This trunk has an attractive antique patina, which is completely original. This is evidenced by the canvas’s deep brown faded monogram motif, a hue only possible after years of elegant aging. More importantly, the trunk has a number of desirable original stickers attached showing provenance of first class travel from New York to Naples. Initialled “I A McG” for identification of the original owner. Inside, the trunk is complete with original hangers, lockable drawers, which is highly desired by collectors. ORIGINALITY 原始性 Each trunk we sell has been carefully examined and sourced only from trusted contacts. We have zero tolerance for counterfeit products. We are believers in originality over restoration. An Antique Louis Vuitton Trunk is original only once. Both I A McG and Double Red R we believe are rare collectible items with excellent patina which would be lost upon restoration. We are happy to discuss a restored Antique Louis Vuitton Trunk from our collection at your convenience. 9

LOUIS VUITTON HISTORY 歷史 Louis Vuitton is today known as a luxury goods house. However the concept of luxury did not exist in 1854 when Louis Vuitton founded its first store in Paris as a trunk maker and packer. This period coincided with the age of the explorers and adventurers. There was a requirement for luggage to meet new standards. Some credit Louis Vuitton as the founder of luxury due to his exacting methods becoming increasingly rare as others focused on cost and volume. In the mid 1800s, noble men and women set off by sea, rail, and beast intent on conquering faraway lands often financed by Governments seeking to establish empires. By early 1900s, automobiles and aircraft completed the cycle of modern adventure. Pre Louis Vuitton, travellers used heavy wooden trunks with round tops allowing rain to drip off. In 1858, Louis Vuitton developed the first lightweight wooden flat topped trunk covered in waterproof grey canvas constructed of lightweight wood. It was so successful with the travelling elite, that a striped canvas was developed in 1872 to distinguish the product from imitators. The checkerboard and monogram canvases followed in 1888 and 1896. Documented Louis Vuitton trunk owners of the time included doll trunks for the current Queen of England and princess Margaret, trunks with safes for house of Cartier, carriage trunks for Countess de Chandon from house of Moet Chandon, picnic trunks for Egyptian princes, polo trunks for Indian Maharajas, and typewriter and book trunks for Ernest Hemingway. This was also the era when Paris had become the centre of the world. Waves of British aristocrats fled Victorian rigidity, followed by the Russians, each more Francophile than the last. Crowned title heads of old Europe, heiress queens of the new world, barons of finance and finally a surge of suave maharajas all were constantly travelling inventing the café society, forerunning the jet set. 11

LOUIS VUITTON TODAY 現今 Antique Louis Vuitton Trunks are no longer in regular use due to lighter weight alternatives and their high value. Instead, they have attained collector status on proud display in homes as coffee or side tables. The revival commenced in the early 1990s with early adopters Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger using them in stores as props. Interior designers started buying for clients as coffee tables. The consensus amongst collectors and dealers is that Antique Louis Vuitton Trunks are investment pieces given the limited supply and high demand of complete trunks with attractive patina, and good condition. Modern pop icons Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Elton John are known collectors. Since the mid 1990s to today, prices have increased at an estimated rate of 20 – 25% annual compound growth 1. Demand is strong in the US and Europe, as well as Hong Kong, Japan and the Middle East. Vintage motorists are especially enthusiastic about custom made Antique trunks that hugged the contours of their cars which were not equipped with boots at the time. Calculated from prices published in Forbes Magazine and “Personal Finance: A Case of Luggage Fetishism” 10 Jan 1998, The Independent against current international prices.

Forbes Magazine,“Personal Finance: A Case of Luggage Fetishism”1998年1月10日刊和 The Independent,与现在的国际价格对比计算得出該數據。

ABOUT US 關於我們 Stewart Tsui 徐凌鋒 and Kai Chen 陳啟川 met whilst in London in early 2000s. They have been interested in alternative iconic collectable assets individually for many years. Given volatility of traditional asset classes, both have found solace in the joy of possessing alternative assets, which have outperformed their individual traditional investment portfolios. Between them, they have an alternative asset collection of Antique Louis Vuitton Trunks, vintage automobiles, Bordeaux first growth wine and Chinese artwork. Stewart has been a longstanding friend of Yang Gallery and is proud to display the Antique Louis Vuitton Trunk collection at Yang Beijing. Stewart and Kai are based in Hong Kong and would be pleased to assist further with questions and orders.
