SETTING Rural Andalusia, Spain, 1920s THERE WILL BE ONE TEN-MINUTE INTERMISSION. 6
Music from the Deep In August, 1936, outside Viznar, a village five miles from Granada, Spain, Federico García Lorca was tied to an olive tree, shot, and left in a ditch. The famed poet and playwright was a leftwing homosexual, so was a natural target of the newly instated Fascist regime under Francisco Franco. His body has never been found. A year before his death, Lorca wrote, “The Gitano is the loftiest, most profound and aristocratic element of my country, the most deeply representative of its mode, the very keeper of the glowing embers, blood, and alphabet of Andalusian and universal truth.” Gitano mythology and its performance mode, flamenco, permeate Lorca’s art. Throughout his works, we see images which form a symbology of rural Andalusian religion— knives, horses, the moon—and we hear t h e “d e e p so n g ,” the flamenco ballad characterized by death and anguish, sung by the Gitano cantaor, who is the voice of his persecuted, nomadic race, and the keeper of its myths. 7
Myth demands ritual, and the cante jondo is the quintessential ritual of flamenco. Symbolism, style, characters, and themes combine to create this deep song of rapturous suffering which sets the immediate sensuality of life against the inevitability of mortality. The performer of cantao jondo is not simply singing about his suffering, however, neither is he affecting a style which sounds like he is suffering. Rather, his song is his suffering. Cantaores often boast of tasting their own blood. Merely read, Blood Wedding is so sensual you can almost taste it, a feeling redoubled in a blaze of the senses when those words are embodied by actors on stage. It is Lorca’s cante jondo: a deep song of beauty and sorrow sung by the voice of his people. The artist lies fo rg o t t e n i n a n unmarked grave, but we can take solace from the fact that Lorca’s poetry sings to eternity, and of life everlasting. —JOSH GOULDING, PRODUCTION DRAMATURG STATUE OF FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA IN THE PLAZA DE SANTA ANA IN MADRID BY JULIO LÓPEZ HERNÁNDEZ, 1986.
