SUMMER CAMPS

8 REASONS TO FIND A CAMP

On the fence about sending your child to a costly summer camp? Here are eight great reasons why Abu Dhabi's summer camps are worth every fil!

C

amps are fun, and they are important to your child’s growth. In a world gone tech crazy, sometimes the great outdoors is just that: great. Yalla offers 8 reasons why every child should go to camp.

EXPOSURE TO DIVERSITY

Camp connects kids to those who they may not normally meet. Kids learn the world is a bigger place with lots of people outside of their school or neighbourhood.

natural leadership training is offered. These kids are less likely to be affected by peer pressure and more likely to set the pace and tone for other kids.

MAKES WONDERFUL MEMORIES

Camp builds good memories and allows kids to enjoy the summer with fun activities and making new friends. It’s a time of discovery and self-improvement that stays with kids well into adulthood.

GETS THEM ACTIVE

Camp helps kids learn how to be kids again. In this technology-filled world, camps cut back on distractions. Most camps effectively ban mobile phones and devices, so kids can truly take full advantage of all that summertime has to offer.

DEVELOPS INTERESTS

Camps are a nurturing environment for a child to explore activities and programmes that could turn into lifelong passions. With so much to do at summer camp (archery, swimming, arts & crafts, etc.), there are many fun activities for kids to discover.

BOOSTS SELF-ESTEEM

When kids are at camp, they don’t have mum and dad there to help them approach people and make connections. They have to put themselves out there. This teaches the kids confidence when making new friends.

ATTUNE TO NATURE

Kids today spend much less time outdoors, causing a “nature deficit.” But camp reconnects them with nature, seeing things like plants and animals in person or experiencing swimming in a sea or biking along a path.

DEVELOPS INDEPENDENCE

Camps encourage self-development and also develop independence. Kids are empowered at camp to take care of themselves, with guidance from camp counsellours. Daily itineraries are set and schedules are packed, and children must show up with a great attitude.

INSTILS LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Summer camps teach kids important leadership skills. Because camps allow kids to make choices and direct summer projects,

TURTLE TIME

TURTLE TIME

A

Marine Biologist Emily Armstrong talks turtles with Yalla and explains how the summer months mark nesting season for sea turtles across Abu Dhabi beaches, and why Saadiyat Island is a popular spot with our hard-shelled friends!

world away from the city at times, Saadiyat Beach is magical; with its glassy water, dolphins passing by and glittering soft sands. This naturally beautiful stretch is loved by tourists and residents alike, but there is an even more important regular visitor – the Hawksbill sea turtle. Over the spring and summer months, from March to July, adult female turtles come to Saadiyat Beach to nest, trusting the dunes to safeguard their eggs and protect the nests until the hatchlings are ready to emerge. But with growing visitors to the beach, these turtles need a little help along the way to make sure the nests are well-cared for and have the best chance of survival.

for any signs of disturbance, and then around 60 days later keep their fingers crossed in the hopes of a successful hatching event! The adult female will never return to her nest once she has laid her eggs; the hatchlings are born with an instinct to break out of their eggs deep in the sand and crawl towards the water. There, they swim to their nearest feeding grounds and begin their journey in the ocean. Saadiyat had seen a decrease in nesting activity in recent years, with no activity spotted in 2018 and very little the year before. 2019 however, has been an incredible year and the Turtle Patrol team have successfully protected a total of 6 nests so far – who knows how many are still to come before the season is over!

Enter Emily Armstrong — a Marine Biologist based at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort — coordinating local efforts to record and conserve turtle nesting activity. Beach access is restricted at night, so every morning at sunrise Emily and the amazing ‘Turtle Patrol’ team of community volunteers head onto the beach, to search for any evidence of turtle activity from the night before. This ‘evidence’ can be found in the form of turtle tracks – marks on the sand across the beach leading to and from the shore. If there are tracks, there may be a nest; if there is a nest then the team will record important data for the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, and mark the area to avoid any disruption to the underlying eggs in the sand.

TURTLE TIME

DID YOU KNOW?

• Hawksbill turtles are considered critically endangered on the IUCN red list.

• Adult sea turtles come to land to nest every 2-3 years and can lay multiple (3-4) nests in one season. • An average nest will hold 80-100 eggs, though not every egg will produce a successful hatchling. Small hatchlings have a tough start in life, with an estimated 1 in 1000 surviving to adulthood! • Temperature in the nest determines species – warmer nests produce more females, and cooler nests produce more males. • Hawksbill nest incubation period is around 60 days. When ready, the hatchlings emerge from the nest at night, all together. • Sea turtles will return to the beach they hatched from to lay their eggs – so we can hope to see these same turtles in years to come!

W

YALLA ART & CULTURE

hen visual artist and trained architect Budour Al Ameri started painting Abu Dhabi’s most iconic buildings, she had no idea her work would find an audience so fast, but that’s just what happened. She studied architecture at Sharjah American University, works full time in Abu Dhabi’s Department of Urban Planning, and managed to bear five beautiful children, all while processing Abu Dhabi’s soaring skyline through the prism of her impressionistic painting style. Her paintings acknowledge the built environment yet creatively transcend architectural design.

WHEN DID YOU BEGIN PAINTING? I have painted or drawn since I was a very small child, and my parents were very nurturing of my talent.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU ABOUT YOUR CITY’S SKYLINE?

Well, I have always loved architecture, and the architecture in the UAE is, of course, amazing. My passion for architecture fuels my desire to paint. I love turning my impressionistic style onto the city’s iconic buildings and reimagining them artistically. The buildings to me, are already works of art, so I try to put my own spin on what I see as existing artwork so people can see what I see when I look at them.

WHAT IS YOUR MEDIUM?

I work mostly with acrylics. I love how they dry fast so I can work quickly. When things are quiet, which isn’t often when you have five children, Budour says with a laugh with which every mum can empathise, I can make one of these skyline paintings in three or so days. Acrylics just work better for the pace at which I have to work to manage my life.

YOUR PAINTINGS ARE AT ONCE SUBDUED GREYS AND BLUES AND THEN HOT PINK. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED COLOUR PALETTE?

That’s easy! I love colour, but I understand that not everyone wants bold colours on their walls, so I try to make a variety of colour schemes to suit everyone’s home and tastes.

DO YOU EVER SEE YOURSELF WORKING AS A FULLTIME ARTIST?

I also love interior design. I dream of the day when I can paint full time and then possibly design beautiful décor that will complement my artwork on the walls. Follow Budour on Instagram @budour.design

ONE LINE PERSPECTIVE

YALLA KIDS

-

Ari Puguh is an illustrator who works in a style he refers to as “One-Line Drawing.” Yalla learns more about him, such as his favourite animals, what he was like as a kid, and how you can try your hand at a one-line drawing!

WHEN HE WAS A CHILD

I was a curious kid who loved everything new, to create crafts and experiment with art that I usually saw on the children’s magazines/TV shows. My family did not really understand the general idea of art, so they always questioned why I created such weird stuff.

FAVOURITE ANIMALS

Dogs, elephants, and dolphins!

JOB

I work as an illustrator at Alef Education, an educational technology company, and as a visual artist.

WHAT HE DOES

Turning ideas into visuals. I create, I draw, and illustrate—it’s a fun job.

GREW UP IN

A small town in Indonesia.

FAVOURITE PASTIME AS A KID

Hanging out with my late mum, daydreaming about life, and drawing.

HERO

My late Mum.

TYPICAL DAY

Planning and journaling what I have to do today and creating beautiful visuals! Preproduction and excellent preparation are always important!

BEST ADVICE

If art is something that you want to do, practise. You’ll soon learn whether it’s what you want to do. Have a growth mindset and open mind, be open to new opportunities, go for your dreams, and have a clear goal.

When I don’t know what to draw, I warm up with a random scribble. During creative blocks, I see those scribbles in different ways; I see them as something that could be developed, a pile of creatures hugging each

The philosophy behind my closed-eyes characters is that when you close your eyes, you listen to your heart and inner voices more. WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO SUCH BOLD COLOURS

People are very diverse. Many people like bright colours while others prefer a monochromatic tone. I have always been fascinated by bright colours! I don’t know why I like them, but I do know that they stimulate my mood in a positive way and help me to send my message.

SUMMER IN THE CITY

YALLA TEENS

A

Most teens have left town and the temperature has skyrocketed, what’s a teen to do? Harriet McCreanor shares her thoughts on a teen’s summer in the city! s school winds down and summer plans chatter echoes through hallways, many of us are getting ready to jet off to another country. However, for those of us who are not travelling for the summer, it can sometimes be difficult to find activities to do, especially with many friends being abroad. Harriet McCreanor offers some Yalla Teen thoughts on the coolest spots to hang out during the summertime nearest to your school!

AL BATEEN ACADEMY

Whether you choose to take a 25-minute walk or opt for the 7-minute ride in a car, you can enjoy the experience of the Art House Café. Not only do they have an expansive range of cold drinks that are perfect for a hot day, but they also have great, reasonably priced options for a small snack after school and lots of artwork that you can look at with friends.

AMERICAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Full of refreshing drinks and snacks, the Third Place Café is an 11-minute walk away from ACS and is the meeting spot of choice for the school’s students. Not only are their menu items offered at a discounted price for the school’s students and parents, but also the environment in the café is relaxed, making it a lovely place to spend to chill out after a hectic day at school.

BRIGHTON COLLEGE

After only a 7-minute walk, you will find yourself at District 10 Café. You will find plenty of options to choose from, ranging from coffee to iced tea. It is the perfect place to hang out with friends after school or, if you wish to go alone, you can also enjoy their book corner.

BRITISH SCHOOL AL KHUBAIRAT

If you go to BSAK and are looking for a place to relax with friends after a busy school day, Café Arabia is perfect for you. A short walk across Umm Al Emarat Park, you can treat yourself to one of the many pastries they have available. They also sell a wide variety of drinks, such as coffee and iced teas, and juices, perfect options for a hot summer day.

CRANLEIGH SCHOOL ABU DHABI

If you live on Saadiyat Island and go to Cranleigh, your summer hangout might already be the nearby Manarat Al Saadiyat Cultural Centre. There are amazing exhibitions to explore, a photography and an art studio, and let’s not forget LARTE for amazing lattes, pizza, pasta and nibbles. What more could a teen want in a hangout?

SUMMER MUST-READS FOR TEENS

Looking for a new great book for your teen? Eighth grade English teacher Jessica Forslund offers the summer’s hottest reads for bookworms.

I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson This was a compelling story of first love, identity, guilt, and family loyalty. Alternating chapters switched from Noah's experience during the summer between 7th and 8th grade, and his twin sister Jude's experience during the fall of her junior year in high school.

Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abdel Fattah Sixteen-year-old Amal makes the decision to start wearing the hijab full time and everyone has a reaction; her parents, teachers, friends, and people on the street. But she stands by her decision to embrace her faith, even if it does make her a little different from everyone else.

Ghost by Jason Reynolds Running. That's all that Ghost (real name Castle Cranshaw) has ever known. But never for a track team. Nope, his game has always been ball. But when Ghost impulsively challenges an elite sprinter to a race -- and wins -- the Olympic medallist track coach sees he has something: crazy natural talent.

Slacker by Gordon Korman Cameron Boxer is very happy to spend his life avoiding homework, hanging out with his friends, and gaming for hours in his basement. It's not too hard for him to get away with it . . . until he gets so caught up in one game that he almost lets his house burn down around him.

BIG NEWS AT CHILDREN’S HOUSE

Choosing a preschool is no small feat, especially in Abu Dhabi where there are so many options. Children’s House Montessori founder Maya Zebib explains the benefits of the Montessori method to Yalla.

C

hildren’s House Montessori (CHM) opened in 2015 in Khalifa City to bring a Montessori education to children and to provide an outstanding quality care. Children's House Montessori has recently received successful accreditation by the Montessori Evaluation and Accreditation Board (MEAB), and Yalla is excited to share the news with parents!

WHY DID YOU BECOME A PRESCHOOL OWNER?

Children’s House Montessori is a natural growth in my career path following many years in early years’ education and Montessori settings, both in the UK and the UAE. I wanted to make a difference by bringing a true Montessori pedagogy into Khalifa City.

HOW IS CHM DIFFERENT FROM OTHER NURSERY SCHOOLS?

At CHM, we believe that children develop and learn best when they feel secure and happy in a structured environment. A typical day at CHM is unique as we follow the vision of Maria Montessori by giving the freedom of choice for our children to explore their rich environment within the daily three hours’ work cycle. We offer free-flow movement for our children; they are encouraged to make their choices and celebrate their independence while they build their confidence. The prepared environment and the teachers play an important role in supporting the development of the child. Through constant observations and planning, we give the children different opportunities to develop and learn, gain confidence, and believe in their own potentials. We prepare them not just for school but for life.

Launched in 2008, with the assistance of the British Accreditation Council and Independent Schools Inspectorate, MEAB is a world leader in Montessori accreditation. The MEAB Awards are an acknowledgement of settings' achievements in identifying and delivering Montessori best practice for the children in their care. On Wednesday, 5 June 2019, Children's House Montessori was awarded its first Montessori accreditation through the MEAB

awards. We are proud that Children's House Montessori achieved this award, and this means that our setting is now accredited for the next three years. The award recognises the hard work and commitment of all our teachers and support staff in delivering quality Montessori education. It is an honour and a true

testament to the dedication of the CHM Team to help each child reach their full potential. Learn more about the Montessori Method provided by Children’s House Montessori at Thechildrenshousemontessori.com

YALLA EDUCATION

STAYING ENGAGED IN THE SUMMER

K

The two months of the summer holidays can seem like a daunting prospect for a lot of Abu Dhabi parents. Yalla and Gabbitas Education are here to help!

eeping your children engaged through the summer months can often require lots of organisation. Gabbitas Education Adviser Sophie Oakes says the earlier you think about it the better and shares some of her favourite picks of things happening in Abu Dhabi this summer. The change from the rigours of the school timetable to endless unstructured days can put a lot of parents into a panic. It is also about bridging the gap between the end of the summer term and the start of a new academic year in September. It is important to keep children engaged over the summer months so that when they go back to school, they have not forgotten how to learn and all that was taught to them before the summer! Here are just some ideas of how to keep your children busy and stimulated during the hot summer months:

QASR AL WATAN PALACE

Qasr Al Watan is a new experience for you and your family in the UAE. The palace offers unique insight into the Arab heritage and the principles that shaped the history of the United Arab Emirates and its vision to the future. As you walk through the majestic hallways your family will experience an enriching journey reflecting on governance, knowledge and craftsmanship that celebrates the region’s rich Arabic heritage. This promises to be a special experience for the whole family with insights into the wonderful country you live in. Qasralwatan.ae

A NEW CHALLENGE

The summer holidays are always the best opportunity to try something new. Why doesn’t each member of the family set themselves a challenge and try and complete it by the end of the summer? It could be learning to juggle or learning to touch type to running 5 kilometres or playing a certain piece on an instrument. There could be a prize for the best achiever. Other ideas could be reading a certain amount of books, learning to monocycle, conversing in a language to cooking a meal! There are plenty of things to stimulate children at home other than the inevitable computer games. Learning to cook can be a very creative (and messy) occupation. Encourage students to get out of their comfort zone and prepare a meal. Obviously this is all age appropriate but it can encourage the creative juices to flow. There is a definite satisfaction to this and once learned never forgotten. Create a treasure hunt for your siblings and friends. The clues can be as easy or difficult depending on the age group. It is harder than you think and requires logic and organisation to create a good hunt.

If they haven’t already been, then a day at the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a must. The main exhibition over the summer features fabulous photographs from all over the world.

Gabbitas Education are experts in helping you and your child find their pathway to success. For more information, contact us on consultant@gabbitas.ae or 04 451 6933

A great activity to suggest is to have your child write to someone back in their home country and tell them about it, that would really give a child the opportunity to think about what they had enjoyed and why. The gift shop usually sells postcards with images from the exhibition too! Louvreabudhabi.ae

21 CENTURY SURVIVAL SKILLS

YALLA EDUCATION

ST

Ask anyone about education reform and their eyes tend to glaze over. But ask them about their own education, or the education of their children, and they pin you to the wall. Educator Tom Fletcher explains how we are all educators, and we are all learners.

Too often we fail to spark the delight and magic of learning. What is taught is not connected to the demands of the future economy. We stubbornly force feed kids what we ourselves learnt, without recognising how different their lives will be. Content and assessment persistently focus on classic academic knowledge rather than character and skills. Many states control education systems to reinforce existing hierarchies rather than help young people build networks of global citizens. Most children in the world are taught in factory schools, and a staggering 75 million are not receiving any formal education at all. Six out of ten young people can’t read or add up. Half of all students in higher education drop out before they graduate, and half of the subject knowledge acquired during the first year of a tech degree is outdated by the student's graduation date. This has consequences. A generation on

32

SUMMER 2019

the move will not be equipped with the skills they need. Polarisation, extremism, inequality, and distrust will increase. The next Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, or Bill Gates may not get the opportunity to move humanity forward. We are more likely to work for the robots than have them work for us. Fail to educate people about the wisdom of coexistence and we will get more wall builders and war-makers. The most important knowledge that we can pass on is on how humans have developed, from cave paintings to driver-less cars. How have we learnt to live together? And what do we need to understand about the planet that we inhabit? The key skills are also threefold. How can we learn, and keep on learning? How can we adapt to a world in which industries will disappear, and where we will need to work more closely together across cultures and societies? How can we manage our mental and physical health, and organise our lives?

education. We need to create new coalitions for change. These include pioneering educators and governments; the businesses that want to see people better equipped with the right skills; the parents who want their children to thrive. And most importantly young people themselves, who can lead the next learning Renaissance. We are on the cusp of a great leap forward in not just what we learn, but how and why we learn. We have a responsibility to allow young people to achieve their potential. More humans should learn the right things in the right way. We hear much about 21 st century education. But the idea was there over two millennia ago. Socrates said that “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel”. Together we can kindle that flame. Learn more about Tom at tomfletcher.global

And finally, character. Most importantly, how can we become sufficiently kind, curious, and brave? These are the questions that education needs to answer. They will create greater equality of opportunity, ensure that humans can develop the skills needed to thrive in a new economy, and make it easier for people on the move to adapt.

F

ollowing the interview in last season's Yalla Magazine, a number of people asked for more information on the skills we need to develop in order to thrive in the 21st century. Our team spent two years looking at the best ideas out there, and asking leaders, sports people, role models and pioneers for their advice for future generations. The short version is that the new survival skills are a mixture of the head, hand, and heart - knowledge, skills, and character.

At its core, this is a challenge of politics not

MEET LIA Lia is from Auckland, NZ but was born in Abu Dhabi and she has been living here ever since. She attends Brighton College Abu Dhabi and is an accomplished swimmer and a talented artist.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO VISIT KIP MCGRATH AND WHAT IS YOUR LONG-TERM GOAL FOR LIA?

We found Kip McGrath Center on the web, also our family in Melbourne made us aware that Kip McGrath is a very well-known education center worldwide.

HOW DOES LIA FIND THE SESSIONS?

Lia finds it very engaging and enjoys the focus on practical application, the use of technology adds a lot of interest to the session, and perhaps most importantly, she is very comfortable with the teacher, Ms. Holly, with whom she developed a very close and professional relationship.

WHAT IS SHE CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

In maths, Lia is developing her skills, especially with complex mathematical problem solutions. She is also currently level 8 (final stage) of her mental maths course. In English, she is focusing on improving her grammar and vocabulary skills.

HAVE YOU SEEN LIA’S CONFIDENCE CHANGE?

Since joining Kip McGrath, Lia's confidence has been boosted especially in academics and her interest in learning. Her focus is on reading and current affairs.

HAVE YOU SEEN ANY PROGRESS?

Her term two report showed that in all of her subjects she achieved above expectation results. We proudly shared her last report with her Kip McGrath teacher. Since joining, her academic performance in school has significantly improved especially in English and maths.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY ABOUT YOUR KIP MCGRATH EXPERIENCE?

We will continue sending Lia to Kip, especially now we have started math sessions. We encourage all parents to start with KipMcGrath as we have seen first-hand the significant improvement in academic performance of our daughter. Over 40 years ago, Kip McGrath understood that every child learns differently and developed a methodology to help children to catch up and keep up in the core areas of English and Maths. Now, Kip McGrath Education Centres continues to tutor primary and secondary students to help them reach their full potential. Various locations. uae.kipmcgrath.com

PARADISE FOUND! YALLA TRAVEL

Summer is here, so Yalla is exploring the emirates. In our new travel section, we plan to take you around the UAE in seven emirates. Meet Ras Al Khaimah, fondly referred to as RAK by expat locals.

W

ith over 7,000 years of fascinating history and culture and year long sunshine, Ras Al Khaimah is the perfect getaway from everyday city life and a mere 3 hours from Abu Dhabi. Offering magnificent landscapes, breathtaking coastlines and rich, burnt orange desert dunes, the emirate has firmly established itself as the UAE’s most authentic destination in the Middle East. Families this summer should flock to the DoubleTree by Hilton Resort and Spa on Al Marjan Island. This spot has everything! Not only is it a foodie’s paradise, but also it has so much to do families will be spoilt for choices and ways to work up the unusually large appetite that you will need in order to dine around the 13 restaurants on site.

THE CHECK IN

Every visit to any Doubletree by Hilton hotel in the world is met with a warm welcome—a literally fresh from the oven warm chocolatechip cookie welcome — a time-honoured and yummy hotel tradition.

Our family stayed in two adjoining BayClub King rooms, and they couldn’t have been more family-friendly. Not lacking in any creature comforts, the aesthetically pleasing rooms had lush carpets, a generous work area for those on a working holiday, and a beautiful balcony that looks out onto the inviting Arabian Sea.

WHAT TO DO

If your family loves the water, this resort is the place for you. There are a variety of water activities to choose from, including the resort’s unique floating playground, which has a high-dive launch and a rope swing. Younger kids have their own share of activities with water slides, a sea swing, and a host of other fun games.

WHERE TO EAT

For families, one factor in where to stay is always food, because kids are finicky and not all restaurants cater to them. We began and ended our stay with an Asian fusion feast at Sanchaya, which was our family’s favourite restaurant at the resort. We are partial to Asian, but if you’re not, don’t worry! The resort’s culinary offerings also feature Vespa (Italian), Meze (Turkish) and Brasserie (French-European) as well as it’s all-day dining restaurant Al Marjan. From a family perspective, Al Marjan at breakfast was a real hit. Though we have no special requirements for this meal, we saw the chef going from table-to-table to ask diners if there was any particular food that they would like that they didn’t see at the buffet. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and we did notice many parents of young children taking the chef up on his offer, noticing that he even disappeared off into the kitchen to whip up some baby food for a worried new mother.

HERE ARE SOME FUN REASONS WHY RAK SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF YOUR UAE STAYCATION LISTS

We also tried Vespa and Brasserie. We were impressed with how fresh all the ingredients were, how it all tasted home-made yet gourmet, as well as how much they enjoyed finding menu items that our children would devour, which they did. The resort also has a few nighttime establishments with outdoor seating areas and a beautiful view for parents looking for evening entertainment after the kids have gone to sleep.

.. The Arabic name ‘Ras Al Khaimah’ means “top of the tent,” referring to its location in the northern most tip of the UAE. .. Ras Al Khaimah is home to Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE. At 1,910 metres, this peak is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and now the intrepid can summit the peak and then zip line down for impressive views during their hurtling descent.

THE CONCLUSION

As we packed our bags, we left collectively thinking that this resort’s attributes were certainly the food and the beautiful location. In our sampling of just a few of the 14 restaurants, a staycation here is a food lover’s dream and far from the usual resort fare. Great service, amazing chefs, and fresh ingredients are each restaurant’s strengths. In addition, Al Marjan Island itself is swiftly becoming a top destination for families in Ras Al Khaimah. The property seems to strike that welcoming balance of feeling at home to every kind of traveller, be it large families, couples, or guests who want premium attention in an excellent location. Summer rates starts from AED 455 net including breakfast for 2. Kids under 12 stay for free. Call +971 7 203 0000 for more information.

yallaabudhabi.ae

.. Be properly spooked when you visit the abandoned fishing village of Al Jazirat Al Hamra. It’s a reminder of the simplicity of local life before the oil. .. Ras Al Khaimah has an impressive 62km of white sandy beaches with clear turquoise water and watersports aplenty. .. Ras Al Khaimah National Museum offers history enthusiasts a traditional weapons display as well as archaeological displays showing the earliest settlers and objects from the Bronze era. .. Ahmad Bin Majid was an Arab cartographer born in Ras Al Khaimah in 1421 and is considered the first Arab seaman and famous for helping Vasco da Gama navigate his way from Africa to India.

YALLA HEALTHCARE

WHEN TO SEE A PSYCHOLOGIST

If you're unsure about a family member's behaviour, consult a psychologist. Virginie Mebarak offers some useful insight to worried parents. centred approach to those facing difficulties with their well-being. Our team consists of a psychiatrist, psychologists, a mental health nurse, and a dietician who were selected for their professionalism and passion for what they do, as well as their cultural capabilities.

Life rarely comes without challenges, and we often are able to manage them on our own. However, there are instances which may be overbearing. You may need the expertise of a psychologist if you or your problem causes a significant distress in your life, if you feel stuck and nothing you have done seems to help. You may also seek professional help when it feels like your emotions, behaviours, or thoughts are out of your control, if you feel unhappy and unsatisfied with your life, or if you suffer from a trauma, and someone you love is concerned about you.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE A SEVERE PROBLEM?

People accessing counselling services do not necessarily have severe or chronic mental disorders. Many clients are looking for opportunities to improve their lives and careers. In a collaborative manner, a therapist provides an evidence-based strategy to help clients enhance their knowledge of themselves and foster some adjustments to their best human potential.

SHOULD I EXPECT TO LIE DOWN ON A COUCH TO TALK ABOUT THE WAY I WAS BROUGHT UP?

This is not what actually happens. The modern psychological approach focuses on client current’s issues and it is conducted as a face-to-face conversation. The therapy is oriented toward scientific knowledge,

skills enhancement, tools mastery that you can use on a daily basis. The first therapy session is primarily an information-gathering session, similar to any other kind of health care appointment. While a primary care physician focuses mainly on physiological signs, a therapist explores psychological, emotional, and behavioural functioning in a collaborative, non-judgemental, and respectful manner.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PSYCHOLOGIST AND A PSYCHIATRIST?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental illness. A psychiatrist's training starts with medical school and is followed by specialized training in psychiatry. A psychiatrist can prescribe medications. A psychologist, on the other hand, has a university degree in psychology, which is the study of the mind and behaviours. Licensed psychologists are qualified to do counselling and psychotherapy, perform psychological testing, and provide talking treatment for mental disorders. Psychologists and psychiatrists often work closely together to provide a multi-disciplinary comprehensive approach.

HEALTHCARE DID YOU KNOW?

If your child suffers from snoring or has trouble sleeping, he or she might be suffering from an allergy that affects many children in the region, says Dr. Hani Rifai (Specialist, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)) at HealthPlus Children’s Specialty Center and Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children. “One of the most surprising allergens to my patients is the date palm,” says Dr. Hani. “Not many people know that this common tree has such a high pollen count, and this time of year, it causes irritation to a large percentage of the population, and, to some, it’s highly allergenic.”

YALLA COMMUNITY

AusBG: IN FOCUS

One way to network in Abu Dhabi is to join a business group. Whether you hail from Australia or not, Kate Midttun explains why the Australian Business Group (AusBG) is a great place to get connected. up. Some are already based in the UAE and looking for networking opportunities, others are coming in from Australia and want to be introduced to people who can enable them. We have members that are well placed to help companies with anything from company establishment, legal frameworks, financial planning, marketing, through to strategy and exit planning. This in conjunction with our state and industry focused board members can really make a big difference for small businesses.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF JOINING AusBG? DO YOU HAVE TO BE AN AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL TO JOIN?

We have a great community who are really engaged. You can turn up to any of our events and be sure you’re going to be welcomed and meet new people, whatever your priorities are. You don’t need to be Australian to join, just have an interest in being involved with the Australian community. For some people they’re expats from other countries but have lived in Australia so want to retain the connection, others just like the way Australian work, and then of course we do have the full-fledged Australian companies registered in both countries. Then there’s the tangible benefits like discounts and member rewards which actually counter the cost of membership in a matter of weeks. Learn more about the Australian Business Group at Ausbg.net

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE AusBG IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?

Learn how to live in Abu Dhabi online at yallauae.ae

Australian business group aims to connect Australians to business and business to Australians in the UAE. We do that through informing people through newsletters, holding events that are either networking, diplomatic and knowledge, and introductions to people within the community. We also collaborate with other business groups for events, so it means that people have the opportunity to connect both within the Australian community and further afield when it’s relevant to them.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PLANS FOR YOUR NEW ROLE AS CHAIRPERSON AT AusBG?

One of the initiatives I’ve started is asking board members to nominate for a state or territory, industry or strategic priority (for example, defence, finance, government relations, or Expo 2020) so that they become the link between the trade commissioners and the members. In this way, members have a direct contact to talk to about specific regions or priorities. We’ve just set up the foundations of this, so we’ll run some networking sessions on this in the next few months. Otherwise, we have a clear focus on delivering value for our members, our membership and event attendance is increasing so I think we’re on the right track!
