Captain of the Titanic Edward Smith – Not Guilty! Captain Smith was due to retire after a long and successful career as a ship captain. He was delighted at the prospect of ending his career on the maiden voyage of the world’s largest and most prestigious ship. It would have also been a huge honor to beat and hold the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing. Captain Smith had never been involved in a maritime

accident and would never have needlessly put many lives at risk for his own personal ego. Many people closest to him quickly praised his selfless character and were not surprised that he lost his life insuring that as many lives were saved and remand with his ship at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean.

Who else is responsible? People all over the world are asking the question how can an unsinkable ship sink with such a high loss of life. Many are blaming the architect Thomas Andrew for building more first class cabins instead of more hulls, while others blame captain Stanley Lord for not responding to SOS calls and racing to the Titanic when it crashed. There have even been suggestions that the ship builders Hardland and Wolf are to blame for using poor quality materials. Firstly: Thomas Andrew designed the ship to the specifications of the owner. He said in an interview that one of the hardest challenges was meeting the owner’s request for

more first class cabins and maintaining a high level of safety with taller hulls and more lifeboats. Secondly, Captain Stanley Lord regretted that he turned the radio off but also said that it was usually safe to do so. Further more any ship in danger normally has enough lifeboats to save it passengers. Finally, a spokesman for the ship builders made a statement expressing sympathy for the loss of lives in the disaster. He added that no ship could survive such a horrific collision with an iceberg at such high speed.

Guilty!! Joseph Bruce Ismay As the chairman of White Star Line, J. Bruce Ismay is highly competitive and ambitious for his companies’ success. Bruce has also proven to be a ruthless businessman who will stop at nothing to maximize profit. His desire to make as much money as possible led to the decision to reduce the number of hulls in preference for more first class cabins. As a marketing genius, he knew only too well that a record Atlantic crossing on Titanic’s’ maiden voyage would be a sure way for making more money.

The only thing greater then his ruthlessness and greed is his sense for survival so he ensured a place on a life boat ahead of many woman and children.
