An Entertainment devised by Emlyn Williams from the stories of Dylan Thomas September 14-15

EMLYNWILLIAMS _ (cont.) on something new; a public "Reading" of one of his stories, though nothing could have been less like a reading than that immensely dramati~ performance. It then occurred to Emlyn Williams that in the theatre, dialogue need not hold a monopoly, and that the riches of the writteh word could be channeled into a special stage medium. After a year of elimination, adaptation, and study, he presented--in London--his "solo performance," EMLYNWILLIAMSAS CHARLESDICKENS. At this point he had never appeared alone on the stage, which gives an idea of what an adventure the project was; an adventure so startlingly successful that he found himself a pioneer. From then until now, he has periodically returned to his Dickens performance, as well as to his second "one-man show," EMLYNWILLIAMSAS DYLAN THOMASGROWING UP; in London, New York, and all over the world. ("Coming back to either, from other activities, I always feel fresh ... ") The "other activities" have covered a wide field; including (as actor) a season at Stratford-upon-Avon (Shylock, Iago, Angelo), three seasons in New York (DAUGHTER OF SILENCE, A MANFOR ALL SEASONS, THE DEPUTY--as the Pope) and, in London, A MONTHIN THE COUNTRY(with Ingrid Bergman and Michael Redgrave) and FORTYYEARSON. Some of his film perrormances have been in THE DEEP BLUE SEA, THE WRECKOF THE MARYDEARE, I ACCUSE, THE L-SHAPEDROOM,THE WALKING-STICK,THE EYE OF 1HE DEVIL, DAVID COPPERFIELD. In 1969, on Television, he was a commentator on the Investiture of the Prince of Wales. As author; adaptations of A MONTHIN THE COUNTRY and THE MASTERBUILDER, the latter presented by London's National Theatre, with first Michael Redgrave and Maggie Smith, then Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright; THE POWEROF DAWN,a television play; and three books, GEORGE,EMLYN, (both Autobiographies), and BEYONDBELIEF, a study of murder. He is currently preparing on one of his plays.

DYLAN1~l.1HOMAS DYLANTHOMASwas born in Swansea on O~tober -~7th~ · 191~, -and d~ed in New York on November 9th, 1953. In the · ·first item in the program, he introduces himself--through his mouthpiece, the actor--to his theatre audien~e, and goes on from there. It was when Emlyn Williams, (another Welshman), took part in the first stage performance of UNDERMILKWOOD that he realized how its author had been veering towards the theatre, and how--had he lived--the theatre might have been enriched by his talents. It then became the actor's conviction that he ~nould weave ~ogether, from the writer's other work, 8: 'the~tr .ic~ ~-eI_1tertainment.
