Understanding the UAE is impossible without understanding the life of Sheikh Zayed and his deep religious faith, vision, determination and hard work. Emiratis are very proud of their present as well as their past, and their Founding Father Sheikh Zayed was quoted saying: “He who does not know his past cannot make the best of his present and future, for it is from the past that we learn.”

Fun Facts In the summer, the temperature can reach 500C and with the high humidity it can feel even hotter. The UAE is trying to change its climate by using cloud seeding, where planes fly up into the clouds and release salts to try to make rain. The UAE has the world’s sixth largest proven oil reserves and the fifth largest natural gas reserves. Scenes for Star Wars The Force Awakens were shot in the Rub ’al Khali desert in Abu Dhabi, also known as the Empty Quarter.

efore you begin exploring the sights of Abu Dhabi and the surrounding emirates, we thought we would provide a quick overview of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Located along the Arabian Gulf, the UAE has it all. From year-round sunshine, sandy beaches, great shopping, rich heritage, theme parks, major events and dining to suit every taste, there really is something for everyone here. The ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan took office in 2004, following the death of his father, the UAE's founder, Sheikh Zayed. Sheikh Zayed was the founder of the federation of the seven emirates that became the UAE in 1971: Abu Dhabi, as the capital, along with Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE has one of the world's largest oil reserves, and at one point the region's wealth depended mainly on this industry before the construction, manufacturing and tourism sectors began to flourish. Today, the UAE thrives in many industries which are boosting both visitor and resident numbers year-on-year. Based on the latest UN estimates in October 2017, the population of the UAE is just over 9.4 million, making it one of the largest countries in the Middle East. During your visit, it won't take you long to experience the warmth and welcoming nature of the Emirati people, and the friendly outlook of the expats who have settled here. Emiratis adore family life, so the lifestyle here is very much focused on maintaining a family oriented society. Although this guide is principally about Abu Dhabi, as you work your way through it, you’ll discover more about the other emirates and, hopefully, this will help you decide which attractions and sights you will want to see.

he city of Abu Dhabi is probably unlike anywhere you have ever visited. Young, at just 47-years-old, but steeped in history, the city offers so much to see, do and experience. Downtown, the vibrant city centre boasts an impressive skyline of soaring towers, an 8km stretch of coastline known as the Corniche, where traditional dhow boats can be found huddled within the old mina port and luxury yachts are seen glistening on the water. The luxurious 5-star Emirates Palace Hotel and the strikingly beautiful Presidential Palace - which is used for ceremonial events both sit in prime positions at the end of the Corniche. Across the city, if you're looking for a relaxing break, you'll find many pristine public beaches, beautiful beach clubs and swimming pools within hotels. If you're seeking some adventure during your stay, most beaches offer an extensive range of water-sports and energetic activities. Prefer exploring? Abu Dhabi offers a range of culture and heritage sites, attractions, shopping malls, restaurants, live entertainment as well as options for sightseeing by road, sea or sky. Take a look at our Abu Dhabi Map so you can begin navigating your way around the city. As the capital of the UAE, the emirate of Abu Dhabi is also home to neighbouring Al Ain city (with six UNESCO World Heritage Sites) and Al Dhafra, which makes up around two thirds of Abu Dhabi, with its vast desert area including the Liwa oasis and hundreds of kilometres of coastline. Turn to our Culture & Heritage pages to learn more about the best attractions to visit. Today, the capital is home to around 1.1 million people, with residents comprising over 200 different nationalities. Due to the discovery of oil, Abu Dhabi has changed rapidly over the last century. It has developed into a diverse, fascinating and lively city and region. So, what are you waiting for? Yalla, as they say in Arabic, which means ‘Let’s go!’
Inside this guide, you'll find everything you need to know for your stay – what to see, where to eat, how to get around and who you should call in an emergency. Also don't forget to download our free Yalla See It All™ app as there are amazing offers to help save you money and it is handy to have on your phone when you are out exploring the emirate. It's divided into sections so you will be able to find your way around easily. Enjoy!

We’ve put together three different itineraries for you to make the most out of your time in Abu Dhabi, whether you are here with kids, want to delve into the emirate’s culture and heritage, or just need a bit of me-time. You can find out more below, or take these itineraries with you on the go with our useful Yalla See It All app.
With the kids Abu Dhabi is a family-friendly city. Not only has the emirate recently been voted as one of the safest cities in the world, but also the exciting theme parks and range of entertainment options make for an actionpacked trip for children and adults alike.
best way to see Abu Dhabi is definitely from the water, and with a Jalboot cruise (see Sightseeing Tours on page 44) you will be able to explore the city’s major attractions and enjoy a number of stop-offs en route. For something a bit more adrenaline-filled, you could head out to the desert and enjoy a 4x4 desert dune bashing trip with one of the many guided tours. See Nirvana Travel & Tourism on page 44.

Day 1 – Start the morning on Yas Island and head to Ferrari World to enjoy the fastest rollercoaster on the planet. After a few hours at Ferrari World, head just across the road to Yas Waterworld and cool down with a fun range of slides, rides, and attractions. If you still have a need for speed after all of that, hop onto the Yas Express, a free Yas Island shuttle bus service, and try karting at the KartZone at Yas Marina Circuit. Day 2 - Abu Dhabi Mall has some fantastic family-friendly dining options. Start your day with a leisurely breakfast at one of the mall's restaurant outlets, then set sail on a Jalboot cruise. The

Alternatively, if you are interested in a day of culture visit the new Louvre Abu Dhabi which includes a children's museum, conceived for children aged between 6 and 12 years. In the afternoon, visit the magical Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (see Heritage Sights & Museums on page 22). Day 4 – Time to relax! Why not unwind with a day at Yas Links Golf Club? Even though the golf course has just been voted as the best golf course in the Middle East, the club is also the perfect place for families. In the afternoon, enjoy a day of beach fun and relaxation just down the road at Yas Beach. Alternatively, Saadiyat Beach offers a stunning beach and is only a 15-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi.
Day 5 - In the morning, paddle a kayak on a guided tour with Noukhada, starting from near the Eastern Mangroves Marina and explore the beautiful mangroves (see Sightseeing Tours on page 44). In the afternoon, head to downtown Abu Dhabi to Qasr Al-Hosn fort, Abu Dhabi’s symbolic birthplace, or Heritage Village. For those on an extended stay: Day 6 & 7 – If you have time, you will definitely want to make a trip to Al Ain, which is about an hour's drive to the east of Abu Dhabi. Children will love the old forts, Al Ain Zoo, and Wadi Adventure, a man-made park with white-water rafting and kayaking. There is much to see and do in Al Ain - see the Cultural Fans itineraries on the opposite page, and Al Ain on page 28 for more information.

Cultural fans Abu Dhabi is steeped in rich heritage and boasts many impressive culture landmarks and museums, which all tell a story of the emirate’s history. Here’s a 3-day itinerary (or 4-day if you choose to stay overnight in Al Ain).
off with a refreshment at the Observation Deck at 300, at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers and enjoy stunning views of Abu Dhabi from the 74th floor (see Unique Experiences on page 10).
Day 1 - Start the day with a trip to Heritage Village located at the Marina Breakwater (See Heritage Sites & Museums on page 23). Here you can step back in time and experience the traditional Emirati way of life. For lunch, take a 20-minute taxi ride over the Maqta Bridge to the Souk at Al Qaryat Al Beri, where you'll find various cafés and restaurants. (While on the Maqta Bridge look left and see the 200-year-old Al Maqta Watchtower in the creek.) In the afternoon, visit the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a beautiful image of Islam (see Heritage Sights & Museums on page 22). Also, just across the road from the mosque is Wahat Al Karama, a dramatic memorial to the UAE's fallen soldiers. Finish the day
Day 2 - Head out east to Al Ain. There is lots to do and see in Al Ain (see Al Ain on page 28) so set off early, or maybe stay over for a night to ensure you have time to take in the many cultural sights which include forts, museums and gardens. If you do, we recommend the 5-star Al Ain Rotana hotel. Day 3 (or Day 4 if you stay in Al Ain overnight) - visit the magnificent new Louvre Abu Dhabi museum (see Heritage Sights & Museums on page 23). Take a Jalboot boat from the back of Abu Dhabi Mall and enjoy the sights of Abu Dhabi from the sea (see Sightseeing Tours on page 44) as you make your way there. With a Jalboot Tour, you can hop on and off at various stages and see famous landmarks, including the Emirates Palace and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is located on Saadiyat Island, a 15-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi.
If R&R is what you’re after then you’ll be spoilt for choice in Abu Dhabi. Most hotels in and around the city offer day passes to their pools and beach clubs, but there are many other great beaches and places to visit. Day 1 - Head to the pristine Saadiyat Beach on Saadiyat Island, a beautiful 400m long public beach. A short stroll down the beach are two 5-star hotels with a multitude of food and beverage offerings, so you can enjoy lunch or

a refreshing beverage at sunset. Abu Dhabi also boasts many popular beach clubs, including Saadiyat Beach Club and Yas Beach, which have stunning ocean blue pools complemented by comfortable cabanas - perfect to relax! Here you can hire lounges, order lunch, or try out a fun water-based activity. Alternatively, try Yas Beach, a more lively beach with a resident DJ playing tracks in the late afternoon.
Day 3 – In the morning, take a leisurely Jalboot cruise to see the sights of Abu Dhabi from the sea (see Sightseeing Tours on page 44). On Fridays, try a sumptuous brunch (see Brunch! on page 56). Many of the hotels will also offer complimentary use of their pool and/or beach clubs for the day.
Day 2 - Start the day with a massage or a visit to a hammam in one of the city’s hotels. There really is so much choice in Abu Dhabi (see Relaxation & Wellbeing on page 46 for some ideas), or try the Talise Spa at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, just off the Corniche. Visit the stunning Emirates Palace Hotel and order a cappuccino sprinkled with 24-carat gold flakes! (see Drink coffee, eat cake on page 52, and Unique Experiences on page 10). At sunset, have a stroll along the Corniche and see the traditional dhows sail out to sea.

Discover the beauty of the world’s tallest sand dune, Tel Moreeb. The rich-coloured sand dune soars to over 300 metres and boasts a 50-metre incline. T
o say Abu Dhabi is modern is an understatement. The UAE is younger than many of the people who live here. But that’s not to say it has no past. People first settled here 7,000 years ago. Yet, until the late 1950s, when oil was discovered, Abu Dhabi was a small coastal town with a few hundred huts, a couple of buildings and a fort. Over 250 years ago, a party of hunters followed a gazelle at low tide on to the island. The legend goes that they found a small spring and reported back to the ruler of the day. He gave orders that a village should be established close to the spring and that today's 'City of Abu Dhabi' was formed. Abu Dhabi means 'Father of the Gazelle'. Today, huge skyscrapers and residential towers rise from where only sand existed just a few decades ago. The Emirate is very proud of its past, and there are many attractions around the capital where you can step back in time and experience what it was like to live here. When you begin exploring around the cultural and heritage attractions, you will quickly discover Abu Dhabi is very much a destination where respect for the past informs the present, and shapes the future. Across the vibrant emirate, you can see more than 700 kilometres of beautiful coastline, stunning natural islands, picture-perfect deserts, lush oases, soaring mountains and lively towns with plenty to offer. As you begin exploring the cultural and heritage sites listed within the next few pages, we hope you have an enjoyable visit. These popular attractions will give you a true insight into the wonderful traditions of the Arabian culture.

Fun Facts
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIAN JOHN
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is incredibly beautiful and awe-inspiring - with its 82 white gleaming domes, golden colonnades and giant marble flower inlays, which stretch across the huge central courtyard. Seen as the key site for worship in the United Arab Emirates, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also the largest mosque in the country. It spans across an area of 555,000 square metres and its four impressive main minarets soar 106 metres into the sky. As you stand back and admire the beauty of this place of worship, you can appreciate the incredible architecture inspired by the founder, and first President of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His vision was to build a mosque that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world incorporating the old and modern world of architecture and art. Built over a 11- year period and boasting Arabic calligraphy in its design, the Mosque, which opened in 2007, attracts over 4.5 million worshippers and visitors each year. Today, it remains the most visited attraction in Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a prominent structure across the capital's skyline, and is open for free daily tours for visitors. For more information turn to our Culture & Heritage section.
Why are you, you? From this question, a new beginning. From this question, a new destiny. For you are a world, and a meeting of worlds. Our dream is to unite that which has been separated by history. To return the many to the one. A great story unites us all, beyond colour and creed and gender. The lightning flash of art And the music of the heart. We reflect all cultures, all ways. We are a twenty first century wonder. Universal ideals, visions of art and truth. Now is the turning point of cultures and hopes. Come with questions, leave with visions. We are the link between the past and the future. Here, through art, new possibilities are born. And new answers are given wings. Why are you, you? Because we are mirrors of each other. Because together we create new worlds. Together we are more powerful than we know. We connect, we inspire, we multiply illuminations with the unique light of art.

Gazing up at the rain of light under the dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, is a “must” experience when in Abu Dhabi. The complex silvery structure of 7,850 overlapping stars filters the light of the gulf, reminiscent of the leaves of a palm tree, just on a gigantic scale. Underneath you can wander through the buildings of the museum city that appears to be floating in the sea. The various galleries will house the Arab world's first universal museum, focusing on shared themes and common connections throughout humanity, rather than dividing up art history into regions.

Palace, fortress and seat of government until 1966, Qasr Al Hosn is the historic nucleus of Abu Dhabi. It was the city’s first permanent building when it started out as a watchtower more than 250 years ago. Al Ain The garden city of Al Ain is set between the desert and the mountains that provide the springs for its extensive oasis. As the old centre of government, many of the emirate's traditional forts are found in Al Ain. Until cars and motorways made it an easy 1,5 hours trip between Abu Dhabi island and the oasis, it took caravans and people walking over the dunes 5 days to cover the distance. Keep that in mind as your drive away to a somewhat gentler pace of life among Al Ain’s UNESCO listed World Heritage Sites.
Al Jahili Fort
Set in lush landscaped gardens, the picturesque Al Jahili Fort and the stepped layers of the main tower, are one of Al Ain’s most iconic structures. The fort was built in 1891 to protect palm plantations, ensuring inter-tribal peace and protecting the mountain passes. Inside the fort, the small photo exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger is in itself worth stopping for. The British explorer crossed the Empty Quarter in the
mid-forties on camel back and documented what he saw with his camera, making this exhibition a voyage through time back to the Bedouin life in the UAE region. Make sure you see the documentary movie on site and view the small exhibition on Sheikh Zayed The First. Details: Sultan Bin Zayed Al Awwal Street, Al Ain. Entry: Free. Al Ain Oasis

Walking through an oasis comprised of 147,000 date palms and fruit bearing trees like mangos, oranges, bananas and figs is an immersive experience for all the family. The city of Al Ain owes its name to this huge 1200 hectare oasis, which has supposedly been cultivated for several thousand years. The oasis has plenty of working examples of the falaj, an indigenous system of complex water channels that tap into underground wells. You can also explore narrated trails that criss-cross the interior paths of the oasis, either by foot or even better using the bike rentals available. There is also a small eco centre and information pavilion at the West Gate and bike pickup/drop of places are at either side of the oasis, that work via a self-service system (for which you need a credit card). Jebel Hafeet or “Mountain Hafeet” is a little wonder in itself. An ancient seabed, jutting out from the sands up to an altitude of about 1,250 metres above sea level, the spectacular views that it offers attract thousands of tourists annually. There's a decent paved road which winds 12-miles up the mountain, with several parking lots along the way offering ample viewing opportunities and beautiful backdrops for photos. You will also find a café and a hotel near the top for refreshments.

Al Ain National Museum
Details: Located south of the Al Ain border shared with Oman, past the Green Mubazzarah park. Accessible all year.
The Al Ain National Museum is the oldest museum in the UAE. Its collection of archaeological artifacts from digs around Al Ain and other areas in UAE outlines the history of settlement in this region, from the much milder climates in the Stone Age to recent times. The museum also has a collection of gifts presented by various dignitaries to UAE rulers.
Camel Souk
The camel souk is a unique place. You might never see so many camels of different colour, size or breed together in one place. Maybe a racing camel for thirty thousand dollars is on your shopping list? This is not a tourist event, but a proper trading market with the smells and mingle associated. The herders might try to sell you tours around the animals, but feel free to walk around on your own. On a Friday, you can enjoy a slighter calmer feel.
The meandering complex of courtyards was renovated to reflect traditional designs and opened as a museum to the public in 2001. You can see how the family lived, and how local and international dignitaries were received, including the tent that Sheikh Zayed used to host guests during the winter in true Bedouin style.
Al Ain Palace Museum Al Ain Palace Museum, the former home of the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was once a political and social hub.

Hili Archaeological Garden
To see an example of one of the ancient bronze age tombs scattered across the emirate, stop in this public garden where archaeological remains are set between lawns and playgrounds. At the heart of the park is the circular Hili Grand Tomb from the Umm an-Nar period (about 2500 BCE to 2000 BCE), evidence of just how long humans have been settled in this area. The actual artefacts found here are on display in the Al Ain National museum. Consider combining it with a picnic or evening stroll. Details: 10 kilometres outside Al Ain on the road to Dubai. Mohammed Bin Khalifa Street, Al Ain. Open, Saturday - Sunday, 4pm - 11pm.

Here’s a few ways to enjoy the desert!
Y
1 ears ago, the UAE was simply a vast area of desert - very different from how it appears today with its towering cities and modern infrastructure.
Stretching outwards from the Arabian Gulf coast, most of the UAE comprises as a sand desert, with several areas remaining unbroken and uninhabited. It is understood the Bedouin, (who are nomadic Arabic people), were the first to live in the desert regions. The date palm, which has been an integral part of UAE history, provided a staple food for the Bedouin people. Within the desert, living conditions tend to be hostile for plant and animal life. Around 70 years ago, there were wild ostriches in Arabia and across the deserts it is still possible to find scatterings of ostrich eggshells. Some 600 years ago, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi was rather like the savannah of East Africa and there are fossil remains of many animals including elephants with four tusks and hippos. The rolling dunes of Abu Dhabi stretch across an area and reach the Empty Quarter with beautiful locations such as Liwa.
It is understood the oasis is the birthplace of the ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Traditionally, the men from the Liwa area made a living by working as pearl divers. Seeing the beauty of the Liwa oasis should most definitely be on your list of places to visit. Nowadays, the desert remains one of the largest continuous areas of sand in the world and one of the most popular attractions to see.

To the south of Abu Dhabi is Rub 'al Khali (the Empty Quarter), the largest continuous sand desert in the world. On the northern edge of the Empty Quarter is the Liwa Oasis which stretches about 100km east-west, along an arch curved to the north and consists of some 50 villages.
For a truly memorable trip to Abu Dhabi, booking a desert tour with Nirvana Travel & Tourism is highly recommended, and will allow you to experience the striking dips and peaks of the rich coloured sands up close. You can even ride the desert sands for some dune bashing on certain tours. Turn to page 44 for more details.

Meet some of the UAE’s Animals During your visit, you will be able to see many of the animals that live within the desert, under the water or on UAE shores. From the Arabian Camels and the adored Falcons to the protected Hawksbill Turtles, they are all here.
One of the most common animals you will spot when you’re on a safari here is the Arabian camel. They have a single hump, light coloured skin, a long neck and can grown to 2 metres in height. As they roam across the desert, they feed on plant, shrubs and grass, and can even drink up to 40 gallons of water at one time. Inside their hump, they are able to store fat allowing them to roam for weeks without eating any food. If you visit the Emirates Palace Hotel, you can enjoy a camel ride along the beach – definitely something to add to your to-do-list!
Falcon
Across the UAE, Falcons are officially the national symbol of the country. With their hooked upper beaks, large wings, strong grasping feet and superb vision, Falcons are one of the most common birds of prey in the world. Years ago the sport of Falconry was a way of life here in the Middle East, however, today Falconry still exists, but the power, ability and beauty of these
Arabian Horse
Just like the Falcon and Camel, the beauty, loyalty and strength of the Arabian horse is adored within the Arab culture. These beautiful animals have been a huge part of the UAE’s heritage dating back to the 1900s. Across the country, there are many equestrian clubs and places where these horses are cared for, trained and raced. An Arabian horse boasts a chiseled head, long neck, tall carriage and silky smooth mane.
Dugongs
Arabian Oryx
If you come across an Arabian Oryx during your trip, you can’t miss their long spiky horns, black features across their face, long neck and light coloured skin. If you’re out on a desert safari, keep an eye out for these creatures roaming across the desert sands. birds is treasured and protected. Abu Dhabi has its own Falcon Hospital near the airport where visitors can see these stunning birds up close.
Hawksbill Turtle
With their tapered head and district bird-like beak, the Hawksbill is one of seven species of sea turtle and is commonly found around the mangroves and coral reefs of Abu Dhabi. Over the last decade the
Under the warm blue waters of Abu Dhabi you will find Dugongs. With their light grey skin, flat tail, wide flippers - similar to a whale – and large head, these mammals live in the sea and feed off the grass and other plants found along the sea bed. A fullygrown Dugong can grow to 3 metres long and can weigh around 400kg. Dugongs are often referred to as sea cows and known to be shy-natured. Today, these mammals are endangered due to the decreasing amount of sea grass in our waters.
Flamingos
Abu Dhabi is the only place in Arabia where the flamingo bird breeds. The whole of the UAE is a migration hotspot for birds as they fly on a major route from Asia to Africa that sees millions of birds passing through every year.
And if you have time... Visit the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, which covers an area of five square kilometres and comprises both natural and man-made wetlands. The site was established in 1988 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Check the website www.ead.ae for the opening times.
Saluki
A Saluki is a rare breed of dog sometimes referred to as a desert dog – and is mainly found in this part of the world. Dating back thousands of years, hunting Saluki dogs was an ancient traditional sport, and one that was extremely popular among Emiratis. Today, these dogs, which look similar to a greyhound, are protected with many initiatives launched here in Abu Dhabi to help protect, train and care for them. The capital boasts its very own Arabian Saluki Centre, so you can see these adored dogs up close and learn about their fascinating history.

Ras Al Khaimah
At one time, the emirate was one of the wealthiest towns in the region with settlements dating back more than 5,000 years. Sharjah was named the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998 and the Islamic Culture Capital by the Organisation of Islamic Countries Conference in 2014. The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation, the Sharjah Heritage Museum, Sharjah Fort and the Heart of Sharjah are all interesting sites to visit, to name just a few and a trip to the Central Souk is a must. and the Dhayah Fort. Hundreds of pre-Islamic tombs can be found in the village of Shimal in the north of RAK, which is also the home to the Husn al-Shimal Fort. The RAK Pearl Museum provides a fascinating insight into the days of pearl diving. With so much to see and do, and only a 2.5 hours drive from Abu Dhabi, it’s no surprise RAK is a popular destination. Its many hotels offer short break packages and you can have fun at Ice Land Water Park, if you're looking for ways to cool off after all of your exploring.
On the edge of the Arabian Gulf, made up of many islands and with rich coastal mangroves, Umm Al Quwain is a great place to visit for those keen to experience the "old" UAE. GBP200/USD260), and there are also AED1 coins, with smaller coins of 25 and 50 fils (there are 100 fils to AED1). ATMs typically issue larger bank notes, but most hotels or money exchange outlets in the malls will offer an exchange service. Keep smaller notes ready for any taxi journeys as changing a larger note could be tricky. Bank cards are accepted in most places.

Public displays of affection amongst adults are not considered appropriate, so you should avoid hugging and kissing in public. Warm and sunny! One of the best things about the UAE is its guaranteed year-round sunshine. The ideal time to visit the UAE for visitors wishing to make the most of the outdoor activities is from October to April, when daytime temperatures average around 27-30 degrees celsius. However, with refreshing water parks across the emirate, and plenty of temperature-controlled indoor attractions and world-class shopping malls to keep visitors entertained, the emirate is a popular destination all year round.
The UAE is an Islamic country and follows the customs, rules, and traditions of the Islamic faith. The daily call to prayer, which takes places five times, can be heard throughout the day. If you have time, a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is highly recommended. The Holy Month of Ramadan is likely to start around May 15th 2018, and is the month of compassion and giving, in which Muslims will fast during daylight hours. If you are not observing the fast, some restaurants will still be open for those wishing to eat discreetly.
Visitors and residents are advised to dress sensibly in public places. Swimsuits and more modest bikinis are acceptable when by the beach or pool. When outside of the hotel, it is suggested that women wear looser, non-transparent clothing, and should cover their shoulders, cleavage and knees. There is no need to cover your head unless you are visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, in which case ladies and older girls should fully cover their body as far as the wrists and ankles. Men should wear long shorts or trousers in public places.
