Nhaca launches R29 million reconstruction project

Community welcomes rebuilding of damaged bridge

KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca has on Monday this week officially launched a

massive R29 million project to rebuild the Hulett Bridge in Ward 02, Darnall, which was destroyed by floods in April last year.

The Hulett Bridge plays a significant role in this community as it is a conduit to reach local schools, the library and the clinic. Since the bridge's destruction, residents of Zamani, Soweto and Barracks have been struggling to get across, being forced to use roundabout detours regardless of the urgency of the trip.

As a result of the prolonged travel, there's information that some elderly citizens ended up defaulting in keeping to their clinic visit schedule, and some school-going children endanger themselves by trying to cross the Nonoti River at times using makeshift materials.

During the sod-turning ceremony, Mayor Nhaca presented the project consultants, Vuba Imagineers (Pty) Ltd, and project contractor, Benjivert (Pty) Ltd. Nhaca explained the cost breakdown that makes up the R29 million, mentioning that R3,5 million inclusive of VAT would go towards Professional Fees and R25,6 million would go towards construction costs.

The project will entail reinforced concrete bridge measuring 10.75m wide and 50m total length. The bridge components comprise foundations, abutments, wing walls, piers, deck slab, approach slab and parapets.

It will also feature mass excavations in fractured rock for bridge foundations, and approach road construction on either side of the bridge with a total length of 300m and asphalt finish over a carriageway width of 7,8m.

Many other features will also be included, to ensure high quality workmanship and longevity of the infrastructure, once completed.

Nhaca appealed to the contractor to do all in their power to complete the project as speedily as possible to ensure that the lives of affected citizens are restored and the living condition improved.

Hospice hosts Valentine's Dinner and Dance

In our edition dated 8 February 2023, in the article headlined “SANRAL loses R300m through toll fee suspension”, we mistakenly stated that Ilembe Chamber President Andy Horton was part of the high level meeting held in Durban. Mr Horton was not part of the meeting. The error is deeply regretted.

Dolphin Coast Hospice Association (DCHA) has reached a milestone. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Hospice held a successful Valentine's Ball recently, with tickets being sold out weeks before the function. The Hospice wishes to thank all

who contributed in cash and kind, towards the success of the event.

“Every board member should be proud of their efforts in hosting such a major event. The much needed funds raised will be of big help (to the organization),” the Hospice said.

The organization has also announced that its building project is back on track and transfer of the property is due by the end of March 2023.

DCHA is planning to host a Gala Dinner and other events to celebrate its 20th anniversary, during the course of the year.

The initiative benefitted the underprivileged through the distribution if high quality preowned clothing items.

Melville who was glad to take some goodies for the church. Also various flood victims from Lot 14 attended and enjoyed their spree.

“Revive's intent is to 'REVIVE' the true spirit of humanity, bringing together individuals from different cultures, race and religion and creating an impact in our community.

“A huge thank you to every individual that donated, assisted with the drive and distribution. We would like to place on record

Sunrisers Eastern Cape are crowned champions during the Betway SA20 final match between Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Wanderers Stadium. Evergreen Roelof van der Merwe illustrated vividly that he's still a premium player in the T20 format with a fine showing in the SA20 final. Moreover, the 38-yearold is credited with instigating the turnaround in Sunrisers Eastern Cape's

campaign after a poor start with skipper Aiden Markram stating he was a "leading character". Van der Merwe has no plans of scaling down his participation as his competitive fire still burns. Even at 38, the "Bulldog" still has a very serious bite.

Roelof van der Merwemere months after breaking Proteas hearts at the ICC T20 World Cup with the stunning catch that saw the Netherlands knock them out,

is back endearing himself to the South African cricketing public with his infectious enthusiasm and skill, headlined by a Man of the Match performance in the historic SA20 final here on Sunday. The wily left-arm tweaker produced a superb spell of 4/31 as Sunrisers Eastern Cape flouted expectations with a fourwicket victory over Pretoria Capitals, the cherry on top to finishing joint leading

wicket-taker (20) with Anrich Nortje. Yet, as much as Van der Merwe - who represented the Proteas before switching allegiance to the Netherlandsdelivered a defining contribution when the stakes were at their highest, it was the turnaround he instigated in the early part of his franchise's campaign that stands out.

After losing their opening two encounters, Sunrisers' fortunes changed once he was picked. Not that he'll take any credit for that.

For his skipper, Aiden Markram, his share in the team's triumph was stark. Van der Merwe's gamechanging abilities were on full show in front of a full house, striking with his first delivery to calm the nerves of a Sunrisers attack that seemingly tried too hard to exploit a good toss to win and a favourable surface.

Man City close gap on Arsenal

Manchester City shrugged off the uncertainty caused by a series of Premier League charges to close to within three points of Arsenal at the top of the table with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday. A cloud is hanging over the English champions after the Premier League hit the club with more than 100 charges alleging breaches of financial rules dating as far back as 2009.

If found guilty, City could face a severe points deduction or even relegation from the top flight. But City boss Pep Guardiola came out

swinging in defence of the club's hierarchy as he pointed the finger at jealous Premier League rivals for the accusations and his players followed him with a show of defiance on the field.

Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez all struck before half-time at the Etihad to edge ominously into Arsenal's rear-view mirror ahead of a clash between the two on Wednesday (tonight). Arsenal still have a game in hand, but City will now move to the top of the table should they win at the Emirates in midweek.

Sanathan Mundal to celebrate Shivarathri

Shri Sanathan Mundal and Community Centre will be celebrating Shivarathri on Saturday the 18th of February 2023, at 21 Greyridge Drive, Stanger Heights, commencing from 6pm to 6am.

Meals and Persad will be served.

The Mundal will appreciate your presence and participation in Lord Shiva's celebration. All are welcome. For further information please contact the President, Mr Rabi Hanuman on (083) 465-3303.

The Gunners' 1-1 draw at home to Brentford on Saturday opened the door for City and unlike last weekend, when the defending champions missed the chance to pounce with defeat away to Tottenham, this time they made no mistake.

Guardiola also learned his lesson from an experimental line-up at Spurs. Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Kevin De Bruyne and Gundogan were restored to the starting line-up and City looked much more like their old selves. The City support made their feelings known

before kick-off as the Premier League anthem was booed and a banner raised saluting the lawyer the club have hired to defend the charges.

Just four minutes in they had something to cheer as Rodri rose highest to power home a header from Mahrez's corner. Jack Grealish was in the mood to do some damage against his former club and only a brilliant finger-tip save from Emiliano Martinez denied the England international from finding the top corner.
