Dear Friends of Yale Athletics,

2011-12 was an exciting time to be a Bulldog! Yale Athletics experienced a tremendous amount of success both on the playing field and off. Our teams brought home an additional five Ivy League championships and continued our tradition of academic excellence, placing in the top five in APR rankings for the 7th consecutive year. The great success we have achieved in recent years is an outward display of Yale Athletics’ commitment to excellence for all our student-athletes. Thomas Beckett This year also marked the first of Operation Overtime, a comprehensive giving platform with the goal of extending success to all of Yale’s teams. We set high goals for this campaign, believing that our alumni and supporters would be up to the challenge. The response we received from many friends of Yale proved we have the best fans in the country! I would like to personally thank the more than 5,000 people who contributed to this campaign. We are set up for more success in the future thanks to your generous contributions.

Once again, we have set lofty goals for the coming year. Through the Sport Associations and a renewed commitment to our Ray Tompkins Associates, we will continue to provide all of our student-athletes with the support needed to excel in the classroom and on the playing field. In addition, we are focusing on growing our overall endowments, including named and sport-specific endowments to ensure excellence in perpetuity. This money will allow us to build on the success we have enjoyed in the past no matter the economic climate. We know this message may sound familiar. However, as we continue to pursue the pinnacle of competition, we need your support now more than ever. Just as it takes every player’s best effort for our teams to succeed, it will take the best from all our friends of Yale Athletics to ensure lasting success. Let’s Move Forward Together. Go Bulldogs!

Sincerely,

Tom Beckett Director of Athletics

Mission, Philosophy, and Objectives

Mission Yale University offers its students a liberal education, one which has its focus on the intellectual and moral development of the individual, and which gives students a foundation for learning throughout their lives. Yale has long recognized that such an education is not fostered by its academic component alone. Part of it is constituted by those challenging and pleasurable experiences and extracurricular activities – like varsity and recreational athletics – that enable an individual to give fuller force to academic training.

Goals in Support of Yale Athletics Mission • Yale is committed to equal opportunity and seeks to attract exceptionally qualified students, coaches and staff of diverse backgrounds. • Learning how to strive to win, to compete with pride and honor, to make sacrifices, to persevere when all seems lost, and to develop a sense of obligation and responsibility for others are lessons that make athletics a school for accomplishment and character for the individual. • Aspiration and achievement in competitive athletic endeavor play a proportional role within any student’s school life. • Support of a wide range of extracurricular programs presents significant opportunities for contributions to the well-being of members of its community.

Philosophy and Objectives Competitive Excellence • Each sport program to finish first in the Ivy League. • Prepare and maintain the athletics facilities and training equipment at the highest standard of Division I competition. • Utilize the Kiphuth Leadership Academy to train students and staff in the principles of leadership; provide increased nutritional and sports psychology counseling to students and staff. • Continue to provide Ivy League championship opportunities for club sports programs.

Fiscal Responsibility • Explore additional initiatives for cost-effective and collective bidding/purchasing. • Increase departmental awareness and identify areas of sustainability. Think Green.

Positive Work Environment • Continue to provide avenues for staff involvement in all departmental goals, work environment improvements and general policies and procedures and encourage ideas for improvement. • Provide training and professional development opportunities for all staff.

Superior Customer Service • Continue to expand media accessibility for varsity contests. • Professional, courteous, prompt, and effective communication with all visitors, callers, and fellow staff.

Captain’s Corner

Will Ferraro Lightweight Crew Captain Wyndmoor, PA. Silliman College What does being a Yale captain mean to you? It’s incredibly humbling to assume the role I’ve been looking up to for advice and guidance for the past three years. It’s a huge responsibility. It means leading by example, being an effective communicator between the team and the coach, and always conveying a positive attitude. What has participating in sports at Yale meant to you? To me, Yale IS Yale Lightweight Crew. The two are inseparable. My closest friendships and fondest memories were made on the water. Rowing at Yale has been as much a part of my college education as anything in a classroom. How has your time at Yale prepared you for future career? I would say it’s given me the confidence to approach any problem and trust in myself to succeed if I work hard at it.

New in 2011–2012

Bulldog PAWS Bulldog PAWS (Pediatrics Alliance with Student-Athletes) pairs Yale athletic teams with pediatric patients with severe medical conditions. Various teams “adopt” a child as a new teammate and develop a bond of mutual support and friendship between child and team. By adopting these children, the athletes make them members of their teams, including bringing them Bulldogs gear, telling them about the teams and what competing is like, and more importantly being their friend — emailing them, visiting them in clinic, and inviting them to movies and games.

“My favorite part of the program is the mutual benefit felt by every person involved. We are committed to being big sisters to our adopted teammate—we attend her school concerts, check up on her over the phone or email, visit her house, and support her during her doctor’s visits. She and her family come to all of our home games and she does our team cheer over the phone before every away game, and that kind of dedication and support means so much to us. Our adoptee has taught us to be optimistic, persevere through adversity, and appreciate success. This program reminds all of us that we always have unwavering support and others who believe in us.” – Alyssa Zupon, Women’s Ice Hockey

Moving Forward Together 2012-2013 promises to be another special year for all those involved with Yale Athletics. With five defending Ivy League champions and strong recruiting classes, the Bulldogs are poised for even more success on the field. Yale Athletics is excited about the future and what it will bring. We expect to build on the history and tradition of years past while striving to become the best we can be. Our student-athletes understand that only by working together as a team can victories be won and success built. We invite you to invoke that spirit of teamwork by continuing to support Yale Athletics. Let’s move forward together. Show your support for Yale Athletics by donating to the Association of your favorite sport, or consider donating to the revamped Ray Tompkins Associates — an unrestricted fund used at the Director’s discretion to promote excellence across all of Yale Athletics. Yale has significantly increased the fundraising goals for next year. Help us propel our student-athletes to the top in both their athletic and academic endeavors!

Coach’s Corner

Keith Allain Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach of Men’s Hockey How have sport associations helped you improve your program? Our association helps in many ways. They assist with the yearly running of our program and step up in a big way when we need something major as well. Another way that they help is how they make our student athletes feel a part of a family here at Yale. They attend games, post-game functions, help with internships, career planning, and careers. When we sell Yale we also sell this incredible network that our guys will become members in for life. What are your goals as a coach? Our goals are simple; we want to recruit the best student athletes available, develop them as people and athletes, integrate them into an outstanding team environment, and consistently compete for championships. How does annual giving help you reach your goals? Annual giving is an important part of our overall budget. Together with the University our donors provide us with the means to recruit, purchase equipment for our players, and travel as a team. Essentially the partnership between Yale and our association is critical in running our program. What makes Yale special/unique in college sports? Yale is such a special place because it allows/encourages our student athletes to obtain excellence in ALL that they do. Yale is one of the very few places in the world where you can pursue a world-class education and compete for a national championship in your sport. 13

What makes Yale unique in college basketball? Basketball is huge on every campus in America for both men and women. Vast resources are poured into basketball and we are commissioned with the challenge to be heard above the noise of big time college basketball with our message of choosing Yale for the right reasons. Coach Jones and I and our staffs are good at getting our message heard. What are your goals as a coach? We want the best players at Yale—incredibly bright, multi dimensional, world changing ballers. We don’t want the young men and women who choose Yale for all the right reasons to have to compromise their basketball experience in any way. While basketball is perhaps the most difficult sport in the Ivy League to achieve success not only within the League but also on a national scale, we feel we can challenge for both. How has the Yale Basketball Association helped you improve your program? The Association is hugely important to our success. Our teams have to travel to play against the best, and prepare in a championship environment; our coaches have to travel extensively to find the best and brightest players in the nation and have the advanced technological training and scouting tools to help us keep up. All of our needs require resources and the generous support of our Association members makes all the difference in the world.

Alumna perspective

Meredith Callahan ‘08 Women’s Lacrosse Alumna Chatham, New Jersey Davenport College Equities Sales-Trader, Knight Capital Group What do you enjoy about serving on the lacrosse association board? I am new to the board but have so far enjoyed supporting the program, as the lacrosse program really helped define my four years at Yale. No amount of work for the board will be able to measure up to what the program has done for me as a person. It’s been great to be able to contribute and remain a part of the organization. How and why do you stay connected with Yale athletics? I stay involved with Yale Athletics because being a member of the lacrosse team was such a huge part of my college experience. I learned so much from my teammates and coaches, and my time on the team has completely shaped the person I am today. I feel invested in the future of the program, as all alumni do, and the importance of maintaining the tradition of success. In order to stay connected, my former teammates and I try to make it back for a game every season. The kickoff dinner at the Yale Club, Lacrosse Alumni Day, the golf outing and Harvard-Yale are great excuses to catch up with old teammates and show your support for the program.

For many friends of Yale, a bequest can be a way to make a profound and lasting impact. A bequest made now can promote the future of Yale Athletics with little or no effect on your current resources. Bequests can be in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or other property. You can designate a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, a fixed percentage of your entire estate, or leave your residuary estate after providing for loved ones. Goodwin brings an experienced resume to Yale, having served as an assistant coach at Harvard, interim head coach at Dartmouth in 2004, associate head coach at San Jose State, and head coach at Simmons College and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Goodwin was a three-time AllAmerican at Bridgewater State.

Tony Reno Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football In January of this year, Tony Reno was named the 34th head coach of Yale Football. A former Yale assistant coach, Reno spent the last three seasons as the special teams coordinator and defensive secondary coach at Harvard, where he helped develop 10 All-Ivy and one AllAmerican players. Reno comes back to Yale after 15 years in the coaching ranks, including stints at Kings (Pa.) College, Worcester State, Yale and Harvard. A three-year starter at free safety at Worcester State, Reno is a defensive specialist, having served as defensive coordinator, defensive secondary leader, and secondary coach.

Jim Henry Robert J.H. Kiphuth Head Coach of Women’s Swimming and Diving Jim Henry, formerly the associate head coach of women’s swimming at Texas, was named the Head Coach of Women’s Swimming and Diving in June. Henry brings considerable experience, having spent the last six years at Texas, three years at the University of Denver, and four years at SMU. During his time at Texas, Henry’s teams had four top-ten NCAA finishes, won three Big 12 Conference championships, produced 44 AllAmericans and set 19 school records. “I want our swimmers to become better students, better athletes and better individuals,” Henry said. “Hopefully that will lead to the ultimate goal, which is to bring an Ivy League team championship back to Yale.”
