RSC LIVE AND THE PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM PRESENTS
THE TEMPEST WEDNESDAY 11TH JANUARY, 7.00PM £10 – SPECIAL LAUNCH OFFER Simon Russell Beale returns to the RSC after 20 years to play Prospero in this ground-breaking production directed by Artistic Director Gregory Doran. On a distant island a man waits. Robbed of his position, power and wealth, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man, and this no ordinary island. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems. In a unique partnership with Intel, the production will be using today’s most advanced technology in a bold re-imagining of Shakespeare’s magical play, creating an unforgettable theatrical experience.

MARK COOPER-JONES: GEOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING
NO MAN’S LAND – DELAYED LIVE
FRIDAY 20TH JANUARY, 7.30PM ADULTS £10, CHILDREN £8 Hotly tipped as ‘One to Watch’ (Londonisfunny. com), Mark staunchly argues the case for the often discredited subject of Geography. As a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and former teacher of the subject, Mark (Sir) is all too familiar with the Geography stereotypes - elbow patches; colouring in; a fascination with meanders which could become ox-bow lakes ‘any day now’. He does nothing to refute them. But he does offer a laugh packed, educational, geeky Geography field trip of a show which will leave the audience regretting giving up Geography for GCSE. Mark has featured on Russel Howard’s Good News, BBC3’s Live at the Electric, and Radio 4 (with acclaimed sketch group WitTank). An authoritative stand up with a penchant for rules and ‘countries and capitals’ tests.
THURSDAY 26TH JANUARY, 7.00PM
£10 – SPECIAL LAUNCH OFFER Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, broadcast live to cinemas from Wyndham’s Theatre, London. One summer’s evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. Also starring Owen Teale and Damien Molony, don’t miss this glorious revival of Pinter’s comic classic. The broadcast will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with the cast and director Sean Mathias.

Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. MICHAEL PORTILLO LIFE: A GAME OF TWO HALVES SUNDAY 19TH FEBRUARY, 3.00PM
£17.50
It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM. A track record like that suggests to many a privileged friend of the rich and famous with little or no understanding of or care for the ordinary citizen. But since leaving the House a decade ago Michael has endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for solid workmanship and creative energy, as found in our great Victorian railways, and the daily toil of the working man. A historian at heart, he has used a Victorian railway guide to take millions of viewers on a historical voyage of discovery throughout the UK, Ireland, and indeed most of Europe. Listen to his extraordinary story and then feel free to question him about it.

WEST SIDE STORY TUESDAY 4TH TO SATURDAY 8TH APRIL, 7.30PM, SATURDAY MATINEE 2PM
ADULTS £16, CHILDREN £12 (UNDER 14) Inspired by the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story takes Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, and places them in the vibrant battleground of New York City’s West Side in the 1950s. In the midst of the deep-seated rivalry between the Puerto Rican gang, the Sharks, and the white gang, the Jets, Maria and Tony discover that ancient grudges are no match for true love.
With Cleveland Philharmonic Junior Choir and The Mowbray Orchestra.
Their warring factions, however, refuse to back down, and the “rumbles”, romance, and resentment lead the bloody path to the lovers’ ultimate, tragic conclusion With soaring, sophisticated, and diverse melodies, energetic and athletic dance battles, and its remarkably salient social message, West Side Story remains one of musical theatre’s most revolutionary and most loved treasures.
John Forsyth MBE conducts.

THE PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM PRESENTS
PROFESSOR LORD ROBERT WINSTON: MODIFYING HUMANS– WHERE DOES GENETICS STOP? THURS 20TH APRIL, 7.30PM TICKETS £17 History shows that humans are obsessed with their genes. Does the sequencing of the human genome really herald a new opportunity for medicine or is there a darker side that we ignore? IVF treatments now mean we can treat apparently hopeless sterility, help 65 year-olds to conceive, store eggs and embryos in the deep freeze for several hundred years, and screen embryos for serious genetic disorders before a pregnancy has even really begun. Advances in gene technology mean that we can not only select embryos for ‘desirable’ characteristics but we can now modify genes of animals with remarkable ease; so possibly very soon we may be able to enhance humans by genetic modification. Will ethical considerations prevent us from the next step - manufacturing stronger, more gifted and very intelligent children? Or will our imperfect knowledge of how our abilities are inherited mean that they there are some major surprises in store?
