Angus Jackson directs Shakespeare’s epic political tragedy, as the race to claim the empire spirals out of control.

Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in a new twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity.

Caesar returns from war, all-conquering, but mutiny is rumbling through the corridors of power.

A ship is wrecked on the rocks. Viola is washed ashore but her twin brother Sebastian is lost. Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to explore a new land. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love.

YARM SCHOOL MUSIC DEPT AND YARM CHORAL SOCIETY PRESENTS

The nearby households of Olivia and Orsino are overrun with passion. Even Olivia’s upright housekeeper Malvolia is swept up in the madness. Where music is the food of love, and nobody is quite what they seem, anything proves possible.

FRIDAY 28TH APRIL, 7.30PM

The Rome season in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre opens with the politics of spin and betrayal turning to violence. Following his sell-out productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer (2014) and James Fenton’s adaptation of Don Quixote (2016), Season Director Angus Jackson steers the thrilling action.

ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD (12A) FRIDAY 21ST APRIL, 7PM

ADULTS £15, CHILDREN £10

History shows that humans are obsessed with their genes. IVF treatments now mean we can treat apparently hopeless sterility, help 65 year-olds to conceive, store eggs and embryos in the deep freeze for several hundred years, and screen embryos for serious genetic disorders before a pregnancy has even really begun.

Half a century after its premiere on The Old Vic stage, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, the play that made a young Tom Stoppard’s name overnight, returns to The Old Vic in its 50th anniversary celebratory production.

Advances in gene technology mean that we can not only select embryos for ‘desirable’ characteristics but we can now modify genes of animals with remarkable ease; so possibly very soon we may be able to enhance humans by genetic modification. Will ethical considerations prevent us from the next step - manufacturing stronger, more gifted and very intelligent children? Or will our imperfect knowledge of how our abilities are inherited mean that they there are some major surprises in store?

Against the backdrop of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this mind-bending situation comedy sees two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz (Daniel Radcliffe) and Guildenstern (Joshua McGuire), take centre stage with David Haig as The Player. Increasingly out of their depth, the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of this iconic drama. In a literary hall of mirrors, Stoppard’s brilliantly funny, existential labyrinth sees us witness the ultimate identity crisis.

ADULTS £15, CHILDREN £10

Royal Northern Sinfonia returns to The Princess Alexandra Auditorium with a delightful summer chamber programme. Our journey begins in Vienna, with music from two of that city’s greatest sons, Mozart and Schubert.

Iqbal Khan directs Shakespeare’s tragedy of love and duty, picking up the story where Julius Caesar ends. Following Caesar’s assassination, Mark Antony has reached the heights of power. Now he has neglected his empire for a life of decadent seduction with his mistress, Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Torn between love and duty, Antonyas military brilliance deserts him, and his passion leads the lovers to their tragic end.

Mozart was a talented viola player as well as a violinist, and his Duo was a real labour of love, whilst Schubert’s Quartettsatz is the first movement of a string quartet that was never completed. Next stop Hungary, and the whirling dances and folk melodies of Kodály. Though born in Germany, Brahms spent much of his musical life in Vienna, and his quasi-symphonic String Quintet No.2 was first performed there. The Hungarian influence heard in the folk songs and dances of the final movement bring the programme to a perfect conclusion.

Iqbal Khan returns to the RSC to direct, following his critically acclaimed productions of Othello (2015) and Much Ado About Nothing (2012).

ADULTS £15, CHILDREN £10

La bohème is one of the most famous of Giacomo Puccini’s operas. The classical essence of this opera is expressed by its intense melodic lyrics, original and refined harmony, instrumental light feel and nuances which are all unmistakable and unique.

Part 1, Millennium Approaches America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell.

For over 2000 years, the Teatro Antico di Taormina, under the shadow of Mt. Etna, has inspired artists from the ancient Greeks and Romans to Woody Allen and the opera stars of today.

Andrew Garfield (Silence, Hacksaw Ridge) plays Prior Walter along with a cast including Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Nathan Lane (The Producers), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Russell Tovey (The Pass).

Teatro Antico di Taormina is the second largest ancient Greek theatre in Italy, built in Southern Italy in early seventh century BC. Frequently used for operatic and theatrical performances, this picturesque theatre sitting on the coast of Sicily is home to the annual Festival Euro Mediterraneo.

This new staging of Tony Kushner’s multi-award winning two-part play is directed by Olivier and Tony award winning director Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and War Horse). Part Two: Perestroika, will also be broadcast live on 27 July 2017.

KEVIN AND KAREN CLIFTON - UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

THURSDAY 6TH JULY, 7PM

ADULTS £10, CHILDREN £8 A sensational dance event for cinemas from the internationally acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne and his dance company New Adventures, The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera (CARMEN) and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in classical music, brilliantly arranged by Terry Davies. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Lez Brotherston’s epic design, Chris Davey’s evocative lighting and Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling take in a wealth of cinematic references, creating a powerful and uncompromising vision of small-town America.
