WELCOME TO YALLA Hi Everyone,
HAPPY NEW YEAR! WOW! We cannot believe that we are in 2020. Time does fly when you’re having fun (or when you have kids). We’d feel much more pensive about the passing of another year if we weren’t beginning such a very exciting new decade! So, let’s take a look at what’s up and coming in the capital. This is going to be a big year for the arts in Abu Dhabi. 2020 is set to bring us big events, such as the Abu Dhabi Classics, Hay Festival Abu Dhabi in February, the Abu Dhabi Festival, and a packed year of arts programming from all the usual art purveyors: Louvre Abu Dhabi, NYUAD Arts Center and Art Gallery, and Manarat Al Saadiyat. A little further afoot, Al Ain is back on the map with a host of great events, so we bring you Al Ain mapped. In this packed issue, we dive into New Year’s Resolutions with a bang. If getting fit and eating healthy are among your regular resolutions, read on and prepare to be inspired and maybe stick to them for a change! We can’t wait to get this year going and to explore the city. But first, let’s dive right into the topic of fitness, because everyone all around the world is talking about it in January, then it’s all the usuals: YallaKids, YallaTeens, YallaWomen, Education, Sport, Parties, YallaEats, Healthcare, and much more. Happy reading and hunting for your next great Abu Dhabi adventure.
Until next term…

Looking to explore the Garden City? Yalla offers a one-stop shop to see every site or attend every workshop and event this season in Al Ain
T
he garden city of Al Ain sits between the desert and the mountains that provide the springs for its extensive and ancient oasis. As the old centre of government, many of the Emirate's traditional forts are found in Al Ain. Until cars and motorways made it an easy 1.5 hour trip between Abu Dhabi island and the oasis, it took caravans and people walking over the dunes for over five days to cover the distance. Bear that crossing in mind as you drive into the dunes and prepare to experience the gentler and cooler pace of life in Al Ain. Though there’s much to see and do in Al Ain for all types of travellers, no trip to the city is complete without a visit to the numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Here is Yalla’s not-to-miss culture and heritage site list in Al Ain.
AL JAHILI FORT
Set in lush landscaped gardens, the picturesque Al Jahili Fort and the stepped layers of the main tower are one of Al Ain’s most iconic structures. The fort was built in 1891 to protect palm plantations, to ensure inter-tribal peace, and to protect against intruders from the mountain passes. Inside the fort, the small photo exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger is in itself worth the stopover. The British explorer crossed the Empty Quarter by camel in the mid-1940s and documented what he saw with his camera, making this exhibition a voyage back in time where you can immerse yourself in the early Bedouin life of the region. Make sure you see the documentary movie on site and view the small exhibition about Sheikh Zayed the First. Sultan Bin Zayed Al Awwal Street, Al Ain. Free entry, 03 711 8311
AL AIN OASIS
Walking through an oasis comprised of 147,000 date palms and fruit bearing trees, such as mangos, oranges, bananas, and figs, is an immersive experience for all the family. The city of Al Ain owes its name to this huge 1200-hectare oasis, which has been cultivated for several thousand years. The oasis has plenty of working examples of the falaj, an indigenous system of complex water channels that tap into underground wells. Explore narrated trails that traverse the interior paths of the oasis either by foot or using the bike rentals available. There is also a small Eco Centre and Information Pavilion by the West Gate and bike pickup/drop-off places at either side of the oasis, that work via a self-service system (for which you need a credit card). Not far from Al Jahili Fort on Hessa bint Mohamed Street, Al Mutawaa. Free entry. 02 599 5438

AL AIN PALACE MUSEUM
Al Ain Palace Museum, the former home of the late UAE founder, HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was once a political and social hub. The meandering complex of courtyards was renovated to reflect traditional designs and opened as a museum to the public in 2001. You can see how the ruling family lived, and how local and international dignitaries were received, including the tent that Sheikh Zayed used to host guests during the winter. Western edge of Al Ain Oasis, Hessa Bint Mohamed Street, Al Mutawaa. Free entry. 03 711 8388
AL QATTARA ARTS CENTRE
Overlooking the date palm gardens of Al Qattara Oasis, Al Qattara Arts Centre is located inside Al Qattara Fort, which has been repurposed to house this brilliant arts centre and gallery. With traditional exterior facades, the restored Al Qattara Arts Centre carefully maintains a blend of traditional architecture with state-of-the-art facilities. The Centre’s aim is to offer a space where arts and culture can be studied, practised, and developed by people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Just off 121 Street across the road from Souk Al Qattara. 03 761 8080
QASR AL MUWAIJI
Qasr Al Muwaiji was home to generations of the ruling Al Nahyan family, and saw the birth of UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 1948. The UNESCO World Heritage Site functioned not only as a home and an oasis in the desert but also as a place of rule and a focus for the community. The architectural gem now offers its visitors a variety of historical and traditional experiences associated with the venue. Khalifa Bin Zayed St, 03 767 4444

AN OASIS OF FUN
Do you have a few days off and keen on a road trip? Jump in your car and set your navigation to Al Ain to explore the Garden City If you are keen on planning a long weekend to Al Ain, Yalla recommends that you first explore Al Ain Oasis. This lush heritage site is a far cry from the city and filled with trees, plants, and shrubbery. The historic Al Ain Oasis sprawls across 3,000 acres and provides a unique insight into the region's inhabitants who began taming the desert 4,000 years ago. The oasis holds up to 100 different varieties of plants, with widespread plantations that are also working farms. Shaped by a complex shared water supply, the Al Ain Oasis is based on both wells and ‘falaj’, the UAE’s traditional irrigation system. It has plenty of working examples of the falaj that have been used for centuries to tap into underground wells. The site’s ‘Weekends at the Oasis’ initiative offers a chance for the community to come together. With a hub of interactive activities and popular attractions, visitors will be treated to a market showcasing locally grown farm products, traditional oasis-inspired handicrafts, Emirati cooking demonstrations, fun games, horse riding and bicycle tours through the oasis, an educational workshop on Falaj, and arts & crafts workshops for all ages. ‘Weekend at the Oasis’ is a chance for families to create lasting memories while learning about history and Emirati culture at this fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site. Admission to the event is free, but registration is required to participate in workshops. For more information, please phone 03 712 8523

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
This year, resolve to keep your New Year’s resolutions. Yalla offers tips, inspiring stories, and some suggestions to help you stay motivated all year long. Here are our top tips for finding fitness routines that stick.
I
f you’ve already given up on your health-focused resolution to lose weight, you’re not alone; most people give up by February. Let this be the year you finally take control of your health and fitness by making simple changes to the way you approach your goals. Here are some top tips for making your New Year’s resolutions stick this time.
FIND YOUR IDEAL WORKOUT
Not everyone is destined to become a competitive runner, yoga guru or weightlifting champion. To stick with a fitness plan, it's important to discover the exercise method that you enjoy and that works best for you. This might mean that you'll need to try out a few workout styles before settling on one. The biggest hurdle is just getting started.
JUST GET STARTED
When it comes to sticking to a fitness resolution, it's all about motivation. Getting started is the hardest part, but motivation builds quickly once you actually get your body moving. Create a plan that includes a motivational booster to jumpstart your interest in working out. Whatever you can do to simply get yourself started can make all the difference.
MAKE EXERCISE A PRIORITY
You could find a hundred and one things to do in a day, especially if you're running after little children and balancing a busy work schedule. However, in order to succeed at your fitness goals, you have to make exercise a priority, just like everything else in your life. Change how you view working out and figure it into your daily routine.
COOL DOWN
A lot of people think that cooling down isn't necessary, but it’s indeed a vital part of an exercise routine. Not only is cooling your body down beneficial to your cardiovascular system, but it also helps your muscles and joints become more flexible and less prone to injury. Cooling down can also help you stick with a workout plan because you can treat it like a reward for a job well done.
FITNESS IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION

Perhaps the most important tip to help you follow through with your New Year's resolution to exercise and stay fit is to think of your goals as a journey, not a destination. Achieving lasting fitness is a lifestyle choice, not just a short-term goal to lose a few kilos. Enjoy every workout, knowing that with each day you're becoming a healthier, stronger you.

FITNESS CITY
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
People begin fitness challenges for the bodywork but stay for the breakthrough. Steve Watson, the founder of Gulf Multi Sport, is busy creating myriad fitness challenges to serve a fitness starved community
In the beginning, it was personal. To use an Australian expression, when I first came to the country, I spent a bit too much time 'grazing on the top green grass'. I ran in Australia’s half marathon then gathered some buddies and started a cycling group. Along came the Abu Dhabi National Marathon in 2010 and then I was involved in starting the Mubadala Tennis and the Color Runs. I also was involved in starting Tri Yas, which celebrates ten years in February 2021. When I had more time on my hands, it was all about the journey and getting as many people as I could involved in group fitness. It was all a bit of fun. Then from about 2012-13, it started to get a bit more serious. In 2014, we realised that we needed to formalise this as Abu Dhabi was catching up with the procedures. With an old Iron Man buddy, I started a company whose passion has always been about community and served on a very local level.
yallaabudhabi.ae
marathons, to the 5-star Aquathons and Junior Aquathons, the events expanded in size and scope due to increased awareness. Interest started to spill from the shores of Saadiyat Island to Emirates Palace Beach Club to Yas Island, and now to the many well attended events happening on Hudayriat Island. It’s also the people who get involved. People often volunteer at an event then become motivated to give it a try themselves and not be just a bystander. It’s inspirational to know that our events have been the jumping off point for numerous people’s personal fitness journeys.
WHAT TOOK GULF MULTI SPORT TO THE NEXT LEVEL? The Abu Dhabi Sports Council came along in 2015 and said that they wanted to help us grow community participation, noting that Gulf Multi Sport already had a pretty good
handle on it. They said we want X number of runs in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and then Al Dhafra region, then cycling. It took off. Then Modon and the Abu Dhabi Municipality established phase one of Hudayriat Island. Just wait for February 2020, the new sections of the island will open up, and things are going to get very exciting in the city.
IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE FIT
Well, just having Hudayriat Island has made so much possible, it’s a natural paradise for cycling, running, and swimming so the Triathlons there took off last year. We deliver four tris on the island, then there’s Tri Yas and ITU. Abu Dhabi was just awarded the ITU World Championship in 2022. The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon is the pinnacle for runners. Liwa Cycling, through the Empty Quarter, draws many from around the GCC. Every year, there is just so much more for fitness lovers from the UAE and around the world to look forward to. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
Here are two inspirational fitness stories to get you and keep you motivated after the New Year’s Resolutions’ thrill fades and reality sets in.! Take it from Zoe and Kimbely—you really CAN do it this year!
WHY DO I TRI?
By Zoe Neill
I was always fit as a child but never ever thin. I danced, swam, and rode bikes and horses, but I was just a chubby kid. When I was about 12 years old, I was told that I’d never be a horse rider, because I was too fat. Sure, I had an affinity for horses, but I was too heavy to compete and be successful in competition. Well, I was not about to listen to all that, and I proved them all wrong. I rose to team captain and competed on almost every pony club team going. My dedication and commitment was second to none, and I won numerous awards for my tenacity. But there was one accomplishment that always seemed too daunting: triathlons. It never even crossed my mind that this was something I could ever possibly try. There was simply no way that I could run, swim, and ride a horse, so I stuck to what I knew! Fast forward to me at 30. Disaster struck. Due to countless spinal injuries, I was told that if I didn’t stop riding horses, I’d be in a wheelchair permanently within six months. My body said enough, so I walked away from horses. When I arrived in the UAE in 2010, my oldest daughter showed an interest in running and exercise, so I joined the bandwagon. I also started swimming and going to the gym. I soon did my first ever race—the Sharjah Ladies 2km race. I finished, and I was elated. An injury soon set me back, and I piled on the weight. Finally, I said no more ‘fat Zoe’. My 8-year-old daughter joined My Tri Club, and I thought if she can do it, so can I. I will try! I am now almost 35 kgs lighter and running every day. I did my first triathlon on 4 October, and I finished! Before I set out, I decided that I will cross that finish line even if I have to kill myself trying or crawl across. I tried, and you can too! Join Tri-Belles if you’d like to tri alongside me and a supportive group of athletic women. Learn more at Tribelles.wordpress.com
ALWAYS RUNNING
From a young age, Kimbely Baptiste was always on the run. She has since turned a penchant for speed into a passion for personal growth. Yalla caught up with her to chat. Some run for their lives, some run to outpace an opponent, others, like Kimbely Baptiste, Sports Coordinator at Zayed University, run because it’s a passion and to achieve a personal best. While it might seem a small task to only compete against yourself and for your own best time, that’s far from the case. Kimbely has been sprinting since primary school, achieving great heights in both the British and international sprinting community. Her personal best times are 11.47s in the 100m and 23.24s in the 200m. Eleven years ago, she qualified for the English School Allstate Championship in 2008, which is not an easy competition, especially given the fact that she has been self-trained for the past three years. She spends at least one to two hours everyday weight training in the gym or sprinting on the university's track. When asked where she gets the motivation to train every day, Kimbely shrugs bearing a very easy and natural smile and says that it’s ‘just what I do’. She adds, 'I’ve always loved sprinting so, for me, it feels very natural. I have a great desire to see how much further I can push my body and to see how much more I can make it achieve. It also helps that I love what I do, and I never give up’.
Kimbely’s advice to her students at Zayed University where she oversees the athletics programs for the students is just tro try every sport available to you. 'I love them all!’ Kimbely smiles and adds, ‘You just don’t know what sport you will love until you’ve tried a lot, so take every opportunity you get to get outside and get active with friends—sports are best enjoyed with friends’. Kimbely’s advice extends to those of us embarking on new fitness regimens this new year. Push yourself, don’t give up, and try every sport you can with a good friend by your side. Good luck!

YOGA IS THE ONE SPONSORED CONTENT
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
Yoga is not only an effective method to reduce stress but is also a good way to get fit and stay healthy. Yalla caught up with Mina Lee, the studio owner of YOGAONE to learn more
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN YOGA?
It was a happy accident. I was looking to take better care of myself and happened to see a yoga studio while I was walking on the street. I was drawn to the practise right after my very first class. My body was stronger and healthier within a few months of consistent practise but the mental clarity and awareness after it brought out the better person within me. This naturally led me to desire to share the gift of yoga with others through teaching.
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF YOGA FOR WOMEN?
Women face a number of difficulties when dealing with their personal and professional lives. It can be hard to find time to relax. Yoga's most obvious benefits relate to stress reduction, flexibility, strength and relaxation. While it's no cure, yoga can be an effective adjunct therapy for a variety of conditions, from fertility to breast cancer to positive body image.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START PRACTISING YOGA?
Yoga isn’t about extreme flexibility or contorting your muscles and spine into fancy shapes. It's about breathing, finding inner strength through meditation, and creating freedom in the body with yoga poses. It's truly that simple. Start with accepting all aspects of life. Take a moment to appreciate your body, your life, and your circumstances and release expectations, such as 'I should be able to touch my toes already...' and make sure you have fun!
YOGAONE is a small boutique yoga studio born from the idea that yoga should be accessible for everyone and everybody. The studio prides itself on being responsive to its community. Here are three facts about YOGAONE: 1. It has a diverse and exceptionally well-trained group of International teachers who are able to lead a diverse array of yoga styles. 2. It is the only studio in the city that offers Infra Red Heating to provide heated temperature controlled Hot Hatha and Hot Vinyasa Flow classes, and a comprehensive kids program that includes karate and ballet. 3. It hosts regular workshops and intensives from both local and international teachers and baby massage classes. If you have ever thought about starting yoga or are wanting to return, the staff at YOGAONE are there to support your journey. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
NEW YEAR: NEW FOOD MINDSET
Finding your ‘new year, new you’ isn’t only about fitness, it’s also about your food mindset. Dietitian Jeanne Bedard offers tips to finding your new food mindset
W
hat would nutrition and fitness be like if we devoted more time to our individual wisdom, self-care, and body intelligence? This year, 'taking control' of our health should also mean acknowledging our smart body cues and really listening to them. Here are three tips from a dietitian to keep in mind as you move forward with your 2020 health goals.
‘MY PROBLEM IS THAT I LOVE FOOD.’
But is it? We say we love food but when was the last time you had an undistracted meal or snack? Limiting distractions while eating helps you focus on how hungry you are, to maximise food satisfaction, to feel your fullness during the meal, and to stop eating when you are comfortable.
HAVE YOU NOTICED WHAT AFFECTS YOUR INTAKE?
Most people can stick to a detailed meal plan, but few truly understand the day-to-day factors affecting what and how much they eat. Do you eat unconsciously, emotionally, eat what you ‘paid for’, and/or finish what is served to you? Do you compare yourself to others or have strict food rules? Responding to outside influences can be tracked and changed, and this daily introspection can play in the favour of your health and balance.
WHAT DO YOU EAT WHEN YOU ARE STARVING? Are you often too busy to pay attention to your physical hunger? We rarely make good food decisions when we are in ‘emergency eating mode’. Before you start another diet, look into your meal timings. In practice, if we compare all diets, one key factor is regularity. When you are on a diet, you prioritise meal planning; otherwise, you may tend to grab food on-the-go or get home starving and eat a ‘meal size’ snack before dinner is ready. Craving carbs when you are starving is smart—your body knows that it is the fastest source of fuel and energy. We can thank evolution for that, and it is a universal tendency, but I invite you to consider mapping how your hunger shows up during the day and how your meal timing compares if you are keen to make real and lasting changes to your diet. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
NEW YEAR: NEW BODY MINDSET Are you looking forward to 2020 and having a new fitness routine? Do you consider running your first marathon or just getting back to the gym? Here are 3 tips to avoid pitfalls and prevent injury with your new resolutions or workout plans! Balance your power: When people exercise we notice two trends: mindfulness and balance, for example enjoying yoga, pilates etc. and more cardio oriented goers, for example swimming, running, walking. On the cardio front, movement patterns are often unidirectional (moving in one direction). Those activities are often focusing on strengthening big muscle groups. What is essential to keep in mind is that mixing individualised strengthening, stretching, stabilizing big AND small muscle groups will ensure that your running session is more powerful or simply more pleasant. Plan for your routine to be realistic and include 3 key points: cardio & big muscle groups, strengthening of small muscle groups as well as flexibility, mobility and body awareness sessions. Less can be more (long term), diverse will be more balanced! Those middle age aches and pains! For most of us, sitting is our day-today main position. Posture and muscle imbalance are a big factor that will affect how you respond to physical activity, develop muscle aches, or get injured. You know how to focus on your form at the gym but rethinking your position at work will also help you to improve your workouts.

Forget about what you want to lose, focus on what you have to gain! Most people consider trying to lose weight for the new year. When we talk about being active, we often focus on calories in - calories out. This year, we invite you to make a list of different activities and what you have to gain from them: flexibility, better sleep, dealing with stress better, improving your posture, get your heart pumping, enjoy good company or find a supportive community. You are more likely to keep going with these activities if you keep in mind those added values!

BUILDING A WORLD OF MUSIC
YALLA ARTS
The programme for 2020’s Abu Dhabi Classics Season has been announced, and art lovers will be thrilled with the Festival’s new one-week long format.
T
hink you know the Abu Dhabi Classics season? Think again. This year, the programme takes on a new format with the objective to reach even more arts and culture lovers within the emirates and abroad. The week-long programme runs from 28 January to 7 February and welcomes world class classical and symphonic performances from around the world and even a very special appearance by probably the greatest ballerina of her generation, Svetlana Zakharova, of the Bolshoi Ballet. 2020’s line up of performances explores the universal language that is music and, in keeping with 2019’s Year of Tolerance, a common bond between the performances is peace and tolerance. ‘The beauty of Classical music and why it’s so beloved around the world is that it’s not linked to any nation, language, or context’, explains Dr. Ronald Perlwitz, Head of Music, Arts Department, Department of Culture and Tourism — Abu Dhabi. ‘Classical music is taken out of context—time and place—and appreciated for its inherent beauty and universality. You cannot say this about every art form.' When asked about the season’s highlights, Dr. Perlwitz, cannot

possibly pick a favourite performance, but he does mention a particular highlight. The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra will present a special tribute on what will be Ludwig van Beethoven's 250th birthday. In celebration, the Orchestra will perform the composer’s well known 9th (‘Choral’) Symphony, with soloists and choir. For the unfamiliar, Friedrich Schiller wrote the poem An die Freude (To Joy) in 1785 as a ‘celebration of the brotherhood of man’. After Schiller's death, the poem provided the words for the choral movement to the piece. ‘The 9th Symphony today still represents the values of humanity, tolerance and friendship’, adds Dr. Perwitz. The season will also welcome two highlights from the Arabic music world. February will welcome the most famous soprano in the Arabic world, the exceptional Magida El Roumi, and the young and talented Egyptian singer, Sanaa Nabil, who rose to fame through the TV programme ‘Arabs Got Talent’, diversifying the offerings and making the season even more inclusive. THE HEART OF THE CITY
QASR AL HOSN is the oldest and most significant building in Abu Dhabi. This area could have been made a sterile homage to the nation’s past, but instead, it is infused with life and vibrancy so visitors can experience history in real time. Live and breathe UAE art and culture on one heaving city block. Here’s your guide to Qasr Al Hosn. Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest stone structure in the city of Abu Dhabi with its coral and sea stone watchtower used to defend the city’s settlement and the only freshwater well on Abu Dhabi island. In 1793, the tower was later enlarged into a small fort by HH Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan and became the permanent residence of the ruler. Qasr Al Hosn was transformed into a museum in 2018 following more than eleven years of conservation and restoration work.

TO VIEW:
The SOVEREIGN FOREST is an ongoing project, created by visual artist Amar Kanwar in collaboration with Sudhir Pattnaik/Samadrusti and Sherna Dastur. The contents change and grow, and the artists introduce new elements wherever possible. The number of additional elements depends on the space available and the context of each venue and so the design also adapts and evolves. The poetic meditation attempts to initiate a creative response to our understanding of crime, politics, human rights, and ecology. The validity of poetry as evidence in a trial, the discourse on seeing, on compassion, justice, and the determination of the self all come together in a constellation of films, texts, books, photographs, seeds, and processes. The Sovereign Forest centres on the story of Odisha (formerly Orissa), where farms have been displaced in favour of industry. This poetic examination of the story of Odisha offers a lens through which to contemplate global patterns of economically

driven migration around the world, how we are losing humanity’s connection to nature and at what cost. The exhibition encourages a non-violent contemplation of larger questions raised by the conflicts in Odisha. By presenting images of Odisha in the poetic, meditative form that the artists have chosen, they slow everything down, put a ‘pause’ on the fight, and invite deeper reflection so viewers can examine what the real cost of a ‘growth at all costs’ mentality.

FOREST AND FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A MAGICAL JOURNEY
YALLA ARTS
Explore the magical realism of Colombian American artist-painter Mari Gamarra. Yalla dives into the powerful reflection of expressions of emotion that virtually leap off her canvasses.
DESCRIBE YOUR ART.
I am a storyteller; I use observations to enhance the surreal experience of time. My paintings are intense ‘life experiences’ imbued with a rich, vivid, and unbroken palette of colours and patterns, which I use to enchant and capture the observer through every brushstroke.
WHAT'S CHANGED YOUR ART?
I arrived in Abu Dhabi in 2006. The influence that Abu Dhabi has had on my work is based on my own experience of having been touched by the charms of the UAE culture. I am working on a series called The Eye of the Artist in the Emirates. These paintings portray people in different circumstances and instances living in a country which seamlessly blends the beauty and heritage of its rich Arabic culture with the glitz of a country relentlessly driving towards modernity.
The series “Transhumants” is a universal theme. The word comes from French and derives from the Latin words trans 'across' and humus 'ground'. My paintings have sought to capture these migrations of people. There are many reasons for these migrations: violence, a better future, natural disasters, etc., however, as an artist, I focus on the mass movement of the people. I paint the energy of people on the move. People walking through time, it does not matter if we never move from the same place. We are always Transhumants journeying through the infinite limitlessness of time.
ABU DHABI ART SCENE NOW?
The transformation in the field of arts since I arrived is extraordinary. In a very short time Abu Dhabi has opened several new art venues and fairs, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Art, Manarat Al Saadiyat, NYUAD Art Gallery, Warehouse 421, and the recent reopening of the Cultural Foundation. It’s extraordinary to see the support that Emirati artists have from their government; I have never seen something like this before. © Mari Gamarra

MAPPING MIGRATION
B
Abu Dhabi is a community of movers and shakers. Cartography examines how, why, and where we move in a poignant performance that’s perfect for the whole family. ack by popular demand, Cartography explores the commonalities of migration and mapping at the center of worlds in motion. Created in collaboration with artist Kaneza Schaal and writer Christopher Myers, Cartography draws on their work with refugee youth.
Perfect for the whole family, Cartography aims to engage young audiences to examine where we’re all ‘from’ and to ponder whether or not the question was ever even slightly relevant. Cartography is a performance where visual tools, such as map-making, meet performance elements, such as filmmaking and dancing, and sculptures, to create an array of visual journeys. Sound sensor technology responds to actors’ voices, activating a virtual storm; cellphones are used to mark memories and distances travelled by participants in the audience. “We are so proud that The Arts Center is a co-commissioner of Cartography, and to have been able to help develop the digital scenography in residency at The Arts Center during Ramadan 2 years ago’, explains Bill Bragin, Executive Artistic Director of The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi. Bill adds, ‘the piece, designed for young audiences in middle and high school, as well as their families, looks at the migration stories of youth of the same age. The piece is filled with empathy, humor, intelligence and lots of heart. Cartography is a powerful meditation on maps, fences, journeys, memory, and the meaning of home, themes that will resonate for the audiences in the UAE’. The audience is invited to examine their own lives, and the maps we have yet to draw and will draw in real time. This performance is for all ages. Learn more at nyuad-artscenter.org

FOR THE LOVE OF COUNTRY
YALLA TEENS
YallaTeen, Zainab Khan, met Mariam Al Mazrouei, a sixteen-year-old Emirati artist who wants to make her mark on both the UAE and global art scene with her paintings
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PAINTER?
I started painting when I was four years old, and I had discovered my talent through school projects that required art. I remember sticking big papers all over my house and just painting all over the walls and my mother would get so mad at me for that, but it helped me to discover that I had this passion for art, but I liked to just express myself like that.
YOU’RE 16 AND IN COLLEGE. HOW? Just like how I entered the art world at a young age, I started school at a young age as well. I was in first grade when I was three, so I skipped a huge part of school and
entered university and I think it’s good. My age doesn’t make anything weird or difficult.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF ART?
My favorite piece is called Love at First Sight, and it’s the painting of the two horses, touching faces. It’s actually the first horse painting that I ever did, and I enjoyed expressing the love between the horses. They’re actually horses from my farm. I like how the hair floats throughout the painting and I just love it!
WHAT ARTIST WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET?
I would love to meet Frida Kahlo. I just like how she creates her art and self-portraits in so many ways and how she expresses her Mexican culture through her art. I want to express my Emirati culture in the same way.
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I want to reach the world as a young Emirati artist, to show the traditions of the United
Arab Emirates to the whole world, and especially focusing on horses which are a huge part of the beauty of our traditions.
HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT YOUR ART IS HELPING TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE IDENTITY OF THE UAE?
My art helps to improve the identity of the Emirati woman. I want to show how we’re capable of doing anything. This is my identity and I want to express my identity through my work.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS?
What I would say is never stop believing in yourself, because as an artist it was very difficult for me to start showing people my art so I started by believing in myself because the art industry is very competitive. So, I believed in myself and I started pushing myself towards improving and making myself known. Get in touch with Mariam at intlartmgmt. com/mariam-al-mazrouei

I
met Mariam in the lobby of the Andaz Capital Gate hotel, where a couple of her paintings were on display. The three pieces on display were large paintings of horses, I could tell immediately that she had a strong connection with the animals, just by looking at how she portrayed them in her art. Mariam lives in Al Ain on her family’s horse farm. Horses are a huge part of her life and a major source of inspiration for her paintings.

CLYMB TIME!
Our Yalla Teen checked out Clymb on Yas Island over winter break, and the experience was elevating We started the day off with skydiving, first going upstairs to see the giant flight chamber. We watched a couple of people take their turns and then got into our flight suits before our safety briefing. One at a time, we took our turns flying! We were both a bit scared, but the instructor put us at ease, and we had a great time! Next up was climbing!.We climbed up the beginner and intermediate walls and then tried out bouldering. We couldn’t climb up the Summit yet because we weren’t experienced enough, but we were told that there were classes that we could take to get us up to that level. Clymb was cool because there was something for everyone! People of all ages could go into the wind tunnel, and there was a climbing wall for every ability. It’s inside Yas Mall, so it works for a day out with your family or friends. My friend and I had a great time, and we’re already thinking about going again with more of our friends! clymbabudhabi.com.

Many of us haven’t found exercise that we love. The New Year brings pressure to ‘be better’ and set resolutions that often go unattained. Our body, no matter the shape or size, is an incredible, complex system that is meant to move, and often. I have some ideas to help make movement part of your everyday routine. 1.
What is exercise? Movement can be something we look forward to. Our body must move dynamically to maintain healthy balance. Walking, jogging, biking, going to the gym or a class count, but so does choosing the stairs over the lift. Adding small changes make a big impact over time.
2.
Why exercise? We sometimes think exercise is punishment for food we eat. When we approach it out of respect for our body, which serves us daily, it’s easier to commit to a routine. When we give our body movement, the benefits will follow.
3.
Calendar it! To start and keep going, calendar it! Treat exercise like it’s important, and it will become important. Start small and make it sustainable. Try things until you find what makes you feel good and pay attention to how you feel after you move. Focus on this to keep you moving day after day.
I close all classes by reminding students to feel gratitude for their bodies. When we care for our bodies with love and appreciation, it’s a powerful force for healthy change. NUTRITION
Changing our habits and our mindset is tough. How do we break through behaviours entrenched over so many years? Undoubtedly, one of the ways to implement successful new habits is by replacing a bad habit with a good habit. For example, every time you feel like eating chips, change that habit for eating crispy vegetables instead or replace rice with quinoa. Sustaining new habits and behaviours translates into healthier bodies and heightened energy levels.
MEET NAZIA
Here are my top 5 tips: 1.
Eat the rainbow. Aim for 9-13 servings a day of fruits & vegetables. The number of servings is not as important as making sure what you eat is wholesome and colourful.
2.
Don't be scared of good fats! Nuts, seeds, coconut, and avocado oils are essential for our overall health, especially brain health.
3.
Drink enough water: Our body depends on water to prevent digestive issues, and water’s essential for the removal of toxins from our bodies.
4.
Sleep Enough: Lack of sleep impacts the balance of hormones in the body that regulate appetite. If you want to maintain or lose weight, don't forget to get adequate sleep.
5.
Love yourself: After my experience with breast cancer I have discovered that practicing self-love is vital to my overall health. If I truly loved myself, what would I eat for dinner? How would I nourish my body? Would I exercise today? Would I sleep early?
Changes that will last will come from a deeper place within us, and most importantly is the practice of good health and self-love. MINDSET In over 15 years of working with clients, I have found that it is
not just about what people eat that we need to focus on—there needs to be a shift in mindset; a shift away from labelling yourself as good or bad for eating. Stop the guilt and remember, weight loss is not a measure of health.
Try this: 1. Pick one step for better health to work on; for example, to drink more water. 2. Make a list of three ways you can put it into practice this week. 3. Once this action is locked in and becomes a habit, try another one. 4. Keep it simple and go back to nature—that’s where the magic is. A shift away from using food as a reward, celebration, or a crutch. As we shift our mindset, I like to focus on nourishment. There’s nourishment from food but there are also other areas of nourishment that don’t appear on a plate: What are you thinking? Who are you spending your time with? How often are you moving? How well are you sleeping? All these areas of nourishment affect everything from our energy levels to our immunity. We can be eating all the kale in the world, but if these areas aren’t met, your health will suffer. These are the mindset shifts I believe will alter people’s health and well-being. It can be hard to shift your mindset away from getting on the scale, and rather honoring the journey, but I know that the biggest breakthroughs come from a series of small steps that add up to big changes in the long term.

EARLY STEM EDUCATION
YALLA EDUCATION
Parents want to equip their children for the future, and it’s never too early to start! We caught up with Amelia Joan Brown, the Principal of Falcon British Nursery to learn about the nursery’s innovative approach to pre-K learning.
A
t Falcon, children are equipped for the future. As a specialist STEM nursery with our own science lab, children learn coding, chemistry, physics and engineering through play as well as botany using hydroponics. Children use 21st century collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity. This is what schools want.
TELL OUR READERS ABOUT RECEIVING THE ECO SCHOOLS GREEN FLAG AND WHAT THIS ACCREDITATION MEANS TO YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY?
Ecology education is a Falcon passion. Completing an accreditation focuses the entire school on eco excellence. We align with international standards, which is what parents want. We focus on a sustainable planet which is what children want.
IN ADDITION TO BEING GREAT FOR OUR SHARED CLIMATE, WHAT DO ALL YOUR ECO INITIATIVES TEACH CHILDREN? Within 25 years the impact of the climate crisis will require leaders to collaborate to create eco solutions and we want our children to have the knowledge to be able to take leading roles in eco projects in the future.
IN WHAT WAYS HAVE CHILDREN TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING ABOUT LIFE?
Think of four year olds building a fort. They collaborate by deciding on the best diggers / lifters in the group and use creative approaches until they have finished the task while saving a beetle at the same time. Children have taught me to work with tenacity and passion while seeing obstacles as temporary. I have learnt to find wonder in simplicity and nature and to discover people’s strength. INTERNATIONAL CURRICULA YALLA EDUCATION
A levels, GCSE’s IGCSE’s, IB Diploma, GPA, AP High School Diploma, these terms are bandied around by educationalists but what do they really mean and how do they impact on your child’s education? Fiona Mckenzie demystifies international curricula.
T
he most popular choices remain the British, US and IB curriculums and whilst they all have the potential to give your child a great education, it is important to understand the similarities and be clear about the differences.
The British curriculum, based on agreed national standards, has generally been held to be the gold standard in education. A 13-year programme, renowned for rigorous academics and ensuring that children learn the ‘building blocks’ of literacy and numeracy from the early years onwards. There are four ‘Key Stages’ KS1 (Ages 5-7), KS2 (ages 7-11), KS3 (11-16) and KS4 (16-18). KS3 culminates in externally assessed exams at the known as GCSE’s or the international version, IGCSE’s. Students generally take up to nine subjects, with Maths and English and Sciences being standard and options to add in languages, humanities and creative subjects. KS4 focusses on A Levels, where a student chooses to study 3 or 4 subjects in depth, which will prepare them for University entry anywhere in the world.
Whichever route you chose, your child will be well equipped both academically and with a set of transferable learning skills to comfortably take them onto the next stage of their education journey. Carfax Education UAE provides expert guidance and advice to families globally, from engaging private tutors to provide the support required to meet challenging academic demands, to advising on university admissions, and school entry guidance for ambitious applicants seeking access to the world’s leading educational institutions. For more information about Carfax's services, please email enquiries.uae@carfax-education.com or call 044385276.
The US curriculum is a K-12-year programme and breaks into Elementary (ages 5-10), Middle School (10-13) and High School (13-18). Based on the Common Core standards, each school has the freedom to adapt the curriculum to suit its needs. A holistic approach to education, that values developing character and individual interests as well as what goes on in the classroom. Graduating with a High School Diploma allows progression to US Universities, but other countries will require additional qualifications. The IB curriculum has three stages PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16) and the IB diploma (16-18). It takes a more cross curricular approach, in PYP and MYP years subjects are taught under a series of themes such as ‘how the world works’ or ‘orientations in space and time’. This interdisciplinary approach encourages students to connect their learning to the real world. The Diploma programme requires students to study 6 subjects at different levels and they are also graded on their participation in community activities, an extended essay and learning to think. Graduates of the IB programme are welcomed at universities globally and valued for their enquiring minds, their ability to think critically and to communicate effectively. All these options will give your child a great start in life. You need to think about what type of learner your child is, someone who enjoys being taught or learning for themselves, and whether you value rigor over more independent learning, specialisation over breadth.

The choice of a school can be exhausting for parents of children with additional needs. Yalla learns about the Oasis Class at Aspen Heights British School, Al Bahya from Principal Emma Shanahan and about the difference it’s making in the community spen Heights is passionately committed to providing a bespoke, personalised learning programme so that every child makes amazing progress. The school provides a unique offering to parents of children with additional needs – our Oasis Class, which caters for a small group of children, aged 3-7.

HOW DID THE OASIS CLASS COME TO BE?
Having been in educational leadership roles in Abu Dhabi since 2008, I have seen many families with children whose needs could not be met in a mainstream setting. At Aspen, we saw the opportunity to provide a space where all children can thrive.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEACHERS.
We expect all of our teachers to be positive, approachable, observant, patient, calm, and hardworking; these qualities are particularly important when teaching children with additional needs.
SPEECH AND LANGUAGE Make 2020 the year for quality time! Life goes by and children grow up so quickly. Maybe your new year resolution is about taking more time for what matters, prioritize loved ones or put down your phone. Using daily routine and allowing more time to do simple tasks is a great way to purposefully connect, create memories and nurture your child’s language and cognitive development. When you are with your children, notice without judgement what kind of role YOU are taking. Are you: • THE DIRECTORS: Do you plan every activity and do most of the talking? • THE TESTERS: Do you mostly ask questions? • THE ENTERTAINERS: Do you mostly lead and amuse? • THE MOVERS: Are you always in a rush to finish routine activities and tasks?

Creating a Culture of Wellbeing
“ Our ongoing aim is to embed a culture of wellbeing to provide staff, pupils and parents with a platform to ensure the happiness and holistic development of each child."
By Natassja Williams Deputy Head (Wellbeing) Whole School, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Research shows that the educational environment is a major factor in children’s happiness and that positive wellbeing is a prerequisite for learning. As well as academics, educational establishments are becoming more aware of the need to put positive wellbeing at the heart of the curriculum. As happiness in schools moves from an idea to a global initiative, new systems are being put into place to create effective policies and practices. However, this is harder than it sounds. It involves much more than crafting an ethos or wordsmithing a framework of ideals— although this needs to be done. It has to go deeper.
Teepees for reflection Pink Shirt Day - Kindness Day
At Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, pupil, staff and parental wellbeing depends on a strong, values-based culture at its core. Wellbeing can’t just be an add-on or deemed as one initiative; it has to be part of the school DNA and the responsibility of all. Creating a wellbeing culture involves the whole school community. Everyone needs to have a belief that inclusion and positive mental health are just as important as academic studies and that one cannot succeed without the other.
The Programme in Practice
Lessons focusing on mindfulness
Cranleigh Abu Dhabi has been laying the foundations since opening in 2014. For the past six years, we have highlighted and focused on wellbeing and positive mental health in our behavioural systems, policies, structure of the day, routines and rewards process. We have built upon the Moral Education Programme with our own wellbeing framework that overlays the ‘standard’ curriculum, tailored to each year group from Nursery – Sixth Form. Furthermore, weekly 1:1 tutor time includes strategies to help pupils regulate emotions, deal with stress and identify character strengths, enabling them to approach their problems differently and grow in self-confidence.
We have dedicated days for mental health, kindness and wellbeing which are celebrated through activities and guest speakers, engaging pupils of all ages, parents and staff.
Younger years take on the roles of Pre-Prep Listeners, Pre-Prep Voice and Wellbeing Warriors.

GIVE VEGANISM A GO
YALLA EATS
I
Healthy eating is all the rage every January. Though you may be content with just limiting your caloric intake, here are six reasons why you should go vegan in 2020
t’s officially 2020, and every new year brings the promise of New Year’s Resolutions we most likely won’t keep, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Why not set reasonable ones that make a big difference to your health, animals, and the earth? One resolution that may be worth setting is giving veganism a go - and, the good news is that being vegan has never been easier – or as tasty in the capital. Here are six reasons to give veganism a go this year.
IT HELPS ANIMALS
Like us, animals form emotional bonds. It’s common for dairy cows to show signs of extreme distress when they are separated from their young when they are sent away for fattening. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals estimates that every vegan saves nearly 200 animals per year, so there’s no better way to prevent cruelty to animals than opting for a plant-based diet.
TOO MUCH MEAT IS BAD FOR YOU
From high blood pressure and cholesterol to diabetes, eating a diet heavy in meat is not healthy for our bodies. The World Health Organisation (WHO) ranks processed meat alongside smoking as a major cause of cancer. Even if you’re not ready to go completely vegan just yet, try one meat-free day a week and then cutting down on your meat intake to improve your health.
IT'S GOOD FOR YOU
Adopting a vegan diet can help you live a healthier and happier life, whether you want to lose weight or boost your energy levels. Weight loss aside, vegan diets are also beneficial for maintaining overall health. With a carefully planned diet, vegans can get all the nutrients they need to be healthy, such as plant protein, fibre, and minerals.
WHAT IS VEGANUARY? Veganuary is a charity campaign in the UK that encourages people to try being vegan for January and, if possible, throughout the rest of the year. They offer recipes and tools to learn proper nutrition and make healthful, ethical, and delicious meals. Learn more at Veganuary.com

ISN’T BEING VEGETARIAN ENOUGH?
Many vegans say no. The dairy and egg industries facilitate the death of animals, such as cows, when they are no longer of use to the dairy farmer, and most industrial farms keep the animals in horrible conditions. If you’re a vegetarian but want to make the change to vegan, there are plenty of milk alternatives to try.
IT MAY MAKE YOU A BETTER COOK
When you go vegan, you’ll need to pay close attention to what you’re eating to make sure you’re getting enough essential nutrients in your diet, such as protein and iron. There are a host of recipes online to experiment with at home, and Simple Café at Zayed Sports City offers delicious bespoke vegan meal plans if you don’t like to cook.
VEGANS DINE OUT
Vegan food is no longer about mushy quinoa and dry nut roasts— there are now so many options for those on a plant-based diet when they eat out. Many of Abu Dhabi’s favourite restaurants, including Pizza di Rocco, Aqua, and even the Foundry Steakhouse, have also expanded their menu to include delicious vegan-friendly options, so you no longer need to worry about not finding something on the menu.
VEGANUARY IN ABU DHABI
Nahaam will ‘celebrate’ Veganuary by offering a series of Vegan dishes throughout the month of January. Enjoy a healthy dining experience, which includes five vegan dishes packed with fibre, minerals, vitamins, and most importantly flavour! What a better way to start the new year than to embrace vegan living for a month. Here’s a sampling of how good vegan food can sound and taste. Naaham’s vegan menu might appeal to even the most carnivorous. Dishes include, Middle Eastern style hummus, fried Korean cauliflower, steamed dumplings, squash tacos, charred vegetable flatbread, garlic-ginger tofu, and delectable vegan burgers. DINING OUT HEALTHFULLY
YALLA EATS
Though it might seem impossible to dine out healthfully, there are some options. Abu Dhabi’s finest chefs weigh in on how to dine out and be health conscious
SHARE MORE, EAT LESS SARANTOS RAPATAS Chef de Cuisine, Mazi Restaurant
Here are Chef Rapatas’ tips with the bullet points on eating well at home or out in restaurants: 1. Select light appetisers with fresh vegetable salads that are high in fibre. 2. Choose sharing items, so you eat less while still enjoying a variety of food. 3. Avoid deep-fried food. Opt for roasted, steamed, and lightly sautéed preparations. 4. Choose fish dishes rich in Vitamin D and Omega 3s, which are important to promote brain function. 5. Order a dessert that contains less sugars or no added sugar, such as Greek yoghurt with berries.
LIGHTEN UP!
MAKE CALORIES COUNT AT COYA
By the end of January when most have given up on their resolutions, COYA Abu Dhabi will help you stick to healthier eating by introducing a calorie count menu, which details what the diner will be eating and how it will impact their chosen meal plan. Each dish will be labelled with the calories on the menu, so guests can calculate exactly how much they can eat at one sitting. The COYA menu also offers a variety of dishes that complement a number of dietary requirements including chicken tacos and whole seabream which are perfect for those on a gluten free diet, and corn salad and mushroom ceviche which vegans will love for all its plant-based ingredients. WINTER 2020
‘Eating out has become the new ‘normal’ these days as the variety of foods to try out have become more accessible, and chefs have become more creative. While planning what to eat, we must consciously watch out for processed sugars, trans fats, and natural fat consumption. For example, at a steakhouse, you can choose leaner cuts, such as a fillet, in place of high fat content cuts like the rib eye. Opt for lean fish over fattier fish and choose fibrous sides over starchy ones. The quantity of vegetables should be almost half of the weight of the protein on your plate. While fats contribute to the flavour of the dish, they also pack on the kilos. I suggest you try light starters, such as fresh salads before the main course. I used to weigh 90 kilos and brought it down to 74 kilos in just two months by following these basic steps. I set fixed timings for my meals every day. When I feel hungry, I snack on fresh and dry fruits or nuts. I avoided all forms of processed sugars in my diet, including my day’s dose of coffee and tea. I also reduced my carb intake to my daily required limit. I created a sheet of items that I could and could not eat to keep track of my diet plan. I combined this with 15 to 20 minutes of cardio and basic yoga poses that could be easily done at home every day. The journey was not easy to start but it’s been a pleasure to maintain’.

V IS FOR VEGAN
SAMUELE BAUDOINO Head Chef at Rosewood Abu Dhabi 'This past year, I’ve explored the world of veganism. While the health benefits of following this plant-based diet are often discussed, I am more interested in how vegan menus have evolved over the past few years. There is so much room for creativity, especially when it comes to creating similar flavours, textures, and consistencies. To truly understand the possibilities, I took up veganism for a while, so it would be easier to realise how difficult it can be for vegans. I had a lot of fun creating new dishes with a whole new range of ingredients and cooking techniques. I was surprised by the incredible burst of flavours contained within these recipes; so, we launched our ‘V for Vegan’ dinner buffets on Sundays to give everyone the opportunity to sample exciting dishes without compromising on their diet. We see more and more non-vegan consumers try this buffet to explore veganism. My current favourite healthy dish is our delicious grilled eggplant steak with quinoa kale and yuzu dressing’.
HOLY GUACAMOLE!
Avocado’s potential health benefits include improving digestion, decreasing risk of depression, cancer reduction. CHEF MARIO BORTONI from AMERIGOS at the Park Inn on Yas Island loves his recipe for guacamole, a delightfully healthy dip guacamole.
EAT LIKE A TRIATHLETE © Mazi restaurant, Marrriot Hotel Al Forsan, Abu Dhabi
JAIME CASTANEDA General Manager, 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant
‘I lose 5kg every year in preparation for the Triathlon season. I eat out every single day; it’s just a matter of keeping tabs on what I eat. Eating healthy is simpler than people think. Avoid fried items, bread, and try to keep your rice and pasta intake down at dinnertime. Carbs should be eaten only at breakfast and lunch. Go heavy on vegetables and protein for dinner. At restaurants, be wary of rich sauces and mayonnaise. Though they’re tasty, they’re full of calories. A healthy lifestyle is also about exercising regularly. An hour’s walk on a daily basis or 45 minutes of high intensity workouts like CrossFit, cycling, swimming, or jogging goes a long way’.

VEGANS IN STEAKHOUSES
YALLA EATS
Though that might sound like the opening of a bad joke, there are fabulous dining experiences to be had for the vegan curious in the unlikeliest of places and dishes in the city
H
ealthy eating is on most of our minds, so Yalla caught up with Southern Sun Abu Dhabi's executive chef, Damian Kasperczyk, and a hobby baker, The Baking Panda, to learn about the trials and tribulations of vegan cooking.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO WORK VEGAN DISHES INTO A STEAKHOUSE BRUNCH?
Climate change is impending, so more people are choosing to cut out animal products from their diets, opting for vegan alternatives instead. Vegan options can cater to many different customers, such as those with egg and/or lactose intolerances, vegetarians or pescatarians, those with health problems, those with religious practices concerning animal meats, and lastly those pursuing clean eating health trends. Veganism is on the rise, so it makes good sense for chefs to cater to this demand.
LUSCIOUS VEGAN CHEESECAKES
If you hear the word ‘Cheesecake’ and you wrestle with thoughts of ‘yum’ and the workout it will take to burn it off, fear not! The Baking Panda delivers a drool-worthy vegan cheesecake
WAS IT HARD TO CREATE A FULLY VEGAN MENU?
Preparing vegan options is not difficult, but it does require ‘thinking outside of the box’. Therefore, chefs who are already inclined towards health and fitness tend to be more interested in vegan food. In addition, there are many creative suggestions on how to veganise traditional dishes.
WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR VEGAN DISH AT THE FOUNDRY FRIDAY BRUNCH?
It has to be our inspired vegan desserts! We change them every week. Options include rich chocolate mousse, tapioca pearls with apple, coconut mahalabia, and banana fritters.
The Baking Panda is an Abu Dhabi-based hobby baker who makes the tastiest cheesecake in town. This story is about how he came to transform the notoriously naughty dessert into something even those on diets might enjoy. As a young child, El Tourougui was always with his mother in the kitchen. It wasn’t surprising that he started cooking delicious desserts that were simple, fresh, and homemade using only the finest ingredients. As The Baking Panda started taking off, El’s clients from around the entire world started to become more health conscious. While his ingredients are natural and organic, people began asking for vegan and gluten free cheesecakes, so El explored this.
His cakes are always made from2020 scratch 54 WINTER using 100% vegan ingredients, and his vegan cheesecakes turned out to be delicious. The feedback was amazing, and cheesecake lovers were thrilled to learn a vegan lifestyle in Abu Dhabi was super easy and they no longer had to scarfice flavour and texture in their cheesecake! BUILD A VEGAN POKE BOWL
What Is a Poke Bowl, Anyway? If you don't know, now you know. Yalla breaks down the trend and offers a vegan update from Nahaam’s Veganuary menu for the vegan-curious and bold to try at home.
HERE’S HOW TO BUILD AN AVOCADO AND TOFU POKE BOWL AT HOME
'Poke (pronounced “poh-kay”) means ‘to slice’ in Hawaiian. Traditionally, it’s made with the cheaper part of a firm fish, like the head or tail, diced into thick cubes and marinated. The cubed fish is then tossed over rice and topped with vegetables and umami-packed sauces. Think of it as next generation of sushi—just as tasty but easier to eat. Here’s Nahaam's vegan take on the beloved bowl' Oliver Jackson, Chef de Cuisine at Nahaam
Heat a frying pan on the stove with a little olive oil and cook 50g of firm tofu until golden brown. Place steamed brown rice in the bottom of your serving bowl. Top the rice with cooked black beans, prepared vegetables (diced avocado, thinly sliced cucumber, carrots, red cabbage, scallions, and red onion, cooked tofu, and vegan kimchi.

‘The same benefits that a child receives from any sport they will receive from an alternative sport—it’s just a matter of personality and interest’, says Arnaud Laviolette, Extreme Sports Manager at Al Forsan International Sports Resort. ‘The goal is to keep children off their solitary screens and interacting and playing with other kids outside’. There’s no shortage of reasons to get your child involved in any sport. Every parent is aware of the stress of isolation that many kids experience these days due to lack of activities. EQUESTRIAN TALES
HORSE WHISPERER
Abu Dhabi’s legendary ‘Horse Whisperer’, Ali Al Ameri, explains that there are no problem horses—only people who can’t speak their language or read their cues. 'You can’t really speak to a horse', says Al Al Ameri, the founder of Al Rahal Ranch in Al Wathba. “You can only teach a horse some cues. Words don’t mean anything to them’. Though Al Ameri is renowned for his horse whispering. He’s the first to say that this is not what he does at all. With a laugh, he says, ‘have you ever seen a horse talk? No, of course not. We don’t do any whispering here— this is the first misunderstanding of what we do’. So, how then does this Emirati ‘horse whisperer’ train even the most problem horse in 30 minutes, you might wonder? Without hesitation, Al Ameri replies that it’s ‘body language’. And Al Ameri of all people should know. He’s worked his magic on horses in the UK, France, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and the American west. In Montana, he even managed to tame a herd of wild horses that had never had any close contact with humans at all. Learn about the Al Rahal Ranch at Rahalranch.com

So how does he do it? ‘I take cues from the horses. If I stand to the back of his shoulder, it signals him or her to speed up. If I stand in front of his shoulder, it means to slow down,” reveals Ali. ‘I am a student of my horses. They teach me every day, and it makes me better at what I do for it’. ‘How do I do it? I’ve no idea!’ again laughs Ali who has spent his entire life close to animals. ‘I was born in the desert. 'I’ve been working with horses since 1982', he says. 'I used to ride and fix problem camels WINTER 2020even as a child. That’s how I learned about animals’.

LOVERS OF HORSES
If you love horses, the founders of a fantastic stable on the outskirts of town have created a space to fall into equine love on first sight at Mandara Equestrian Club
‘Our love for horses inspired my husband and I to build a weekend house and a horse stable for our six horses on a piece of land away from the busy city. Before the house was completed, friends convinced us to start a small riding school on the property, and we did. Soon, riders were thirsty and hungry, so we started serving some basic refreshments for them. Slowly but surely, it developed into a full-fledged restaurant. Our Mandara Equestrian Club hosts currently a total of 124 horses, and the love keeps growing. To all our Café Mandarina friends, never doubt that when you visit, you are sitting right in our ‘home living room’. Welcome home!’ With Love, Faysal & Juwayryah Urfali
ANOTHER LOVE STORY
The Urfali's love for nature and sustainable food encouraged them to build a farmhouse on the land neighbouring the Mandara Equestrian Club. At Mandara Farms, they follow their passion by promoting agriculture systems that are chemical free. They think ‘local first’ and focus on family and community building. They aim to bring ‘seeds of freedom’ to your table. So, enjoy Mandara Farms organically grown seasonal produce at Café Mandarina where authentic nourishing food is of the essence! #FarmToFork

YALLA SHOPPING
The Heart of the City:
ABU DHABI MALL
Perfectly situated in the center of the city, Abu Dhabi Mall is not just a mall; it's a shopping and dining destination filled with surprises and energy in every corner
After a tour around the mall and the kids having bounced, climbed and had their shot at laser tag, it's quite easy to build up an appetite. There are many options to choose from whether you want something fast and easy at the food court or prefer a casual sit-down restaurant. Favourites such as PF Changs, Paul, Chili's and Zaatar W Zeit are scattered around the mall as well as not as as readily available around Abu Dhabi favourites such as Famous Dave's, Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Wagamama.
Located in the heart of the city, close to the Corniche, next door to Maryah Island and just over the bridge from Saadiyat, the mall is in an ideal location and accessible. The once chaotic and construction filled area is now paved, landscaped and perfectly manicured to gain you easy access in and out of the mall.
Tummies full and in need of something lower key, we decide to kick back, relax and check out the newest Vox Cinema. Renovated and revamped, the cinema is smaller in size, however offers everything you need from all the latest movies on offer to all the treats and goodies you need while watching the latest blockbuster. Because of the smaller size of the theatre, we found it nice and quiet and not having to deal with the usual rush you get at some of the larger theaters in town.
Xtreme Zone and Fun City are the two main entertainment centres in the mall which provide kids of all ages with plenty to do and keep them active. While Fun City is geared more towards younger children with games, rides and a soft play area, Xtreme Zone is perfect for the older set who are looking for a little more energy. A big trampoline park awaits children of all ages alongside a rock-climbing wall which will provide hours of active play and fun for your little ones. There is a coffee shop on site where parents can relax while your kids lash out all their energy. If your children are of an older age—mine are 9 and 10, you can drop them off to play (you need to sign a waiver) and roam the mall which is an added bonus.

efore malls started popping up at virtually every corner of the capital, there was always one that Abu Dhabi residents, and tourists alike, relied on and still do. With an exciting array of exclusive and revamped outlets, Abu Dhabi Mall is going through a reawakening that you need to come see and experience on your own. We spent a day at this Abu Dhabi institution and discovered there is so much to do here that you cannot find anywhere else in the city.

YALLA HEALTHCARE
TRUST YOUR GUT
Danat Al Emarat’s resident paediatric gastroenterologist, Dr Kamal Hassan, explains to Yalla parents common digestive health issues in children and when it’s time to see a doctor
C
The main function of the digestive system in children is safe intake and utilisation of food to provide adequate fluids, nutrition, and growth. Normal digestive health should reflect as normal ability to chew and swallow food, normal digestion and absorption of nutrients leading to good health and growth.
HAT ARE THE MOST COMMON W DIGESTIVE ISSUES KIDS FACE?
The most common digestive problems in children are vomiting, diarrhea, recurrent abdominal pain, failure to thrive (poor weight gain and growth), and chronic constipation.
WHAT ARE SIGNS OF POOR DIGESTION IN KIDS?
Parents are advised to look for the symptoms mentioned above and seek medical advice early if they suspect there is a problem.
WHAT CAN A PAEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGIST DO?
The gastroenterologist assesses the condition after taking a comprehensive medical history and performing a careful physical examination. He/she will also plot the weight and the height of the child on the growth chart to make sure that both are appropriate for the child’s age. After the initial assessment, the gastroenterologist will decide if there is a need to arrange an

investigation to rule out the possibility of an organic problem. The most common investigations are blood and stool tests, abdominal ultrasounds, contrast radiological images of the digestive tract, and endoscopies. Therapy will be given following the clinical assessment and the results of the investigations.
WHEN IS A CHILD CONSIDERED CONSTIPATED?
Constipation is generally described as having fewer than three bowel movements a week.
WHAT ADVICE COULD YOU PROVIDE ABOUT NUTRIENTS AND GROWTH?
M
obvious cause but sometimes it can be due Y to cow’s milk protein allergy, so a period free of dairy products is worth trying. If the CM mother is breastfeeding, she should cut dairy out of her diet. If the baby is bottle fed, MY a hypoallergenic formula should be used. CY The protein in such formulas is broken down CMY to very small peptides or amino acids that are easily absorbed without causing allergy. K There is no evidence that anti-colic herbal therapies like a Gripe water are of much help. Parents should also remember that not all crying in infants is due to colic and other causes of excessive crying could include hunger, cold, heat, tiredness, or a wet nappy.
This depends on the child’s age and nutrition and if there is an underlying medical condition. A diet should contain adequate amounts of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and trace elements. If necessary, familes will be referred to a dietitian for an assessment and proper advice.
NEWBORNS CAN SUFFER FROM COLIC. HOW CAN PARENTS HELP?
Colic often manifests as excessive crying and appears to be due to abdominal pain. Typically, the crying episodes can last for more than three hours a day, three days a week, and for three weeks in an otherwise healthy child. It's a common problem during a newborn's first four months and is called infantile colic. Usually, there's no

HEALTHCARE DID YOU KNOW?
If your child suffers from snoring or has trouble sleeping, he or she might be suffering from an allergy that affects many children in the region.
One of the most surprising allergens to people in the UAE is the ubiquitous date palm tree. Not many people know that this common tree has such a high pollen count. The pollen from the date palm tree causes irritation to a large percentage of the population, and, to some, it’s highly allergenic. Consult your physician if you are feeling stuffy, and you suspect the palm tree may be the culprit.

YALLA COMMUNITY
FACEBOOK GROUPS: IN FOCUS
One way to network in Abu Dhabi is to join a facebook group. Whether you love social media or not, Gina Dillon, Super Admin for Facebook, explains why the social media giant will always be relevant
YOU HAVE STARTED AND/OR ADMIN HOW MANY FACEBOOK GROUPS IN ABU DHABI?
I have 5 community groups that I have created and admin. FreeCycle Abu Dhabi, FreeCycle Dubai, Abu Dhabi Kids, UAE Housemaids, and WEADS (Women Entrepreneurs Abu Dhabi).
HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR WORK ON FACEBOOK?
Basically, boredom and a passion for giving back to my community. I also thrive on making improvements. I arrived in Abu Dhabi in the summer of 2011. I didn’t know anyone; I was stuck in a hotel room all day while my husband was at work and my son was in school. My degrees are in Community Development and Critical/Creative Problem Solving/Innovation and my focus of study was how social media could be used for social good so I put my skills to work to improve the community while plugging myself into my new life.
WHAT ROLE DOES FACEBOOK NOW PLAY IN OUR COMMUNITY?
In the beginning, Facebook was vital to the community because the online infrastructure was almost nonexistent. You couldn’t find information from company websites etc. We relied upon learning from each other. Things are far more developed now but Abu Dhabi is still a very close-knit community and I think we have Facebook to thank for bringing us all together. We are such a rich and diverse community and Facebook allows us to showcase this extremely unique mix that makes the Abu Dhabi community so wonderful and I am very lucky to have the platform that allows me to help make Abu Dhabi a better place for all of us.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR PERSONALITY UNIQUELY SUITS YOU TO THIS TYPE OF WORK?
I am a very curious person and my real passion is making things better. I love to improve things and create things that benefit society. I come from a long line of activists. My mother has been the mayor of my hometown for 20 years. She is the person who gets things done. I think I inherited it.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACE IN YOUR ROLE? Addressing all of the concerns of members. FreeCycle Abu Dhabi has over 65,000 members and sometimes dealing with the fallout between the givers and the receivers can be tedious. “Someone promised 8 pans but I only received 5”….”the blanket they gave me was dirty”…..basic human communication issues. Sometimes the situations are funny, sometimes they are annoying and sometimes they break my heart.
ADMINING IS A LOT OF WORK, OFTEN UNPAID AND ARDUOUS. WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING AT THE JOB ON TOUGH DAYS?
Recently there was a young family whose baby was born with severe digestive issues. I think it touched my heart because I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease as a young child so I somewhat understand the issues he will face in life. They were uninsured, which I have struggled with in life as well, and they needed supplies not covered by insurance. The FreeCycle community stepped up and provided above and beyond the items they needed. There are so many stories such as this one. It’s always good to see people pulling together to make life better for someone else. It’s what feeds our soul.
WHY DO YOU DO IT?

It’s part of my belief system. I believe the seeds we plant today lead to a healthier tomorrow. I don’t do it for recognition. I do it because it needs to be done. It fulfills an essential role in the community and it makes life better for people in need while teaching the community about the importance of caring for our community and our environment. It’s a win-win.
