sue’s husky and delicate, but still powerful, vocals that rise in the chorus with the aid of a big band, making for a sound reminiscent to that of retro songstresses Duffy and Amy Winehouse. Tunes Crazy Vibes and Raggamuffin have both garnered significant radio airplay in Europe and it’s easy to see why - they’re both great tracks which mix elements of pop, ska and big band sounds to great effect. Another highlight is Peace Of Mind, which sees the singer’s vocals stagnated and stuttered during the chorus giving the illusion of female rap. It’s also paired with that aforementioned husky vocal and together they make for an energetic song that will stick in your head for days. Please is also one of the more memorable tracks on the album, although that can probably be attributed to the inclusion of guest vocals by soul superstar Cee Lo Green. Overall, a very enjoyable slice of European retro styling.

LIGHTSHIPS Electric Cables

FAIR OHS Everything Is Dancing

Domino / EMI

Honey High Records

You have to love the insular nature of the Scottish music scene. When Teenage Fanclub and Pastels member Gerard Love was convinced to make an album solely of his songs, Lightships was born. Wanting to give Lightships a full band feel he went about recruiting some of his fellow Glasgow mates for the debut Electric Cables. Love reunites with original Teenage Fanclub member Brendan O’Hare, and borrows bass player Bob Kildea from Belle & Sebastian, but it is the inclusion of flautist Tom Crossley that shapes the sound of Electric Cables. The album is bright in its delivery with many of the tunes free flowing and soothing like Girasol, and Sweetness In Her Spark is as grand as anything that Love has put his name to in the past. There is something special about having the charismatic Brendan O’Hare back on drumming duties where his fills and rolls on Silver & Gold have the familiar feel of someone throwing their drumkit down the stairs. There is little doubt that a Gerard Love driven album was going to cause much excitement, but only the most optimistic would have thought he could make an album that would better at least half of Teenage Fanclub’s catalogue. Electric Cables has done so with ease.

_CHRIS HAVERCROFT 16

Hankering for a pop-oriented mix of the sounds of Africa and ‘60s England that presents itself as psychedelic indie music? The mighty Fair Ohs have you covered with their debut album, Everything Is Dancing. The fact that the album was released on their own label (Honey High Records) means that the record could quite have easily been non-coherent and confusing, but instead it presents as an incredibly cohesive set of tracks that are pure summer funk. The vocals are extremely masculine and almost monotone but they work with the eclectic mix of instrumentals, an apt example of this is the track Katasraj which is one of the standout tracks on the album. It begins with echoed percussion that reminiscent of Coldplay and then all of a sudden it smashes out into fast paced drum beats that are energetic, in part reminding you of a jumped up ‘60s song with wild drumming added into the mix. Weird, yes, but it’s catchy. The track that the guys have been promoting the most has been Everything Is Dancing, and it’s easy to see why – it’s definitely a stand out track; it almost reminds one of the theme track for English teen drama Skins. As a result you’ll literally just want to start dancing in a field in a most hipster fashion.

A PSYCHEDELIC REACTION Trip To Freo

Datura, Sonpsilo Circus, The Deep River Collective, and Hurricane Fighter Plane play the Fremantle Arts Centre on Saturday, April 14, in a throwback to the great psychedelic pop revival of the early ‘80s. X-Press catches up with Datura guitarist and bona fide local music legend Dom Mariani. Bookings can be made via fac.org.au. Like so many people whose legend actually has some kind of existence outside of their own heads, Dom Mariani - who has had an illustrious musical career spanning three decades, but will always be known for his work in The Stems - has no hint of ego about him. When asked about his upcoming one-off collaborative show, he is both refreshingly direct and quietly self-deprecating. “Well, it’s four bands getting together, basically,” he explains in a soft, well-worn voice. “We’ve played together in the past, but not all at once. It’s a special gig, I guess. It’s all about the music that we play and we’re into, so we just thought we’d come up with a nice event. The Fremantle Arts Centre is a great venue, the courtyard there, and we’re doing it with some special visual effects - some psychedelic effects. There’ll be a, I guess you’d call it a VJ situation where somebody will be filming the bands and projecting the images up on the screen along with the effects he’s come up with. And there’ll be other things in and around that courtyard. So this event will be a kind of celebration.”

A celebration, yes, but not a recreation. Although the show is being touted as a conceptual successor to a number of gigs held back in the day, which were themselves influenced by similar events in London and San Francisco back in the ‘60s, Mariani stresses that time and technology have given this iteration a different spin. “There were a couple of gigs that happened back at the Old Melbourne Hotel that had the title of The Psychedelic Reaction,” he reflects. “I can’t recall that they had any kind of visual effects or anything, but it was where like-minded bands used to go. It was more or less a celebration of, I guess, ‘60s rock and roll culture.” Of course, in Mariani’s mind, that ‘60s rock and roll culture has never really gone away. “It’s always been there,” he declares. “Like anything, there’s always bands doing certain types and styles of music, and someone might come through who might be an interesting band, and all of a sudden they become popular and may happen to be a psychedelic-influenced band. I guess once things become popular, then people start to take notice, and they see that there’s lots of other bands doing the same thing. There’s always bands doing that kind of thing, it just depends on what kind of attention they get at any given time.” Hopefully Datura’s debut album, the release of which is imminent, will attract some of that attention. “Yeah, we’re pretty close. We’ve got a few more tracks to do, some vocals and what have you, but we’ve done a fair bit of it already, so I think maybe midyear, second part of the year, it should be out.” _TRAVIS JOHNSON

This Must Be The Place

THIS MUST BE THE PLACE Gothic Odyssey Directed by Paolo Sorrentino Starring Sean Penn, Frances McDormand, Judd Hirsch, Kerry Condon, Harry Dean Stanton, David Byrne Italian auteur Paolo Sorrentino (the magisterial Il Divo) takes an incisive look at the American cultural landscape in his bizarre but endlessly fascinating entrance into English-language filmmaking. The picaresque tale follows ageing goth rocker Cheyenne’s (Sean Penn) journey across the US in search of the Nazi camp guard who abused his father. Stirred from his retirement in Ireland alongside his fire fighter wife Jane (Coen brothers regular Frances McDormand) upon hearing of his estranged father’s imminent passing, he arrives in his hometown of New York too late to say his goodbyes. As luck would have it, though, veteran Nazi hunter Mordecai Midler (Judd Hirsch) is on hand to inform him of his old man’s lifelong longing for vengeance, and so Cheyenne sets of on a solo cross-country quest in search of... Well, that is the question. Cheyenne is an enigmatic character who gives up his secrets and motivations slowly and unwillingly as the film follows its meandering course. With his look clearly patterned on Cure frontman Robert Smith - all bird’s nest black hair and smeared makeup - he’s certainly a striking figure, but he’s also an ineluctably sad one, with his soft, whistling voice and permanent hangdog expression. While his stated purpose for his journey is the pursuit of justice for his father, as time passes we are gradually led to the notion that he is

www.xpressmag.com.au

in fact running away from something: the ennui of his sedentary retirement, the weight of his musical reputation, his life, himself. It sounds heavy going, and Sorrentino’s propensity for static, albeit stunningly beautiful, shot compositions and glacial pacing sometimes doesn’t help matters, but the film is shot through with a wonderfully warm vein of absurdist humour, which is often evoked simply by placing Cheyenne in the varied milieu that is middle America; simply seeing him play ping pong in a roadside diner is a scene for the ages. It’s also a profoundly affecting film, as Sorrentino repeatedly shows us the touching scenes of human connection and communication that punctuate Cheyenne’s trip: a singalong to the titular song with the young son of a dead soldier; a quiet conversation with an elderly luggage magnate (the legendary Harry Dean Stanton). It’s that combination of the dour, the profound, and the absurd that has alienated some pundits, as the film wilfully resists easy classification; like life, every time you think you’ve got it figured it throws up an extra complication. But for all its internal contradictions and tonal variations, This Must Be The Place hangs together remarkably well. It’s an unusual film, to be sure, but by no means an unknowable one, working as a piece of outsider sociology, as a character study, and as a meditation on the inevitability of change and the cost of resisting it. Seann William Scott

SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT Pie In The Sky Over the course of the American Pie series, foul mouthed ambulatory libido Steven Stifler has moved up the ladder from supporting role to central character. Similarly, actor Seann William Scott has also moved up the ziggurat, to the point where he’s now credited as one of the producers of American Wedding, the latest film in the franchise. “I pitched this thing two, three years ago,” he explains. “I called the studio up. I’d worked on the idea, the storyline, stuff like that. I know Jason [Biggs, his co-star] as well, independent of me, was also thinking that this could be something great. So we were able to help develop it and be a part of the process.” Although he’s happy to be back, Scott admits that for a long time he thought he was done with the series. “I never thought I’d do another American Pie,” he says.“I had fun with the first three, but it wasn’t something I was really looking to do. And then a little over three years ago, after doing some movies, I was like ‘god, it’s so hard to find a really fun character to play in these R-rated comedies’. I just felt that nobody had really done a high school reunion comedy well, and I thought it would just be a perfect forum to bring everybody back from the first one. I thought there’d be a chance to do a great stand alone comedy with these characters that a lot of people seem to enjoy, and maybe even arguably do one that maybe could be better than the first one. It just seemed like everything fell into place.

“In the second and third American Pie movies the stories weren’t as solid,” he continues. “And it was just a chance to get everybody back and have fun. I think what’s cool about this is, being at that age - late 20s, early 30s - it’s kind of like that quarter-life crisis where, whether it’s an event like a wedding or a funeral, or a high school reunion, people get together and they kind of reflect, ‘Wow! Is this really where I thought I was going to be in life?’. So there’s a little bit of substance to the movie, which I think always helps comedy, especially when you’re gonna have Jason Biggs showing his penis, you know? If you’re gonna have some crazy stuff, it’s nice to actually care about these characters and have somewhat of a solid story to follow.” And as for Stifler’s continued popularity? “I think a lot of people knew a guy like that in school,” he muses. “The guy who, maybe he was kind of a douche, but he threw parties. But now when we catch up with him, you realise he’s that guy who... he’s around 30, and he’s probably been waiting for the high school reunion since the day he graduated. He just wants to party. Everyone around him has changed, but he doesn’t understand society. He’s got a job because it seems like it’s something he should be doing. He’s got good intentions, he’s just got a bad approach. He’s not a bad guy; he’s just inappropriate. He says the things you want to say, but you wouldn’t really have the balls to say. He’s our outlet.” _TRAVIS JOHNSON

TRIPOD

The Third Leg Musical comedy trio Tripod embark on the regional Comedy Suitcase Tour, alongside local funnymen Werzel Montague and John Robertson, as well as US import Mike G, before bringing their latest show, Men Of Substance, to The Astor Theatre from May 3-5 for the Perth International Comedy Festival. Scott Edgar - he’s the one with the glasses, by the way - seems pleasantly surprised by the success of last year’s Tripod show, the Dungeons & Dragons themed Tripod Vs The Dragon. It’s understandable; conventional wisdom suggests that basing a populist comedy musical around that nerdiest of pastimes might not be strategically sound. Yet audiences responded to the show with overwhelming positivity, suggesting that there might be a lot more former dungeon-crawlers out there than conventional wisdom might suggest. “They’re everywhere!” Edgar, or “Scod” as he’s more informally known - agrees enthusiastically. “They come out of the woodwork. It’s true. But I don’t know anyone who ever regrets it. Everyone looks back on it quite fondly, you know? We really enjoyed doing that show for that reason. People really took to the boldness that it took to do a musical about that; they really responded to it.” But anyone expecting the group to recycle old material, even successful old material, is going to be disappointed. Scod stresses that their latest performance, Men Of Substance, is a brand new work. Well, more or less. “This is an all new show, for sure,” he explains. “But we are in the happy position of being musicians as well, so what you get is people saying that they want to hear this song or that song, and people can give you a bit of a hard time if you don’t play your hits. We have to kind of walk that balance between new material and giving people the songs that they want to hear. But on this show it’s all new, and I think the fact that we live in Melbourne and we do have the annual comedy festival here is a good thing, and it does prod you to come up with new material every year. Because your artist is typically a lazy type of person, and I am no exception. “The new show was premiered in the Art Centre in Melbourne about six weeks ago,” he continues. “And we’re really actually enjoying playing it. It’s a ‘bunch of songs’ show, which we are tentatively calling our cabaret format. If you saw

us last year, we were bringing a musical over, and this is much more informal than that. This is just us standing in a row playing tunes for the gig. But it’s a fun show, actually. The band’s been together for 16 years now - legally old enough to have sex with, collectively - and we’re all turning 40 this year as well. We’re all turning into actual, grown-up, human men with dignity and import, apparently - no, not really. So that’s the show, and we’re loving it - we’re all having a good time.”

for 16 years now - legally old enough to have sex with, collectively - and we’re all turning 40 this year as well. We’re all turning into actual, grown-up, human men with dignity and import, apparently - no, not really.” Indeed, Scod has come a long way since he first hooked up with his bandmates, Simon “Yon” Hall and Steven “Gatesy” Gates, at the University Of Melbourne back in the mid-’90s. But he insists that a career in comedy was something he had always been drawn to, mainly owing to the versatility and ubiquity of the form. “Well, if you want to get into a semantic discussion, I’d suggest that comedy isn’t an artform at all.” he says thoughtfully. “It’s a formal property of art. The beauty of comedy is that you can use it as part of any kind of art - this is why we use it as part of our music. There’s a lot of great thrillers that might have comedy in them as an ingredient, but it’s not actually the point of the whole exercise. We’re watching 30 Rock at the moment, which is just magical, and not only is it hilariously funny, but it’s a drama. It’s a story about people and the way they can flow into that kind of... serious is the wrong word,

Tripod but that honest earnest, honest kind of side of things as well is great. So I guess that’s what excites me the most about comedy; it’s part of a bigger picture as far as the arts are concerned, and that’s what I really respond to - the enjoyment and challenge of trying to mix it with other alchemical elements.” Edgar says he is also excited about the recent opportunity to work with one of his comedy heroes, Colin Lane of Lano and Woodley fame. “When I got to uni, you’ve got to say that The Doug Anthony All Stars and Lano and Woodley were pretty crucial to my introduction to that world.” he recalls. “Particularly Lano and Woodley; those stand-offs they used to have really inform the

way that conflict is a part of what we do. Yeah, I think Tripod largely ripped off Lano and Woodley early on, which is fine, because fast forward 20 years and here we are doing a show that Colin Lane actually helped us with! He was kind of doing a little directing for us, and it’s a pretty special kind of feeling to think that we’re part of that community now, and the people that we idolised as kids are now our colleagues and our friends. I had a bit of a wake-up call that day.” _TRAVIS JOHNSON

Quarter Acre: Moores Building, Fremantle The quarter acre block has long been an idealised vision of the basic Australian living space and way of life. It has played a big part in the formation of the nation’s communal psyche. Most Australians begin their life journey confined to the borders of the enclosed universe of the suburban block. Fremantle-based artist Michael O’Connell has captured this paradigm in a new exhibition that looks at a world full of discovery, new adventures and alter egos. Runs Apr 20-May 6.

Tom Mundell used to run an internet radio station from his bedroom in his early teens. It was here that he received drum’n’bass CDs in the post and one which caught his attention and essentially led him to where he is today was Bad Company’s remix of Q Project’s track Champion Sound. ANNABEL MACLEAN chats with Mundell, aka Metrik, about his upcoming Between Worlds Tour, his love for sci-fi and working with ShockOne. “I played an amazing show in Brussels last weekend alongside the legendary Dillinja and your very own ShockOne - the place was going off until breakfast time,” Tom Mundell begins, in between sneaking coffee sips in his kitchen of his London flat on a sunny morning. It’s becoming the norm for the UK up and coming producer who’s fast becoming one of the most talked about names in drum’n’bass. When Mundell released the soulful tune Your World back in 2007, it caught the attention of the big shots - London Elektricity, DJ Fresh and Pendulum amongst others. Then Brendan Collins, aka DJ and producer Futurebound and owner of Viper Recordings, contacted Mundell and signed him to his Liverpool drum’n’bass imprint. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind of journey for the young producer. “Working with Viper has been a great experience from day one really,” he says. “Brendan [Collins] has a lot of positive personal input in the music and works tirelessly as a label manager and mentor. The output is very eclectic too so I need not worry about what style I put out as I can afford to be diverse. It’s always been my intention from day one to represent a wide variety of sounds and the label have been very supportive of this. It’s been a blast.”

Mundell released Between Worlds, his follow EP to The Departure EP, last year. Continuing his love for space and sci-fi themes, Between Worlds even contains a remix of The Departure EP’s T-1000 entitled T-2000 and American singer Kathy Brown makes an appearance on I See You. “I’ve always been a big fan of the sci-fi genre in general, particularly classic films like Bladerunner, Escape From New York, Alien and TV shows such as Fringe, Lost, etc,” he explains. “I’m a sucker for next level scientific concepts and ‘out-there’ theories. [It] seemed to make total sense to give the EPs a sci-fi theme as it felt a very natural part of my creative vision. The track Between Worlds is actually based on the idea of travelling between parallel universes - no influence from Fringe there at all! (laughs).” Between Worlds is also Mundell’s first track in which he attempted dubstep and since the tune’s release, he’s produced a number of dubstep tracks.“I massively enjoyed writing Between Worlds,” he says. “I’d been writing so much at 174bpm that it was really refreshing to take it down in tempo and apply my knowledge and ethic of drum’n’bass to dubstep. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the reaction I’ve had so I definitely feel confident making it. I think it’s important to create music that you love making regardless of genre - if other people love it too great!” Having worked with Perth’s very own ShockOne on True Believer, Mundell says he’s currently collaborating with ShockOne again and working with female vocalist Sophia Dorval. “I have recently finished a remix for John B which will be released on the special edition of his album in the next month,” he says. “I have also remixed a track by BCee for Spearhead Records, a label I massively admire and this is due to drop in September. Also, look out for my remix of Kali’s Queen Of Hearts.” Having recently appeared on the Drum & Bass Summer Slammers 2011 record from Viper, Mundell is working on his next body tracks to be released as a new EP and forthcoming singles and says an album could then be in the works for a potential release early next year. “I’m actually sitting on a whole heap of stuff I’m very excited to test out for the first time in Australia,” he says. Having last played down under at a soldout gig at Shape alongside ShockOne and Phetsta in celebration of the release of his The Departure EP early last year, Mundell is pumped to be heading back down under for Viper. “I know that from playing in Perth last year I can expect amazing vibes, open mindedness and a friendly atmosphere,” he says. “I felt very welcome in Perth and the show didn’t disappoint – drum’n’bass is very strong there. I look

Metrik forward to an even better time at Villa this time round!” And this time round, Mundell says fans can expect a decent load of drum’n’bass. “I try to represent only the best in current electronic club music, predominantly drum’n’bass but with also some other genres in there too,” he says. “I see my sets as a representation of me musically so you can expect to hear a lot of my own released and unreleased material as well as tracks that I love with the odd classic thrown in. I showcase many different styles but the common theme across them all is high energy, big sounds and good vibes.” After hitting our shores, Mundell is off to Springtime Festival in Belgium before heading to France, Germany, Portugal and Canada for various festivals and club tours. But, for now, it’s all about his upcoming Between Worlds Tour down under. “This time in Australia I will explore more of the cities, beaches and culture - I absolutely love the place!”

JESS HARLEN TRANSITIONS

As she releases her second album Park Yard Slang, Melbourne singer Jess Harlen finds herself at a transitional point in her life. She speaks with JOSHUA HAYES about the album and her future. Working with acclaimed hip hop producer Plutonic Lab, Harlen began writing and recording the album as soon as the pair finished her debut, Neon Heartache, in 2010 – although timing proved to be a challenge. Harlen went on an extensive overseas tour as part of Blue King Brown’s live line up, while Plutonic was also busy on the road with Muph and the Hilltop Hoods. Although they eventually managed to record the album, Harlen hit another roadblock when she didn’t have money for mastering. On the suggestion of a friend, she put up a request on Pozible.com, asking her supporters for $1000 in contributions to finish the project. She was overwhelmed by the $4000 raised in one week. “It showed me the true, genuine support that we have from our followers and fans and friends and family. It was just such an outstanding effort from everyone,” she says. Harlen says that although there are elements of her debut in Park Yard Slang, she consciously made her latest effort more diverse, with hip hop and dancehall having a stronger influence. “We wanted to make it sound a little bit more new and fresh and ‘now’, because I think that the last album – we didn’t want this to happen, but – I think it kind of got grouped into ‘soul’ as if it was only soul music,” she says. “It pays its respect to soul music but it has all these other genres that influence the writing process so we thought we would exaggerate those.” She’s currently in talks with booking agents to arrange her first Perth tour to promote the album. However, her first performance here may also be her last for a long time, as she recently auditioned for – and was offered a place at – the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Jess Harlen “Once this album’s released and toured in Australia I probably won’t be playing here for quite a while,” she says. “I’m trying to get this music out there. I haven’t had the most enormous support from Triple J which stunts your potential with other radio stations,” she says. “I think these records have something very unique and I don’t want to just watch them collect dust under my bed, so I’ll be trekking out over the world trying to release them in other places.” Her overseas studies could take three to four years. however, they won’t be Harlen’s first tertiary experience. She was studying law in Brisbane but deferred to pursue music full time after moving to Melbourne six years ago – and she can see herself returning one day. “Later on in life I would like to get back into [law]. [But] I think I’ve still got quite a few years to play around with music,” she says. “I definitely want to tour the world a few more times with it and release a few more albums - become one of those age-old, well-seasoned musicians.”

DOCTOR WEREWOLF CALL OF THE WILD The EP, Wolfzilla, will be released on Kid Kenobi’s Klub Kids label. Two tracks from the EP, Lasercat Rocket Attack and Take Me Away, appeared on their Sound Of Dubstep mix (the mix also includes their popular Trololo Man remix). They’ve also started working on their next EP, which they hope to release by the end of the year. Between the tours and studio work, they also hold down full time jobs. “My flatmates are constantly saying ‘do you even live here? Because we never ever see you’,” he says.“It’s not always easy but it’s very rewarding.” The pair – Bell and Adam Zae, best mates since the start of high school – were inspired to get into DJing and, ultimately, production through their own clubbing experiences. They’ve since earned acclaim The lads have been busy, having recently toured their with the energetic blend of dubstep, drum’n’bass Sound Of Dubstep mix (they mixed one disc one the and rave in both their DJ sets and in the studio – compilation, while the other was handled by BAR 9), although Bell prefers not to pigeonhole himself. “I as well as finishing their next project before coming don’t personally like to genre-fy my music. We kind of out our way. “We’re in the studio wrapping a couple of ignore genre,” he adds. “We do play loud, obnoxious things up for our EP. That’s what the Easter break [was] music; that’s about as close as I get to defining what we sound like.” for us; working on our studio tans,” Bell says.

Sydney duo Doctor Werewolf are on the verge of becoming one of Australia’s biggest bass music acts, with a mix on the Ministry Of Sound’s recent Sound Of Dubstep Vol.3 compilation and a string of party starting productions of their own. JOSHUA HAYES speaks with Andrew Bell about their upcoming Perth show, their next EP, and dressing up as Jesus.

www.xpressmag.com.au

For anyone who has not seen them on a previous Good Vibrations or Future Music appearance, Bell says their Ministry mix gives a general idea of where they take their sets. “We’re very impatient… we like to change genres a lot,” Bell says of their live shows. “We do play dubstep but we also play a lot of drumstep and drum’n’bass and a lot of moombahton stuff, as it’s getting increasingly popular… It’s a kitchen sink sort of set.” As their Perth show falls on Friday the 13th, the night will be a horror-themed fancy dress party, with punters encouraged to rock vampire fangs and fake blood. As it turns out, Bell is quite happy about the theme.“We do enjoy a dress up,” he says. “New Year’s Eve - we played a gig that was a dress up. I went as Jesus and Adam went as a dinosaur which was a bit of a shambles considering the theme was ‘superheroes’. But I argued that Jesus was the greatest of all superheroes, and I think Adam decided he was Godzilla, which was a superhero to the Japanese people. The one thing we regret about the entire gig is that we didn’t get a photo of Adam, as a dinosaur, riding me, as Jesus.”

SLACKJAW LABOUR OF LOVE

Fresh off the release of his debut, last year’s Fremantle’s Finest, upcoming local rapper Chance Fitzgerald, aka Slackjaw, recently put together a free remix EP which he’s launching at The Bird this weekend. He catches up with JOSHUA HAYES. The Fremantle’s Finest Remix EP was made available to download via Fitzgerald’s Bandcamp page last month. The EP features local producers, including Diger Rokwell, Rob Shaker and Paulie P, reworking three tracks from Fremantle’s Finest - In Your Speakers, Rains Dope and Hearing Voices. “I decided to pick three songs and then get people to remix a couple of different version of that,” he says.“Some of the results were completely unexpected and they diversified the lyrics… One or two of the remixes just cast the song in a completely different [light].” He’s launching the EP at The Bird this weekend, with support from Knoe FM and LSD & The Missus. It will be Fitzgerald’s second launch for the EP, after a show at the Prince Of Wales in Bunbury last month. “It was a bit of a flop,” he laughs, speaking with disarming honesty about the gig, which had been organised at short notice. “Future Music Festival was on [that weekend] and so was Soundwave. I was speaking to the bar staff down there and they said that everyone in Bunbury was

staying home and saving their money because a lot of people go to both; they live for the trip up to Perth and festivals like that… It was a bit of a learning experience.” But Fitzgerald will be expecting a better turnout at The Bird, having established a following in Perth and Fremantle – in particular through support slots for the likes of Big Boi, Del The Funky Homosapien and Chali 2NA. In the meantime he’s currently working on a new mixtape – the fourth in his Eat A Rat series – which he hopes to have ready for release by the start of next summer, and his second solo album. However, Fitzgerald says he may not be able to get this follow up to Fremantle’s Finest out for some time. “For the album, really, it’s a financial [issue],” he says. “I’ll probably find all my beats and write all my songs by the end of the year but then it will take me a little of time to save the money to go into the studio. Hopefully it’s not a year after that, but I can’t really see being ready to release until the end of 2013. “You’re paying for beats, you’re paying for studio time, you’re paying for people to mix it down, you’re paying for mastering, and then you’ve got to look how much money you want to spend on releasing and promoting it and I want to spend more than I did on the first album. “We’re not balling, we’re not pimping; we still try to go to work as much as possible on our real jobs, because we do it for the love, really,” Fitzgerald summarises. “If we blow up, whatever, one day and get to be on the radio and go on tour, that’d be great, but that’s not really in our minds when we’re doing it… I think it would change what I do if I was thinking like that.”

XAVIER RUDD Darren Gibson

Fly By Night Wednesday, March 30, 2012

Xavier Rudd (Photo: Callum Ponton)

It’s been a while since Perth’s been privy to the blues and roots stylings of Xavier Rudd, but he was back in town for an intimate show at Fremantle’s Fly By Night Club - and with a new album to showcase, as well. Joined by an eclectic crowd that showed girls in bodycon dresses and high heels sharing a floor space with guys with waist-length dreadlocks, it showed the pulling power of Mr Rudd and how much influence his politically-charged tunes have on a wide range of people. Opening for Xavier Rudd was Melbourne troubadour Darren Gibson. Although he had an unassuming stage presence - looking more like a

friendly IT guy than a typical folk singer (indeed, his ‘day job’ is a school teacher) - he had a powerful voice and was warm and friendly to the crowd. Starting off with a Something For Kate cover suited his very Paul Dempsey-sounding voice, with a strong Aussie accent. The crowd got restless during the 20 minute delay it took for Xavier to take to the stage, but all was forgiven as soon as he sat down behind his impressive drum kit and started tuning just one of his many guitars that would appear throughout the night. After an impressive starting track, playing didgeridoo, drums and guitar, Rudd swapped to a twelve string guitar and launched straight into popular tune Food In The Belly, to a huge reception from the crowd. While Rudd goes effortlessly from bluesy rock to the reggae-inspired Come Let Go, the tracks from his

new album seemed to be a little bit funk inspired. With lots of crazy instrumentals and chanting, haunting vocals, the tracks from his new album are a little bit of a departure from his usual laid-back sound. However, tracks like his new hit Follow The Sun ensure there’s something on his album for even his most die-hard old fans. If you’ve heard of Xavier Rudd, you’ll probably know of his efforts to educate on the plight on Australian Aborigines. His song G.B.A featured an Indigenous dancer, which was a surprise and warmly received by the crowd. Finishing off the night with a cover of fellow political musician Bob Marley’s Buffalo Soldier and his hugely popular tune Let Me Be, Rudd cemented his place as one of the country’s best live performers. You might have missed out on his sold-out shows this time around, but if you do get the chance to catch the man in action, grab your tickets immediately. You won’t be disappointed and you may even be a little bit amazed. _TARA LLOYD

CAL PECK & THE TRAMPS BALL PARK MUSIC Blazin’ Entrails / The Sure-Fire Midnights

Cub Scouts / Stillwater Giants

Hyde Park Hotel Saturday, April 7, 2012

Newport Hotel Sunday, April 8, 2012

Ah, a rock and roll gig at The Hydey - it’s the mid ‘90s all over again. Not that that’s a bad thing; we should be gratified that the venue’s new owners are putting on shows like this and - more importantly - we should be voting with our wallets. The crowd on Saturday night wasn’t exactly wall to wall, but the punters who did attend certainly got their money’s worth. The always entertaining The Sure-Fire Midnights kicked off the evening’s festivities with a hellacious, hard-driving racket. A few of the leftover football fans that comprised a good percentage of the crowd made some disparaging noise during the opening song, but soon shut their traps; when singer Claire Sargeant puts her pipes into high gear and guitarist Laura McCormack leaps onto a speaker to fang out some licks, they command respect. Rockabilly rascals Blazin’ Entrails brought the stomp, with their gleefully deranged lyrics and infectious, thigh-slapping rhythms proving irresistible. As an added bonus, we got to hear a couple of songs from their upcoming release, Grease For The Gravy and Chico.

30

And finally it was time for the star attraction, Cal Peck And The Tramps. It’s a mistake to simple pigeonhole Mister Callum Peck’s work as rockabilly; what he and the Tramps do is dig deeper and further back for their influences, eschewing the polyglot culture that is rockabilly to draw and a purer, mid-’50s strain. Hell, the guy even looks like a beefed-up alternative universe version of Buddy Holly, with his glasses, all-business haircut and upright posture. But the power and energy of his performance belies Peck’s somewhat buttoneddown appearance. Devilishly deep vocals and intricate yet catchy guitar work are backed up by the solid, driving rhythm section that is Byron Robertson and Bangers McKay. What they dish up isn’t some Happy Days-style nostalgia-fest, but rock‘n’roll as it was, and sometimes still is: dirty, sexy, enervating, respectful of the genre but unafraid to rip it up. All up, it was a killer set and a fantastic end to the night. There’s an LP from The Tramps in the offing, although the vagaries of independent production mean it’s hard to say when. But why wait? Peck and pals are a gloriously fun live act, and they’re gigging now; make the effort and catch them live soon. _TRAVIS JOHNSON

Ball Park Music kicked off their highly anticipated second Perth show for their 180° Tour was at the Newport in Freo on Sunday evening. Local lads Stillwater Giants kicked off the night with their hook-laden surf rock, heating up the room for the acts to come, and pulling punters away from the TVs near the bar. Though they need to work on fine-tuning their up-tempo songs, there’s definitely a lot of potential there; particularly with final song Give Into Me – an infectious, tight tune. The troupe that is Cub Scouts took to the stage next and dominated with their sweet indie tunes, particularly with Evie (which was reported by frontman Tim Nelson to be a “song about my dog”) and Do You Hear. The highlight of the set was undoubtedly the Brisbane band’s cover of Destiny’s Child’s Jumpin Jumpin – with an introduction of:“this song is very important to the band.” Classic. Next up, Ball Park Music strutted on stage in swanky suits (with bassist Jen Boyce in a cut dress) and wowed the crowd from the get-go, starting off with a few riffs of Dick Dale’s Misirlou, then launching into Literally Baby as soon as frontman Sam Cromack

wandered onto the stage, all a-swagger with beer in hand. The band slammed through their recent singles; iFLY, Rich People Are Stupid, and songs from their album Happiness And Surrounding Suburbs – notably, a stunning version of Alligator. At one point in the set the band engaged in a bit of banter about Easter, with Cromack thanking the crowd for “taking some time off from Jesus’ resurrection” to come see the band. He followed that up quickly with: “And here’s a song about having a wank,” jumping into Sad Rude Future Dude, which was undoubtedly the crowd favourite of the night. Cromack’s crazy charisma really does make the band, with the lovely Boyce cheekily complementing him on stage, and each of the other band member’s steadily holding their own. There’s really not a bad word to say about Ball Park Music. There are, however, an overly ridiculous amount of cliché puns to work with, which this reviewer wouldn’t dream of using – that’d be a catch 22. Final verdict? Ball Park Music hit a home run this time around. _CHLOE PAPAS

SILVER LIZARD

SSA / Kettle Fingers / Nighthawker Prince Of Wales Saturday, April 7, 2012 From the moment Nighthawker hit the stage this night had all the hallmarks of an awesome, awesome punk show. A healthy early crowd was in position for the opening band, which features Silver Lizard skinsman Chris on drums and is fronted by Anthony Steele, another local punk aficionado and one-time Lizard member. Comparisons between the two acts are therefore inevitable, and Nighthawker mine a similar modern punk vein. They lack the huge anthemic character of Silver Lizard, focusing instead on bitchin’ riffage, but there is a comparable sense of the righteous anger, honesty and solidarity that help to make Bunbury punk so irrepressible. Newcomers Kettle Fingers are best described as a riot-grrrl/old-school punk outfit. They rely on a relentless primal ‘1-2-1-2-1-2’ drumbeat, perhaps not heard on the WA punk scene since The Rats over 10 years ago. Indeed, this band were strongly reminiscent of the bands that once graced the sticky floors of The Hydey – albeit with a more innocent air. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as The Hydey could be pretty freakin’ gnarly, but it also says something important about the Bunno scene, which

FAIREST OF THEM ALL

is rapidly shaping up as one of the funnest and most important punk communities in the state. Anyway, this predominantly female band were pretty damn great, a good contrast to the other acts, and they covered Bikini Kill’s Rebel Girl which certainly rocked X-Press’ world. Veteran Perth punks SSA were up next and, man, have they come back from the wilderness with a vengeance! Drummer Oli Francis is such an important element, pummelling the shit out of the tubs and roaring out backing vocals with equal parts energy and personality. Singer Eddie Mabo, who long suffered from the side-effects of smoking, also now powers out his vocals better than ever. But this night belonged to Silver Lizard. Returning from a lengthy hiatus, the fourpiece Bunbury band absolutely ripped the roof off their local. Full of righteous fury, they came out blazing with their old classic Collars, hammered through the genius of Jan 26 and came home with the truly anthemic Why Would You? which is possibly their best song. There was plenty of new material on show also, which indicates that the band’s lengthy time away has not hurt their creativity or their trajectory. If anything, it’s just made punters hungrier, and if the crowd surfing and general shenanigans this evening were anything to go by, people are freakin’ ravenous. Far and away the best punk show of the year so far! _BEN WATSON

USURPER OF MODERN MEDICINE Yin Meets Yang According to vocalist/bassist Steven Hughes, Usurper Of Modern Medicine’s latest EP Turbo Handshake doesn’t just complement their critically lauded debut Acid Chess, it completes it. JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD caught up with Hughes ahead of the launch for the new EP this Saturday, April 14, at The Bakery. The decision by local post rock/electronic wunderkinds Usurper Of Modern Medicine to brand their new EP Turbo Handshake as “the counterpart” to their 2011-released almost-masterpiece Acid Chess doesn’t feel at all like a gimmick, but more like a labor of love that gives each member of the trio the appropriate amount of time to shine. “This record was more or less already written when people were first hearing Acid Chess, it was always the plan to have these two EPs released back to back - we just got sidetracked with a whole lot of touring and other unforeseen developments that delayed the completion of this record much longer than intended. We originally wanted this record out in the second half of 2011, but due to the reaction Acid Chess got and tours/shows that came our way because of it the recording took much longer to complete. We decided to wait until the end of summer to put it out rather then rush it out at the end of the year,” vocalist/bassist Steven Hughes explains. Packed with the same intense vocal resampling and dynamic looping that made Acid Chess so weirdly gripping, whether Turbo Handshake is a sequel, a companion piece, or a reimagining hardly matters – its pleasures and frustrations are entirely approachable on their own terms.

SHAKE ON IT

According to bassist/vocalist Steven Hughes, punters who trek down to The Bakery to catch Usurper Of Modern Medicine launch their new EP Turbo Handshake on Saturday, April 14, will “see [us] how we want to play, but rarely get the chance to - with our full backline of gadgets, amplifiers and drums. It will be loud.” If that weren’t enticing enough, the trio is promising an upgraded light show and possibly some never-before-heard tunes. Then, of course, there are amazing supports in the form of stellar locals French Rocket and Naik and special Melbourne guest Absolute Boys. Click on over to nowbaking. com.au to pick up your presale tickets for $12 plus booking fee.

SHOCK TREATMENT

Described by the band as “an oceanic panorama of odd time signatures, fuzz guitar explosions and electrifying vocal harmonies,” Shock Octopus is set to release their debut EP this Saturday, April 14, at Ya Ya’s. Support comes from Michael Strong’s new super band The Disappointed, alternative-rockers Head Full Of Steam and The Foxman from RTRFM Soulsides.

CAPE TOWN CRUSADERS

Whether using a three guitar attack or adding flourishes of trumpet, Cape Town Lullaby’s songs are always a balance between pop hooks and thoughtful lyrics, resulting in the rarest of gems – songs that last the test of time but also have immediate appeal. The talented outfit will be launching their self-titled EP over two huge nights and two different locations – on Friday, April 13, at the Norfolk Basement (support comes from Louis And The Honkytonk, Our Man In Berlin and The Espeys); and on Saturday, April 14, at the Prince Of Wales in Bunbury (with The Morning Night, Louis And The Honkytonk and The Espeys).

Fools Of April

FOOLS OF APRIL Usurper Of Modern Medicine “We hope they are seen as two parts of one whole. The songs on Turbo Handshake were already written when Acid Chess was released. With the exception of the opening song, Quadruple Dragon, which was pieced together from jam sessions when we were recording the other songs. Turbo Handshake is the heavier, sometimes darker companion to Acid Chess,” Hughes says. “For this session we had a lot more to work with in terms of studio time and equipment, which lead us to experiment much more with vocal processing and looping instruments into different amplifiers. Turbo Handshake is very much the louder record of the two, delving into our more guitar-based rock side, Acid Chess is the more synth/sample based, lighter counterpart. Of course, there [are] elements of both styles present on these records, insert clichéd yin-yang statement here.” As such, Hughes attests there a different listening experience to be obtained by listening to both EPs synonymously. “I recommend listening track for track, one song from Turbo Handshake first, and then a song from Acid Chess second, back and forward between the two. Integrate them, completely, intimately,” he concludes. “The band is moving in a much different direction now, so we figured we would release these remaining songs in the same fashion we crafted Acid Chess so we can close the chapter on this phase of the band and continue writing. This record took so long for us to get around to releasing we’re already well underway on crafting a debut album, which is going in some very interesting places at the moment.”

LIKE IT LOUD?

The loudest of the loud will join forces at Devilles Pad this Friday, April 13, for a shake and stomp party like no other. The Volcanics, Little While Lies, Crooks and The High Learys will be providing a slew of garagerock gems, while GoGo dancers and old-school DJs are sure to get you quaking in your boots. Entry is free before 8pm or $10 after.

SPECTACLE SPECTACULAR

On Thursday, April 12, Perth’s premier disheveled country blues/folk/ skiffle act Davey Craddock & The Spectacles (featuring Todd Pickett of the Kill Devil Hills and Sean Pollard of Split Seconds) will be joined by a stellar lineup of their pals at Mojo’s Bar, including king of hearts Benedict Moleta, queens of pop Simone & Girlfunkle and jesters of jive DJs Joshimoto and Beryl (from Triple J wunderband San Cisco). Tickets are insultingly cheap at $8 given the sweet sounds on offer, AND the first ten people through the door will also receive their very own jar of limited-edition Spectacle Brand tomato chutney which is perfectly consumed with vintage cheddar and the soon to be released new Davey Craddock & The Spectacles EP.

BACK TO BLACK

On Friday, April 13, four unsigned local bands are going to light up the Black Friday Shocker at The Railway Hotel, so someone had better be on standby to pull the plug at midnight! This high voltage line up of Something Humble, Blind Highway, Silver Grenade and Violet Scene will enlighten all present in watt promises to be an amped up night of epic rock entertainment. Tickets are $10 on the door from 8pm.

FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

This Friday, April 13, supremely talented local outfits Russian Winters, Will Stoker And The Embers and James Teague will be joining forces at Ya Ya’s for possibly the best edition of the Fat Shan Records’ event Fat Friday yet. Tickets are $10 on the door from 8pm.

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, how would you describe your band’s sound? Riff driven alternative rock with some unexpected twists and turns Where did your band name come from? The band was toiling with using the word ‘April’, then came up with ‘Fools of April’ and were actually unaware of the April Fools reference at the time! Most people don’t believe that, but it’s true. What do you love about making music? Being 100 per cent lost in the moment. For some of us it’s when we are alone with our instrument and others amongst the mayhem of a live performance, but finding that peace is the best thing. What do you hate about the music industry? The lack of venues available to local bands over the weekend in Perth is frustrating. The opening up of more smaller live music venues is great, but as a loud rock band we’d love more Rocket Room style venues. Out of all the local folks you’ve played shows with, who’s been one of your favourites? The Brown Study Band, these guys blow our minds every time we see them play! Tell us a little bit about your soon-to-be-released EP… The 4 track EP is titled Because You Are Here Everything Is Better Than I Imagined and there seems to be themes of possession and power twined throughout the songs. I think I end up writing about these things because I see them reflected in so many parts of life. Power struggles between lovers or between corporations and governments and people and our modern world’s obsession with material possessions. I think my lyrics are often an outlet for a heap of jumbled thoughts in my mind so it’s hard to pinpoint a meaning. What can a punter expect from your upcoming EP launch? You can expect three really killer support bands Tired Lion, Serial Killer Smile and Further Earth and then we are going to be giving it every thing we got, blood, sweat and tears (well probably no tears, but you never know things may get intense). Fools Of April launch their new EP Because You Are Here Everything Is Better Than I Imagined this Friday, April 13, at Amplifier.
