Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2019 XUANRONG WU 952040 SHIQI TANG STUDIO 30
Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Signs and symbols reflect direct information to show objects, but diagrams mainly show the concepts and relationship between them. Sign can be classified into icons, symbols and indexes, which express information in a dynamic object. The connections between them are not clear. An index always conveys measurement by comparison, having relationship with its form and content. Symbol is one of the signs that refers to object by formal representation. According to Zeara-Polo, diagrams are used as a tool to collect concepts and ideas based on human ability. A diagram cannot have a representational role.

Week One
Precedent Analysis
1
2 1.tracing structure lines, connecting top and bottom 2.rebuilding the bottom lines to build surface 3.building surfaces by curves and structire lines
3 First, tracing top, main framework(pipe) and bottom based on the plan view. Then, putting top circle at the specified height according to section plan. Third, connecting top circle and bottom by structure lines. The surface and curved opening is special in this pavilion, so the most important step is that rebuilding the bottom lines to curves and making surfaces by these curves, structure lines and top circles. The final step is making structure lines into pipes based on actual model.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Based on suggest of Herberger, designers should create spaces that are adaptive, flexible and multi-purpose. The objects should show different functions in the different time. The MoMA PS1 is a visual and functional pavilion with large scale. What is important is that MoMA PS1 made full use of microclimates by shade, because it has vertical structure which like chimneys.

Week Two
Isometric
Isometric view The view I chose is the southwest view to show the different height structure and surrounding wall. The densest area is shown on the front in left. The most important feature of this pavilion is the surface and the curved opening. In order to highlight the characteristics, the bottom lines were rebuilt as opening pipes. The circulation part mainly demonstrates human walking path and gathering area, which is influenced by the structure of the pavilion and the furniture in that. To be more details, where the structure is more compact, less walking path there is. Because the narrow space is not convenient for people to walk. The bench in pavilion impacts the density of people gathering. The threshold part mainly shows the relationship with the scale and height of top structure and heat dissipation function of pavilion. the top with higher altitude is more difficult to dissipate heat. The top with lager size is much easier to dissipate heat. The pavilion is designed for people relaxing in summer, which means the cooling function is important. Therefore, the threshold part is based on the dissipate heat ability.

Week Two Diagrams
Circulation Diagram
Threshold Diagram
There are four main entrances and exits in MoMA. The vertical structure with different size and height determine the speed of people walking. The furniture in MoMA, bench, which influences the gathering area in the pavilion.
The individual vertical structures have different scale and height that impacts the temperature in the pavilion. The higher the height, the harder it is to dissipate heat. The smaller the scale of the top, the harder it is to dissipate heat
