Shock as Easter death toll surges

'Human error' blamed for road accidents

The death of three people in a horror accident that

happened on Saturday, on the N2 near Mandeni, added to the rise in road fatalities during the ended Easter weekend. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed on Monday that the death toll this Easter long weekend had surged when compared to a year earlier.

The accident in Mandeni resulted in one person sustaining serious injuries, with IPSS Medical Rescue's advanced life support paramedics being activated to stabilize the patient before transportation to hospital for further care.

RTMC said, while the Department of Transport is still consolidating and verifying the final death toll for the

Easter weekend, six of the nine South African provinces had reported an increase from last year's figures. The most horrific accident was reported in KZN after 35 vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the N3 near Hilton, resulting in five people losing their lives.

RTMC added that, as of Monday this week, more than 75 000 vehicles had been stopped in operations across the country, with more than 700 drivers being charged for various traffic offences.

Transport Minister Cindy Chikunga, who was deployed in KZN during the Easter weekend, attributed many of the accidents to human factor. Chikunga, who participated in operations involving a multi-disciplinary team of law enforcement agencies, said it was clear that motorists were still averse to observing the rules of the road.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and

KDM Deputy Mayor laid to rest

Liaison Sipho Hlomuka expressed disappointment at the road accidents in the province over the Easter weekend.

“As provincial authorities, we are hugely disappointed with the fatal crashes recorded during this Easter

weekend. We appeal to those who will be continuing with their journey and those who are still going to embark to be on high alert

and ensure maximum adherence to traffic regulations,” stated MEC Hlomuka.

Widespread shock over Al-

Aqsa mosque attacks

There has been widespread shock and incredulity after violent scenes broke out at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, one of Muslim's holiest sites, following two raids by Israeli police, last week.

Hundreds of worshippers were forcefully removed and arrested from the mosque in the first day, resulting in several reported injuries.

In spite of mounting condemnation of the attacks in Palestine and the Arab world in general, the police followed up with another raid the following day, citing what it called “agitators” armed with sticks and stones who had allegedly barricaded themselves inside the

mosque.

The Palestinian Red Crescent in Jerusalem said at least 12 people were injured during clashes in and around the mosque, and at least three of the injured were transferred to hospital, some with injuries from rubber bullets.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked outrage around the world, with United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressing “shock” and “distress” over images of police beating up worshippers with batons and firing stun grenades.

The South African government has also added its voice, describing the raids as “unjust”.

“The Government of the Republic of South Africa has noted with concern, the Israeli occupation forces assault on the Palestinian worshippers overnight at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

“South Africa condemns these violent acts by the Israeli government against the worshippers and calls for calm and the withdrawal of the forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The use of stun grenades and tear gas on worshippers is unjust. These actions threaten the internationally agreed status quo in relation to Jerusalem and its sacred sites.

“The Palestinian Muslim worshippers have a right to practice their religion in peace, without fear or intimidation of the Israeli police. Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs to all Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims, and they do not require permission or approval from the Israeli government to enter or pray in the Mosque,” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said in a statement.

Salary increases for municipal workers

Municipal works will be smiling all the way to the bank towards the end of July, as they will be getting increased salaries, as per the agreement signed by unions at the SA Local Government Bargaining Chamber (SALGBC).

Municipal union SAMWU said in terms of the current agreement, workers from all the 257 municipalities will be receiving a 5.4% increase in July 2023. SAMWU General Secretary Dumisani Magagula said this part of the 3-year collective wage agreement, signed with employers' organization SALGA.

The benefits do not end with salary increases, as the sectoral minimum wage is also set to jump to R9 531.21. Homeowners allowance shall increase to R1 066.41 while the

cap for employer contribution towards medical aid shall be increased to R5 277.38. These increases are the last leg of the salary and collective agreement reached by parties in 2021, SAMWU said.

“We have also noticed in the past, the tendency by municipalities to deny workers their salary increases as agreed in the SALGBC. We will therefore be monitoring the implementation of this last leg of the collective agreement to ensure that no municipality applies for exemption. “We are also ready to challenge any exemption application by municipalities, given the current economic situation which workers find themselves in, especially the recent increase of the repo rate to 7.70%, a decision which will have dire consequences for municipal

workers and South Africans,” stated Magagula.

With the current collective agreement about to lapse.

SAMWU says t anticipates to begin new salary negotiations with the employers later this year. Magagula said the union will be embarking upon an extensive consultation proves with its members across the country, in order to finalize its mandate ahead of negotiations.

“We urge our members to participate in the mandate taking exercises which will be consolidated by the upcoming Collective Bargaining Conference. We are all aware of the financial situation which municipal workers find themselves in and as such, we want to ensure that the upcoming negotiations take workers out of this situation,” Magagula said.
