INTRODUCTION TO THE UAE To understand Abu Dhabi, you must first understand the UAE 05

THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The United Arab Emirates

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BIGSTOCK

Understanding the UAE is impossible without understanding the life of Sheikh Zayed and his deep religious faith, vision, determination and hard work. Emiratis are very proud of their present as well as their past, and their Founding Father Sheikh Zayed was quoted saying: “He who does not know his past cannot make the best of his present and future, for it is from the past that we learn.”

B

efore you begin exploring the sights of Abu Dhabi and the surrounding emirates, we thought we would provide a quick overview of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Located along the Arabian Gulf, the UAE has it all. From year-round sunshine, sandy beaches, great shopping, rich heritage, theme parks, major events and dining to suit every taste, there really is something for everyone here. The ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan took office in 2004, following the death of his father, the UAE’s founder, Sheikh Zayed who was the founder of the federation of the seven emirates that became the UAE in 1971. Abu Dhabi was named capital of the other six emirates: Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE has one of the world’s largest oil reserves, and at one point the region’s wealth depended mainly on this industry before the construction, manufacturing and tourism sectors began to flourish. Today, the UAE thrives in many industries which are boosting both visitor and resident numbers year-on-year. Based on the latest UN estimates in October 2017, the population of the UAE is just over 9.4 million, making it one of the largest countries in the Middle East. During your visit, it won’t take you long to experience the warmth and welcoming nature of the Emirati people, and the friendly outlook of the expats who have settled here. Emiratis adore family life, so the lifestyle here is very

much focused on maintaining a familyorientated society. This guide is about Abu Dhabi, because Yalla believes that no trip to the UAE is complete without a visit to the capital. As you read through the guide, you’ll discover more about Abu Dhabi, and, hopefully, this will help you decide which attractions and sights you will want to see.

Fun Facts In the summer, the temperature can reach 500C and with the high humidity it can feel even hotter. The UAE is trying to change its climate by using cloud seeding, where planes fly up into the clouds and release salts to try to make rain. The UAE has the world’s sixth largest proven oil reserves and the fifth largest natural gas reserves. Scenes for Star Wars The Force Awakens were shot in the Rub ’al Khali desert in Abu Dhabi, also known as the Empty Quarter.

Sheikh Zayed - not just a legend, but a man of great humanity too Written by Peter Hellyer

T

The physical infrastructure of the country today, its roads and airports, its modern cities, its healthcare and educational services are the visible evidence of his achievements as the UAE’s leader. The spirit of cultural and religious tolerance, the harmony that underpins Emirati society and the empowerment of women offer testimony to the nature of the country he and his fellow-founders worked so hard to create. Together, these and other things comprise his legacy and the ‘Year of Zayed’ has been conceived as a way of ensuring both that those who recall his years of leadership

remember him, and that those who came after him or who are visitors to today’s UAE, gain some understanding of his leadership. Looking around the UAE today, it’s easy to see his achievements, to feel something of the way in which his philosophy and beliefs remain vibrant parts of local society, and to understand why he remains deeply-loved and deeply-missed. It is more difficult, though, as the years pass and as Sheikh Zayed becomes an historical figure, almost the substance of legend, to get a feel for what he was like as a man, and of his benevolence and of his great humanity. That, after all, was often best displayed in his personal interactions rather than on formal occasions. Anecdotes of these, often spread by word-ofmouth rather than being formally recorded, do go some way to explaining a little more about this remarkable leader. One little-known story from his early days of leadership provides evidence both of his caring behaviour and his humility. As Sheikh Zayed arrived one day to open a new clinic in a desert township, a local lady sought to attract his attention by grabbing his arm, desperate to bring a problem to his attention. At the time, the skin on his arm was very tender, and the rough gesture caused his arm to bleed. His guards moved to take her away, but he stopped them. “The wound on my arm will heal,” he told them, “but the wound in her heart will not be healed.” Patiently, gently, he allowed the lady to spill out her sorrows.

Did You Know? At the Louvre Abu Dhabi, there is an artwork which bears the fingerprint of Sheikh Zayed at its centre. Surrounding the thumbprint is a series of concentric circles drawn by hand and with a millimetre’s accuracy, which radiate outwards like ripples on the water.

Thousands in the Emirates, both citizens and expatriates will have other stories of his humility and compassion to tell, and many tens of thousands will have heard them. Among them are those, for example, who witnessed the way in which Sheikh Zayed would join enthusiastically

his year, 2018, has been declared by the Government of the United Arab Emirates as the ‘Year of Zayed’, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the country’s founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1966. He presided over the creation of the UAE in 1971 and served as its first President until his death in November 2004.

in the dancing at weddings, or who had the good fortune to see him visiting a local vegetable market, moving among the customers and stall-holders, trying the fruit, asking about how business was going. There are, too, many with their own personal memories about how he would travel regularly around the country, setting up camp in rural areas so that anyone, regardless of status, could come to talk to him and to ask for his help in solving their problems.

As it was in hunting, so it was in the rest of his life. As leader, Ruler and President, Sheikh Zayed was as one with his people, sharing their concerns, their worries and their desires, Never remote, never placing himself, or allowing others to place him, on an elevated pedestal, he expressed his care and love for them. During his lifetime, they returned that in abundance, and the country continues to do so today.

It was through this kind of interaction that Sheikh Zayed was able to keep his finger on the pulse of society and through this, too, that he expressed his love for his people, a love that they returned. In 1976, writing about his affection for the traditional local pastime of falconry, he explained that one of its greatest attractions for him was the way in which it allowed people of varying status to come together. “The group may include a king, a governor, a prince, a prominent merchant or, again, just an ordinary man who has a house and a family to support, but a love of sport, friendship and a desire for the chase brings them all together.” “This companionship,” Sheikh Zayed noted, “permits each and every member in the expedition to speak freely and express his views and viewpoints without inhibition or restraint, and allows the one responsible to acquaint himself with the wishes of his people, to know their problems and perceive their views accurately, and thus to be in a position to help and improve their situation.”

“The ruler, any ruler, is only there to serve his people and secure for them prosperity and progress. To achieve this, he should live among his people to feel their wishes and know their problems, and this cannot be achieved if he isolates himself from them.” Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

YEAR OF ZAYED

A Pause for Reflection: The Founder’s Memorial The opening of the Founder’s Memorial — a permanent tribute to the centenary of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan — coincides with 2018 being named the Year of Zayed, and the cultural landmark must be added to one’s Abu Dhabi itinerary. Illuminated by more than 2,000 lights, the suspended shapes of The Constellation shine like stars at night. The celestial display evokes the timelessness of Sheikh Zayed’s vision, which continues to offer the UAE a guiding light along a path of progress and prosperity. The artwork weighs 250 tonnes and consists of 1,327 geometric shapes suspended from 1,110 cables. These constitute five different types of regular, convex polyhedrons known as ‘platonic solids’, shapes which are renowned for their mathematical beauty and symmetry. The artwork was conceptualised and designed by public artist Ralph Helmick, whose practice explores human perception through large-scale public installations that invite optical discovery. The artwork’s reflected points of light form a series of profiles of Sheikh Zayed that vary when viewed from different perspectives both within the memorial’s landscape and from outside along the Corniche. The memorial’s Welcome Centre provides an insightful multimedia experience enabling visitors to explore Emirati heritage by engaging with Sheikh Zayed’s legacy through rare footage, personal stories from people that knew him, and the voice of the late leader himself. Yalla highly recommends that visitors take a free guided tour led by UAE nationals to have a more enriching encounter with artwork.

T

he city of Abu Dhabi is unlike anywhere you have ever visited. At just 47-years-old, the city is young, yet steeped in a rich history with so much to see, do and experience. Downtown, the vibrant city centre boasts an impressive skyline of soaring towers, an 8km stretch of coastline known as the Corniche, where traditional dhow boats can be found huddled within the old Mina Port and luxury yachts are seen glistening on the water. The luxurious 5-star Emirates Palace and the strikingly beautiful Presidential Palace both sit in prime positions at the end of the Corniche.

Across the city, if you’re looking for a relaxing break, you’ll find countless pristine public beaches, exclusive beach clubs and swimming pools within hotels. If you seek adventure during your stay, most beaches offer an extensive range of water-sports, both relaxing and exhilarating. Prefer exploring? Abu Dhabi offers a range of culture and heritage sites, attractions, shopping malls, restaurants, live entertainment as well as options for sightseeing by road, sea or air.

Today, the capital is home to around 1.1 million people, with residents comprising over 200 different nationalities. Due to the discovery of oil, Abu Dhabi has changed rapidly over the last century. It has developed into a diverse, fascinating and lively city and region. So, what are you waiting for? Yalla, as they say in Arabic, meaning ‘Let’s go!’

Inside this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know for your stay – what to see, where to eat, how to get around and who you should call in an emergency. Its parks keep thrill seekers busy from the day into night, and its restaurants are a haven for gastronomes. Day 1 – Start your holiday at Warner Bros. WorldTM Abu Dhabi, which opens on 25 July. If you visit Emirates Palace, you can experience this sweet treat, which is seen as the epitome of indulgence at the Palace. The Palace Cappuccino is made with the finest ingredients, a superior blend of aromatic coffee, which is then sprinkled with gold leaf flakes to give you a taste of royalty. Served on a polished silver tray, you can enjoy your cappuccino with a date and the sweet of the day. That’s not all. You can also order the impressive Ice Gold, a delicious scoop of soft vanilla or chocolate ice cream - made with camel milk served in a cone with a 24-carat gold leaf crown drizzled over it. The best bit is, apparently, gold is believed to be good for you!

Sunset from the Top of the Town

Take your senses and your Instagram account to the next level when you book the oncemonthly St. Regis Abu Dhabi ‘Helipad Sunset Supper’ series. The dinner on the hotel’s exclusive helipad, beyond an unforgettable sunset and view, is serviced by an attentive staff of chefs, butlers, and waiters there to ply you with caviar, fresh oysters and many other moreish canapés as you gaze out onto what is arguably the most stunning view of Abu Dhabi from a platform elevated 225 meters above ground.

Souvenir Shop at the Souk Visit the Souk at World Trade Center to shop for trinkets, household goods or local art. The souk is host to a vast array of vendors. Be sure to bargain gently in some of the shops — their favourite past time. Don’t be ashamed to start the bidding low as it only makes the haggling more lively. You might find yourself parched after all that haggling. If so, drop by Tarbouche for one of the city’s best lemonmint drinks, which are refreshing and about as local as you can get in the capital.

Emirati Experiences

The very best way to learn about a new city is to mingle with the locals, and Abu Dhabi makes this pursuit quite easy. Book an Emirati Experience or hire a guide to get to know the capital.

Meet Maitha Essa Maitha is passionate about sharing the UAE’s story with visitors. In her Emirati Home Experience, Maitha welcomes guests into her very own kitchen to meet her extended family, dine and learn Emirati household traditions.

How did you get into this line of work?

I love my country and enjoy meeting new people. I devised this tour as a way to share my passion for the UAE, my family and our food with people from all over the world. Though each guest enters my home a stranger, they all leave as family, and my hope is that they leave with a better understanding of UAE culture and very full and happy after eating my mother’s delicious food.

What are your guests most surprised about in an Emirati home?

Most guests are surprised that we (Emirati Nationals) wear normal clothes around the house. They are also usually very interested in the UAE burqa — the piece of fabric women wear which covers the nose and upper lip. Westerners are usually more familiar with the “burqa” worn in Afghanistan, which covers a woman from head to toe, but ours, of course, serves a very different purpose. The burqa came into use in the pre-Islamic period, and it resembles the head of an eagle. It is worn by engaged or married women as a pledge.

What would you like most for your guests to take away from your tour?

While you can find first-class Arabian hospitality in all the city’s hotels, enjoying a meal in someone’s home is intimate, and my guests love the warmth of my family’s kitchen. Emiratis are gracious and hospitable, and, in my tour I break down stereotypes and share my passion for the UAE in a casual setting over home-cooked food and conversation. EMIRATI EXPERIENCES

Meet Saleh Al Ameri Meet Anne Marshall Anne is a Canadian Experience Creator in Abu Dhabi. Anne creates bespoke tours that offer an insider’s experience that can only be gleaned from a local guide.

How did you become an Experience Creator?

When we first arrived in the capital almost ten years ago, we stayed in the Oryx Hotel in Khalidiyah, which at the time was one of the taller hotels so I could see the city’s skyline change. My tours are the product of my passion for Abu Dhabi and desire to understand it.

What kind of tours do you give?

Saleh Al Ameri exudes enthusiasm for his native Abu Dhabi and its food. He leads tours to share his passion for traditional Emirati cuisine in a casual—and filling—food-lovers’ tour for those looking to experience the culture through its cuisine.

I work hand in hand with Abu Dhabi’s tourism board to create experiences for visitors. We tailor bespoke tours based upon their interests. I am most frequently asked to guide tours on the Grand Mosque, Falcon Hospital, Hidden Gems, and Food Traditions.

What prompted you to guide a Food Tour for visitors?

The first thing I want to try when I travel is the region’s/city’s food. I created this tour to help visitors get out of the hotels and onto the streets to eat like a local — just like I do when I go out with my friends. Visitors don’t always try Emirati food. I want them to, not just try our food, but to understand it and leave with some knowledge about it.

What role do you believe food plays in travel?

What happens on your tour?

I pick my guests up, and we talk about Abu Dhabi, cars, culture -- anything they are interested in. Then, depending on the time of day, I take them to Heritage Village first for a walking tour to work up a big appetite. Then, we go to my favourite breakfast spot. We drink coffee, learn about UAE coffee traditions and then we eat a lot. Whatever meal they choose, I take them to surprising places. We eat and laugh, and everyone leaves with a much better understanding of the UAE. To learn more about the Emirati Food Tour, contact Saleh directly by phone at +971 55 968 5639 or by email at s.j.s.alameeri@gmail.com.

Saleh says...

Come hungry and prepared to try new things. You will leave my tour knowing a lot about the city and bursting at the seams.

SEE IT ALL

What are your guests most surprised by when they take your tours?

They are always surprised by how clean and green Abu Dhabi is. One of my favourite places to take visitors is Saadiyat Island to see families of gazelles in their native habitat. It’s rare to have such up close encounters with wildlife in a city this large.

What advice do you have for visitors when they are planning their trip? Get a guide! Some of the very best parts of Abu Dhabi are not easily accessible to tourists. I tell guests in advance of their trip that they should prepare to be enlightened, because Abu Dhabi is not what they think. You can reach Anne at +971 50 720 4665 or by emailing seeabudhabi@gmail.com.

Anne says...

If you are in Abu Dhabi in the summer, visit the Date Market in Mina Port. Summer is the season for fresh dates. Drop by Green Lawn Dates to purchase both fresh and dried dates to take home as gifts. It’s hard to describe how wonderful fresh dates taste — they are crunchy like a pear, but have a fresh taste like sorbet.

When you know a country’s food, you know its culture. We all have to eat and many of us, like me, live to eat. I think there is no better way to explore a country and its people than by trying its food. I also think it’s very important to eat in the small, family-owned restaurants and to try foods that are steeped in UAE tradition.

For over 5,000 years, Henna has symbolised love, sensuality and good luck. Henna is simply a green plant and has medicinal qualities. Spices were used as a source of trading. During the Ancient Roman Empire trading largely came from Arabian traders supplying cassia, cinnamon and cardamom, to name a few. Ayala dancing is generally known as the 'stick dance', which is a traditional folk dance of the UAE accompanied by drummers and where dancers face one another.

o say Abu Dhabi is modern is an understatement. The UAE is younger than many of the people who live here, but that’s not to say it has no past. People first settled in the UAE approximately 7,000 years ago. Yet, until the late 1950s and before the discovery of oil, Abu Dhabi was a small coastal town with a few hundred huts, a couple of buildings and a fort. Over 250 years ago, a party of hunters followed a gazelle at low tide onto the island of Abu Dhabi. The legend goes that they found a small spring and reported back to the ruler of the day. He gave orders that a village should be established close to the spring; thus today’s ‘City of Abu Dhabi’ was formed. Abu Dhabi means ‘Father of the Gazelle’. Today, huge skyscrapers and residential towers rise from where only sand existed just a few decades ago. The Emirate is very proud of its past, and there are many attractions around the capital to help you step back in time and experience what it was like to live here. When you begin exploring the cultural and heritage attractions, you will quickly discover that Abu Dhabi is very much a destination where respect for the past informs the present and shapes the future. Across the vibrant emirate, you can explore more than 700 kilometres of beautiful coastline, stunning natural islands, picture-perfect deserts, lush oases, soaring mountains and lively towns with plenty to offer. As you begin exploring the cultural and heritage sites listed within the next few pages, we hope you have an enjoyable visit. These popular attractions will give you a true insight into the wonderful traditions of the Arabian culture.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is incredibly beautiful and awe-inspiring - with its 82 white gleaming domes, golden colonnades and giant marble flower inlays, which stretch across the huge central courtyard. Seen as the key site for worship in the United Arab Emirates, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also the largest mosque in the country. It spans across an area of 555,000 square metres and its four impressive main minarets soar 106 metres into the sky. A little-known feature of the Mosque is its unique lighting system, which is designed to reflect the phases of the moon. There are 22 light towers which project soft clouds of a ‘bluish grey’ colour onto the exterior of the mosque and change according to the moon phase every night.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIAN JOHN

As you stand back and admire the beauty of this place of worship, you can appreciate the incredible architecture inspired by the founder, and first President of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His vision was to build a mosque that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world incorporating the old and modern world of architecture and art. Built over a 11-year period and boasting Arabic calligraphy in its design, the Mosque, which opened in 2007, attracts over 4.5 million worshippers and visitors each year. Today, it remains the most visited attraction in Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a prominent landmark across the capital’s skyline and is open for free daily tours for visitors.

Heritage Village, Marina Breakwater

The Heritage Village is an old-time favourite for tourists and the best place in Abu Dhabi to get the feel for traditional desert life. Enter the typical Bedouin tents made from goats' hair and try to imagine what life in those would have been like. Wander through the tiny oasis complete with a few animals, or visit the workshop's courtyard situated across from the neat little museum. A series of craftsmen demonstrate their traditional skills, from metal and wood works to pottery and leather tanning – if you are lucky you might get the chance to try out the pottery wheel. A traditional restaurant onsite offers a refreshing mint/lemon juice while you look out at the skyline of the Corniche opposite the village. Breakwater, the Corniche. Telephone: +971 2 681 4455

Combine your visit to the Heritage Village with... For a great shot of Abu Dhabi’s skyscrapers across the sea, walk a bit further along the breakwater to the giant flag pole and the rotunda of the National Theatre, where locals hang out in the evenings and jet ski riders show off their skills. If you want to combine your trip to the past with modern luxuries, then head to Marina Mall, just across the road from the Heritage Village and Emirates Palace, just a short ride away.

Must See If you only have a day or two in Abu Dhabi, make sure to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Heritage Village for a balance between architecture, culture and local heritage.

Explore these hidden gems which are off the beaten track...

Palace, fortress and seat of government until 1966, Qasr Al Hosn is the historic nucleus of Abu Dhabi. It was the city’s first permanent building when it started out as a watchtower more than 250 years ago. Renovations of the delicate coral and sea stone structures are transforming the site into a major cultural centre. Until it reopens fully, the Visitor Centre houses a small, but worthwhile exhibition, that tells the story of how Abu Dhabi island was settled by a small fishing community and progressed to the high-rise city you see today. Check out the incredible photos series of the fort sitting in a tranquil desert setting 70 years ago to appreciate just how much the emirate has changed since the discovery of oil. Qasr Al Hosn, Sheikh Zayed the First Street. Website: www.qasralhosn.ae/en

Corniche and Mamsha Al Khair

Walking or cycling along the extensive Corniche promenade brings it home to you how much the story of Abu Dhabi is linked to the sea. Years ago pearl fishers used to push off boats on expeditions full of danger and risk. From the East Plaza all the way to the Emirates Palace, you will spot the granite monolith and limestone installations of Mamsha Al Khair, which contain quotes from globally renowned inspirational figures that aim to increase awareness of the importance of social responsibility and social service. Parking is available next to Nation Towers on Corniche Road. Use the pedestrian underpass to access the beach side.

CULTURE & HERITAGE The Women’s Handicraft Centre is not on the main tourist thoroughfare, but if you persevere to find your way past the gate of the complex you will be rewarded with a unique chance to meet the true guardians of local heritage. Slip off your shoes as you enter the five workshop areas, sit down and observe the women in traditional dress at work. You can stock up on the products for sale - souvenirs made here in the UAE - in the exhibition hall opposite the workshops. The hall also houses plenty of interesting displays of traditional Bedouin household craft and adornments and a big model of Abu Dhabi as it was in 1959. Women, men, children are all welcome. Dress appropriately for this traditional environment and respect the breaks at prayer time. This is a great opportunity to take snapshots of local craft in the making, but remember to ask for permission before photographing the women. Follow Karamah Street (14th ) to the end, heading away from the Corniche. Park outside the Women’s Union complex and walk up to the guard who will indicate the way to the tent shaped roofs in the far left corner. Taxi drivers may not know this place, so bring these directions when you go. Identity documents may be required and will be left at the security gate.

The Zayed Centre is set in a picturesque complex of buildings modeled on traditional Emirati architecture right at the edge of the turquoise sea. Its little museum is well worth a visit to get a sense of the pride Emiratis feel for the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, affectionately known as the ‘Father of the Nation’. The Zayed Exhibition holds photos and personal memorabilia of the beloved late leader and many unique gifts bestowed on him by foreign delegations. Next to cherished classic vehicles – including a Mercedes Maybach - you will find marvels such as stuffed lions, hunting rifles, and a huge portrait of the late Sheikh recorded as a Guiness World Book record, composed from UAE stamps worth more than AED 100.000. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital One of the most sought-after tours in the capital is a visit to Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. While it may sound a bit dry to those who think they are not that interested in birds, a visit to this hospital is a walk back into time and a window into culture like no other in the capital. Allow Yalla to take you on a quick tour of the hospital to pique your interest. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is the largest falcon hospital in the world. It opened on 3 October 1999, at the request of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan — the Founding Father of the UAE. A tour of the facility begins with a primer on the three main breeds of falcons, the important seasons of hunting, breeding, moulting, and what falcons physically do during these times, and, perhaps most importantly, you will learn why the falcon is revered as the national bird of the UAE.

Perhaps the most unique features of the tour is seeing one of the most common procedures: a falcon pedicure. The falcon is sedated, and the talons are trimmed. While the falcon is sedated, visitors have the opportunity to feel the falcon’s resting heartbeat. The technician will also describe and point out all the interesting aspects of the falcon’s anatomy, such as their multiple eyelids and teeth. The tour then continues to the aviary, where short-term residential falcons soar freely above you. The tour lasts approximately two hours, and visitors will depart understanding why the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is ranked as the second most popular destination in Abu Dhabi on TripAdvisor. This is not coincidentally one of the city’s most popular tours, so do check out the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital on your next visit to Abu Dhabi. Portrait of an Artist & Curator:

Alia Zaal Lootah There is a new generation of artists and curators defining the Abu Dhabi art scene. Yalla would like to introduce you to Alia Zaal Lootah, a UAE-based visual artist, Louvre Abu Dhabi curator and rising star to watch.

What is the role of the curator?

Of course, it depends on the type of curator and exhibition. With regard to contemporary art, my role is to serve artists and, ultimately, to serve art itself.

Does being an artist give you a unique perspective into your role as a curator at the Louvre Abu Dhabi? I speak the language of artists and understand their needs. The purpose of my role as a curator is to take their artwork and compose it in a space with a clear narrative that showcases its inherent beauty and reveals its meaning; an artist must trust that I can do this for the relationship to work. I employ artistic techniques in my curation. In some ways, I view an exhibition as a canvas, and I compose it as I would a painting.

Imagine the Abu Dhabi art scene in a decade.

Just look at the past decade to see what Abu Dhabi will become in another 10 years. The UAE has invested tremendously in its art scene in the past decade, and, if it carries on at this pace, I’m certain that in ten years’ time, we will have a clear infrastructure laid out to fully support the arts at all levels. I see expanded studio spaces and expect to see at least 10 local galleries that are also visible internationally. To nurture young artists, there will be more art programs in schools. I envision a dedicated arts university to help artists prepare for successful careers and as a place where artists of all varieties will collaborate. When you expand art schools and art programmes, you foster a generation of art appreciators who can activate an exciting art ecosystem. My father. He’s what you might call an ‘outsider artist’— one that creates art prolifically but not for commercial purposes. My father has weak eyesight, which is highly susceptible to light and shade conditions, so this is why he is exceptionally attentive to detail. In my home, making art was as normal as breathing and eating; it’s just what we do. Every day, he impels me to question what art is and who is an artist; fundamental points to ponder in both my roles as an artist and a curator. Visit Co-Lab in the Louvre Abu Dhabi to see Alia’s curations.

ABU DHABI ART

Art in Abu Dhabi Bubbling below the surface of Abu Dhabi’s gleaming skyscrapers is a grassroots art scene, known to few. Yalla picks the best spots to experience art in public places, in galleries, art exhibitions, in stores and even in coffee shops.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

A decade in the making, the Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in 2017 to critical acclaim. The building itself is a work of art. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel’s geometric domed roof is spectacular, and its design allows a ‘rain of light’ to shower through. The inside also doesn’t disappoint with its expansive exhibition space, 12 galleries and a detached stage located in the sea. Each room flows clearly to the next – evidence of the journey through time and the museum itself being meticulously planned. Its new Art Lounge offers a lovely space to socialise while enjoying the beautiful view of Abu Dhabi’s skyline or take in a sunset over drinks and dinner. Families must visit the dedicated children’s museum and try the hands-on family workshops. Saadiyat Cultural District. Website: www.louvreabudhabi.ae

Manarat Al Saadiyat

A stalwart on the Abu Dhabi art scene, Manarat Al Saadiyat was recently renovated adding new art and photography studios to provide drop-in spaces where the public can work on their own projects alongside a team of artists and photographers. Specialised workshops, performances, film screenings and music are all part of their ongoing programme. The new dedicated Drop-In Studio is a space for people of all ages to experiment with art. Basic supplies are provided, and Art Central has a store next door to purchase more advanced supplies. Saadiyat Cultural District. Website: www.manaratalsaadiyat.ae

Warehouse 421

Etihad Modern Art Gallery

Located in Al Bateen, art lovers have found in Etihad Modern Art Gallery an eclectic and modern independent gallery that is worth the journey. Exhibitions tend to focus on Middle Eastern talent, but international artists are also regularly displayed. After browsing the artwork, go for a bite to eat in the neighbouring and fittingly creative Art House Café run by the owners of the gallery. Quirky décor and striking artwork adorn the walls alongside colourful furnishings made out of repurposed items, such as oil barrel tables and stools, give the café an edgy feel. Exhibitions change monthly and are free to enter. Adjacent to Al Bateen Mall, just off Al Falah/9th Street. Website: www.etihadmodernart.com

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOMMASO CIANCIO, KRISTINA SIMIC

Housed in two repurposed warehouses in the bustling Mina Port, Warehouse 421 is a vibrant hub for creativity. Much of the work housed within focuses on the UAE or is made by Emirati artists and the artwork changes quarterly. Past exhibitions have included emerging Emirati talent, UAE

contributions to the Venice Biennial, and a poignant window into Emirati family photographs from the late 20th century. They offer free workshops, so children and adults may explore their creativity and learn UAE handicrafts. Mina Port. Website: www.warehouse421.ae

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

People come from all over the world to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. Many come for the bragging rights alone: to say they conquered both the fastest and tallest drop rollercoasters in the world, which are conveniently under one Ferrari red Yas Island roof. There is much more to Ferrari World than just the two coasters though, of course, they are noteworthy. You can easily spend a day in Ferrari World even if you have no desire to attain such bragging rights and be treated to a variety of dining and entertainment experiences. Italians, of course, are known for fast cars, coffee, cafés and entertainment, and you can find it all at Ferrari World. For more information visit www.ferrariworldabudhabi.com

Almost any day is a great day to make a splash at Yas Waterworld. Lather on the sunscreen then hit up the most happening waterpark in the UAE. With over 40 rides, slides and attractions, everyone from tiny tots to water-park veterans will find something they love here. Daredevils and those who require more thrills than just a waterslide will love the Liwa Loop and the Jebel Drop and enjoy panoramic views of the park as you free fall down these speed waterslides — think free fall luging through water. For the rest of us, there are numerous waterslides, a lazy river, wave pool and a dedicated kids’ area for the little ones. If you need a break, check out the park’s newest attraction: Cinesplash, a 5D immersive cinema experience which takes viewers on a wet ’n’ wild journey back in time to learn about the UAE.

Sightseeing Tours With world-class landmarks, impressive residential towers, thrilling attractions and stunning coastline, booking a sightseeing tour is highly recommended. We’ve outlined a few ways to explore the capital from road, sea or sky.

A touch of tradition... For something a little more special and close to the heart of UAE culture, why not book a fascinating Pearl Journey cruise? Step onboard one of the stunning wooden dhow boats, from the Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, and enjoy learning how pearling, back in the 1900s, was the UAE’s leading industry prior to the discovery of oil. Daily tours include a leisurely cruise along the mangroves, as well as fascinating oyster and pearling demonstrations. Or, why not relax onboard a traditional dhow vessel, which was used years ago by merchants and traders on the waters of the Gulf, and take in spectacular views of the sunsetting against the Abu Dhabi skyline. Abu Dhabi Dhow Cruises hosts day and evening cruise tours around the capital. Some also offer options to have dinner onboard, so you can dine as you enjoy the sights. Daily cruises begin and end from the Mina Port on the Corniche. If you fancy a romantic evening, requests for a couple cruise are also available. Alternatively, you might like to experience dining on a traditional Arabian dhow, so try Rikks Floating Dhow from Yas Marina.

Alternatively, visit any of the various restaurants in Souk Qaryat Al Beri for romantic canal views, Meat Co. is favoured for impeccably prepared steaks served with a sunset view.

It’s hard to find a child who doesn’t like Italian food. If pizza is required to soothe the savage beast, Yalla recommends you order in from the best wood-fired pizza restaurant: Pizza Di Rocco. Alternatively, choose Todd English’s Olives in Venetian Village for a chic sit-down spot that caters to kids, but has gourmet fare for the parents.

Find the Best Arabic Food When you need fast Arabic food on the run, Shish Shawarma is the place in Abu Dhabi to get it with a convenient downtown location and super-fast delivery services. If you prefer a more civilised spread with an unsurpassed sunset view, get your mezze and mixed grill on Sambusek’s terrace in the Rosewood Abu Dhabi.

Indian Spice Trail

From upmarket to down home, spice is around every corner in Abu Dhabi. Yalla recommends that you visit Avasa on Saadiyat Island for a memorable Indian meal. Explore the backstreets of Abu Dhabi along Salam street and enjoy a meal at Kwality Restaurant. This is Indian cuisine in a more upmarket setting than its neighbours.

Cool Treats for Hot Days

From 24K gold covered ice cream to authentic gelato, Abu Dhabi offers many ways to beat the heat. First stop is Le Café at Emirates Palace where you simply must Instagram their 24K gold-covered soft serve ice cream. For something even lighter but no less refreshing, go for the granita at Dolci & Capricci in the heart of Abu Dhabi.

Finding Today’s Catch

From Morton Bay Bugs to Nile Perch, few places offer more local discovery than Abu Dhabi’s legendary Mina Port Fish Market.

From the hustle and bustle of vendors to the variety of seafood on display, a visit to a local market is one of the best ways to immerse oneself in the pulse of a new city. The Mina Port Fish Market is one of the remaining historic areas of Abu Dhabi, and it’s one of the few places where the daily lives of workers, Emiratis and travellers converge. The Mina Port Fish Market has three main areas. There is an area for buying fish, for cleaning fish and for cooking fish. The fish market is a cacophony of sounds with sellers beckoning you to their artfully arranged mounds of seafood. Many tourists take a brief tour of the market, a couple of snapshots and move on, but this is such a lost opportunity. Instead, you must also take the time to eat.

Yalla suggests that you take a walk to the Corniche and eat on the beach or find a bench along the back of the building by the water where traditional dhow boats are on view. Open your divinely fresh fish, lather it with sauce, and you’ll be in on a real, and often missed, local treat!

Walk from the Corniche or take a short taxi ride there.

The grill stations get busy so plan for a short wait.

Local’s Tip:

Take Your Fish to Sayyad Marine After you buy your fish, bypass the restaurants and take your fresh fish to a hidden gem with a bit more ambiance: Al Sayyad. The restaurant is about five doors down from the Fish Market. It’s not fancy, but they will cook your seafood well. Located right next to the dhows that fish early every morning, you will be guaranteed the freshest catch at this spot. Al Sayyad Marine Restaurants and Grills +971 2 673 3711

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHUTTERSTOCK

Arrive early. Most shops shut after lunchtime.

With such a selection, it may be hard to decide what fish to buy. The large prawns and local white fish are an affordable entry point into eating at this market. Your seafood selection is weighed, bagged and paid for, and then visitors bring it to another area to be cleaned and grilled with spices. After about 30 minutes, it is wrapped in foil and ready to go accompanied by a tasty tahini-based dipping sauce.

An array of salts and mustards accompanies the steak, which add savoury nuances to the meat. The mac & cheese is also a must try’.

Where will you find the very best breakfast in the city? Breakfast food, in my opinion, is the best food, and I will happily eat it all day! My favourite place is Tasha’s in Al Bateen. Tasha’s has the perfect menu with both healthy and comfort food options with a great view. For a little indulgence, you won’t regret seeking out the Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s almond croissant--it’s DIVINE!’

Is there a hotel restaurant that doesn’t feel like a hotel restaurant? Al Mayass in the Sheraton, one of the city’s earliest iconic hotels, has an old school charm and a water view. It serves delicious Lebanese Armenian cuisine, including sour cherry lamb kabab bi karaz, an unexpected treat. Mezze, like hummus with pine nuts, garlicky batata harra, and grilled halloumi are also always delicious.

What is the best small restaurant to explore? I love exploring restaurants, and I’m always look for something new. I like Sushina in the World Trade Center for its interesting fusion of cuisines with Arabic influences on Japanese food. My favourite dish is the duck salad with dates. There is also ramen if you’d prefer a healthier option. The service is pleasant and quick, and the prices are reasonable.

When faced with as many amazing dining options as there are around Abu Dhabi, it can be tricky to make the important decision about where to eat. So, we’ve polled some local and international culinary luminaries to point you in the right direction.

If you are offered Arabic coffee (aka gahwa), do not pass it up! It’s a gesture of hospitality to offer it to guests, and it’s an unbeatable local experience. Gahwa is always served in a small, handle-less cup. The cup is filled half full to keep it hot. Shake the cup gently to show you’ve finished.

Where do you take your family for a meal on weekends? My most preferred weekend spot is the Friday Brunch at Beach Rotana for its variety of dishes. It’s attractive to families for its colourful and diverse dessert selection and kids’ area. I also love Bait Yadoo, which means grandma’s house in Arabic, where they serve authentic Emirati food.

Where do you take out of town visitors to eat in the capital? There are so many fabulous places, and most of them are not in the most obvious spots. One that always comes to mind is Café Arabia - from the beautiful lantern marking the entry, reflecting a kaleidoscope of rainbow colours in the evening, to the artworks and cluster of hanging Turkish lamps overhead, it is a definite must-visit if you want to enjoy a touch of Arabia across from Umm Al Emarat Park.

Heba Buhazzaa

Where can visitors find the best Emirati sweets and coffee? Lugimat, a delicious Emirati sweet, is best found in the house of a local family but, if you are just visiting, you can go to Al Fanar in the Ritz Carlton – it’s the best place to try traditional Emirati food. The very best way to beat the summer heat is with an affogato from Rain Café in Al Wahda.

What’s your ‘never-miss’ restaurant? For all round quality, Zuma is unbeatable. The food is amazing, the service impeccable, the setting is cool, and it’s an excellent value — especially the brunch. Up at the other end of town is a personal favourite: the Forge in the RitzCarlton; it’s beautifully laid out, and the food is exceptional.

Al Ain

The secret Garden City of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, has waves, safari parks, luxurious hotels and shopping malls as well as an increasingly fine dining scene. Yalla rounds up the activities you’ve heard that you simply must do in Al Ain and some you may not have.

Al Ain Oasis

Walking through a desert oasis comprised of 147,000 date palms and fruit bearing trees like mangos, oranges, bananas and figs is a very unexpected and immersive experience for all the family. The city of Al Ain owes its name to this 1200-hectare oasis, which has been cultivated for several thousand years. The oasis has working examples of the falaj, an indigenous system of complex water channels that tap into underground wells. You can also explore narrated trails that criss-cross the interior paths of the oasis, either by foot or even better using the bike rentals available. Culture & Heritage

When in Al Ain, do not miss out on the city’s six UNESCO culture heritage sites nor its vast wealth of historical buildings and museums.

Jebel Hafeet (“jebel” means mountain in Arabic) is the second largest peak in the UAE. An ancient seabed jutting out from the sands at an altitude of 1,250 metres above sea level, the spectacular views offered by the peak attract thousands of tourists annually. There’s a steep road which winds 12-miles up the mountain, with several scenic points along the way that make beautiful backdrops for photos. You will also find a café and a hotel at the top for refreshments. Located south of the Al Ain border shared with Oman, past the Green Mubazzarah park.

Camel Souk

PHOTOGRAPHY BY © DEPARTMENT OF CULTURE AND TOURISM – ABU DHABI

If you are keen for a traditional UAE experience, a visit to the camel souk is a must. There is no formal admission price or process as this is a working livestock market, and you may wander the animal pens and take photos for free. The Camel Souk is a working market with animals being bought and sold, so do stay out of the way and always ask for permission before taking anyone’s photo. Women should dress modestly as the market is mostly trafficked by men, and you are likely to feel all eyes upon you as you move about the pens and pose for photos. The Camel Souk is located just past Bawadi Mall behind IKEA and Google Maps is able to guide you there.

Al Ain National Museum

Al Ain Palace Museum

Al Ain Palace Museum, the former home of the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was once a political and social hub. The meandering complex of courtyards was renovated to reflect traditional designs and opened as a museum to the public in 2001. You can see how the family lived, and how local and international dignitaries were received, including the tent that Sheikh Zayed used to host guests during the winter in true Bedouin style. Al Jahili Fort

Set in lush landscaped gardens, the picturesque Al Jahili Fort and the stepped tiers of the main tower are one of Al Ain’s most iconic structures. The fort was built in 1891 to protect palm plantations, ensuring inter-tribal peace and protecting the mountain passes. Inside the fort, the small photo exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger is worth stopping for alone. The British explorer crossed the Empty Quarter in the midforties on camel back and documented what he saw with his camera. Be sure to take in the documentary movie on site and view the small exhibition on Sheikh Zayed The First. Sultan Bin Zayed Al Awwal Street, Al Ain. Telephone: +971 3 711 8311

Qasr Al Muwaiji

The Al Ain National Museum is the oldest museum in the UAE. Its collection of archaeological artefacts from digs across the UAE outlines the history of settlement in this region, from the Stone Age to the present. The museum also has a unique exhibition of gifts presented by various dignitaries to UAE rulers.

Qasr Al Muwaiji is the birthplace of the President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The square enclosure with projecting corner towers and a grand entrance gate was used as a diwan (a council or seat of governance) and as a place for the community to congregate. It is now open to visitors as a museum and exhibition outlining the chronology of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family and Sheikh Khalifa’s life story.

Visitors can hire a car provided they are over 18 years old and hold a full driving licence from an approved country. Do check the rules before you hit the road.

It is forbidden to photograph people without consent. Avoid taking snaps of aircraft, or in restricted areas, such as bridges, courts, and government or military zones. Be careful when posting your photos of people on social media without their consent as it’s considered an invasion of privacy.

Visitors and residents are advised to dress sensibly in public places. Swimsuits and bikinis are acceptable when by the beach or pool. It is suggested that women dress a bit more modestly than home, but there is no need to cover your body from head to toe.

Some medicines available on prescription or at pharmacies in your home country may not be approved for sale or use here in the UAE. Any visitor bringing medication with them, even if Abu Dhabi isn’t their final destination, should check to see if their medication is permitted before they leave.

It is easy to get around the city, and in particular to get to your final destination once you step off the plane at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Authorised metered taxis are available outside the Arrivals area at the airport, and a taxi into the city will cost you around AED100.

The UAE is an Islamic country and follows the customs, rules, and traditions of the Islamic faith. The daily call to prayer, which takes places five times, can be heard throughout the day. If you have time, a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is highly recommended.

Information provided by visitabudhabi.ae • All visitors to the UAE must have medical insurance cover, as per UAE federal law and Abu Dhabi Government law. If it’s an emergency case, treatment to stabilise the case is free. However, other treatment must be covered by a cash payment or by an insurance card for all covered individuals. • Abu Dhabi Police operates a dedicated Tourism Police department, which will advise and guide you on a range of matters. You can contact them on +971 2 800 2626. • If you’re involved in a traffic accident, it’s important to contact the police immediately. In case of a minor incident, move your car to the roadside, as there are fines for obstructing traffic. You cannot file an insurance claim without a police report.
