PROJECT 0 WARM UP EXERCISE (MAPPING)

Honestly, this is my first time of tracing maps. This project is interesting and, of cause, full of challenge. The reason that I choose SF Zoo is it is dynamic, unique, and mysterious. So I decided to present it in three different techniques landmark tracing, direction tracing and region tracing.

LANDMARK TRACING For the first step, I traced the shape of the land, buildings, and roads. The buildings and lake are marked with oblique lines or curve pattern.

DIRECTION TRACING Secondly, I emphasized the road direction by using single dot line to make it clear and clean.

REGION TRACING Finally I was focusing on presenting in a very interesting and representational way – the animal world – to show the specific king in each zone.

IMPLICATIONS OF PROJECT 0

THREE MAPS OF SAN FRANCISCO ZOO

After finished these three tracing, I have learned a lot about the design languages – what and how you want to present to your audience by using groups of elements in many different ways. I was proud of my tracings as they have strong languages and visual impact.

PROJECT 1 – MONDRIAN EXPLORATION

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) Mondrian was a contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed neoplasticism. His Abstract Art has great impact as an inspiration. Depends on the Mondrian, I drafted 3 benchmark presentation.

I was inspired by this ambitious design – Bird’s Nest in Beijing China, and following the three points in the Mondrian to expand three nest with bridge connection.

The piano, what a magic musical instrument that always gives people inspiration. It is dynamic, rhythmic, and elegant.

I combined the elements of previous graphics and created my third draft, which is my chosen of expanding on model. And then basic on the draft I made some changes for the site plan of my first model.

THE FIRST ITERATION One of the most important event in life is getting married. So in the very beginning, a heart to heart wedding chapel is my concept for this project.

MATERIAL

MAIN MATERIAL I used bamboo sticks throughout the whole skeleton of my model since it is easy to cut into pieces and its price is reasonable.

PROCESS After finished two heart shape, which were the elevations of the opposite side, I started to reinforce the skeleton of my model with bamboo stick surface.

THE SECOND ITERATION

Unfortunately, my first model was broken by an accident and deviated into several parts. However, this is a huge progress of the innovation of my model because it has more visual impact when I reconnected them with different angles. In my second iteration, the wedding chapel became more opening and dynamic.

THE THIRD ITERATION After I remodeled the structure of the first model, I started to think about how to make it more functional and stable. In general, a wedding chapel has to be built with door, windows, aisle, sitting area, dining area, and dancing area, etc. Then I added one more layer in the left side and added a wall with door and windows in the right side. And then I separated the area by using stick on the ground. In my third iteration, I focused on how to go further on my model with the same design languages.

THE FINAL ITERATION Approaching the final iteration!

In the last phase of work I focused on the decorations of my wedding chapel as new couples will walk down the aisle during a romantic ceremony. Even though it sounds like a small case, I still spent plenty of time on it. I tried several materials, such as small heart shaped wooden buttons, natural leaves, and cheerios, to present different textures of the amenities of the wedding chapel.

THE SHADOW The clear lines and surfaces of the wedding chapel create amazing shadows in different angles in the sun. These shadows present another landscape of the chapel.

FUNCTIONALITY It has: -

Marriage Proposal Area Walking Aisle Dancing Stage Flower Decor Wall and Roof Dining Layers Audience’s Sitting Area

After refined my model again and again, finally I achieved my expectation. Now my wedding chapel is dynamic, romantic, functional and stable. Sixty hours of working on this is worth!

PROJECT 2 - THE SUKKAH

Traditionally, a sukkah is temporary dwelling which represents the children of Israel who wandered the deserts for 40 years; our sukkah is a modern twist and representation for the wandering young adults of City College of San Francisco. Our sukkah is welcome to all types of people and thoughts. Our goal, is for people to find the answers they need and seek just by simply absorbing the natural vibes that our sukkah releases.

SITE ANALYSIS

The high platform gives the site a wide view of the city. The place is large and not frequented much neither by foot or car, hence rather quiet. Taking the same path as the viewer walking up to the sukkah, the wind blows from the back. The sun faces it and illuminates the entrance.

ETROG

Design wise, we were all inspired by the simplicity and natural beauty of the Etrog. In the Festival of Sukkot the Etrog represents the heart and is therefore one of the most important components, which is why it is so obviously apparent in our design.

INSPIRATION

From our shape to ever so apparent citron tree in the middle, the Etrog is represented in a natural and clean way. Our airy design is perfect for not only absorbing the gorgeous view but also for reaching your personal conclusions and insights.

FIRST ITERATION The shape is a blossoming citrus with movable walls. The base was to be an octagon with five petals and three openings for the entrance; The walls itself were curved, and they created a round smooth shape of the structure.

SECOND ITERATION

DIGITAL MODEL

The organic shape has remained but is not movable. It became a closed structure with eight pipes and three rings.

We are using the rings to control the shape. 3D MODEL

BUILDING. RINGS

To make a desire curve, the holes in the structure were made with different angles. Bottom ring has an hole with 21 degree facing outside of the structure, the middle ring – straight holes through the ring (90 degrees), and the upper ring has a 45 degree angle.

STRUCTURE IN PROGRESS

To make the rings rigid, we used biscuits, overlapping joints, glue and brads to hold it all together.

By making the rings stiffer, we avoided the issue of the pipes crushing the center ring/entrance.

STRUCTURE IN PROGRESS. THREATS Once we installed the basic structure, it started to twist! We installed control cords to form cross bracing on the lower section. Problem was solved. So strings become a part of the design.

INTERIOR DESIGN Plant

Table Glass Weights Pot Water

THE HANGING TABLE AND THE BUILD-IN PLANT -

Stability In order to strengthen the stability of the structure, we succeed in adding about 35lbs of weight by using a hanging table and a lemon tree.

-

Functionality The hanging table leaves more horizontal space underneath for organizing eight chairs.

-

Aesthetics The shape of the table is perfectly echoing the upper ring. Whether the floating table or the build-in plant is giving you a completely unique atmosphere and landscape.

GIVING MORE WEIGHT (About 35 lbs)

NESTING CHAIRS

The chairs are multifunctional: -

function as seats; can be grouped into the bench; Stabilize the central weight.

SKIN

Accenting the entrance is a symmetrical opening that we curved from the skin, allowing us to see the view of our city. The round opening matches the structural form of the sukkah; at the same time, it naturally creates “windows’ and the entrance. Each side has little openings for wind and light to come through.

FABRIC

We choose Lycra Spandex Fabric with 4 Way Stretch. Even though the fabric was perfect, we encountered some problems such as -

installing grommets;

-

tearing;

-

the stretch of the fabric.

MATERIALS -

Plywood; PVC pipes and caps; Lycra Spandex Fabric with 4 Way Stretch; Grommets; Rope; Biscuits; Zero rings; Hooks.

Our style was meant to be very light, simple and elegant, so we choose a contrast of white and wood. The fabric creates an airy atmosphere and openness. The simplicity of the materials creates a peaceful and neutral environment, which allows people to experience it without any destruction.
