INTRODUCTION TO THE UAE To understand Abu Dhabi, you must first understand the UAE 05
THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
The United Arab Emirates B efore you begin exploring the sights of Abu Dhabi and the surrounding emirates, we thought we would provide a quick overview of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Located along the Arabian Gulf, the UAE has it all. From year-round sunshine, sandy beaches, great shopping, rich heritage, theme parks, major events and dining to suit every taste, there really is something for everyone here. The ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan took office in 2004, following the death of his father, the UAE’s founder, Sheikh Zayed who was the founder of the federation of the seven emirates that became the UAE in 1971. Abu Dhabi was named capital of the other six emirates: Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE has one of the world’s largest oil reserves, and at one point the region’s wealth depended mainly on this industry before the construction, manufacturing and tourism sectors began to flourish. Today, the UAE thrives in many industries which are boosting both visitor and resident numbers year-on-year. Based on the latest UN estimates in October 2017, the population of the UAE is just over 9.4 million, making it one of the largest countries in the Middle East. During your visit, it won’t take you long to experience the warmth and welcoming nature of the Emirati people, and the friendly outlook of the expats who have settled here. Emiratis adore family life, so the lifestyle here is very much focused on maintaining a familyorientated society.
Understanding the UAE is impossible without understanding the life of Sheikh Zayed and his deep religious faith, vision, determination and hard work. Emiratis are very proud of their present as well as their past, and their Founding Father Sheikh Zayed was quoted saying: “He who does not know his past cannot make the best of his present and future, for it is from the past that we learn.”

o say Abu Dhabi is modern is an understatement. The UAE is younger than many of the people who live here, but that’s not to say it has no past. People first settled in the UAE approximately 7,000 years ago. Yet, until the late 1950s and before the discovery of oil, Abu Dhabi was a small coastal town with a few hundred huts, a couple of buildings and a fort.

Over 250 years ago, a party of hunters followed a gazelle at low tide onto the island of Abu Dhabi. The legend goes that they found a small spring and reported back to the ruler of the day. He gave orders that a village should be established close to the spring, and today’s ‘City of Abu Dhabi’ was formed. Abu Dhabi means ‘Father of the Gazelle’. Today, huge skyscrapers and residential towers rise from where only sand existed just a few decades ago. The Emirate is proud of its past, and there are many attractions around the capital to help you step back in time and experience what it was like to live here. When you explore the cultural and heritage attractions, you will quickly discover that Abu Dhabi is a destination where respect for the past informs the present and shapes the future.
in Abu Dhabi Day 1: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque & Wahat Al Karama Start your Abu Dhabi culture tour with TripAdvisor’s number one rated attraction: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The mosque has a 82 white shiny domes, golden colonnades and features stunning flower inlays across its marble flooring and walls. Free public tours are available daily in many languages, to give guests insight into its unique architecture. Alternatively, you can meander through the mosque and its grounds at your own pace. Around sunset, the Mosque is bathed in a beautiful light making it ideal for photos (take the 5pm tour for this). Then go across the road to see an impressive fusion between art and architecture: the Wahat Al Karama Remembrance Memorial. The monument is a tribute to the men who gave their lives for the UAE. 31 huge aluminium-clad slabs lean against one another in an intriguing arrangement. Step down into the half-buried Pavilion of Honour and enjoy a moment of rest and reflection. www.szgmc.ae

CULTURE & HERITAGE
Day 2: Heritage Village & Marina Breakwater Where the city meets the sea, tourists can find a wealth of insight into old Abu Dhabi at The Heritage Village. A firm favourite with tourists, this is the best place to get the feel for traditional desert life. Enter Bedouin tents made from goats’ hair and wander through the tiny oasis or visit the craftsmen’s’ workshops courtyard situated across from the neat little museum. A traditional restaurant offers a refreshing mint and lemon juice replete with stunning views of the Abu Dhabi skyline and the Corniche. For great shots of Abu Dhabi’s skyscrapers across the sea, walk a bit further along the breakwater to the giant flag pole and the rotunda of the National Theatre. If you want to add some modern luxury into your journey to the past, head to Marina Mall, which is just across the road from the Heritage Village.
Palace, fortress, and seat of government until 1966, Qasr Al Hosn is the historic centre of Abu Dhabi. It was the city’s first permanent building when it started out as a watchtower more than 250 years ago. Renovations of the coral and sea stone structures have transformed the site into a major cultural centre are nearly complete. Check out the incredible photos series of the fort in a tranquil desert setting 70 years ago to appreciate just how much the emirate has changed since the discovery of oil. Then hire a bicycle and enjoy the seabreeze as you cruise the 8km stretch of the Corniche promenade. Parking is free and available next to Nation Towers on Corniche Road. Use the pedestrian underpass to access the beach side. www.qasralhosn.ae
DAY 4: Women’s Handicraft Centre & Umm Al Emarat Park Pop into the Women’s Handicraft Centre, a government-run initiative where local women keep Bedouin crafts alive, such as palm weaving, saddu tapestry making and telli braiding. Visitors have the rare opportunity to meet the guardians of local heritage in their traditional dress at work. Stock up on souvenirs that are made by the women you encounter or have a henna design piped on your hand. Women, men, and children are all welcome. Afterwards, take a quick taxi ride to a surprisingly lush green retreat. Umm Al Emarat Park. Stroll along beautiful palm tree-lined walks or take the kids to visit the animal barn. The park includes art installations, botanic gardens, play parks, as well as food trucks and cafés. For more information follow @ummalemaratpark on Facebook.

Day 3: Qasr Al Hosn & the Corniche
DAY 5: Emirates Palace & the Founder’s Memorial The best way to get a real feel for the UAE’s past is to visit the Founder’s Memorial in Ras Al Akhdar. The Memorial is a permanent national tribute dedicated to commemorating the life, legacy and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. The public artwork named The Constellation is a dynamic threedimensional portrait of the late Sheikh Zayed that can be experienced differently from multiple viewing points around the memorial. Drop by Emirates Palace next door to sample UAE opulence with the palace’s signature 24k Gold-flaked cappuccino. If you have time, head to the top of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers to get a bird’s eye view of the neighbourhood and partake of the best city views in town.
DAY 6: The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Make a day out of one of the most sought-after tours in the capital: the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. This is the largest falcon hospital in the world. The tour begins with a primer on falcons, and you will learn why the bird is revered as the national bird of the UAE. The most unique feature of the tour is seeing a falcon pedicure. While the falcon is sedated, its talons are trimmed, and visitors have the unique opportunity to feel the falcon’s resting heartbeat. The tour then continues to the aviary, where short-term residential falcons soar freely above you. The tour lasts approximately two hours, and visitors will depart understanding why the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is ranked the second most popular destination in Abu Dhabi on TripAdvisor. Do book in advance. www.falconhospital.com

hough Al Ain is a relatively sleepy city in the desert, visitors may be surprised to discover that it has surfing, safari parks, luxurious hotels and shopping malls, as well as an increasingly fine dining scene. Don’t leave the UAE without spending a few days in the Oasis City.
DAY 1: Al Ain Oasis & Hili Archaeological Garden Begin your visit to Al Ain by visiting the city’s six UNESCO world heritage sites and take a walk back in time—nearly 4,500 years to be exact. The city of Al Ain owes its name to the Al Ain Oasis, a 1200-hectare oasis consisting of 147,000 date palms and fruit bearing trees like mangos, oranges, bananas and figs. The oasis has working examples of the falaj, an indigenous system of complex water channels that tap into underground wells. To see an example of ancient bronze age tombs, stop by the nearby Hili Archaeological Garden, a public garden where archaeological remains dot the lush lawns. At the heart of the park is the circular Hili Grand Tomb from the Umm an-Nar period (about 2500 BCE to 2000 BCE), evidence of just how long humans have been settled in this area.

CULTURE & HERITAGE
DAY 2: Jebel Hafeet viewing platform & the Camel Souk Break up your trip with some sightseeing and camel sightings when you visit the second largest peak in the UAE: Jebel Hafeet. This ancient seabed jutting out from the sands at an altitude of 1,250 metres above sea level offers spectacular views. There’s a steep road which winds 12 miles up the mountain, with several scenic points along the way. At the top, there is a café for views and refreshments. Then drop by the Camel Souk to see a traditional livestock market. This is a working market so Yalla suggests that you stay out of the way and always ask for permission before taking anyone’s photo. Women should dress modestly as the market is mostly trafficked by men, and you’ll be watched as you as you move about the pens. The Camel Souk is located just past Bawadi Mall behind IKEA, and Google Maps is able to guide you there.
Dedicate a day to learn about the history of the UAE. Start with the oldest museum in the UAE: Al Ain National Museum. Its collection of archaeological artefacts from digs across the UAE outlines the history of settlement in this region. Drop by the birthplace of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Qasr Al Muwaiji, to learn where the story of the modern UAE began. The museum outlines the chronology of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family. Visit the former home of the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan: Al Ain Palace Museum. See how the family lived, and how local and international dignitaries were received. End your day at one of Al Ain’s most iconic structures: the picturesque Al Jahili Fort. The fort was built in 1891 to ensure inter-tribal peace, and to protect the mountain passes and palm plantations. www.qasralmuwaiji.ae.
DAY 4: Finish with Food and Fun!
Just like its sister city to the west, Al Ain is not short on adrenalin sports and family attractions. Those with younger children will delight in the Al Ain Zoo and African Safari, while older children will find the thrilling water attractions, such as world-class surfing, kayaking, and white-water rafting irresistible at Wadi Adventure. Choose one or do both but make sure to head into the city to partake in a variety of excellent dining spots. Yalla highly recommends Pizza di Rocco for pizza, Coriander for delicious modern Indian food, and Trader Vics at the Al Ain Rotana for its legendary Polynesian food.

DAY 3: Make it a Museum Day
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is incredibly beautiful and awe-inspiring - with its 82 white gleaming domes, golden colonnades and giant marble flower inlays, which stretch across the huge central courtyard. Seen as the key site for worship in the United Arab Emirates, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also the largest mosque in the country. It spans across an area of 555,000 square metres and its four impressive main minarets soar 106 metres into the sky. A little-known feature of the Mosque is its unique lighting system, which is designed to reflect the phases of the moon. There are 22 light towers which project soft clouds of a ‘bluish grey’ colour onto the exterior of the mosque and change according to the moon phase every night.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIAN JOHN
As you stand back and admire the beauty of this place of worship, you can appreciate the incredible architecture inspired by the founder, and first President of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His vision was to build a mosque that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world incorporating the old and modern world of architecture and art. Built over a 11-year period and boasting Arabic calligraphy in its design, the Mosque, which opened in 2007, attracts over 4.5 million worshippers and visitors each year. Today, it remains the most visited attraction in Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a prominent landmark across the capital’s skyline and is open for free daily tours for visitors.

Emirati Experiences
The very best way to learn about a new city is to mingle with the locals, and Abu Dhabi makes this pursuit quite easy. Book an Emirati Experience or hire a guide to get to know the capital.
Meet Mohamed Al Hammadi Mohamed is one of the most experienced guides out of all the Emirati Experience providers. He leads tours on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Carpets & Antiques, and the Pearl Journey. Mohamed shares stories about the latter experience with Yalla.
How did you get into this line of work?
Upon my return from my study in the United States and majoring in marketing, I felt eager to promote my country for tourists and visitors, I had a strong command of English and the Arabic Language, so I felt I had the perfect skill set needed for the position.
What are guests most surprised to learn on your tours?
That our national dress has a deep purpose and meaning and how simple and modest it is, yet how smart and comfy it is at the same time.
What do you hope guests will take away from your tours and tell people about Abu Dhabi when they go home?
The U.A.E is a young nation that had a global vision built upon a foundation. Even before the idea of tolerance was shaped and we travelled globally, the U.A.E people were tolerant and kind by nature. They love to make humans happier day after day and that can be seen in our initiatives that stretch to the far reaches of the world. Our art of hospitality and articulated care of our visitors is our trade mark. Nobody leaves the U.A.E without a little piece of the nation in one’s heart.
I’m a certified tour guide for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and an honorary “Abu Dhabi Ambassador.” The Pearl Journey is one of the top experiences that I do. I welcome tourists on a traditional dhow boat to explore our pearl-diving history. Tourists get the chance to open a live oyster to look for a pearl that he or she can keep for himself after the journey is done.
Can you share one interesting fact/story about the pearls diving that few people will know? It takes the average Arabian gulf pearl a year and a half to two years until it forms within the oyster shell. There are 12 different natural shades of oysters, and the colour has nothing to do with the species nor the depth of the sea. Diet determines an oyster’s colour. Can you give us a short description of your Pearl Journey Tour?
The Art of Dialogue
Hashel Al Lamki Hashal Al Lamki is a UAE-based artist who has gained a reputation for poignant multimedia artwork that cross-examines the stories we tell ourselves and opens dialogues, using over-sized collaborative canvases and ambitious themes.
What is the role of an artist in society? Artists play many different roles. I can only speak to my own: my role is to be honest and genuine with my practice rather than trying to be slick, commercial, or to impress anyone. I try to engage with the public and create dialogues.
Please describe your art. This is the hardest question that I am ever asked. You see, I have no one medium. It’s boring to become a master of any one medium, so I am constantly experimenting with literally anything I find in front of me. If I had to list it, I would say my media is paint, sculpture, performance, but that list goes on. Critical thinking lies at the heart of my every work, and I am constantly interested in conversation using different voices and diverse media.
Tell us about Bait 15—your artistic collaboration with other UAE-based artists.
You just closed a group exhibition with Al Mazourei at NYUAD called Allibadiah. Can you tell us a bit about it? My dialogues with Mohamed are always rich in content and inspiring to my critical thinking. After one of our countless dynamic conversations about existence, evolution, or any other philosophical matter, I would always paint through my after thoughts. Much like people used to correspond in letters, after Mohamed left, we began to correspond visually through our paintings. Allibadiah is basically two artists’ dialogues visualised. Bait means “House” in Arabic, and Bait 15 was conceived in early 2018 by a group of young artists who shared one common need: studio space. Before we opened Bait, we worked from hypothetical places. We felt that working in such silos was not healthy and can lead to artistic narcissism. So, we decided to take over the lease of the villa of the departing artist Mohamed Al Mazourei.
ART IN ABU DHABI
Art in Abu Dhabi Bubbling below the surface of Abu Dhabi’s gleaming skyscrapers is a grassroots art scene, known to few. Yalla picks the best spots to experience art in public places, in galleries, in stores, and even in coffee shops.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
A decade in the making, the Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in 2017 to critical acclaim. The building itself is a work of art. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel’s geometric domed roof is spectacular, and its design allows a ‘rain of light’ to shower through. The inside also doesn’t disappoint with its expansive exhibition space, 12 galleries and a detached stage located in the sea. Each room flows clearly to the next – evidence of the journey through time and the museum itself being meticulously planned. Its new Art Lounge offers a lovely space to socialise while enjoying the beautiful view of Abu Dhabi’s skyline or take in a sunset over drinks and dinner. Families must visit the dedicated children’s museum and try the hands-on family workshops. Saadiyat Cultural District. Website: www.louvreabudhabi.ae

Warehouse 421
Housed in two repurposed warehouses in the bustling Mina Port, Warehouse 421 is a vibrant hub for creativity. Much of the work housed within focuses on the UAE or is made by Emirati artists and the artwork changes quarterly. Past exhibitions have included emerging Emirati talent, UAE contributions to the Venice Biennial, and a poignant window into Emirati family photographs from the late 20th century. They offer free workshops, so children and adults may explore their creativity and learn UAE handicrafts. Mina Port. Website: www.warehouse421.ae

After browsing the artwork, go for a bite to eat in the neighbouring and fittingly creative Art House Café run by the owners of the gallery. Quirky décor and striking artwork adorn the walls alongside colourful furnishings made out of repurposed items, such as oil barrel tables and stools, giving the café an edgy feel. orn of the special rapport shared by Abu Dhabi and France, Louvre Abu Dhabi is a universal museum that celebrates the world’s vibrant cross-cultural connections, from the birth of civilisation to the present day. The museum’s innovative curatorial approach reconsiders global art history and shares stories from previously overlooked parts of the world. The museum’s growing collection is unparalleled in the region and spans half a million years of human history, including prehistoric tools, artefacts, religious texts, iconic paintings and contemporary sculpture. The permanent collection features a robust collection of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s artworks and is supplemented by rotating loans from 13 French partner institutions and international museums. Louvre Abu Dhabi is redefining the museum landscape not only in the Middle East, where it is a pioneer for the cultural industries, but also globally. Though universal in theme, the museum is firmly rooted in the region, displaying important pieces that demonstrate the ancient history and archaeology of the UAE and the Gulf. Reflecting the UAE’s multicultural

A World of Exchange Louvre Abu Dhabi is simply not a museum you visit just once. Here are some current and upcoming exhibitions as well as a diversity of cultural programmes to look forward to this season.
Japanese Connections: The Birth of Modern Décor
(6 September – 24 November 2018) Japanese Connections traces the influence of the iconic Japanese Ukiyo-e aesthetic on modern French decorative artists, through a presentation of more than 40 prints, paintings and screens. East meets West in this unique exploration of the influence of Japanese art on modern decoration. Following the opening up of Japan to the West in the 1850s, artists, designers and makers across Europe became gripped by a new fashion or ‘Japonisme’. The “Manga Lab” has been added for teenagers and young adults to explore Japanese youth culture. Japanese artworks are brought to life through virtual reality, and there are lots of activities, such as retro arcade gaming, an expression wall, a chill-out reading area, and a series of workshops exploring the art of Manga and graphic comics. The museum’s café also features a special Japanese-inspired menu offered throughout the duration of the exhibition.
Roads of Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia (8 November 2018 – 16 February 2019)
The much-acclaimed Roads of Arabia explores the rich history of the Arabian Peninsula through archaeological and cultural artefacts, including a selection of rare pieces from the United Arab Emirates.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOUVRE ABU DHABI
The exhibition takes visitors through five chapters in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, spanning early prehistoric settlements and periods of exploration. A performance called “On the Roads of Arabia” will feature the music, dances, and poetry of 80 artists from the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, India, Indonesia and China with a contemporary, calligraphic street art drawing designed by Tunisian artist Koom.

Take an Art Voyage Take a journey amidst the world’s leading art and culture highlights in one day under one fabulous roof and be sure to bring the kids!
Mark your calendars! Come out to help the Louvre Abu Dhabi celebrate its first birthday in November and then get caught in its rain of light in December!
First Anniversary Celebrations
8 – 11 November 2018
Bringing your young children to a museum can be daunting; kids naturally want to touch and feel things, and that usually doesn’t work well with priceless art and artefacts. So, the Louvre Abu Dhabi decided to house a Children’s Museum within the museum that is hand’s on and fun! The Children’s Museum of the Louvre Abu Dhabi is an exploratory space and a stimulating environment that engages young minds, using different hands-on techniques and interactive tools, to engage directly with the artworks, evoking curiosity, thinking and analytical skills. The Children’s Museum presents its own special exhibitions, with artworks displayed in specially designed cases at children’s eye level and interactive mediation tools. With a range of immersive and interactive zones, the Children’s Museum offers a programme of hands-on activities and educational workshops. Studio spaces are on hand to ensure that our young visitors and their families can experiment with different art techniques, play with materials, and acquire a good understanding of a museum’s purpose through activities and workshops led by specialists to enhance their museum experience.
To mark the museum’s first anniversary, Louvre Abu Dhabi has planned a week of celebrations between 8 and 11 November, including a Dua Lipa Concert, On the Roads of Arabia performance from 8 - 10 November, Spoken Art, and Pop Up Architecture. There will also be a special edition of Rooftop Rhythms introducing spoken word artists from around the world who will put on poetic art performances inspired by the museum’s artworks.
An Exhibition of One’s Own If kids were asked to curate a museum exhibition, it would surely include mummified cats and mixed up beasts. Well, this exhibition has all that and more! Animals: Between Real and Imaginary explores how animals have been represented creatively throughout art history from all eras and regions. Visitors are introduced to a variety of materials and techniques used by the artists to represent both real and imaginary animals. A workshop titled “Animal Footprints” will run until 30 June 2019, and allow children to follow the footprints of the exhibition’s animals to discover their meaning and the power of their representation in art.

The 10th annual Abu Dhabi Art celebrates a decade of fine art on what’s becoming a world art stage. The capital’s most anticipated art fair returns with an unprecedented line-up as part of its tenth edition, running from14-17 November at the Manarat Al Saadiyat Museum. Dyala Nusseibeh, Director, Abu Dhabi Art says, “For our 10th edition, Abu Dhabi Art is honoured to collaborate with phenomenal curators and pioneering local and international artists including our curator for Beyond: Emerging Artists, Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim and our commissioned artists for historic sites in Al Ain. Each edition brings a different constellation of cultural leaders together and this year promises to be an engaging edition thanks to their depth of knowledge, expertise and generous contributions to the programme.” Abu Dhabi Art has further expanded its Beyond section with the launch of Beyond: Emerging Artists, which is being led by leading Emirati artist Mohammad Kazem and artist, curator and writer Cristiana de Marchi. The co-curators will select three emerging UAE-based artists to undertake a tailor-made artist programme with them. They will then be tasked with creating works to be exhibited both during Abu Dhabi Art 2018 as well as for an additional two months after the fair’s conclusion.
Artist collective Bait 15 will also offer an innovative installation to the three-day line up. UAE-based artist and co-founder of Bait 15 Hashel Lamki, says “I am very excited about Bait 15’s contribution to Abu Dhabi Art. We are opening our studio up to the public one day during the three-day art fair. The concept is that we are bringing the public space into our “home,” even though we don’t live there; we just work there. The house is, in a way, a character in this installation. We are also exploring the idea of family, and what it’s like to be a complete stranger walking into a family, and what exactly is “family.” Is family only a blood relation, or can it be more? The details are not final, so follow Bait 15 and Abu Dhabi Art on social media for details.” Whether you are a serious art collector or just an art lover, you will find art that inspires you and makes you think at the tenth annual Abu Dhabi Art fair. Musical Desert
Abu Dhabi redefines this term, as it sets its sights on having a music scene as pulsating as the world’s many major cities, with one man its maestro. Meet Bill Bragin.
Abu Dhabi is on a mission to create an arts and cultural scene to rival the world, and its epicentre is Saadiyat Island. One man has made it is mission to bring the world’s many and varied musical styles to audiences in the capital. That man is Bill Bragin. He is the executive artistic director of The Art Center at NYU Abu Dhabi. Bill shared with Yalla his insights into composing a musical scene in Abu Dhabi.
How would you define your role on the Abu Dhabi art scene?
I see my role as one which is designed to complement the work which is already happening here, and to bring new ideas and artists to the conversation. I’m particularly interested in artists who are balancing culturally specific influences from their own heritage with contemporary, international tendencies. I’m also interested in artists who are using their work to open conversations about important global issues.
With so many cultures represented here, how do you please/represent everyone?
It’s impossible to please/represent everyone, but I do try to present a broad range of work that reflects so many communities who make their homes here. It’s important that many different communities see themselves on our stages. I look for work that resonates broadly. For example, in a place where more than 85% of the population have come from somewhere else, and even for Emiratis, the country changes so rapidly, the question of what makes a place feel like home is a resonant idea. Our program addresses how artists ponder such unanswerable questions, as a way to inspire more people to come up with their own approaches.

What most surprised you about Abu Dhabi?
I was surprised at the incredible diversity. Even as a New Yorker used to living in an extremely international city, I was surprised by the internationalism and its street life. It’s easy to be fooled if you spend most of your time on the main avenues in a car. Abu Dhabi is a great walking city, and I like to linger in the neighbourhoods within the superblocks to appreciate the small bakeries, karak cafeterias, and gents’ saloons, as well as so many amazing non-hotel restaurants. A touch of tradition...
For something a little more special and close to the heart of UAE culture, why not relax onboard a traditional dhow vessel, which was used years ago by merchants and traders on the waters of the Gulf, and take in spectacular views of the sun setting against the Abu Dhabi skyline. Abu Dhabi Dhow Cruises hosts day and evening cruise tours around the capital. Some also offer options to have dinner onboard, so you can dine as you enjoy the sights. Daily cruises begin and end from the Mina Port on the Corniche. If you fancy a romantic evening, couples cruises are also available. Alternatively, you might like to experience dining on a traditional Arabian dhow, so try Rikks Floating Dhow from Yas Marina.

In the Swing Whether you can swing it like Rory McIlroy or just appreciate the great outdoors, winter is the season to get out on the greencourse in the capital. Here’s why, and here’s where!
Yalla sat down with Ed Edwards, Group General Manager of Abu Dhabi Golf Club and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club to learn about the increasing popularity of the game of golf and just why Abu Dhabi is becoming a golf destination of choice in the world.
Why is Abu Dhabi so popular for golf?
Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital, provides golfers with a plethora of options when it comes to excellent golf on championship courses. Whether it’s a parkland course, a links course, or a floodlit course, there is something for every golfer in Abu Dhabi. Regularly attracting the best players in the game at multiple events throughout the year, Abu Dhabi is now in the spotlight and is seeing great growth in the global golf marketplace.
When golfers think of golf in Abu Dhabi, why do they always think of Abu Dhabi Golf Club?
For most golfers it is almost impossible to think of Abu Dhabi without thinking of Abu Dhabi Golf Club, The Home of Champions, as it hosts the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. The tournament has been a mainstay in the calendar for 13 years and, unlike many other events on the European circuit, it is able to attract a host of American talent including the likes of Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and 2016 winner Rickie Fowler. All these players fight it out under the shadow of the iconic Falcon Clubhouse, creating an electric atmosphere for anyone watching. Abu Dhabi’s sister course, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, is also widely revered. Like Abu Dhabi Golf Club, it also managed by Troon and hosts a major golf event, the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open, on the Ladies European Tour, which welcomes fierce competition each year. The Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open is at the forefront of growing golf in the UAE and as a result has seen a spike in ladies golf as a result of the quality of the event. The Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy also encourages Emirati ladies to play golf and is a legacy from the event. Those wishing to experience something a little different can head over to Yas Links, the first true links course in the region. Away from the courses, these venues offer guests and members the chance to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in fantastic all-year-round family friendly restaurants, either under the famous Falcon Clubhouse, or on the Hawksbill terrace surrounded by gazelles and the beauty of Saadiyat Island. So you don’t even need to play golf to be welcomed to the clubs and enjoy what the facilities have to offer. adgolfclub.com | sbgolfclub.ae | yaslinks.com

GOLFING IN ABU DHABI
Get on the Green
January is the month for golf, and here’s what fans of the sport have to look forward to in 2019. Check Yalla’s websites for tournament dates in Decemeber.
Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open The Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy and Abu Dhabi Sports Council, in partnership with the Ladies European Tour (LET), are set to host the third Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open from 10-12 January. This event marks a milestone event in the women’s golfing calendar, as it was the first-ever ladies professional golf event to take place in Abu Dhabi and is always a great occasion for a family day out with plenty of activities for children.
Gary Player Invitational
The Gary Player Invitational offers a world-class golfing experience while simultaneously raising funds for charity. A star-studded cast of golf professionals and celebrities will join Gary Player on 13 January at Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Beach Golf Club over two days, to celebrate a ‘Union of Golf and Giving’. This is golf that you can feel very good about.
The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is often deemed the unofficial start to the European Tour, drawing in massive names every year, with an attractive prize pot of around $2,700,000. Last year eight of the World’s Top 20 played in the early season event, leading to another thrilling championship in Abu Dhabi. Next year’s event is predicted to be no different, as Tommy Fleetwood will be looking to capture an incredible three consecutive wins at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Previous years have seen 72,000 fans attend, with numerous activities to look out for in another impressive tournament village from16-19 January.
Don’t just trust Yalla and Ed! Here’s what some of the world’s top golfers have said about Abu Dhabi’s legendary greens. Dustin Johnson, World Number #1 2018

Discover Emirati Food
Given Abu Dhabi’s diverse food scene, many visitors leave without ever trying Emirati cuisine. Don’t be one of them. Here’s everything you need to know.
E

mirati cuisine is a perfect reflection of local traditions and heritage. Much like the nation’s diverse population, UAE cuisine reflects a mixture of cultures and influences and is indeed an homage to the cuisine of neighbouring countries such as India, Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan. However, the nation’s traditional local cuisine often goes untasted by both residents and tourists alike given the international bounty, so Yalla explores Emirati cuisine so you can too.
Traditional Emirati Food Throughout history, the traditional Emirati meal centred around fish and game, such as camels, goats, and local fish. Today, you’ll see dishes prepared with chicken as well, which became more accessible following the oil boom. The ancestors of UAE, known as Bedouins, were nomadic people who travelled across the desert. Because of their long and arduous journeys, meals incorporated complex carbohydrates in order to provide the travellers with sufficient energy. Most of the dishes are delicately flavoured with spices like turmeric, saffron, cardamom, and cinnamon. These are spices that hail from India, indicating the influence that trade with Indian merchants had upon Emirati cuisine. Every home makes a unique mixture or masala of spices, so it’s rare for any two homecooked meals to ever taste the same.

Dine as locals do
Home-cooked meals are obviously preferable, but if you’re just visiting, Yalla rounds up a few restaurants where you can dine as the locals do barring a welcomed and enviable invitation into an Emirati home.
Al Fanar Restaurant & Café
Al Fanar recreates a Bedouin-style neighbourhood complete with barasti booths, mud-brick rooms, and a mini souk which diners can peruse at their leisure. Choose from an array of traditional Emirati dishes, from regag bread and balalit noodles to biryani, prawns and an Emirati specialty jesheed (crumbled shark).
Yadoo’s House
Meaning ‘Grandmother’s House’, Yadoo’s House feels more like a family home than a restaurant with its simple furnishings. Serving an array of options from grilled local fish to classic Emirati mains such as harees (chicken soup) and machboos (meat and rice), it’s nearly impossible to leave Yadoo’s House hungry; we challenge you to try!
Meylas
Mezlai
Located within Emirates Palace, Mezlai offers diners the most luxurious setting to experience traditional Emirati cuisine. Furnished with Bedouin emblems, this awardwinning restaurant is reminiscent of a Bedouin tent and pays homage to the heritage of the nation. This is the most opulent destination for those seeking an authentic taste of the UAE.

Meylas celebrates the traditions of the nation and serves childhood recipes crafted by Emirati mothers and grandmothers and prepared using only locally sourced ingredients. DINING
Q&A with Executive Chef Ali Ebdowa Culinary genius Ali Ebdowa celebrates Emirati heritage through food, and he is eager to serve up his modern twist on Emirati favourite dishes with a dash of national pride. He is also very proud to often deliver many visitor’s their first sampling of the cuisine. Yalla talked to chef Ebdowa to discover the secrets to his successful serving of Emirati cuisine.
How would you describe Emirati food to people who’ve not tried it yet? Simple, yet deceptively complex. Spiced, but not spicy. Emirati food, much like our population, is a weaving of cultures and cuisines, into a flavourfully modern tapestry.
When did you realise that you wanted to become a chef?
I travelled the world with my father as a teenager. Wherever we were and out of homesickness, I was constantly recreating my mother’s dishes. I love putting a modern and fun twist on traditional recipes.
How is Emirati food scene developing?
It’s been a slow process bringing the cuisine to more people. There aren’t many Emirati chefs. I am constantly searching for and trying to train more young chefs in Mezlai, but it takes time. I think it’s very important to train my chefs in, not just the preparation of the food, but also in the culture – when chefs really love and better understand the culture, their food simply tastes better. I love slow-cooked lamb machboos. It’s my favourite dish at home and in the restaurant. To me, it symbolises the authentic flavours and spice mixes found in the UAE perhaps more than any other dish. We serve it year-round in Mezlai, but, at home, I make it only during Eid, when I have the time for the best preparation that uses wood from the desert and certain leaves, which I select for their aroma they infuse into the meat.

When your ears pop in the elevator on your way to the 63rd floor, you know you’re almost at Ray’s Grill. No matter where you sit, you will be treated to the very best views in the capital. No matter what you order, trust that this is the spot to savour an exceptional steak. Sleek and simple, the décor in Ray’s is chic, and every single table offers a panoramic view of the skyline, so there’s not a bad seat in the house. The service at Ray’s is impeccable. Friendly and confident servers know their steaks as well as their pairings. Do ask your server to suggest a beverage that suits your steak. You are likely to be unusually pleased and surprised by the suggestion. Discerning meat lovers will be taken on a culinary journey through a diversity of world-famous cattle breeds sourced from the finest producers in Australia, Ireland, France, and the USA. Be sure to ask about Ray’s elusive salt menu, and your server will wheel over a trolley of salts from around the world. Likewise, there is an extensive selection of mustards and peppers to complement your cut. Do ask your server to guide you through the condiments. Allow Ray’s Grill to entice you with its high-quality fare, exceptional service, and panoramic city views. Ray’s Grill, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. 02 811 5666
The Perfect Cut
The perfect steak starts with the perfect cut. I’m not a fan of the usual cuts: tenderloin, striploin, or rib eye. I prefer Feather Blade also known as Butler’s Steak or Flat Iron. This is one of the most tender, juicy, and flavoursome cuts of beef you will ever taste. It comes from the shoulder of the animal and isn’t expensive. Just ask your butcher to remove the tough sinew right in the middle, and then you are ready to start. I also suggest you be a bit adventurous with your seasoning. Ray’s Grill’s selection of salts, peppers, and mustards sourced from all over the world elevates your steak to another level, and they are available for purchase, so you can try them at home.

Shopping

If there’s any city in the world that takes shopping seriously, it’s Abu Dhabi. Global brands as well as shoppers from the GCC and beyond flock to the capital to appreciate the grandiosity and ease of its shopping malls.
I
n an effort to create indoor recreation as thrilling as its outdoor counterpart, Abu Dhabi has built shopping malls with a zest known nowhere else in the world. So, it’s no wonder that stepping into an Abu Dhabi shopping mall is an experience in itself and simply must be done even if you aren’t in town to shop. Abu Dhabi has a vast choice of luxurious mega malls, local malls and traditional style souks dotted across the city. The wide marble-lined avenues, air-conditioning, convenient on-site car parking and vast array of international brands has helped shopping become
a popular attraction for tourists and residents alike throughout the year. Whether you’re looking for the perfect souvenir, designer handbag, a beach dress, children’s toy or pair of shoes, the choice is endless. In addition to a superb retail experience, the city’s malls offer world-class entertainment attractions and dining outlets, and they are all open late so you can shop and dine until the late evening. To help you get started with your shopping, here are Yalla’s top picks for shopping in Abu Dhabi.

Marina Mall Marina Mall is one of the older shopping centres in Abu Dhabi, and is often a visitor’s first stop in Abu Dhabi but there is so much more to do than just shop. The Marina Mall houses more than 400 high end and high street stores. Shoppers can while the day away indulging in one of the many upscale cafés, bowling, or visiting the 9-screen VOX cinema. The Mall has a mix of both luxury retailers as well as high street and local brands. On the Ground Floor, shoppers will also find a wide range of souvenir shops, shawl stands, electronics, and jewellry shops in case you are looking to pick up a souvenir of your visit. As one of Abu Dhabi’s distinctive landmarks, Marina Mall also offers a range of exciting programming and events that draw in the larger community. Bounce, an indoor trampoline park, is open to visitors of all ages at Marina Mall. Marina Mall attracts many local people who consider it a first stop on any shopping excursion. Peter Hellyer, contributor to The National offers that “La Brioche at Marina Mall is a must visit for out of town guests as it has not expensive, simple food, and is a great place to sit at the weekend to observe the interactions of Abu Dhabi’s diverse communities.” Beyond the shopping, the area is rife with other attractions. Take a leisurely stroll along the Corniche and take in epic views of the Abu Dhabi city skyline or rent a Cyacle and cruise the city’s main thoroughfare. A Hospitality Icon: Rotana Abu Dhabi was a very different city 25 years ago when the Rotana was founded. Yalla caught up with Selim El Zyr, Vice Chairman, Rotana to talk about the hotels.
Can you tell us what role you imagined the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi playing in that remarkably different hospitality landscape 25 years ago?
Rotana is a dream that was brought to life through the vision and longstanding friendship between Nasser Al Nowais and me, and it has been our pleasure to nurture this vision and watch it blossom over the last 25 years. As our very first property, the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi will always hold a special place in our hearts and those of our loyal guests.
What is the essence of Rotana hotels?
For Rotana, it is the promise of delivering ‘Treasured Time’. In today’s hectic world, time is precious. We recognise that where, how, and with whom people choose to spend their time is a very important decision, and our dedicated teams go the extra mile to ensure that when our guests choose Rotana, they are making the right decision.
Arabian hospitality is more than a motto; it’s a lifestyle. As an Abu Dhabi born hotel, explain how you have infused the concept into your brand?
Finally, can you share your favourite Beach Rotana memory with our readers?
Wow! There are many of those but it would have to be when welcoming our first guest into the hotel. Standing like a soldier I was with my department heads—excited and proud.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROTANA HOTEL MANAGEMENT CORPORATION
Rotana is fast becoming one of the world’s leading hotel brands, and we are very proud to be standing where we are today, competing with well-established international chains who entered the market before us. As a home-grown brand, we understand the region very well and have consistently leveraged this knowledge to adapt to the evolving needs of our guests, whether they are local or international travellers.

HOSPITALITY
Paradise Conserved Saadiyat hotels are committed to caring for their neighbourhood beaches to ensure the longevity of their destination’s surroundings and marine life. If location is everything, then Saadiyat Island has it all. Dolphins surf in its azure waters at sunrise, endangered Hawksbill turtles nest on its pristine white sandy beaches, and gazelles bound through the dunes on any given day. Maintaining this fragile ecological system in the midst of tireless development is the island’s mandate and one hotel has taken the lead. Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas is the only hotel in Abu Dhabi to employ a full-time marine biologist and conservation expert. Much like the hotel for which she works, Arabella Willing is committed to protecting the wildlife and beaches and to implementing strict environmental standards on the island.

A first look
Luxury with a Conscience The new Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort concept enables you to pamper yourself while doing your bit for the environment proving you can indulge yourself and feel good about it.
The Basics
The new Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort aspires to be a hotel with a conscience. The hotel’s many admirable qualities include eco-friendly touches that guests can feel very good about. The stylish décor is minimalist, hip, and green with an artsy lobby chandelier so striking it could moonlight in the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The Location
If location is everything, Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort’s exalted beachfront address may be the secret to its success. One of a string of luxury hotels dotted along Abu Dhabi’s pristine Saadiyat Beach, this hotel stands out for its signature futuristic design and lengthy stretch of sand.
The Rooms
The property’s 293 rooms include eight villas with private pools, 64 suites and six panoramic suites offering floorto-ceiling glass walls which open so guests may enjoy the sea breeze. Expansive sea views or extended patios overlook the pristine, unspoiled beach, and tranquil waters.
A Refreshing Plastic Ban Seated next to the water, the Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort has a vested interest in protecting its beautiful blue front yard, so the hotel is committed to preserving and conserving its pristine waters.
The Food
The eight restaurants include the chic all-day dining venue White. Mare Mare for authentic Italian summer food. TEAN serves mezzes and grills by the beach and Majilis Saadiyat and The Lounge are perfect for coffee and tea. The brilliant Pool Bar rounds out the dining offerings.
The Spa
Lose yourself in conscious pampering in the resort’s signature grand Moroccan hammam as you indulge in a cleansing ritual as old as time. Organic spa rituals and result driven spa therapies offer the ultimate way to unwind in the lap of luxury.
Bottom Line
If you love all things new and modern and are keen on supporting a hotel with a conscience, book your stay at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort and be among the first to sample this refreshing new take on hospitality.

They’ve partnered up with “Trust Your Water,” and the hotel will offer guests reusable plastic bottles, which can be refilled at the resort’s water stations, providing locally sourced filtered water. In guest rooms, water will be served in reusable glass bottles. The resort has also banned the use of plastic straws, favouring recycled material straws instead.
Ask a Concierge Sandra Newman has worked as a concierge at Emirates Palace for the past 12 years and is a member of the esteemed Les Clefs d’Or. She shares tips for unforgettable selfies, brunches, and views.
Tell me about one of your favourite places to send firsttime Abu Dhabi visitors. Once our guests have tasted Emirate Palace’s signature Palace Cappuccino, I recommend that they go straight to the Heritage Village and the Sheikh Zayed Centre to learn about the rise of our amazing Abu Dhabi.
What should be the background of my selfie?
The welcoming staircase of the majestic Emirates Palace will elevate your selfie from all the other generic modern backgrounds in Abu Dhabi. The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s amazing dome also makes a nice backdrop.
Tell me about your favourite hidden gem in Abu Dhabi.
The old-fashioned Mina Port and Fish Souk offer a trip back in time. Once you purchase your fresh fish, you go to the side of the market where your choice of restaurants will prepare it for you as you like.
Where should I eat if I want to celebrate a special occasion?
I will definitely steer you towards Emirates Palace’s magical BBQ Al Qasr restaurant, which boasts mouth-watering grilled dishes paired with the finest beverages.
What has been the craziest request you received?
Helicopter requests in the middle of the night are something guests think we discourage; however, we try to facilitate it. A request for dental work at 2 am in the morning. Believe it or not, there are still a few local dentists who agree to make palace calls.
What is your favourite restaurant?
My personal favourite restaurant has to be the MEAT Co, located in Souk Qaryat Al Beri due to its warm hospitality, great cuts of meat and the best night view of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the city.
Do you have a favourite brunch you like to recommend to guests?
PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMIRATES PALACE, BIGSTOCK
I will definitely recommend the Emirates Palace Brunch. If that’s fully booked, we send guests to Roberto’s, which also has an amazing sea view as well as authentic Italian food.
I want to experience historic Abu Dhabi. Where do you recommend that I go? The Pearl Journey highlights the history of the way the pearl dives were historically done, and it’s a fascinating and fun day out on the water.
What tips do you give first-timers?
Be mindful of the extreme temperatures and use sun block. Wear caps or hats also to protect yourself against the sun.

The local currency is the Emirati dirham, officially abbreviated “AED”. ATMs typically issue larger bank notes, but most hotels or money exchange outlets will offer an exchange service. Keep smaller notes ready for any taxi journeys as changing a larger note could be tricky.
The UAE follows Islamic traditions; therefore, everyone must understand and observe the social rules. Rude gestures or swear words, including on social media, are not permitted by law. It’s advisable to exercise common sense when posting comments about the UAE on social media.
One of the best things about the UAE is its guaranteed year-round sunshine. With refreshing water parks across the Emirate, and plenty of temperaturecontrolled indoor attractions and world-class shopping malls to keep visitors entertained, the emirate is a popular destination all year round.

People drive on the right-hand side of the road here. Seat belts are compulsory, and children under 12 must remain in the rear of the vehicle. Visitors can hire a car provided they are over 18 years old and hold a full driving licence from an approved country. Do check the rules before you hit the road.
It is forbidden to photograph people without consent. Avoid taking snaps of aircraft, or in restricted areas, such as bridges, courts, and government or military zones. Be careful when posting your photos of people on social media without their consent as it’s considered an invasion of privacy.

People
Visitors and residents are advised to dress sensibly in public places. Swimsuits and bikinis are acceptable when by the beach or pool. It is suggested that women dress a bit more modestly than at home, but there is no need to cover your body from head to toe.
Some medicines available on prescription or at pharmacies in your home country may not be approved for sale or use here in the UAE. Visitors bringing medication with them, even if Abu Dhabi isn’t their final destination, should check to see if their medication is permitted before they leave.
It is easy to get around the city, and in particular to get to your final destination once you step off the plane at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Authorised metered taxis are available outside the Arrivals area at the airport, and a taxi into the city will cost you around AED100.
The UAE is an Islamic country and follows the customs, rules, and traditions of the Islamic faith. The daily call to prayer, which takes places five times, can be heard throughout the day. If you have time, a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is highly recommended.
