Who are some of your role models when it comes to your music and why? Its too many to name professionally and I dont want to start calling names and miss one of my greats so I will have to say my family members are my biggest role models. If I had to pick just of them then my go to person for my music would have to be My cousin Payton Adams (Cousin Smarty Pants). He also started making my performance pieces. What is Southern Soul to you and why? I heard Southern Soul best explained as the perfect combination of Gospel, R&B, and the Blues. It is pure emotion music.

Portia Palmer

Miss Portia Tell us a little bit about your self? I was born in Baton Rouge, LA. No stranger to performing and always had a special love for acting, singing, dancing, writing and reciting poetry. In high school, she added choreography to her resume. Most of my singing was done modestly in church and local plays until the end of my Military term. Genre of Music you perform? Blues and Southern Soul What age was you when you started singing? My parents say I have been singing since I could speak

Artist a female in a male dominated industry do you feel its harder for you than your male counterparts? I am still figuring things out for myself so I find this question a little difficult to answer. Yes this industry was very hard period. I could tell you about my experience not just as a Music Business Woman. My journey is not going to be the same and comparing sometimes is counter productive to where I’m trying to go. God might have more in store for me that is why my journey was harder. What was the name of the first single you put out, and how did you come up with the name for it? My First Single was called “You chose the wrong chick” and I liked it but it was slow and promoting it was a little bit harder then “Get your money girl which was my second” Who inspires you to be you? My family again. I mean I am really a house party kind of lady and who’s house is better than my mom’s. My family really tries to encourage more judgment free zones and encourages healthy decision making. My mom and Aunts Bea Bea are definitely responsible. for helping people come out of their shell and if you ever meet them you will know why.

Who are some of the Southern Soul Artist do you listen too? Most of the people I have worked with I consider my friends so I listen to everyone’s music. Is southern soul an untapped industry? I think that is very fair to say What has been your greatest achievement as a Southern Soul Artist? Well having the trophy for winning Best New Artist 2017 ZBT Awards is a blessing but I am honored to have been nominated every year since I started to other award shows and voting charts. Where can readers here your music at? I’ve waiting so long to say this but “Google me Boo” Just kidding My music can be found at all of your online music stores. I also respond to mail orders.

What will your next project be ? I have some new music coming and I know people are going to love it!!!!!!!!! What advice will you give to some of these newer artist coming under the Southern Soul umbrella? Right before you get ready to quit remember why you started. Do you have a website of social media? We caught up with the famous actor singer Omar Gooding Jr during one of his down times during is acting and singing career ‌. What inspired you to become an actor and at what age? As far as inspiration, it was just in my blood. Both my parents were entertainers. I picked up a script for my older brother Cuba , from his then agent, Coralie Jr. When she saw me she asked me if I wanted to be an actor. What was your first acting role? I was 9 years old. My Mom agreed to allow me to audition and I had two in one day and booked the second. It was for the lead in an educational film about saying no to drugs with MCGruff The Crime . And the rest was history! What words of encouragement can you offer to inspire upcoming actors/actresses? Never take no for an answer! If it’s your dream and your passion then treat it as such. Hone your craft by watching , reading up on and asking as many questions as you see fit until you obtain as much knowledge as you possibly can about your craft. If you could change anything about the decision you have made in life, would and what would it be? To pay even more attention in school and LEARN more. I did the bare minimum and graduated high school . I saw no point in going to college since I was already making fantastic money and already had a career. But I find myself having to re learn things and educate myself on things that others consider common knowledge. Thank God for the internet đ&#x;˜? . As a actor what are some of the toughest challenges you have encountered? Acting has always come pretty natural to me but I’ve also learned to stay in my lane. I learned my strengths and weaknesses as an actor long ago. So now the only things that are tough and challenging are the physical jobs. Such as when I played star run-

ning back in the ESPN series Playmakers. What also made you decide after acting to get in the music business? I have always been in the music business. I signed a deal when I was in my early 20’s with a label called Thump Records and released a single called Mamacitas that was placed on the Low Riders 3 soundtrack. About a decade later I signed a joint venture deal with West Coast Mafia records and out out a compilation album with C-Bo! Since then I’ve been doin features and recorded a ton of songs with my group B’Nezha but other then another compilation album called Major Negotiations , we never released the majority of that music. Some of it is now available on Soundcloud under Big O. So I am very excited to be releasing my first Solo album titled The Excuse. It will feature a lot of songs that touch on my “ Excuseâ€? for taking so long to release a solo album and will be completely produced by Focus from Aftermath. What is the name of your first single you put out? The first single I released is called SWIM -ft Blakk and is available now on Itunes and apple music and all other streaming platforms . Did you ever thought your name will be come house hold? Yes. Lol. I’ve always dreamt big. And I’ve got a lot left in the tank. I am producer of the series I star in that is going into it’s 7th season called Family Time on the Bounce network. And I also write not only episodes for the show but all of my own music. Producing and directing films is next up đ&#x;‘?đ&#x;?ž What was the toughest role you had to play as a actor? Playmakers lol I blew out both of my hamstrings running the 40 back to back to back to back !! Do you feel that being a actor and a artist that some times there are conflicting roles? Not really. I love diversifying myself . Gotta lotta tricks in the bag so A lot of my roles go hand in hand. It helps when at this point in my career I can literally hand pick them.

What’s your opinion on the direction that today’s music is going? Why do you think I’m dropping an album! Enough is enough!! Kidding not kidding. I respect that things change. My parents thought our music was awful so I’m not gonna be that old judgmental guy. Some of the new hip hop I hear is a type of music that fits perfect with the lifestyle that the youth aspires to. My music reflects what I have experienced and grew up listening to. It was a different time. More competitive and in some ways more creative. But to each his own. My goal is to do ME. To create my own Brand and my own sound and share it with the world. So far so good. As a artist if you could pick any artist to do a callabo with, who would it be and why? Excellent question. I feel that I can blend well with a lot of musicians and artists. As long as they are serious about there craft and as much of a perfectionist that I am.. I think skies the limit. When you not doing acting or doing music during your down time, what kind of music do you listen to? And why I will say it depends on my mood. Am I going to a live event or a night out with my lady? Or am I going to work on my series or to a movie set? Am I on my way to perform or am I on my way

to Church? I may be bumpin some of my Dad’s music, some lf my own or some Gospel like Fred Hammond It really just depends. Most of the time I have it on satellite radio and I’ll bounce around from the latest hip hop to the latest r n b. Were can our readers find your music and the name of the singles? Go to Soundcloud and out in Big O. I just released what I call Throwback Albums . Which are compilations of music I’ve done over the years in anticipation on my solo album. My single is called Swim and you can download that as of Dec 31st 2018 everywhere. And my album , The Excuse, drops JAN 27th ! Which is also my son Omar Gooding Jr’s second Bday!! What’s your opinion when it comes to what hip-hop stands for? It stands for a way of life and encompasses the last few decades of rap and r and b. From the greatest ever to do it , to their musical offspring that represent them now. I’m just happy to be adding my own chapter. I’ve paid attention to the lyricists and vocal technicians that have come before me and am doing my best to do them proud. Instagram: @Omargooding Facebook: TheOmarGooding Twitter: TheOmarGooding

really hit me until I was older, who my mother was. When we were home my mother gave me the same chores any other young girl would have like cleaning my room, the bathroom, the kitchen, and when we had a pool, I was the pool girl. My mother did the best thing by making our lives as normal as possible. We love movies so we would have pizza and a movie or go to the movies often. When I went with her on the road I had tutors of education and performing arts. I learned to dance with her dancers and would occasionally go on stage with them. I learned a lot, but most of all I learned to be strong. My mother is a single parent and she raised me to be strong and to look forward to the future no matter what the past dealt.

Yaya Diamond Tell us a little bit about your self ? I am the daughter of Evelyn Thomas is where most would expect me to start, so I will start where expected; However, I am much more than that. I am a daughter, sister, mother, wife, and friend. I am a thinker, and lover of books written and in audio, I love music, and I love sitting outside listening to nature. I love working out, hanging out with my family, and Marvel Comics (books and movies). I love popcorn and trail mix. I enjoy the simple pleasure of a peaceful afternoon drinking a glass of cold water while talking. I love to cook, and natural medicine. I recently got my life coach certification, and I am a singer/ performer. What was it like growing up as the daughter of Evelyn Thomas? My mother, Evelyn Thomas, has always been a very down to earth person. Even though I traveled the world with my mother watching her perform in front of thousands at a young age, it never

Was it hard being in the music industry, cause of being judge in the shadow of your mom? I never lived in the shadow of my mother because she taught me that no matter who your parents are you will have your own destiny; and so I had no problem, because I didn’t expect my life to be like my mothers life. I am very blessed to have had individuality, since I was young, instilled in me by my mother. She always said I was a smart and special person with a destiny made especially for me, and this kept me from feeling the pressure that most children of famous celebrities feel, and any envy or jealousy as well. Name one of your favorite songs you like when your mother song it? My favorite song by my mother is “My Heads in The Stars released in 1977. I was 5 years old when that song came out and l loved the imagery of seeing my head in the stars. Still to this day it is my favorite song, and I love to sit outside and gaze at the stars while singing this song. Was there any pressure when being around your mother ? No. I really did feel like I was just living life, albeit a bit different, but still as normal as it could be. I spent time with my mother traveling, and when I got tired my mother would send be back to Chicago to spend some time with my Grandmother and Godmother where I would go back to a regular schedule of school, homework, and chores.

Do you feel that being around your mother you have seen the good and back in the music industry? I saw only the good, my mother made sure of this. She protected me diligently, and made sure I was with my tutor during business meetings. I saw the joy it brought her to perform and travel, and to this day she loves her fans. How did you know you wanted to perform/sing and when? Wow! I remember my boyfriend, now husband, gloating over how good I was and how I should be a professional singer. I did chorus all 4 years of high school and then Italian Opera in College, but I never really took it seriously until I needed to use it to bring in some money to pay the bills. It became a way to make a living and that’s when I knew I had to do it professionally, which was around 1990. How long have you been singing ? This is a gray area. It depends on a couple of factors. See when I was a baby my mother would practice singing in the living room and I would, as my mother put it, try to sing with her. She said she would tell me to be quite, but I would start right back up again when she resumed her practice, I was around 6 months old or so. My mother had me take vocal lessons in the 1980s, and all through school I have vocal coaching. So I have been singing all my life really, for money since 1990, and professionally since 1993 or so. What genre of music do you perform?

I have sung rock, Gospel, Italian Opera, Pop, and currently sing Funk with my band Reverend Barry and The Funk. What is it like being the daughter of such a great legend in the music industry? It is an honor and a privilege. We are all born into something, I just happened to have been born into something great. My mother is my inspiration, first love, and my dad. I know that last one sounds funny, but she was a single parent and deserves both titles. What is your feed back between hip hop and politics? It is a hard place to be for sure. Hip hop was always reality in song for me, and politically speaking, should be an awakening. I will say the lyrics of Hip Hop songs should be dissected and taken to heart when trying to fix what is ailing our youth, neighborhoods, and life itself. I have seen some of these lyrics come to life in the news, especially where I am originally from, Chicago. Unfortunately I have not seen substantial evidence in where politics has made a positive difference, but I pray one day it will. Now what is this we hear you have a podcast? Yes. I have been podcasting since 2009 on “Yaya Diamonds Dream Chasers Radio”. We are on Iheart, Spotify, Blogtalk, Google, Spreaker, Stitcher, and so many more. I also broadcast on FM Radio, and now have my own Roku Station “Yaya Diamond TV’.

What is it about... Dream Chasers is about people who are going after their dreams no matter what stage they are in. We interview the beginners as well as the advanced in almost every field. We focus on the how, why, where, and any advise they may have for others trying to go after their dreams. What are some of your goals when it comes to the entertainment side of your world? Happiness. It makes me happy to entertain, help, and talk with others. My goal is so simple, it may be impossible to believe, but I want to be happy with what I am doing in life, and who I am doing it with whatever that may be. I want to have awesome and incredible stories to tell when I am old and gray. If you could explain what is it like in your world how would you describe it? Never a dull moment. As I sit here doing this interview it is currently past midnight. This is normal for me because I believe in what I do, and I love finishing things, it is an addiction. I keep a rigorous schedule between the band, podcast, meetings, recording, studio, taping, and whatever else may come up. A day in a life would be at least 16 hours long and packed down to the travel time. It is especially satisfying to be in my world. I get to perform in front of thousands of people, open for infamous groups, and live the life my mother said I would have, one designed just for me. It is not always perfect, and I have my ups and downs, but I don’t envy anyone, nor am I jealous of anyone, and that makes my life worth living. Thank you so much for this opportunity my friend, it has been a pleasure! With love always, Yaya Diamond
