RECALIBRATING ATTITUDES

H

APPY 2018 FOLKS. The Paint & Panel team wishes you every success. We are going to be making our usual efforts to inspire, inform and connect you with others in the industry who can help you to achieve your goals. Scanning is in your horizon now that both Holden and IAG have said that pre and post scans must be carried out when you are undertaking a repair. We’ve had some interesting discussions on this subject on our Facebook site and in our Next Generation group. I’ve been asking repairers about scanning and recalibration for a couple of years and reactions fall into three categories. Those who instantly whip out their scanning devices and say they’ve been using them for ages, those who say they prefer to farm it out, and those “We’ve seen a massive upswing who stick their fingers in their ears and shout “la, la, la, la la”. in repairers sharing information One person on Facebook started a comment “why should we upskill?”. Never mind what the rest of the comment went on to say, it caused a sinking pit to with each other over the last few open up in my stomach. Quite simply if you don’t embrace the changes in vehicle years - the better the community, technology and upskill to be able to ensure that you are sending a vehicle back to the healthier the industry.” the customer which will perform how the manufacturer intended, then you shouldn’t be repairing cars. On new cars this means scanning and on this issue we have devoted a fair amount of page space to why you need scanning tools and what you might need. The most important piece of advice is to ask other repairers what they use. Now, it’s taken about six years to build a community of repairers on the Paint & Panel Facebook page but now we have a good one, with people willing to advise. Please use it to reach out on any issue, especially on purchasing equipment that could prove an expensive mistake. We’ve seen a massive upswing in repairers sharing information with each other over the last few years, especially in our Next Generation group – the better the community, the healthier the industry. My new year’s resolution is to use the Paint & Panel communication channels to attract young people into our industry. We have to mobilise as a community if we’re ever going to achieve this. Right, I’ll get off my soapbox now and wish you all the best for 2018.

AXALTA REJECTS INDUSTRY SUITORS AXALTA HAS ANNOUNCED it has exited buyout conversations with Nippon Paint, with the latter unwilling to meet Axalta’s expectations regarding company value. Only days after announcing an end to buyout talks with AkzoNobel, Axalta revealed it was in discussion with Nippon Paint, as Nippon looked to acquire the industry giant. Axatla chairman and CEO Charles W. Shaver said despite the two recent bids from Nippon and AkzoNobel, operational

and company strategy remains unchanged. “While neither deal came to fruition, the keen interest by these companies underscores Axalta’s global leadership position. Our current and future operational plans have not wavered during these discussions. “I would like to thank our customers, investors, suppliers, and employees for their patience and support as we have considered these strategic options.”

INFINITI GOES BEYOND THE NEW QX50 is a premium mid-size SUV and claims to have world-first technologies. The QX50 is built on an all-new platform, featuring a front-engine, front-wheel drive-based layout. It represents the first automotive use of Super High Formability (SHF) 980MPa high-tensile steel. The high-tensile material can be molded into unprecedented shapes, saving weight and representing a torsional rigidity improvement of 23 per cent over the current QX50. This segment-leading rigidity allows the car to resist flex and vibrations, as well as reduce the level of noise transmitted to the cabin. Infiniti’s customers have stated their

desire to remain a key element in the driving equation, so the brand’s vision for autonomous driving is a step removed from the notion of fully-autonomous ‘driverless’ motoring embraced by some carmakers. Allowing drivers to retain ultimate control over their vehicle, the ‘co-pilot’ function of Infiniti’s autonomous drive support technologies empowers and gives confidence to the driver, and ‘delegates’ more onerous driving tasks to the machine. In the QX50, ProPILOT Assist technologies help the driver control acceleration, braking and steering during single-lane highway driving, placing them in total control. ProPILOT Assist is designed to add to driving enjoyment and confidence, and is available at the push of a button.

RECORD CAR SALES RECORD NOVEMBER SALES have kept the Australian motor industry on target for another best-selling year, according to results released by the industry’s statistical service VFACTS. Industry sales rolled past the 1 million mark for the year to date as the November total reached 101,365, a gain of 2.5 per cent on the same month last year. This keeps the industry running at 0.6 per cent ahead of 2016’s record pace. New sales records were posted for seven of the 11 months of 2017. Two light commercial vehicles and five SUVs were among the nation’s top 10 best-selling vehicles in November. Chief Executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Tony Weber, said: “The momentum built in the market over the past few months appears to be continuing so we’re on target for another record year”. Toyota remained the runaway market leader with an 18.6 per cent share of the November sales, followed by Mazda (9.2%), Hyundai (8.7%), Holden (7.8%) and Mitsubishi (6.6%). The Toyota Hilux was Australia’s best-selling vehicle in November with 4,103 sales, followed by the Ford Ranger (3,576), the Toyota Corolla (2,959), Mazda3 (2,464) and the Mazda CX-5 (2,358). www.paintandpanel.com.au

YOUI REFINDS $164,000 TO CUSTOMERS YOUI HAS REFUNDED 102 consumers approximately $14,000 in total, and will pay $150,000 as a community benefit payment to the Financial Rights Legal Centre’s Insurance Law Service, after ASIC raised concerns about its home and car insurance sales practices. Youi has also engaged an independent firm (EY) to conduct a review of sales practices in response to concerns that some sales staff were charging consumers for insurance policies without their consent to purchase. This included where consumers only made an inquiry to get an insurance quote. ASIC was concerned that Youi’s remuneration and bonus structures

incentivised sales staff to prioritise sales ahead of consumers’ interests. Since the review, Youi has: • Changed its remuneration structure and reduced the incentives provided to sales staff based on sales volumes • Reviewed sales scripts and staff training • Introduced new controls and monitoring of sales staff • Made significant changes to its legal, risk and compliance capability. Acting ASIC Chair Peter Kell said positive consumer outcomes should be at the heart of sales structures: “It is completely unacceptable that customers were signed up for Youi insurance policies without their knowledge or permission.”

NEWS IN BRIEF BRADY TAKES TOP SPOT Mark Brady from Mandurah Panel and Paint has been elected to the position Chairman of the Board at Car Craft WA. Brady has been a long time director of the company and takes over from industry stalwart Wayne Phipps who remains on the board as a director.

Brady’s election sees him as only the fourth person to lead the group in the last thirty years. Car Craft General Manager Peter McMahon paid tribute to not only Phipps for his leadership, but also to the board for having the vision to make a succession plan that has made the transition seamless. McMahon said: “It is a testament to the company that in thirty years prior to Mark, there have only been three other people in the chair. I believe Mark will further enhance the groups already strong presence.”

CAR BUYER BLUES Blue is the fastest growing vehicle colour across the planet. Despite white continuing to lead in popularity, the latest PPG automotive colour trends show that blue is on the rise – increasing by three per cent as a preference for luxury, midsize and compact cars in 2016 and continuing the upward trend globally in 2017 with an increase of five per cent for luxury cars. North American consumers prefer their luxury cars finished in blue, whereas in China it is a top choice among mini cars buyers and in Europe blue is most popular on sports cars.

TOW OPERATOR LOSES ARM IN TRAGIC ACCIDENT A TOWING OPERATOR recently had their arm severed in a horror crash near the intersection of Peninsula Link and Frankston Dandenong Road in Melbourne. This may have been avoided if tow truck operators were afforded the same safety rules as emergency and enforcement workers, says VACC. “This terrible accident has left a valuable member of the community disabled forever. VACC wishes this individual, who is known to the Chamber, all the very best under what are extremely challenging circumstances,” said VACC executive director, Geoff Gwilym. From July 1, 2017 a new road rule was introduced to improve safety for government emergency and enforcement workers. VACC supports the law but say there has been a stakeholder engagement oversight by VicRoads that has led to tragic consequences. “Unfortunately, this should never have

happened in the first place. The towing industry performs an important community service and, at times, operators work in similar conditions to emergency and enforcement workers. These conditions are often dangerous, so towing operators should be afforded every protection available, as this terrible accident has highlighted. “VACC calls on VicRoads to immediately amend Rule 79A to include towing operators in what is otherwise very sound policy,” said Gwilym. Rule 79A requires motorists to slow down to a speed that would enable them to stop safely when approaching and passing enforcement, emergency or escort vehicles that are stationary or moving slowly and have either red, blue or purple flashing lights or an alarm sounding. Motorists must not exceed 40km/h and not increase their speed until a safe distance from the scene.

AEB GAINS EUROPEAN BACKING THATCHAM RESEARCH HAS thrown its support behind the European Parliament’s decision to implement mandatory Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) fitment. Thatcham Research’s chief executive Peter Shaw said the decision was a necessary one, emphasising the importance of the technology. “We fully support the European Parliament in its call for standard fitment of key car safety technologies like Autonomous Emergency Braking AEB.

“The imperative now is for the European Commission to publish its proposals and to enshrine it in a binding agreement supported by the UK Government. “Autonomous Emergency Braking can lead to a 38 per cent reduction in real-world, rear-end accidents. But with just 30 per cent of new vehicles currently on sale in the UK having AEB as standard, it seems that only through legislation will we be able to ensure that lifesaving technologies such as AEB or speed adaptation systems will become standard.” www.paintandpanel.com.au

FIX AUTO WILLETON

FIX AUTO CONTINUES to secure growth in Western Australia by joining forces with owneroperator Wayne Russell. Combined Smash Repairs has become Fix Auto Willetton. Russell was aware of the ongoing trend toward consolidation in the Australian automotive aftermarket space. He knew he needed to find the right partner to help drive his business into the future. “I realised that my bodyshop needed to be part of a larger organisation. When I met with the Fix Auto Australia team and saw what the company has achieved globally, it became clear to me that Fix Auto is the leader in this industry.” Russell added that the Fix Auto model was what first attracted him to Fix Auto. “The managed franchise system is preferred by work providers, as it helps deliver predictable consistency by owners who have their own stake in the business.” Fix Auto Australia Head of Business Terry Feehan concluded by saying: “We are delighted to welcome Wayne and his team to Fix Auto. It is a real win for us to grow our network with a reputed partner like Fix Auto Willetton. Collaborating with driven, enthusiastic individuals like Wayne and his team is key in our plans to build the ultimate collision repair solution in Australia. WA CAR CRAFT WELCOMES BUSSELTON BUSSELTON PANEL AND Paint is the latest business to join the Car Craft Group. Owned by husband and wife team Paul and Michelle Horsley (pictured), the couple purpose-built the shop back in 1994. Bussleton is 230km south of Perth, with around 37,000 residents. The facility specialises in insurance repairs for both heavy and light hits. Paul’s reasons for joining Car Craft include future-proofing his business. “I was having the 1Q1 System put in and heard about the benefits of Car Craft from member Paul Smith. There are some good ideas in the group like the Excess Plus Certificate they offer and the better buying power of a group. Our industry is changing so quickly, you need the latest information and that’s easier to come by when lots of people pool their knowledge. I also like the idea of presenting a unified approach with insurance companies as a group with high standards.”

Car Craft Chairman WA Mark Brady said: “We welcome Michelle and Paul to the Car Craft Group. Having such a quality business join us further enhances the group’s growing reputation and presence in the south-west and provides an expanding network for motorists and work providers to access in the area.”

AAPR CONFERENCE REPORT THE AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATION of Progressive Repairers (AAPR) held its annual conference at Eastern Creek in Sydney in November which was opened by Minister Ray Williams MP for Castle Hill. The association is very much about who you know as well as what you know and was set up as a networking and lobbying group. Its members are generally made up of larger repairers and MSOs who have contracts with major insurance companies. The conference began with a networking evening and ran into a morning seminar on the theme of Auto Train 2020. Sessions included an update from Brett Wallace of Suncorp on what was transpiring in the company, a presentation from PwC Skills for Australia, Gary Maher and Rainier Malkki talking about the recently introduced One TAFE system, Mark Cvitkovits on I-CAR and an IAG update from Stephen Palmer. Delegates included repairers, insurance companies and suppliers. PwC’s Philip Le Feuvre announced that Skills For Australia was well advanced in developing a ‘skills set’ for estimating which should be available mid-2018. As a lobbying group AAPR had success this year in September with the Motor Dealers and Repairers amendment for ‘low scope repairs’. The following is an excerpt from AAPR submission supporting this. “The automotive industry continues to suffer from the well documented lack of apprentices and job seekers into this sector but the introduction of Low Scope Repair Work into NSW has the potential ‘to turn a job into a career’ and with that assist in addressing our skills shortage.

AAPR has canvassed its members who would employ new staff, from school leavers to long term unemployed, that could fit the bill to carry out Low Scope type work as another pathway into the automotive repair industry. This would allow these businesses to provide progressive options to these new employees, via a career path, into certified training and ultimately to that of a fully certified automotive repair panel or paint technician. The amendment came in effect on September 29 last year. Minor works or repairs that do not affect the mechanical operation of the vehicle, the structure of the vehicle or vehicle safety features are not repair work. A copy of the Amending Regulation is available on the NSW Legislation website. The increasing levels of vehicle technology was the dominant topic at the seminar. IAG’s recent stipulation that all repairs must have a pre and post scan is supported by AAPR and its partner organisation IAME. However, in NSW and WA, where structural technicians are licenced, they are prohibited from carrying out vehicle scans. The impracticality of this restriction and a lack of willingness to engage from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) was brought up with Minister Williams who immediately rang NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro who insisted the OFT look into the matter. Wheels were in motion by the start of the conference. Peter Blanchard, IAME CEO and Blanchard is confident a skills set as well as brief and in-depth training courses will available in the first quarter of the year. www.paintandpanel.com.au

COOLING IT

VOLKSWAGEN’S ALL OR NOTHING APPROACH TO R744 The manufacturer is facing some controversy with its latest prototype, writes Haitham Razagui of VASA. THE GLOBAL AUTOMOTIVE air-conditioning industry is awash with rumours that Volkswagen has some 2.0-litre Golf prototypes under test with air-con systems using R744 refrigerant (pure carbon dioxide). Word from Volkswagen officials at the Frankfurt motor show in September was that R744 will not see the light of day on any current mainstream vehicle platforms. “We are developing it, I am not sure when or what approach, but I think the only opportunity is to spread it to reduce the cost,” VW technology spokesman Tim Fronzek said at the Frankfurt show. “A complete new family of cars may offer a starting point to integrate a new technology,” he offered. Comparing the approach of VW Group stablemate Audi, Fronzek said a technological trickle-down effect would not work for the mainstream Volkswagen brand. “Audi is doing it differently; they are doing the top-down thing with the A8, they have the 48V [electrical architecture] in there and everything,” said Fronzek. “We have to be very efficient in terms of cost.” At the moment, the majority of VW products are based on the MQB architecture that can be adapted to underpin everything from the Polo light car to the Atlas seven-seat SUV. Just before it made a mainstream debut under the MK7 Golf, MQB was debuted by Audi in 2012 with the A3 and it has since spread to the premium brand’s other compact models including the Q2 and TT, while Skoda and Seat use it for every current-generation model. The sheer economies of scale enabled by such broad platform and technology sharing are obvious and VW seems intent on applying the same to its planned adoption of R744. Fronzek was well versed in the high pressures and associated engineering hurdles when it came to developing R744 systems. “You have to recalibrate all that stuff and it costs lots of money to go to high volumes. That means when we do the change we have to do it with a wide approach to reduce costs.” Volkswagen is currently developing its all-new MEB architecture for electric vehicles, which will first see the light of day in 2019 with a production version of the I.D. concept. VW say the production ID will be as significant as the original Beetle and Golf, will cost around the same as a diesel-powered

16  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

Golf does today and have a 600km battery range. MEB will also spawn at least four other VW brand vehicles, including a resurrected Kombi based on the I.D. Buzz concept and the inevitable SUV previewed by the I.D. Crozz concept. Described as a ‘skateboard’ platform with the battery packs and control electronics sandwiched into the floorpan, MEB is potentially even more flexible than MQB. Without confirming it, Fronzek suggested the ID family would be a fitting recipient for R744. Because there is not yet an import restriction on vehicles with high global warming potential R134a, VW and a number of other carmakers still send cars to Australia filled with R134a. However, when asked if the same scenario would apply to R744, which remains unproven in hot climates, Fronzek thought the cost of the new technology would limit VW’s ability to fit different systems for different markets. “I don’t think we will have two different systems,” he said. “I’m not sure of the technical requirements in the hot climates.” Unlike the situation of vehicles being filled with either R134a or R1234yf depending on regulations in their target market due to the system layouts and components being similar for both refrigerants, the cost of designing and installing airconditioners for completely different refrigerant species may well be beyond the scope of mass-market vehicles. Add to this the fact R744 has advantages as a heat pump refrigerant for electric vehicles and it starts to become clearer why VW is pursuing this path. No doubt the VW 744 plot will thicken further between now and 2019.

BUSINESS STRATEGIES

MAKE THE MOST OF 2018 Business coach Ben Fewtrell, managing partner of MaxMyProfit suggests new year resolutions to make your business fly this year.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING back on last year thinking “Where did that year go? I don’t feel like I achieved anything!” You’re in the majority of business owners that lacked clarity and direction. This can lead to reactive behaviour and short-term thinking, a recipe for disaster in any industry. There is no doubt you’re facing many challenges, Ben Fewtrell and sometimes this can feel like an impossible hill to climb. The good news is, you can make your life a little easier by putting some time aside and working on your business. Here’s 7 New Year’s Resolutions to get you off to a flying start.

1CREATE A BUSINESS PLAN

You have probably heard the saying 'failing to plan is planning to fail', I know it’s an overused saying that will get your eyes rolling, but it’s true to some extent. You may not fail, but I can guarantee without a plan you are less likely to thrive. Planning leads to more clarity, focus and pro-active decision making. It helps you communicate your vision to the team, your customers and suppliers. Before you get worried about how much time this is going to take, you don’t need this to be a complicated, detailed plan. A simple action plan is all you need.

18  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

Think about what you want to achieve this year, and work out what resources you’re going to need to make it happen. Most plans fail because they lack the simple step by step approach. Make sure you keep it simple so it’s easy to implement and adjust as you go.

2BUDGET

A budget is paramount to the success of any business, and should be a part of your plan for 2018. In your budget, start by working out how much profit you want to make for the year, and then work backwards. This will help you set sales targets for each quarter. Don’t fall in to the trap of focusing on just expenses or sales in your budget. Make sure you’re clear about how much money you want to make in 2018, isn’t this why you’re in business?

3KPI’S

Key Performance Indicators will give you the feedback to know whether or not you’re on track, and will help you hold your team accountable. Just like the fuel gauge or speedo in your car, KPI’s need to be something you can monitor on a regular basis. Every team member should also have KPI’s that contribute to your overall goal. KPI’s are a great way to manage a non-performer, rather than speculating about where they fall short, you can use their KPI’s as a tool to help them identify the improvement areas. www.paintandpanel.com.au

MARKETING

FINGER CLICKIN’ GOOD Josh McDonnell shares the top 10 industry Facebook pages you need to follow. FACEBOOK CONTINUES TO be the tool you can’t ignore. Using it as a means of advertising or a channel to directly communicate with your customers is vital. However, what many forget is that there are plenty of other companies out there with pages that can provide your own business with valuable insights, information and stories to share. By simply heading to your company Facebook page and scrolling down the right had side, you will find a link to ‘See Pages Feed’. Here you can select pages to follow. Once you have followed enough pages through your own, you will now see a dedicated feed that is relevant to your business and makes managing your shop's Facebook page a breeze. For this issue we have compiled the top 10 Facebook pages to follow:

1

Insurers Allianz, Suncorp, NRMA, QBE etc. Insurance companies have great social media pages and tend to follow the 80/20 rule - which you should too, that is only 20 percent about me and 80 percent useful and relevant to my followers. Because of this and their considerable resources their posts are a brilliant source for sharing on your Facebook page.

2

Paint companies AkzoNobel, PPG, Glasurit and Axalta all have great facebook pages with videos, news, product and technical information. They also publish many posts about colour and technology that are suitable for sharing with your customer Facebook followers.

3

Lowbake Australia As one of the biggest distributors of spray booths throughout Australia, Lowbake’s Facebook page provides product and technological changes. The page also posts community engagement updates and relevant tips and tricks.

4

Your local MTA facebook page Here you can find all the latest updates on the conversations going on within the industry. The page keeps people up-to-date on the latest political, policy and legal changes within Australia.

5

Suppliers such as Finixa, U-POL, Car-O-Liner, Farecla Great sources of instructional videos, cool gadgets and all the latest product and offers.

6

Safety-related pages ANCAP offers more than posts of car crashes and safety reports. There are great posts about industry conversations in Australia and abroad, with photos and videos to support them. Thatcham Research will offer repair methods right through to stories

20  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

on the impact of driverless cars. There’s plenty of safety information you can repost for your customers’ benefit on your own page. Type in road safety in Facebook and see what else comes up.

7

Vehicle manufacturers Competitions, new models, videos - these can be good for starting a conversation thread by asking customers what they think of the new model.

8

Your competition Why not see what they’re posting and who’s feeds they follow? At least you can measure your page against a similar business and see what posts worked for them.

9

Newspaper and magazine Facebook pages such as Wheels, Motoring Legends of Australia Custom car and classic car pages are also a good source of material for reposts.

10

Know your customers. Ask staff to inquire about customer interests - surfing, fishing, gardening, road trips, etc. Type these into Facebook search and see what Aussie groups there are for these interests and share anything that is motoring related in these subjects or just make them relevant by writing something like ‘we’ll get you back on the road and fishing in no time after an accident’. By finding more pages to follow, you will not only expand on the quality and quantity of industry news and information available, but it can also provide further ideas for your own page. Remember keep it relevant but don’t make it all about you. Constant ‘before and after’ pictures do not an appealling Facebook feed make. Finally be sure to follow the Paint & Panel Facebook page too, we publish many posts which are suitable for reposting to your customers.

WOMEN IN COLLISION

WOMEN IN COLLISION CONNECT AT SYDNEY SEMINAR AND AWARDS From left: Anthony Boddy, IAG; Kate Presnell, Gary Presnell Bodyworks; Joanne Stavris, Gow St Audobody; Lara Anastasi, L&M Smash; Sam Street; Perlita Puruto, Workhorse Collision Repairs; Corinne Verdile, Wayne Phipps Smash Repairs; Stephen Palmer, IAG

2017 Women in Collision award winners and women from the industry across the country had a great day networking with their peers. THE FIRST IAG/PAINT & Panel Women in Collision seminar took place at the IAG Research Centre in Sydney on 17 November. Around 45 people gathered to network and be inspired - and yes, we let men come too, because we're not sexist. The Women in Collision awards, sponsored by IAG, are now in their fourth year. Initially the program was designed to highlight and recognise the pivotal roles that women play in this male-dominated industry. This year IAG wanted to expand the program to also help develop women, encourage networking and include more people than the winner's lunch that has taken place in previous years. Stephen Palmer from IAG said: "IAG recognises diversity in all its forms, and are proud sponsors on the Women in Collision awards. There is no doubt the panel repair industry would be one of the most male dominated areas of work in Australia. So, to be able to play a part in shining a light on the important role women play and, indeed, excel at is a great privilege." The day kicked off with all the women introducing themselves and briefly outlining their roles. Anthony Boddy, manager, motor operations at the IAG Research Centre gave a fascinating presentation about the work the research centre undertakes. After lunch it was time for the keynote speaker Olympic beach volleyball gold medallist Kerri Pottharst. Pottharst took us through her journey to the Gold medal that included a horrific injury and numerous knee surgeries and 22  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

suggested strategies that we can use to realise our dreams and ambitions. Just to prove that we can push through our comfort zones she asked for four volunteers. Pottharst then proceeded to unravel a package which contained a pile of broken glass and each of the volunteers walked over it. The delegates then split into two groups, one to take a tour of the research facility and find what goes on in the workshop, while the others formed groups to discuss how we might attract more women into the industry and the what the blockers are. Suggestions about why women leave the industry included: • Lack of opportunity • No encouragement to grow • Family • Low wages • Harassment • Being treated badly • Sexism from both employers and customers Of course these issues aren't exclusive to women and lead men to leave the industry too. Our groups felt that industry mentoring and networking is vital to encourage women to thrive in the autobody repair industry. We're in the 21st century where so many women are incredibly knowledgeable about cars and the repair process and yet some customers still ask to speak to a man and doubt female capability. www.paintandpanel.com.au

EVENT FEEDBACK

HOW CAN WE ATTRACT MORE WOMEN? How can we attract more women to consider a career in the industry? Many of these suggestions can also be applied to just how we attract more people generally to consider careers in the industry, not just women. More involvement and recognition, more networking with other women in the industry was a top suggestion - a double tick for our seminar day. Other suggestions included: • Flexible working and job sharing • Re-name roles to make them more attractive • Reach out to schools even primary schools • Educate men on women's roles and the benefits they bring to the industry Kerri Pottharst stayed to present our Women in Collision winners with their trophies, a signed copy of her book and an an I-CAR training course voucher. Over 90 women were nominated for this year's Women in Collision awards. To recognise the breadth of roles that women perform in the industry, this year there were three categories - owner/manager, administration and tradesperson/estimator. Last year's winners form the judging panel for this year's winners. www.paintandpanel.com.au

Corinne Verdile, Wayne Phipps Smash Repair WA: “I had a great time at the event. It was a really good opportunity to meet women from shops all over the country and share experiences. It was surprising that even from opposite sides of the country, we had so much in common. I even picked up a few ideas that I could take back to my own workplace.” Zoe Pottage, Capital S.M.A.R.T, VIC: "Amazing, talented women, working together on some strategic initiatives to get more of us into the industry!" Perilta Puruto, Workhorse Collision: "Absolutely wonderful day, so happy to meet all the beautiful, strong women there. Definitely making our companies and families proud. I hope this event can bring some more girls in the trade. I'd like some female work mates please." Editor Sam Street: "Confident, intelligent and knowledgeable describes everyone in the room. It was fantastic to see so much talent but we need more, much more. Women are the linchpin in so many automotive repair businesses, more recognition and empowerment of females in the workforce would continue to raise standards in the industry.” If you are a female working in collision repair – not just in bodyshops but in suppliers too – you are welcome to join our Women in Collision closed facebook (women only please). WOMEN IN COLLISION

PERLITA PURUTO: A MODEL APPRENTICE WINNER TECHNICIAN Puruto of Workhorse Collision Repairs, NSW, is a rare beast a female panel beater, and one that specialises in big trucks. “PERLITA BRINGS AN incredible amount of energy to the business. She is keen and motivated, and works hard to acquire new skills. She continually shows initiative, never standing still, always working. She always has a smile and is genuinely a pleasure to have around. She regularly sets the standard for the rest of the apprentices to live up to.” High praise from Peruto’s Boss Ben Kavich. Peruto initially wanted to be a spray painter but found it difficult to get a placement in a shop until Workhorse Collision took an interest. “Ben Kavich gave me a chance and offered me everything but spray painting. I spoke with my dad, he told me to go for the panel beating and I’ve never looked back.” Puruto says that while she loves the industry, there can always be improvements – having more women in it being one of them. “I’d suggest more ads on TV, influencing diversity. However, women seeing other women in the industry is probably the best way to attract more females to the workforce.”

CORRINE VERDILE: MASTER MULTI-TASKER WINNER ADMINISTRATION Verdile has branched out from front of house to parts ordering and she can turn her hand to plastic welding too. MULTI-TASKER VERDILE LOVES the variety working at Wayne Phipps Smash Repairs in WA afford: “no two jobs or two days are the same. “I process quotes and invoices and now order parts. I also order office supplies and work closely with my manager to communicate vehicle collections and parts availability.” Verdile continues to push herself to gain further industry knowledge. “I have undertaken training in the Audanet system, AutoQuote, Polycom phone system and attended social media training. “I am also a qualified automotive plastic welder. I have completed in-house training, including storeroom management and the principles of estimating and repair. My hands-on background has given me an invaluable insight which allows me to perform my job effectively and efficiently.” Verdile believes having more women in the collision repair industry is vital to its growth and success.

KATE PRESNELL: CHALLENGE LOVER WINNER MANAGEMENT Presnell is manager at the family business Gary Presnell Bodyworks, TAS. She’s young, determined and likes to give back to industry too. PRESNELL’S BACKGROUND IN human resources has been a real advantage taking over the helm at the Launceston facility. She loves being ‘the man in charge’ (that’s who the customers ask for), likes to think outside the box and if full of ideas to improve the industry and encourage the next generation to join the industry. As well as running the business, Presnell actively participates with Skills Tasmania and the TACC and has been a speaker at our Next Generation seminars which she values highly for the networking opportunities and ideas and experiences exchange. Presnell practices what she preaches on training and has undertaken I-Car structual and cycle time courses as well as always looking for channels to improve her industry knowledge and understanding. Like most multi-tasking repair managers Presnell will turn her hand to anything if need be: “From janitor to CEO,” she says. 24  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

WOMEN IN COLLISION JOANNE STAVRIS: THE GREAT ALL-ROUNDER WINNER MANAGEMENT What does manager Joanne Stavris do at Sydney’s Gow Street Autobody Repair Centre? The better question to ask is what doesn’t she do? “I DO EVERYTHING – estimates, invoicing, claims assist, customer service, pick-up and delivery of vehicles, cleaner, accounts, payroll, vehicle detailing, paint prep, counsellor, solicitor, first aid, organising customers special requests with courtesy vehicles, I.T., parts ordering and enquiries, parts check, credits and problem solver,” Stavris said. Stavris was poached by her now husband, she had been working for a company near by to his panel shop. And before Stavris knew it, nearly 10 years had passed. “It is very important for women to be involved in the smash industry. Women and men both offer great value in their own unique ways. We should be coming together as a team and growing rapidly, not only for the business but as people evolving and broadening their knowledge. We can learn a lot from each other to move forward.

LARA ANASTASI: PASSIONATE PAINTER WINNER TECHNICIAN Head Painter at L&M Smash in Sydney, Anastasi is an inspiring woman who loves her craft and is already training and bringing on the next generation of painters. “I LIKE TO think I hold my own with the boys - I’m not a ball buster but they all respect me for what I am and can do. I am a great talker so training the younger techs comes easy. I write and play music which comes in handy when the boss takes us on our ski trips. Life, including work has to be fun,” says Anastasi. L&M Smash was one of the first shops to achieve I-CAR status so Anastasti is always at the top of her game in terms of the latest techniques. “We even did a customer relations course last year that opened my eyes to the customer needs. We do a lot of work for some of the elderly people in local retirement villages which is a lot of fun - there are some great characters.” Anastasi is a great ambassador for women in the industry. She is eloquent about her passion for the trade and for L&M Smash and its crew. Like all of our winners she would like to see more women in the industry as technicians and assessors and in other male dominated industry roles.

BRITTANY HOWCHIN: ALWAYS LEARNING WINNER ADMINISTRATION It was a shame that Howchin from Thompson and Robinson Smash Repairs in Wollongong couldn’t make it to the event. HOWCHIN STARTED OUT as a receptionist at Thomspon and Robinson where as well as taking calls and bookings she hunkered down to invoicing and credits as well. She is now learning to estimate while she continues her administration duties. She now enters the majority of quotes on the shop system and will soon be be solo quoting for customers. Howchin has learned everything on the job and is learning estimating from the boss and head estimator. “I like the constant workflow within the company. There’s always something going on, always something to do and always something new to learn. My team are very knowledgeable within the industry and are great to work with,” she says. Her bubbly personality is a winner with customers and colleagues: “I always put in 150% effort and take pride in my work. I have a strong work ethic and always offer to help other staff members if my own work is done.” 26  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

IS AI A DOUBLEEDGED SWORD? Today’s generation is living through what is arguably the greatest technological revolution in the history of mankind, says Alan Feldberg of UK Bodyshop magazine.

KNOWN AS THE third industrial revolution – the first saw machines replace people in manufacturing about 250 years ago and the second was the development of mass production 100 years ago, inspired by Henry Ford. Our headlong sprint into the digital age is transforming all walks of life. A large part of that is the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI). Although this is still an emerging technology and both its limits and potential remain undefined, no one doubts that it will transform the way we live our lives. Last year alone saw a 300 per cent increase in investment in AI, with some experts predicting that 20 per cent of business content will be written by AI software in two years and as much as 85 per cent of customer service interaction powered by AI bots in 2020.

BRACING FOR IMPACT One industry bracing itself for imminent impact is the insurance industry. A recent report by Accenture, based on a survey of more than 550 insurance executives across 31 countries in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and South America underlined just how committed the sector is to AI. It found that 75 per cent of those questioned expect AI to 28  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

“significantly alter or completely transform” the industry within just three years, while 79 per cent believe it will revolutionise the way they gain information and interact with customers. Here in the UK, Ageas has announced its first AI application, while Aviva has also dipped its toe in the water with Solus, its national network of accident repair centres, which is working with Thatcham Research and Emergent Network Intelligence (ENI) to develop a solution to speed up the repair process. ENI has developed Intelligent Vehicle Inspection (IVI) software which uses state-of-the-art image recognition and analytics data to identify if a vehicle is a write-off or not. Together with its partners, Solus is now looking at ways the software could use the images to automatically produce accurate repair methods and lists of parts required in the repair. This would enable the bodyshop to begin the repair process earlier, while the customer would be able to book the repair in knowing how long it would take and how much it would cost.

CHAT ROOMS A more direct application of AI in insurance though, is in customer service, where chatbots can interact directly with policyholders. In fact, it is already happening. Poland’s first www.paintandpanel.com.au

IN DEPTH

SCANNING THE MARKET With the recent directive from both Holden and IAG to perform pre and post repair scans Rod Maher from TaT (The Automotive Technician) advises on equipment. SO, I HEAR you asking, why do I need a scan tool in my shop? Well, my question to you is how long do you think you can continue on without one? Let’s just go over a few of the vehicle systems that collision-repair professionals should be seriously considering being equipped to work on, diagnose and repair. • Anti-lock and autonomous braking • Vehicle stability and computercontrolled suspension systems • Tyre-pressure monitoring • Electric power steering • Safety-restraint systems • Parking assistance and collisionavoidance systems • Check-engine light, which includes engine and transmission controllers These are just a few of the more common systems that most collision-repairer professionals will eventually need to work on. Most of these systems will bring on a warning light because they are either safety or emissions-related systems. While there are many other systems that could bring on warning lights, manufacturers prefer not to bring one on unless it’s really necessary. Every repair shop’s diagnostic-equipment requirements will always be dependent on its location and clientele. Most regional repair shops typically see less technology in their vehicles than their city counterparts. But as technology evolves and more systems become computer controlled, it’s only a matter of time before all repair shops will need to work with systems that today may be considered high-end luxury equipment.

TRAINING Knowledge of these systems is going to be just as important as the tooling. I occasionally receive diagnostic work from panel shops. Most of the time a simple confirmation that the data is correct, the system is functioning correctly and a clearing of codes are all that is required. But not always. Sometimes examining data and performing repairs, followed up by relearns and resets, are required. Recently I made the mistake of not interrogating a panel shop before starting work and as a result wasted considerable time trying to perform a steeringangle sensor calibration on a vehicle that had not had a wheel alignment. It was my mistake for not asking the right questions but the repairer should have known that a wheel alignment was needed before hand. This demonstrates how important it is to understand the system if you wish to finish the vehicle repair.

WHICH TOOL? Most of the time an expensive diagnostic tool isn’t required if you just need to clear codes, examine some basic data and 30  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

perform some simple resets. And there are many entry-level tools on the market that are capable of accessing brake, steering and powertrain fault codes, live data and even performing some basic functions such as steering-angle sensor relearns. However, while there is nothing wrong with having a cheaper, quick-grab tool for those simple tasks, they tend to be limited in vehicle coverage and depth of functionality. With the proliferation of collision avoidance and early-warning systems, a basic tool will not be sufficient if your business plans to stay valid in the market. Eventually a fully capable diagnostic tool will be the only answer. I believe it will be a necessary piece of equipment in every collision repair shop. On some occasions when the only way to perform a certain task is with factory tooling. Clearly, the high cost of factory tooling would not be feasible for most repair shops unless they specialised in that brand, so the only possible solution would be a trip to the dealership. However, if you do specialise, there are alternatives to purchasing multiple expensive factory tools. In many instances an aftermarket device called a J2534 pass-thru tool can be used. WGBW – SEVEN AND COUNTING...

Danny Buzadzic is an entrepreneurial businessman who, in the last decade, has built up Western General Body Works (WGBW) from a single site to seven repair businesses in Melbourne Metro, Geelong and the Gold Coast. LIKE MANY ENTREPRENEURS, Buzadzic has an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm and he speaks at a million miles an hour. His family, as you might guess from the name, hails from Serbia originally. Panel beating runs in the family - Buzadzic’s grandfather was a panel beater and Danny started out as an apprentice in his uncle’s shop. Even his wife’s family is full of panel beaters. By the time he was 19 he was fully qualified and helping to manage his uncle’s business, quoting and running the tow trucks. When he was 24 he went to work at the Sheen Group for a year, then at Mount Waverly Bodyworks, all the while looking for his own shop. Eventually he became partners with his father-inlaw and within another five years he became sole owner. In 1997 he bought his second shop Geelong Collision and more tow trucks and that went “gangbusters”. He owns seven out of the 25 tow truck licences in Geelong. After that he bought a 34  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

building and created another repair shop in Gordon Avenue, Geelong. Around 2000 Buzadzic bought yet another shop, this one quite petite, in Melbourne in Macintyre Road. WGBW Group also has eight tow truck licences in Melbourne: “I love tow trucks,” Buzadzic says. “They have been a good source of revenue for the shops, meaning we get to touch about 120 cars a month - we have an excellent retention rate and then we also get lots of referrals.” Buzadzic is a proper petrol head with a very sweet tooth for motoring exotica especially those with a prancing horse on the bonnet. But his head will be turned by any number of four wheel beauties from Porsches to muscle cars and he loves his motorbikes too. His passion for prestige cars is reflected in the workshop of the Maribyrnong WGBW headquarters, which while it doesn’t necessarily specialise only in prestige, it has plenty of prestige customers. TECH TALK

KEEPING PACE WITH ADAS Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are a game changer for the collision industry, but especially for auto glazing repairers. Paint and Panel asked the Auto Glass Association (AGA) for an update. AUTHOR ARTHUR C. Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is equivalent to magic”.A first drive of an ADAS equipped vehicle may seem miraculous, when functions like self-parking, traffic-jam assist, fatigue warning, blind spot monitoring, auto braking and lane departure warnings kick in. The proliferation of ADAS vehicles on Australian roads intensifies each year. For the third time in four years, Australia hit a new car sales record in 2016 when 1,178,133 new vehicles were sold, up two per cent from the year before. New vehicles of course mean new ADAS technology. ADAS systems monitor the environment around the vehicle using radar, camera, laser and/or infra-red sensors. With a high calibration happens while driving on the road, following the portion of this technology embedded in the windscreen, it is vehicle manufacturer’s prescribed method and using the correct safe to say these developments have had a massive impact on diagnostic tool. How can the local autoglazier meet the challenges “That doesn’t mean every repairer needs to purchase calibration presented by these systems? What is their role when it comes to equipment, which can cost thousands,” Janssen said. “But it does recalibration? Have their obligations to the customer changed? mean that every responsible repairer, certainly all members of the AGA president Rick Janssen, comments, “While the AGA, will establish an approach to calibration that meets or exceeds repercussions have been gradual, the best practice. understand their responsibilities when it comes to recalibration, especially in terms of insurance liability and the safety functionality of the vehicle. That’s why a set procedure like the Thatcham CoP is so valuable. It can be used as a checklist by autoglaziers, to ensure they’re doing right by their customer, the vehicle manufacturer, the insurer and all road users.” One of the many implications of ADAS is the importance it places on windscreen matching. Fitting the right windscreen to a particular vehicle to guarantee the correct operation of all ADAS functions has become an integral part of the replacement process. AGA board member Nick Street, O’Brien AutoGlass, a supplier of windscreens, comments, “We have seen the evolution of assisted driving technology in Australia accelerating rapidly since late 2014. Our estimates suggest that ADAS figments within the market are doubling each year. “The windscreen now functions as part of the automated driving system,” Street adds. “This responsibility means it’s crucial the products used are of equivalent OE standards, the screen has www.paintandpanel.com.au

high optical quality, and attachments and brackets are all within the required tolerances. Where relevant, windscreen removal and installation methods must incorporate caring for the in-car technology to ensure its safe usage after figment, and the vehicle must be correctly recalibrated with an approved method and device.” In March this year, Mercedes-Benz announced that Australia had been selected as a right-hand-drive testing ground for its ADAS technologies. Janssen comments, “As an international testing ground for ADAS technologies and with year on year growth of new car sales with increasing technological advancements, the Australian AGRR industry is on the brink of major changes. As the peak independent industry association, the AGA is well positioned to help autoglaziers navigate the shifting landscape brought about by ADAS.”

MIRKA DEOS BANISHES THE BLOCKING BLUES

ANYONE WHO HAS to tackle the regular task of levelling body filler or high build primer with a block or speed file will tell you that it is not only pretty boring it is also physically taxing and time consuming. Building on its reputation for innovative thinking, MIRKA Power Tools has developed a ground-breaking solution, called the DEOS – Direct Electric Orbital Sander. It is time to forget any preconceived negative ideas you might have about electric tools – there simply is nothing like the DEOS, says Peter Sadler, MIRKA Business Development Manager Australia and New Zealand. “The new MIRKA DEOS is a complete game changer when it comes levelling body filler and high build primers. It integrates all the advanced features which have made the MIRKA DEROS so popular and combines them with a 70mm X 198mm sanding plate which is ideal for blocking. Apart from all the time and energy it takes, another downside of manual sanding is the inconsistent scratch pattern it generates. In contrast, the 3mm orbit of the

DEOS creates an exceptionally smooth and consistent scratch pattern which, in turn, reduces the amount of primer filler required. “It is MIRKA’s revolutionary electric motor technology which is a real standout feature. The 250W brushless DC motor ensures the DEOS is powerful and very quiet, yet extremely light weight at just 1kg. Being brushless, it is low maintenance because there are no wearing carbon brushes requiring replacement. Thanks to the extremely compact motor design, the DEOS has a very low profile – just 101mm high – which contributes to the excellent ergonomics. It is very comfortable to grip, there is a smooth, easy to operate lever to control the motor speed and a built-in electronic motor brake. There is even an integrated vibration sensor which makes it possible to monitor the vibration level the user is being exposed to via the myMirka app. “Nothing on the market compares to the DEOS. Technicians will find it a beautiful tool to work with, while it also helps significantly reduce fatigue and the potential for repetitive strain injuries. The benefits to collision centre owners are just as substantial. As well as slashing process times, it reduces the repair size and the amount of primer and paint required while leaving happier, more motivated technicians. At a stroke, the MIRKA DEOS has accelerated the blocking process into a whole new era where the advantages are simply too good to ignore.”

FEATURES AND BENEFITS: • Powerful and quiet 250W brushless electric motor • Extremely light weight (1kg), low profile design (101mm high) • Reduces user fatigue • 70mm X 198mm sanding plate fits existing abrasives range • Exceptionally smooth, consistent scratch pattern • Low maintenance and long lifespan

FAST SAFE SANDING WITH FESTOOL FESTOOL HELPS PROTECT your investment and the health of employees in automotive bodyshops with it random orbit sander ETS EC 150. The combination of a compact design with clever ergonomics and intelligent functions make the ETS unbeatable in the world of sanding. It is already clear from initial contact with the sander that everything fits. Its compact design is particularly noticeable when sanding smaller areas, edges or narrow strips at the body. Thanks to the high-performance EC-TEC motor technology, the one-handed sander is smaller, lighter and more compact than sanders with carbon brush motors. With its brushless motor, the ETS EC is extremely robust and wear-free and saves the annoying replacement of carbon brushes. This makes the sander particularly durable, ensures fewer work interruptions and also protects the investment of the paint shop. Festool offers the ETS EC in two model versions with different strokes and sanding pads for various applications.

HEALTH PROTECTION WITH ‘INTELLIGENT ASSISTANCE’ With the “Intelligent Assistance” functions, paint shop employees can carry out sanding in a safer, more health-friendly environment. The ETS achieves optimal smooth running through ideal balancing in combination with the FUSION-TEC sanding pad. Even if the vibration values become too high during an application, the ‘Vibration Control System’ actively intervenes to reduce this. This protects the user, because the risk of damage to the muscular and “This protects the user, skeletal system is reduced and because the risk of damage circulatory disorders are to the muscular and skeletal avoided where possible. Thanks to the sanding pad brake, system is reduced and uncontrolled start-up of the pad circulatory disorders are is avoided. This safety aspect ultimately serves to protect the tool and the safety of the employee. With the world’s first extractor signal, Festool ensures health-friendly work, because it reminds the user to always work with a dust extractor. If the extractor signal is active, the ETS only starts when a suction hose is connected. A robust protective covering covers the suction hose and allows it to glide over surfaces without causing any damage. The hose is also anti-static and guides the integrated plug-it cable within the protective covering for a quick tool change. To enable the paint shop worker to fully concentrate on his work, Festool has a range of dust extractors that will work seamlessly with the sanders, helping to achieve fast, dust-free and premium quality surface results. www.paintandpanel.com.au

NORTON’S ABRASIVE SOLUTION NORTON OFFERS A complete single brand abrasive solution for all automotive repair and refinishing applications. Utilising the global R&D resources of Saint-Gobain, Norton continues to develop market leading abrasives for improved finishes requiring less labour – improving the bottom line. For heavy sanding, Norton developed an exclusive polyesterreinforced D-weight paper backing that provides two to three times more tear resistance beyond other flexible papers in the market. This backing provides the added strength for exceptional edge adhesion with grain shedding virtually non-existent, even in the most demanding automotive sanding applications. A strong backing is the ideal foundation for coating with the ultra-premium Blaze ceramic grain. The super sharp grain is able

40  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

to produce a faster more consistent cut throughout the life of the product. When combined with the water-based No-Fil (anti-clog) stearate coating users get a superior finish without user-fatigue, rework, or constant disc changes. With these finest elements in place, the vacuum-hole design is added for maximum dust extraction. The multi-air cyclonic technology optimises an ingenious spiral-hole vacuum configuration, in conjunction with a specialised cutting process. Unlike die-punched designs that cause deformation at the hole where material can collect to reduce cut and the ability to extract dust, Norton’s precision laser-cut holes are true and flat and aid in directing dust into the holes to reduce airborne contamination - critical for thinner waterborne coatings. This unique Norton multi-hole pattern fits any random orbital vacuum-hole configuration without the need to align the holes to the backup pad for faster disc changes. Testing has shown Blaze Multi-Air Cyclonic discs to remove over 30 per cent more material with considerably less dust. For the perfect finish, Norton Liquid Ice polishing compounds and detailing spray will reduce the number of polishing steps. The environmentally friendly, water-based Liquid Ice range contains no silicon and is contamination-free for the perfect finish. With the option of single, or dual step processes dependant on the colour, a swirl-free finish is achieved, with reduced polishing and buffing time. The ultimate finish is achieved using Liquid Ice Detail Spray, which cleans up excess buffing residue and provides excellent paint protection. www.paintandpanel.com.au

DRYING

CURING REVOLUTION

ANYTHING LESS THAN efficient, quality built equipment won’t cut it in today’s market. Cutting drying time and the energy costs associated with it is a sure way to increase cycle times and therefore business profits - Fixia’s UV-LED curing system slashes both. Ultraviolet (UV) curing is one of the fastest and most efficient methods in the paint and coating industry today. UV cure coating is increasingly being used as an alternative to conventional high heat curing to create coatings with improved physical and chemical properties, cut overall costs of coating processes as well as reducing the environmental impact that curing creates. The ultraviolet light spectrum generated by a UV lamp interacts with special coating chemistries to produce a highquality, durable coating. In many applications, UV curing can achieve the coating faster, and therefore at a lower total cost than many other coating processes. UV curing systems hold many unique benefits: • Large, uniform curing area • High intensity curing with optimised process control • Up to 70% lower energy usage with no warm-up times • Very long lifetime with no replacement costs • Easy set-up and use with a compact design to store easily. Also, the unit does not get hot so is workplace safety is improved • Low energy usage means a lower carbon footprint, no disposal of used lamps containing mercury leaves no hazardous material in the workshop More information from Finixa on: (02) 8036 8210 or visit www.bodylineimports.com.au

BUSINESS CONTROL WITH CARBEAT AkzoNobel has launched Carbeat a cloud-based application that has been designed to benefit both independent and multi-site operations. This intuitive and user-friendly digital process control solution will improve communication and efficiencies throughout the entire bodyshop value stream. It’s been developed with thorough understanding of the challenges that bodyshop owners face on a daily basis: complex vehicle technology, challenging consumer demands and the constant need to satisfy insurance partner expectations. Deployed on a king size 70 inch touch screen monitor at the shop floor where the first point of contact and interaction is via the technicians. It is a very intuitive and practical system that displays vehicle status within production stages represented by columns and fully customizable configuration represented by colour coding that can be repositioned or updated with just the swipe of a finger. Carbeat connects all the data points required to accommodate a seamless ‘real time’ production flow with full visibility to multiple departments. All of Carbeat’s live activities of vehicle status and movement that are captured at the source also provide data to managers and business owners as a set of unique leading indicators that enable informed operational decisions to be made without mining through multiple analytics and reports. Carbeat has been trialled and tested with outstanding

performance in bodyshops throughout Europe and Australasia, and is already benefiting their owners by empowering and engaging staff at all levels. Carbeat is exclusively available to AkzoNobel customers and is currently being adopted by a group of users throughout the Acoat Selected Australasia Network, with extended access and rollout planned for early 2018.

PARTS CHECK V2

CRASH COURSE

CAVEAT EMPTOR OR WATCH OUT BUYERS Surely knowing if a car has been in a crash and if so who repaired it and with what parts is as important as the service history to second-hand car buyers? A NUMBER OF things happened and were said the last time I went out to check the condition of a used car that confirmed a belief I’ve held for a while. It is that a car’s service and repairs history needs to be recorded or logged and easily accessed by interested parties. This would include both the fields of mechanical and smash. This concept, which should be mandatory by the way, is more crucial now than in the past when you consider that even quite humble new cars like a Volkswagen Golf for example, are particularly specialised in their construction and fitted with sophisticated safety systems. That said, it would also bring the parties involved in car’s servicing and repairs (yes, insurance companies including you!) into account for their work. An example of how this concept might have been of benefit occurred when a doctor acquaintance enlisted my help to check over a private sale, late model, prestige car. At just under $80,000 it looked to be good buying with a substantial saving over its new price – something this bargain hunting doctor delighted in. From a distance, the car’s striking shape and colour, and the fact that it had been beautifully detailed, had the potential purchaser salivating. An added bonus was an up to date service logbook with the dealer’s invoices supplied. Doc was on the verge of euphoria! Closer inspection brought Doc quickly back to earth. There was evidence of less than satisfactory repairs and paint to the front bar and near side front door. Colour match with inconsistent metallic finish when compared to neighbouring panels, rubbing marks and poor panel gapping were just the start of the issues. These were followed by inconsistent operation of the passenger side mirror and door handle when compared to the undamaged side. They were not huge issues by any means, but definitely not the quality of work one would expect on such a car. This below par workmanship also didn’t instil a lot of confidence in what was of greater concern – the sensors in the front bar and grille. Of course, we weren’t in a position to test their operation. All this was enough to have Doc put away his wallet and make the vendor, aghast that he hadn’t noticed the issues, incensed with his insurance company. The vendor, went on to explain that a few months prior his wife scraped the passenger’s door on one carpark pillar and the www.paintandpanel.com.au

front bar on the opposite pillar as she was reversing out between them. Within 24 hours of lodging the claim, his pride and joy was taken away from his driveway on a flatbed truck to be repaired. Quizzed by Doc as to who repaired the car and what was done to it, the vendor replied, “I’ve got no idea. The insurance company said they’d handle everything and assured me that I had nothing to worry about as they’d give me a lifetime warranty.” The rest of his reply is unprintable. So, there we all were looking at a car and able to check its mechanical service history easily and on the spot, yet unable to verify anything about a recent smash repair with a potential safety issue. Go figure! Later that day I came across a press release in which the contents put the concept and value of a smash repair log into perspective. It read: “The body Porsche’s engineers built on the platform is a multi-material masterpiece, combining aluminium extrusions, castings and stampings with hot- and coldpressed steels. Holding it all together are 6800 joins, made using punch rivets, screws, clinches, crimps, roll-hemming, adhesives and eight different types of weld.” Anyone owning or thinking of purchasing a car built with such complex body engineering that was repaired after a smash should be able to verify that the integrity of the car was intact. This would naturally begin with a record of who repaired it, then what parts and their source were used. In addition, some sort of certification indicating that factory repair procedures were followed and finally that the sensors and or cameras had been tested and calibrated. Whilst some manufacturer-backed repairers are able to link parts supplied and repairs to a car’s VIN number, this information isn’t always freely available or accessible. Indeed, the overall lack of transparency regarding repair information within the industry has allowed some to get away with dodgy practices. It’s well known that used car valuers, wholesalers and buyers make a fuss about a vehicle’s logbook service history. So, it is perplexing why a smash repair logbook supplied by the manufacturer, would not be of equal or greater value especially considering the complexity of cars and repercussions on safety of a poor repair. Certainly then, the feasibility of such a logbook and the subsequent collaboration between the car manufacturers and the smash repair industry should be worthy of debate. THIS PAINT JOB GOT THE ASS A DONKEY IN Germany has landed its owner in hot water after the animal mistook an orange coloured McLaren for a carrot. Vitus the donkey managed to cause upwards of $35,000 in damages after munching down on the $300,000 sports car. Markus Zahn left his car parked next to Vitus’ paddock last year, upon returning to his vehicle he noticed the animal nibbling on his fender. “I looked into the rear-view mirror and suddenly saw a pair of fluffy ears! And then I heard a strange sound. “The sound came from a donkey, who was gnawing at my fender. The donkey probably thought the car was a carrot on wheels. I’m not mad at him,” he told German newspaper Bild. Unfortunately for Vitus’ owner, he ended up in court as part of a trail to determine who was responsible for damages. Even though the McLaren dealer footed most of the repair bill, a remaining $7,000 was charged to the donkey owner after Zahn’s insurer refused to pay the remaining costs. 50  PAINT&PANEL  January / February 2018

When it comes to replacement parts, it’s easy to think air and oil filters are all pretty much the same. Nothing could be further from the truth. Counterfeit filters often have ill-fitting seals and thinner filter papers which easily tear and clog – exposing the engine to damage from dirt and pollutants. Why expose your business to potential mechanical catastrophes when fitting genuine simply eliminates that problem? Buy Toyota Genuine Parts – only from authorised Toyota dealers.
