Mission, Philosophy, and Objectives

Mission

Philosophy and Objectives

Yale University offers its students a liberal education, one which has its focus on the intellectual and moral development of the individual, and which gives students a foundation for learning throughout their lives. Yale has long recognized that such an education is not fostered by its academic component alone. Part of it is constituted by those challenging and pleasurable experiences and extracurricular activities – like varsity and recreational athletics – that enable an individual to give fuller force to academic training.

Goals in Support of Yale Athletics Mission • Yale is committed to equal opportunity and seeks to attract exceptionally qualified students, coaches and staff of diverse backgrounds. • Learning how to strive to win, to compete with pride and honor, to make sacrifices, to persevere when all seems lost, and to develop a sense of obligation and responsibility for others are lessons that make athletics a school for accomplishment and character for the individual. • Aspiration and achievement in competitive athletic endeavor play a proportional role within any student’s school life. • Support of a wide range of extracurricular programs presents significant opportunities for contributions to the well-being of members of its community.

Competitive Excellence

• Each sport program to finish first in the Ivy League. • Prepare and maintain the athletics facilities and training equipment at the highest standard of Division I competition. • Utilize the Kiphuth Leadership Academy to train students and staff in the principles of leadership; provide increased nutritional and sports psychology counseling to students and staff. • Continue to provide Ivy League championship opportunities for club sports programs.

Fiscal Responsibility

• Explore additional initiatives for cost-effective and collective bidding/ purchasing. • Increase departmental awareness and identify areas of sustainability. Think Green.

Positive Work Environment

• Continue to provide avenues for staff involvement in all departmental goals, work environment improvements and general policies and procedures and encourage ideas for improvement. • Provide training and professional development opportunities for all staff.

Superior Customer Service

• Continue to expand media accessibility for varsity contests. • Professional, courteous, prompt, and effective communication with all visitors, callers, and fellow staff.

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, What a year! 2012-13 brought home multiple championships — Ivy Championships in Volleyball, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Ice Hockey, Co-ed Sailing, and a tournament championship in Men’s Lacrosse. In addition, our Co-ed Sailing and Men’s Hockey teams brought home NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. The excitement and energy the Men’s Hockey Frozen Four victory brought to the campus and Yale community throughout the world was spectacular. You can view photos of our Championship teams on the cover of this booklet. Our success, both on and off the field, exemplifies the essence of the Yale tradition and a commitment to integrity, sportsmanship, and excellence. The achievements featured in this annual review would not be possible without the support of all friends of Yale Athletics.

More than just a landmark year in athletic performance, 2012-13 marked a very special year for our fundraising efforts. Four new head coaching endowments were pledged and 12 new programmatic endowments were pledged – all while we reached our annual fundraising goal of $3 million for all of Yale Athletics. Enhancing the present while building for the future is what we strive for. While June 30, 2013 marked one of our strongest years in history – both on and off the field – our work here is not done! It is our partnerships with our sport Associations, the Ray Tompkins Associates and our incredible supporters that allow us to continue to provide a world-class experience for all of our current and future Bulldogs. In this document we unveil our Plan for Athletic Excellence, which will further hone our focus on a strategy that will allow us to endow the entire varsity sports operation, while ensuring our current needs are met. This plan will allow us to thrive regardless of the economic climate. In the coming fiscal year you will receive communications outlining these efforts and how you might assist through pledges for new endowments, gifts to existing endowments and each of our Sport Associations. Thank you again for all you do for Yale Athletics. I look forward to seeing you at a game at home or on the road this year. Go Bulldogs! Sincerely,

E

Senior Awards William Neely Mallory Award The William Neely Mallory Award is presented annually to a senior male student-athlete who represents the highest ideals of American sportsmanship and Yale tradition both on the field of play, and in life. In 2013, the award was presented to Andrew Miller of the Men’s Hockey team.

Andrew Miller Highlights

• Captain of the first Yale hockey team to win a national championship. • Two-time, firstteam All-ECAC pick who earned CCM All-America honors this season while compiling 18 goals and 41 points. • 114 assists place him atop the school’s career list, while his 156 points rank fifth at Yale. • Named 2012-13 Ivy League Player of the Year while also garnering ECAC Hockey Player of the Month for March/April • Signed a contract with the Edmonton Oilers a few days after the national championship.

Nellie Pratt Elliott Award The Nellie Pratt Elliott Award goes to the senior woman whose excellence in the field of athletics and in her life at Yale best represents the ideals of sportsmanship and Yale tradition. It is awarded in memory of Nellie Pratt Elliott, who was an assistant director of undergraduate admissions at Yale for 46 years. The 2013 recipient was Elizabeth Epstein of the Women’s Tennis team.

Elizabeth Epstein Highlights

• Three-time AllIvy selection and a two-time winner of the team’s Lisa Rosenblum Award, given to the most valuable player. • Team captain, unanimous pick for first team All-Ivy. • Posted a 26-9 overall record and was ranked as high as No. 42 nationally in singles. • First team All-Ivy recognition following her junior season. • Won the clinching match in Yale’s victory over Saint Mary’s in the NCAA Tournament. • In doubles, Epstein was a second team All-Ivy selection with partner Annie Sullivan. • Off the court, Epstein has been involved in New Haven Tennis Outreach, mentoring and teaching tennis to young children in the New Haven public school system.

Q & A: Andrew Miller WILLIAM NEELY MALLORY AWARD What is the best part about winning a National Championship? Winning a National Championship was an unbelievable experience that my teammates, coaches, fans, and school got to enjoy together. It was a goal that we had been striving to achieve for a long time, and the work that we did on and off the ice paid off in the most gratifying way possible. What advice do you have for aspiring hockey players? Enjoy everything you do and take advantage of every single opportunity that is given to you while having fun 100% of the time. What was it like playing in the Whale? When The Whale is packed to capacity, and people are standing three rows deep because there is no place to sit is an environment that is unparalleled in the ECAC and one of the best places in all of college hockey to play. We have hands down the best band in college hockey. The atmosphere is electric and sometimes it feels like the roof is about to blow off. 6

Thomas W. Ford ’42 Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award The Ford Award, given annually to the male and female studentathletes who have demonstrated their commitment to strengthening the relationship between Yale Athletics and the New Haven community, is named in honor of Thomas W. Sam Haig Highlights

• Volunteer for Squash Haven, working daily as both a tutor and a squash coach for more than 80 local children enrolled in the program. • As a volunteer for Yale Athletics Youth Days, Haig managed the barbecue lunch for more than 600 participants per year as Yale student-athletes worked with local children on sports skills twice per year. • Haig received the Yale squash team’s Harold K. How did you manage to be both an outstanding athlete and an outstanding student? It is difficult to balance a tough academic schedule, extracurricular research, and Division I athletic commitments; such is the beauty and challenge of Yale athletics! But navigating the balancing act enhances the reward of both; I would not be where I am today if not for Yale track and field. What is your favorite athletic memory? Sophomore year, Ivy League Outdoor Championships – an event steeped in history and tradition – was held at Yale. Even better, my final event was the 4x400 m relay, perhaps the most classic (and grueling) event in track and field. As I stood on the line ready to receive the baton, on my home track, with my best friends, I was struck by the moment. I felt so lucky to be one small part of the age-old tradition of Yale athletics, a tradition emphasizing teamwork, discipline, resilience, and camaraderie. The realization hit me, the world froze… and then time resumed, I took the baton, and ran as fast as I could.

Q & A: Heather May THOMAS W. FORD ’42 STUDENT-ATHLETE COMMUNITY OUTREACH AWARD What have you learned from being head of the Yale Athletics Student-Athlete Community Outreach Committee? As the president of the Yale Athletics Student-Athlete Community Outreach Committee, I learned how large and positive Yale’s impact is on the broader New Haven community. I have seen first-hand how important it is to both Yale students and faculty to reach out to others nearby; and that was the best part about my job, seeing how happy it made both Yale and the New Haven residents to come together. It is amazing how much time Yale students and faculty take out of their busy daily schedules to reach out, volunteer in the classroom, play sports games, and donate holiday gifts to those New Haven school students in need. What’s it like being on a nationally-ranked but less-known varsity sport? College sailing is a hidden gem. When I first came to Yale, I felt humbled to sail for one of the country’s top-ranked sailing teams. Yale sailing has produced student-athletes who became Olympic medalists or America’s Cup sailors. However, to most, the sport of sailing is foreign, and there is certainly a share of people who turn their heads and squint when I say the words “tack” or “jibe”. At the end of the day, though, I don’t rig my boat and leave the dock to gain more publicity; I do it because I love the sport and I love competing for Yale.

Capital Project: Renovated Weight Room The Brooks-Dwyer Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center received a dramatic renovation this year. Through the generosity of lead donors Kevin Genda ‘87 and Karen Yarasavage ‘87, along with David Schwartz ‘87 and Scott Wagner ‘92, the facility was upgraded with all new state-of-theart equipment and a turf sprint track through the center of the room. The new weight room allows for more teams to train at one time, easing the burden on student-athletes to find time to lift during their busy academic schedules. In addition, it allows our strength and conditioning staff to customize sport-specific training programs to maximize results on the field. Thank you to our incredible donors who made this enhancement possible — all of our student athletes and coaches will reap the benefits of this new space.

A Memorable Year for Yale Field Hockey and its Alumnae Association

Combining Resources to Grow Crew Endowments 2012–13 marked an amazing year for the Crew Association and the growth of their endowment. The Lightweight Crew alumni set an ambitious goal for 2012–13 — to endow the head coaching position through a grass roots campaign. The process began by merging existing endowments (started by Steve Flagg ‘57, Andy Bacas ‘80 and Alec Ellison ‘84) to create a nucleus fund for the initiative. Then an endowment committee began making calls to raise the $1.5 million necessary to name a head coach fund. Over 120 donors met the goal in June. From this point forward, the position will be known as the Y150 Alumni Head Coach of Lightweight Rowing.

On the women’s side, aiming to raise $400,000 for their 40th anniversary in the spring of 2014, the alumnae of Yale Crew surpassed that goal in less than a year and immediately boosted their goal to $500,000. Known as the “Drive our Future Fund: With Each Other, For Each Other,” this initiative was spearheaded by Winnie Nordell ‘88 and supported by a large group of volunteers. The gratifying response was due to an effective social media campaign and class challenge, with 47 alumni/ae and friends supporting the endeavor. The group is looking forward to celebrating the achievement of the $500,000 milestone by April 2014.

Congratulations, crews! Gifts can still be made to both funds by contacting Alison Cole ‘99 at alison.cole@yale.edu.

Generations of Yale field hockey players gathered in New Haven from October 19–21 for a unique celebration, as the Bulldogs recognized the 40th anniversary of field hockey at Yale. As the first female varsity sport at Yale, the team drew upon its rich history for a weekend filled with get-togethers, panel presentations, varsity games, an alumnae game, and a lively banquet which included many memories and a recognition of the 1980 and 2011 Ivy League championship teams. The night’s most emotional moment came when Coach Pamela Stuper acknowledged the parents of Caroline Thompson ‘02, Neil ‘63 and Kathy, who established an endowment for the program in memory of their daughter, who had been a popular field hockey captain when she was a student at Yale. In the spring of 2013, the Thompsons generously endowed the head field hockey coaching position, which will henceforth be known as the Caroline Thompson ‘02 Head Coach of Field Hockey.

One of the many activities that Yale Sport Associations support is out-of-region travel. During the spring of 2013, the field hockey team traveled to Barcelona, Spain, to play field hockey against local teams and learn about Spanish history and culture. The team won all of their games and visited many Spanish landmarks. The Yale Field Hockey Association, led by Lorraine Pratte Lewis ‘78 and Jan Colarusso Seeley ‘82, set a lofty goal of raising $40,000 a year for 5 years so that $200,000 in annual use funds will be made available by 2017 to help sustain excellence on and off the field. The Association is making great strides toward achieving that goal, raising over $100,000 in 2012–13.

REMEMBERING

Tim Taylor Men’s Hockey Coach, 1976–2006 Coach Taylor oversaw more wins than any head coach in the history of Yale Hockey (337-433-55). Taylor’s teams accomplished, among other feats: • one ECACHL title • six Ivy League Champions • 19 ECAC playoff teams • a pair of 20-win seasons Taylor received the Spencer Penrose Award in 1997-98, was a three-time ECAC Coach of the Year, and two-time New England Coach of the Year. He coached all six of Yale’s Hobey Baker Award finalists. The 1997-98 Yale team, predicted to finish 10th in the ECAC, took the conference regular-season championship and earned a berth in the school’s first NCAA Tournament since 1952. That squad set school records for overall and ECAC victories, shattered 16 team and individual records, beat defending national champion RPI twice, upset national finalist Harvard and climbed as high as No. 4 in the national rankings. It took a 3-2 double overtime loss to Cornell in a classic ECAC semifinal to stop the Elis.

Don Tonry

Men’s Gymnastics Coach and Physical Education Instructor, 1962-1984 A long-time Hamden, CT resident who grew up in New York City, Tonry was a gymnastics coach and a physical education instructor at Yale from 1962 to 1984 while also being a fellow in Calhoun College. During that time, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Southeastern University) and a Master of Science (Southern Connecticut State) while earning a reputation as an inspirational mentor to and leader of student-athletes. Under Tonry’s tutelage, Russell Mills won the 1964 national AAU title and the 1963 and 1964 NCAA gold medals in side horse. Tonry, whose wife, Barbara, has been the head coach of the Yale women’s gymnastics team since its inception in 1973, transformed the Yale Gymnastics Club into a varsity men’s team that competed from 1974 to 1980 and won three Ivy League championships. He was also Yale’s Associate Athletic Director of Physical Education and directed the first sports camp for Yale.

Yale Varsity Athletics Facts and Figures Total number of varsity teams: 35

The Ivy League model for athletics is the most expensive in the

nation. Only 13 teams are required to be recognized at the Division I level and every school in the Ivy League hosts more than 30. In addition, without the revenue provided by television contracts, bowl games, and high profile endorsements, the amount being invested by the Universities in the Ivy League is significantly more than schools in more high profile conferences.

Yale is committed to creating a world-class experience for 805 student-athletes on 35 varsity teams. This means access to state-ofthe-art facilities and equipment, an unparalleled coaching faculty, and opportunities to test their skills against top collegiate competition in their sport. As the landscape of Ivy League athletics becomes increasingly competitive, the financial support from the alumni and friends of Yale Athletics is paramount to achieving that mission. The economic downturn has affected budgets throughout the country and clearly here at Yale. To address the needs of today, along with planning for tomorrow, Yale University and Yale Athletics in partnership with our alumni and friends have introduced the Plan for Athletic Excellence to protect ourselves from fluctuations in the market so we can focus on winning championships.

Supporting Yale Athletics: Annual Giving

Supporting Yale Athletics: Endowment Giving

Yale Sport Associations

Fully endowing our athletic programs would provide us with the protection to thrive regardless of the economic climate. New programmatic and coaching endowments help to sustain success in perpetuity for our athletic programs. There are unlimited opportunities for donors to leave a lasting and meaningful legacy for their favorite Yale team(s). Establishing a new endowment fund or adding to an existing endowment allows you to ensure that our coaches and student-athletes have a consistent support base well into the future.

Every team at Yale is supported by a Sport Association. The Sport Associations are represented by a board of alumni that provide up-todate information about our programs, mentor our student athletes, and help sustain the proud and storied tradition of Athletics at Yale. In addition to raising money, the Associations enhance the experience

of current Yale players and establish a strong connection between Yale Athletics and the greater Yale community through such initiatives as career networking and job placement, and special events (including receptions, golf outings, and alumni/ae games).

Ray Tompkins Associates Athletic Directors Excellence Fund The RTA is a general, unrestricted fund that promotes excellence across all 35 varsity teams. It will be used at the discretion of the Athletic Director to ensure all sports, and the athletic department itself, will have

the resources necessary to operate at the highest levels. The fund will support the most urgent of needs within Yale Athletics.

Quick facts about the Ray Tompkins Associates Athletic Directors’ Excellence Fund • Used at discretion of Athletic Director to supplement the budgets of the most needy sports and for general Athletics needs, including:

• Varsity letter participation awards

• End of year student-athlete recognition events

• Captains Council leadership training sessions

• Coaches professional development

• Varsity athlete practice sweats

• Special one-time program costs associated with taking a team to the next level

Yale Men’s Hockey is the NCAA Division I National Champion! Achieving a NCAA Division I championship without athletic scholarships while maintaining the academic rigor required at Yale is extraordinary. Mens Hockey’s rise through the NCAA Tournament invigorated not just the campus, but the Yale community throughout the world. Yale Athletics created the Hockey Excellence Fund to provide alumni and fans who cheered the team on with a way to recognize this great achievement. This fund is being used to provide resources for items integral to winning championships that lie outside the budget model. This fund will enhance recruiting, help retain coaching faculty, and augment equipment services, ensuring Yale’s place at the top of collegiate hockey. The Excellence Fund functions as a long-term counterpart to the Hockey Association annual fund and can be added to every year. Alumni and Friends of Yale Hockey will be able to support the Excellence Fund in 2013-14. TOTAL RAISED FOR THE EXCELLENCE FUND IN 2012-13: $41,000

Head Coaching Endowments • A named coaching endowment can be established with a gift of $1.5 million – the same as a named professorship at Yale University • Funds from coaching endowments are used to recruit and retain the strongest coaching faculty in the Ivy League. • Coaching endowments are recognized any time that a coach’s names is used in the media, websites, stationery, and on personal email signature • Coaching endowments can be named in honor of a family, coach, team, or class – the possibilities are endless • Head Coaching endowments are recognized on individual plaques in the main lobby of Ray Tompkins House • Eighteen head coaching positions are currently endowed, representing 25 Yale teams

Programmatic Endowments • A named programmatic endowment can be established with a gift of $100,000 (payable over 5 years) • An endowment can be named in honor of a family, coach, team, class, or former student-athlete – the possibilities are endless • The spendable yield from a programmatic endowment is used to offset the annual operating costs of a given team, including competition travel, recruiting and equipment • Programmatic endowments are recognized on a group plaque in the main lobby of Ray Tompkins House

• Head coaching positions available for endowment include: Baseball, Heavyweight Crew, Women’s Crew, Men’s & Women’s Fencing, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Women’s Ice Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Gymnastics, Softball, and Volleyball

Unrestricted Endowments

Endowment Stewardship

Yale Athletics also benefits from two unrestricted endowments that promote excellence across all 35 varsity teams. The spendable yield from these funds are used at the discretion of the Athletic Director to ensure all sports, and the athletic department itself, will have the resources necessary to operate at the highest levels. These funds will support the most urgent of needs within Yale Athletics. WISER: Unrestricted endowment for women’s varsity teams and coaches RAY TOMPKINS ENDOWMENT: Unrestricted endowment for all varsity needs Gifts of any amount over $10,000 can be added to the principal of these two existing funds. Gifts of any amount over $10,000 can also be added to the principal of an existing endowment created with restricted support to a specific team.

• Endowments are provided annual stewardship reports from the University which include growth of the principal and the use of the spendable yield • Endowment funds are invested along with the larger Yale endowment and managed by Chief Investment Officer, David Swensen and his staff • Endowments are provided name recognition within the Yale Athletics Annual Review and specific sports newsletters • All donors who pledge a programmatic or coaching endowment receive passes to all Yale Athletics hospitality spaces, including the Kenney Center Champions Room (football), Schley Room (Hockey), and the Ivy Lounge (Basketball)

A Reinvigorated WISER Focuses on the Future WISER (Women’s Intercollegiate Sports Endowment and Resource) was established in 2003 by nine dedicated alumnae to provide a resource for women’s varsity sports. The endowment currently exceeds $1 million and is used to: • Enhance the competitive experience of women’s intercollegiate athletics at Yale. • Enhance the quality of training and competition across all women’s sports. • Create a community among alumnae and current female athletes to foster leadership. • Create a robust web site with news and networking capabilities

During 2012-13, WISER focused on clarifying its mission, creating a more formal governance structure and establishing future goals. After interviews with association leaders and coaches, multiple conference calls and face-to-face meetings in New York City and New Haven, the decision was made to focus each year on a limited set of objectives. The mission and organizational structure are intended to be sufficiently flexible to adjust to changing priorities.

The focus for 2013-14 includes using relationships and the power of the female athlete network to increase participation in individual sports associations, hosting small campus events for students and launching a media campaign. WISER board members are confident their organization is on its way to become an invaluable resource by creating a networking community for current student athletes and the close to 3700 women who have suited up as Yale athletes. Look for more ways to get involved as we create an old girl’s network and seek to celebrate the talents, voice and influence of Yale women athletes through all generations. 19

How to Give Reunion Giving A gift to Ray Tompkins Associates or any Yale sport Association can be credited to your reunion giving total, both individually and for your class. A pledge up to four years in advance of a 5-year reunion can be set aside in support of Yale Athletics. Please see yalebulldogs.com/information/alumni/associations/Reunion_Giving_FAQ.pdf for more information on reunion giving.

Giving Online It is fast and easy to give online. Visit the Yale Giving page at giving.yale.edu, then click on “Make a Gift Now.” Choose “Athletics” from the first drop down menu. You can then choose to give to Ray Tompkins Associates or to any of the sports Associations. Your gift will immediately go to that Association.

Giving via Mail Mail a check made payable to Yale University with your favorite team in the memo space on the check: Yale Sport Associations, PO Box 208216, New Haven, CT 06520

Recurring Credit Card Gift In addition to making a one-time gift to Yale Athletics, you can make equal monthly payments with the same tax-deductible benefits. This allows you to spread out your donation over the course of the fiscal year. Make giving automatic!

Planned Giving For many friends of Yale, a bequest can be a way to make a profound and lasting impact. A bequest made now can promote the future of Yale Athletics with little or no effect on your current resources. Bequests can be in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or other property. You can designate a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, a fixed percentage of your entire estate, or leave your residuary estate after providing for loved ones. For more information, go to yale.planyourlegacy.org.
