Michael Craig-Martin

I got these images from a book callled Michael Craig-Martin, i found them useful as they gave me a idea for a typeface. they are simple images that overlap.

Born in Dublin in 1941 and educated in the United States, where he studied at Yale University. He returned to Europe in the mid-1960s and was a key figure in the first generation of British conceptual artists. As a tutor at Goldsmith’s College from 19741988 and 1994-2000, he had a significant influence on two generations of young British artists.

For this artist i used illustator to show some examples of fonts and show where i got my inpiration from. i liked how the artists work overlapped but stayed very simple and clear, so i used this method and came up with these simple ideas. the first one i did was a very simple, two letters over lapping. The second image was pretty much came but i used a different shade for the letter ‘ C ‘. The reason for this was to make it clear and aslo i used letters that worked together. My final example came to me wheb i started looking at the images a lot more and this triangle shape at the end of the letter came to me. a simple letter but it doesnt end where its supposed


Nathan Cohen These are some of my favourit pieces of his work. I found them very intresting as they all overlap and has odd shapes, which work with mainly three colours from this i got a few ideas which i could use to make a typeface

London-born artist, Nathan Cohen, examines optical and cerebral interaction. His work is inspired by a wide range of architecture and crafts, including Japanese tea houses, colourful Navajo Indian rugs, the pottery of the American South West and Italian mosaics. These seemingly disparate influences are united by a common theme: each uses precise lines and dynamic interaction between shape and space to both emotionally and visually engage the viewer.

I have started my experimenttion by using one of Nathan Cohens work and transforming it into a letter. once that was complete i used that letter and as inspiration for some funky typefaces. when i looked at his work i realised that he has a lot of share edges, crossing lines and shapes invovled. funky typefaces


Hassan Massoudy i found Hassan massoudy work very unique and it really caught my attention. the curves and fine detail looks very unique and i think this would be some good inspiration to try transform into a typeface

Hassan was born in 1944 in Najef, South of Iraq. He grew up amid the scalding heat of the desert, in a traditional Iraqi society characterised by strong religious beliefs, a high sense of solidarity and a keenness for festive gatherings. As youngster, in this town where all images were prohibited, he fulfilled his passion for art by making drawings and calligraphies while investing all his energy to get paper and pigments.

I have started my experimentation using Hassan’s work as inspiration. I start off by choosing a few letters and drawing them up in pencil. The reason I did it in pencil is because he has very thin strokes that come off the page which, in attention. I want to do this but apply it it in a typeface, and I’m not too good with a paint brush so penchil will be so much better. after doing a few little sketches I realise that this typeface has some length and I could develop it more but I would need to do more experimentation.


Frank Stella When looking at Frank Stella’s wokr, i straightaway realised i could create some intresting type faces. i like how the work has a lot of simple shpes and dull colours. From the shapes, type was easy to create and also the colours could make some intresting results

Frank Stella (American, b.1936) is a painter and printmaker who was born in Malden, MA. He attended high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, and went on to study history at Princeton University. After he graduated in 1958, the artist moved to New York, NY. In 1958, Stella was inspired by the geometric stripes and rings in Jasper Johns’ first solo exhibition. The next year, his own paintings were included in 16 Americans at the Museum of Modern Art, and, in 1960, Stella had his first New York solo exhibition at the Leo

From the work above i created these three samples of type faces. All i did was experiment in photoshop with them, then i live traced the letter ‘B’ to see what the outcome would be


Christo and Jeanne-Claude Christo born, Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, June 13, 1935. Jeanne-Claude, Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, June 13, 1935 – November 18, 2009. They were a married couple who created environmental works of art. Christo Yavacheff is Bulgarian born and Jeanne-Claude was born in Morocco. Their works include the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin and the Pont-Neuf bridge in Paris, the 24-mile (39 km)-long artwork called Running Fence in Sonoma and Marin counties in California, and The Gates in New York City’s Central Park.

christo and jeanne-Claude use a very different style when doing art. they use a lot of verticl lines which give that different effect that you can see. From looking throught their work i realised this can inspire me to try this when creating some sort of a typeface. by adding in this effect it will be soemthig different and new.

After looking at Christo’s work, a lot of ideas came into my head so I knew with this sort of inspiration can do a lot of ideas out of it. what I did was draw letters using Loads of lines as the first idea. then put these drawings into for a shop and its experimentation. This is still my first idea


Guy Mckinley He is a freelance illustrator/concept artist/painter who has, since graduating in 2003, been involved in lots of diverse projects relying on his strong character work. He initially began (and continue) producing hand drawn & digital work used in editorials, pre-production concepts, character design and more commercial images for promotional and advertising campaigns, but more recently he has also been taking part in live exhibitions & gallery shows with his more personal paintings and illustrative work.

Using Guy Mckinley’s as my inspiration i decided to go for a simple style like this. I started by sketching some sykes out that came into my head when looking at his work then, using photoshop to experiment

Guy Mckinley has some very detailed illusttions and very fine drawings. the work is very strong and give off a stong vibe. When looking through the work i found some trypography which he did, i though it ws very urbany and different. His typography is very detailed and also again has a strong vibe to it. This is very different compred to the other artists i looked at so this will be good for experimentation.


Nigel Tomm

The style Nigel uses is very different and i havent seen anything like this so far. It loks pretty simple but also its effective. The way the creses destroy the image however its still easy to make out what the image is all about

Always a cult photographer, Nigel Tomm is a reckless hard-experimenting genius who combines new ideas, new standards and new photography concepts to create the unique photo-experience.

I went for a similar style but i used newspaper insted. i cut out a few letters and scanned them into Photoshop to see what i could get out of them


Yulia Brodskaya an artist and illustrator born in 1983 in Moscow - Russia. She is very recognized for her astonishing, elegant and detailed paper illustrations. Currently based in the UK, where she went to continue her education in art at the University of Hertfordshire with a Master of Art in Graphics Communication degree in 2006. After getting her degree, Yulia continued to experiment and explore ways of bringing together all the things she likes most: typography, paper, and highly detailed hand-made craft objects. She has swiftly earned an international reputation for her innovative paper illustrations and continues to create beautifully detailed paper designs for clients all around the world.

the reason i picked this artist was beacuse i was amazed at the detail and quality of the work. i haven never seen anything like this before and realised its a very hard skill however it looks amazing. The colours and style she goes for is very different but unique

this is the first designs i have come up with using this artist as my inspiration. i liked how she has a lot of swirls so i applied this in a little sketch then used illustator to live trace it. live trace helped to perfect the lines and make them stand out a lot more


Julian House Julian House is perhaps best known for his sleeve designs for Primal Scream, Stereolab and Broadcast. A member of influential design firm Intro, House has carved out a niche for himself with his idiosnyratic graphic style. House was “enlisted at Intro after impressing them with a portfolio of college work and freelance designs for the group Broadcast” (BBC Collective). Working primarily on ‘music industry projects and art gallery identities’, House’s sleeves fuse retro images with rough computer edits.

How i got this style was basically i got some inc and water. using a paint brush i dipped it into the water and wrote a few letters. Then i got the inc in dripper and dripped it where i wrote the letters in water. The inc followed the letters and this was the outcome

The next stage Out of the 8 artists whihc i chose to research and sample, i had to narrow my list down to three artist which i wanted to take further and go into more depth with. From the three i pick i will have to try create a typeface with. After this stage i will pick my final one and take that even more Further and create my final font.


My three artist which i am going to take further are: •Nigel Tomm •Guy Mickinly •Christo and jeanne-claude Looking at my artist which i have choosen i realised there all very different in there styles. This is good as i can go into three different roots which shows a wide rage of experimentation with different materials


Typeface

I cut the whole alphabet out like this and scanned them in. After this stage I cropped round the parts that I wanted to keep and take further . I used a craf knife to cut out the letter and picked a page at random, the reson for this is beacuse then the whole font is unique

This type started from these first cutouts. From this stage I realised there was some length with this type and started some experimentation. I liked how the writing on the newspaper gave the letter its own style and also that was what made the font look different to other fonts. writing on a letter, thats something very different.

This is the style I went for in the end. After the experimentation I used the ‘Threshhole’ tool and this was the outcome. i wanted to keep the writing on the letters as this is what makes it unique . The white lettering has black inside it which gives it a effect and for the black lettering it has white writing in it.


This is the ‘News print’ font which i created using Nigel Tomm as my inspiration. Started off by just experimenting with newspaper and from that i came up with the very different, unique font.

Important to show the typeface working in a sentace. So i used this sentace as it contains every letter and shows how they would work together


Typeface

These are some of the outcomes i got from my first inital designs. The difference between this and the other image is that i started getting rid of the white areas.

This is my first inital sketches which i took forward. These ideas came into my head after looking at Guy Mckinley’s work. I wanted to keep it simple and effective, so i realised i can only do this by using some photoshop effects, so thats what i went for. I did more experimentation on Photoshop and liked this style better. The fuzzy effect worked nicely with the swirls. The two images below are how the typeface looks in Photoshop

I liked this white effect that i added in but then realised how it wont work on a white background. The little black strokes on the lette ‘S’ came from the image on the left, the eye strokes


This is the final outcome of my experimentation on the ‘shadow font’ I showed how the font started off and the final outcome, i like the effect of this font however this isnt my strongest typeface.

I drew this font in my sketchbook first then scanned it into photoshop. After i did that, i used phtotshop to create this effect and added in the shadow. I also did a sample how they look in colour.


I have showed how my font works in a sentance. This sentance involves every letter so i knew this would show how the letters would work together. It doesnt work as well as i though, and i think this font needs a lot more work. The shadow is to thick around the font


Typeface

Christo works a lot with fabric so i got some letters cut out and started wrapping them with fabric. Leaving off with of fabric to see what sort of outcome i can comeout with.

This letter i wrapped differently as part od my experimentation. i did this several times.

After all the experimentation i started developing my ideas on photoshop.

These are some of my first ideas that i came up with after looking at Christo and JeanneClaude

two images of the letters i cut out and wrapped with string. I got some very unique outcomes from playing about with the string

What i did was play around with the colour balance and colour adjust

i have showed my full font on this page, also showed it working in a sentace which contains every letter. I have howed it working in three different sizes and in a sample of how it would look in colour



When i started creating ‘Sow Font’ i started with this wood and string idea. I wrapped the letter with string in many ways to see what sort of outcome i would get. Eachtime i scanned them in and carried on experimenting.



I also used fabric as the artist i was inspired by did a lot of wrapping and playing with fabrics, i knew from this sort of experimentation i will get some very good outcomes.


After scanning in the wood and string experiments, i started doing eperimentation on Photoshop. From this i took forward one style, these are some of my best results

I created this poster which uses my font. ‘Sow Font’ which is ‘string on wood’. I used blue so this shows how my font works on a coloured background. At the bottom i wrote how and what my font is, the reason i did this in white is beacuse it stands out a lot more are it advertists the typeface.

The font made from string on wood Inspired by Christo and Jeanna-claude. A unique, detailed typeface that has been created from two simple objects.


This is a poster which shows my type working with different colour backgrounds. I did this beacuse its important to show that this font doesn’t have limited colours that it can work with.


These are the typecases i used on the front bureau. I looked at the existing one and used the same layout for mine.


This is the existing Font Bureau cover, i got my idea from looking at this and learnt how mine should look. For my cover i will add my type name ‘SOW FONT’ and also in the backgroud i will add one of my letters. however i wont just throw it in, i will make it and use it as a background design and not a letter
