A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I am thrilled that Yale Rep audiences are the first to experience this beautiful new play by Kirsten Greenidge. And I am equally delighted to present this fine company of actors, including Ella Joyce, who made her Yale Rep debut twenty years ago in the world premiere of August Wilson’s Two Trains Running, and to welcome back Resident Director Evan Yionoulis.
Welcome to the world premiere of Bossa Nova!
If you come here frequently, you may know already that our 45year history is perhaps most vividly defined by the large-scale production of new work by playwrights who have gone on to make indelible contributions to the American theatre. August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, Athol Fugard, Sarah Ruhl, and Christopher Durang are just a few of the writers who have premiered plays here at Yale on their path to national and international recognition. Your attendance here today is a meaningful expression of support for our commitment to writers like Kirsten Greenidge, whose incisive and moving plays, many of which explore how race, class, and culture intersect in the United States, have been produced in Boston, Louisville, and San Francisco. This production of Bossa Nova is only the start of what I hope will be a long relationship between Kirsten and our theatre: she is under commission to write a new play for Yale Rep. Next up in our season, beginning in January, is August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, directed by Liesl Tommy, who helmed last year’s Eclipsed by Danai Gurira. This will be the first revival of an August Wilson play in our theatre’s history: The Piano Lesson, which received the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, had its world premiere at Yale Rep in 1987. It returns triumphant nearly 25 years later, having been performed on Broadway and around the world (and filmed for television), its author now universally recognized as one of the most important voices in the world theatre canon. There are several easy and affordable ways for you to enjoy all three remaining productions of the season, which also includes Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet directed by Shana Cooper and the U.S. premiere of Ingmar Bergman’s Autumn Sonata directed by Robert Woodruff, whose acclaimed Yale Rep production of Notes from Underground was recently seen on both the West Coast and in New York. You can even apply the cost of today’s ticket to our new 4-play subscription and not miss a single show! Thank you again for being here today. As always, I look forward to receiving your feedback at james.bundy@yale.edu. Your thoughtful comments are one of the best measurements of how we’re doing, and they are greatly appreciated. See you in 2011! Sincerely,
James Bundy Artistic Director

1. MontgoMery, and greensboro, and LittLe rock (2:49)
Magnus ustus, literally “big fire,” is the pagan celebration of what Americans call “Indian summer.” The British “St. Martin’s Summer” refers to the saint’s feast day, November 11.
3. ah, Magnus ustus! (that shouLd be st. Martin’s day to you.) (3:36)
Along with black leather jackets and black pants, the black beret was part of the uniform adopted by the Black Panthers, a revolutionary organization in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 70s. Led by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, the Panthers began in Oakland, California, but blazed onto the international scene when U.S. Olympians Tommy Smith and John Carlos gave their signature salute, raising their fists in the air during a medal ceremony at the 1968 Summer Games.

4. dashikis (2:57)
A dashiki is a colorful, loose-fitting shirt of West African origin, popular in the U.S. in the late 1960s, and representing black Americans’ pride in their African heritage.
5. this tuning in and dropping out business (5:45)
LSD proponent Timothy Leary coined the phrase “tune in, turn on, drop out” in 1965 to describe the mind-expanding effects of using the drug. It quickly became shorthand for a countercultural worldview.
6. dixie peach (so your kitchen won’t spread) (4:14)
Dixie Peach pomade, a hair dressing marketed to African Americans, was popular in the 1940s through the 1960s. The “kitchen” is the hair just above the neck, which easily tangles and develops knots.

Ahh, to be Dee! Dee is young, Dee is gifted, and Dee is . . . blank. Sometimes a tablet for her mother to inscribe with axioms of etiquette and race pride, sometimes an empty slate for her history teacher to chalk up with visions of primitivism and clichéd countercultural slogans, Dee struggles to take hold of her own narrative. She may be fed up with Lady’s world of cotillions and league lunches, but does this damsel really need a white knight with the three musketeers, ’Trane, Bird, and Dizz, to save her?
In Lady Paradis, name and nature meet. Lady strives for correctness in all things. From a poor virginia childhood, she has risen to the top of Boston’s black society, and all she wants to give Dee and Jane is everything she has had to claw and scrape for for herself: an advantageous marriage, a beautiful garden, a flawless reputation, and poise—but nothing else—coming out her pores. Dee, as a typical daughter, wants none of it, so Lady sings the Sharper than a Serpent’s Tooth Blues.
If only the world understood him, if only the man—or the nuns—appreciated him! St. Ursula’s loose-cannon history teacher, micheal wants to expand minds, not just impart facts. he doesn’t want students kowtowing to “gods on high.” After school, the sounds of jazz records escape from behind micheal’s office door, while on weekends he tries to work up the courage to pick up his sax. In Dee, micheal sees the youth, fearlessness, and connection to black culture he wishes were his, and he wants to release her from the insipidity of the bossa nova to the vitality of jazz.

Life and happiness are enviably synonymous for 9-year-old Jane. She wants just two things: to catch August fireflies with Dee and to go shopping for her brand-new school uniform. As she hopscotches through the end of summer, her future becomes a point of contention between Lady and Dee, who tries like mad to make sure the second verse isn’t the same as the first.
Idol worship can be a form of tyranny. Dee’s daffy, demanding, adoring roommate Grace is the other outsider at St. Ursula’s: a scholarship girl from Southie. Grace is bracing herself against the inevitability of class pressure and financial hardship by using her time in high school to identify and develop her “talent.” If she’s going to end up poor, a life of bohemianism in Greenwich village is better than a cold convent any day of the week. She and Dee will be two Sophisticated Ladies!
Don’t fall in love with a dreamer. Joan and Dee have more in common than either is willing to admit: daughters of privilege, both have upset their parents’ expectations. A Boston Brahmin with a romantic streak, Joan was drawn to micheal’s free spirit—but after years of marriage, she’s finally forced to sort out why her life hasn’t turned out as she’d planned.

AbOuT YALE REP Yale Repertory Theatre is dedicated to the production of new plays and bold interpretations of classics and has produced well over 100 premieres—including two Pulitzer Prize winners and four other nominated finalists—by emerging and established playwrights. Eleven Yale Rep productions have advanced to Broadway, garnering more than 40 Tony Award nominations and eight Tony Awards. Yale Rep is also the recipient of the Tony Award for outstanding Regional Theatre. Professional assignments at Yale Repertory Theatre are integral components of the program at Yale School of Drama, the nation’s leading graduate theatre training conservatory.
YALE CENTER FOR NEw THEATRE Established in 2008, the Yale Center for New Theatre is an artist-driven initiative that devotes major resources to the commissioning, development, and production of new plays and musicals at Yale Rep and across the country. A key component of the Center’s work is the support of productions of Yale-commissioned works at theatres other than Yale Rep—over the next four years, over $600,000 will be committed to this project. The Yale Center for New Theatre also facilitates residencies of playwrights and composers at Yale School of Drama. To date, the Yale Center for New Theatre has supported the work of more than two dozen commissioned artists as well as the world premieres and subsequent productions of six new American plays and musicals. Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground, adapted by Bill Camp and Robert Woodruff, was the first commissioned play supported by the Yale Center for New Theatre to receive its world premiere at Yale Rep. This fall, Notes had its West Coast premiere at La Jolla Playhouse and its New York premiere at Theatre for a New Audience, in association with the Baryshnikov Arts Center, with further support from the Center. The Yale Center for New Theatre has also supported Yale Rep’s world premiere productions of the musical PoP! by maggie-Kate Coleman and Anna K. Jacobs; Compulsion by Rinne Groff, co-produced with The Public Theater and Berkeley Repertory Theatre, both of which will present the play this season; the Yale-commissioned musical We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Adam Bock and Todd Almond; and Bossa Nova by Kirsten Greenidge. Additionally, the Center has supported the world premiere of the Yale-commissioned on the Levee by marcus Gardley, Todd Almond, and Lear deBessonet at Lincoln Center Theater’s LCT3.
