THE VISIONARY
BY MICHAYLA CAUGHLIN
Michayla Caughlin speaks with young designer Yvonne Lin, taking a peek into her inspiring life and blooming career. Q: Tell me a bit about yourself! A: My name is Yvonne Lin, originally from China; I came to Canada when I was 14 years old. It was hard when first I settled in Canada without any English knowledge and friends. Now, it has been 8 years, and I’ve made lots of friends who come from all over the world. Q: What made you pick Ryerson for your post-secondary education? A: I just finished my Fashion Design BA at Ryerson this June. I chose Ryerson because it is a prestigious fashion school in Canada - it was my first choice for school. I was nervous when I applied for Ryerson because I knew it is very competitive. I have enjoyed my years at Ryerson, meeting many friends that are as passionate about fashion design as me. Q: How much time did you put into your portfolio when applying? A: Once I decided to go into Fashion in Grade 12, I started to research and ask my high school sewing teacher, who taught me a lot more sewing skills than the course required, she suggested some fashion schools to me. It took me about an entire semester to prepare. Ryerson has very specific requirements for their Portfolio application; I paid attention to follow the instruction, hoping I could get in. Q: When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer? A: Studying fashion was a sudden decision that I made. I was always interested in drawing and illustration since I was little, but never thought about fashion until I saw my high school fashion show. I was inspired by the fact that the design students made their own garments and showcased them on the runway. Then I started to take courses and eventually came to Ryerson for further my education. Q: What matters to you the most as a fashion designer? A: Passion, and hard work. This is a very competitive industry. I remember Farley Chatto (the designer that I interned with) told me, “If you cannot still wow by your work after so many years in this industry, you may have to think about choosing another career”. That passion makes you work hard. I saw so many people in this career spend sleepless nights on their work. The career as a designer is not always as glamourous as it looks like on the runway.

Q: What does FORMATION mean to you? What/who was your main inspiration? A: FORMATION is an art-to-wear collection. It was inspired by the delicate paper columns of Michael Hansmeyer. His architectural details and design method both provided inspiration. The columns were viewed as emblematic of the complexity of life. FORMATION adopted the production idea of the columns by using plain white fabrics and transforming them into three-dimensional forms. Traditional hand techniques and innovative pattern drafting were combined. The garments are structured yet soft without over-sexualizing the female form. The collection was designed for contemporary women with a balance of femininity and toughness. Each piece stands alone as an art form itself. Q: Are there any pieces you wish you could have done differently? A: I’m rarely satisfied with my past work. There were all little flaws in them. I know it’s hard to make a perfect dress - I’ve yet to make one. Every work is a process and has room for improvement. Q: Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing. A: Researching, finding inspiration usually takes up a lot of time. Then I will start sketching. For the FORMATION collection I started with just sketching something abstract and then I figured out how to reach the idea. Before, I thought very technically then creatively; I would design only what I think I could construct, which limited me in my design. The new design process was much more interesting and more challenging since it involved taking something abstract and making it into something concrete, while still conveying its meaning to an audience. I usually make one to three prototypes before I use the real fabric.
“Every work is a process and has room for improvement.”
Q: What do you like/dislike most about being a fashion designer? A: The industry allows more creativity than many other careers. That is what I like the most. I like being creative and different. What I find challenging is that the deadlines are very tight. I am still learning how to present the work I am proud of and finish them in time. Q: Are your designs influenced by your heritage? A: I am very interested in traditional Chinese costumes. I love watching Chinese drama that talks about ancient Chinese History, mainly because I was so drawn by the garments that they wear. However, none of my work right now sees the inspiration from that. I still have not yet found my own way of combining both styles together. Q: Are there any fabrics/colors/prints/textures you prefer to work with? Any you avoid? A: I work a lot with texture (such as pleating, smocking), and solid color. I like the flow of chiffon and the structure of wool. The hand of fabrics is also important to me when choosing fabrics. After seeing designs in New Zealand and Paris, I was very inspired by prints. I am researching prints, and would like to try to create my own. Q: What can we expect to see next from you? A: Yes, I am starting on my Fall Ready-To-Wear collection. FORMATION is a more conceptual Art-to-Wear collection. I would like to see how I can do with more ready to wear clothing. I am researching the cutting of the garments right now. I don’t know how the collection will turn out as I am still designing it.

ith the constant specific representations of beauty around us, it’s not hard to believe that girls these days are attempting to achieve unattainable and unrealistic goals. They’re expected to be the best – the most beautiful, the skinniest, perfect and flawless. The prevalence of Photoshop is overwhelming - perfecting skin tones, slimming thighs and shaving stomachs. The images reflected in magazines are daunting; the task of looking like a model featured on these covers is exhausting. Many girls turn to unhealthy habits, trying to become someone that, frankly, doesn’t exist. It’s difficult (actually impossible) to achieve perfection, although that’s what magazines display, leaving readers feeling defeated. Magazines like Seventeen are finally taking a stand, and it’s in part thanks to Julia Bluhm. This 14 year old created a petition to get major magazine brands like Seventeen to use real images, untouched by the perfecting tools of Photoshop. Seventeen recently created their Body Peace Project, including a Body Peace blog where readers can ask ques-

no one is the same. We all have different shapes and sizes and we have to learn to rock whoever we are, while staying healthy doing so! Fueled by this ‘body peace’ campaign, 19 inter-
“They’re expected to be the best - the most beautiful, the skinniest...” my size define me”. It also includes vows to believe that “It’s far better to focus on how awesome I look in my jeans than the number on the tag” and to “remember that even the girl who I’d swap bodies with in a minute has something about her looks that she hates.” We at Xquisit love these pledges! To check out the full list go to: http://www.seventeen.com/ health/tips/body-peacepledge To date, 87,667 people have signed this “Body Peace Treaty” and the number keeps growing. Editor Ann Shokets describes the treaty as a “personal pact you make to help turn off those negative thoughts.” This is empowering stuff with a powerful message: everyone is beautiful at any size! No one is perfect, and
national editions of Vogue magazine have now pledged to not work with any underage models to help eliminate the image of an unattainable body size. This is far from the petition plea to “keep girls’ body sizes or face shapes unaltered and celebrate every kind of beauty”, but at least it’s a step in the right direction! They also declared that they will use models that, in their view, have a healthy body image. We respect this first step and hope in the future that Vogue and other fashion and beauty magazines alike take action in creating healthy body image for girls young and old. - Alison Smink Assistant Editor

Robyn Lawley, model
Age: 23 (June 13, 1989) Height: 6 ft 2 inches Agency: BELLA Models, plus size (over US size 10) From: Australia Major Accomplishments: Ralph Lauren fall 2012 campaign; winner of Australian Cosmopolitan Fun, Fearless Female, Rising Star Award 2011; and cover of Vogue Italia June 2011 Check her out: www.robynlawleyeats.tumblr.com
Photo by Steven Chee, Courtesy of Bella Models
Not only is Lawley a beautifully talented model, but she also has a food and recipe tumblr. She is a talented food photographer with a passion for delicious taste. Every single picture looks delectable! Scroll through for a mouth-watering experience. Her Story: She’s our new idol. Her attitude towards life is amazing; her carefree image and body love is so inspirational. She has some serious body peace, and it’s so empowering. Robyn defines having incredible curves. She began her modeling career when she was 16, but the pressure to lose weight and stay super slim was too much. In an interview she stated, “I was told to eat less, exercise more. But the thing with my body is that I’m big-boned; I have broad shoulders, I’m really tall, have big hips — it’s just not my body. And I love food! I don’t want to give it up for something that would make me unhappy.” Then after this realization she entered the world of plus-size modelling (which I believe is wrongly named, with a negative connotation). Since then, she’s become a major international success while staying healthy and true to her image! Can you say major role model? (Pun intended...)

THEIR PIN ON THINGS
By Sabrina Loeprich
Ever find yourself browsing through the internet, click, click, clicking around on sites but then later you’re frantically trying to find those cute flats or that delicious recipe from that website you just can’t seem to remember? Have no fear, Pinterest is here - where your categorized “pins” and “boards” can be as unique and personalized as you are! So whether you’re a soon-to-be, new, or experienced Pinner, may we suggest to you three talented Canadian Pinners to follow.
s i l l E y l Li
Lily Ellis is a wife and mother of three living in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Herself and her close friend Rachel created “Birch + Bird” two years ago by opening a vintage shop on Etsy, creating a blog and planning vintage/homemade markets in their hometown. When they first started Pinterest, it was a fairly new system but they soon learned just how great it was for collecting inspiration throughout the web, as well as sorting the images that were featured on their blog. Today, Rachel and Lily have their own separate Pinterest accounts and Rachel is living in Orlando, Florida (be sure to check out Rachel’s Pinterest here: http:// pinterest.com/thebeekeeper/). As for Lily, she is about to open a bricks and mortar shop called “Spruce Collective” in Abbotsford with four other like-minded girls. The shop will carry a combination of vintage treasures, new home decor products, and local handmade goods. It will also offer a variety of creative classes for the community.
WHY SHE’S PINNING: “Pinterest has enabled me to have a creative outlet, to work with clients on projects and to curate my own decorating sense in a way that wasn’t quite possible (or nearly as organized!) with the magazine tear-outs of days gone by. Our Favorite Board: Her “Studio Space” board. This board offers over one hundred ways of set-
ting up, organizing and designing an office space. We also enjoy her “Decorating with Books” board as a unique way for any reader, whether you’re a beach reader or a bookworm, to decorate any space with their own books.
Her Favorite: My Home Decor and Kitchen boards are my favourites as I think they really give a glimpse into my overall decorating taste.”

Visit Rosa’s Pinterest at www.pinterest.com/flutterflutter Rosa Pearson is a graphic designer based out of Vancouver, Brit-
ish Columbia. Along with graphic design, Rosa finds interior design to be a fabulous distraction, and Pinterest a perfect place to be inspired by both! Rosa started her blog, Flutter Flutter, in 2010 after stumbling upon the blogosphere while searching for inspiration for her kitchen renovation. Since this discovery, blogging has become a huge part of how she connects with other creatives! Rosa also has an Etsy shop called Flutter Flutter Studio, where she sells art prints & juju hats. WHY SHE’S PINNING: I originally joined Pinterest because the
Rosa P
folder on my computer where I stored inspiration was getting out of control! I love that I now have a storage space that’s easy to access, and as a blogger I really like that most images link up to their original sources so that I can properly credit the photographer.”

Our Favourite Board: Her ‘Graphic Design’ board, which has a beautiful display of typography, labels, and covers. Her love of graphic and interior design is well reflected in her Pinterest boards. Her Favourite: “My favourite Pinterest board lately is my Bathrooms board, since I’m planning/
hoping to overhaul both upstairs bathrooms in the near future. But really, my favourite changes depending on what project I’m working on at any given moment.”
Visit Nerissa’s Pinterest at www.pinterest.com/thenewdomestic Nerissa Goco is a graphic designer living in a little seaside village
called Tsawwassen, outside of Vancouver British Columbia. She lives with her husband Peter and adorable two and a half year old daughter, Luna. They have a blog called The New Domestic, where they document their adventures in Domestic Living 2.0 and Nerissa is also an owner of an online shop called The New Domestic Shop (shop.thenewdomestic.com).
o c o G a s Neris
WHY SHE’S PINNING: “I use Pinterest almost daily to gather all
things that inspire me. I pin everything from patterns, colour, fashion, and design, to packaging, recipes, products, and more. Pinterest has been perfect for me as I am always online and makes it easy for me to store things that interest me and organize them in different boards.”
Our Favourite Board: Her “Simply Fabulous” board. What can we say, it’s simply fabulous! What makes this board so unique is that it’s open to other contributors, including some of Pinterest’s most fabulous brands like Christian Louboutin, Valentino, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, etc. Follow this board and you’ll be sure to find an excellent assortment of all things trendy. Her Favourite: “I’d have to say its the ‘FOOD’ board. I love to cook and experiment with new recipes & ingredients. I’m also a big fan of food styling and food photography so I not only pin them for the recipes, but also for the visual aspect of the photo.”

BEET RAVIOLI
Stuffed with goat cheese in a brown butter shallot sauce.
THE DOUGH:
- 3 small beets - 3 large eggs (room temperature) - 2 cups all purpose flour - 1/2 cup semolina flour - olive oil
THE FILLING:
- 11 oz. Goat cheese - 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan - 1 egg - 1 tbsp. chopped fresh chives - salt and pepper, to your preference
THE SAUCE:
- 1/4 c. Butter - 1 shallot, diced - 1 garlic clove, minced - 2 tbsp. olive oil - 2 tbsp. toasted hazelnuts - 2 tbsp. chopped chives
68
HOW TO MAKE IT
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Chop the stems off your beets, scrub them and cut them in half. 3. Place them on a foil-lined baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper, to your preference. 4. Roast for 45 min – 1 hour, until soft. Then remove from oven and let cool. 5. Place your hazelnuts on a foil-lined baking sheet and toast in the already preheated oven for 4-5 minutes. Keep a close eye as you don’t want them to burn. Once toasted, place them in a small bowl and set them aside. 6. In the meantime, mix all of your filling ingredients together in one bowl, and place in fridge to keep cool. 7. Once your beets have cooled down, remove the skins and place them in a food processor. Add the remaining dough ingredients. 8. Blend until everything is combined, and a ball of dough begins to form. If you find that your dough is too sticky, add more flour a tablespoon or two at a time. The dough should still remain tacky, but not so much that it’s unmanageable. 9. Remove the dough from the food processor and knead it for a minute or two. Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. 10. Once it’s had a chance to sit, cut the dough in half and run it through the largest setting on your pasta roller. Add flour as needed to eliminate any stickiness. The dough should not stick to the rollers. 11. Fold the flattened dough in half and run it through again 12. Adjust the rollers to the next setting and run it through once more. 13. Repeat steps 12-13 until you arrive at the 5th setting. At this point, you should have a perfectly thin sheet of ravioli dough that you can set aside for the time being. Repeat with the second half of the dough. 14. Sprinkle a thin layer of flour on your cutting board and lay your first ravioli sheet down. 15. Remove your filling mixture from the fridge, and form teaspoon-sized balls 16. Place the filling balls at equal distances apart all along your first ravioli sheet. 17. Using a pastry brush, moisten the dough around the filling balls using a little bit of water. This will act as a bonding agent for your two ravioli sheets. 18. Grab your second ravioli sheet and place it on top of the first. Using your fingertips, gently push down all around each filling ball, fusing both sheets together. 19. Using a knife (or pastry cutter!), separate each piece of ravioli 20. When finished, bring a pot of salted water to a boil and add 4-5 raviolis at a time, using a slotted spoon to extract them once they’ve cooked and have floated to the top (this takes 5 minutes or so). 21. In the meantime, warm up a skillet and melt your butter. Cook on mediumhigh until butter begins to turn brown. Watch carefully so it doesn’t burn! 22. Add your garlic and shallots and cook on medium-low until softened. Then add the chopped hazelnuts and chives. 23. Toss your cooked ravioli into the skillet to coat and re-heat. 24. Serve and enjoy!
