The curtain rises and we see the theatre within the theatre within the theatre within the theatre. The curtain falls. The curtain rises and we see the rehearsal of the rehearsal of the rehearsal of the rehearsal. The curtain falls. What’s the name of the piece? —CUQUI JEREZ
The Neverstarting Story is a project in collaboration among Amaia Urra, Cristina Blanco, María Jerez, and Cuqui Jerez, four independent artists who work in a borderland between choreography, performance, video, and theatre. They insist that their work is not about mixing these disciplines but trying to generate a new field that slides “in between.” In this project they have looked for a way to collaborate without arriving at consensus, that is to say, keeping independence inside itself. The starting point was common material and questions that had been developed on the principle that ideas are not property. Finally they decided to accompany each other in four different directions, proposed by each of them. The result of these four explorations are two performances: The Set Up by Cristina Blanco and The Rehearsal by Cuqui Jerez; one film: The Movie by María Jerez; one video installation: The Thing by Amaia Urra; and Cinthy Tuloh, a short collaborative film.

She then studied contemporary dance and theatre in Spain, where she has performed in projects that play with the boundaries between dance, acting, cinema, and performance. Her desire to interrogate theatrical conventions led to her first solo piece, ID, which was performed during the 2010 In-Presentable Festival in Madrid. In 2011 she assisted in the direction of Comedia y Sueño, based on texts by Lorca and Shakespeare, conceived by J.C. Corazza. She is now collaborating with Cuqui Jerez on Crocodiles and Alligators. As a teacher she searches for projects that use the body as a way of knowledge and social exchange, including performances of Rodando in the streets of Madrid or A ciegas with blind participants. info@ismeniespejel.com

THE WORLD PERFORMANCE PROJECT (WPP) promotes research in performance studies across departments at Yale. An interdiscipline that draws from the arts, humanities, and human sciences (theater, drama, dance, visual arts, speech, linguistics, anthropology, sociology), performance studies defines as its objects cultural performances of all kinds, from theatrical presentations to rites of passage and expands its frontiers anywhere significant performances are likely to take place, from Yorubaland to Disneyland. Working in partnership with departments and programs throughout the university, WPP presents performances, workshops, lectures, and symposia with artists and scholars working in a spectrum of performance forms. Through these events, WPP fosters teaching, research, and publication on performance-related topics. Originally established with funding provided by a Distinguished Achievement Award granted to Joseph Roach, Sterling Professor of Theater, by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, WPP is affiliated with the Yale College Theater Studies Program and the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale.
