ACTIVITY 1: GOALS 1. Think on your own about the aims of a field trip to Montgrí mountain and castle. 2. Then pair up to discuss and compare your ideas . 3. Write at least 3 learning objectives:

4. Finally, share your ideas in a full class discussion.

ACTIVITY 3: GEOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY 7. Read the text and make sure you know all the words in it: Montgrí Massif. The stratigraphic series is composed of two units: one allochthonous (Mesozoic) and a second one autochthonous (Paleogene). Structurally, the Montgrí Massif is part of a thrust belt which has been divided into three parts of different development and age. Both parts are affected by ample synclinal folds of NE-SW directions and fractures of NW-SE orientation. The fractures condition the torrential streams as well as the karstic phenomena present in the Massif. These and the eolian actions are the main causes of the present geomorphology of the Montgrí This is the geological map of the trip area

8. In our ascension wi’ll be tread up mostly 2 types of rocks, conglomerates and limestone. With the help of the Clastic Sedimentary Rocks image, fill in the table below: ROCK NAME TEXTURE SEDIMENT NAME COLOUR OTHERS

9. In accordance with the law of superposition: “the rock at the bottom is older than the rock on top” But in Montgrí Mountain we can find a dispositional rock anomaly, why?

10. Let’s revise the tectonics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmX8BmD3L7k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVsGovq_f7Y https://www.nps.gov/articles/faults-and-fractures.htm

11. Label the diagram using the following geological terms:

FAULT-PROPAGATION FOLDS form at the tip of a thrust fault where propagation along the decollement has ceased but displacement on the thrust behind the fault tip is continuing. The continuing displacement is accommodated by formation of an asymmetric anticline-syncline fold pair. As displacement continues the thrust tip starts to propagate along the axis of the syncline.

12. Order the images:

ACTIVITY 4: DESCRIBING SKILLS 13. Are you good at describing things? Now you are going to describe a plant to your partners and they have to guess its name. Tree, shrub, herb? SIZE LEAVES? FLOWERS? OTHERS. SMELL? TOUCH?

ACTIVITY 5: ROLE PLAY 15. Explore the websites of the location you will be visiting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montgr%C3%AD_Massif http://www.visitestartit.com/biblioteca/items/508/GB_DOSSIER_PROFESSIONAL_reduit.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8fM9G5jwFM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNeixdTXkZU

16. Work in pairs. Each pair is going to become a “specialist" in one aspect of the topic that we will be studying during the field trip. The different subject areas to research, related to the field trip, could be: a. History b. Architecture c. Medieval life d. Defending a castle e. Vegetation f. Fauna g. Environment and natural parks h. Tourism i. Landscape j. Geology k. Olive cultivation l. …. 17. Look up information on the websites above and fill in the table with useful information about Montgrí:
