Welcome to Yalla Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Yalla Know It All Family Guide. It’s hard to believe that another summer has passed and a new school year begun. Yalla worked ceaselessly on cooking up more unique ways to make the magazine even better—even during the heat of summer—and we’re proud to present this edition to you.

Abu Dhabi is an exciting place to live with its active events calendar, so we’ve teamed up with the city’s art centres, theme parks, museums, tourism authority, and hotels to help families discover the many wonderful things to do, art to view, and yummy bites to chew in the capital. We sincerely hope that you love our new Entertainment, Art & Culture, Dining, and Sports sections. We have put our heart into these sections because we know that these sections help families explore everything that’s fun and new in the city.

Let’s start with the fun bits. If you ask any kid in Abu Dhabi where to find fun here, almost every child, and probably most adults, will exclaim Yas Island. We offer 5 top tips on finding family fun on Yas and then break down the best way to experience the island’s thrills, what’s new in the theme parks, and what’s free to do. Into art? Mark your calendars in November so you don’t miss Polyglot Theatre’s Tangle. Learn about the artsy event and meet the man behind NYUAD Art Centre’s amazing and mostly family-friendly arts calendar on page 10.

November will be here soon, and everyone in the capital knows what that means: F1 fun. Yalla offers tips on surviving the race with your kids on page 40. Everyone has to eat, so Yalla has upped its game to help families nourish themselves, find elegant eats, or teach their children the fine art of brunching at an early age, because one is never too young to brunch in the capital. Turn to page 48 immediately to learn what’s new to eat and where to brunch.

And of course, all of your Yalla favourites are back, including Kids’ Corner on page 18, with everything that you need to know about getting back to school in Abu Dhabi. We also introduced Yalla Teen so the older kids are no longer forgotten. Not only is this painting by the legendary Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, it also has the distinction of being the most expensive painting in the world, having just been acquired for $450.3 million USD — the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction!

Dating from around 1500, Salvator Mundi is an oil on panel painting, executed onto a walnut panel depicting a half-length figure of Christ as saviour of the world, facing the viewer, and dressed in flowing robes of lapis and crimson.

The figure holds a crystal orb in his left hand as he raises his right hand in benediction.

The painting is believed to be a contemporary of both La Belle Ferronnière, an oil painting depicting an unknown woman on loan from the Louvre Museum in Paris, and the Mona Lisa. Its arrival will be announced in the coming weeks. louvreabudhabi.ae

Ensuring a successful start to nursery Whether it’s entering the nursery for the first time or returning after a few weeks of break or holiday, the transition from summer fun to school run always takes a bit of a reset from the children, and parents, involved. But how can we help our children, and in turn ourselves and families, in order to ensure a smooth move back to school when September comes? Maggie Moffat, Consultant at Gabbitas Education, shares her top tips to help make everyone’s adjustment back to nursery as easy as possible.

Start a routine ahead of time Knowing that nursery is just around the corner, it’s a good idea to start your little one in a routine. Children of all ages thrive on routine and like having an inkling of what is going to happen. Babies as well as toddlers that are able to stick to a general schedule will find it easier to adapt to the schedule at nursery. This may mean waking your little one up a little earlier a week or two before the start date to coincide with a setting off time for nursery, or having a set snack, lunch and nap time(s).

Help your child to build their independence Begin giving your child small tasks to complete around the home, such as putting the toys away, taking their plate to the kitchen, or making their bed in the morning. Not only will this give them a sense of ownership and pride in themselves and their activities, it will help prepare them for a more independent nature at nursery. If all summer they have had one to one attention (or even higher with grandparents around) it may be a small shock to their little systems to have to vie for attention with multiple other children around.

Instead, help them be the leaders in the nursery and show other children the skills they’ve gained over the summer.

Begin teaching them some basic manners

Be prepared to get involved

“Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot,” said Clarence Thomas, an American supreme court justice. If the nursery is providing the education, it’s a joint effort to teach manners. Furthermore, in this country it is almost a guarantee that they will have a multicultural nursery with children and teachers from a plethora of backgrounds. That being said, not everyone has the same ideas for etiquette. For example, some cultures find it completely acceptable to eat with their hands, while others greet each other with a bow instead of a handshake. But one thing that never goes amiss is a simple please and thank you. It will definitely be welcomed in any situation, help them navigate protocols they may not be used to, and set your child apart.

Research shows that at every stage of your child’s development parent involvement and awareness will help, “parents build their sense of efficacy to support their children’s success in school” (Ferrara, 2015). Basically, the more you know, the more you can actively help grow your child’s academic, social, and emotional success. When you bring your child to nursery within the first week ask about communication avenues: How will you learn about progress and how often? How do teachers communicate with you? Is there an app or online forum to share the units of study or current curriculum so you can help support at home? Being actively involved with your child’s nursery is a cornerstone for progress and can only bring positive results.

Try out some new foods

Getting back into school patterns or starting new ones needs to begin with day one. Nursery is the foundation of your child’s vast academic career and starting off with good habits will create a precedent for years to come. With these tips this academic year will be off to a roaring start and you and your child will be more confident in the months to come.

Many nurseries provide food for the children, or at least a snack, but depending on how varied your own palette and fridge is at home, your child may have some difficulty adjusting to new foods.

Although there will surely be nothing too adventurous in nursery, start introducing some new food options to your child so they can more readily adapt to change with ease. It may be fun for the whole family as well!

Practice those motor skills To ready your child to be able to hit those important milestones, they have to be reinforced at home as well. In this case it may be kicking a ball around, or doing some colouring in, or fitting the blocks into the correct shape. Reinforcing skills outside of class time not only helps them with muscle memory and keeping up their progress in nursery, it’s also a great time for bonding and understanding your child’s strengths and where there is opportunity for improvement.

The Importance of Experiential Learning “Education is the kindling of a �lame, not the �illing of a vessel.” Socrates School league tables the world over are dominated by statistics; the benchmark? Exam results. If one was �ixated on these tables as the key measure of school improvement, then the obvious conclusion would be to channel the majority of available resources into securing better results. A logical strategy, but a potentially dangerous one. The academic curriculum is a very important aspect of a rounded education – but top exam grades on their own are not enough.

Increasingly, the media reports on the need for the next generation to be prepared for the future world of work. Governments and industry leaders are calling on schools to give students the wherewithal to master ‘jobs that don’t exist yet’. These calls prompt a lot of head nodding from all sectors of society and everyone looks to educational institutions to equip young people with skills in everything from decision-making to networking, and critical thinking to public speaking.

That leaves schools in a precarious position. On the one hand there is the responsibility to guide students through their examinations, whilst on the other, there is this concept of preparing them for an as yet unde�ined future workplace.

Schools are tackling this in different ways. Skills based curricula and vocational quali�ications are becoming increasingly popular. Currently there is insuf�icient research to conclude whether these approaches are proving successful or not. Time will tell.

Have You Heard About the New Library?

In early 2019, a new children’s library will open in the capital, which will be housed in the reopened Cultural Foundation.

Spread over three floors, the 5,250-square-metre facility will be divided into several age-appropriate and fully immersive social spaces.

The library will boast three-dimensional learn and play areas where children can physically immerse themselves in the act of reading and learning about books.

The library will feature a diverse collection of books on genres such as fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, autobiographies, and audio books.
