2018–19 SEASON

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRITING CHAIR Hello, It is my duty and honor as Chair of the Playwriting Department to welcome you to the Carlotta Festival of New Plays at Yale School of Drama. Traditionally, this decade-old festival is a culmination of practice for three emerging writers. In keeping with that tradition, our three graduating playwrights have engaged with dynamic directors, technicians, designers, dramaturgs, stage managers, actors, and theater managers—all fellow artists in training at the School of Drama—to arrive at this moment. This year’s class of playwrights—Jeremy O. Harris, Alex Lubischer, and Christopher Gabriel Núñez—challenge the traditional Carlotta confines with three innovative theatrical works that encapsulate present-future life as it currently unfolds in the halls of some of our most august institutions in YELL; in the soybean fields of the American heartland in Pivot; and in eucalyptusscented walk-ups in ‘the city’ in LOCUSTS. These three fearless writers have developed their works across the country, in many mediums, while immersed in a practical learning environment here at the School. The dexterous works you are about to witness are not the culmination of their endeavors, but a period—a pause, a catching of breath— before they plunge deeper, further into a world that will surely be shaped by their unique voices. I am grateful to share this moment with you as we celebrate Alex, Chris, and Jeremy, and wish them well as they move into the next phase of their exciting careers. Most Sincerely,

Tarell Alvin McCraney Chair, Playwriting Department

Nothing to Fear but Academic Probation: Two Notes from Two Dramaturgs I had the peculiar experience The playwright asked me to speak to the “white” parts of his psyche. I started to sweat as I began to type this! Maybe his obsession with experimental theater and dance in New York City? That’s pretty “white”, right?: The Wooster Group, Sarah Michelson, Richard Maxwell, Ann Liv Young. Pina Bausch worked in Germany, but I’m not sure how he feels about her work. I know he loves knowing about her. Anyway—for those white artists the rehearsal process has a haunting presence in the final performance. The most valuable lesson I learned in the rehearsal room for this play is that, for some, the “N-Word” means “nipple.” —@mischabreslin

of learning to write on a desk that was the same color as the back of my hand. In such springlike moments of juvenile revelry, when drawing and repeating the unending spirals of a cursive “e” felt like minor eternities and outsized accomplishments, the inability to distinguish between my skin and the gnarled trunk or bark or hard beige acetate of the regulation writing desk was cause for quiet rapture. These were personal moments, mysteries for one. And yet, writing, even in the most mechanical sense, is selfdissecting: As if letters and words and signs were the gateway to some grand introspective rush—as a ground stone becomes porous through friction. The pencil could slice right through me. One true thing about higher education is that the further you go up the ivory tower the farther you get from your school desk. —@mauta.man

I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one but I give myself to it. —RILKE’S BOOK OF HOURS: BOOK ONE: 1, 2 Outsiders to Alex Lubischer’s small Nebraskan farming community of the play ask, “what’s a pivot?” The van Acrens, local landowners, explain patiently: It’s an irrigator; it walks around the fields in a circle watering the crops, pulling from an underground aquifer. Pivots create circles of growth in an otherwise dusty expanse, making U.S. agriculture possible in the Plains. One of these machines changes everything for the van Acren family. In Pivot, characters are grappling with belonging and grief—stuck between restrained midwestern codes of behavior and a shocking tragedy that calls for outsized emotions. Decorum acts as the motor of this community—but following a tragedy, expectations for farming, grieving, and celebrating have to be reconceived. What does the future look like now? What does it mean to belong after the world you knew unexpectedly pivots?

OPEN. EVERY. CAGE. STARS AND BARS In 1973, the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals found that “the prison, the reformatory, and the jail have achieved only a shocking record of failure. There is overwhelming evidence that these institutions create crime rather than prevent it.” Despite the Commission’s recommendation that we overhaul the system, and the immense humanitarian and economic cost of maintaining jails, U.S. government administrations from from Nixon’s to Clinton’s found it politically expedient to be “tough on crime.” The resultant crackdown, epitomized by the War on Drugs, increased the prison population 500 percent and left the U.S. with the highest incarceration rate in the world: 655 for every 100,000. The most recent Prison Policy Initiative report found that nearly 2.3 million people—a disproportionate number of them black men—are currently being held in state and federal prisons, local jails, and other detention facilities that inflict appalling conditions on their inmates.

BEYOND BARS Organizations across the country—such as Common Justice in New York City and the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice—combat our societal instinct toward punishment by advocating restorative justice instead: systems that require restitution and accountability without prison sentences. Victims face offenders and have a say in their redress; it might be monetary compensation, community service, rehab, re-commitment to education, or anything else the participants and organization deem appropriate. By addressing the root causes of crime—poverty, lack of education and opportunity, estrangement from community, among others—such programs have remarkable success rates, with some reporting that as few as seven percent recidivism— compared to an average of two-thirds or 67 percent of jailed offenders.

The Benjamin Mordecai III Production Fund, established by a

graduate of the School, honors the memory of the Tony Award-winning producer who served as Associate Dean and Chair of the Theater Management Department at Yale School of Drama from 1993 until his death in 2005. During his tenure as Yale Rep’s Managing Director alongside Dean/Artistic Director Lloyd Richards, 1982–1993, he developed a model of professional producing that changed the course of new play development in the American theatre. His 25 Broadway credits included Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, as well as work by Anna Deavere Smith, Athol Fugard, David Henry Hwang, Terrence McNally, Robert Schenkkan, and perhaps most significantly August Wilson, with whom he collaborated on each of the ten plays in the epic 20th Century Cycle.

Carlotta Monterey, the widow of Eugene O’Neill, chose Yale University Press as the publisher of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. It is written on the copyright page of the first paperback edition that the proceeds from its publication are to go to playwriting at Yale University. Thank you, Carlotta.
