The ring road as structural axis – The initial aim that framed the project was the conversion of Ronda de Dalt and Ronda Litoral, borderline Barcelona main roads, into a public transport corridor. The main purpose was to reutilize part of the existing infrastructure, in order to define two lanes, one in each direction, for Rapid Transit Buses (BRT) around the city. The functional change coerced the creation of new intermodal transport stations. Because of its complex and negligence situation, we would decide detail Can Boixeres area. Can Boixeres- Nobody’s land The site becomes a new structured and renaturalized field with public facilities integrated into a metropolitan park. (1) A new street is traced from east to west above the L5 metro lin (2) New routes connect with the city main axes and the existing and proposed public amenities. (3) Existing facilities (4) The new buildings are built on the infrastructure and compose an urban continuity. (5) Ground conditioning and restructuring of the accessibility. (6) Renaturation of the area to create a new environmental connector. (7) Wire shape organization as a landscape sequence. (8) The project promotes mobility on foot and public transport (new intermodality BRT + L5 metro line+ interurban Bus lines). In addition, it generates a green space appealing of multiple activities that brings together the adjacent municipalities.

A . USE S A ND F LO WS

The huge height level difference between the coverage and the park T is overcomed through the building. It C A serves as a height interchanger attached to the infrastructure. Moreover, it also creates a façade to the proposed elevated street and access to the IVIENDA subway station from both parks. The uses are distinguished by floor levels regarding their privacy needs.

B.T O WER FAÇADES Due to the modular character of the dwellings façade an unitized panel system of double height was chosen responding to the big and regular dimensions of the building. In addition, the metallic structure of the panels as well as the industrial finishing of the elements used in their configuration (aluminum mesh as solar protection, exposed sandwich panels...) relates the final image of the project to the history of the area .

Both projects are located in Poblenou, an old industrial and fishing neighbourhood placed in Barcelona coastline. Known as the catalan Manchester, this area has always protected its industrial heritage and traditional archtecture. Despite this and due to its uniqueness , gentrification has changed its social structure.

For that reason, the studio researched the current residential units and housing conditions and explored new residential typologies. On the other hand, these inquiries stirred up a rethinking of the Barcelona tourism model. Consequently, the project not only aims to define the form and aesthetics, but also considers the social effects in the neighbourhood and the city.

POBLE NOU

SYMBIOSIS

ETSAB Instructors: Josep Bohigas The allocated plot is characterized by its undefined and mixed structure. The block contains old factories, fisher houses, little ateliers and 19th century buildings. Because of its prior Cerdá urban shape, the area cut off the north-south direct connection with the coast line metropolitan highway. Having in mind these two inputs, we determined how the new buildings could interact with the old ones and measured the patrimonial value of those. Moreover, the project restructured the middle scale traffic system of the area. Recognising these aims we grounded five action points: - Keep most of the old buildings. - Build to consolidate them. - Open Llacuna Street because of its strategic position. - Sew the different fabric of our area with a lineal building. - Redefine the public space around with it.

Located in the south east neighbourhood of El Poblenou the project focused on the creation of a housing building and the rehabilitation of an existing complex of the 50’s. The district was considered a marginal area until the 80’s, when the city Olympic ambitions replanned all the coast line. Therefore, the locality was promoted as a touristic attraction. Because of that, the aim of the project was to create a connexion between the segregated maritime front and the provincial neighbourhood. This ambitioned the perpetuation of the existing local life style in order to entice and retain native inhabitants. On one hand, the project innovate the housing typology imitating part of the original town structure. On the other hand, a mattress building with public co-living apartments is created to maintain and control the touristifaction and the speculation of the neighbourhood coast. The buildings net promotes the relationship among the miscellaneous generations and target the creation of a new sustainable way of living.

2018-2019; Marzahn-Hellersdorf (Berlin, Germany) Fernanda Seoane, Carolina Esteves, Mariana Antunes Marzahn-Hellersdorf is located in the north-eastern part of Berlin, right on the border of Brandenburg and Hellersdorf. Hellersdorf is an area formalized through social housing developments (plattenbau) built during the 70s. The district is characterized by a green belt that acts as a common space between both housing state neighbourhoods.

TU Berlin Instructors: David Levain Veljko Markovic

Despite that the area have a large number of schools and various types of facilities, long distances make car essential. Many of these services were planned in the original development. In addition, during last years government invested in the improvement of urbanization and in new infrastructures to avoid the depopulation of the neighbourhood after the fall of the wall. The proposals seek to reconvert different kinds of space excess, characteristic features of these kind of developments, and rethink their use: 1. Living Mall - Variable centrality 2. Vizinhança - Densification and alternative co-living to housing 3. Promenade - Cultural Center

being a commercial centrality, make it became something else. On one hand the proposal densify the area via small village-type affordable houses placing them at the terrace. The second way is by intervening on the ground level parking, and giving it more uses than the one, that it already has. Because the mall is always closed on Sundays, this big area is left empty for a whole day, so our idea comes from the multiple layering of uses.

Our proposal is based on three main strategies: the first step would be to implement densification in the empty space, by adding new housing buildings that would also have some communal areas; the second development would be to establish a transitional passageway to the park (through openings from the inside of the quarter towards the green area outside); the last intervention, would be to improve the existent by giving the housing blocks a new way of distribution, promoting interactions within the neighbourhood and its community.

COMMON GROUND The intervention profits from its presence within the green area, bridging the place as a“Nature Promenade”, going through the landscape. When it reaches the Ahrensfelder Berg Park, the bridge attains a new building -as a the entrance to the Park. Conceptually, this element will articulate different scales: as a gathering place, the building articulates the local community -the building itself should work as a place for exhibitions and small events, having an educational/cultural program as well, promoted by the engagement with schools around. As an architectural object in the landscape, it connects its different elements – being the Berg, the Park and the agricultural fields in Brandenburg – working as a kind of view point to the landscape.

2016-2017; Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona, Spain) Enric Pulido ETSAB Instructors: Jorge Perea

Action plan located in the historic main street of Hospitalet del Llobregat, a pedestrian area with a lot of commercial activity, facilities and social movement on the neighborhood scale. In addition, the public space had been recently renovated and adapted to modern needs. After we recognized the morphological section of the street and analyzed its uses and historical evolution, we realize the lack of unity in the main axis of the old town and its surrounding spaces. Working with the communicative capacity of the public space, we created a syntax of ‘light neurons’, as synthesizers and connectors of the old town. The project gives complexity to the surroundings and scale the intensity of the proposals in relationship with the places where its located.

These components, designed under ergonomic principles, can be detached from the main structure, ensembled and disassembled between them forming different and multiple furniture combinations.
