DARING ARTISTS. BOLD CHOIC I am thrilled to invite you to Yale Repertory Theatre’s 2014–15 season: two modern masterpieces and three brand new plays commissioned by Yale Rep offering a breathtaking diversity of emotions, experiences, and perspectives that reflect and celebrate our shared humanity. The season opens with a new production, which I will direct, of ARCADIA, the ravishingly romantic time-traveling masterpiece by Tom Stoppard, one of the most accomplished writers of the 20th and 21st centuries. OBIE Award winning resident director Liz Diamond, whose Yale Rep credits include her acclaimed production of The Winter’s Tale, returns with Bertolt Brecht’s theatrical, lyrical, and bitingly satiric THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE. As we celebrate the continued success of recent Yale Rep-commissioned plays such as Amy Herzog’s Belleville, David Adjmi’s Marie Antoinette, and Will Eno’s The Realistic Joneses, which just opened on Broadway, our 2014–15 season features the world premieres of extraordinary new plays by three singular voices in the American theatre.
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, whose provocative and explosively funny plays include the recent critically acclaimed Off-Broadway production of Appropriate, makes his Yale Rep debut with WAR. Pulitzer Prize finalist Danai Gurira— author of Eclipsed and In the Continuum, co-written with Nikkole Salter—returns with her intergenerational comedy-drama, FAMILIAR. Sheila Callaghan, profiled by Marie Claire as one of “18 Women Who Are Changing the World,” makes her own Yale Rep debut with the romantic comedy, ELEVADA, a 2014 finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. In addition to these five magnificent plays, which comprise our subscription series, Yale Rep will also present three unique opportunities to experience remarkable performances from around the world as part of our annual NO BOUNDARIES series. Yale Rep subscribers will receive priority booking for these limited engagements, which will be announced in the fall. Please join us! Sincerely,
James Bundy Artistic Director

Amidst illicit passions and
professional rivalries on an English country estate, a brilliant young pupil proposes a startling scientific theory well beyond her own comprehension. More than 200 years later, two academic adversaries try to piece together puzzling clues from the past in their quest for an elusive truth. Arcadia is an achingly romantic and heartbreakingly funny waltz of the mind and the body, dancing across centuries.

Tensions escalate between Tate and Joanne
at the hospital bedside of their comatose mother. As they attack each other’s smallest words and biggest choices, they are ambushed by two strangers who make a shocking claim about their grandfather’s WWII tour of duty. War is a wildly provocative, bracingly funny, and all-toohuman portrait of a family navigating the landmines of the past as they try to broker peace with each other—and themselves—in the present.

In a snowy Midwestern suburb,
Marvelous and Donald are preparing for the marriage of their eldest daughter. Clashes erupt within the family when the first-generation American bride-to-be insists on observing a traditional Zimbabwean wedding ritual. Familiar is a richly funny and deeply moving new play about the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters, sisters, wives and husbands— the customs they keep, and the secrets they keep buried.
“Familiar is about love, marriage, how cultural identity gets passed on or lost through generations, how crazy family members can make each other—and just
how overflowing the love is even amidst all the madness.”

DANAI GURIRA, PLAYWRIGHT “We don’t often see stories of current first generation Americans—children whose parents speak differently, perhaps completely different languages, whose identity is complex and multinational. I believe that
cultural specificity in storytelling can reveal to us how universally familiar we all are.”

“Change the world: BERTOLT BRECHT, PLAYWRIGHT
In the war-torn country of Grusinia,
a young servant named Grusha rescues the abandoned baby of a deposed Governor and raises him as her own. Years later, the ruler’s wife returns to reclaim her child—and the two mothers bring their case before a cynical, battle-weary judge. An epic fable set against the harrowing backdrop of civil war, The Caucasian Chalk Circle puts the competing claims of law and justice, of blood and love, to the ultimate test.
