FALL 2013

LETTER FROM THE SWIMMING AND DIVING ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Friends of Yale Swimming & Diving, The teams’ seasons are off to a strong start. On behalf of the program, I’d like to update you on what’s in store for the year, to thank you for your past support and to encourage you to be an active voice for Yale Swimming & Diving. With each year that passes, Tim, Jim and Chris continue to build momentum for the Men’s and Women’s teams. In addition to New Haven the teams will be in New York, Pennsylvania, Boston, New Brunswick, Providence, New Hampshire, Cambridge and Austin and Minneapolis for NCAAs this season. If you live in or near any of these locations come cheer on the Elis. We’re excited to host, the Yale-Harvard-Princeton tri-meet in New Haven January 31-February 2. This promises to be an event-packed YSDA Alumni weekend with rooms blocked at the Marriott and special events at Mory’s and the Yale Library Manuscripts & Archives. We need your help. The transition of presidency is a formative time for Yale Swimming & Diving and all of Yale Athletics. The University continues to balance its various priorities and assign its resources accordingly. High-profile examples include new residential colleges needed to expand undergraduate capacity and updates to significantly outdated science facilities. Yale continues to view updated aquatic facilities as a project that must be entirely donor-funded. The tireless Alumni Group Steering Committee consisting of Steve Clark ‘65, Tim Garton ‘64, Todd Kaplan ‘86, Greg Lawler ‘68 and Lisa O’Dell Rapuano ‘88, continues to persevere. They welcome your involvement. In the meantime, in response to some of our concerns, the Athletic Department has been working with Yale Facilities to better maintain the conditions of the pool and surrounding areas for the teams and spectators. There also have been some University-required changes to annual fundraising for athletics that Tom Beckett outlined in a 10/31 email. Representatives from all of Yale’s sports associations have begun working with the Athletic Department to better advocate for athletics at Yale. Your financial contributions remain hugely important to the Swimming & Diving program and make it possible for the teams to continue to improve and compete at a high level. Donations can be directed either to our annual fund (our top priority) or to our endowment. Endowment gifts are not subject to the 6% PICTURED AT TOP: WOMEN’S AND MEN’S 2012ͳ2013 SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS

indirect cost recovery; if you are interested in making a gift to one of our endowment funds, please contact Alison Cole at 203432-3344 or Alison.cole@yale.edu. If you are in a ‘4 or ‘9 reunion year, committing a five-year pledge toward YSDA will help provide financial stability. Complete the enclosed form, or go to: giving.yale.edu Contributions to the annual fund help pay for crucial items such as team travel to NCAAs and other national and international meets, coaches’ recruiting travel, on-campus recruiting trips, the winter training trip and team equipment. For example: $150 pays for three state-of-the art competition suits $650 pays for sammys, matts and competition suits for ½ the diving team $700 covers the average cost of a recruit visit to campus $1,000 covers the non-airfare cost of winter training trip per athlete $1,500 pays for kickboards and tempo trainers for the entire team $6,000 pays for head coach travel to U.S. Junior & Senior Nationals Finally, I would like to thank the members of the YSDA Board of Directors for their continued leadership and energy in volunteering and donating. They span sixty years of graduating classes and are a diverse group of alumni leaders. If you would like to become more involved, please do let us know! This is also a great way to get to know alumni from different years, professions and geographies. Thank you for your support; we hope to see many of you at our various events this season. BOOLA! COACH’S CORNER / MEN Dear Alumni and Friends, Welcome to our 116th season. Hard to believe this is my 4th season since taking over the program. I am pleased with the progress we have made to date, but by no means satisfied. Our quest to move the program forward continues. This year we have enlisted 7 swimmers and 1 diver to aid in that effort. TIM WISE, ROBERT J.H. Each in his own way will be KIPHUTH, HEAD COACH YALE called upon to swim faster or MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING dive better than he ever has before. We are assembling more talent with each class, which translates to improved depth when it comes to dual meets and the championship season. In order to win a championship – we need more depth – bottom line. So far this fall we have had the boys on the blocks 3 times already. We swam a quadrathon (100 fly/back/breast&free) on October 18th. The following Saturday we travelled to Georgetown for a scrimmage with the Hoyas and Boston College. We started the month of November with the Blue – vs – White scrimmage.

The meet came down to the wire. Seniors Pat Killian (White) and Captain Ed Becker (Blue) anchored their respective relays with Becker (46.99) outsplitting Killian (47.10), but Killian holding on for the win. The final times on those relays were: 3:05.73 for White and 3:05.96 for Blue. The final score was White 67 – Blue 57. On Friday (Nov. 8th) we opened the dual meet season with a victory over Southern Connecticut. This will be our final tune up for Columbia on Nov. 16th. I know we will have great support at Columbia on November 16. The meet begins at 5:00 pm. Afterwards please consider joining us at V&T’s down the street as we did 2 years ago. I am very happy with the culture we are developing and the commitment the boys are willing to make. They are good kids – doing all the right things. Please do all you can to provide the support they need. I know we say it every year, but your support is so critical to the programs’ success. Thank you so much for all you do. Look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event. Go Yale! Best, Tim

COACH’S CORNER / WOMEN Dear Alumni and Friends,

It has been a strong start to the 2013-2014 year for the Women's team. Our month of captain practices in August was a huge base for us to build the season upon. I JIM HENRY, ROBERT J.H. KIPHUTH believe those workouts were HEAD COACH YALE WOMEN’S great because of the trainSWIMMING AND DIVING ing that occurred from April through August. There is a strong commitment to swimming over the summer months and it is paying off. We have had some great opportunities to bond as a team with a few events off campus. The first was our Memorial Day visit to Hammonasset State Park in Madison where the 10 freshman and 19 returning swimmers and divers found out about themselves and some of the traditions of Yale Swimming & Diving. The second outing involved an evening of apple picking at Bishops Orchards in Guilford followed by a great team dinner with pumpkin carving at the Springhorn’s in Guilford (Emma Smith’s ’16 older sister). The Scrimmage against UConn was a great introduction to racing. The trip to Storrs was fantastic and the swimming & diving even better. We totaled 10 wins out of 16 events and set two new pool records by sophomore Eva Fabian in the 1000 Free, and freshman Isla Hutchinson-Maddox in the 200 Fly. 2.

Our Fall Break week was extremely productive. On Wednesday, October 23rd the team took part in an Interviewing Skills Workshop with several Swimming & Diving Alumni in the Faculty Room in Davenport College. Many thanks to Matt Meade, Dave Jacobs, Pat Haden and Moira McCloskey for putting together a very valuable evening; I know that the students that participated were raving about how useful the workshop was. We traveled to Annapolis to scrimmage Navy and Virginia over the following day. We showed improvement from UConn in times and strategy. We ended up winning 12 out of 16 events from Navy. The 25 meter pool created some confusion with times, but the racing was strong. It was great to see so many parents make the trip to Navy. The team and coaches were psyched to be able to visit with alum Abby Nunn ’12 after the meet. We ended the trip with a combined Saturday morning practice with the Johns Hopkins team in Baltimore. Both teams enjoyed the training. On the way home we stopped in New Jersey to eat lunch with Junior Becky DeLaFuente’s family. We are looking forward to starting the official season soon. I hope that you are able to see us in action. Thanks for your support, Jim

COACH’S CORNER / DIVING Dear Alumni and Friends, The men’s and women’s diving program is going well so far this year. We have had scrimmages against UCONN, UVA, BC, Georgetown and Navy. All of this early competition keeps the practices honest and the athletes working towards their end season goals both individually and for the team. There are 4 men divers and 6 women divers. This is a good number of athletes to be working with. The team has really CHRIS BERGERE, DIVING COACH been getting the workouts completed in and out of the pool. The weight and strength training is going well along with our other training in trampoline, dry land somersaults, dry land skill movement and practice in the pool off the diving boards.

Our travel to Navy and Georgetown was fantastic. The weekend weather was absolutely gorgeous and we had many alumni and parents come out and support the team. There was good food, conversation and many laughs had by all after and during the competition. Having these experiences with each other throughout one’s swimming and diving career is so very important to keep us engaged in “the team.” We are the past, present and future all rolled into one. The Yale program exists because we make it so. It is a valuable learning experience that we hold dear. This program is yours. If you follow it, make it a point to get out to some of the meets. Watch the races and acrobatic dives. Smell the chlorine, feel the pool humidity, hear the cheering and I guarantee it will bring back memories you may have forgotten you had or at least stir the passion you once felt in the heat of completion. I feel both the men’s and women’s teams are off to a strong start. We can always use your support any way you can bring it. The athletes are really enjoying the many facets of a well-run athletic program. Bring on Columbia November 15 &16 to open the season in NYC. Go Bulldogs, Chris

REMEMBERING ROGER GOETTSCHE ‘65

L

egendary Yale backstroker, Roger Goettsche, passed away on January 1, 2013. A key member of the exceptional Class of '65 team, Roger lived in Clinton, Connecticut and retained strong ties to Yale swimming through the years. His contemporaries will always remember his significant contributions to Yale's national-level swimming accomplishments during this era. Equally memorable were his forever-youthful enthusiasm for life, his dedication and sense of purpose, and his generous spirit---all traits he carried over throughout his life to sailing, drumming and, professionally, to medicine and teaching. Roger is survived by his wife Rosemary, a Yale swimming devotee; daughters Katherine Goettsche of New York, NY (Yale swimmer in the Class of 2005), Emily Goettsche of New Haven, CT (currently studying at the Yale School of Public Health), Martha Feinstein of Northampton, MA, and brother Charles Goettsche of Berkeley, CA. BECOME A MENTOR This past year was successful for the Mentoring committee. A number of alumni-mentors guided members of the women's and men's team by coaching them through the summer internship process. The proof was in the results: many swimmers/divers were made full time offers by the end of the summer. We also continued to have success introducing younger alumni with the "less young" alums- our goal was to facilitate the connections across the decades but we were thrilled to see that this also led to information sharing about job opportunities and actual subsequent hires. Matt Meade ’87, hosted his annual interview workshop with the help of David Jacobs ‘90, Patrick Haden ‘08, and Moira McCloskey ‘07 in mid October. The turnout was a staggering success- we hosted 4 times the number of swimmers from past years, with 20+ undergrads attending this year. An "informal poll" suggested that this was mostly based on the positive feedback they had heard about from their friends who had attended in previous years. We continue to try and match the team's upperclassmen with alumni who work in their career fields of interest in the hopes of helping steer and guide them on their path to a successful professional life after Yale. We would love to continue this fantastic momentum -- all we need is more alumni participation. Our goal in the next year or two is to compile a list of all (willing) alumni with their emails, career field, and company (current and recent history) that would be available to the current swimmers/divers. We continue to look for volunteers to help guide those undergrad swimmers/divers on the team as mentors. The amount of time you want to give depends on you- it can really just be a few phone calls / emails and some introductions if you feel they are warranted. Of course no one is going to stop you from more interaction and assistance but we are not requiring it by any means. Please email Moira (mmccloskey85@gmail.com) or Alexis (lerneralexis@gmail.com) if you want to help. Everyone is encouraged to participate!
