Reticulated Form. U.S. Air Force Academy/ Flight Simulation Center, Colorado Springs. Built in the 1950’s, the campus is subject to Walter Netsch’s own “Field Theory”, being arranged as an open-ended system that is inherently generative, implying that it can proliferate and evolve endlessly. A dendrite structure is inserted in the “charged void” of this remarkable armature, injecting lightness and organic balance inside the bounds of military discipline. Parametric project entirely designed in CATIA.

Reticulated Form. The US Airforce Academy Flight Simulation Center required for an atypical insertion to infiltrate through the series of cellular structures describing the patterned MAT buildings and layout. Using as inspiration Erwin Hauer’s screen walls, a series of systems were parametrically designed with the intent of studying various conditions: aggregation, division, weaving, bundling, blending.

Soft Space Agile Involutions. Zacatecas, Mexico. Soft Space employs sustainable textile architecture, while integrating flexible solar nano-materials, to create a new bus station and market space for the city. The new construction will be acting as a major urban connection between the sacred site of la Bufa, the city with its major nodes and the underdeveloped neighborhood of Del Nino. Attention has been given to the indigenous cultural values of the city, which constitute an integrative design force.

Ghost Laboratory. Halifax - Nova Scotia, Canada. Ghost 7, Shobac Cottages, directed by Brian MacKay-Lyons is the result of the assiduous collective work driven by the contagious passion for the constructible, which “both fatigues and rejuvenates, humbles and makes one proud (The Dance of Construction, Juhani Pallasmaa). The widely published project is now in use and houses the attendants of the Laboratory. The transfer of architectural knowledge through direct experience is one aspect I have constantly tried to incorporate in my work ever since.

Best in Show Design Award. University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, Texas. The factory design for the Tarkett facility addresses the implementation of the necessary climatic and day lighting strategies through the use of natural ventilation, louver systems and ventilation pools underneath the concrete slab. The design is characterized by a multi layered fifteen foot thick west facade, which reveals through the depth of its image, the manufacturing conditions inside. The means to explore the complex conditions of this transitional screen is a series of detailed section drawings.

Saintes Study Abroad. Saintes, France. In the Memorial to the Romanian Revolution pain is understood as having an elevating potential. A house of research is provided for the decisive, yet mysterious events of the Romanian abolishment of communism. The tree growing through the concrete wall symbolizes relentless evolution, and invites for reflection on the blood adorned Christmas trees of December 25th, 1989. The east Braille wall is a metaphor for ubiquitous matter, yet unseen by a blinded heart. To comfort this dis-ease the spirits make themselves present in the only form they can exist, as Light.

Rome Drawing Seminar. Rome, Italy. The seminar explored the historical city through on-site charcoal and graphite isle drawings. The relatively large format, 24 by 36 inch and 28 by 20 inch, required for a different engagement of the body in the act of drawing. The trace on paper starts from the elbow, the arms contributing directly, as opposed to sketchbook drawings making most use of the wrist movement. A more thorough embrace of the subject to be drawn, perhaps.

Reflections on Paper. In Transit. The ongoing body of work represents the constant effort of maintaining a sketchbook as a means for the hand and the mind to encounter unexpected expressions on paper, without having as a necessary goal the mimicking of reality. The media is often a combination of ad-hoc available drawing tools, such as ink, graphite, water, wine, coffee, flyers.
