A woman from Charlottedale in KwaDukuza is expected to appear at the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court today (Wednesday). This follows a shocking incident in which a Grade 12 learner from Groutville High School was attacked with a substance believed to be dangerous acid, or some sort of chemical, allegedly by the suspect and her two daughters.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday the 12th of February 2023, at Charlottedale. Narrating her story, the victim, Londi Purity Thabethe says when she arrived on the said day, her mother informed that two girls from the neighbourhood had been looking for her. She says she then went to the girls' home, and upon arrival, a fight ensued between her and the two girls.

“I then phoned my mother who quickly arrived and started talking to the mother f these two girls (the suspect). The mother of these two girls then realised her daughters were losing the fight, and she shouted at them to use acid on me. The girls then poured acid all over my body, and I was rushed to hospital by private transport,” stated Londi.

The victim was admitted to hospital on the 12th of February and was released on Friday, the 17th of February. She has further alleged that, apart from an injection administered when she was admitted, she was never given any medication.

That was when Cllr Thobisile Nkosi, who is the KZN provincial deputy chairperson of the EFF, stepped in. When Cllr Nkosi

Londi Thabethe after the ruthless attack visited the Thabethe family to interview the victim, she says she realized Londi's condition was still dire, and that urgent intervention was needed.

“I took her to a private doctor, who administered some treatment before issuing a referral letter for her to return to hospital for further treatment. I am really appalled at the treatment she received from our local General Justice Gizenga Mpanza regional Hospital, where she was ignored during her entire stay.

“I have since spoken to a specialist doctor at Ngwelezane Hospital, who has agreed to see Londi. That is where she will be going this week, and we are hoping that she will receive better treatment there,” Cllr Nkosi stated.

Full recovery

The Principal of Groutville High School, Mr SC Gumede, said the school was providing full support

to the student, to ensure that she works her way towards full physical and psychological recovery.

“As a school we have encountered similar situations before, where learners doing Grade 12 experience major disruptions. We do have interventions in place to assist affected learners, including full academic support. We do have in place morning and afternoon classes, as well as weekend and holiday classes.

“We stay in constant communication with our learners through WhatsApp to ensure that they receive all relevant study materials. However for now, the focus must be on ensuring that the child achieves full recovery before we can commence with our intervention programmes. She will be re-integrated into the academic programme once she has fully recovered,” Gumede stated.

KwaDukuza ranks 22nd for murder

KwaDukuza police station tanks among the top 30 stations in the country to record high incidence of murder. The national crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki cele last week, for the quarter ended in December 2022, show that KwaDukuza is sitting at position 22 among SA's police stations with high murder case load, after recording 43 cases of murder, up from 35 reported in the comparative period a year earlier.

KwaDukuza also features among the top 30 police station in terms of attempted murder, after coming in at position 26. The police station registered 34 cases in the three month under review, as compared to 36 reported a year earlier. The scariest figure came in with cases of rape, as KwaDukuza ranked number 10 in this category countrywide, after registering 58 cases in the period under review, up from 51 reported in the preceding year.

Presenting the statistics, Minister Cele expressed alarm at the rapid escalation in the incidence of violent crimes in the country, in particular crimes involving the use of firearms. Just last week, a local KwaDukuza businessman and his son were shot during a robbery at their shop. The son later succumbed in

hospital.

Cele says figures show that between October and December 2022, more than 7500 people were murdered in South Africa. He said while police were intensifying operations to remove illegal firearms from circulation, cooperation by members of the public was vital, as police were not in a position to combat crime working in isolation.

“The SAPS will continue to intensify operations to detect and remove illegal firearms and ammunition, whilst legislation intervention in the Amendment to the Firearms Control Act, to address the availability of guns in our communities, is underway.

“Out of the 7 555 people murdered in the three months of reporting, 3 144 people were killed with a firearm, 2 498 people were killed with other weapons such as knifes, sharp and blunt instruments, bricks and in many cases bare hands.

“It is clear, a broader conversation must be had about what is at the heart of violent crime in the country.

“While gun violence is problematic and poses a serious threat to lives and livelihoods.

With the analysis of the current and previous statistics, it is quite evident that firearms are only part

Concerns over nonfunctional streetlights

of a bigger problem.

“At the core of the matter, is the human behaviour. We have to be honest as South Africans about the causes of violence and address them,” Cele stated.

The incidence of GBV, including rape and murder, was also refusing to abate, the Minister pointed out. He said, alarmingly, just under 6000 cases of rape recorded in the period under review, had occurred in the residences of the perpetrators, or in alternative palaces where the victims would have felt safe.

“The call on community's to be allies against crime cannot be understated, when it comes to the prevention and combating of GBV and Femicide.

“It remains a betrayal of humanity, to look away and ignore abuse and violence of anyone, let alone women children and other vulnerable groups in society.” Cele said.

The Minister also called upon SAPS provincial commissioners to take the lead in the fight against crime.

“We are calling on all Provincial Commissioners to intensify their provincial operations, focusing on troublesome stations and remove them from the TOP 30 high crime stations, both nationally and provincially.” The Minister stated.

Residents of Sundowner n Ward 16 have expressed concerns about streetlights that have stood non-functioning for months, thus giving rise to crime in the area.

DA PR Councillor Nerish Singh revealed that, following months of pressure on KDM's Electrical Department, the streetlights have finally been fixed. “This will increase visibility in the area as crime is on the rise,” Cllr Singh said.

Another fuel price hike looms

Overburdened South African motorists face another pain in March, as the latest data from the Central Energy Fund indicates that fuel prices will increase once again.

The expected increase shall apply to all grades of fuel, with a R1.26 and R1.20 increase anticipated for 93 and 95 grades, respectively. Diesel users will not be spared, as diesel 0.05% is expected to attract an increase of 37 cents per litre, with diesel 0.005% expected to go up by 38 cents per litre. Illuminating paraffin is also expected to increase by 41 cents per litre.

The latest increase forecast is attributed mainly to the ongoing

volatility in the global oil market, and the further weakening of the Rand. The local currency is currently on a nosedive, due to two factors, viz tough global conditions and, on the local front, political uncertainty and waning public confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In the first two weeks of February, oil prices and the local currency have been working against motorists, with both factors contributing to an overall under-recovery in fuel prices. Oil prices, which contribute to the movement in international product prices, have gradually started rising, while the Rand has weakened significantly against the dollar.

No room for rogue cops, vows Station Commander

Commander Brigadier SF

Mhlongo is a lady on a mission. Mhlongo has made it clear there is no room for rogue elements among the men and women under her command, and has also pleaded with members of the community to refrain from corrupting law enforcement officers.

Addressing the annual general meeting (AGM) of the KwaDukuza SAPS

Community Policing Forum (CPF) at KwaDukuza Town Hall on Wednesday last week, Mhlongo entreated all social partners to join the fight against crime and to stop playing the blame game.

The Brigadier made it clear that rogue police officers who accept bribes to squash criminal cases invariably collaborate with the same members of the public, who then turn around and complain about police not doing their work.

The Brigadier is determined

to get all hands on deck, in order to win the fight against crime.

“Let us work together. Pointing fingers is not going to help us. Let us prevent crime in our own areas, before we start pointing fingers,” Mhlongo stated.

The Station Commander feels the community is unwittingly frustrating crime fighting efforts by being reluctant to relay information to authorities.

“There are always people who witness crime, who actually see perpetrators carrying deadly weapons and robbing people, but (those people) elect to remain silent.

I'm appealing to members of the public to come forward and provide us with information,” she said.

Issuing an ominous warning about crime trends and the ability of law enforcement to crush criminal elements, Mhlongo lamented the isolationist approach that is often adopted by various arms

of law enforcement and civil society, adding that the war on crime cannot be won unless all stakeholders consciously choose to work together. She warned that criminal gangs were very organized,

determined and highly disciplined. A similar approach, she added, needed to be adopted by law enforcement in order to win the fight ahead, thereby achieving the goal of creating safer communities.

Premier reports progress after flood devastation

Role of amaKhosi in governance under spotlight

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the province has fully restored water services, which were affected by last year's floods, with priority being given to vital services that are needed in homes and for industrial activity.

“We have recently commissioned Aquaduct 1 and a reservoir that was extensively damaged by the floods. This is now producing more volumes of potable water to supply many parts of eThekwini Metro.

“We also completed the uThongathi Water Scheme and are currently addressing reticulation challenges for areas such as Hambanathi. Repairs to the damaged pipeline that supplies Umlazi, including Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, are at an advanced stage and we have full restoration of water supply shortly," said the Premier.

She was speaking during the debate of President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address. The debate was held on Tuesday at the Cape Town City Hall.

On human settlements

interventions, Dube-Ncube reported that all 135 mass care centres in eThekwini, Ugu, KwaDukuza and Pietermaritzburg, which accommodated flood victims who were left homeless and destitute in April and May 2022, were closed by December 2022.

“The support by national government has been phenomenal.

We have provided dignity and privacy to the families and individuals who lost their homes in the floods,” the Premier said.

Dube-Ncube said progress is also being made in linking the victims to permanent housing projects in land parcels that have already been identified in various affected municipalities.

“We have to date secured eight land parcels, which will be used for permanent housing solutions in the Western, Northern and Southern regions. A total of R325 million has been set aside.”

Dube-Ncube has also assured everyone (including visitors to the province) that they will enjoy this Easter Holiday season in Durban, as most beaches are open and water quality is being monitored.

She welcomed the State of the Nation Address delivered by President Ramaphosa, noting that it was an apt depiction of the situation faced by the country.

“There was no bending of facts, underestimation of challenges and cooking of statistics. The SONA was a clear demonstration of the level of respect and regard the government has for the people of South Africa,” DubeNcube said.

She thanked the President for his support to the province of KwaZuluNatal during the challenges the province encountered.

THANK YOU MAMA ASHANTI

I am Trishnee Naidoo from Ballito and I am here to thank Mama Ashanti for saving my marriage and life. I’m a mother of 3 and an entrepreneur. Due to covid in 2020 during the lock down I lost my business due to a lot of debts and my husband of 18 years left me for a younger woman because I was always crying with no money. I read about MAMA ASHANTI in the newspaper and gave her a call. She made an appointment the next day and when we met, she consulted and told me all my worries were the spell the other woman sent me. She helped me and within 4 days my husband was the crying, calling and apologising. I agreed to meet with him the next day, I forgave him, he left the other woman and we are back together happily married. MAMA ASHANTI helped me solve my financial situation, my business is back to normal.

King' Mbappe or 'out of order' Messi?

The 2023 Laureus World Sport Award nominees were announced on Monday with Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi set to go head-tohead for the biggest gong of them all. Both football superstars last played on opposite ends of the pitch in what has widely been lauded as "the best World Cup final ever", where Messi's Argentina beat Mbappe's France in FIFA's global

showpiece in Qatar last year. But in April the PSG duo will again vie for a piece of silverware after they were nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award along with Max Verstappen (Formula 1, Netherlands), Mondo Duplantis (Athletics, Sweden), Rafael Nadal (Tennis, Spain) and Stephen Curry (Basketball, USA). While Messi and Mbappe will be favourites to win the award, legendary Netherlands

midfielder and Laureus Sport for Good ambassador Ruud Gullit, believes Curry equally deserves the accolade for winning his fourth NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors.

Gullit, who alongside 70 other Laureus members, will get to decide who wins the awards in the eight categories.

Meanwhile, the 60-year-old hailed Morocco for their Breakthrough of the Year nomination following their

World Cup heroics in Qatar. The Atlas Lions, who were knocked out of the tournament by France, became the first African nation to play in a World Cup semi-final. The Sportswomen of the Year award will be hotly contested between nominees Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica, who recorded a fifth 100m World Championship title, and American 400m hurdler world-record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Saudis join race to buy Man United as deadline nears

Saudi Arabia has joined the race to buy Manchester United ahead of Friday's nominal deadline, according to a report, raising the stakes in what could be the most lucrative deal in sports history. The American Glazer family, who completed their takeover of the 20-times English champions in 2005, announced in November last year that they were open to a sale or investment.

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos company officially joined the race to buy the club last month, the

only bidder to publicly declare an interest so far. There have, however, been numerous suggestions of a possible Qatar bid, with the state's ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, is interested in buying United, just weeks after the energyrich Gulf nation hosted the World Cup. But with United's shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, brokers acting for the club will be obliged to consider offers even after Friday's 'soft' deadline expires.

The Glazers had signalled

they were open to both minority investment and a full takeover but the latter now appears to be their preferred option. Deeply unpopular with supporters since they saddled the club with huge debts in a £790 million ($961m) leveraged takeover in 2005, the Glazers further angered fans by backing the failed European Super League project in 2021.

United have partnered with Saudi Telecom, the country's biggest telecommunications company, before. The Telegraph reported sources

close to the country's 515 billion Public Investment Fund (PIF) had played down the likelihood of a statebacked bid to the regime given their existing involvement at rival Premier League club Newcastle United. The Glazers are seeking 6 billion for the threetime European champions, which would smash the record fee for a football club set by Chelsea last year. A consortium led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital paid

£2.5 billion for the Blues with a further £1.75 billion promised in further investment in infrastructure and players.

Any Saudi Arabian investment at United would prompt outrage from human rights groups who have spoken out against the Gulf state following the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A Qatari takeover would be opposed on similar grounds, with Peter Frankental, Amnesty UK's economic affairs director, saying it would represent "a

continuation of this statebacked sportswashing project". A successful Qatari bid would raise sporting questions as well, given the emirate also controls one of the club's European rivals, Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United have not won the Premier League since 2013 and have failed to win any silverware since 2017. They are third in the Premier League this season after an improvement in form under manager Erik ten Hag, who took over before the start of the current campaign.

Seventh heaven! Jadeja's spin wizardry bamboozles Australia

grabbed the remaining three. Ashwin struck in the first over of the day to get Travis Head caught behind for 43, three balls after the left-hander hit a boundary to add to his overnight score. Marnus Labuschagne attempted to take the attack to the opposition with the paddle shot and the reverse sweep but was bowled by Jadeja for 35. David Warner's concussion substitute Matt Renshaw looked clueless against spin in his eight balls at the crease before he missed an attempted sweep, giving Ashwin another lbw.

Jadeja, a left-arm orthodox, teamed up with fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to dismiss Australia for 113 in a morning session when the tourists' batting imploded, thanks to an overused sweep shot on a tricky New Delhi pitch.

The hosts romped to their victory target of 115 in the second session to guarantee the retention of the Border-Gavaskar trophy in the four-match series. They have won their previous three series against Australia and are now close to securing a spot in the World Test Championship final.

India lost skipper Rohit Sharma, run out after a fluent 31, and Virat

Kohli, who surpassed 25,000 international runs, stumped on 20. But Cheteshwar Pujara stood firm with 31 in his landmark 100th Test to steer the team home with a winning four as wicketkeeperbatsman Srikar Bharat, unbeaten on 23, looked on.

Nathan Lyon took two wickets to return a match-haul of seven.

Australia, who also lost the opener inside three days, crashed from their overnight 61-1 to get bowled out in 31.1 overs after losing nine wickets for 52 runs in just over 90 minutes of mayhem.

Jadeja improved on his previous Test best of 7-48 to add to his three in the first innings. Ashwin

Wickets fell like nine-pins and Nathan Lyon narrowly averted a Jadeja hat-trick but the bowler kept up the charge to wrap up the Australian innings, which started on a promising note near the end of day two.

Axar Patel set up victory with his counter-attacking 74 on Saturday, lifting India from a precarious 139-7 to just one short of Australia's first-innings total. The lefthander put on a key 114-run eighth-wicket stand with Ashwin to turn the tables on Australia, who kept coming back with Lyon leading the bowling charge.

Lyon returned figures of 5-67 with his off-spin and was supported by fellow spinners Todd Murphy and debutant Matthew Kuhnemann, both of whom took two each.

The Aussies suffered an early

blow ahead of day two when star opener Warner was ruled out due to concussion after getting hit on the head in his knock of 15. The third match is in Indore from 1 March.
