FALL 2013

LETTER FROM THE SWIMMING AND DIVING ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Friends of Yale Swimming & Diving, The teams’ seasons are off to a strong start. On behalf of the program, I’d like to update you on what’s in store for the year, to thank you for your past support and to encourage you to be an active voice for Yale Swimming & Diving. With each year that passes, Tim, Jim and Chris continue to build momentum for the Men’s and Women’s teams. In addition to New Haven the teams will be in New York, Pennsylvania, Boston, New Brunswick, Providence, New Hampshire, Cambridge and Austin and Minneapolis for NCAAs this season. If you live in or near any of these locations come cheer on the Elis. We’re excited to host, the Yale-Harvard-Princeton tri-meet in New Haven January 31-February 2. This promises to be an event-packed YSDA Alumni weekend with rooms blocked at the Marriott and special events at Mory’s and the Yale Library Manuscripts & Archives. We need your help. The transition of presidency is a formative time for Yale Swimming & Diving and all of Yale Athletics. The University continues to balance its various priorities and assign its resources accordingly. High-profile examples include new residential colleges needed to expand undergraduate capacity and updates to significantly outdated science facilities. Yale continues to view updated aquatic facilities as a project that must be entirely donor-funded. The tireless Alumni Group Steering Committee consisting of Steve Clark ‘65, Tim Garton ‘64, Todd Kaplan ‘86, Greg Lawler ‘68 and Lisa O’Dell Rapuano ‘88, continues to persevere. They welcome your involvement. In the meantime, in response to some of our concerns, the Athletic Department has been working with Yale Facilities to better maintain the conditions of the pool and surrounding areas for the teams and spectators. There also have been some University-required changes to annual fundraising for athletics that Tom Beckett outlined in a 10/31 email. Representatives from all of Yale’s sports associations have begun working with the Athletic Department to better advocate for athletics at Yale. Your financial contributions remain hugely important to the Swimming & Diving program and make it possible for the teams to continue to improve and compete at a high level. Donations can be directed either to our annual fund (our top priority) or to our endowment. Endowment gifts are not subject to the 6% PICTURED AT TOP: WOMEN’S AND MEN’S 2012ͳ2013 SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS

indirect cost recovery; if you are interested in making a gift to one of our endowment funds, please contact Alison Cole at 203432-3344 or Alison.cole@yale.edu. If you are in a ‘4 or ‘9 reunion year, committing a five-year pledge toward YSDA will help provide financial stability. Complete the enclosed form, or go to: giving.yale.edu Contributions to the annual fund help pay for crucial items such as team travel to NCAAs and other national and international meets, coaches’ recruiting travel, on-campus recruiting trips, the winter training trip and team equipment. For example: $150 pays for three state-of-the art competition suits $650 pays for sammys, matts and competition suits for ½ the diving team $700 covers the average cost of a recruit visit to campus $1,000 covers the non-airfare cost of winter training trip per athlete $1,500 pays for kickboards and tempo trainers for the entire team $6,000 pays for head coach travel to U.S. Junior & Senior Nationals Finally, I would like to thank the members of the YSDA Board of Directors for their continued leadership and energy in volunteering and donating. They span sixty years of graduating classes and are a diverse group of alumni leaders. If you would like to become more involved, please do let us know! This is also a great way to get to know alumni from different years, professions and geographies. Thank you for your support; we hope to see many of you at our various events this season. BOOLA! Kristin Krebs-Dick ‘93
