Y S BUG MALONE

Someone once said if it was raining brains, Roxy Robinson wouldn’t even get wet. In all of New York they didn’t come much dumber than Roxy the Weasel. To be frank, Roxy was a dope. Dumb as Roxy was, he could smell trouble like other people could smell gas. But he should never have taken that blind alley by the side of Perito’s Bakery. Whatever game it was that everyone was playing, sure as eggs is eggs, Roxy Robinson has been well and truly scrambled... 3

Overview Bugsy Malone is a slapstick musical comedy spoof set in 1929 in New York. War is raging between two rival gangs. Dandy Dan and his hoodlums are armed with their dreaded ‘splurge guns’, and Fat Sam and his hopeless gang are providing no match armed only with old-fashioned pies. Blousey Brown, a new girl in town, catches Bugsy Malone’s eye the moment she enters the scene. Despite sheer determination to achieve her dreams in the world of performing, she, like Fizzy, is repeatedly advised to ‘come back tomorrow’. Following another rejection at the Bijoux Theatre, Bugsy lends a willing shoulder to cry on and helps get Blousey a job at Fat Sam’s Speakeasy. Romance is never easy in the world of musicals and in this one it’s Tallulah, a seductive showgirl at Fat Sam’s, who makes sure of it with her attempts to steer Bugsy away from Blousey. After some unfortunate timing and manipulative behaviour by Tallulah, Bugsy is left pleading innocence to a very angry Blousey. Meanwhile, Fat Sam’s gang of half-wits are almost entirely wiped out leaving only

Knuckles, his loyal but brainless follower. Fat Sam tries to fashion his own replica splurge guns but with a disastrous consequence, accidentally taking out his last surviving man, Knuckles. In need of a more sophisticated plan, Fat Sam calls upon the smooth, slick, likeable Bugsy Malone who agrees to help Fat Sam defend his Speakeasy, the liveliest joint in town. After a chance meeting with Leroy Smith, the next champion boxer, the search for back-up begins. Armed with a gang of ‘Down & Outs’ from a local soup kitchen, Fat Sam prepares to face Dandy Dan and his gang in a final showdown. Meanwhile Bugsy has managed to appease Blousey with a pair of tickets to Hollywood. The final showdown is business as usual as the crowd await the entrance of Dandy Dan’s gang, and sure as eggs is eggs, loads more gangsters get scrambled.
