A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the world premiere of Belleville! I am thrilled that Yale Rep audiences are the first to experience this artful new play by Amy Herzog, performed by an accomplished company of actors under the direction of Anne Kauffman, who so beautifully staged the musical We Have Always Lived in the Castle last year. Belleville was commissioned by Yale Rep and developed through the Yale Center for New Theatre, established in 2008 to support the creation of new plays and musicals. To date, the Center has underwritten the work of nearly three dozen commissioned theatre artists, as well as productions of nine new plays at Yale Rep and other not-for-profit theatres across the country. (You can learn more about the Yale Center for New Theatre on page 24 and in the “About Yale Rep” section of our website: yalerep.org.) This is only the start of what I hope will be a long relationship between our theatre and Amy Herzog, who is already under commission to write another new play for Yale Rep. Belleville is the first of three world premieres at Yale Rep this season. If you come to our theatre frequently, you may know already that our history is perhaps most vividly defined by the production of new work by playwrights who have gone on to make indelible contributions to the American theatre. August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, Athol Fugard, Sarah Ruhl, and Christopher Durang are just a few of the writers who have premiered plays here at Yale on their path to national and international recognition. Playwrights Christina Anderson and Will Eno, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Thom Pain (based on nothing), will join Amy Herzog on that roster with the premieres of their new plays, Good Goods and The Realistic Joneses, respectively. In addition, director Christopher Bayes and actor Steven Epp, the seriously funny guys behind 2010’s uproarious The Servant of Two Masters, are coming back to Yale with their new adaptation of Molière’s rambunctious farce, A Doctor in Spite of Himself. And OBIE Award-winning Resident Director Liz Diamond will stage The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s surprising tale of blinding jealousy and forgiveness. I hope you’ll join us again soon. In fact, it’s not too late to subscribe to Yale Rep this season. You can even apply the cost of today’s admission to one of our convenient and affordable ticket packages, which start at just $30 per show—$10 for students! Thank you for being here. Your attendance lends critical energy and meaning to the artists’ expression—this is blazingly clear to me as I read your thoughtful and impassioned e-mails about your experience here at the Rep. (Address: james.bundy@yale.edu.) I look forward to hearing what you think and feel about Belleville, and to your helping us spread the good word about the production! Gratefully yours,
James Bundy Artistic Director

A Belleville on the Map La “ville” de Belleville Americans have an affinity for Belleville—which means “beautiful city”— as the towns in New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, and Wisconsin that share the Parisian neighborhood’s name seem to imply. However, most Americans know little about the French original; until recently, it’s barely caused a blip on the typical tourist’s radar. Film buffs may connect the place with the 2003 animated movie The Triplets of Belleville or remember it as the backdrop to the 1956 classic The Red Balloon. Music aficionados may recognize Belleville as the humble birthplace of the immortal chanteuse Edith Piaf. But the reality of Belleville, a residential neighborhood in northeastern Paris, does not always match an American’s highest Parisian fantasies. It’s neither a ville, but an area at the intersection of the 10th, 11th, 19th, and 20th arrondissements (districts), nor can it lay claim to the traditional idea of belle that we associate with the elegant architecture of Paris. Moreover, nomenclature notwithstanding, all is not always beautiful in this nook of the city. While it has its aging charm and iconic views of the
10
and in the Imagination Parisian skyline and La Tour Eiffel, graffiti covers its streets, and many Parisians scoff that Belleville is off-the-beaten path and not a desirable destination. But Belleville’s “remoteness” is largely psychic: the neighborhood is just a stone’s throw away from the city center. Hop on the 11 train at Châtelet in the heart of Paris, ride it for ten minutes and you alight at la station de Belleville. When you emerge from le métro, you see not only rows of quaint pâtisseries peddling baguettes, but Chinese restaurants with Paris’s best dim sum. The neighborhood can be tricky to navigate, comprised of a maze of small streets that are a far cry from the wide boulevards that dominate the rest of Paris. But Belleville’s narrow roads are lined with treasures: stores, restaurants, and bookshops selling goods from all over the world. The diverse population in the streets reflects these distant locales, and an array of languages floats through the air. In addition, you’ll stumble across avant garde art galleries, trendy cafes and restaurants, and new music venues created from repurposed warehouses and broken-down storefronts.

Les Bellevilloises Belleville’s longstanding openness to new residents has made it a vibrant hotbed of countercultural activity. Independent of Paris until 1860, it was originally a rural wine-making village, famous for its taverns and its rebellious residents who fought on behalf of Paris Commune government in 1871. As it urbanized, Belleville retained its working class and somewhat chaotic character. With the twentieth century came waves of foreign immigrants, often seeking safety from persecution. Greeks and Armenians arrived in the 1920s, Eastern European Jews in the 1930s, Algerians and Tunisians in the 1960s, and, most recently, the Chinese. Natives of other countries, including Poland, the French West Indies, and Senegal, have also shaped what it means to be a Bellevilloise. By the late 1980s, the Parisian bohemian bourgeois, known as the bobos, began to trickle into the neighborhood in search of lower rents and new venues for making and showing art. At this time, Belleville was still rough around the edges. A 1988 New York Times Travel article introduced American readers to this corner of Paris, with a stern warning: “One should not visit Belleville with cameras, expensive watches, or jewelry in evidence. It is better to dress modestly and keep a low profile.” Yet pickpockets and petty crime did not deter young artsy types from setting up camp amongst the diverse Bellevilloises—in fact, for them the danger seemed to part of the area’s charm—and in the last few years, the bobo population of Belleville has surged. The ominous warnings of the past few decades have softened as more of the bobo crowd flaunt their fashionforward tastes without harm.

Belleville aujourd’hui Unlike other Parisian neighborhoods whose demographics have been completely changed by gentrification, this part of Paris has kept its diverse inhabitants, and in general harmony, too. No one has been forced out of Belleville due to skyrocketing rents, thanks to plentiful public housing in the neighborhood. The peace in Belleville seems singular compared to the riots that have surfaced in Paris’s suburbs— les banlieues—in recent years. Indeed, for all its jumble of ethnicities, its scruffiness, and relative obscurity to toursists, Belleville has become a hidden respite in Paris for its residents, and those who love its specific charms find a permanent and welcome home here. —AMY BORATKO AND ALEX RIPP PRODUCTION DRAMATURGS

YALE CENTER FOR NEW THEATRE YALE REPERTORY THEATRE is dedicated to the production of new plays and bold interpretations of classics and has produced well over 100 premieres—including two Pulitzer Prize winners and four other nominated finalists—by emerging and established playwrights. Eleven Yale Rep productions have advanced to Broadway, garnering more than 40 Tony Award nominations and eight Tony Awards. Yale Rep is also the recipient of the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. Professional assignments at Yale Repertory Theatre are integral components of the program at Yale School of Drama, the nation’s leading graduate theatre training conservatory. Established in 2008, the YALE CENTER FOR NEW THEATRE is an artist-driven initiative that devotes major resources to the commissioning, development, and production of new plays and musicals at Yale Rep and across the country. A key component of the Center’s work is the support of productions of Yale-commissioned works at theatres other than Yale Rep. The Center also facilitates residencies of playwrights and composers at Yale School of Drama. To date, the Yale Center for New Theatre has supported the work of more than thirty commissioned artists as well as the world premieres and subsequent productions of nine new American plays and musicals—including this season’s Belleville by Amy Herzog, Good Goods by Christina Anderson, and The Realistic Joneses by Will Eno. Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground, adapted by Bill Camp and Robert Woodruff, was the first commissioned play supported by the Center to receive its world premiere at Yale Rep. In 2010, Notes had its West Coast premiere at La Jolla Playhouse and its New York premiere at Theatre for a New Audience, in association with the Baryshnikov Arts Center. The Center also supported the world premiere co-production of Rinne Groff’s Compulsion at Yale Rep, Berkeley Rep, and The Public Theater—as well as the world premiere of the Yale-commissioned On the Levee by Marcus Gardley, Todd Almond, and Lear deBessonet at Lincoln Center Theater’s LCT3.
COMMISSIONED ARTISTS David Adjmi, Todd Almond, Hilary Bell, Adam Bock, Bill Camp, Lear deBessonet, Will Eno, Marcus Gardley, Matt Gould, Kirsten Greenidge, Danai Gurira, Ann Marie Healy, Amy Herzog, Naomi Iizuka, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Aditi Brennan Kapil, Carson Kreitzer, Dan LeFranc, Elizabeth Meriwether, Scott Murphy, Julie Marie Myatt, David LeFort Nugent, Lina Patel, Jay Reiss, Sarah Ruhl, Octavio Solis, Lucy Thurber, Alice Tuan, Paula Vogel, Kathryn Walat, Anne Washburn, Marisa Wegrzyn, and Robert Woodruff
