Yale Athletics Mission The mission of Yale varsity athletics is to attract outstanding student athletes, who aspire to undertake the challenge of a high-level education while proudly representing Yale University in the pursuit of championships. Through exceptional facilities and coaches, Yale Athletics ensures that our students learn the important values of leadership, integrity, discipline and teamwork. The aspiration is that in the course of preparation and competition, students enter a co-curricular laboratory for learning that will fit them to lead in all of their future endeavors. Looking back on 2014-15 I feel incredibly proud of a year that saw Yale competing time and again at the top of the Ivy League and on the national stage. The tireless work of our studentathletes and coaches never ceases to amaze me. This work ethic and will to compete is no doubt the cornerstone of our academic excellence and athletic success. Familiar with the championship hunt, Head Coach Erin Appleman and the women of Yale Volleyball won a record setting fifth straight Ivy Championship this fall. Senior Captain Mollie Rogers was named Ivy League Player of the Year – an honor that has gone to a Bulldog for each of the last four years! Men’s Hockey captured an Ivy League Championship and fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last seven years. Malcom G. Chace head coach, Keith Allain ’80 was named Ivy League Coach of the Year. Zach Leonard ’89, McNay Family Director of Sailing, and the No. 1 sailing team were a dominant force yet again in college sailing, earning three national titles this season. Our Men’s Basketball team finished as co-Ivy Champions and closed out a 22 win season, the most the program has had in more than 60 years under the leadership of junior Justin Sears who earned Ivy League Player of the Year. Heavyweight Crew had a banner season as the Eastern Sprints and Ivy League Champions. They beat Harvard in the 150th edition of the Yale-Harvard Regatta and completed the season with the prestigious Ladies’ Challenge Plate at the Henley Royal Regatta by beating national champion University of Washington.
The Yale Bowl Turns 100 2014 marked 100 years of the Yale Bowl, historic home of Yale Football since November 21, 1914. When it was built, it was the largest athletic stadium in the world and the first football venue with seating completely surrounding the field. In the 2014 season Yale hosted six home games, including one against the Cadets from historic rival Army. In a day full of pageantry, fans in the Bowl were witness to a cadet march, paratrooper flyover, and thrilling 49-43 Yale overtime victory. As part of the 100th celebration, the “Legends of the Bowl” were invited back to the final home game against Princeton. Sixty-seven former Yale football players were selected to one of the Bowl’s five all-era teams and were honored at halftime.
It seemed at every turn our teams were competing for and winning championships! Our athletes are not alone in their determination — our alumni continue to showcase their own commitment to constantly strive for a better Blue. Our Football Association works diligently to break records for fundraising each year through its annual Football Golf Outing – setting out each year to top their target from the previous year. The alumni of the Yale Crew Association and the Yale Softball Association showed impressive gains in participation through the Drive for Eli’s Challenge and each earned the reward of $10,000 for their sport. And each of you through your support, mentorship, and presence helped elevate Yale Athletics this year. You can read more about our impressive fundraising results on page 8. The will to compete is what sets Yale Athletics apart. It drives our students to excel in their fields of study and field of play. It propels our coaches and support staff to mentor, teach, and better our programs each day. And, it pushes all of us forward in our pursuit of championships as our mission statement (left) clearly proclaims. Thank you for your support in 2014-15. I look forward to working with you all in 2015-16! Best regards,
Tom Beckett Director of Athletics 1

HOLIDAY GIFT-GIVING INITIATIVE Varsity teams sponsor families who cannot afford holiday presents and buy kids items on their wish lists.
Intramurals Highlights During the 2014-2015 school year, the Yale undergraduate intramurals program offered 30 different sports during fall, winter, and spring seasons. All full-season sports were played either in a full 11-game round-robin format between colleges or in two divisions of six colleges each with crossover playoffs between the top teams. Additionally, a number of one- or two-time special events such as cross country, swimming, and golf were conducted. In a fierce two-team race that came down to the spring season’s final days, Timothy Dwight held off Davenport to win the Tyng Cup IM Championship.

Thomas A. Beckett, President Salovey, and William S. Beinecke ’36 pose before Beinecke’s portrait in the golf house lobby.
Yale Athletics is incredibly grateful to President Salovey for granting approval on the following capital projects which will change the scope of Yale Athletics and impact almost all of our teams. If you are interested in being a part of any of the projects described below, please contact Alison Cole ’99, Director of Development at 203-432-3344. Naming opportunities in each space are available!
Yale Names the Beinecke Golf House
The New Natatorium
Ranked as the nation’s premiere collegiate golf course, the Course at Yale owes some of its best attributes to one of Yale’s most generous benefactors: William S. Beinecke ’36.
Fundraising continues on the pool at Payne Whitney Gym. Over 40 alumni and friends have made pledges to this exciting project. This new facility will allow Yale to: • Host an Ivy League Championship meet due to expansion of lanes and deck size • Allow for more efficient home contests —separate diving well and connection to third floor practice pool allows for enhanced water space for multiple events • Recruit against our competitors in the League: as facilities are becoming more integral to student-athletes choosing an undergraduate institution, we need to ensure our facility offers world-class amenities and the chance to further develop as a swimmer or diver • Provide fast water: 9 foot depth throughout is proven to be the swiftest water depth • Serve the broader Yale community for their fitness needs with a facility that is centrally located and walkable from the entire Yale campus • Serve club teams such as water polo and intramural programming for what will soon be 14 residential colleges • Serve other varsity teams for rehab, conditioning, and sports medicine purposes • Offer additional water space for recreational courses such as scuba diving and life guarding/water rescue.
In April, to honor Beinecke’s lifelong dedication to Yale golf, President Salovey, Yale Athletics Director Tom Beckett, and many friends and family gathered to name the clubhouse in his honor. At the event— sitting near an oil painting in his likeness and a list of winners of the annual William S. Beinecke Guest Invitational Golf Tournament—Beinecke reminisced about his many days on the fairways, including years in which facilities were little more than a shack with a shower and a bench for changing shoes. “It is such a thrill to have the Beinecke name on an athletics facility and to recognize the leader of a family that has done so much across campus,” said Beckett.
Drive for Elis This year, Yale Athletics alumni came out in impressive numbers to support their sport association and compete in the Drive for Elis Challenge. With nearly 1,300 new donors to athletics this year, the race was tight for the two awards of $10,000 – one for the association with the largest number of new donors and one for the association with the largest increase in participation percentage. After the books closed on the 2014-15 fiscal year, two associations walked away victorious, but many posted notable gains in participation and the effort to engage alumni was incredible to watch. The Yale Crew Association won the award for most new donors with 253 new donors – 572 donors overall and a participation percentage of 21%! The Yale Softball Association won the award for the largest increase in participation with an increase of 21% over last year with 80 donors this year and an overall participation percentage of 29%!
Yale Alumnus Endows Fencing The sense of community among Yale Fencers remains long after graduation, as legions of former Yale fencers can attest: today, over 450 alumni and friends make donations, connect for events, and cheer current teams through the Yale Fencing Association. Over the years, this support has helped Yale’s men’s and women’s squads reach the top ranks in national, regional, and Ivy League competition. The team now looks to build further success thanks to a $3 million gift from Carl Knobloch ’51—a Yale fencing legend who has endowed a fund to support the program in perpetuity. Knobloch’s gift gives a significant boost to the fencing program by underwriting general operating expenses, including travel, equipment, coaching salaries, and recruiting. In recognition of the gift, the head coaching position will be named permanently for Knobloch. A skilled competitor in saber, epee, and foil, Knobloch represented Yale at numerous national championships. He then went on to build a distinguished career in finance and industry.
Golf Team Practice Facility Construction has already begun out at the Course at Yale on a new driving range and practice area that can accommodate the needs of both of our varsity teams and golf course members. In addition, planning and architectural drawings have begun on an accompanying building that will include: • Coaches offices • Team locker rooms • Team meeting rooms • Heated hitting bays for all weather This improved facility will make the Course at Yale an attractive space for an NCAA Championship bid and enhance recruiting for our varsity programs.
Softball/Field Hockey Field House Planning and drawings have begun on a field house between Johnson Field and DeWitt Family Field to accommodate the needs of our softball and field hockey programs. This brand new facility will include: • Team rooms with state-of-the art audio/visual for practice and games • Public restrooms • Ticket office • Concession stand • Alumni/Event space • Viewing terrace
Bubble Over Yale Bowl & Turf Current weather conditions in New Haven have made it very difficult for many of our outdoor teams to maximize their performance, both in and out of season. In addition, Yale Athletics has spent a significant amount of money sending teams to indoor facilities throughout Connecticut so they can practice in inclement weather. Putting artificial turf down in Yale Bowl, along with a non-permanent bubble structure from November to March, is an incredible competitive advantage. Plans for this project have been finalized and fundraising has commenced. 9

The Plan for Athletic Excellence The Ivy League model for athletics is the most expensive in the nation. Only 13 teams are required to be recognized at the Division I level and every school in the Ivy League hosts more than 30. In addition, without the revenue provided by television contracts, bowl games, and high profile endorsements the amount being invested by the Universities in the Ivy League is significantly more than schools in more high profile conferences. Yale is committed to creating a world-class experience for 858 student-athletes on 35 varsity teams. This means access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, an unparalleled coaching faculty, and ability to test their skills against top collegiate competition in their sport. As the landscape of Ivy League athletics becomes increasingly competitive, the financial support from the alumni and friends of Yale Athletics is paramount to achieving that mission. The economic downturn has impacted budgets throughout the country and clearly here at Yale. To address the needs of today, along with planning for tomorrow, we created the Plan for Athletic Excellence—a five-year strategic plan to grow our endowments while maximizing annual-use funds for our teams.

Supporting Yale Athletics: Annual Giving Yale Sport Associations Every team at Yale is supported by a Sport Association. The Sport Associations are represented by a board of alumni that provide up-todate information about our programs, mentor our student athletes, and to help sustain the proud and storied tradition of Athletics at Yale. In addition to raising money, the Associations enhance the experience
of current Yale players and establish a strong connection between Yale Athletics and the greater Yale community through such initiatives as career networking and job placement, and special events (including receptions, golf outings, and alumni/ae games).
Ray Tompkins Associates Athletic Directors Excellence Fund The RTA fund is a general, unrestricted annual fund that promotes excellence across all 35 varsity teams. It is used at the discretion of the Athletic Director to ensure all sports, and the athletic department itself,
have the resources necessary to operate at the highest levels. The fund supports the most urgent of needs within Yale Athletics.

Unrestricted Endowments
Yale Athletics also benefits from two unrestricted endowments that promote excellence across all 35 varsity teams. The spendable yield from these funds are used at the discretion of the Athletic Director to ensure all sports, and the athletic department itself, will have the resources necessary to operate at the highest levels. These funds will support the most urgent of needs within Yale Athletics. WISER: Unrestricted endowment for women’s varsity teams and coaches RAY TOMPKINS ENDOWMENT: Unrestricted endowment for all varsity needs Gifts of any amount over $10,000 can be added to the principal of these two existing funds. Yale Athletics Excellence Endowments: Investing in Our Future As Yale Athletics continues its lofty quest to endow our entire varsity sports operation, we were helped by the generosity of Meghan McMahon ’87 and David Swensen ’76 M.A., ‘78 M. Phil., ‘80 Ph.D who created six excellence endowments for our teams in FY 2014. These programmatic funds in the sports of women’s basketball, football, golf, hockey, softball and tennis were created with the longterm goal of increasing the amount of support to our teams through endowment yield and reducing the amount of pressure on annual fundraising. In 2015, they added another excellence fund for volleyball and partnered with Casey Whalen Sellers ’96 to create a similar find for swimming and diving. It is the hope of our leadership donors that other alumni and friends of Yale Athletics will consider making gifts to add to the principal of these funds so they will continue to grow and cover even more of our operating budgets. In the coming year, you will be hearing from your favorite sport association about how your can simultaneously invest in the present and future of your favorite team. These Excellence Funds are the perfect vehicle for those who want to do both – make an annual gift and add principal to an existing endowment. We will be sharing an incentive challenge about moving both of those needles shortly. Keep your eyes open for more information. If you are interested in supporting one of the Yale Athletics Excellence Endowments or would like to create your own named Excellence Endowment, please contact Alison Cole ’99, Director of Athletic Development at 203-432-3344.

Planned Giving For many friends of Yale, a bequest can be a way to make a profound and lasting impact. A bequest made now can promote the future of Yale Athletics with little or no effect on your current resources. Bequests can be in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or other property. You can designate a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, a fixed percentage of your entire estate, or leave your residuary estate after providing for loved ones. For more information, go to yale. planyourlegacy.org.
