A NOTE FROM THE CAB LEADERSHIP
Welcome back to Yale Cabaret for S’MORES by Augustine Lorrie. We are excited to showcase the work of Augustine, a 4th year actor, as our FINAL show of Season Sandbox! Augustine’s passion for producing work at Yale Cabaret brings their journey full circle with this show a month before their graduation. You may know Augustine’s work from CAB 55’s Four Meddling Kids and One Dumb Dog, CAB 54’s The Hedgehog’s Dilemma, and their Dragaret performances CAB 53 through CAB 56.
We set out this year to bring you a season that encompasses as many avenues of theater-making as possible. Our goal was to highlight the brilliance of our colleagues here at the school, both inside and outside their disciplines. We aimed to push the limits of our humble underground space, and we’ve had the privilege of exploring it all with you. Thank you for helping artists explore, experiment, and grow with us.
Thank you for supporting Season Sandbox. We hope you’ll continue coming back to support Yale Cabaret seasons to come. Out of the box and into our Sandbox one last time!

As we all emerge from the desolate isolation of winter, I look forward to the moment I can wander into the wilderness for a weekend to reconnect with myself and the natural world around me. Truthfully, the goal is always to escape “the real world”.
On this quiet night in the Mount Shasta wilderness, our two characters coincidentally find themselves in the woods for this very purpose – a desire to escape and heal. While Henry and Prima had not intended to enter these woods alone, they have arrived at this campsite without the company of others, and with no intention to fill that gap.
In S’MORES, Augustine Lorrie captures the metamorphosis of grief into the beginnings of healing when two characters seeking isolation instead find deep connections within the vast wilderness. Whether or not we seek connection, the natural world finds a way to give us what we need, regardless of who we are. Healing comes from the land, the water, and our community.
Outdoor recreation has historically been exclusively accessible to white, cis, straight, middle-class Americans.
Our story takes place in the indigenous homelands of the Siletz Indians, Shasta, Modoc, Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla, Grande Ronde, and Klamath people. The generations of indigenous land maintenance and care are the reason that anyone can enjoy the beautiful wilderness in the United States. Nationwide movements such as LANDBACK advocate for indigenous reclamation of the land.
Community-centered outdoor recreation groups such as Next 100 Coalition, and The Venture Out Project continue to fight for a wider breadth of inclusivity and diversity in the American Wilderness.
Please consider donating to LANDBACK, Next 100 Coalition, and The Venture Out Project to continue protecting our land and expanding access to and diversity in outdoor recreation.

MISSION STATEMENT
Sandbox by definition, is “a shallow box in the ground partly filled with sand for children to play in”. We hope to create a similar sense of curiosity and playfulness, allowing artists to access creativity only possible when given the opportunity to dig and unearth treasures within themselves. Our season will focus on performance arts as a whole, not just script-based plays or musicals, it’s open to ALL. We aim to look at collaborators as they are, without limiting them to the role they hold within the DGSD community. We believe in a theater without labels, where artists are not limited by the hats they wear, but by the experience they bring into the room with them. As a collective, we will create theater that continues to reshape our ever-changing view on the world.
OUR SANDBOX IS...
A Celebration of Ideas: A place where no ideas are bad ideas
Experimental: A space to try, fail, learn, and grow as a community
A Resource: A pool of combined knowledge and artistry
An Outlet: Magnifying unheard voices and underrepresented stories
A Continuum: An application of skills learned
Our Sandbox is a place where you can make your wildest dreams come true.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The state of Connecticut and Yale University occupy the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Mohegan, Mashantucket Pequot, Eastern Pequot, Schaghticoke, Golden Hill Paugussett, Niantic, Quinnipiac, and other Algonquian speaking peoples. We honor and respect their continued relationship with and stewardship of this land, and we acknowledge that Yale University, Yale Cabaret, and those affiliated have benefited from the oppression of these Nations.
LABOR ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Yale University does not exist independently from the centuries of forced labor and economic extraction of enslaved people, primarily of African descent, on which this country was built. We are indebted to their labor and their unwilling sacrifice, and we must acknowledge the ongoing violence inflicted on Black and brown people and the resulting impact and generational trauma still felt today.
