[ PROJECT 12 : THE KITE WORKSHOP ]
PROJECT 1. THE KITE This project is interesting and, of course, full of challenges. Using components to create the kite is my big idea.

INSPIRATION Big Idea: The Folding Triangle Shape COMPONENT
FIRST ITERATION In the first iteration, I choose the folding shape as the component of my kite and use six of them stacking by strings to make it flexible. Material: Straws - a kind of light material to make the frame of the kite. In addition, easy to fold and connect together. Rice paper - very light and good texture. Strings - a kind of elegant decor and connecting tool.
[PERSPECTIVE]
Axon STRENGTH: Very light weight, flexibility and dynamic. WEAKNESS: Weak structure, too symmetry.
[PLAN ]
OPPORTUNITIES: The component might connect in a more strong and interesting way.

SECOND ITERATION
INSPIRATION Harpa Concert Hall Big Idea: The stereol Shape COMPONENT
Axon STRENGTH: Elegant, irregular, solid WEAKNESS: Low efficiency OPPORTUNITIES: Use proper materials to shape the structure.
THIRD ITERATION As the previous material (wood) takes me forever to build, I decided to use paper instead of it. Structure: Inspired by my instructor’s idea, I create a more metrical structure that makes it connect stronger. However, paper is not solid enough to hold the shape.
FOURTH ITERATION Huge progress! Finally, I decided to use acetate instead of paper. It is solid, as well as its transparency is gorgeous.
ORIGINAL MODELLING PROCESS Step 1: print out the unrolled surface.
Step 2: fold it as an component and connect them one by one.
Step 3: join four sides.
Step 1: print out the unrolled surface.
Step 2: fold it as THREE components and connect them by sliding.
Step 3: join two sides of the kite by sliding as well..
MODELLING PROCESS ADVANCE Step 4: join the left two sides by glue.
Step 5: join four sides.

PROJECT 2. KITE WORKSHOP This project, expended by project 1, is much deeper and closer in the architecture aspect. As an Architect, we should be thoughtful, but not complicated.
The location (the Site) for the Kite Workshop is in the east of the Golden Gate Park, which is the connection of URBAN and NATURE in San Francisco, CA.
SITE ANALYSIS
[ THE PATHWAY IN PARK ]
[ THE STREET IN URBAN ]
[ THE COMMERCIAL AREA ]
[ NORMAL WIND DIRECTION ]
Trails in Golden Gate Park are narrow and organic. The site is quite, natural, and fresh.
There are two main streets near the site, Stanyan st. is parallel to the park while the other one, Haight st. is vertical.
The numerous of commercials are on sides of Haight st. It is busy, noisy, crowded, which is much different than the opposite side.
The normal wind direction comes from north and veers often.
SITE MODEL MAKING
1
[ SIX STUDY MODEL ]
STUDY MODEL 1 The concept came out from the word “mirrored, which is related to my kite. The main building is formed as a mirror, which is also the shape of my kite. I also created a hallway, the six giant rectangles in different size as the public space in front of the gate of the building. Then it becomes a more metrical welcoming way to the natural side.
[ STUDY MODEL ONE ]

[ SIX STUDY MODEL ]
STUDY MODEL 2 The second study model presents the word “unique.” As I used two different materials to shape my kite, I used the same idea to form my second model. The “unique” material gives client more visual impact and refreshes the whole concept. I also build a hanging bridge in the middle of the building as a leisure space.
[ STUDY MODEL TWO ]

[ SIX STUDY MODEL ]
STUDY MODEL 3 My third study model presents the word “metrical.” This form has a strong rhythm and metrical sense. In addition, this musical shape softens the boundary line between the city and nature.

[ SIX STUDY MODEL ]
STUDY MODEL 4 The word “components is the concept of my fourth study model. I used several folding triangles to create two relative buildings. Since my kite is made of 60 components, this model is given the same idea but it is in different shape of components.
[ STUDY MODEL FOUR ]

[ SIX STUDY MODEL ]
STUDY MODEL 5 My idea is to create “transparent” boxes which are in different heights and positions.
The transparent rooms can let people see through and know each area better. They create interests in work as well as leisure in life.
[ STUDY MODEL FIVE ]

6 [ SIX STUDY MODEL ]
STUDY MODEL 6 The word “transitional” is present the sixth model. It is like a giant but irregular dome, which is shaped by beans. It is open, leisure and elegant.
[ STUDY MODEL SIX ]
[ FIRST ITERATION ]
1st ITERATION While reviewing all the already learned/ researched, I developed organization and came first conceptual model.
stuff I have uncovered/ the program up with my
There is a main hallway as a transition and the workshops and other space are actually expanding directly from the surfaces of the hallway. The gradual changing forms create the unique scene in different perspective. There are unique, but also relevant.
[ PLAN ]
[ SECOND ITERATION ]
2nd ITERATION In the second iteration, combining the shapes of my previous model, I created a metrical, leisure, transitional shape which made by two giant domes. Since I used paper as the material of my conceptual model, the biggest obstacle is to be thoughtful about which kind of material could be used in the final model that can create the shape as well as have a strong construction.
[ FINAL ITERATION ]

[ THE ORIGINAL CIRCULATION ]
Trails in Golden Gate Park are narrow and organic. The site is quite, natural, and fresh. However, the number of barely two entrances is obstructing traffic flow.
[ THE DEVELOPED CIRCULATION ]
The Kite Workshop maximum retains the organic and natural pathway in park, even creates more entrances that can reduce the crowded flow.
[ THE PROGRAM ADJACENCY ]
The commercial area in the Kite Workshop is close by the commercial area at Haight street. This program organization is more efficient because it can be one of the target that attracting people to come inside the building.
[ REDUCING OF WIND RESISTANCE ]
The narrow side of the Kite Workshop, which faces to the North, is reducing of the wind resistance from the normal wind direction.
