Although his political career then came to a humiliating end, losing his seat in May 1997, Michael has since reinvented and endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for the solid workmanship found in the great railways of the world, the effect of the railways on the history of countries and the daily lives of their people. Listen to his story, told with a “parliamentary stand-up ” wit, and then feel free to question him about it. Followed by a book signing.

FRIARAGE THEATRE From the producers of EXHIBITION ON SCREEN Chopin’s grave in Paris remains a place of pilgrimage and his music continues to sell out concert halls worldwide – but who exactly was this man who was terrified of public performance? Funny, heart-breaking, inspirational – this film has been called the first to really illustrate the true nature of this remarkable and still widely-loved composer. Narrated by Bafta-nominated actress Juliet Stevenson.
STUDIO THEATRE Imogen, the daughter of Cymbeline, the king of Britain, angers her father by marrying against his wishes. This young man is then exiled to Rome, where he makes a foolish bet on the loyalty of his young, abandoned wife, which sets in motion a crisis of trust and deception. One of Shakespeare’s last plays, Cymbeline is a tragicomic romance that combines everything from the menaces of courtly intrigue and the high drama of war to classic Shakespearean cross-dressing, mistaken identity and joyful reunions.

FIDELIO - ROH LIVE TUESDAY 17TH MARCH, 7.15PM ADULTS £15, CHILDREN £10, YARM PUPILS £8 FRIARAGE THEATRE Beethoven’s only opera is a masterpiece, an uplifting story of risk and triumph. In this new production, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann plays the political prisoner Florestan, and Lise Davidsen his wife Leonore (disguised as ‘Fidelio’) who daringly sets out to rescue him. Set in strong counterpoint are the ingredients of domestic intrigue, determined love and the cruelty of an oppressive regime. The music is transcendent throughout and includes the famous Act I Quartet, the Prisoners’ Chorus and Florestan’s impassioned Act II cry in the darkness and vision of hope. Tobias Kratzer’s new staging brings together the dark reality of the French Revolutionary ‘Terror’ and our own time to illuminate Fidelio’s inspiring message of shared humanity. PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM Named by the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has spent his life in pursuit of extreme adventure; inspiring generations and risking life and limb in some of the most ambitious private expeditions ever undertaken. Amongst his many record-breaking achievements, he was the first to reach both Poles, the first to cross the Antarctic and Arctic Ocean, and the first to circumnavigate the world along its polar axis – his current goal is to become the first person in the world to cross both polar ice caps and climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. Both light-hearted and strikingly poignant, Living Dangerously offers a personal journey through Sir Ranulph’s life.

PROFESSOR ROBERT WINSTON – WHAT MAKES US HAPPY? READING THE HUMAN MIND
RSC KING JOHN
WEDNESDAY 29TH APRIL, 7.30PM ADULTS £19, CONCESSIONS £17 PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM Shall we ever really understand what makes us happy? To some extent, the ability to be happy is inherited, but social scientists have emphasized that various environmental influences – health, a stable society, economic advantages - play a major role. Professor Winston examines the role of brain imaging, hormone study, sexuality, child development, pharmacology and psychological research in understanding how science may help us to be happier. Happy people tend to live longer, and recent research suggests we tend to get happier as we get older. Is this simply because we become more forgetful? Can we make ourselves happier and if so, will knowledge of brain function and how we might manipulate it give us more fulfilled lives?
