Ă˜KENDE Josh Rowe and Annie Stanford opened up on Gordon Road in West Bridgford in late October 2018. The word [Ă˜kende] means [increasing] in Norwegian and was chosen both to be partially reflective of the overall design and ethos of the brand, but also as it is something slightly different that hopefully stands out on the high street. Annie Stanford Director • British • United Kingdom • Born in Nov 1992 Self Employed 11 May 2018 – Active Mr Joshua Peter Rowe Director • British • England • Born in Jan 1998 Barista 1 Jul 2018 – Active With a background in speciality coffee, Josh had always wanted to open a coffee shop, and with Annie having a background in design ( she also owns NAMOKI – an online shop that sells beautifully minimal homeware items handmade from independent designers across the UK ) they decided to form a business partnership to enable them to bring each of their own areas of expertise and knowledge together to create a stronger brand and business.
Annie told us: ‘A lot of thought has gone into all elements of the design as we wanted to create a space that enhances a whole overall experience for customers when they come in – from the minimal interiors to the music and the quality of the products we serve. It’s a calming, relaxed environment with Josh and myself being at the core of that.’ With regard to the interiors we wanted the space to be as open as possible to encourage conversation between ourselves and customers.
‘For those wanting to explore coffee further we offer a few contrasting coffees available as pour overs – this is essentially a filter coffee, hand brewed and made to order – which enhances the natural flavours of the coffee, determined by its origin, varietal and process.’ ‘We don’t want anyone to feel intimidated or put off by the fact that it is ‘speciality’ coffee, we just want everyone to have a lovely experience and a delicious cup of coffee ( or tea! )’ Food-wise ØKENDE has collaborated with Nottingham’s Tough Mary’s to offer two exclusive pastries – a Cardamom Bun and a ‘Tebirke’ (a Danish poppy seed pastry with layers of vanilla butter) alongside a selection of cakes from the bakery.
There’s a small brunch menu focused on the best seasonal produce and a selection of open sandwiches. • Coffee with a Q-grade above 80 (the international way coffee is scored) • It is all traceable back to the producer and its origin • It is all delicately and lightly roasted to enhance the natural properties of the coffee itself In real terms, this produces a tastier coffee that is naturally sweet and fruity.
‘With regard to the interiors we wanted the space to be as open as possible to encourage conversation between ourselves and customers and this was one of the main reasons we chose the MAVAM coffee machine. As a result, it has been one of the most valuable and rewarding aspects of the business so far in terms of the relationships and even friendships that we have formed with many of our customers.’ The principal coffee supplier is Denmark-based roaster La Cabra, one of the leading roasters in the world with their approach to modern speciality coffee with seasonal lots, sourced and roasted to enhance the naturally sweet and delicate flavours of the coffee. They also rotate in other guest roasters from both the UK and further afield showcasing how much great speciality coffee there is on offer.
In the next few months ØKENDE hopes to expand with outside seating to coincide with further development and expansion of the food menu. Annie added: ‘We’ll also be introducing seasonal supper clubs – one every Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. These will be an intimate gathering for approximately 16 guests and will consist of a beautiful dinner focused on seasonal produce with wine pairing.’ Alongside this, they are currently in the process of preparing to launch a coffee subscription service this Spring, where customers will be able to sign up to receive a monthly selection of coffees from a variety of some of the best roasters across the world. They will also continue to host regular cuppings ( coffee tastings ), often led by select roasters they work with, and these are always open to the public and anyone who is interested in learning more about coffee and where it comes from. They’ll next be joined by a member of the team from La Cabra toward the end of March, for which event details will be announced on social media soon.
"It's more than a coffee shop. It's very personable. Josh and myself are always here and we always want to chat. It's a really nice overall experience," said Annie.

One of the few in the UK, the Mavam under the counter espresso machine ties in perfectly with Ă˜kende's philosophy. "I think it's safe to say it's been one of our most valuable investments," said Annie. "Rather than having a big boiler on the counter, it's underneath. Customers can watch their coffee being made and have a conversation over the top of it," added Josh. C
Here the emphasis is on superb-tasting coffee, conversation and 'chilling' - which is certainly helped by the serenity of the Scandi/ Japanese inspired setting's unfussy decoration and seating - which will expand onto the pavement for alfresco coffee breaks when the weather improves.

NOVA PETS
The project start with an idea of creating a new type of pet store, a place where people could really social with their pets, one could order two separate meals or drinks for one and one’s pet, also could just chat and drink coffee with friends while waiting for pet bathing if one want to. Say architects have two cats and one dog, we like everything relate to pets, therefore the project proceed quite smooth.
Light and action, wuxi In Yanling Road, there are many complicated and colorful shops, and the “light and function” is based on the silent “white”, and it is also the performance of the store. The sleek and sleek presentation meets the owner’s brand appeal. This is a studio dedicated to the design of lighting research, and the “ambition” of the manager is not limited to this. He hopes that “light and function”,will be similar to the space of museums, galleries, and art galleries. It can enhance self-aesthesia and broaden the horizon. It is a place where people can calmly contemplate.

Light as material - Spain Valleaceron chapel/s-m.a.o. The idea of situating and relating a series of objects in the landscape- Dwelling, Chapel, Hunting pavilion and Guard Ě s residence- gave the project a dual significance: in addition to the close relationship between landscape, objects and itinerary –between space and objects-, each item had to provide a different response with different emphasis, from the most symbolic to the most silent or private. The unifying thread was to be the concept of the fold: the fold as a hidden generator of different spaces.

At the ages of 22 (Mitch) and 19 (Ellen), many may think that the couple are naive and clueless to how to run a business but this would be wrong to assume.
Effy One of the newest coffee shops to grace the Nottingham scene, Effy is a real winner for anyone who loves to combine their coffee with dreamy, Instagram-worthy aesthetics. Pink tones, dalmation print, plants and neon signs, it’s a real winning combination. Effy is open Tuesday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, and Saturdays 9.30am to 4.30pm.
The walls, bench cushions, tiled counter and ceramic cups are candy floss pink, while the black and white spotty Dalmatian wallpaper adds a quirky touch to the shop in Hounds Gate. Inspiration for the style came via photos on Instagram and Pinterest, where some of the hottest coffee shops from London to LA are leading the way in pink aethestics.

Bean by the River is located on the South Side of the embankment just next to the old band stand opposite the Suspension Bridge where you can cross over the River Trent from the Meadows to West Bridgford and vice versa. I had been looking at this prime space for ages thinking it could make a great cafĂŠ with its location by the bridge and the river, so I was delighted when it opened up on a 7 day basis as a coffee shop. I read a lovely article about it in the local West Bridgford Wire (they are reaching over the river a little bit đ&#x;™‚ having said that I look at the shop across the Trent from my window, so I guess we both are reaching)
